Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hey, you welcome to Build the Damned Thing, a place
where myself, tiffany Largy andour amazing Do the Damned Thing
coaches show you how to use yourstory to build it all.
Whether it's your first sixfigures, your next layer of
multiple six figures, or maybeyou're on your way to a minute,

(00:22):
and if it's not, that it's thelife of your dreams where you
are free, you are strong and youare whole.
First, we're going to show youhow to use your story to build a
strong foundation, and then, next, we're going to show you
how to use your story in salesand marketing to clean up the
cracks.
And last but not least, we'regoing to show you how to use
your story to gather people, because the truth of the matter

(00:44):
is that there's nothing strongerthan being connected to people
who just understand you as youare where you are, so you can
stop explaining yourself.
I want to remind you that, nowthat you're here, you are home
and I officially welcome you toour family.
All right, let's get started.
Self-awareness as a CEO isprobably one of the biggest

(01:07):
things that you're missing rightnow.
Like I thought I knew aboutmyself until I had to look in a
mirror for a long time and Icouldn't get out of it.
So here are the areas in whicha CEO is forced to look in the
mirror, either for the firsttime or the next time when they
were supposed to get a bigdeposit in their company and the

(01:27):
deposit did not come.
And all of a sudden, payrollsdo and they are S-O-L.
That's one Second when theyhave a really high turnover and
people are just leaving andyou're like why the heck are
people leaving me?
And if you're thinking aboutyour personal life, this is
where you have people coming inand out of your life and you're
like why the hell are people inand out of my life and they're
not here?
I don't get it.
What the hell is going on?
Number three Number three isgoing to be where you have

(01:54):
something that keeps recurring, and it might be a situation like
let's say it's like harassmentis happening.
Let's say it's people who areangry.
Maybe you have fights that breakout all the time, like I don't
know what's happening in yourcompany, but I do know this,
having been a CEO for 20 yearsand some plus or minus way.
But here now, in the last 10years, I've had to scale
businesses based on my storybased on my ideas, based on my

(02:16):
philosophies, without a productto filter me in front of me.
So if you're the CEO of aproduct, it's pretty easy,
because you can push it all onthe product and the product is
not winning and the productdidn't do the thing and the
product is the problem and thepeople surrounding the product
and the product development.
But I really want to say thisEvery single company is either
thriving or dying today based onthe leader.

(02:39):
Every home is either thrivingor failing today because of the
leader.
And if you were in a home justlike if you were in a business,
and there's no clear winner, boom, there's your problem.
Boom, there's your problem.
There is no business.
Like I want to make this clearthere is no business, there is
no home that is going to survivewith two leaders at the top

(03:00):
without one of them taking theedge on being the CEO.
I feel wholeheartedly that everysingle CEO is lacking
self-awareness and theirself-awareness is the thing
that's holding the company back.
I know that for me, my lack ofself-awareness at times has been
why a lot of things have beenheld back.
Because think about it likethis, like stay with me, ceo,

(03:20):
stay with me.
If you're at the top of thegame, if you're at the top of
the conversation, who's going totell you about yourself?
If you are signing your name oneverybody's paycheck, who was
going to tell you about yourself?
Like there was really nobody toactually tell you about
yourself.
Now you might be like well, tiffany, you don't understand.
We have a plumbing company andin this plumbing company I got
Jessica Jessica's my operationsmanager and she always sets me

(03:43):
right.
She does not.
She tells you half of thethings, but she's not going to
tell you that you're full of it.
She is not going to walk up toyour butt and be like you are
full of it and walk out, whichis probably what you're behind
needs to hear.
I know it's what I've needed tohear, because sometimes not only
do we make moves, but sometimesI, like me, I run my businesses
all of them with here, with myheart, and this sounds really

(04:05):
wild, but it has worked for mefor 20 years.
And then the brands that I'mbuilding today and the kind of
companies I'm responsible for.
There is no other way, becauseI need people and there have
been moments where I've lost.
I've gotten not jaded, but I'vehad other people who have come
in and tried to get me to seemore of the bottom line.
Tiffany, that is lessprofitable.

(04:27):
We could do it this way.
We don't have to care aboutpeople.
In that way, we can cut offtheir contracts at 12 months.
I'm like, yeah, yeah, we coulddo that.
We could, but we'd be like thatwas companies and that's not
why I got in business.
I did not get in business to gomirror the foolishness that I
see in the industries that I'min.
That's dumb.
I'm not doing it.
There's gotta be another way.
Staying true to your heart I'mstarting to change through to my

(04:48):
heart has been one of the mosteasiest ways for me to stay in
the lane of self-awareness.
But the truth is that I believeat some point, every single CEO
needs a boss.
I know this sounds stupid, butI'm being really honest.
I feel like every CEO at somepoint needs a boss.
Who's gonna tell them aboutthemselves, whether you are

(05:08):
paying them, actually forever, all of them, you should be
paying them and they're gonnatell you about yourself.
They're gonna tell you aboutthe way your grandchild looked.
They're gonna tell you aboutyour outfit.
They're gonna tell you thethings and I'm talking.
It sounds like a little hood, but I'm telling you that they're
gonna tell you the things thateverybody else is afraid to tell
you, and that's the only waythat you and everything you're
touching is gonna grow.

(05:30):
Self-awareness is like the lackand it's not only the lack but
it's the gap in so manycompanies, because the narrative
that I'm always right and thatI know best is one-sided, it is
half-baked, it is unpracticaland it is an inexperienced

(05:51):
approach to winning.
Everybody on this planet knowsthat the best things that are
created eventually have someform of a team around it.
You either need a team as a CEOright now, you either need a
team at your house, or you needa team at your office, or you
need a team in both.
Now, a team is going to be aset of people who are not only
growing with you, but they'regrowing right next to you and

(06:12):
they're forcing anothernarrative to take place.
But if you don't have a placewhere you get checked on a
regular basis, one year turnsinto two year you are on the
wrong path and then you wake upthree years later.
You don't waste half a milliondollars on an idea don't work.
You don't waste a two milliondollars on employee turnover.
You have wasted and lost yearsof your marriage or years of

(06:34):
your kids being little orteenagers, where you're chasing
things and ideas and you don'tget to the result because no
one's checked you.
It's like you know I don't knowif you'll understand this
because maybe I'm a little tooMiami.
I'm born and raised in Miami, for those of you who don't know,
and I'm the CEO of a couple ofbrands and one of the ones that

(06:56):
I'm most proud of is DTDT.
Right, let's do the damn thing.
And in this truth, it's like wehave this conversation my
friends and I but even myfriends and I not old friends,
but you know my team members, people on my team I won't say no
names, but the truth is, likeyou know, I believe

(07:16):
wholeheartedly that a lot ofpeople will talk a lot of smack
until they get their ass beat.
You know, like there's alwayssomebody in the street like
where you're from, where I'mfrom, they'll run their mouth
till forever talking about allthis, that and the other big and
bad, until they get their assbeat and then they shut up.
Now that sounds kind of wild, like why would I bring that kind
of an analogy?
Because where I'm from.
That makes complete sense to me.

(07:37):
So it's like as a CEO, until Iget checked, I'm going to say
all the things, but the truth isthat I am not perfect and I am
definitely not always right, andneither are you.
The faster we come to thatrealization and the faster we
get inside of getting people whowe trust, who are brilliant in
their craft, who are smart inwhat they do and who we're
willing to let on the inside ofwhatever we're trying to

(08:00):
accomplish, the faster we dothat stuff.
And people who don't look likeyou Let me say that part again
people who don't look like you.
If I had a bunch of black womentelling me all the things that
I needed to do I'm building aglobal brand right now what am I
going to do with myself if I'mbuilding a global brand and I
got a whole sea of black womensitting around a circle telling
me how we're going to conquerthe world?

(08:22):
That don't make no damn sense.
That doesn't make any sensewhatsoever.
I would be so ass backwards inthat approach.
I can't even.
I can't even the amount of CEOsI see right now who are like
let's figure out how to growthis global software, and then
their entire executive team, semi executive team, board
clients that they meet.
They're like we have we have 10white people and then one black

(08:45):
token person, and it's likethat doesn't make any sense
either.
The truth of the matter is thatnot only does that make me sick
, but that lets me know thatthat company's biggest trip is
that they're not understandingthe world at large and they're
not understanding everybody.
And you might say, well, tiffany, my product is not for
everybody Today, in today'smarket.
You're wrong, because now thelines have been so crossed with

(09:09):
wealth, access, knowledge, withinterest and more like really
cool people can pick up tradesin a month.
Really cool people can learnnew skills in a year.
Really cool people can just dodifferent things and become
different things and becomedifferent people as the wind
blows and decide that that'stheir level of expertise or

(09:31):
mastery.
And because of that, it's likeI really don't believe that,
even if you're selling to oneperson or one specific avatar, I
really believe with every fiberof my body you should be
building a global brand, becauseyou can, and you should also be
focused on answering thequestion how do I hear more
voices other than my own, sothat I don't leave everybody out

(09:52):
.
That's it.
Like I can't emphasize thatenough.
Who is checking you?
And if it's your wife, let metell you a couple of things that
won't work.
Okay, you can't only be checkedby your spouse, unless your
spouse is doing what you do as aprofession or they are running
a bigger game than you.
I can't explain that Like andthis is the hardest one because

(10:16):
sometimes we're like oh well, mywife or my husband, they're the
person, but if your wife orhusband, they don't really
understand what you're doing,it's going to be hard for them
to check you because they'regiving you opinions that are
biased.
They're also giving youopinions that are incomplete
because they've never had to runa marathon.
Being a CEO is a flippingmarathon.
I'm on these streets runninglike a treadmill sometimes, like

(10:38):
it's just exhausting, likethere are days where I'm like
you know, I cannot.
There are, there are only somany bad words, you know, and
some days all the things arehitting the fan and all of the
things.
I have to have all the answers, and I got to have answers from
my house and I got to haveanswers for my kids.
I got three kids, two of whichare in college.

(10:59):
Like I can't not have answersand I can't not be willing to
step to the plate.
So I don't know what that isfor you, but I do really want to
emphasize this statement to youthat having people that check
you is vital.
Allowing the space in the roomto be checked, starting today,

(11:19):
is a must.
Allowing the space in the roomby who?
Everybody, because the fasteryou get checked, the faster you
get, you get to chisel yourself, the faster you evolve into the
next level of a CEO.
Either it's for next quarter ornext year, and I promise you

(11:39):
it's probably one of the missingthings.
And if you're like Tiffany, Idon't even know what you're
talking about.
Tiffany, how the hell do I getthere?
I don't care how big of acompany you're running.
It's very possible that theshadow CEO is something that you
need.
I'll tell you this.
Ask yourself this question rightnow Like, when was the last
time you allowed someone to tellyou something and you weren't

(12:00):
able to respond?
You just listened and theyweren't penalized for them.
They weren't penalized forasking you a question.
They weren't penalized forsharing their opinion.
They weren't made little, therewas no anger.
You did not resent them, youdid not talk back about them.
When was the last time you justlistened?
When was the last time you justlistened?

(12:21):
When was the last time you justlistened and you shut up?
My responsibility as a CEO is tolisten and lead, listen and
lead, listen and lead.
Not talk all the time, not runmy mouth 24 hours, not always be
right, but to listen and lead.
I cannot emphasize that enough.

(12:41):
So I don't know where thislands.
I don't really know where thislands for you, but I do know
this the greatest gift that wecould give to ourselves, the
greatest gift you and I couldgive and that you could give to
you, is by making a decision toget your self-awareness game
together, but, more importantly,to check yourself as a CEO.
And when is the best time tostart?
Absolutely now, all right, now.
I literally can't.

(13:04):
I honestly cannot wait to seewhat you're going to do with
this, like I can't wait to seeif you're going to go.
Maybe, oh, maybe, oh, maybe, maybe, oh, maybe, oh, maybe.
All right, well, I got to go, Igot to get out of here.
I will absolutely see you nextweek.
I adore you, I am super excitedabout what you're building out
there and I can't wait to watchyou win in these streets.

(13:24):

building the dancing.
I can't wait to hear what yourthoughts were, what part you
loved and the action that you'regoing to go take, because the
truth of the matter is that theperson who wins is not the
person who gets there first,it's the person who takes action

(13:45):
first.

goodies, starting with the sevenmust-haves that you've got to
