Samantha Bell (00:00):
The thing I
believe can truly make a
(00:01):
difference in how much we enjoyour businesses and the way we
create impact for our clients ishow well we look after
ourselves.
Yet we're usually so busylooking after everyone and
everything else that we forgetto nurture ourselves, and that's
when the wheels can fall off.
In this week's episode of theBrilliant Business, beautiful
(00:23):

passing fad, but is anon-negotiable for our long term
success in business.

treating yourself?

I'm your host, samantha Bell, and this is the Brilliant
Business, beautiful Life podcast.
(01:09):
Are you ready for the businessand life of your dreams?
Let's get started.
Self care and wellnesspractices aren't just about
treating yourself.
They're about feeding your body, mind and soul what they need
so that you can show up as yourbest self every single day.
(01:31):
It's so easy to be busy, but isbusy good?
Is there such a thing as goodbusy?
And if there is, what is goodbusy, well, I'm going to wax
Lyrical for a moment and share apoem with you that explains it
beautifully.
And it goes.
I lied and said I was busy.
I was busy, but not in a waymost people understand.
(01:53):
I was busy taking deeperbreaths.
I was busy silencing irrationalthoughts.
I was busy calming a racingheart.
I was busy telling myself I amokay and sometimes this is my
busy.
That was written by BritainOakman.
(02:14):
I think that is such abeautiful way of explaining what
good busy is, and I call goodbusy self care.
So let's talk about self care, shall we?
When I say self care, whatcomes to your mind?
For most people it's bubblebaths, it's books, it's going to
(02:38):
a fancy day spa and, yes, thosethings are self care.
But it's much more than that.
True, self care goes far deeper.
It's more than just thosesurface level enjoyable
activities.
It's something that is trulygoing to refresh your mind and
(02:59):
your spirit and reconnect youwith your soul.
That is what self care is allabout.
Now, parker Palmer is the authorof Let your Life Speak, and he
says that self care is never aselfish act.
It is simply good stewardshipof the only gift I have, the
gift I was put on earth to offerothers.
(03:22):
Any time we can listen to ourtrue self and give it the care
it requires, we do it not onlyfor ourselves, but for the many
others whose lives we touch.
That is so beautiful and sopowerful, and for me, parker's
words put the thoughts ofself-care or taking time out for
(03:43):
myself into such a beautifulspace, which is a huge
difference to where it normallysits.
For most people, when theythink about self-care, they
think of it as being selfish oran indulgence, so it has more
negative connotations.
But his words put it into abeautiful, nurturing space, and
(04:05):
that's what we need to cling onto.
I encourage you to think aboutself-care in that way.
So why am I talking aboutself-care and wellness and its
importance for being a femaleentrepreneur?
Well, it's all about findingthe time to do those things that
make us feel amazing, but notjust those surface-level things,
(04:26):
because they're a bit of aband-aid.
It's looking more deeply, as Isaid before, and it really needs
to be given as much importanceand locked into our schedule,
just like we do when we'rescheduling discovery calls,
talking to new leads, doing ourclient work, but that's often
very difficult for most of usfemale founders to do because
(04:50):
our natural instincts are totake care of everything to the
point of exhaustion or burnout, and that is where it's super
critical for wellness practicesto come into our daily lives.
In entrepreneurship, self-careis often tagged as a luxury, but
that is inaccurate.
It needs to be given a higherlevel of importance and
(05:14):
disassociated with being selfishand associated with being
essential.
As I said, self-care andwellness practices aren't about
just treating yourself.
They are all about feeding yourmind, your body and your soul
what they need every single dayso you can show up as your very
(05:35):
best self.
And thinking more deeply aboutnurturing yourself just takes
you on a different path than thebubble baths and candles at the
end of a busy day.
It's about nurturing yourselfthrough every moment of the day,
remembering you are the mostimportant cog in your business
wheel, you're the visionaryleader and you have to protect
(05:57):
and respect your energy so youcan keep honoring yourself and
your business and your clientsat the highest level every day.
And for a lot of us, that meanswe need to unlearn and relearn
how to be.
Most female entrepreneursstarted their business to do
what they love, to make animpact and to live life their
(06:18):
way.
But the reality is that ittakes a whole lot of resilience,
grit, determination and hardwork to get to the stage where
you can enjoy all of thelifestyle benefits that being an
entrepreneur brings you.
And for many women, they quitbefore they get there because
they're exhausted, because theyhaven't practiced self-care or
(06:43):
put it as an important part ofevery day.
Ariana Huffington who, if you'veheard me speak before, you know
that I really respect her shesays entrepreneurs, especially,
have a great deal to gain fromfreeing themselves of our
collective delusion that burningout is necessary for
(07:04):
accomplishment and success.
She says the Western workplaceculture is practically fuelled
by stress, sleep deprivation andburnout.
And even as stress underminesour health, the sleep
deprivation so many of usexperience in striving to get
ahead at work is profoundly andnegatively affecting our
(07:28):
creativity, our productivity andour decision making the very
things that entrepreneurs needin order to succeed.
And she's right.
It's time to change thenarrative on entrepreneurship
and make taking good care ofyour body, mind and soul a
natural, beautiful part of eachday, and to start thinking of
(07:51):
self-care as an investment inyour business in an environment
where work is just a click away.
Because most of usentrepreneurs work from home, we
have a beautiful office or aback room or somewhere in our
home where we work and thatmakes it so simple to keep
switching out of real life andswitching back into business.
(08:14):
Like you could be watching TVor having dinner and say, oh,
I've just got to quickly go anddo this, so you walk away from
whatever relaxation you weredoing and you get back into work
and it's really hard not to dothat.
But doing that means there'ssuch a crossover between your
personal and your professionallife.
It can become quite a challengeto delineate and have a firm
(08:38):
line in the sand and this reallycreates chronic stress, anxiety
and exhaustion.
These are costly to yourselfand your business and all the
stress, the anxiety, theexhaustion it means you're going
to actually become lessproductive, you're going to be
(08:58):
less creative and your cognitivefunctions are going to have
slower response times.
You're going to find it moredifficult to make good decisions
because of your anxious, busy, stressed mind that is not
relaxed and hasn't had any timeto recuperate.
As you also know, stress andanxiety are linked to increased
(09:20):
risks of heart disease, ofdiabetes, alzheimer's,
depression some pretty seriousside effects that it can lead
into.
So it's here that you need tounderstand that self-care is
your lifeline and it is what'sgoing to help you manage your
stress, maintain your focus andavoid burnout and all those
(09:43):
other terrible outcomes, becausewhen you're rested, when you're
stress free, you can accomplishmore things more efficiently.
And regular self-care practicesthings like taking exercise,
healthy eating, getting lots ofbeautiful sleep it really boosts
your energy levels and can helpkeep you productive throughout
(10:04):
your day and activities likemeditation, journaling, doing
hobbies that stimulate the rightside of your brain and the left
side of your brain.
They can create more creativity, innovation, as well as
rational thoughts, and that'sessential for you to thrive in
your business.
Self-care reduces stress, itincreases your mental clarity,
(10:27):
it empowers you to make reallygood business decisions.
But here are some morepractical ways that you can care
for yourself and your businessevery single day.
Start simple, start small, justby taking a small break through
your work day drinking lots ofwater, going for a quick walk,
all those little things that youcan naturally build into your
(10:49):
day.
Make sure you get at leastseven to nine hours of sleep
every night and stay active.
When we work from home, we tendto sit down all the time and
that's where we become lethargic, our thighs start spreading and
we get really unfit and it'sbecause we're so engrossed in
(11:11):
what we're doing and we don'tget away from the desk.
So find something physical thatyou love to do and do it every
day.
Just make it a part of yourroutine.
If it is something you love todo, not something you've been
told to do, you're more likelyto do it every day.
Something else you can do is toschedule one thing every day
(11:33):
that's just for you.
So, for example, if you'refeeling stressed, if you're
feeling really time-pressured,or you've just had a really
heavy meeting with a client, orsomething's just not going right
and it's affecting you, stopAsk yourself what do I want and
need right now?
What's going to make me feelbetter?
(11:54):
What would fill up my cup?
And think about that.
It could be something as simpleas just getting outside and
into the fresh air, turning offyour phone, walking away from
the desk for a moment, going andhaving a coffee, running around
the block, reading a book, justtaking five or ten minutes to
reset and get away from whateverit was that's made you feel
(12:17):
depleted.
So fill up your cup.
Ask yourself that when you'rehaving those moments, and do
schedule in that one specialthing that's just for you and it
makes a huge difference.
Learn to say no.
Create some boundaries, planyour schedule.
Do take those breaks.
I've mentioned Exercise.
(12:37):
Really important when you can,is to outsource and delegate.
I spoke about that in lastweek's episode, so have a listen
to that.
It's episode 33, and once ayear I like to take a CEO break.
They're super powerful.
They are such a great way toreset your body, mind and soul,
(13:00):
and I do it once a year.
I've spoken about this earlier.
Episode 11 of the podcast iscalled CEO Breaks the Secret
Weapon for Entrepreneurs.
So do have a listen to that one.
It's a great episode and itwill tell you what CEO breaks
are, why you need them and howimportant they are and the
(13:21):
impact that doing this at leastonce a year will have on you
personally, you professionallyand on your business.
And for some other tips oncreating a beautiful balance of
self-care and managing your daysas the CEO of your business,
have a listen to episode 32.
It's called Harmony, not HustleMastering your Work-Life
(13:43):
Balance.
As a Female Entrepreneur.
I will give you in that episodelots of great ideas you can do
every day in your business.
So have a little listen to thatone.
And I also want to look now atsome successful, very well known
female entrepreneurs who doprioritize self-care.
Just briefly Sarah Blakely, thefounder of Spanx she swears by
(14:08):
her morning routine to get herthrough every day and that is
doing yoga and meditation.
Not for everyone, but it worksreally well for her.
So if you love yoga andmeditation, maybe try creating a
morning routine where you dothat and set yourself up for the
rest of the day.
Ariana Huffington, who I quotedearlier.
(14:29):
She is a huge advocate for theimportance of sleep.
She talks and writes regularlyabout being self-aware, the
importance of taking breaks, getting lots of sleep, eating
well and doing whatever you needto do to refresh your body and
mind.
Oprah Winfrey, who you're allvery familiar with.
(14:50):
She's always been a wonderfuladvocate for mindfulness,
self-care and what I was talkingabout earlier thinking more
deeply about self-care and howwe move through life.
There's an episode or a littlesnippet on Oprah Daley where she
really encourages us all todeepen our relationship with
(15:13):
self-care.
She says we should askourselves this what do?
I need to feel more whole inthis moment.
She says ask yourself thisoften Self-care should not have
to come out of an imminent needfor relief when everything comes
tumbling down.
Self-care should be deliberate,it should be scheduled and it
(15:36):
should become a habit, becausewhat I know for sure, you don't
have anything to give that youdon't have.
That is a fabulous piece ofadvice.
It's quite simple but it'squite powerful and it's
reinforcing the message I'mtrying to give in this episode
today of prioritizing self-care,where she says it should be
(15:59):
deliberate, should be scheduled,it should become a habit.
So give that a go.
Reflecting on my own journey, awoman's retreat I attended last
year was a game changer for meand it was more than just taking
a break.
It was more than just hangingaround with some like-minded
women or getting away from thefamily and business and normal
(16:22):
life.
It was a profoundtransformation that still
resonates with me today, over ayear on.
Self-care is that powerful.
It's not an indulgence, it isan investment in you and, by
extension, it's an investment inyour business.
And you can read about thatexperience I had at the women's
(16:46):
retreat in my journal and it'scalled the Power of Self-Care
and Positive, self-talkingBusiness, so self-care should
not be an afterthought.
It should be right there inyour business plan.
Prioritizing self-care isn'tjust about feeling good.
It's all about enhancing yourperformance, your creativity,
(17:10):
making better decisions andultimately achieving sustainable
success so that you can go onto build your business to the
level where you are living likethe true entrepreneur, enjoying
the fruits of your labor.
I would love to hear about yourself-care practices.
How do you take care ofyourself while running your
(17:33):
business?
So share your tips and storieson our social media platforms.
Get in touch and let me know.
I really would love to hearabout them, and remember that
you can't pour from an empty cup.
So fill yours up with self-careand watch your business thrive.
So that's a wrap for today'sepisode.
I hope you're feeling inspiredto integrate self-care into your
(17:57):
own entrepreneurial journey, and next week I'm gonna be
talking about building abusiness that aligns with your
values, so be sure to tune inthen.
