I'm so glad you're here with meagain.
I want to open today's episodewith a quote from Professor
Carol Dweck True self confidenceis the courage to be open to
welcome change and new ideas, regardless of their source.
Real self confidence is notreflected in a title, an
(00:22):
expensive suit, a fancy car or aseries of acquisitions.
It is reflected in your mindset.
Your readiness to grow Isn'tthat great.
I love how she focuses onconfidence and courage being
directly linked to mindset andnot possessions.

Today I'm your host, samanthaBell, and this is the Brilliant
Business, beautiful Life podcast.
(01:11):
Are you ready for the businessand life of your dreams?
Let's get started.
Mindset is a common buzzwordthat we've all heard a lot about
.
Particularly, the term mindsetis popular among business owners
, and it's for good reason, because your mindset affects
(01:32):
everything you think, feel andachieve, not just in your
business, but throughout yourentire life.
Now we're about to dive deepinto the very core of your
entrepreneurial success.
You guessed it your mindset.
As a current or aspiring femaleentrepreneur, your path to
success is paved with incredibleopportunities and challenges.
(01:57):
Whether you succeed or not, itall starts with how you think.
You may think there's only acouple of different mindsets,
but there's actually quite abroad spectrum of mindsets and,
being human, we tend to slidebetween them all, with
particular mindsets dominatingour thoughts during specific
(02:17):
times.
A mindset is simply what youbelieve.
It's how you see yourself, howyou see the world, and how this
viewpoint influences yourbehaviors and actions, your
outlook and your attitudes.
Sometimes we see people'soutlook or personality change,
and this happens because yourdominating mindset can shift
(02:39):
depending on your environment, the challenge you're facing or
even the company you're in Now.
That's an example of theexternally controlled mindset
versus the internally controlledmindset.
Depending on how confident youare in a particular situation
will depend on whether externalor internal controls win during
(03:03):
that moment.
Mindsets generally sit in pairsthat are opposite to each other.
For example, you may have aconsumer mindset versus a
creator mindset.
You may like to work as anindividual rather than a team.
You might be an introvert or anextrovert.
Think rather than feel.
(03:23):
Be negative or positive.
Feel scarcity or abundance.
Be productive or defensive, beoutcome focused or process
driven.
You might be closed or open tonew ideas.
A perfectionist, you mightstrive for excellence.
So you can see from all thosethings, all that big lists
(03:44):
you've probably eitherconsciously or subconsciously
acted in most of these differentmindsets at different times.
Now they're all super powerfuland they all have a direct
impact on your life, your joy, your outcomes and your business.
You may have noticed I didn'tmention all the mindsets, and
(04:04):
that's on purpose, because todayI want to chat about two
mindsets that can potentiallyexplode your business growth or
snuff it out like blowing out acandle, and they are fixed
mindset and growth mindset.
Now stop for a moment and havea think about those words fixed
and growth.
Now, as a business owner, it'sa powerful practice to take a
(04:27):
few moments to work out which ofthese mindsets comes naturally
to you and if that mindset iswhat you need to embrace to
achieve the success that youwant.
So what are fixed and growthmindsets, and do you have a
healthy relationship with them?
Are they working for you oragainst you, and how can you use
(04:50):
them to help you in yourbusiness.
So let's start with what theyare Carol Dweck, who I quoted at
the beginning of the episode.
She's a mindset guru.
If you haven't heard of Carolbefore, she's a very well
respected American psychologistwho focuses on mindset and
motivation.
She has written many excellentbooks.
(05:11):
She's studied at Yale and she'sbeen on the faculty at Stanford
and Harvard universities, amongothers.
So she's one really smart lady, and you may be familiar with
one of her books Mindset the NewPsychology of Success.
In this book, I think Carolsums up the definition of growth
mindset and fixed mindsetsperfectly.
(05:33):
She says in summary in thefixed mindset, everything is
about the outcome.
If you fail or if you're notthe best, it's all been wasted.
The growth mindset allows peopleto value what they're doing,
regardless of the outcome.
They're tackling problems, charting new courses and working
(05:54):
on important issues.
Isn't that interesting?
This means that people with afixed mindset believe their
abilities, their intelligenceand their talent are fixed, that
they're just born with them andthey're limited.
They must work within thoselimits and they can't get any
smarter or any better at things.
(06:15):
They most likely findthemselves constantly seeking
the attention and approval ofothers.
They need justification thatthey're doing well.
They need to know they'rebright or gifted or have a
strong need to always be right.
They need constant validationof who they are and how well
(06:36):
they're doing In business.
People with a fixed mindset.
They're actually less likely topush themselves to try new
things or to embrace creativityor to step out of their comfort
zone.
Why?
Because they have a fear offailure.
What this does is put a ceilingon their potential and it caps
(06:59):
their success.
They'll see others growing, innovating and building really
wealthy brands and they'll bewondering why they can't do the
same thing.
It all comes down to mindset.
Now, the flip side of the fixedmindset is the growth mindset,
which is braces, confidence andindependent thought.
(07:20):
If you have a growth mindset, you understand that your talents
and abilities are not fixed andthey can be developed.
They can be improved, you canlearn and strive to be better
through persisting even whenthings don't go as you planned.
A growth mindset fostersresilience and creativity, plus
(07:41):
the determination to keep goingand use obstacles as vehicles
for growth and opportunity.
If you've listened to mypodcast before, you'll know I'm
always talking about obstaclesbeing opportunities.
In episode 20, I actually gointo detail about reframing
(08:02):
challenges as opportunities andhow doing this can open up a
world of opportunities that youdidn't know even existed.
And this is the essence of agrowth mindset Simply by
reframing your mindset you canconquer your fears.
You can achieve elevated levelsof success in your business.
(08:23):
I mentioned earlier howconfidence in certain
circumstances will determinewhich mindset clips into play at
any given moment.
A lot of female entrepreneursare naturally aligned to a
growth mindset.
It's what makes them take thatleap of faith in themselves.
(08:43):
It takes them out of the safe, secure nine to five corporate
world and allows them to embracetheir dreams and do the hard
things so they can live a lifeof excellence, of joy and
fulfillment on their own terms.
Even if they're not supremelyconfident people, they have a
strong belief in themselves andin their ability to do more and
(09:07):
to be better.
They're not afraid of otherpeople's opinions, they're not
afraid to chase their dreams andthey're not afraid to step
outside their comfort zone.
Can you relate to that?
If you're an entrepreneurbuilding your own business or
thinking about it, you probablycan, and guess what it's
exhilarating.
Now here's what I love aboutlearning and growing in your own
(09:31):
business.
One day you start, most likelywith little to no experience in
navigating the online businessworld, the whole new world, and
there's so much you don't know, and your goals and your dreams
are limited at that time by whatyou currently have in your bank
of expertise and what youcurrently believe.
(09:52):
But a few years later down thetrack in your entrepreneurial
life, as you've progressed inyour business journey, you wake
up one day and you feel such asense of accomplishment and
achievement for all thethousands of things you've
learned and how much you'vegrown as a business owner and as
(10:13):
a person.
And the beauty is you can seeeven more possibilities for your
future.
Your horizon is even broaderthan when you started and your
opportunity for creating evenmore ways of solving problems
for clients becomes limitless.
So does the capacity for theimpact you create in the world,
(10:38):
and so does the capacity foryour profit margin.
It's exciting.
You really feel energized andproud of how much you've grown
and achieved when you stop andlook back.
And one of the other greatthings is you actively think in
terms of expansion, as yourdreams also continue to grow and
(11:00):
expand.
And this all stems from yourmindset, from a growth mindset.
This mindset is all aboutembracing challenges, assisting
in the face of setbacks andseeing effort as the path to
mastery.
So ask yourself do I have ahealthy mindset?
You might think you do, butthink about how you respond to
(11:23):
challenges or failures.
Do you feel devastated, worthless, stupid or embarrassed
?
Or are you curious about whyyou didn't achieve what you set
out to and do you want to knowhow you can do it better next
time?
Do you wish you didn't even try?
Are you going to try it againand do it even better next time?
(11:47):
There's a clear distinctionbetween these negative and
positive responses, isn't thereNow?
I'm no psychologist, but Iguarantee you will feel better,
you will perform better and youwill enjoy your life more if you
think and act positively.
When you don't get the resultsthat you want Now, that's all
(12:09):
fine.
But how do you embrace a growthmindset to help your business
grow?
A growth mindset requires you todo two things to be brave and
to be bold.
Staying in a fixed mindsetmeans you will naturally
gravitate towards providingservices and activities that
(12:30):
demonstrate your strengths andabilities, but do not provide
any opportunity to reveal yourweaknesses.
You might think that's a goodthing, because you want people
to see your strengths andabilities.
We do.
That is a positive, but ifyou're focusing only on showing
strengths and abilities andhiding weaknesses, this is
(12:53):
harmful to your business, because you are operating from a
place of fear and you'restaying stagnant.
And neither of those things areentrepreneurial traits, because
you will miss out onopportunities, particularly if
they take you out of yourcomfort zone, because you won't
do them.
So therefore, the first thingto do is to find ways to be
(13:18):
brave and to be bold.
Acknowledge areas where youadopt a growth mindset and the
results you enjoy from this wayof thinking.
Then work out where you arestuck in a fixed mindset, the
areas where you think toyourself that there's only one
way to do this, where you say toyourself I've already mastered
(13:39):
this concept, so I don't need tofocus on it anymore.
Or people always tell me I'mamazing, so I don't need to
improve.
Any topics where you have thesetypes of thoughts mean you've
limited yourself and put thebreaks on becoming more
successful.
Have a think about what youhave already improved in your
(14:01):
business.
What prompted you to take thataction?
What was your initialperception of the problem?
What steps did you take toanalyze and improve, and how do
you feel now that you'vepurposely made positive changes,
and when you start to think inthis way, it's easier to repeat
(14:21):
those improvements the next timeyou have challenges or things
that don't turn out the way youwant them to Now.
Another way to embrace a growthmindset is to look to others for
inspiration.
It's a great idea to takeinspiration from other great
entrepreneurs.
They can be either people thatyou know in person or mentors,
(14:45):
people that you admire online.
Find someone you respect, someone who has grown a
successful business that's inalignment with their purpose,
and think about how they got towhere they are.
What did they do when theyfailed?
Because, guaranteed, they'vefailed many, many times, but
(15:06):
they got back up.
How did they respond whenpeople said no or said, oh,
that's a terrible idea, youcan't do that.
What challenges have they facedand how did they overcome them?
Read their books, listen totheir podcasts, watch their TED
Talk.
Absorb as much as you can fromthem.
Your mind is a sponge.
It's ready to take on all theirwisdom and experiences to help
(15:31):
you on your own journey.
So take advantage of yourinnate unlimited capacity for
learning and be inspired by thepeople who've already gone
before you.
Another way to embrace a growthmindset is to welcome feedback.
You can't grow, improve orinnovate without feedback.
So a simple way of getting thisfeedback is to survey every
(15:55):
single client you work with, gettheir opinion on every project
they do with you, ask some deepquestions that probe into your
services how you've deliveredyour services, your pricing, the
outcomes they've achieved sinceworking with you.
How was your communication?
Where did you do well?
What can you do better?
(16:16):
Are there new ways you can addproducts to your ecosystem to
increase your revenue, to betterserve your clients?
Can you create processes thatwill speed up your delivery or
reduce confusion incommunicating with your clients?
Where are you wasting your time?
What areas do you need toenhance your skills in?
(16:40):
Look at your skillset, wherecan you make that better?
So all these little thingsquestions that great
entrepreneurs ask themselvesregularly.
Now, take some grit to do this, because you may not like the
answers that you get, but beingbrave and bold in doing this
research can only make youbetter, it can only make you
(17:04):
more profitable and it can onlyhelp you increase your impact in
the world.
Another concept that I love, which is very helpful to embrace
the growth mindset, is theconcept of the power of yet.
Again, this is from Carol Dweckand in one of her TED talks she
(17:25):
talks about the power of yet,and it's the concept that
understands you're not great atsomething yet, but with time,
effort and training you canimprove and it even become
amazing at it.
The difference between thepower of yet and a no or a can't
is enormous and, depending onhow you frame your thoughts, is
(17:48):
either going to help you soar ormake you fail or flop.
I don't like using the wordfail, make you flop.
So this concept of yet means no, maybe I can't do it yet, but
I'm going to work at that andI'm going to be able to do that
one day.
And then working out what it isyou need to do to get better at
(18:10):
it, to learn it, to master it.
You can keep improving,improving, improving.
So develop a state of yet andyou will open the door to even
more possibilities in yourbusiness and in your life.
And it just keeps you fresh andenergised too, because
possibilities are engaging, possibilities make you happy.
(18:34):
Another way is to just keeplearning, and this all ties in
with the power of yet.
It's embracing learning.
When I was at school, I didgreat in the subjects I liked,
not so great in the ones thatdidn't interest me.
I could learn anything I put mymind to, but where I didn't put
(18:54):
any effort into the topics Ididn't care about.
I didn't do as well in thoseareas as I could have, and what
I realise now is that by noteven trying, I let myself down.
I limited my opportunities tothink bigger or more expansively
, and in the process of doingthat, I possibly let myself down
(19:17):
by stopping myself discoveringnew things that I could
potentially have enjoyed, orenjoyed learning.
When running your onlinebusiness.
There are going to be thingsthat come along with business
ownership that don't interestyou, that you find difficult to
learn or you don't want to learnor don't want to know anything
about.
But by shifting how youapproach these things, you open
(19:41):
yourself up to betterexperiences, to having more fun,
and by practicing, getting outof your comfort zone and
tackling these things, you'reexpanding your mind.
You're expanding youropportunities.
But don't just take thatattitude to the things you don't
like.
Spend some time and energylearning more about what you're
(20:05):
already good at.
Cone your skills when you thinkyou've mastered them.
Learn more, challenge yourselfmore.
Eventually, your brain will beso fired up and expansive that
learning will become secondnature and something you
actually look forward to andcrave.
Learning keeps you vibrant.
It keeps your mind young.
(20:25):
Curiosity is such a fun thingto incorporate into your
business and into your dailylife, so embrace it, keep
curious, keep learning and youwill reap the rewards.
One of the most effective thingsyou can do in your business
journey is to silence self-doubtand replace it with self-belief
(20:51):
.
Overcoming self-doubt takes onespecific thing, and that is
practicing self-compassion.
Create yourself with the samekindness and understanding that
you would give to a friend who'sgoing through a challenging
time.
Also, celebrate your small winsand recognize that setbacks are
(21:13):
part of growth.
It's being resilient.
Resilience is yourentrepreneurial armor.
It's your ability to bounceback from adversity even
stronger than before.
It helps you get better.
Focus on your business journey,as I keep saying, are
inevitable, but it's how yourespond to them that determines
(21:36):
your trajectory.
You may not associate thesewith a growth mindset, but
incorporating mindfulness andstress management into your
daily routine are vital in yourentrepreneurial toolkit.
Mindfulness techniques likemeditation and deep breathing
they can help you stay groundedand focused.
(21:58):
So prioritise self-care, beingkind to yourself, maintaining a
really lovely balance betweenyour business life and your home
life and getting help andsupport when you need it.
They're all integral to yoursuccess.
So, now that we've unpacked afixed mindset and a growth
(22:21):
mindset, it's time to thinkabout where you feel you
currently sit.
Which mindset do you feel youcurrently have?
If you've already have a growthmindset, that is amazing, but
don't stop there.
Keep nurturing it and growingthat attitude.
Keep finding ways that you canembrace it even more and deepen
(22:45):
that attitude within your dailylife and within every aspect of
your business.
Keep looking for opportunitiesand keep looking for ways to
improve and grow and getcreative.
If you're more naturallyaligned to a fixed mindset, have
a think about whether that'ssomething you feel you want to
change.
(23:06):
Would embracing a growthmindset improve your life and
your business, or do you want tostay stuck in that fixed
mindset?
Have a think about that.
By embracing a growth mindset, though, you are conquering
self-doubt, you're buildingresilience, you're fostering a
positive attitude and practicingmindset.
(23:28):
By doing these things, you'llnot only navigate the challenges
of entrepreneurship, but youwill thrive in the process.
Now I'm going to leave you withanother quote from Carol Dweck.
You can tell I'm a bit of a fan, and it's for good reason.
This is her quote.
Many growth-minded peopledidn't even plan to go to the
(23:49):
top.
They got there as a result ofdoing what they love.
It's ironic the top is wherethe fixed mindset people hunger
to be, but it's where manygrowth-minded people arrive as a
byproduct of their enthusiasmfor what they do.
Isn't that amazing.
I love that quote.
(24:10):
I want you to say that toyourself.
Embrace it and take that onevery day and, as a byproduct,
your enthusiasm will get you tothe top.
I hope this episode has awakenedyou to the power of your
mindset and helped to make youmore aware of where your current
(24:32):
mindset sits and what you cando to change that mindset if you
need to, and how to elevateyour business using this
powerful tool.
