(00:00):
You're in big trouble though, pal. I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast.
(00:08):
You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?
No.
(00:41):
Welcome to Breakfast of Champions Season 1 Episode 18.
I don't know if the last episode counts as an episode as much as it was just a...
Oh, the livestream. Yeah.
Yeah, that was... yeah.
(01:05):
But I don't know. I have mixed emotions about UFC Noche.
Same. There's a lot of things to talk about there for sure.
Welcome to Breakfast of Champions. We are a podcast about breakfast foods and violence slash combat sports.
We obviously just mentioned UFC. So if you've never heard this podcast before, we kind of delve into a little bit of everything,
(01:34):
but combat sports, meaning sports like UFC or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu slash grappling,
or we even take a look at other sports that have violent incidents in them as well.
Yes.
As always, if you need to holler at us, 682-294-0101 and breakfastofchampspot.gmail.com,
(01:57):
we've been blowing up Instagram and TikTok with the jab and it's going relatively well.
We've gotten some good feedback on that and it's fun. I get to do it with my kids, ripping cards and trying waffles.
And yesterday I was sitting out in the sun just sweating my face off.
Oh yeah, I was at work and one of my coworkers was like, hey, you guys are live right now.
(02:21):
And like, started watching the feed and was like, I'm going to tell them Parker says, what's up?
Yeah, I saw that. I was like, what's up?
So yeah, we last talked about on the live stream. If you caught us, that was kind of an ordeal.
So just a little behind the scenes drama. So we're new to podcasting.
(02:45):
We're not new to social media, but we're kind of new to like trying to attract a certain demographic of people.
Usually with a band, you're just like a wide net, like listen to the music, like it or don't.
But like with a podcast, it's really hard to get people to invest like 90 minutes a week or like a four hour live stream.
(03:08):
Yeah. And the fact that we had like five people on there at one point was honestly impressive to me.
Me too. So what we've been doing is trying to find a good way to go live without having to like pay for followers or like do anything extra out of our pocket.
Because we kind of already do way more than anybody probably knows as far as like production or like buying equipment or buying breakfast or how much time we talk about like what it is that we're doing.
(03:41):
So we finally got enough YouTube subscribers to go live, which is nice.
It was basically I just put a call out there to everybody on social media that was on my personal social media.
And I was like, look, we've got eight subscribers. We need 50. And within two days, we hit that 50 mark, which was amazing.
(04:02):
It just kind of took a relief or like, OK, we can go live on YouTube and have a fight companion.
But the crazy thing is like the mobile app and the desktop iOS are just completely different.
They don't talk to each other and there's no real way to contact anybody at YouTube.
So every time I would hit the live button on my mobile phone, it was like, you don't have 50 subscribers.
(04:25):
And I'm like, but I do all my friends subscribe.
I know Tad was number 51. That's what's up. Thank you, Tad.
So long story short, instead of using my mobile phone that shoots 4K video and is like extremely portable and like light, I brought everything I own computer wise up here.
(04:49):
And so what you guys didn't see is like the hauling of a second TV and a couple of tables and chairs and an entire desktop computer and all of that stuff.
And then trying to make all of our microphones talk to each other and make that live.
And so there is a little bit of stuff that goes into it.
And so just thank you for those people that allowed us to do this.
(05:11):
We're kind of learning on the fly the very next day after Noche USC, the mobile app allowed me to go live.
So it's like, haha, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
So yeah, we've got some cool things planned as far as like, you know, what we're going to do going live going forward and a little bit more focused than just watching straight four hours of TV.
(05:35):
And you guys watching us watch four hours of TV, which I mean, isn't that what YouTube's for?
Yeah, for sure.
To be voyeuristic and watch people do things.
Agreed, agreed.
So thank you for any of you that tuned into Noche USC, I know your lady tuned in, my lady tuned in, Brian tuned in.
You know, just thank you.
(05:57):
A tad. Yeah, pretty sure.
So we've got some friends that are diehards that tuned in to us.
And we just want to say a huge shout out.
Huge thank you because, you know, it would feel really shitty to sit there and talk to zero people for four hours.
The Baja Blaster did not tune in.
Oh, what a bitch.
I think he I think he was working the whole time.
Well, he'll catch it on all four hours of it later.
(06:20):
Yeah, I mean, it's it lives in perpetuity on YouTube.
So if you want to see Parker at a Trump meeting, you think, oh, man, that's my new favorite shirt.
I almost wore it up here today.
That's hilarious.
Parker surprised me this morning with a little gift bag of breakfast. We didn't really talk about anything today for today's breakfast segment.
(06:46):
But he walked in with this huge sack of tacos and glass bottled coffee lattes.
So thank you. So this is what you got.
Yeah. So we got cafecito, which is a little spot here in Fort Worth.
Start as a food truck. Now they got a little brick and mortar in the Fort Worth.
What is it? Food Hall, I think is what it's called. Yep. Over here on Eighth Avenue.
(07:10):
And this came highly recommended by our friend Joe from Panther City Palate.
Go follow him on Instagram. We also need to get that dude on the show.
He knows a thing or two about breakfast, food and violence.
I've seen him do his judo throws and jiu-jitsu class. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
So he had been talking this place up and so we're finally trying it.
(07:32):
We got some potato and egg tacos and we've also got egg and chorizo tacos with a breakfast taco.
Are you a corn tortilla guy or a flour tortilla guy? I like a flour tortilla on a breakfast taco only.
I'm the same way. Corn tortillas go on regular tacos.
(07:55):
I went corn tortilla with these because cafecito is known for their pink corn tortillas.
That's right. That's right. So these are corn tortillas instead of flour.
Interesting. OK. And then we also got the cold brew, which is cafecito, but Ostara coffee roasters from here in Fort Worth are the ones who make it.
(08:16):
And they put it in a glass bottle. So reusable. It's cute looking.
It's dairy free and it's got like some brown sugar and cinnamon and vanilla. It's really good.
Yeah, I'm super excited to dive into all of this.
And then we've also got green salsa and looks like an orange salsa, so maybe a habanero. Nuclear. Yeah.
I don't know. I'm excited about it. Fall out for salsa. I went to bed at 330 hungry and I woke up at 8 hungry.
(08:43):
Oh, I caught it. Good catch. We're athletes.
I just opened up and tried the latte while Parker's unpacking that taco.
Normally, I'm not a huge fan of a bottled mixed drink.
I think Starbucks kind of cornered the game slash ruined it for everybody with like frappuccinos in a bottle or whatever.
(09:04):
But this is super tasty. The coffee flavor is pronounced.
It's not super sweet. And like Parker said, it is dairy free. So there's not a whole lot of like feeling dairy lack lactic acid going on in there.
It's just some oat milk and some spices and some vanilla.
It does have sort of that Hispanic coffee flavor to it.
(09:26):
That Latino coffee flavor that has like the cinnamon and brown sugar type of a flavor to it.
But the flavors are really balanced as well.
Like coffee, very good for the morning time.
I would definitely have that in the morning. It's so good.
Yeah, that that is solid as fuck. Everything that Renee said.
(09:49):
Very true. Yeah.
So this this is like Fort Worth local everything.
Yeah, I'm excited to try these tacos.
So you're about to start a coffee journey yourself.
I am. I am going from working late, late nights to early mornings.
(10:12):
And I have I've never worked in coffee like fully like everyone around me has.
Everyone in unspell worked at Avocad.
My wife worked at Avocad.
All of my friends have worked in coffee.
When I was at Spiral, you know, we had a few different espresso machines.
We had a probably my favorite that we had was this like little Lamar's a co espresso machine.
(10:42):
And I love using that.
So it was all manual and all that.
So but now I'm going to the dark side, the dark side of coffee, the dark roast of coffee.
But they made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
Yeah, you got to join the dark side sometimes.
But yes, that's gorilla.
Got to do what you got to do. Take care of your family, man.
(11:05):
Yeah. So everything you're about to go through, I've already done.
So that's why I'm kind of like, I'm just like, I remember that.
I remember that. And so I was just thinking about like some tips to like if you ever go through the dark side of coffee,
it's to like if you ever go through the quote unquote black apron ceremony.
(11:28):
Oh, I've got some tips for you on that.
So basically, you're going to have to learn as much as you can about coffee.
But there is some certain like ways that you can pair coffee.
And one of my favorite ways that this is a little insider baseball.
If anybody wants to, this is really super nerdy.
(11:49):
I like the nerdy shit.
A lot of times what people do whenever they go through their black apron ceremony is they pick things that are at the store
so they don't have to like go out of their way to prepare a fix.
Because one of the tests, quote unquote, that you're doing whenever you're going through the ceremony is you're picking out a certain coffee
and presenting it to others and then you're telling them about the coffee.
(12:12):
And then to show that you understand that coffee, you're going to prepare some sort of pairing.
And so go out of your way to like have fun with those pairings because a lot of the times.
I know I know you. I know. I know. Yeah, that's what I mean.
That's what I know is going to be fun for you.
I love doing that shit.
(12:35):
One time I paired like this one coffee, I actually roasted nuts and some vegetables
and olive oil and different spices that were hitting some of the tasting notes in the coffee.
And that whenever I went through my ceremony, they were like,
this is the first time someone didn't just bring like a lemon pound cake and like pair it with like, you know what I mean?
(12:58):
So like just I just know like my very first job ever, ever in time was at the coffee beanery inside the Hulin mall.
Yeah. And then I worked at Starbucks for six years and then I worked at a Voka for four years.
And then I worked at Gold Tree Coffee for about a year and a half.
(13:19):
So everything that you're about to do, like I just I'm kind of like jealous that you're getting to do it all over again.
Because like, you know, after you've done it for so many years, like you could ask anybody about a Voka, like you get like bitter and kind of like burnt out and kind of, you know, you're like over.
But like that first part of falling in love with coffee and like learning about the different methods and farms and like being able to like dial in coffee and taste it properly.
(13:48):
And I just that's it's fun. It's super exciting for you.
This coffee is really great use Ostara that is over off Broadway here in Fort Worth.
So like you said, we like to champion the small and we also like to champion the local.
And so if you're over off Broadway, that's where Ostara Coffee Roasters is.
And Caffe Cito is over here over off of the corner of like, let's say Magnolia and in between Magnolia and Rosedale and eight.
(14:17):
It's right next to the hot yoga studio and Chiba.
I hit it right as a hot yoga studio was filling up lots of lots of moms, moms and Teslas that don't know how parking lots work.
Shout out, shout out. Let your Tesla drive for you, please. Man, that's good. It's really good.
(14:38):
Also, I'm pretty sure Etter works there or did work there.
I think others worked at every coffee shop. Yeah, I think he like picks up shifts or I don't know.
I haven't talked to him in depth about it. But but yeah, another Etter touched his coffee and said, I mean, I wouldn't be surprised with how good it is.
Yeah. Let's see here. I've got a papas con huevo and I've also got a nondescript.
(15:05):
So that should be the trees. Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and take a dive in. Yeah, go for it.
They also have acai bowls. They've got a bunch of different ones to choose from, some that are just like fruit bowls with protein powder and all kinds of other stuff.
So, yeah, they're a little picture. Yeah, they have a very large menu of their open.
(15:31):
What are their hours? I just looked at it, but I want to say it was like six to three years and then they close kind of early.
But they've got lots of breakfast stuff, lots of lunch stuff.
Honestly, it was kind of hard placing this order because I wanted to order everything.
So I was on the fence about doing Teresa because sometimes trees can be really good and sometimes it's kind of OK.
(15:58):
It's sometimes a little too heavy. The only time I don't like Jody.
So is whenever it's like super greasy and you haven't like had enough eggs to stop the grease and stuff. And it's just like sitting in its own.
And that's sometimes just too much for me in the morning. So like.
But again, this came so highly recommended, like I got to got to go for it.
(16:19):
First bite. You put some salsa verde on that.
Good. Thoughts as with a mouthful.
That is a solid, solid breakfast taco.
The first thing I can taste is that that is a homemade tortilla for sure.
(16:44):
There's nothing quite like the taste of a homemade tortilla, especially fresh in the morning, just that hint of corn that hits you right off the top with that tortilla.
This also has potato and egg in it as well.
So I thought I thought I took a bite of the wrong one. I was like, hey, wait a minute.
I thought this was supposed to have to be so this takes some time to develop flavor wise.
(17:07):
At first, you're just like, hmm, that's plain.
And then you start chewing through it and you're like, oh, there it is. There it is. There it is.
The salsa is not very spicy, but good flavorful.
I'm going with the orange salsa on mine, which I put it straight on there instead of dipping.
So we'll see. Yeah, I did this. If if it comes back to haunt me because normally when I see orange, I think habanero.
(17:35):
But they only have these two salsas to choose from.
So I'm assuming it's probably not a but burner, but we'll see.
Parker's getting into it.
Sorry, we're enjoying.
I think this is probably my favorite breakfast taco.
(17:59):
Yeah. Holy crap. This is so good. Yeah.
Also, it was cool. I ordered online.
And I got there like five minutes after my pickup time, which was nine, ten.
And there was a line like five people plus like three or four people eating there.
Wow. So love to see that especially for a breakfast spot on a Wednesday morning. Tuesday. Oh, no. Wednesday.
(18:24):
Yeah, here's Wednesday. All my days are mixed up. Yeah, same.
But yeah, it was cool that they were bumping their people and their supporting.
Yeah, this is fire. How is the salsa super hot?
No, it's spicy, but it's not like it's not burning.
Yeah, I'm not going to regret it later. That's great.
Yeah, this is a really quality taco.
(18:47):
I probably would rate this up there with just about any other taco I've ever had breakfast taco wise.
I don't think I can recall a better mixture of combination of flavors and the fact that you have that homemade tortilla.
The homemade tortilla. It's just. That's what puts it over.
Like everything else is done perfectly. Like the potatoes are cooked perfect. The eggs are scrambled perfectly.
(19:11):
But the tortilla is what puts it over that. And again, like I said, we both agreed breakfast tacos should be on flour tortillas.
I don't mind it because of the hardiness of the the the homemade of the tortilla.
It's nice. It's fluffy. It's it's a really good tortilla.
Honestly, if I didn't know that it was a corn tortilla, I probably would have assumed of the flour to you.
(19:34):
So, yeah. So like I said, they've got a huge many. They've got burritos.
They've got chili quiles, which is a favorite of mine.
I almost got that, but I was like, nah, that's going to be really hard to eat on the podcast.
So just one with the breakfast tacos because we've done that before.
(19:57):
Yeah, for sure. I think these might be my new favorite in town.
Yeah, I really love these. I I'm having trouble just not eating the second one really quick.
Oh, I'm I'm going to scarf this as soon as there's a second to.
Yeah, I'll talk for a bit if you want to eat. All right. Cool.
So I'm obsessed with something.
And whenever I'm obsessed with something, I just like I can't stop thinking about it.
(20:21):
I feel like I am an evangelical Christian about certain things whenever they come across my plate.
The thing that I'm obsessed with right now is really silly and it doesn't have anything to do with breakfast foods or violence.
And so if you you know me, you know, I love music.
(20:43):
Part of the reason I DJ is because I love pop music so much.
I just that's one of my things. My DJ name is Pop Boy, et cetera.
Billy Eilish's song Birds of a Feather has me in a complete and utter chokehold right now.
It's the only thing that I want to listen to.
It's the only thing that I like think about.
(21:04):
Like the first thing I think about in the morning is like the song.
I've been playing around with like different variations on like almost like an emo open tuning acoustic version of my own.
And I sent Parker just like a little snippet of like the first verse.
It's just been fun to like play with and think about and like kind of dissect.
(21:27):
And I normally don't like delve in so deep into songs like this.
I get obsessed with songs, but like for some reason, just this one song just like really, really has me in a chokehold.
And if you've never heard it, you've never listened to it.
You probably live under a rock because it's on it's on pop radio all the time right now.
It was on an advertisement for a TV show on Netflix.
(21:51):
I mean, it's just been everywhere for the past couple of months.
But if you go out of your way to avoid that sort of thing, just do me a favor.
Just type it in to YouTube. Do not watch the official one.
I would love for you to watch a different version.
I'm going to tell you exactly what the version is because I've watched it so many times.
(22:15):
It is EME Music Vivo.
It is a live performance from Amazon's Amazon Music's song line.
So somebody ripped this off of Amazon Music's program song line.
And it's a live version of her and her band and her background singers doing Birds of a Feather.
(22:41):
And it's just so like etheric.
Like the fact that her and her background singers are so like in sync with each other and they do these like crazy runs that are in harmony.
It just blows me away.
So while Parker was eating, I wanted to take that time to spread the gospel of Billie Eilish's Birds of a Feather.
(23:02):
That her new whole album, the whole new album is fantastic.
Really, like since the day it was released, it has been in pretty regular rotation.
I probably listen to it like five times a day. It came out.
Yeah, I. It's funny.
So I like you. I love all music.
(23:25):
Pop music holds a very special place in my heart as well.
But I anytime people find out that I love Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift and like Olivia Rodrigo, they're like, wait, what?
No, that doesn't make sense.
I don't understand. Like I'm like, yeah, like Carly Rae Jepsen is one of my favorites of all time.
(23:49):
Emotion side B. I last record was crazy.
It's not like a Tame Impala record.
Yeah, like love me some good pop music.
But yeah, I always get like weird reactions when I'm like geeking out about the new Billie Eilish or whatever.
(24:10):
Right now, my daughter turned me on to a singer.
Have you ever heard of Bailey Spin?
I don't think so. No.
Bailey Spin is a YouTuber.
OK.
And she started making music and the music sounds like if Avril Lavigne fronted My Chemical Romance.
(24:33):
But with I don't even know if that's right.
Like it's like Avril Lavigne, My Chemical Romance, Paramore and Olivia Rodrigo.
Oh, wow.
And like this girl has over a million followers on like TikTok and YouTube and all this.
And she's going on her first full US tour in November and she's playing Dallas at Three Links.
(24:57):
So it's going to be my daughter's first like concert.
She's been to hardcore shows and stuff, but.
She she's 10 and I told her, like, yeah, we're going to go and she's like, what?
I was like, yeah, and it's at Three Links.
So this isn't like going to see Olivia Rodrigo at like a giant place where you're sitting in the nosebleeds watching it on TV.
(25:18):
Like for those of you listening who are not from DFW, you do not know what Three Links is.
It's a kind of small bar and deep elm.
I've seen some cool shows there, like cool bands play there.
We play there. Yeah, I'm thinking capacity.
There's probably like 150. Yeah.
So, yeah, that's going to be my daughter's first like concert.
(25:42):
That's so fun. And she's so excited.
She's like, are we going to get to meet her? I was like, probably.
Because there's like there is a green room, but it's such a small, intimate space.
But also, sorry, we're going down pop music. We're good.
I found this artist day before yesterday.
(26:03):
OK, that's the artist's name day before yesterday.
Her name is Sydney Sprague.
All these names I've never heard. Sydney Sprague.
I'm sending you this album right now, so I don't forget because it's so good.
I found it Monday night when I was closing because I had the last like two hours of my shift from like 11 p.m.
(26:26):
to 1 a.m. is all just like admin stuff and then like running trash across downtown.
But it's I just put in an airbud while I do my thing and listen to music or podcasts or books on tape or whatever.
But this Sydney Sprague popped up.
And I started listening to her and oh, my God, it's so good.
(26:53):
I forgot this one was talking about pop music, but Casey Musgrove Musgrave. Sorry.
No, you're good. Casey Musgrave is another favorite.
I've seen her live three or four times. I'm so jealous of that.
And we have tickets to see her November 23. Nice.
Well, Sydney Sprague gives me some spacey Casey vibes.
(27:16):
Nice. Less country, less traditional pop.
And I found out she played at Three Links last night. Dang.
Yeah, I was working so I couldn't go.
But I always love that whenever you find the artist and then all of a sudden they're there.
That's like that happened to like me, Jordan and Elijah whenever hoops came into our lives.
It was like I heard this one song and then I sent it to both of them.
(27:40):
And then like I was just kind of like, oh, they're cool. Where are they from?
And then I'm like, what? They're playing at Three Links tonight.
Yeah, that's exactly what happened.
I mean, we went, oh, I would love to have been there.
But yeah, she had there's one song specifically where her voice sounds almost identical to Casey Musgraves,
but it's not the same style of music. Interesting.
(28:04):
And the tour she did was actually sponsored by Emo Night Brooklyn. Oh, OK.
So just to kind of get probably some ties behind the scenes there, like production wise or label wise.
She's been around for a little while. I've listened to some of her other albums and they're all really good.
They're like very pretty pop music, upbeat pop music.
(28:27):
But the lyrical content can get pretty dark.
Like the name of the album that I just sent you is Somebody in Hell Loves You.
Well, that's not super dark.
And her album before that was Maybe I Will See You at the End of the World.
And it's like a post apocalyptic like or apocalyptic.
(28:49):
She also some features on the album I sent you.
Kisipi. OK. Kevin Devine.
I feel like there's another good one in there to Pool Kids.
Just to kind of give you an idea of her vibe.
Yeah. If if you are into any of the music we've been talking about, go go check that out.
(29:13):
Yeah, check it out.
So we wanted to talk a little bit about our now that we've like had our feelings settle and we've heard some explanations and some things kind of about our reaction to the event that happened on Saturday Noche UFC.
If you watched the jab at all yesterday, you will now know that Sean O'Malley has had a torn labrum in his hip for the past 10 weeks.
(29:45):
And I feel duped.
Yeah.
I just feel like like you should have done the due diligence to like not let it get this far to the point where it's like obviously there's a point of no return whenever it comes to like production and marketing and all of that sort of thing.
But 10 weeks ago seems like a pretty long time ago.
10 weeks ago, like, hey, I'm not gonna put on a good fight.
(30:09):
Instead of making people think that I forgot how to fight.
Maybe I should pull up.
Yeah.
And then there's just the nonchalant like, yeah, I'm just gonna have surgery on October 3rd.
And then I'm not going to be in the UFC for like nine to 10 months, possibly up to a year.
Like I said yesterday on the jab, if I was Dana White, I'd be pissed off.
(30:30):
Absolutely.
Like spent 20 million dollars of your own money to build a card around your quote unquote, you know, biggest draw or biggest name.
I mean, I could I can think of three or four other fights that are happening within the vicinity of this fight that could have replaced that fight as the main event.
(30:52):
You've got Max Holloway, Elia Topori are coming up.
You could have easily slotted that in there instead.
Alex Pereira and Kahlil Roundtree is coming up.
I mean, he's already saved your ass three or four times this year.
Throw him in there and let him save you again.
I mean, he's clearly in his prime.
He's clearly doesn't have a torn labrum in his hip.
It just it really pissed me off when I heard that.
(31:15):
It pissed me off how he handled the situation and how nonchalant he was about it.
Yeah.
At the end of the day, he gets paid no matter what.
So, yeah.
So, you know, oh, I didn't put on a good show for all the people who paid all this money for it.
Yeah. Whatever. I still got paid.
Yeah, I guess it just it sucks because like for me, $80 is a lot of money for Sean O'Malley.
(31:37):
It just seems like it doesn't matter.
Like you said, he got paid.
And then so I watched the post fight press conference because Tuesday nights, if you're not watching Dana White contender series post fight press conference, you're not getting kind of like the real dirt.
And Kevin Ioli asked him about him lying to the commission about not disclosing his injury.
(32:00):
Dana White was just like, yeah, he straight up lied to us.
He he told us he was good to go and he wasn't good to go.
He's like, how does a doctor check specifically for a torn labrum in your hip if you don't tell us that you got something going on?
So, yeah, I don't know.
I and we talked about this during the live.
We talked about it leading up.
I think they did a huge disservice by not putting any sort of heavyweight fight on there.
(32:24):
Yeah, it just the whole of it wasn't necessarily exciting.
Like we got to see a lot of good wrestling and grappling, and that's cool.
But for an event of this size, it would have been cool to have at least a couple fights.
They ended in knockout or didn't go all the way, even a submission like a second or third round submission would have been cool.
(32:50):
Instead of having to sit through every round and it be decision.
Yeah, like it for how built up it was.
It seemed like everyone was playing it very safe and very like, let's just get through this.
And I haven't watched a whole like honestly, this is probably my first UFC pay per view to watch.
Sure. Live. And it was kind of a bummer. Yeah.
(33:14):
I've seen some people who like loved it.
Those are more the guys I know who are like BJJ and wrestling purists.
They loved seeing all that. And I like seeing that stuff, too.
But again, for a pay per view, I want to see the kind of action I'm seeing in contender series every week for free.
I want to see better action on the contender series.
(33:36):
I love the contender series like that.
That is so cool to me because it is just like put it all out there and go for it.
Then you get your son O'Malley.
I've already made it. I'm going to get paid. Whatever. I'll just phone it in.
And that's the thing, too, is like the ego to be like, well, even with torn labor, I could probably still win this fight when it's just like,
(34:00):
I'm going to be going to wrestle you for five rounds and you need your hips to get out of takedowns and get back onto your feet.
It just it sucks. You know, and then just the whole like weirdness around the fact that like Merab clearly is like trying his hardest to be likable and marketable.
(34:23):
But it just comes off as like awkward and like almost autistic in a sense.
I mean, I assume pretty much everyone.
See, if you're at that level of a combat sport, you're probably somewhere on the spectrum for sure.
But I mean, kissing him on the back and like he was putting on a show.
Yeah. But that's the thing is like, we don't want to see that show.
I mean, that was probably the most entertaining part of the entire night was him bouncing around him like being a weirdo.
(34:49):
He to me, it felt like he was doing a coked out Connor impersonation.
What someone who like it's chat GBT's version of Connor. Exactly.
It's like, hey, here's everything that goes into Conor McGregor.
Will you make that for me? And then you get Merab.
And like I honestly, after that fight, I liked him a lot more than I did going into it because it was so weird.
(35:14):
Yeah. And also the gas tank on that dude is insane.
Crazy. Yeah. Party around like for sure.
Fifth round, he is bouncing around fresh as he was in the first round.
So like he he earned it. He went out there.
He like I think that if Sean O'Malley wouldn't have had that hip injury and could have fought at 100 percent, it would have been a very different fight.
(35:37):
Yeah. But I still think that Murad would have given him a run for his money.
I agree. I don't think that Sean had a any answer for the game plan of a non stationary opponent.
You know what I mean? Just like the the constant bouncing around, the shaking of his hands and his head and just changing levels and just constantly being everywhere other than just right in front of you to hit.
(35:58):
So you could tell kind of in the fourth round, he's just like intently trying to figure out where to send his punches.
And it wasn't until the fifth round to you basically go. It's just like basketball or like football.
Like if you're guarding somebody, you want to watch their waist hips and they're you know, so it's all it's all in the hips.
And so whenever he teep kicked him to the middle of the body, because it's like that's the only stationary thing you got.
(36:24):
He heard him. Yeah. And then it was too little too late.
So I think personally, the biggest win out of no J.
UFC was probably Diego Lopez. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
I think that that guy came out. I mean, he was ranked 12th and now he has taken Brian Ortega's third spot.
(36:46):
So he has leapfrogged leapfrogged a bunch of people.
I think that him going in there immediately and cornering Alexa Grasso brought his face and more attention to him after he just had a great performance.
So I think, you know, as I look back on some of the more impressive pieces of the night that were the sphere and were production,
(37:08):
Diego Lopez is kind of to me the star of the night.
The other thing was disappointed in is just I guess the fact, like you said, we didn't have any sort of like great huge knockouts.
But I also felt like there could have been more fights.
(37:30):
There could have been at least two more fights on either end of the card.
It felt like we paid a lot of money for four or five fights. You know, you know, it lasted until one a.m.
Like, oh, no, no, no, no, no doubt. No doubt.
They could have had two more fights if they would have been heavy hitters that didn't go all 15.
(37:52):
And that's kind of what I wanted to want a couple of cans mixed into the prelim and then the main card.
So that way you could be like, oh, they slept that dude.
So that a way it's less like, OK, 25 minutes later, we're still grappling.
Exactly. And yeah, just it needed more excitement besides just what was going on on the sphere screen, which the production on that was cool.
(38:18):
I'm sure it would have been amazing to be there and see it like.
It was cool on TV, but it didn't translate probably the way it did in person, like looking back at it was like, man, I bet that shit was so cool.
Yeah, I did enjoy the storyline, though I've actually gone back and taken a look at some of that stuff.
Monday, I was teaching music and that was actual Mexican Mexican Independence Day. And so I always try to do history along with music.
(38:49):
And so I was talking to the kids. I was like, listen, this Mexican independence happened like 300 years ago.
What do you think music was like back then? And they were like, they didn't have music or you know what I mean?
And so I actually played them like a couple of songs that the revolutionaries were listening to an actual the hit the him of the National Anthem of Mexico that they developed after that revolution.
(39:11):
And so they were just like, what? You know what I mean? And so we their little bums.
What's crazy is like, I think the UFC did a great job as far as like celebrating a Mexican independence.
They did a really good job of like talking about colonialism, showing Hilda Dago ringing the bell, talking about the grito, talking about the ofrenda and all of the Day of the Dead stuff.
I think that was great. I just wish that like, like I said, I think that maybe if they had an intermission and had those parts, maybe all together.
(39:38):
Yes.
As opposed to like fight movie, fight movie, fight movie, if they may have done it in between the prelims and the main event.
And then the way there was more the ability more to show the atmosphere and not necessarily like we've got 60 seconds to show it to you before we get ready to throw this other fight.
(39:59):
Kendrick Lamar was.
I've seen so much stuff about this on the Internet. He was not there. Yeah, that was Terrence.
So, yeah, that's hilarious. Terrence, but Crawford Lamar.
We were watching it live and we were like, no, no, no.
And I actually went back and watched the press conference and Dana was like, he did kind of look like Kendrick Lamar.
(40:24):
Yeah. Honest mistake. Honest mistake.
Which crazy, though, is Kendrick Lamar's performing at halftime this year at the Super Bowl.
Have you seen that? I did.
I did. OK, so have you seen the announcement for that? No, he's kind of like standing in front of an American flag and he's got one of those machines that if you feed a ball into it shoots out and then and he's saying a lot of things that come on.
(40:49):
Let's go.
Well, there's actually a video that breaks down how the announcement for the halftime show is actually just an extended disk to Drake even more.
I figured it probably was, but that's amazing.
So like almost everything he does and says in the announcement for the halftime performance is basically like dissing Drake one more time.
(41:15):
Like, yes, awesome.
Love it. But I'm also curious, like, when is it going to be played out? Yeah. And over and not making anyone care anymore.
Yeah, like when it was probably after halftime. Yeah, we'll see.
We'll be like, OK, not like us for the millionth time. Yeah, like it's all been so good.
(41:38):
But I also had kind of forgotten about it until the Kendrick Lamar flub on UFC.
I was like, oh, yeah. And are they still like going at it?
Has Drake released anything else or is it just Kendrick?
He released like the secret thing called 100 gigs is like a three song EP.
But it had nothing to do with Kendrick. I don't think I've kind of tuned out.
(42:01):
To be honest with you, the big three brunch that I did and all of the preparation that I did for that kind of burned me out.
I get it. And I haven't really been keeping up me and Phil kind of text back and forth whenever, you know, Kendrick drops or whenever something like that happens.
I am very interested in like the subliminal, like the fact that Kendrick Lamar releases like his music strategically on like Father's Day or like Fourth of July or, you know, the fact that he has enough forthright and thought to turn his announcement into something subliminal, even for just like, you know, the people that really care that much.
(42:44):
But yeah, I haven't really been keeping up with I didn't really listen to the Drake EP that he just released.
I've been more into like pop music birds of a feather.
Yeah, no, I like when I was super heated, I was keeping up and then I just kind of fell off.
And that's what's crazy, too, is you find out all the behind the scenes stuff after the fact that like Drake was paying people to like release his music and like, which we kind of knew during the time.
(43:12):
But like after the fact, you're just like, man, that's corny as fuck.
Yeah, I mean, when you're at that level, kind of that's what it is.
I don't know. I working last night. So you didn't see contender series, right? I haven't seen last week's contender or this.
But I'm going to be staying up all night to reset my sleep schedule so I can wake up in the mornings.
And so I'll have a lot of time to get caught up on contender series. I just wanted to mention one thing.
(43:36):
It's not a spoiler or giveaway or whatever. It's just any time I watch contender series, inevitably there will be one fighter that doesn't get a contract.
And it's just always kind of like super sad to see them sitting in that director's chair by themselves whenever everyone around them is getting the contract.
(43:59):
Yeah. And I forget which episode was the short little guy was Torrance Torrey Finney or Torrance Finney.
Yeah. Yeah. Seeing him sitting there, I was like, yeah, you should be sitting there.
Do you like you did not do enough? Yeah. Like I didn't feel bad for him at all.
(44:20):
Like this is your second time you were told to do something and did not do that. You did not like perform well out here.
I don't know. Maybe I'm just not as empathetic. Usually it's like, hey, especially if it's your second time, if it's your first time, like that's a bummer.
But not everybody wins every time. And if it's your second time, it's like, OK, maybe this isn't this isn't it.
(44:44):
Yeah. It just last night it struck me because the guy that wound up not getting a contract came from city kickboxing.
And his whole video package was Israel Adesanya speaking about how he's like so great and then everybody on the show except for him.
Damn. So he's just like sitting there like in the chair watching people pass by him to go sign their contract with Dana White and just like, was he a young dude?
(45:09):
Yeah. Yeah. He's perfectly fine. Yeah. And that's the other thing is like when it's young dudes, it's like, oh, you're in like 20, 21, 22, 23.
You still got years to come back, like to train to get stronger, to get better and come back and do this shit.
So just looking forward this week, like we said, we've got obviously we went four hours with UFC Noche.
(45:34):
That was a long, drawn out performance and podcast.
But we do two things. One, I saw a Walmart at my local Walmart. They have hanger packs now for the Don Russ.
So I don't have to buy the plaster boxes at 20 bucks a pop, six ninety seven for like 20 something cards.
(45:57):
So I'm going to start grabbing some of those. And then so we don't have UFC this weekend.
So we've got a couple of weeks to prepare for this other card. This other card that we've got is a fight night between Hanata Moekano and Saint Denis.
Hanata Moekano is Benoit Saint Denis. Hanata Moekano is actually the one that just started a podcast with Gilbert Burns and the one that I told you called Raul Rosas Jr.
(46:27):
So interested to see this fight and what we have coming up here. It is going to be a free fight, obviously.
But then the very next fight after that is going to be another pay per view. It's going to be UFC 307 Charles Olivera versus Khalil Roundtree Jr.
So in the build up to that fight, what I'd like to do is kind of intentionally on the podcast, say Khalil Roundtree's name a bunch.
(46:54):
So that way we could try to get him, if you know Khalil Roundtree, give him a holler and tell him we'd like to get him on the podcast.
Just a quick five minute zoom to ask what he eats for breakfast.
Talk his love of hardcore music and just kind of champion him on to possibly win the belt.
Take it away from Alex Perretto. Yeah. So we've got a couple of weeks with no or we've got a week with no fights.
(47:22):
So we've got two weeks. So I was thinking within the next time that we meet, maybe we could do that iceberg conspiracy.
We talked about one of the things that we brought up on the live that we talked about just just quickly is just the Michael Buffer, Bruce Buffer connection.
One thing that I thought was kind of cool, I was taking a look at this before we hopped on just quickly.
(47:47):
I'm going to read this paragraph right here and then we'll kind of wrap up and leave up on this. But it says, If this were a true story, a prize fight, Bruce Buffer would get introduced first.
He's the challenger after all, the baby brother by 13 years coming up in the shadow of a legend drove him to find his own voice, conquer his own sport, be his own buffer.
And so should so he should enter the arena to something suitable UFC wise, something like jump around by House of Pain.
(48:13):
Bruce jumps around nods his head, we're on above. Now it's time for the champ. The lights dim. He makes his way.
Diamonds are forever. Michael Buffer.
Basically, it's just this thing. It says two brothers who scale different peaks at the same rage.
Michael in boxing, Bruce in UFC, a pair of mountain goats. The full story, though, is more like a great American saga.
(48:36):
Not quite rags to riches, but close enough filled with money, guns, fights, foster homes, family mysteries, global plagues, cancerous tumors, Dana White, Donald Trump, James Bond, beer, bourbon and celebrity poker.
So if the buffers lines were a movie script, it would come back with a note to tone it down about 25 percent. Yet every word is true. So yeah, that's kind of we talked about last time.
(49:08):
There was kind of some some controversy with Michael Buffer's name and he had joined the military and they sorted his name out.
He got into announcing and then his family basically saw him on TV and his dad was like, Bruce, this is your half brother. That's my boy. Yeah.
And so Bruce actually was Michael's manager before he decided to get into announcing himself.
(49:31):
The two biggest names in like fight announcing Michael Buffer with the Let's Get Ready to Rumble in boxing and then It's Time by Bruce Buffer in the UFC. Just they didn't know that they were brothers until they were both adults.
So that's a very cool story that like, you know, if you're not in the combat sports world, you still might know. Let's get ready to rumble.
(49:52):
And just like so that's part of that whole thing that that we want to talk about. So next week, we're going to kind of prepare, get into that and then we'll come back to you with some fun UFC slash MMA conspiracy iceberg stuff.
Yeah, let's wrap up. You're going to have a good day. Last day, last day.
(50:13):
So proud of 130.
This is it. All right, everybody out there. Hope you have a good week. If you want to give us a call 682-294-0101 or breakfast of champs pod at gmail.com.
Take care, everybody. Have a good week. Bye. Bye.
(50:56):
