Dr. Hokehe Eko (00:00):
Hello, hello everyone.
Welcome to another episode ofBrain Power with Dr Echo.
I have my wonderful friend andmy amazing colleague and sister
here, Dr Funke Afolabi-Brown,and you're in for a treat today.
So, without further ado, welcome to the show, Dr Funke.

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (00:19):
Thank you so so much, dr Echo, thank
you.
It's always such a pleasurehaving conversations with you
and congrats on the summit.
That was just an amazing, amazing event and I'm just so
thankful for the work you do,thank you, and you, of course,
are part of it.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (00:36):
So thank you for sharing your expertise.
That's about me, so wonderfully.
So for the listeners who don'tknow who you are, please can you
introduce yourself?

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (00:46):
Yes, yes, so I'm Dr Funke
Afolabi-Brown.
I am a board certified sleepphysician with expertise in
sleep in children as well astheir parents, and really my
mission in my practice, theRestful Sleep Place, and also my
platform, which is RestfulSleep MD, is to help individuals

(01:08):
change their relationship withsleep, because when we do that,
we thrive and we reach ourfullest potential.
And so I do this throughmultiple avenues.
I do this through my speaking,I do this through a lot of
workshops I provide, and I alsoprovide that through my clinical
practice, which is the RestfulSleep Place, and then I'm going

(01:30):
to be doing that also through myupcoming book, so I'm really
excited to be here.
We'll talk about that a littlelater.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (01:35):
Yes, you're very wonderful.
As you can see, she's a wealthof knowledge, and that's half of
the resume.
Trust me on this one.
Oh, I'm curious, why did youdecide to?

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (01:46):
become a sleep doctor.
Well, it was a combination ofthings.
It was a combination of seeinghow much sleep impacted myself
as a professional, as aphysician, where I was telling
people they needed to take careof themselves, and I really did
not have.
I knew I needed to do that, butI didn't have the tools.
And so learning the toolslearning how to optimize my

(02:07):
sleep and also address my kids'sleep issues changed my life,
and so it was one of thosethings you see that you can't
unsee and you feel obliged toteach everybody, and so that was
really what I started to do inmy own little way in my practice
, and then I realized that Ineeded to get the education, the
science and the research to beable to further help people, and

(02:29):
so that motivated me to get mysleep medicine fellowship at
Penn, and then the rest ishistory.
I fell in love with sleep.
I just realized a lot of what Iwas telling people was just
scratching the surface.
So really understanding thedepth and the breadth of sleep
medicine now, combining thatwith my own personal story, is
just really been my mission.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (02:48):
Wonderful.
I love that.
Your passion for, or just evenseeing the difference you made
in your family that led you towhere your passion is now and
you're helping so many peoplearound the world with your
knowledge and your wisdom, andso I know that you mentioned
your book and I really want todive into that.
So tell us, why did you decideto write a book and what's this

(03:11):
book about?

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (03:13):
Yeah, so the title of the book is
called Beyond Tired A SleepPhysician's Guide to Solving
your Child Sleep Problems forGood.
For good, Amen.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (03:26):
Listen, you all need the book.
Get the book before it's evenout.

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (03:30):
I'm really excited I mean, I that I
had tried, looked at so manydifferent titles and I'm like
you know what?
What I hear, what is recurringwith the kids that come to see
me, with the parents that theycome with, is we're tired, this
child is tired, is overtired, sohe's like he's going to be
untired, he's going to beuntired, to be untired, and the

(03:51):
parents are like I'm tired, I'llbe untired, and so I wanted to.
I wanted a title that resonateswith people, but also to
provide hope.
So, yes, we're tired, but alsoto provide hope.
So, yes, we're tired, sometimeswe are beyond tired.
But here is a comprehensiveguide for you, as a parent, to

(04:12):
help fix your child's sleepproblems, and not a temporary
fix, not a let's just give somemelatonin and cross our fingers,
let's take some sleepmedication and hope everything
works well, but actually diveinto the what, the how, the why,
so that we can then providelasting solutions.
And I wanted it to be somethingthat was very practical and

(04:33):
relatable for the folk that aregoing to be reading it, which is
tired parents, right, so that,at the end of the day, you're
living with nuggets that you canstart to implement right away.
It's not complicated.
I share a lot of stories becauseI feel stories resonate People
see themselves in stories butalso I bring the science.

(04:55):
So it's not just fluff, it isthe scientific reason why this
is happening in your child'ssleep, and this is why the
following steps will help you tofigure out what to do next.
And then, and the reason why Iwanted to do this, in addition
to just really connecting withmore people, because I always
say, like I can, I need to getout of the four walls of an exam

(05:17):
room, right, the most number ofpeople I can see at a time when
I'm in my clinic is one person, right, one person which is one
family right.
But there are over 8 billionpeople in the world.
I can't see everybody, and weknow that the prevalence of
sleep issues, even in children,is anywhere from like 30 to

(05:38):
sometimes 50%, depending on whatpopulation you're looking at,
right.
So of course, I'm not going tobe able to see everybody, but
with a tool like this, these arethe strategies that I share in
my practice.
These you know the content camefrom things that people ask me
all the time, either on socialmedia, in the grocery store, by
phone, by text, and also justreally my own lived experiences

(06:01):
as well.
So I think that was mymotivation really to provide
knowledge in a way that'sdistilled, it's simple, it's
practical, that even tiredparents can execute.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (06:12):
Oh my goodness.
So okay, just to tease out alittle bit from the book.
So for those mommies who arehad their newborn babies and
they're just like're likewonderful, this amazing bundle
of joy.
So now what?
Because I can barely think, please say to that mom get the

(06:34):
book and the beautiful thing Iwould say.

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (06:37):
First of all, you're not alone.
This too shall pass in a goodway.
But you don't have to strugglethrough it, you don't have to
barely make it through.
You can thrive, believe it ornot, even in that newborn phase.
And I have a whole sectionthat's dedicated to how sleep
changes.
So what are the expectationsfor your child's sleep, from the

(06:58):
moment they are born all theway to when they become older
and they become school-agechildren all the way to when
they're teenagers.
So there's a whole spectrum.
So you can kind of jump aroundand say, listen, we're not at
the teenage years.
I'm going to just focus on thissection, and I also have a
chapter that's solely dedicatedto moms, because we know that we

(07:19):
, as moms, always put our careon the back burner.
We don't prioritize it.
So this chapter really focuseson what are practical things
that I can do in the newbornperiod.
Well, how can I take care ofmyself?
How can I make sure that I'mnot depleted?
How can I make sure I get myown sleep as well?
And we move to sleep during, you know, you know menopause and

(07:41):
perimenopause, and then we talkabout what are the common sleep
disorders that that a woman canexperience that many times
people say it's hormones or it'syour, it's all in your mind,
right Like it is so unfair andso we dive into all of that.
So, even though we're talking, the book is for your kids' sleep
, I could not leave you out.
I had to make sure that momsalso get you know the care they

(08:04):
need and the information theyneed to make the best decisions
for themselves.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (08:08):
I love it, so do you have a chapter for that?

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (08:11):
Well, I don't.
But the entire book is greatfor dads to read because, again,
it's a book that my mission, alot of my passion, really is
towards moms, but of course Iwant dads to get the care and
the support.
So this book will supportanybody teachers, dads, moms,

(08:32):
actually physicians as well, Iwould say within a practice
would read it, because a lot ofthe information is applicable
and then a lot of the contentyou know, even though I talk a
lot about kids sleep, it is 100%applicable to families, because
when I'm talking to the childor I'm talking to you about your
child, I'm talking about yourfamily, because if you're not

(08:54):
well as a unit, as a family unit, then of course your child is
not going to be able to thrivelike they should.
So there's absolute contentthat's applicable for dads too.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (09:05):
Wonderful.
And so, for the special groupcalled teenagers, let's talk
about them, because they needall the support and the help
that they can get.
And they're often, of course,in the transition phase between
childhood and adulthood and allthe hormones and all the changes
happening, and oftentimesthey're sleeping completely off.

(09:26):
So what can you tell parentsabout that?

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (09:31):
Yeah, I mean again, just like that
newborn phase.
Everything occurs in phases andso when you're empowered with
the right information to knowwhat to expect, it really
doesn't pat you off guard.
When your child who maybe theyused to go to bed at 8 pm and
now it's 10.30 pm and they saidthey're not sleeping right, I
actually break down.

(09:52):
Why is that happening?
It's not just their fault, it'snot just social media or their
phones.
Yes, that plays a huge role.
So we talk about the role ofcircadian rhythms, we talk about
the role of you know their.
You know the pressure, academicpressure that they're also
experiencing.
We talk about you know thestart school, you know the fact
that school starts so early andso that's jeopardizing them as

(10:14):
well.
So we really go through all ofthat in a very comprehensive way
, because when you understandwhat is happening, then you
realize oh, my teenager is notjust being cranky or being
difficult or being lazy, no, youunderstand what is going on.
And then we provide thestrategies specifically for you

(10:34):
know their mind racing atbedtime or their difficulties
with putting on their phones, oryou know the social racing at
bedtime or their difficultieswith putting on their phones, or
you know the social pressuresthat you have to help them to
navigate or helping them setboundaries.
So we talk through all of thosethings as well, so that you're
having a well-roundedconversation with your team and
they don't feel like they'rebeing talked at.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (10:53):
They feel like it's a real conversation,
wonderful.
Thank you for sharing that.
As a mom of a teenager who hasbeen so well taken care of by
you, I'm definitely learningmyself, because they don't call
me to manual.
So yeah, and what you just saidis absolutely right.
My daughter will say it's 11.

(11:14):
I can't see You're serious.
But after talking with you andgetting some more like structure
around, it's like okay, Iunderstand, because she really
isn't going into deep sleepuntil early in the morning.
So that makes sense and thewhole thing with school starting
so early and as you weretalking, I was just like you
know, I need to let her sleep inuntil 7.30.

(11:35):
Her school doesn't start until8.20.

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (11:38):
So that should be enough time.

Dr. Hokehe Eko (11:41):
I try to get everything ready the night
before so she can get that extrasleep.
So, yeah, parents, it'simportant for you to be a
student of your child so thatyou can just help them navigate
this time, and not so that thenlessens the fussing right that
we tend to have with ourteenagers, like, oh my God, like
a teacher.
That's right, so we eliminateall of that and have some peace

(12:04):
at home.
So thank you, thank you forsharing that.
So can you please tell ourlisteners where they can find
this amazing book?
And everybody, please get thebook.

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown (12:14):
I think I've already said that like
four times, but yes, yeah, yes, thank you.
I think I've already said thatlike four times.
But yes, yeah, yes, yes.
And I also wanted to also letyou know, with the amazing work

(12:41):
you do with kids with autism andwho have neurodiverse
conditions, are really graspingfor straws or they're trying to
fit this, you know, square peginto a round hole, right?
Sometimes we need to makeadjustments.
So we go through all of thatand I'm really looking forward
to folks to really really beable to get practical tips that
they need from that.
Now the book is coming out inOctober.
We to really really be able toget practical tips that they
need from that.
Now the book is coming out inOctober.
