SPEAKER_00 (00:05):
Welcome to another
episode of Business by Belief.
It is Labor Day, and I'm suremost of you are off, partially
off, working from home thismorning and going into work this
afternoon.
So those of you who have to workon Labor Day, we'll be thinking
about you and praying for you,and hopefully you've got some
time with family this weekend.
But as we get into Labor Day andwe're talking about...
(00:31):
You know, that obviously comesfrom the labor force, and I'm
giving everybody a day ofcelebration, a day of rest, but
we get into, we're going to havea conversation today about
tithing, not just personally,but corporately.
How are we using our businessesto tithe to the kingdom, to give
(00:57):
to the church, to give to God'speople, and that tends be a bit
of a rough topic for us on apersonal level sometimes.
You throw the business in thereand a lot of people just don't
think about that.
They think that they givethemselves a paycheck and
whatever comes from thatpaycheck is what they tie back
(01:19):
to the church.
There's nothing wrong with thatthinking, but I think that if
you take Scripture and apply itthe way it's intended, that It
doesn't say be sure to set asidea tenth of all that you give
(01:39):
yourself from what you'veearned.
It says to tithe a tenth of whatyou make.
And it doesn't really specifywhere it comes from.
So if you have the ability togenerate income from multiple
levels, and if you're a businessowner, you do, you generate
(01:59):
income corporately, and then yougenerate income personally when
you pay yourself.
And if you have multiplebusinesses and you have
multiple, of course, multiplestreams of income.
So I thought it'd be kind of agood thing to discuss and talk
about And...
You know, tithing initially, andI'm kind of hitting on
(02:21):
Deuteronomy, you know, it's toteach us to put God first in our
life.
And I learned from a very goodfriend at church and somebody
who I look up to and I've hadmany conversations with, he said
several years ago, he said, Istarted being more blessed when
I started tithing first.
(02:43):
So, you know, we have a habit ofmaking tithing part of our
budget.
And not that there's anythingwrong with that, but it
typically falls at the bottom ofthe list.
And it fell at the bottom of thelist for me because I usually do
things alphabetically.
And so tiling would fall down atthe end.
It would fall past mortgage andcar payment and electricity,
(03:05):
everything just about except forwater.
It would fall at the bottom ofthe list.
And so in your mind, you have atendency to say, you know, I've
spent all this money already andwe get down here to the bottom
and Here's what's left.
That wasn't right, so I had tolearn to move it to the top of
the list.
I don't even include it in ourbudget anymore.
(03:25):
Tithing personally is a numberthat I derive from not only what
I make, but on top of that, whatever I feel comfortable
with.
It doesn't say tithe only 10%.
It says set aside a 10th.
(03:46):
But there's nothing wrong withtithing more.
And I don't necessarily believethat God will bless you more
because you tithe more.
That's being blessed for works.
But he does say in Scripturethat he will bless you for
tithing.
So we're to give God the firstand the best of what we earn.
And if we're spending our moneyeverywhere else and giving last,
(04:11):
he can't use that to bless us.
Now, he doesn't want you totithe to the point that you
can't feed your family.
that you can't take care of yourhome and pay your bills, but you
are to tithe first.
In Deuteronomy, they were toldnot to forget the Levites
because the Levites had noinheritance.
(04:33):
Their position was to maintainthe temple and to do God's work.
So in Deuteronomy 14, be sure toset aside a tenth of all that
your fields produce each year.
You know, if you scroll down inthat scripture a little more, at
the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that
(04:53):
year's produce and stores intoyour town so that the Levites
who have no allotment orinheritance of their own and the
foreigners, the fatherless, andthe widows who live in your
towns may come and eat and besatisfied so that the Lord your
God may bless you and all thework of your hands.
There was no question there orgray area.
(05:15):
You know, bring what you haveleft or bring what you feel like
bringing, it would bring a 10th.
So that was the point oftithing, was to tithe to the
church, to help the church grow,to help the church minister.
And that's what it was for.
And in doing that, God willbless them.
(05:35):
It's not to be used inservitude.
So tithing is not an option toput in place of actually going
to minister to people or goingon mission trips or providing
food in a food bank or closing aclothes closet.
Tithing is your first stop.
(05:55):
Your first stop every week is totithe to the church.
After that, You can add on tothat however you want to,
however you feel that God isleading you to.
But tithing is to come first.
It is not to make the churchrich.
(06:15):
It's not so you can pay thestaff more.
It's not so you can buy a fancysign to put out at the road.
Tithing, at its base, is tosupply the church with its needs
to minister to the people, tobring the Word of God to the
(06:35):
people.
That is its ultimate place.
After that, all the other thingsare great, right?
If it helps the church maintainitself, help the church keep the
lights on, keep the heat and airrunning, you've got to make sure
that the pastors and the staffare paid, but it's not to make
(06:57):
them rich.
It's not to take a church of 800people and create a mega
building out of that that has acafe in it and a gift shop and
some of the other stuff I'veseen online in some of these
churches that's justunbelievable.
But the bills have to be paid.
And then it needs to be used tohelp the congregation, to help
(07:22):
those in need, to disciple.
That's what tithing is for.
Tithing, you know, it blessesothers.
And in turn, it will bless you.
And you may not see itimmediately.
You may never actually see it orrealize that it happened.
But tithing will, you know, Godwill bless you for your tithing.
So that brings the question, canwe expect the same if we tithe
(07:46):
or donate from our business?
You know, what if we don't putthe word donate in there?
We use that separate.
Can we expect the same?
Will God bless us as well?
if we tithe from our business, and we're going to talk about
that.
In Malachi, the book of Malachi,Malachi 3, 8 through 12, he
(08:07):
says, He talks about how God putan entire nation under a curse
because of Israel'sunfaithfulness.
And he basically told them, hedid tell them, you're robbing
God of his tithes and offerings, but gave them a chance, told
them what was happening and toldthem why they were cursed and
said, if you bring food into thestorehouse, he will pour out so
(08:30):
much blessing that there willnot be enough room to store it.
And can you imagine if God couldpour out his blessings on you to
the point that you just couldn'thandle it.
The joy that would be in yourlife would be immeasurable.
But that scripture starts out, will a mere mortal rob God?
Yet you rob me.
(08:51):
But you ask, how are we robbingyou?
In tithes and offerings, you areunder a curse, your whole
nation, because you are robbingme.
Bring the whole tithe into thestorehouse that there may be
food in my house.
Test me in this, says the LordAlmighty, and see if I will not
throw open the flesh It doesn'tget much clearer than that.
(09:29):
If you do not tithe and give toGod as we're instructed to do,
you won't be blessed.
He will not bless you.
In fact, he cursed an entirenation because of it.
His people were not being takencare of.
His church was not being takencare of.
His temples were not being takencare of.
Therefore, he was not beingtaken care of.
(09:52):
Nothing we have is ours.
100% of everything we have isbecause of God.
It doesn't matter whether it'syour home, your car, your
clothes, the pencil on yourdesk, the knife in your drawer,
or the money in your pocket.
None of it belongs to us.
We might have gone out andearned it.
(10:12):
But ultimately, God is incontrol of everything.
And we didn't earn it.
So we need to be open andexcited about giving back to the
kingdom what is His to startwith.
And all he asked for in the OldTestament is 10%.
(10:32):
And 10% can be a lot dependingon your income.
It can be a lot whether you makea lot of money and definitely a
lot if you don't make a lot ofmoney.
If you're already strugglingpaycheck to paycheck trying to
make ends meet, 10% adds up.
But there's a joy that comesfrom it.
There's a joy that comes in yourheart knowing that you have
(10:54):
obeyed the Lord.
There's a joy that comes fromknowing that you have helped the
church be able to continue itsmission.
There's a satisfaction inknowing that what you have done
may have just saved somebody'ssoul, may have just been able to
get your mission team off on amission and where they were able
(11:19):
to witness to somebody who theywere able to help lead to
salvation.
And you may never know aboutthat, but that's what tithing
does.
Tithing keeps the church goingso that they can minister and be
disciples to God's people, whichis what we are called to do.
(11:40):
That's what we, as God'schildren, are called to do.
So we need to be making surethat we're contributing to that,
and tithing will be can.
not just what we want and notalways just the minimum, but if
we can and we're able to do itwithout putting our family's
welfare at risk, then we shouldbe doing it graciously because
(12:01):
there are many people out therewho can't do it.
There are many families outthere who are struggling so bad
they don't have 10%.
They don't have any extraleftover at the end of the week.
And they're on the verge oflosing their house or they're on
the verge of not, you know, every week they might just be
scraping by barely getting foodon the table.
We need to be able to compensatefor that because if we can bless
(12:24):
the church and compensate forwhat other people are not able
to do because we've been blessedand are able to, not only do I
believe wholeheartedly based onscripture that we'll be blessed
for that, but I believe thatthat will eventually get those
people an opportunity to get ontheir feet and continue that
(12:45):
trend down the road.
I really do.
And And I'm not a big fan oftaxpayers funding people who
don't want to work or are toolazy to work.
I'm not speaking of those whophysically actually can't, but
those who take advantage of thesystem.
And I don't want to make itsound like we should be covering
for everybody who just doesn'tfeel like tithing.
I think that God will take careof that themselves, but there
(13:07):
are those out there who can't.
And we need to have a heart forthat and try to make up for that
and know that when we tithe morethan we have to, that we're
probably helping somebody orhelping the kingdom for somebody
who's not able to at thisparticular moment, who might be
going through a rough patch, whomay have been laid off or hours
cut or run into some medicalsituations or medical bills.
(13:29):
You never know.
And it just might be that maybethe church ends up ministering
to that particular person andcan help them get back on their
feet.
So, you know, anything that youdo and give is a blessing to the
church, to the people of thechurch, and God will bless you
as well.
So, you know, can we expect thesame if we tie from our
(13:49):
businesses absolutely I thinkGod will bless you for giving to
the kingdom regardless of whereit comes from and I feel in my
heart that God has put me in aplace where I've got a job and a
business where I can tithe fromthe business and I used the word
(14:09):
donate earlier and so I'm goingto use that word again but I
don't know that it's really theright word because I believe
that if you do anything forGod's people you can that's also
considered a tie.
And there's several ways thatyou can do that.
And of course, the church, donating extra to the church is
one way to do it straight out ofyour company or a company you
(14:30):
work for.
There are tons of charities outthere, faith-based
organizations, you know,children's homes, battered
women's shelters, healthcharities, you know, St.
Jude, you know, any kind ofdiseases or illnesses,
especially chronic ones or thosediseases that are going to be
terminally ill that need to befunded and researched.
(14:52):
Anything like that, VA homes, VAcenters, veteran organizations,
those suffering with PTSD alwayscould use some extra help.
Food banks, clothing drives, donating to nursing homes or
hospice organizations, tithingor giving a donation to
(15:14):
chaplains at those places sothat they can go in and better
minister to those who are intheir latter years or in
hospice, if you know some peoplewithin church who are just
having a bad time, they'restruggling, right?
Financially, they're just goingthrough a drought.
For whatever the reason may be,your business can help support
(15:38):
that, can help contribute tothem a little bit and help them
out some.
Help them just get through aweek.
Go to the grocery store.
Buy some groceries.
Go meet them at the gas station, fill the car up with gas.
I mean, anything helps people.
You can use your business andcompany to fund outreach
ministries, mission trips.
(16:00):
I mean, the possibilities areendless, but why aren't we using
our companies to tie us to thechurch or to God's people or
just to help in general?
Why aren't we doing that?
And listen, I've said it before, whether you want to do it and
then know who did it or not isup to you.
(16:24):
And sometimes you can't donatewithout them realizing who
donated.
But I'm a big believer of givingwithout recognizing, right?
I'm a big believer that if I candonate to write a check to the
Batter Women's Shelter, from theheart, a donation, a gift to
help them, I know my name's onthe check, the business name is
(16:46):
on the check, but I'lltypically...
I'll put a note on there.
I don't want any recognition forthis.
This is anonymous.
donated to the church beforeanonymously uh we do have
sponsorships at the church likewell a golf tournament and they
put your name on a sign and i'vedone stuff like that and i'll
let them do that because that'sthat's what they want to do they
(17:06):
want to recognize those peoplewho who gave but you don't
always have to be recognizedit's it's not giving as a method
of advertising if you're givingto the church to help and you're
generally doing it from theheart you're not really doing it
it's advertising you're doing itbecause you care and and that's
what i try to do to best I canis if I want to help, but I
(17:30):
don't need the recognition forit.
I want God to be glorified forit.
So if there's any way that I candonate to the church or to a
church organization or tosomething that the church is
helping or assisting with orparticipating in, I want God to
have the glory for that.
I don't want the glory for it.
God's already blessed me.
So I want to bless somebodyelse.
(17:51):
And I think all of us could dobetter about that when we look
at it from a businessperspective.
If you're the type that needs abonus for doing it and you need
that extra incentive, it's a taxwrite-off.
I mean, charities are a taxwrite-off.
You know, church donations aretypically a tax write-off.
I'm not an accountant.
I don't know the tax law verywell, but I do know that, you
(18:12):
know, typically when I donate,it is.
I don't even usually put it inas that.
The accountant catches it anddoes it.
So, you know, it's just a matterof what you feel led to do.
And you don't do it to putyourself in a...
You don't do put yourself in abind, but if you're able to,
there's several ways to do it,but giving back to the
community.
(18:32):
is the same as giving back toGod.
If you're doing it from theheart and you're doing it for
the right reasons and you'redoing it to the right places,
you're giving back to God.
You're giving back to God'skingdom.
You're giving back to God'speople to help them.
And in doing so, just bethankful and be generous.
Don't do it with a chip on yourshoulder about it.
(18:56):
Do it because you want to.
And do it because good will comeof it.
If you do it, Scripture says Godwill bless you for that.
God will bless you for beinggenerous, for not being greedy,
for not being selfish, becausewe need to help each other.
It's a terrible world we livein.
It's rough.
(19:18):
It's hard to trust people.
It's hard to get ahead.
It's cruel.
It's disgusting.
So be the light in that worldand help when you can.
Help somebody when you can.
And you'd be surprised, I think, how many people end up seeing
(19:38):
the good in that.
And if it's coming through thechurch, I'd love to know how
many people have turned to Godor turned back to the church and
found God or let God come intotheir lives after they were able
to do something good becausesomebody blessed the church.
in a manner that they couldminister and help the community.
(20:00):
I'd love to know that.
I'll never know that.
That's not really for me toknow.
But I'd love to know thatbecause I think the numbers
would be surprising.
I think we would be surprised athow many people turn to a
Christian life after the churchministers to them and helps
them.
Now, I know many people who havebeen helped and ministered by
the church many times and nevercame to God and rarely came to
(20:26):
the church And really, we'reprobably just letting the church
do it and taking advantage ofthem.
That happens.
There are people out there whowill take whatever they can from
the church because they know thechurch will try to help and
typically won't say no.
But sometimes we do put our footdown, right?
We say enough's enough.
(20:47):
But you're not doing it fortheir return.
You're doing it for God'sblessings.
You're doing it because God hasinstructed us to do it.
So it's just a matter of how youlook at it.
But as we, you know, as wecelebrate Labor Day, there's
some, you know, just rememberthat what you have been blessed
(21:09):
with, we shouldn't be sohesitant to give back.
I'm blessed enough today thatI've got a job where I can take
the day off, at least part ofit.
I'm using that time to try tobring a message to people.
But there's so many people whodon't have that opportunity and
financially don't have the timeto take the day off and spend or
the ability to take the day offto spend with their families.
(21:31):
They have to work becausethey're check to check.
They're barely making that.
So, you know, if you can help, help.
If you can donate, donate.
Most people's businesses, ifthey're successful, are able to
do that to some degree.
But, you know, you can tie it tochurch corporately as well as
(21:51):
personally.
And I think we should do thatmore.
I don't have a habit of tithingfor my businesses I should
probably do that.
I just tithe for my paycheck.
So...
you know, that was a lot tothink about this week.
And I think I probably need tostart doing that.
I do some of these other thingswhen I can, but that's probably
(22:12):
tied every week from mybusiness.
You know, and how much you do isup to you.
But, you know, we're asked toattend in Scripture.
And if you can do more, do more.
I hope everybody enjoys theirLabor Day.
I hope everybody, you know, started school is back into the
swing of things and stayingsafe.
(22:32):
If you a born-again believer andredeemed, sincerely a child of
God.
I just pray you think on thatthis week and maybe we can all
change how we view our money andwhat we do with it.
Just pray on it and see wherethe Lord leads you.
And I pray that God blesses youabundantly for whatever you're
(22:56):
able to do.
Anyways, I love everybody.
I hope you have a great week.
If you have any questions orcomments, don't hesitate to
reach out.
with that link at thedescription.
I always look forward to talkingwith people and conversing about
some things off of each other.
Hope everybody has a great week.
Until next time, God bless.
