Imagine transforming the art world with just a dash of augmented reality and a sprinkle of pop culture flair! Join me as I share my thrilling collaborations with creative powerhouses like Mike Sturdivant, the mastermind behind Rock Island Growth Specialists and the innovative Stark Flavor app—designed to boost local businesses. Mike and I have been working magic together by blending technology and art, bringing new dimensions to our creations.

Also featured in this episode is Dave Sherrill from DaveRuinsArt, who adds a playful twist to thrifted pieces with his love for pop culture. From live painting sessions to crafting unique art with a tiny Japanese pencil set, these projects highlight the beauty of supporting and uplifting our vibrant creative community.

Looking forward, I'm buzzing with excitement about our upcoming studio projects and classes.

Every Thursday night in January, you'll find a welcoming space where creativity knows no bounds. Whether you're picking up crocheting, crafting vision boards, or diving into a DIY no-sew cardigan workshop, these sessions promise to inspire and connect. We're also gearing up to introduce you to a talented January artist whose innovative techniques could change the way you view art—and perhaps even fuel your own artistic journey.

Plus, a heads-up about our holiday hours and a continuation of our online "Grabie art Advent Calendar." Stay tuned for more art, inspiration, and community connection!

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hey everyone, welcome back to a new episode of
Brutally Made.
I'm so excited to be here again.
This has been such a great busyseason and I had a lot going on
with some collaborations lastweek Thank you for having me, so

(00:25):
I did not get a chance torecord and that is the subject
of today's episode iscollaborating, especially when
it comes to some localorganizations and other groups
that really want to work withyou, other groups that really

(00:47):
want to work with you.
So, and also, instead ofdoodling today, I'm going to
link some of the programs thatI'm talking about.
I thought that that would bereally interesting for you to
kind of catch up and watch andintroduce those individuals that
I got to collaborate with.
So let's just kind of dive in.

(01:08):
Today actually is a new episodeof Rock Island Growth
Specialists, and that is MikeSturtevant, and he has this
really cool program just rolledout I think I'll be the third
episode in this series and hevisits local organizations and

(01:29):
businesses and does what they doat those locations.
So he stopped by and got tocreate a piece of art and talked
about the studio and we got todo the augmented reality with
his piece and he just showedeveryone how magical that was to

(01:51):
create a piece of art himselfand watch it come to life, and
that was so much fun to recordwith him.
He has actually a couple, acouple, no, a few three huge
pieces of art in his home thathe either won at auctions or
commissioned from me to createfor him, and that is something

(02:14):
you can see when he is on theradio with the local DJs.
In the background there's oneof the Palace Theater and one of
downtown Canton, the Nest andthe Canton Sign, and they are
all AR.
The Canton Sign is athree-dimensional kind of piece
that you can stand back andeverything is layered and

(02:35):
rotates.
The Canton Palace Theater thenight sky twinkles and goes from
day to night and the lighttwinkles and goes from day to
night and the light, the sign, lights up.
And then he also owns Alice atthe monument.
At the McKinley monument, apiece I did for Star Hunger Task
Force.
He won that in that auction andshe roars, turns her head.

(02:59):
There's a mother goose landwhale balloon that floats up in
the air.
Just a lot of fun referencesand little easter eggs in that
piece.
So mike has this um great senseof community and loves to
promote local organizations andbusinesses.
He operates stark flavor, whichis kind of an app or a reward

(03:27):
system, so they'll have a tourabout ice cream parlors or
coffee shops or certain you knowlocation for restaurants, and
if you go to each one of thoselocations and you check in every
time you're there, you're in adrawing for like a shirt and
things like that.
So, um, just really built hisreputation on like being Mr

(03:50):
Downtown Canton and, um, I lovecollaborating with him.
I've known him for years.
We were actually in the NSMEclass together when we were
recognized for marketing and Ithink that's been oh my gosh,
maybe close to a decade ago.
It's been a long time that wewere in that class together and

(04:12):
I've really got to know himsince then and I just think that
it's so much fun to get to talkto him and see what he's doing
and I can't wait for you to seethat episode today because it's
so cute.
And then another great guy thatI got to collaborate with and he
came to the studio on Fridaythe 13th and that is Dave

(04:38):
Shirell with Dave Ruins Art.
Dave is a phenomenal artist, alocal artist, and he takes art
that you would find at fleamarkets or I'm doing air quotes,
old hotel art and things thathe finds at Goodwill and
Salvation Army and he interjectspop culture references and fun

(05:01):
movie characters and comic bookcharacters and then his own
characters that he makes up intothis art.
And he has been featured inNewsweek and it went viral
because of a Reddit post andhe's just so much fun.
I have supported Dave in hisArrowhead Good Days.

(05:23):
I loved his store when they hadit downtown.
He and Mel, his wife, and sheis a phenomenal crochet artist
and if you've ever seen me talkabout on my instagram, um, the
little chicken nuggets that Ihave that I've like dressed as
pumpkins and stuff she'scrocheted those she has my my

(05:45):
grands have crocheted toys fromher that they love.
Just you know, they're bothvery, very talented.
So so Dave always puts some ofhis top pieces from the year
into a calendar, and so onFriday the 13th he came over to
the studio and did a livepainting.
Someone brought him a reallycool canvas and he started

(06:05):
painting that live and had hiscalendars.
He did calendar signings.
My husband, bri dressed up as aYeti and had pictures taken
with people.
It was just so much fun and soDave did a video, snapped like a
one-second picture, of peoplebuying his calendar and shared
that across all of his platformslike TikTok and Instagram and

(06:27):
Facebook.
And then, while he was there, Ihad to give him a little set of
the little Japanese pencil setsthat I have that are mini, teeny
tiny, but they're workable.
You have a tiny littlesharpener, a tiny little eraser
they're like on a credit card, they're so tiny and a little
sketchbook.
And I said, hey, you know, makesomething really cool with this
.
So he did and then he posted itand it was super, super cool.

(06:52):
Alfred Newman from the MadMagazine, he drew that with his
tiny little pencils and did aphenomenal job.
So I'm going to make sure thatyou see that video, share that
here in the show notes too.
And that collaboration was justa lot of fun and, just you know,
two local guys really workinghard to show what they do, show

(07:13):
what they love, make a livingdoing what they love and
supporting other you know areasin their life and I just think
that that is so cool when youcan collaborate and work
together on stuff like that andhelp boost one another.
It was just, you know, I feelhonored that they asked me to
participate grateful that theyasked me to participate, love

(07:37):
that I can share my work acrosstheir audience and vice versa.
Dave's calendars are now forsale in my shop so I can help
him sell those.
It's just that's what I want.
That's just what I love is thatsupport of community and
cheering one another on andbeing like, yeah, I can let
people know what you're doingbecause I'm really proud of you

(07:59):
for that, and so that is just,oh, that's what I am all about.
I love that aspect of what mystudio can offer and we have had
some phenomenal days at thestudio with classes.
Deb just had her class thisweek and she had never taught
before and she did a great jobteaching her process and showing

(08:22):
the group how to you know usepalette knives completely with
painting her canvases and youknow the paint colors and
coordinating them and differentways to get the textures, and it
was so good, so much fun, and Ijust love having the platform
and the area and the opportunityto get people to interact

(08:46):
creatively in any way, shape orform.
I've put a few new classes andexperiences on the calendar for
2025.
And I say experiences because Ireally have a heart for sharing
other locations in thecommunity and getting them
involved.
So one of the experiences is abus tour and it's a very you

(09:09):
know short tour, but we're goingto do this once a month.
That is my goal is that once amonth I would love to get people
together.
We'll start at Oakwood Square.
We'll have breakfast atSamantha's, because I love
breakfast.
I love having the opportunityto just chat with everyone,
unveil the item that we're goingto make, the inspiration piece.

(09:29):
Then we will take an hour and ahalf at the first stop and
everyone will get to look forsupplies to make their treasure.
And then the second stop, hourand a half get to find more
supplies and you get to visitsome places maybe you've never
visited before or maybe they'rea favorite.
But now you're shopping with agroup of people that are like
looking for stuff and oh, thisis what I want mine to look like

(09:51):
, or this is the colors I wantto use, or this is the materials
I'm looking for, and we'll takethose items back to the shop.
I'll have some lovely grazingtrays available for lunch and
we'll get to craft together andwe're going to make something
for ourselves based on theinspiration piece that you'll
get to see that day and there'llbe all kinds of like little

(10:12):
goodies and surprises for theday and it's just crafting
together and spending the daytogether and it'll be so, so
much fun.
So I love planning that.
So that is cool because we'llbe on the bus together and just
it'll be so much fun.
So, yeah, I'm big community.

(10:33):
You know, geek, I love sharingsome locations, sharing food,
sharing time together, sharingbeing creative.
Another thing that we're doing, trying this out for the month of
January, every Thursday is opentable Thursdays.
So you bring in any projectthat you're working on.
Maybe you got a really coolcraft kit for Christmas or the

(11:00):
holiday, or for Hanukkah or forKwanzaa, or just you picked it
up for yourself because it wason sale and it's a mini kit,
crochet kit.
Maybe it's a paint by numberand maybe it is an embroidery
kit.
Maybe you're working onquilting squares, maybe you're,
you know, wanting to puttogether a model.
Maybe you got a dollhouse, Idon't care what it is.
Bring your kit in and thenthere's a small charge for the

(11:24):
food.
I'm going to order pizzas andhave snacks and we're all going
to work on our projects thatwe're bringing in and then you
can use any of the other extrastuff that I have at the shop to
help complete your project.
Maybe you need special glue, maybe you need a laser, maybe
something needs cut, maybesomething got broken and I can
laser it out for you.

(11:44):
Maybe you need power tools.
I've got little saws and drillsand heat guns and things like
that.
So just working on our projectstogether, guns and things like
that.
So just working on our projectstogether that'll be every
Thursday night in the month ofJanuary and getting to craft
together, have some pizzatogether, just hang out together
and enjoy working on this.

(12:06):
Kits that will probably set on ashelf if you don't have the, I
guess, goal to sit there andhave that every week.
Oh, I'm going to take this kitin and I'm going to get this
done this month.
So I'm going to take this kitin and I'm going to get this
done this month.
So I'm going to see how thatgoes and see if I have more open
tables the remaining months ofthe year.
I just love having the ideathat we're working on.

(12:28):
You know our own hopes anddreams and goals and projects,
so bring them in.
And even if you don't have one,I have kits.
You're welcome to purchase oneand work on it every Thursday at
the shop with us, so that's nota problem too, but I know a lot
of people do get those things.
I have two or three that I needto work on, so it'll be an

(12:50):
opportunity for me to get achance to work on those along
with everyone too.
So we have new classes that arecoming up.
There's a poll this week on mywebsite or, I'm sorry, on my
Facebook page that asked whatwould you like to have available
at the studio to learn?
I had a whole list of thingsand opportunity to add one if it

(13:13):
wasn't on the list and I lovethe feedback that I'm getting
and there were so many thatwanted like, for example, what
was leading yesterday orWednesday or Tuesday?
It was early right like the dayafter I put the poll on.
It was the what do you call it?
Crocheting, traditionalcrocheting and I already have a
teacher lined up and she hadlike four projects she sent to

(13:33):
me that she wanted to do, andI'm have a teacher lined up and
she had like four projects shesent to me that she wanted to do
and I'm like let's do them all, let's get them all on the
calendar.
So that is coming and I lovethat.
That was the number one request.
So I'm thinking along the samelines that you are, and so I
really want to make this a greatspace for everyone to learn

(13:55):
what they want to learn andopportunity to try new things.
So I just, in some of theclasses I've put on there, I'm
super excited about the visionboard class is coming up at the
beginning of the year.
I love doing vision boards.
So you actually get your ownboard.
It's a 12 by 16 memo board thatyou'll hang on the wall and

(14:16):
you're going to get your choiceof all kinds of little push pins
and then we're going todecorate them and we're going to
talk about the quadrants thatyou'll set up and how to
manifest those dreams.
You know what you're wanting tolook for, what you're wanting
to add to the board thoseempowering words and create
those visions for yourself.

(14:37):
So much fun and that class hasbeen so well received.
I mean, every day I sell a newticket for that and I'm just
blown away how many people wantto do that with me.
So you have your choice betweena black frame or a white framed
board.
And, yeah, sign up, because I'mjust super excited about doing

(14:57):
that together.
So that's a class coming up thebeginning of the year.
Another class we're going to doa DIY no sew cardigan with
beautiful velvet bows.
So bows are huge trend and Ilove jersey cardigans.
I make them all the time formyself, so I thought maybe
people would want to do that.
You get your choice of a gray,a red, a white or a black and

(15:23):
your choice of color of bows andI'll show you how you can
really make it your own.
You can lace up the sleeves.
You can just do bows on thesleeve.
You can do a single tie closed.
You can do triple however many.
It will be so fun, it'll beunique, it'll be you and I'm
really excited about that.
So that's another class that'son there.

(15:44):
We have hand knitting blanketclasses.
There's more hand knitting, kind of like little accessories
coming up.
So many more things.
Oh, my goodness, Just my.
I'm just so excited for 2025.
So I just wanted to share alittle bit about what's been
going on, encourage you tocollaborate with others and

(16:08):
utilize your community.
Use all the resources that areavailable to you to organize
something fun for you knowpeople that you interact with
and share what others are doingthere is plenty of room for all
of us and make it fun foreveryone.
So I do hope you're having funwhen you come over.

(16:31):
That's the goal.
I want everyone to enjoy theirtime when you're at my studio
and enjoy our community andlearn what we have to offer, and
I hope that I'm doing that.
That is my passion and my dreamand I'm not going to be able to
make it without your help.
And you're all showing up, andI can't tell you how much I

(16:52):
appreciate you for doing that.
So I just wanted to put thoselinks in.
Let you know what's going on.
Excited for our Januaryexhibiting artist, so she's got
some really cool techniques andtalking her into a class.
Fingers are crossed, so, yep, Ican't wait to share everything

(17:14):
else that's happening.
So take care, thanks forlistening.
I'm hoping to do an episode atthe end of the year.
So I am not open Christmas Eveor Christmas Day and I am not
open New Year's Eve or NewYear's Day at the shop, but
maybe I'll pop on and you know Icontinue to share my my gravy

(17:37):
art calendar that's been a lotof fun my advent calendar, but
uh.
But yeah, you'll find me online.
Take care, take care everyone.
Uh, thanks again for tuning inand I will talk to you all next
time.
