Calibama Talking with Chef Lorious

Calibama Talking with Chef Lorious

Welcome to Calibama Talking with Chef Lorious. Calibama Talking is a weekly podcast hosted by Chef Lorious (everybody’s auntie) and her mom, Mama VJ (the community grandma). Born in California and raised by a close-knit family anchored in southern tradition from Alabama, this “Calibama” girl learned very early that food cooked with love has the power to inspire and heal. Food opens the door to conversation and that’s exactly what Chef Lorious and Mama VJ do best...talk about everything. No subject is off limits, from favorite foods and table talk, to the latest family antics. The ladies also have guests and talk about the stuff that makes life interesting, like getting past hurts, making major life decisions, figuring out who you are and what you believe (not what your mama believes), and how to break-up with a friend (or whatever)! And in case you’re wondering, these ladies don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things. Come on into the Love Lab (Chef Lorious’s kitchen), for real talk and honest discussions about food, family and this thing called life.

The holidays are upon us and that means family traditions.  But sometimes you want to do something different; you want to start a new tradition...or maybe you just want to do something different this year.  Covid has given us all an opportunity to reassess how we will celebrate in 2020.  Today Mama VJ and I are joined by a special guest - Edward Coles. Edward comes from a ministerial family and is a fourth-generation preacher in th...

Whether you like it or not, things are always changing. Familiarity makes it hard to embrace anything different. Today Mama VJ and I talk about the reality of change and how we deal with it. How to push past what you’ve always known, to get to who you are supposed to be.

We’ve all heard it:  “Good people can do bad things”. So is that an excuse for bad behavior or is it a realization of the flaws in our humanity?  If you’re a “godly” person is it possible to do something “ungodly”...and if so, what does that really mean??  Mama VJ and I have a real and raw conversation about this today. Take a listen and challenge what you always thought.

We all want to be heard.  We all want to be understood.  Sometimes, however, despite our best intentions, we just don't quite get it when we hear about the plight or experiences of others.  We all have different backgrounds and experiences.  To empathize with someone is to feel for them, but it doesn't mean you have to own their feelings.  Empathizing also doesn't mean that you're guilty.  It just means you see ...

Last time we talked about the lies we tell our kids. Well, that conversation led Mama VJ and I to start thinking and talking about the lies we tell ourselves. This conversation was so enlightening to us both, as we realized it’s more about the truths we don’t tell ourselves often enough. Enjoy today’s conversation and re-engage with the truth.

Parenting is one of the most difficult, and rewarding things you’ll ever experience. It’s not difficult because of the kids, it’s difficult because of all the stuff you wish you could shield your kids from. So what do we do as parents?  We lie!  Not deceitful lies, but the protective kind that we hope will protect their hearts. Inevitably, this doesn’t work...but we keep trying!!!  Today mom and I talk about the kids we tell our ki...

How many times do we know the right thing to do, but then in a split moment, we don't follow through?  It's actually a form of self-betrayal.  Today Mama VJ and I talk about keeping it 100 with yourself and following your gut.  Most of the time, if not all of the time, there's a moment when your conscience lets you know what to do.  That's where it all begins.  What do you do next?

Have you taken time to stop and acknowledge your own personal growth?  We spend a lot of time on self-help books and self-improvement.  But every now and then, you have to slow down and recognize how far you've come.  Personal development is on-going, but it's important to recognize your own growth.  Today Mama VJ and I discuss our own individual growth and give ourselves a pat on the back!

Wouldn't it be nice if there were never disagreements or fall-outs with people.  Oh well, time goes on. Life continues. And then....we have to face the past again, and often we face the people we've had disagreements with.  Don't you hate it when you try to mend fences and the other person's version of the story is completely different from the facts as you remember them?  That makes me mad!!  Today Mama VJ and ...

It's back to school time and today mom and I are talking about shifting our mindset in this virtual school environment.  But as always, the conversation doesn't just stick to issues surrounding back to school and the new normal COVID-19 has created for parents and kids.  We dig into heart posture and attitudes about being told what to do.

Have you ever noticed how we as believers can talk a good game about &quo...

On this episode of Calibama Talking Mama VJ and I are discussing whether it’s ok for Christians to drink alcohol. I grew up very Pentecostal Holiness, so for most of my life the answer has been “NO”. But today, we tackle the subject and have a respectful conversation about it.

Some Biblical principals and scriptures were discussed. Here’s the reference for them in case you want to read more.
