let's get started. Here we are alot 10 of 10 on how to move from
(01:11):
operator to owner in yourbusiness in law. 10 is balanced
the work and personal life. As abusiness owner, it's easy to get
caught up in the day to dayoperations and really neglect
your personal life I've livedthis, but finding the right
balance between work andpersonal life is essential for
your well being and the successof your business. Remember, if
(01:33):
you're not healthy, bothmentally and physically, you
can't have a healthy business. Idon't love the whole idea of
balance work and personal life.
I mean, I've named the episodethat. But of course there are
going to be seasons where you'rebusy at work. And that's
expected. As a business owner, you can expect to be crazy busy,
(01:54):
you can expect to work 50 6070hours a week. The issue is that
if you're doing it every week, that's a problem. And that's
what I want to talk a little bitabout today, if you're finding
yourself overworked andoverwhelmed, not just that
certain seasons within the year, that are your busy seasons, if
you're an accountant, and it'stax time, yes, you're going to
(02:15):
be busy. I mean, you're notgoing to get around that in our
footwear stores. Our busiesttime is the spring of year, you
know, April, May, June, everybody is freeing the feet,
they're getting out of theirboots are moving into sandals,
it's crazy busy, we need to beall hands on deck. But if you're
busy and all hands on deck everyday, every week, every month of
the year in your particularposition of being the operator
(02:38):
and owner of your business.
That's a problem. And you needto address that. Because as you
start feeling the overwhelm asthe weight comes down on your
shoulders. And if you haven'ttackled these previous nine laws
already are pieces of them, you're going to feel the burden
and the pressure. And you'regoing to suffer either
physically or mentally, and feelas though you don't want to do
(03:01):
it anymore. That's not why yougot into business you got into
business because it's supposedto free you up, it's supposed to
give you the life that youdeserve and want as a business
owner, you need to structure andframework your business so that
you're allowed to have thefreedom that you first thought
of when you got into business.
And we've habitual alizedourselves quite often, when I
(03:25):
work with a lot of clients, theyjust feel that they have to make
these decisions, they have to beinvolved. They can't release the
trust portions, a lot of thesedifferent things we've talked
about over these last nineepisodes here and the 10 laws.
And think about all of thesethings and how you can make
these small improvements, howyou can Kies in your business,
(03:46):
as we talked about back in theprocess, the small improvements
that will make magnificentadvancements for your life and
your business along the road. Afew years back, I created a
planning system for businessowners. I call it the one page
planner, it's a journalingsystem. You can download it at
simplifying entrepreneurship.comforward slash planner, it's
(04:07):
free. We'd love your take on itto see if it works for you or
not. But really it's a set ofPDFs and it revolves around
understanding what you want outof your life and creating the
prime priorities to move thatahead. So the difference between
this and so many other plannersis it's really catered to Well,
I built it for myself becauseI'm an entrepreneur and I needed
(04:28):
it. I need the structure aroundcreating the priorities,
understanding that the bucketsof life, my health, my wealth,
my vision, my relationships, allof these things need attention,
and they need to be able tocreate the business that allows
me to focus on these buckets oflife. The business is supposed
to support the life that I wantto live. That's why I'm a
(04:50):
business owner. If I didn't havethat happen, then I might as
well go work for someone else.
Being a business owner isn't foreveryone. There's a lot of risk
but there's A lot of reward too.
And if you aren't experiencingsome of the reward, then we need
to set up these 10 laws in orderto help you get there. In the
one page planning system, I havesort of an allotment for what I
(05:12):
call free focus and flex days.
And I stick to my free days asmuch as I possibly can enjoying
the time off. This past March,my wife and I went away for
about three and a half weeksaway from the business out of
the country. And that was partof my free day planning
structure, I plan other timesoff throughout the year to so
(05:34):
that I get my structure iEverybody has different ways on
how they like to enjoy theirfree days, as a retailer, I
often work Saturdays, that'sokay with me, I just take
different days off, some peoplerefuse to work weekends, other
people want to take blocks ofweeks off, it doesn't matter.
They're all uniquely yours. Butthe idea is that you have to
structure in your free time. Andyou have to structure in your
(05:55):
focus time that you're going tobe focused on making money for
your business and doing makingthe decisions that are going to
take this business ahead so thatyou can live a better life. And
so can the rest of your team andyour clients. So there's all
sorts of different ways tocreate work and life balance in
your schedule. Step one is justhave a schedule around them,
(06:16):
right? Start to put it in yourcalendar, when you're gonna go
for the dog walk when you'regonna go skiing, when you're
gonna go play golf, when you'reput it in the calendar. Because
if you don't block off the time, here's the thing with most
business owners, if you don'tblock off the time, the time
will fill itself with otherthings that are less important
than you being healthy and youbeing available to your family
(06:39):
and you being involved in yourrelationships that your family
and your friends and your kids, your parents and everybody else
that means something to you.
Your business should allow youthe freedom to do some of the
things that you want to do notjust be working 50 6070 hours a
week making the decisions thatyou need to make in your
(06:59):
business. That's the whole ideaof the 10 laws here that we've
put forth. I want to take thisback to law number three, a
little bit around cultivatingyour leadership skills just to
put a bow on the end of the 10laws here. And ultimately, when
you're cultivating yourleadership skills, and you're
crafting the CPA, right, you'rebecoming a better communicator,
(07:23):
you're aligning better process,and you're aligning your
accountability in your business,it's going to help you align, to
have a better life, to havebetter freedom to have more
freedom, the freedom to do whatit is that you choose to do as
the business owner. And thinkabout that inside your business
and outside your business rightinside your business. You want
(07:46):
to be working in what I callyour love zone and have a whole
framework around that. Feel freeto reach out to me around the
love its own framework. Butbasically, you want to be
working your love its own.
Anytime you're working in yourbusiness, you don't want to be
frustrated by it, I'm going touse accounting as an example
here. I'm actually pretty goodat accounting. I just don't like
to do it. So I've hired abookkeeper. And Michelle works
(08:09):
and loves bookkeeping. And she'sreally good at it. She's
structured, she does everythingshe needs to do to move through
all of her tasks and chores andaccounting, which will drive me
crazy, but she loves it. Sothink about all of the different
things within your business thatyou don't want to do anymore and
free yourself up from thosealign and assign the
(08:32):
accountabilities set up theprocesses, so that you can be
working in the areas that giveyour business and your life the
biggest boost. Ultimately, whenyou're working, you want to be
working in a position where itdoesn't feel like work. Here's
when you know if you love whatyou're doing. If at the end of
the day, you've worked a 10 hourday, it was a long day. And you
(08:53):
don't feel tired, you feelinvigorated, you feel excited,
you feel you know empoweredabout all of the things you've
been working on, you're workingin your love zone, if at the end
of the day you feel sort ofoverrun, overworked, worn out
time for bed, all that sort ofstuff, you probably have some
work to do around aligning someof the chores, tasks and
(09:14):
responsibility decision making, that you have to do within your
business, and assigning andaligning it to someone else. So
that you can truly work in yourlove zone. And they can do
because when that happens, you're going to have more time,
more passion, more power, foryour business and for your
personal life. And that's whatessentially I want for you as
(09:35):
the business owner of yourbusiness. Because you own your
business and it shouldn't ownyou and if you're feeling that
way. It's time to make somechanges. And of course, I'm
always here to have aconversation with you just go to
speak to pete.com speak topete.com and we'll have a little
chat to see if we're a rightfit. I hope you've enjoyed this
(09:55):
10 law structure here. and thinkabout how you can apply each of
these laws to your business tomake your business and life even
better. Now go and make it agreat day
