(00:04):
Hello and welcome to Captivatethe Mic with Elaine Williams.
So delighted that you arespending some time with me today
and you're going to love thisepisode where I interviewed Jill
Lublin, a PR expert who I'veknown for years and years, who
also does kindness circles.
She helped me get in the NewYork times and with having in
(00:26):
post and she helped me get onTV.
so I sit back.
Enjoy.
I think you're going to lovethis episode.
Hi everybody.
I am so excited to have thefabulous and amazing Jill Lubin
PR guru.
(00:47):
She and I have been friends foryears and I am so delighted Jill
that you have taken the time tocome be on Captivate the Mic.
And share some of your beautifulheart and soul and your amazing
expertise.
I know you helped me get on TV.
You helped me with my America'sGot Talent in New York times.
You helped me with so manythings.
(01:08):
So welcome thank you for beinghere.
I am super excited to be withyou, Elaine, always.
So thank you for having me.
Yeah.
So I want to dive right in.
I know we're super busy.
I want to know you've done PRforever.
You're an adventurer.
You're a seeker.
Tell me about the whole circlesof kindness.
I feel like we all need that nowmore than ever.
(01:31):
Yes, we do need that more nowthan ever.
And, I've been doing kindnesscircles for gosh, four years
now.
And it's based on my book, TheProphet of Kindness, which I
wrote as we all know, yes, weneed more kindness than ever.
In these kindness circles, It'sso wonderful.
We bring together.
I've got over a thousand peoplein the community.
(01:52):
Now we bring together people onvideo.
We connect together.
We create kindness together.
We ask for what do you neednext?
And we give it to each other.
And then often I'll have a 10minute speaker.
In fact, to celebrate WorldKindness Day, I actually had
Jack Canfield.
Is that exciting?
I love him.
(02:13):
I got to meet him and hang outwith him once.
I bet that was fabulous.
It was super amazing.
And I was very blessed as we allwere.
And I've had some really amazingpeople, including many people
who've been featured in peoplemagazine and.
all kinds of places that, kindpeople hang out and read.
So just really great.
(02:34):
I've been really lucky.
Let me just say that.
And so we do this every month.
Once a month, it's completelyfree.
I'd love for you to post thelink.
It's joelublin.
com slash kindness circles, please come one, come all and
let's be kind together.
I love that.
And I think when you can connectlike minded people and people
(02:56):
who are on the same vibe.
It's just it grows and itblossoms and it blooms.
That's awesome.
And how many books have youwritten now?
Four.
They're all right.
Four.
Yes.
And my latest are The Prophet ofKindness and then the third
edition of Guerrilla publicity.
So wow.
(03:17):
Mostly what I go out and I speakon all over the world and help
companies create cultures ofkindness together.
And as well as.
Getting your name out there.
That's important.
I love that.
So you speak, you write and yourun these circles of kindness,
and are you still doing your oneday PR bootcamp?
(03:39):
I actually do.
Medium mastery intensive.
Now everything's been redone andre created so that I'm
delivering a lot of value atonce.
And it's called the MediaMastery Intensive.
So super short days together toget your publicity done and
people actually pitch mediaright there.
So that's just been awesome.
I love that.
Cause one of the things I likedabout you were like, let's do it
(04:03):
now because I know I'm a notetaker and a recovering
perfectionist.
And so many times asentrepreneurs, we're like swirl
and we have these, shelf help.
All these ideas and notes andnever get to the total fruition.
And so that's one thing I loveabout, I feel like your work.
We're a lot similar in that oflet's get it done.
(04:25):
It doesn't have to be perfect.
Yes, I'm definitely a get itdone kind of woman, and I just
would say, progress, notperfection.
I think people get really stuckin trying to be perfect or
getting it right.
Part of it is just let's get itout.
That's really the key.
Let's just get it out.
I'm always like, correct andcontinue, let's get it out.
And then, or as T Harbecker usedto say, ready, shoot, aim or
(04:50):
ready to fire.
And now a quick break.
Are you an expert and you arespeaking already, but you're not
having fun with it or maybe youfeel like your presentation is
kind of boring or you have ahard time grabbing them and
keeping them engaged andinvolved?
I am a a professional speakerand a speaker coach, so I love
(05:14):
helping people grab theiraudience.
And actually have fun no matterthe topic.
I have tools to keep an audienceengaged and actually on the edge
of their seats the entire time.
So if you want to talk about howto be more engaging, more
(05:34):
captivating, no matter thetopic, let's set up a call.
I'd love to just meet you andfind out what you're speaking
about, what you want to do,where you want to go and see if
it's the right fit.
And we're back.
Now, if you were going to give,if you were going to give
somebody a super tip, likeyou've been, this is not your
(05:54):
first rodeo.
You have been around, right?
What do you see entrepreneurs?
What's a mistake we make oftenor, what is one or two super
tips that could just be like, well, first of all, the biggest
mistake is not doing anything,or letting fear holds you back
or perfectionism or, and takingno steps for visibility.
(06:14):
So baby steps, you like the babystep that baby steps are the key
to success.
And that really is an importanttip.
I suggest 30 minutes ofvisibility building activities
every single week.
Okay, now that can be two 15minute segments, by the way.
(06:35):
Come on, people.
You're walking to therefrigerator and back or waiting
in line at Starbucks.
You could be doing somevisibility building activities.
And so I'm going to recommendthat.
30 minutes a week to start.
Keep momentum because one of thethings that's so important in
publicity is to be consistentand persistent in the
(06:55):
marketplace and really, keepyourself out there up there and
connect to people.
So that they keep rememberingyou.
I call it the, I've heard of yousomewhere syndrome, which would
be my next tip, right?
It's actually that ties into theother one, create the, I've
heard of you somewhere syndrome.
And that's by doing increasedvisibility building activities
(07:19):
every single week makes a bigdifference.
And I think that's reallyimportant.
And the other wow tip would bego to national day calendar.
com Find two holidays, maybe, yeah, two, because I want you to
work it, for looking at whatworks for you for the upcoming
(07:40):
year, or, in this calendar year, and see what would be a great
way.
for people to pay attention toyou and do something different.
Like a divorce coach I workwith, she has a great wonderful
way that people can raise theirkids, even when they're getting
divorced, so for Valentine'sday, we have a whole piece
(08:01):
called how to fall out of loveon Valentine's day.
Lover Unconscious coupling.
Yes.
Yes.
Go contrary.
Love it.
Isn't that fine?
No I love this and I'm justreflecting on when I was,
working with you a few yearsago.
I think.
So many times I think, oh, PRand it feels like this daunting
(08:25):
thing.
But when you say 30 minutes aweek, that feels very doable.
And then I imagine, I know somany times, once I get going
into something, I really getinto it and then I don't want to
stop, but I'm actually havingfun with it.
So I love that concept of like30 minutes a week.
And that could really change.
(08:46):
And the other thing I wanted totag onto what you were saying,
Jill, I remember when I came outto do a VIP day with you and you
suggested that I write for theHuffington post and I was
excited.
And then I was like, all thisstuff cams up, right?
I'm not good enough.
Who am I?
Because of your coaching, I wentto Arianna Huffington and I
(09:07):
brought her my book and my tshirts and I couldn't believe I
got in the building and thecollege person said, we want you
to write for the college.
I was speaking on collegecampuses all over the country at
the time.
And I was very uncomfortable.
But I did it anyway because Iwas committed.
And I think that is really, Iwork with people in visibility
(09:28):
too, with this video, gettingtheir keynotes to convert and
podcast guesting.
So I think it's that it'suncomfortable, right?
It's out of our comfort zone, that next level of visibility.
Yes.
And when you haveaccountability, kindness, and
think of baby steps, that.
That makes it doable.
I think that's where a lot ofpeople get tripped up.
(09:51):
I know I still do in certainthings.
Yes, but part of that is keepingthe focus and keeping the baby
steps going.
And I think that's where mostpeople somewhat lose the game of
publicity.
And honestly, a way to win it,simple way, this is a great tip,
is stay in focus.
(10:11):
With your publicity, what's yournext step?
What's your next step?
You don't have to take the wholemountain.
I'm not concerned if you get inUSA Today, the morning, the view
the Today Show, or What isimportant is that you keep
taking baby steps.
So that's a key.
I love that.
Yes.
(10:31):
And it, I know for me, I'm arecovering drama queen, so I
want the doo! And, sometimes Aswhen I was doing comedy, I would
think, you know what?
It's one more credit.
Sometimes the gig was great.
Sometimes it was, you wereawesome, but the crowd was
hardly there or whatever.
But I would think it's one morecredit.
Keep going.
(10:52):
That's right.
I've got 30 more minutes onstage.
Keep going.
Keep going.
That's right.
That's right.
And that really is what it is.
Keep going.
And you know what, honestly, forall of us, you want to talk
success, it's keep going.
And publicity successspecifically relates to that
continuous movement andcontinuous flow so that people
keep going.
I've heard of you somewhere.
(11:14):
I've heard of you somewhere.
And it may be the smallest, tiniest little piece.
One of the things I invest inmyself with masterminds and stay
committed.
And I heard Jack Canfield talkat one of my masterminds and he
was saying specifically thatpublicity was the very thing
that drove all of his success.
The very thing, isn't thatamazing?
(11:36):
And that is what I'm talkingabout.
Wow, I love that.
And for people listening, I talkabout in the old days, there
were three TV channels, three.
And you had to spend thousandsand thousands of dollars to get
on them or have the PR personand you had to sign three, five,
six months.
And nowadays we have so manyother ways that we can be our
(11:58):
own.
PR person and you don't have tospend a 10, 000 retainer.
Because so many people I say Ihate social media or I don't
like this.
And I get that.
And if you can reframe it, thatcan make it more palatable.
Yeah.
And let me just tell you, I justread an article inspected funny.
You should say that because I'mteaching my media mastery
(12:20):
intensive during this time.
And one of the things we foundout that an average public
relations 14, 400 a month.
Okay.
Now most people will do not havethat kind of money laying
around.
And my heart lies with theentrepreneur and giving you real
world ways to get this outquickly and wonderful news.
(12:42):
Wonderful news.
Everyone is that the opportunityto get media has been so
expanded and increased more, more than ever before.
And that is incredible so thatwe have everything from social
media, LinkedIn lives, TikTok,Instagram lives where you're in
(13:02):
complete control.
Plus all the wonderful podcastsand wonderful opportunities to
get out there in simple, easyways, literally, just quick and
fun and podcast opportunities, blogs, and then the traditional
media.
Which also now lives in multipleplaces, both obviously online
(13:23):
and offline.
So you can get an Inc.
com and Forbes.
com and Entrepreneur.
com, even if you don't get inthe magazine.
There's just all kinds of greatways in.
Yes.
That is so true.
And I don't know if this happensfor you, but people will reach
out to me and ask me if I canspeak and they'll always say,
(13:44):
Oh, Elaine, we've been stalkingyou.
So when people discover you, when you have a bunch of podcast
episodes and articles and youhave this treasure trove of
things, even if they justdiscovered you, it's bam, drop
the mic credibility.
Love that.
Yes.
And that is what publicity does.
(14:05):
It has you get seen, get heardand get paid.
That's a biggie, right?
And it has you have theopportunity to really monetize
your message and multiply yourreach because you're able to
reach so many more people thanjust one by one.
So much better.
So much better.
(14:26):
One to many.
One to many.
We had a mentor who would talkabout that a lot.
In closing, Jill, do you want toleave us with one favorite
success story or one more supertip or something to give them
something to go out with a bang?
Yes.
I want to give you a super tip, although I love telling success
stories, and I have many, butlet me tell you a great tip, and
(14:49):
that is get on Google Alerts.
Put your name on Google Alerts.
And put one thing for instance, kindness, when the Prophet of
Kindness came out, I put theword kindness and that's how I
discovered World Kindness Day isNovember 13th.
I'm going to tell you a lie.
You don't even know this.
I was at two Fox TV stations, including Dallas, Texas.
(15:12):
Fox News on World Kindness Dayby Zoom.
And in my local market, Fox Newsmornings on two, big morning
show, all because of WorldKindness Day.
And that came from Google Alertsknowing this.
exists.
(15:32):
So I think it's really importantfor all of you that you continue
to look for opportunities,unique opportunities.
How can you get your name outthere?
Google alerts will alert you towhat the media is talking about.
And that's a great thing toknow.
I love that, Jill.
