Speaker 1 (00:03):
Thanks for tuning in to the Bring Joy podcast.
We're in season five and it'sall about baseball, talking big
leagues to the little leagues, yankees to the Conks and
everything in between.
I'll share my joy for the gamewith you and, whether you're a
fan of baseball or goodstorytelling, you'll be
entertained and each episodewill bring a little joy to your
day.
So sit back and relax.
Let's do this thing.

(00:24):
I have to keep this one shortand sweet.
I've had a cold all week and Icould barely hear myself think,
much less talk, but I had todrop an episode for the biggest
week of college baseball.
We have eight teams in Omahaready to battle it out for a
national championship.
The double eliminationtournament kicks off Friday, the

(00:46):
13th and the finals will be athree-game series that start on
Saturday, the 21st.
Now, in my last episode, whereI highlighted the Super
Regionals, I made a fewpredictions and, omg, I only got
three out of eight right.
And the biggest blunder is Icalled LSU the defending
national champions, which is notcorrect.

(01:08):
I know, bennett, they won it in2023 with Paul Skeens, who,
yeah, I dream about sometimes, him and pinstripes.
Hell, yeah, a girl can dream, right.
But back to the correction forthe Tennessee fans my bad
Skipping over the Vols winningthe title in 2024 was not cool.

(01:28):
How could I forget those homerun celebrations with the first
coat and the world'sintroduction to coach Tony
Vitello, who?
But hey, no pressure to winback-to-back titles because
Arkansas took you out of thesupers and will face off against
LSU in Game 1.
Now folks in the know say thesetwo are the best of the bunch.
Lsu and Arkansas shouldn't befacing off so early or even be

(01:52):
on the same side of the bracket.
I heard former FSU superstarand future college coach, doug
Minkiewicz suggest the committeeshould re-seed the remaining
teams after each regional roundand at a minimum before they
match up in Omaha, making for amore competitive tournament.
And, doug, I trust.
But for now it is what it isand as a baseball fan, I got

(02:16):
some peanuts and cracker jacksready for some good baseball.
So here are the teams in itArizona, coastal Carolina,
louisville and Oregon are on oneside of the bracket.
On the other side you haveMurray State, ucla, lsu and
Arkansas.
Yep, murray State is still init and whether you're a sucker

(02:37):
for a Cinderella story or not,the Racers from Kentucky can
play ball and have been allseason earning their spot.
Kentucky can play ball and havebeen all season earning their
spot.
And you gotta love a coach whoshares the experience with his
nine-year-old son the race'sbiggest fan and sticking with
nods to good dads with the beingfather's day and all.
Coastal Carolina's head coachis looking forward to sharing

(02:58):
the college world seriesexperience with his two
daughters and his young son, whowas unable to attend as he was
recovering from a seriousillness.
In 2016, when they won it all,the whole fam will be in the
stands cheering on dad and theShanty Clans I think I said that
right who have a legit chanceto win their second title.

(03:19):
It'll be the first for Arkansas, murray State and Louisville.
The other teams have won itbefore, as I mentioned earlier.
Lsu most recently won in 2023and UCLA are the furthest out
from their win in 2013.
Now, my daddy told me a longtime ago defense wins
championships.
In baseball, that starts withpitching.

(03:41):
There's big names in Omaha, starting with Cade Anderson of
the Tigers the big lefty candeal and Patrick Forbes from
Louisville he rocks, that radargun hitting 100 miles per hour
plus.
The starters need to handlebusiness and go deep into the
game so their coaches don't haveto go deep into the bullpens.
Now you know I love me somecatchers, and Coastal Carolina

(04:04):
has a switch hitting catchernamed Caden Bodine who handles
the plate like a pro.
There's two premier and shortstops in the tournament that are
fun to watch.
Arkansas has Vihava Aloy andthen Oregon State has SEC player
of the year, aviar Ake.
They play their positions welland have Pop at the plate With

(04:30):
FSU out of it, no Florida orTexas team in it.
I don't have any skin in whowins, but if you twist my arm
and say, pick one, I'll go withCoastal Carolina.
It's going to be a fun week ofbaseball and I'm excited to
catch as many games as I can.
Stay tuned for the next episode, where I welcome Jade and Jules
Castillo, lady Cork softballcoaches, to discuss the growing

(04:53):
popularity of softball and whatit was like to attend the
Women's College World Series.
That's going to be a goodconversation.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
