Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello from the Amplify newsroom. I'm Ashley Nolan. In the
Act Assembly, the Canberra Liberals are calling on the Act
Government to guarantee there'll be no cuts to staff, programs
or support in our public schools until a review into
school resources is finished. It comes after it was revealed
a majority of Act public schools are expected to go
(00:23):
over budget by the end of this year. Meanwhile, the
canber Liberals will also move a motion in the Assembly
today asking the Act Treasurer to confirm whether the latest
budget complies with the Financial Management Act. There are calls
for a tax increase on private health insurers to be scrapped,
(00:43):
with the cost set to be passed on to customers.
The Camber Times reports Private Healthcare Australia is campaigning against
the ten percent tax increase, saying it unfairly targets Canberrans
with health cover. Those on single plans would pay an
additional sixteen dollars a year. Our families will be charged
an extra thirty three dollars. The territory's housing target is
(01:05):
slipping further out of reach, according to the Property Council
Act Executive Director Ashley Berry says the latest ABS dater
for new housing approvals showed volatility in the system.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
In July we saw two hundred and nineteen homes approved
across Canberra. We need to be approving seven hundred and
seventy per month to hit the ACT government's thirty thousand
homes target.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
We're being reminded to take action and make preparations now
that storm season has begun. ACT State Emergency Service Chief
Officer Steve Forbes is urging Canberrans to prepare their homes now.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
One of the most common things we saw in the
last twelve months his properties that have been damaged from
previous storms that just hadn't had those final repairs done.
So getting in and getting that sorted now before those
really heavy rains start to hit the territory is really important. Really,
it's on the homeowner to look after those more permanent repairs.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Construction officially starts on the new bug Indoor High School today.
The new permanent site for the school on Birchfield Drive
will open at the start of twenty twenty seven and
will include modern classrooms, sports, field and agricultural plot and
kiss and drop zones. New laws that will bring down
the cost of medicines on the PBS have made it
through Federal Parliament. From January one, drugs listed on the
(02:24):
scheme will cost a maximum of twenty five dollars and
seven dollars seventy for pensioners and Camberans are encouraged to
roll up their sleeves and get their aprons out across
this month for RSPCA Cupcake Day, we're encouraged to bake
for our colleagues to help raise money for animals in
need at the local shelter.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
It is a really nice social thing to do. It
is a serious underlying reason and that is to support
us here at the RSPCI to look after all our wonderful.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
