Cannabis Goldsmith - A Show About Art and Design

I'm Alex D.—a photographer, a designer specializing in botanical jewelry, including cannabis-to-metal casting techniques. As a member of the Canadian Jewellers Association and Craft Ontario, I'll give you an unfiltered look at how art is created, studio techniques, and design thinking in each episode. Live every week from my artist’s studio on the St. Lawrence River in South Eastern Ontario Canada, Cannabis Goldsmith is a solo deep dive into art & design in all its forms. We explore everything from clearing evil spirits from your studio, to marketing and selling your own art.

Culturally, much of America now appears to be built on the shifting sands of sweet memory and Hollywood myth, as the world can now plainly see.

As the world cauterizes itself against America's rapid slide into chest-thumping autocracy or mayhem, it 's becoming apparent that many no longer consider US cultural products attractive or of any value at all.

US cultural products are so tainted by politics they will soon be complete...

Once a big project ends I've found it wise to clear my works surfaces in the workshop and studio to make room for new projects. A bit of cleaning and tidying provides closure on the last project while opening space for new ideas to develop.

Close friends visit me and there was much eating and talking.

There are some answers in this podcast that will help your pivot to video. I've been a still photographer for more than a half a century, and I've been experimenting with video creation for the last 6 years. Switching from producing still photography to videos can be daunting, but still photographers can deal with it. In fact, we bring important skills to video production that can take a video to the next level.

Canadian diamonds were once a thing. Conflict-free and clean, but expensive to extract. They were diamonds you could feel good about buying, and that was their main selling proposition. People would pay more for them, knowing they weren’t contributing to wars and child labor. But that all ended once lab grown diamonds came onto the market. Diamond prices are crashing now, as we predicted, and it makes no sense to mine them in Canad...

Wouldn't it be great to make your art and do nothing else? But it turns out we have to sell the art, talk about the art, market the art, build websites, clean the studio, and sort out the learnings we acquired while making the art.

I completed the master model design for the Spencerville Fair Sterling Silver Trophy Buckle and now I'm using the open space between projects to clean the studio, and plan the visual marketing ca...

I'm up with the birds at 4 am to talk about how to use the forcing function to do just about anything, to learn about anything, with almost no effort. Use the forcing function to slingshot around the moon to escape gravity while increasing your speed, to maximize your leverage in life. This is the hack the empowerment and self esteem gurus are always trying to sell you for huge amounts of cash or subscription fees, but you'...

I think the Canadian Prime Minister's wife needs fashion advice and here it is. She is being treated in a demeaning way visually by our prime minister at public events, and that has to stop. Her fashion choices are making matters much worse. I suggest some fashion fixes for our Prime Minister's wife so she can display her own personality on Canada's public stage to step out of her husband's shorter public shadow.

There will come a time when you will want people to see your art. Whether it's shown on on the wall of your local coffee shop, at one of your country's most important and oldest county fairs, or at a gallery, you will eventually have to pitch your art to strangers.

In this episode I explain how I pitched the Spencerville Fair Organizing Committee on an idea for a Sterling Silver Trophy Belt Buckle to celebrate their 170th an...

This podcast has always been about trying to understand what art means. Yesterday, I listened to a New Yorker podcast where David Remnick interviewed Brian Eno on his new book on art called What Art Does: An Unfinished Theory. I ordered the book immediately, but it did not arrive in time for the podcast, so today's show is about what I want the book to be about. I've never really thought about what art does until yesterday,...

Today's pop music is very strange compared to the pop music of the past - it seems familiar, yet it's not. It sounds like a song you might have heard before, but it isn't.

Today's pop music is less shaped by creativity and more designed by licensing considerations, technology, and media monopolies. I explained what happened to pop music in this episode of the show and how we can fix it. But will we?

We have a pretty large county fair here in the fall called the Spencerville Fair. They have an art building filled with photography, paintings, quilts and other art from the community. I hope to shine a light on their arts building and perhaps even design a Sterling Silver belt buckle for the fair's 170th Anniversary. I will go to the fair's organization meeting next week to see if I can participate in some way.

Canadians are like the fish who don't know they live in water.

Most people outside Canada do not know that Canada has a highly controlled media, news, and digital information space.

We see what our government wants us to see, and tomorrow we will see what kind of an impact near total government control of communications in a G7 country has on election results.

I'll be back on Wednesday with a show about coffee table books an...
