Colton Cockerell (00:04):
Hello and welcome to a another exciting
episode of Bridge the Gap wherewe're balancing life through
health, wealth, business andrelationships.
All right, welcome to the showeveryone. My name is Colton
Cockerell. And with me, I havemy lovely co host as always miss
Trisha Stetzel Trisha. Good day.
What's up? I'm Australian now.

Trisha Stetzel (00:26):
Good day. You're a goofball today. Hey,
everybody, Colton, thank you forthe lovely introduction from
Down Under, I don't know, something like that. Trisha
Stetzel, Results Xtreme BusinessSolutions. Here. We're having a
little bit of fun today, I'mreally excited about our guest.
So this month, as you mayremember, we're focused on

(00:47):
business success for the wholemonth of April. And today we're
going to be talking aboutpersonal and professional
development. And who better totalk about this topic than my
friend coach. Sean, welcome tothe show.

Colton Cockerell (00:59):
Thank you for having me. I appreciate it. And
Coach John, before we jump inand grill you with our
questions, I do have to give ashout out to our sponsor, and
that is Results Xtreme BusinessSolutions with all your business
coaching needs. Alright, Coach,Sean, personal development, I
think it is something that somany people are like, Oh, that's
cool. But a lot of people areeither turned off by it because
they think it's just like, likeridiculous, or it's just too

(01:21):
much time. So I want to firstbefore we jump into all those
myths, I want you to just breakthe barrier by telling everybody
what is personal development?
And then the follow up question.
How important is it for justpersonal growth?

Shawn Lacagnina (01:32):
To good question, Colton, I'll tell you,
it amazes me when I hear thethings that you just said,
right? Because for me, personaldevelopment is a way of life.
It's really something that it'sa matter of taking personal
responsibility for where youwant to go. And if you if you
have that ambition, oh, mymentors, Zig Ziglar. So I grew
up on the old Zig Ziglar, BrianTracy, Stephen Covey, guys, Tom

(01:55):
Hopkins, zig used to have asaying that if you're not
willing to learn, nobody canhelp you. But if you're
determined to learn, nobody canstop you. That is personal
development. And it doesn'tmatter. You know, we're not just
talking business in your life aswell. Why do we have hobbies?
Why do we do the things that wedo? It's to expand what we want
to know, to expand our life toexpand our thinking. I was

(02:18):
having a conversation with aclient the other day, who's an
expert by all rights inbranding, I mean, amazing at
what he has done. And he doesn'tread other people's stuff,
because he doesn't want to beinfluenced by it. And to me, my
thinking is just the opposite.
Like, why don't you want toexpand your thinking by checking
that stuff out? You know, and hewas afraid of, but then I might
be copying? Well, that's, youknow, there's nothing new out

(02:39):
there really. It's a matter ofreorganizing it, rethinking it,
re innovating it to fit withwhat we're doing today. So for
me to answer your question, youknow, personal development is
taking personal responsibilityfor what we want to accomplish,
to give clarity to our goals, look out into the future, and to
figure out what we need to getthere. And it just, it brings so
much to you, I don't know whyanyone wouldn't want to do it.

Colton Cockerell (03:04):
And it's so interesting, because, you know,
people have been there, peoplehave found the formulas like
man, I was dragging, I was doingthis, this, this, Hey, this is
how I got out of it. This isactually how it turned my life
around. And for us to want to doit ourselves. Instead of
actually just like, take ashortcut by Hey, let me see what
all these people did, and thendo what they did after they
figured it out. Right. I mean, you save so much time and
energy. And I love what you saidI wrote it down, taking

(03:27):
responsibility for where you'regoing. I love that. So you kind
of answered both my questionswithin that. Trisha, do you? Do
you have anything to add onagain, take responsibility for
where you're going. I love thatjust so good.

Trisha Stetzel (03:39):
See, this is why I asked Shawn to come on the
show Colton.

Shawn Lacagnina (03:43):
We can end this right here, man. I'm done. We're
done.

Trisha Stetzel (03:47):
That's it. Mic drop. All right. So Shawn, we
talked about personaldevelopment and the things that
we take personal responsibilityfor, right expanding our
knowledge, but that feeds intoour business development. So can
you bridge the gap betweenpersonal development and
business development? Sure. I

Shawn Lacagnina (04:05):
mean, really, you know, I mean, think of when
I look back at my 38 Plus YourBusiness career, when I was
starting out to do the thingsthat I can do today took more
than just my time investment. Ittook a financial investment. I
had to go either buy a book, Ihad to buy a videotape, I had to
buy a seminar I had to invest tohave that training. Today we

(04:26):
have YouTube, Tik Tok, LinkedIn.
I mean, you can get anything youwant to know for almost free, if
not free to the internet andamazing tool. And yeah, if you
want clarity, then that's whatpeople like Trisha and myself
and you Colton, you know, you goto the experts, and you get a
little bit more in depth and itreally takes things off. But to
get a base knowledge and toreally kind of figure out the

(04:48):
path you want to go, man, it'sjust right there for you. I
mean, think about it. You canlearn anything you want off of
your smartphone, never in thehistory of the world that we had
so much information at hand somuch to utilize. And yet people
still would rather play AngryBirds than take 15 minutes to
improve themselves. It's justamazing to me.

Colton Cockerell (05:10):
And that that is a that is two points first, I
believe coach Shawn, everythinghe learned about business
coaching came from tick tock. Sohe told me, I'm just kidding.
But no, so that you hit a bigpoint, that's where I was
headed, was what can somebody dosomeone who has never been
introduced to personaldevelopment? What can they do to
start? What's the first stepsomeone can take? You know,

Shawn Lacagnina (05:31):
that's a great question. I don't know that
there's a right answer foreveryone. It really depends on
what you're talking about. Whenyou say personal development,
the area that you want, youknow, there's there's personal
development. So I'm a big salesguy love sales, I think it's a
life skill, it's not a businessskill. So for me, looking at the
people that I talked about ZigZiglar, Brian Tracy, you know,
learning what they said, tryingto understand and gain a little

(05:55):
bit more knowledge, looking forthat gem, there's not a silver
bullet. And I think that's wherepeople get off the track and
personal development, you know, they want to what's the one
thing I can do right now, that'sgonna make me a millionaire, you
know, it's small steps over anyperiod of time is going to have
a compounded effect and makethings better, it's not a silver
bullet, you know, when I talk toa client, for the firm, hey,
there's nothing I'm gonna teachyou, that's a silver bullet. So

(06:17):
if you're looking like in aweek, two weeks or a month,
things are gonna revolutionizeand be different, you're gonna,
it's not going to happen. Justlike if you gained 50 pounds
over the last year, you're notgoing to lose it in a week. It
goes goes both ways, right? Solet's just say in business wise,
if your sales are down, you'retrying to find a way to spur
sales, you can easily look forwhat's the best book and look at

(06:39):
the writings and see what peoplesay about it, and see if that
fits in. And that might spuryour thought, maybe it's a video
on YouTube by a business leaderthat spurs your imagination. And
you can see how some of thoseconcepts might be applied to
your business. If that makessense to you, and you want to do
it faster. My advice would be tofind a coach in that area, let
them know your plans work on ittogether, they're going to hold

(07:01):
you accountable, they're goingto help you think through those,
they're going to be youradvocate, right, you're kind of
your confident advisor therethat doesn't have skin in the
game, per se in your business.
So they're going to be veryhonest, and help you put those
tools into place. There's justso many things you can do. You
know, it's no different thanColton, if you came in, said,
Shawn, I want to now playguitar. Well go get yourself a
very inexpensive guitar, get onthe internet, learn some chords

(07:24):
and see if you really like itbefore you go invest a ton of
money in time and find out youknow what this really did for
me. I don't think businesses anydifferent, unfortunately, so
many people, again, they wantthat silver bullet. I got to do
this today. I got to do this addtoday. And then when it fails, I
get frustrated, irritated, and Iwant to do anything

Colton Cockerell (07:44):
for those that can't see our screen, which does
everybody. Coach Shawn, I thinkhas about five guitars.
mandolin. I see. Yeah, there youhad everything back there. So so
great metaphor.

Trisha Stetzel (07:55):
And there's also a book shelf a full of books
behind coach Shawn. So myquestion for you is how do we
not get overwhelmed with all ofthe information that is out
there? I heard you say picksomething and go with it. But if
I pick something, there's like10,000 ways for me to absorb

(08:18):
that information. So what wouldyou suggest coach Shawn as far
as not getting overwhelmed withthe information that's out
there?

Shawn Lacagnina (08:26):
Again, I would start slow. You know, don't try
and do everything at once. Forme, I'm as you can tell, I'm a
book guy, right? I love books. Ilove the concept of reading. I
love the pauses it gives me tothink through things. I love to
take notes, you know, I'll bereading something go, I can
apply that here. I could, Icould express this to someone
else. And I'll make a note inthat book on a pad that I have

(08:46):
with me. Some people are audiothey don't want to read well,
audio books, man, they've takenover everything right now it's
so easy to download an audiobook, Zig Ziglar used to call
your car, your mobileUniversity, right that you could
get a PhD in your car just goingto and from work, slap something
in your car, put your iPad, youriPod, your iPhone, however you
consume, you know that thatinformation, this podcast, and

(09:10):
you're listening to thatinformation. And it's again,
it's expanding your thinking.
And that's really the goal ofeverything. It's it's fueling
your passion, because you'reprobably looking into something
you're passionate about. So it'sgoing to fuel that passion. It's
going to expand your yourthinking in that area. You know,
yeah, like for me in sales, 38years, there's not a whole lot
of new stuff that I can find.
But I get something that oh,man, I used to do that. Why did

(09:33):
I quit? You know, think aboutgoing to seminars, and we've all
been to seminars, we've writtendown a million notes, we're
gonna apply all this stuff, wego home, and we don't do any of
it. So if we learn somethingagainst like, Yeah, I heard that
10 years ago. Why didn't I doit? So that repetition helps as
well. And I think again, it'llhelp even clarify your goals. So
as you're as you're learningmore about this subject matter

(09:55):
that you're interested in, it'sclarifying what it is that you
wanted to goal to attend anyway.
What is that aspiration? Well,as you're reading about it okay
thought I wanted to go thisdirection, after I'm considering
what these authors are saying,or the videos telling me or the
friends I'm talking to, I thinkmaybe maybe this ways a little
bit better. So it can save you alot of time, effort, money, just

(10:17):
in clarifying those aspirations.
And for me, the most importantthing it does is it focuses you,
and I'm a huge guy, I'm focusedin mindset. And I strongly
believe that wherever you focus, your energy is going to flow and
Trisha, I know you've heard mesay that 1000 times. But that's
so believe it, where you focus, your energy is going to flow. So
if you're focusing on the selfimprovement area that you're

(10:39):
looking at, or the businessdevelopment area that you're
looking at, it can't help but dobetter just because your energy
is there, your energy is goingto flow into that if you do a
concentrated effort and reallyfocus on something. I mean, what
can you accomplish?

Colton Cockerell (10:52):
There's really no excuse, like he said, anyone
can put a tape or listen to aYouTube video in your car. It's
just that easy. Just what you doit.

Shawn Lacagnina (11:00):
I mean, look how podcasts have exploded. I
mean, it wasn't, what 234 yearsago, where there was a handful.
I mean, we're not talking likethis medium has been around for
our lifetimes, this is a fairlybrand new medium, and it is
exploding. There's not a podcastfor free, that you can't find to
learn something about a subjectthat you're interested in

(11:22):
printable resources. Again, Idon't think there's ever been a
time in our lives where theinformation is so readily
accessible. To ignore it. It'sjust it is laziness. I mean,
it's just a lack of want to,again, it goes back to Zig
Ziglar, 40 years ago, 50 yearsago, you know, if you're not
willing to learn, nobody canhelp you. But if you're

(11:44):
determined, and that's a keyword, if you're determined to
learn. There's nobody that canstalk you, especially today.
Yeah,

Colton Cockerell (11:50):
yeah, I just I, Jim Rohn was the big one that
I would listen to. And I wentthrough a lot of his stuff and
getting I just incredible. Imean, he also passed away, but,
you know, incredible guy, greatinformation. I mean, I learned a
lot of stuff from a very youngage, about sales, about business
in the right mindset from justpeople like that. I mean, so I

(12:11):
completely understand whatyou're saying. It really changes
your your viewpoint on thingsand the way that you respond.
And, and Trisha did a great joblast week with her succession
mindset. And again, all thisjust pours into each other and
all comes back around to whatyou're feeding your mind, and
how you're reacting to yourthoughts. I mean, I just, it's
great. I love that we're doingthis for the whole month, and

(12:32):
it's just so much goodinformation.

Shawn Lacagnina (12:33):
And really, personal development starts with
your mindset, right? You have tobe determined to do it. You have
to make a personal decision.
This is important. I'm going todo this. Again. It's that focus.
And if you make that mindsetchange that I'm going to do
this, then then yeah, but ifit's a, okay, I'll get around to
it or then it's probably notgoing to happen. There's always

(12:54):
something else to do, right.

Colton Cockerell (12:57):
That's okay.

Trisha Stetzel (13:00):
Go ahead. Sorry.
And that focus is so important,as we've been talking about. So
Shawn, would you share like yourroutine for your personal
development is that I hear bothof you saying, you get in your
car, don't listen to slop on theradio, right? Put in a podcast
put in something where you'relearning something new. But what
if you're not driving? What ifI'm stuck at home behind the

(13:22):
Zoom screen all day long. And bythe time I get off the computer,
I just don't want to write it.
Again. It's about the mindset.
But what's your routine, Seanand maybe a tip that people
could pick up on some kind ofroutine where they're doing
professional development?

Shawn Lacagnina (13:40):
Absolutely, I believe that, well, I don't
think you'll find any successfulperson and you can pick them,
right? That doesn't have amorning routine, and an evening
routine. The day may be chaos, depending on who you're looking
at. But I promise you, if youreally look at what they're
doing, they've got a morningroutine that kicks their day

(14:01):
off, and they've got an eveningroutine that winds it down. And
they hold to it as as fast as itcan be. For me personally, you
know, I get it fairly early. AndI do some reading. I've just
recently learned aboutmeditation recently been in the
last couple months. I'mattempting that it's only a 10
minute to 15 minute gig for mein the morning. But it does

(14:23):
bring you a resolve and a peaceand a it is a incredible mental
exercise to start your day with.
So I do that and then I'mreading something for probably
about 30 minutes at least. Andthen in the evening that varies
a little bit but before I callit a night, and that that time
can flip depending on what I'mdoing with my family. I'm
reading catching up on somethings before I hit the bed. I

(14:46):
average four to five books amonth. So I'm always reading
something and one of my goalsfor 2022 is to mix it up when I
looked last year. The vastmajority what I did was business
books. This year I'm trying toadd in outside reading outside
of that. So two business books, one something off topic, maybe
even a fiction book. But again,it's just that concept of

(15:10):
exercising your brain that doesit for you. Right? So first
thing in the morning to get youprepped and ready to go for the
day. And then in the evening atwhines you down and prepares you
for hopefully a good night'ssleep. And thinking through the
other things that you want todo. It's a it's a kind of
bookends to your day for mepersonally, has worked really

(15:31):
well. Lunchtime. You know, I'veYeah, I'm probably caught
reading something, you know, during that downtime. If I'm not
interacting with a client or, orsomething to do with business,
then I'll probably be readingyou know, something in that way.
Does that answer your question?

Colton Cockerell (15:50):
No. Yeah, it consult your around again, if
you created those habits, youformed them. But that is right
there at that's right at or atour mark. So Coach, Shawn,
that's perfect. The last thing Iwant to throw out there, and I
really encourage people to seethis. Melbourne, I think it's
Mel Robbins, the five secondrule. And when you're when it
comes to mindset, if you'regoing to make a decision, if you
don't make it within the firstfive seconds, you're going to go

(16:11):
ahead and not do it. And I thinkthat's just so fascinating. So
Coach, thank you so much forbeing on today. So guys, that is
the podcast for today. Make sureyou check out the show notes
