(00:05):
There's a professional radio. That's front wheel drive.
Have you got anyone you want to thank?
Just myself. And now I do the after hours,
gentlemen. What would you go for?
They see us in. There.
(00:27):
OK, and because it's not a superduck.
It's not. Automatic perfection comes in
the form of 2 letters A&U. Long away of my Ltd.
Welcome to Car Talk. It's Tuesday night here at 98.9
NW FM. It's me, Maddie J, online with
(00:48):
Mr Scuddy O Johnson, Mr. David Prince, and in the studio with
Mr Chad. The Bell.
How you guys going? Oh good.
Great. Thank you.
Still, Mel, thank you very much.Very, very good big few weeks of
car stuff which we'll cover very, very shortly.
Let's crack up with some fresh updates.
Scotty Doe fresh cuts man look looking fresh.
(01:09):
Thank you very much, always feeling nice and fresh.
Feeling nice and fresh. You look.
You're looking fresh, mate. You're looking fresh.
Alan's just walked in the studio.
Alan, how you doing? Man, Oh, Alan.
What's going on gentlemen? Gentlemen, can you hear me
nicely? I can't hear you though, so I
apologise. He's, he's got community duties
tonight. So he, he's, he's here, but he's
(01:30):
here in spirit. That's it, he's here.
Good to know. That's good.
We are also joined by Edward Bunting and Rob Zedai.
How are you guys? Good.
Thank you. Very good.
Good to see you guys. Ed Buntings.
There he is, Ed. There there's there's a there's
a Bunty. How are you, Ed?
Good. Hello.
Good, so we started with car updates.
(01:50):
Scotty's had fresh cuts so that's his first update.
What? What else has been happening
with you, Scotty? Today we drove all the way to
Franburn. We're running some errands for
for the wedding. This is going to happen on the
other side. We just had a look at the
wedding cake and flowers. So just dealing with all the all
(02:15):
the traffic and things, it just amazes me how much you start to
focus when it's actually like fairly busy in the traffic and
you just start tuning in and you're really looking to the
sides and watching them if they're going to merge in front
of you and stuff. You.
Know how they do? Yeah.
(02:36):
And you know how they talk aboutkeeping that safe distance and
how you kind of can't, because if I keep that safe distance,
someone's going to come flying over and take that spot and then
I have to slam on the brakes. But then you don't want to get
too close, so you're trying to keep this weird kind of distance
between them. That's not enough for someone to
come flying over. But also that right amount where
(02:58):
I can hit the brakes not runningtoo.
Yeah, absolutely. That in between.
And keep an eye out for white high ace vans.
Rangers. Rangers.
Yeah, Rangers. Rangers.
Well, that van, that van was on the Monash the other day.
That oh. Yeah, that was a big cook, that.
And he had hit 11 cars or 12 cars or something in the process
(03:20):
of weaving in and out of trafficon the thing.
That took him. Took him like 7 hours to get
him. Did did you see the the hit?
One, Yeah, copied him. That was amazing.
Incredible. Yes, yes.
But like if that was America, they would have pit manoeuvred
him and then he would have been long gone after about two
seconds. Shot of Tomahawk missile from
the sea. Basically.
That a bit of freedom, yeah, yeah, some bald eagles.
(03:42):
And they were. They would have.
Fly over the top. Man, so but yeah, I can't
believe it took him 70 hours to stop him.
Crazy. Do you guys remember that that
guy that that was was in the VS Commodore that that mowed people
down in the city? Do you guys?
Yeah, yeah, that was. Done.
And like, and they were doing like a news report and you just
see him in the background of it and he just like, he just looks
out of the window and he drove off and like, that was like
(04:03):
before any of that happened. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, like it's stuff like this.So you like, you wonder like,
why can't they be stopped a lot earlier than that?
If he's, you know, he's gone on a rampage for seven hours, 70
hours on who knows what, you know, that's putting other
people in danger. You what?
You'd kind of want to get that stopped, if you ask me.
Yeah, absolutely. And then there was a accident as
(04:24):
well on the freeway, so they've moved over to the the far right.
There was one car, I didn't knowhow, can't picture how the hell
it happened, but there was one car, BMW off on the on the side
and it looked like it was hit onthe front.
And then there was a car that was in the lane still in the far
right lane with hazards on and it had front damage, no other
(04:46):
cars. There was a tow truck there and
we had to move over to the left and they're all standing there
and stuff. So I had to do it.
I put down the window and said you can't park there mate.
Got to do it. I have.
To do it, I have to do it. Everyone was fine, the damage
wasn't that bad. So, you know, hopefully they
(05:06):
knew the joke. Yeah, yeah.
Surely you know by now. Yeah, I'm sure, I'm sure.
I've got a boat I. Don't know why they didn't just
move it to the side of the road, though, but could easily push it
to the side and get it off the freeway.
Well, that's what was going on. It was busy, busy, busy.
But yeah, as usual, the Blade that's in its prime on the
(05:28):
freeway. Oh.
Yeah. Sitting below 2000 RPM, just
chugging away. That was nice.
Yep, it was good, apart from thetraffic and everything.
Yeah, so I got a good run, and Ido have a new poster as well
that's connected to the advertisement of the R34 GDR,
(05:53):
the Midnight Purple 2. So yeah, some of you might have
seen it in the past, but that's a lot safer now until I do get
it. OK, exciting.
Yeah, so I've got that coming and a few little changes behind
me. So the back there on the glass
cabinets, the top there is a little bit different for the
(06:16):
keen eyed people. Everything else is the same, but
it was just. Is it like one of those spots of
difference things? Yeah.
Pretty much. But yeah, yeah.
I like what's different. Yeah, there's a 31 skyline
missing from the top. Second top Charles.
It's just it's not as full across the very top.
(06:36):
Yeah. On top of the cabinets, it's not
as full. You had some swords there at one
point, right? No, they're still up.
Good. They're up, they're up.
Yeah, they they hang up the top there now, but he has a few cars
and there's some that I'm given away for going to rob that I
(06:58):
just, it just doesn't fit my aesthetic of what I'm going for.
Yeah. Yeah.
Mercedes 1 just yeah, sorry Chaddoesn't fit the.
That's all right mate. Doesn't fit the home, so those
ones will go. There's another set that I might
be thinking about. It's a Forza Motorsports set
(07:20):
that I might be thinking about that's got 5.
It's up there five cars in a row.
That's I'm thinking like it doesn't really fit because it's
a whole bunch of different cars that you kind of want to keep
them in the packet, but someone might like them a bit more have.
You guys seen it? That's cute.
(07:43):
Nice. I'm I'm yet to find one day, but
if you find one, please let. Me.
Oh, don't worry. I, I've, I've trawled the
southeastern suburbs, the, I've stalked the woollies looking for
them. But I'll find them if they're
there. Don't you worry.
Oh. That's so cool you.
Have to do a hot wheel swap night.
Yeah, I think we do. So that's you, Scotty.
(08:06):
Yeah, that's that's me. Yep, done.
David Prince. I was on the podcast last week,
so I didn't get to talk about highball, so I probably missed
that opportunity, but we but it was there, very true.
And we did have a good it was a good event.
I mean, it's it was the themed around the Big steel.
(08:27):
Then the funniest thing of all was that it sent me a
screenshot. No, someone else sent it to me.
And then I sent it to you at theNissan Cedric, which was one of
the main characters from the BigSteel, which was for sale for
three grand the following week. So and it was a green one too,
which was the one the same colour as the movie.
It wasn't. No movie was blue light.
Blue. OK, Yep, Yep.
But. You know you wouldn't argue if
(08:49):
you don't have argued. You'd be happy to have a Cedric
there. I reckon had that been out been
on sale the week before I'd reckon someone on this podcast
might have just bought it. Well, I think if you're going to
have a big steel thing and the hero of the car is the Cedric
and hero the film is the Cedric,Yeah, you kind of have to have a
Cedric. I I sort of, I like their
(09:09):
enthusiasm, but I would have personally held off on that
theme until I had a Cedric. Then you could have the Cedric
and the Jag. Yeah, in the two main criteria.
If you were being really picky, you could then say, well let's
get a a burgundy Monaro coupe, ared Pintara sedan.
(09:32):
Probably the hardest car to findout of the.
Yeah. And a, a white Nissan Exa that
Joanna was going to be gifted, you know, on the on the front
lawn. I thought, you know, if you had
those, those are the cars of that film.
Yeah. And maybe a bond wood caravan
with a high resin finish, you know?
(09:54):
We still have to do that movie night.
Yeah, I've got the DVD. I'm very keen.
Absolutely. Other highlights of that were it
was for a modern car Mazda MX5 year old in an anniversary 35th
anniversary edition, so a current model in burgundy with
the tan interior and the number plate was Mazda Mazda.
(10:17):
So it ensued a a conversation. We, we just had to find out what
about the plate, But it was Mazda Australia and the guy
that's taken over the sort of the, the public relations and
the, and the historic sort of garage sort sort of thing said I
found all these plates in a drawer at head office.
They weren't on anything. They were just allocated.
(10:39):
They've got Rotary ROTAR. Y.
And these plates that would be worth $1,000,000 to the right
people. And yeah, it was.
So they, they thought that that was special enough that car to
actually have those plates. So that's their press car.
And when it comes off to press fleet, it's going into their
(10:59):
their heritage fleet. Yeah.
So that was good. Lovely to fight here of a
Japanese company embracing theirhistory and their heritage.
Nice to see about that. I took the Grand Prix Civic
which was good it. Gave that a bit.
Of a run that's driving very sweetly at the moment, which is
(11:19):
good had the exhaust fit. I think I mentioned the exhaust.
So it's got the dual the the dual pipes now, which fit the
body kit much better. That was at the end one had a
lot of other card shenanigans, but I'll be covered a little bit
later I think in the the updates.
(11:39):
But no good week all round. Lovely.
Little bit bouncing. Hello car updates.
I've taken a deposit on the Triton that's just waiting on
some finance to come through butthe lady has emailed me today so
lovely That looks like that willgo Mazda 2.
I'm driving around and that's still I've had a few bites on it
(12:01):
but no one's bought it yet but I'm sort of not too worried.
I quite like driving it It's it's a tough call between a
Mazda 2 and a swift and A and a jazz.
They all do different things well and you know those, those
little hatches, I think we said it last time, they really punch
above their weight and for for very little money you can, you
(12:22):
can just get into a great reliable car.
You know, there's there's no shortage of them around really.
There was one online I saw, you know this, this is mine's an O 9
Mazda 2 hatch, the one you see everywhere.
There's one online with 421,000 on the clock and I thought no
one's going to bother rebuildinga motor in one of those.
So it's I dare say it's originalbecause you're not restoring one
(12:42):
sort of thing. It was for sale for like 3-6 or
three seven with a roadie and ready to go at a dealer.
And I just was like. At a dealer.
At a dealer. So look, it might have been
traded or maybe they paid $200 for, I don't know.
But you just think, no, they, I mean, I thought they were a good
thing, but that that sort of proves that really are a good
thing. What else can I tell you car
(13:05):
wise? The wasp, the bloody wasp.
So it's got a. Sting, isn't it?
It's got a nasty sting in its tail that car.
So that car had new rear shocks. As I mentioned numerical me and
I put new front shocks in it andever since we put front shocks
in the front springs were binding and we couldn't work out
(13:26):
why. We tried in a few, the top hat
it has got 3 bolts. You can have it in sort of three
different positions. And we tried moving it around.
It still didn't make any difference.
And the thing with the springs were still binding on the struck
towers. And it was, you know, basically
what it was doing is, you know, you drive, you turn left and the
steering wheel would want to stay left.
You'd have to sort of wrench it back, right?
And it's going and it's, you know, it's grinding in there
(13:48):
somewhere. Not good so.
I put it in to a mechanic that Iuse and said, look, it needs the
trans fluid flushed, it needs the coolant flushed, it needs a
new van belt on the front, It needs the front brake discs
machine, it needs the right front drive shaft as per the
list initially. And by the way, can you figure
out what the hell we've done wrong on this front suspension?
(14:10):
He looked at it over a couple ofdays and he he said it like, I'm
baffled, like like I can't work it out.
You know, I'm like, I'm like, this is a magnet.
What the Hell's going on? This is not a, you know, a
Citroen with a de Deion suspension system or something.
You know, this is a fairly basicAustralian car.
So he said I've done these before, I've never had this
(14:32):
issue, you know, and I just, I was sort of at my wits end.
So I went to the forums, the Magnum Madness forum and I'll
put a little post that said thisis what's happening and this is
the clincher I gave. I kept one of the front shocks
that had come out of the car just 'cause I thought I might
just need that for reference. So I kept that and I gave that
to him and said look, this is the one that came out of the
(14:54):
front left. Put that back in and see what it
does. And it was still binding on the
body. And he's like, I can't work it
out anyway. Magnum, Magnum Madness forum
yesterday I think it was. I put that on.
They came to the party and said there's a little hole in the top
hat mount that needs to line up perfectly with a hole in the
bottom strut mount. So if those two aren't aligned,
(15:18):
it will not be exactly right andit will bind.
So I sent him through those photos last night and he goes.
God bless the Magna geeks. That's.
Once he lined that up and bang she, he said it's ready to go
there. You go.
There you go. So.
Can't talk? Top tip.
Well, top tube #1 he said, He said, I've never, I've done
(15:40):
these before on this, on Magnus,he said I've never had this
problem. But he said I'm an impulsive
compulsive marker. He always marks where it was.
So it goes back exactly the same.
That's why he's never had that issue.
But I said, well, we've learned something, haven't we, Chris?
You know, like they're good. Good to know that they are very
specific. But none of the YouTube videos
sort of talk about that when youwhen you watch it, you know you.
(16:02):
Just pull it in and just put it back.
In yeah, evidently they're a bitsensitive to that.
Maybe. A lot of cars probably aren't
sensitive to that sort of positioning.
That's a. Weird one.
So that's good. I don't have to sort.
Of reorder different shocks or do something else.
Because you had me scared. I'm like, I know I ordered for
you. I ordered.
Yeah, you ordered them via the VIN, of course.
(16:24):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And it's a, it's a verada verada
KJ. And I was like.
Yeah, I'm picking that up tomorrow morning with basically
everything has been done on thatexcept the windscreen.
I will get fitted later and the rocket cover gasket is leaking
at the back like they all do. But I'm going to do that with
(16:44):
Tommy because he's done it on his recently and that's
something we can do. And I'll replace all the plugs
at the same time. And then that that sorts that
car mechanically that is done, dusted, roadworthy.
I'll put it into panel and get the back bar done shortly just
so that that's you know. And then it's really it's I
(17:07):
think the other thing I was thinking with that car is I was
going to drive it over to Magnifest on the trade plate,
which I could still do. But what that means is you don't
get roadside assistance and the rulings, as we've said recently,
I think on RACV Total Care are such that you can have two
registered cars on your Total Care account and you can have up
to 15 club plated cars, which suits me quite well because
(17:30):
there's two registered cars. So I've got my Pajero, I've got
my Pajero being the car that I drive camping and towing caravan
and stuff. So it's kind of good to have,
you know, Total Care on that andthe mini, which I really don't
use very much, but you know, youdo kind of want because that's
full register. So I sort of thought I might
(17:50):
just maybe I'll have to registerthis thing, just put three
months worth on it just so I canhave that Peace of Mind of
having total care on it for thatjourney.
I think it's worth it. I think that's hard.
Because you know, you could. It'd ruin the whole thing.
You're stuck halfway to Adelaide, the thing blows up.
You can't get it towed like that, would be a real pain in
the ass. Yeah, dealer plate insurance or
(18:12):
something there, Ed. No, I just get normal insurance
on it, but I'm allowed to drive them on the trade plate.
So you. Can you can.
Do that, but I don't have roadside with that.
There was more the roads. Yeah, it's not covered.
Yeah, yeah. I've got insurance on it.
But so I think I might end up roadwaying that and registering
(18:33):
that sort of closer to Magna Fest date just so that you have
that. Cover.
You'd always cancel it. You get your money back if you
cancel it. If someone needs to stay bought
that car or something you're like well, so so that's the
wasp. Naughty, naughty stinky wasp.
What else? The bike still has a busted fuel
pump. I haven't done anything about
that. The Renault 16 I drove on the
(18:55):
weekend that I've been using that a bit lately.
My brother actually took it out today and said, oh, that car
loves the Peninsula roads Ed andI'm like, I know it does.
I took it out Sunday morning fora Fang, So that's running well.
Still leaking a lot of oil but running well.
It's got oil. I checked the oil.
Yep, I sold the murky 350 that went to a kid.
(19:15):
It's his first car. And I was like, you are driving
a very nice first car. I know it's not worth a lot of
money. You know, it's like 8 1/2 grand
that car sold it for. But but that isn't that is a
lovely machine. It's a first car, my first car.
Well, I still have it. It's the mini with no heater, no
radio, you know, like nothing. And you're driving around an E
(19:36):
Class. It's it's full of kid.
I was just like these kids. They just, I don't really don't
really appreciate it, you know? I've been saying for years kids
are doing P plates wrong these days.
Like you gotta do. It's like, like, like me 500
five, $100 laser was, was, yeah. With my PP, Yeah, yeah.
I know, I know the Ford Focus that I bought the little hatch
(19:57):
with 33,500 kilometres. That's gradually coming back to
life so but I've put some tyres on it.
I found a second hand front bum because it had a just a scrapey
front bar. I found a second hand one in
white that's really good. So I just had that literally
swapped on same colour. That looks great.
What else have I done? I did have a check for
Roadworthy. It only needed front discs and
(20:21):
pads, which Mehdi ordered me. Thank you for that.
And wiper blades and all the tyres.
I've done that. Oh, and the power steering.
The power steering is not working.
It's incredibly heavy. You need really need 2 hands to
turn that round a corner. And it turns out it's quite
common on those focuses. It's on the pump.
(20:42):
There is a, you know, threaded switch that goes into the pump
and it's got an electrical connector on the end that leaks.
And I you tubed it and apparently it's quite common.
And one of the Focus guys did a video on, yeah, you just replace
that and boom in your whole power steering, top it up and it
all comes back. You turn it to the left, turn it
to the rightfully a few times toget all the air out of the
system and then you're good. So that thankfully is, is
(21:05):
doesn't need a rack or a whole steering rebuild.
It's, it's literally just a $23 switch from eBay.
So that's arriving next week. And then I'll put that in to get
the disc done and that done and register that and then that'll
be kind of ready for sale prettymuch.
What else have we got? I can get trade discount at
Lamborghini if you want those. Yeah, So it's the same run
(21:27):
indicators or the side repeaters?
Side repeaters. Side repeaters.
It's so funny. Good tonight, then, that they're
in good meat. And and that they'll be like
$14,000 a pop at at Living Green.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
What is a trade discount, David?Yeah, yeah, 13,200.
No GST. Excluding GST.
(21:48):
I'm just looking across my desk at the array of service books
and Manila folder for each car. That's how I remember these, the
Hyundai I-30 I bought, that's a 2019 I-30 Go, which is the base
model normal white go district nursing spec.
That car that's really tidy. It's done 32,000 K, perfect
(22:08):
service history, all at Hyundai. That'll be ready for sale soon,
so if anyone wants to hear likesI-30, let me know.
What else is there? The Merc 380?
Did I mention the 380 last time?You.
Did. I haven't heard anything more on
the 380, but at the moment I'm sort of happy with the free
storage situation where it is, you know, it's a big girl being
the SEL. So yeah, that's just no doubt
(22:33):
resting at the workshop with. Resting.
Resting with probably not a lot done to it, but until I clear
out a few of these others, I'm still alright with that.
You know that could that can just be on the back burner.
That's the, That's your. Cars.
Yeah, I think that's it. Very good, Rob.
Last but least, not much to say. They're still still really not
(22:56):
much happening in the car front whatsoever.
More just driving that noisy diff van.
Did the lady buy it in the end or?
No, no, she didn't buy it. I drove her down there and she
didn't come. She she's looked at another one,
apparently. Yeah, Everyone must have this
thing about. I haven't driven it yet, but
they must have this feeling thatthe, you know, something might
(23:16):
be wrong. It's a Ford.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So.
But anyway, no. I missed that Mum, must have
missed that last week. Have you got it on the market?
Yeah, I'll put it on the market and yeah, well, I thought I'd
sell it because, you know, I went down to Jayco to have a
look at some vans over there already fitted out and they've
(23:39):
got some good second hand fiats and stuff like that with only
one year old just on 40,000 KS and they're $80,000 drive away
like you go. Oh, you know, there's still new,
there's still got new car warranty and you don't have to
fit it out. You're ready to go?
No, and I've spent like 60 odd on this thing before I even
(24:01):
started fitting it out. Yeah.
What do you reckon you'll get for it, Rob?
Like anywhere close. No, I reckon I got a stupid
offer of 48. I'm asking 58.
Yeah. And I think I'll get around that
mid 50s. They're 70 grand almost now.
(24:21):
Yeah, right. They're going up.
Yeah. Even though.
Bloody band. Yeah, it is.
There's a lot for a bloody van. Well, it's got a lot in it.
Makes me feel a bit sick. 70 grand.
I'd want something real Flash. You would think so, yeah, But if
you wanted to buy Mercedes with the pair?
Bases you caddy's 50. Yeah, you were saying that the
(24:41):
other week. That's. 100K for a Mercedes OH.
My God. I mean, yeah, 100K for a
Mercedes, sure. Just not that Mercedes.
Yeah. Yeah, that's just.
That's just depressing. What does a new Hiace cost?
Like if I just want a base manual Hiace in white, what does
that cost now? Yeah.
You'll be in the 60s for sure. Really. 60s for a Hiace.
(25:06):
Can't Google it let. Me, just look at that.
I should just deal in secondhandvans.
There's got to be a market for that.
There is, there would be, I could tell you right now, there
would be Van. Man.
Well, Speaking of Vance, I drovein the Tarago all weekend 'cause
my cousin who grew up with that car, he, he the oldest 1, he
came over from Scotland with hisfamily.
So I've been driving around in the, in the Tarago and it
(25:28):
literally, it's been the tour bus, you know, we've had it
full. I think I had eight people in
bed on one of the days. That would have spun him right
out. Yeah, yeah.
He's like, I picked him up from the airport and he and he goes,
I haven't seen this car in so long, you know, and it's exactly
the same other than the wheels. And so we're driving along and
I'm like, and he goes, oh, that noise, that noise.
(25:50):
And then he had to drive, he hadto drive down the peninsula.
And he's like, Oh, I remember this.
And he goes, I used to put my, my stereo in the back there on
that shelf and listen to my tapes.
And he was having a good a good reminisce about the
idiosyncrasies of the Tarago. Just wanted to say I've looked
up how much how ISIS go for. Here we go.
(26:10):
Well, let's take a little stab, shall we?
Let's take a little closest too.Yeah.
Well, so for like, we'll start with the highest commuter.
How much do you reckon the highest commuter is?
Well, that's the expensive one. That's the big bus one, yeah.
But how much do you reckon that is?
We'll start with that and then, then we'll, then we'll go down.
I think a high E commuter which is like a 14 seater I think.
Yeah, it can be. Yeah, highest.
Commuter 14 seater. I reckon you are 78.
(26:38):
Nowhere near. Not even close.
Like not even close Like they're85 + 100 and 112 for some like
the most expensive ones, 112 grand.
So you know, and these are theseare new so, so.
What? What?
What's a base? Hiace then.
Well, that's what I'm looking atnow.
(26:59):
So Hiace not a commuter so. The cheapest Hiace you can buy.
Yep. So here's a auto R.
So it's got a window on the side, no seats in the back.
How much do you think? Window side, no seats in the
back, plain Jane White. High Plain Jane White, 45 Keep
(27:20):
on going. 50. Five, keep on going. 60.
Five close 68,000, excluding government charges.
Imagine pulling up here, now you're driving, and now you all
got a new van. Yeah, a new van.
They do not think you've just spent 68 K on a van on that.
(27:40):
Yep. That's wild.
It's. Depressing.
That's depressing. That's unbelievable.
And that that'll lead us to our next to our topic which which
we'll which we'll we'll come to very shortly.
But yeah, that, that's pretty cooked.
But but anyway, so. So that's Europe, anything else
or that? That's it, That's it.
Yeah, it's the best. Sitting next to me, Chad updates
(28:01):
with you, my friend. Hello, just been working on the
Magna a little bit here and there.
Chad. The Magna, What have I been
doing? I get a big old clean the other
day just to see where all of itsimperfections and rough spots
are. There's quite a bit on the
outside, but it doesn't really bother me too much as long as
(28:25):
it, you know, some of the bits aren't roadworthy issues, but
we'll cross that bridge one and get to it.
Just gave the the interior the boot and just like all the
little, you know, cracks and whatnot in there around the boot
lid and all that. So just a really good wash.
I don't think it's ever had a wash in its life.
Like there's just crumb built upfor 30 plus years with just, you
(28:49):
know, being parked outside and no love at all.
And I'm not sure I have to talk to Tom, but I, I have to, I'm
trying to get an image of the guy that he bought this car from
because I can't work out how he's got in mud in every single
pace and orifice and paddle on the inside.
(29:11):
What I heard was that that that car was really well maintained
by the 1st owner the the neighbour, the old guy that
bought it new. Yeah, he did the 1st 20,000 KS
in it and it was really clean and that's why the the the the
guy that Tom bought it off. Bought.
Them so but and he and his daughter drove it for a while
and they looked after it but then it went to the hoarder
(29:33):
brother and the hoarder brother used to collect firewood in it
from. That makes sense, yeah.
Some sort of trails, you know, the boot carpet was even there
when when Tom got it, you know, because he had the boot full of
wood, I think. So it's been fanged through some
forest trails or something, and that's where all the muds come
from, I think. Yeah, I mean it honestly, the
(29:55):
outside and the inside looks like a four wheel drive.
It has the same like branch scratches and like, you know,
hitting logs on, you know, on the on the on the side sills and
all that. And yeah, it's just like
everything, everything it's everseen.
It hit Braille parking to the absolute Max by by that guy.
(30:16):
I'm, I'm imagining because yeah, the other person obviously took
care of it. But yeah, so I just gave it a
bit clean and I basically, you know, just trying to get an
inventory about what it needs. Looks pretty straight
underneath. Like there's no, there's no
issues. There's no leaks at all, which
is awesome you know stun bug roll.
(30:36):
OK, so you kind of expect it, but then again, like you know,
sometimes when the cars aren't when cars aren't driven, they
also the the seals start runningout and hardening up and stuff,
but it seems pretty good. So yeah just getting an
inventory. I got some head unit wiring for
it today, which unfortunately turned out to be the wrong kind.
(30:58):
So I've got the head unit turns on, but I've got no sound at
all, which is because there's, there's two types of plugs for
the head units. There's A2 plug and a single
plug. And I happened to air Pro, no
disrespect, but you recommended the wrong 1.
So I, yeah, I, I got the, the recommended one, which was 2
(31:19):
plugs. But my, I took the head unit
out. It was a single plug 1.
So we're just going to get a, another ISO wiring harness for
it and it should be fine. But yeah.
If I could head unit is it? Yeah, yeah, I just, it's just
what I had lying around, just anold Sony.
That's that'll because I couldn't unlock the the stock
(31:39):
head unit. So the original head unit, but
yeah, I just couldn't unlock it.I tried Googling for the card
and stuff, I couldn't find it. I don't have the book, so I
couldn't find that either. So I just thought, yeah, bugger,
I'll just put a aftermarket 1 and just, you know, nothing too
flash, just to get the music forthe drive and whatnot.
Drives the tarragon around a bunch.
(31:59):
That's it's good as always, no issues.
What else? Well, it's just cleaning cars
basically. Just yeah, just a lot of
cleaning over the last few weekends.
Yeah, that's pretty much it for me.
We're also joined by Territory himself.
Anthony, how you doing? Not too bad was how are you all
doing? Hello mate, sorry for the delay
(32:21):
in this instance was from the other one to to sleep and she
was being a little Pia the joy of kids joy of.
Kids, how? How are you going to make
contest with you? The territory is still falling
apart. Paint's still pretty terrible.
More, more bubbling has started engulfing the front bonnet now.
(32:41):
Yeah, and it needs paint back up.
Oh, it needs a it needs a closeddoor respray for sure.
What else? The headlining is again shot and
pretty much the the back end of it has fallen out, started
getting a a good squeak from thefront right hand suspensions and
my guess is that one of the shocks has gone there or very
(33:03):
close to it. So unfortunately, nothing good,
yeah. Nothing good.
It's all right. It's easy.
Easy fixes, Anthony, Easy fixes.Look, they they are easy fixes,
but the problem is the closed door respray is still not cheap.
You know, suspension wise that'sno big deal.
Headliner that's not a huge dealeither.
You know, I think I got a quote the headliner that was like 300
bucks. So I mean, that's that's not too
(33:26):
bad. And that was, you know, I think
I was going to basically supply was the fabric, which I think
looking at it myself, the fabricwas going to cost me like 150 to
180 bucks fabric alone. So in that instance, pay the
extra 100 bucks and let somebodyelse do it.
He's a little bit more experienced, I think as a no
brainer. Yeah, absolutely.
So I mean, that's that's as muchas I've got going on.
(33:48):
Drove the crown the other day for a bit of a change.
So, you know, did another 10 KS on that one.
Really, really probably just need to finish that, that cut
and cut and Polish on the roof and probably start listing that.
To be honest though, the the as much as we want to do the barrel
swap, it's more money, more money than sense and yeah, the
(34:11):
the bigger picture and there's too much going on to really
justify doing it. Although.
Old life. Yes, sadly, sadly, life and and
maturity, that's about it on my end of things for any sort of
update really. It's just status quo really.
Yeah, as we know how it all goes.
(34:34):
Absolutely updates with me now, ladies and gentlemen of the
audience. Be.
Prepared SO. Drum roll.
Drum roll, Alan's not here for this because he's in committee,
but he'll, he'll, he'll listen back to it.
So you guys are bad influences. I'm blaming each and everyone of
you on this show. You bought a Prius.
(34:55):
It it is a Toyota I thought I did buy.
So as you guys know, there was that V6 Camry that was like my,
you know, like my dad's that wasfor sale and I ended up
messaging the guy and 1st. Mistake right there Maddie.
You never message. Yes, yes, that's that.
(35:17):
That's already. I'm already in a bit of strife,
so message the guy. He gives me a call.
We chat about the car. It tells me it's, you know, it's
been in the family 30 plus years.
Good price. I only driven to church on
Sunday. I only driven to church on
Sunday. It was his dad's car.
His dad passed away a few years ago.
His mom couldn't. His mom couldn't let the car go
(35:40):
because she had sentimental value for the car.
Now she's recently passed away, so they're like, well, we can
get rid of the car now. And and then he's just, he spent
a bit of money on it, getting it, you know, driving again.
So he's like, come and look at it.
So I was like, yeah, no worries,I can come and have a look at
it. So last Tuesday I went and had a
look at it and I actually caughtup with David Prince in the
(36:04):
morning for, for breakfast. And David was was happy enough
to come and have another set of eyes on it on the, you know,
went to go have a look at it and.
Mainly because it was in and outer eastern suburb that you'd
never been to. I'd never been to Bayswater
before. Have you ever been to Bayswater?
Oh yeah, I used to drive trucks there.
Oh. Yeah, well, into Bayswater and
(36:26):
it was like, oh, it was an earlyTuesday morning and.
By the way, it's it's not near the Bay nor the water.
No, it isn't. Yeah.
It's a total lie. Yeah, it's it's a complete
fallacy though. It's it's kind of like S
meringue. Like there's no meringue.
It's just. It's not in the South.
It's and it's not in the South like it's just, it just makes no
sense to me. Yep, Yep.
So, so, yeah, so you guys were all at work, so I wasn't able to
(36:49):
instil, you know, your incredible eyes, but but David
Prince's eyes were, you know, were good nonetheless.
So, so we head out to a Bay where there was no water and
then we we pull it. We I pull in first and then
David's following me in his car and he's just laughing and
giggling in his car. I'm like, Oh my God, he was must
be on the phone to somebody. And he's just.
(37:09):
David, you know, he's a jolly guy.
He is a jolly guy. He is an absolute jolly guy.
And in any points. And he's like, is the guy's name
Jeff? And I'm like, yeah, he's like, I
know this guy. And I'm like, I'm like, well, of
course you do. Of course they have a Princess.
Like he knows everybody so. Wait, if you didn't know him.
Yeah, I'd be more worried if youdidn't know him.
(37:32):
So Jeff comes out and and and David's ready there and and.
Hold out your hand, Jeff. Hold out your hand.
You got yourself a quality mower.
No, And then they they buddy. How many years was it been since
you've seen him, David? Like 30 years.
No, you're probably 25 getting on for 30 and the, the I was
(37:53):
laughing because all I knew as Ipulled up, I knew it all fitted
into place because maybe we'd send the photos online and it
had a number plate frame from a dealership that I did used to do
work for. The dealership's still there.
It's got a different name now, but I I noticed the number plate
frame, so original number plate frames that.
Camberwell Toyota. Well, it was Harris.
(38:15):
Fria Harris. Fria, yes.
So I thought, oh, that's, that's, that's cool.
And we pulled up outside of the company name over the, over the,
the factory was Eco Mist. And there was a guy that had
worked there years in it good 25or 30 years ago, left and
started the company Eco Mist, which do a lot of air fresheners
(38:37):
and and antibacterial sprays andthings like that.
So all that sort of stuff. So, and his name is Jeff and
yeah, we I've always got on wellwith him at work and and I've
done a few jobs for him after hestarted sort of thing on his
vans and stuff. And then we sort of lost touch.
But but yeah, when I saw the Camp Harris free of plates and
(38:59):
then I saw an eco mist, I said, is his name Jeff?
Yeah, he's oh, he just took one look at me and said, what are
you doing here? Well, I'm I'm here with this
one, so. So it's so while they were while
they were catching up and reminiscing and and talking
about the good old days, I was inspecting the car and then it's
(39:22):
very original in it, David, Likeit's a very original like it's
nuts. Yeah, it's very, very clean.
Yeah, it's, I mean, it's, it's abit.
It needs it needs a good detail and a good Polish and a good
clean and a good vacuum and everything but but it's all
there. Like it's fun.
Part Matt, that's the Oh yeah, you know, that we all love just,
you know, the little, bring those little details back.
That's that's the pleasurable part.
(39:43):
Absolutely no, I don't. Think little details.
Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
Detailing the details. I don't think the backseat's
ever been sat in, no. It's the blue has still got a
sort of shiny Sheen to it. You know, the acres of blue.
A lot of Smurfs died to trim that.
Yeah, you were waiting for that,David.
So. Lovely Matthew.
(40:04):
So yeah, so look at the car and.Graphic equaliser.
Graphic equaliser. There we go.
There was the V6. It was the V6.
That same stereo originally camein the MR2 as well.
Aussie delivered. What's giving you?
A plate on that car. That's an E plate format on
there. Wait.
So it's 89. 89, yeah. Yeah, E be an early a low E like
(40:27):
an EAEBEC. I think it is EA something,
yeah. Because beautiful 15 inch alloys
with the fire studs to be 6 hours, Yeah.
They're. Probably one of my favourite
Toyota wheels. I think they're they're
beautiful. Great wheel.
Headlight covers and Bonnet projector.
Yeah, and like I was better protective factory mats, which
is which make you happy, Edward Bunting.
(40:48):
Yeah, we like the factory mat. She'll have been covered up.
They won't see daylight. It'll be mats on mats.
Yeah, I've already got, I've already got a second set of mats
to go. So which which I got for the
Spree princely sum of 0, which is nice, but that's another
story. So then, yeah, I open the boot,
the full tool kit there, it's got a, it's got a a tow bar
(41:11):
fitted. So I probably want to get that
off because it's, you know, probably don't.
I'm never going to use it. You just.
Unbolt the tongue bit though. Come on, just tow it.
Start towing. Oh, it's.
Easy. Enough.
It's going to be up on hoist very soon.
Just get the whole bar taken off.
Yeah. But can you just remove the
tonguey bit? Well, the, the tongue is not on
(41:31):
it. It's, it's actually, it's, I've
never seen one like it before. It comes, it comes out and then
around the bumper like it's a, it's not like like our, our old
one, our Camry had it had like aHeyman Reese 1.
So it was, yeah, it was quite hidden.
This is a Heyman. Reese yeah, they're quite subtle
and you can just remove the tongue.
Yeah, kind of. Handy if you want to Chuck a
trail on you just Chuck the tongue on and tow.
(41:52):
You don't have the. Whole.
Thing I. Wonder if it's the same with the
Crown. I mean, the Crown's got a tow
bar on it too, after all, Yeah. Yeah, I think it is similar to
the Crown's one, actually. Anthony, remember?
All right, interesting. So then I so, yeah, so I was
looking at the car, having a look, you know, through it.
(42:13):
It's, it's, it's very original, missing three of the four centre
caps, which are going to be a nominated Finder.
I've found a set of wheels in WA, but he won't ship.
I've, I've contacted a few people that have that have been
wrecking them and they've said yeah, good luck 3.
D Print them. That's all you need.
They're tiny little caps. There I know.
(42:34):
And you've got 1, so you can 3. D Yeah, I'm going to scan it
and. Do that.
And then just 3D print them at work.
They'll be, you know, they'll be3D plastic, but at least
they'll, they'll stay on there and they'll be fine.
So I will, I will probably do that with that.
What else with the car? So it's the bars.
(42:55):
The bars need a bit of love because old mate Braille parked
is, is, is becoming our favourite, favourite, you know,
favourite saying Braille parking.
He yeah. So like they're not terrible,
but like the car's quite straight.
Like it's, it's very original. It's going to need a bit of
David Prince on the on the on the handbrake lever and it'll be
needed a bit of David Prince on the on the rear, you know, rear
(43:18):
rub strip. But apart from that, it's, it's
a very original car. So then with the startup battery
was dead because he had not started the car in about six
weeks as it had just sat there. But after that we got it jumped
and it, it was a little bit hesitant and then it then it
(43:39):
started and it sounded like AV 8because it's got a massive
exhaust leak. So the, and apparently it's
quite common in these that the flex flexi joint fail.
So like when the engine mounts wear out, you know, the, the
engine kind of drops a bit and they, they kind of put a bit
more pressure on the flexi mounts and then they then they
then they kind of wear out. So, so that's that it's got a,
(44:00):
it's got a rocket cover gasket leak on both, on both sides,
which is, which was reminiscent of my experiences seeing steam,
you know, come at the size of the engine when the car was
warming up because the, because it'd be the old, the dropped oil
would be, would be burning off the off the exhaust.
And I'm after about 5 minutes and you're closing you, you just
close your vents and you know, you go after about 5 minutes.
(44:22):
So, so that so that's that'll need to get done.
It needs a windshield. It's got it's got a crack
that'll that'll get sorted some engine mounts as well.
And I think it should be pretty like it should be pretty good.
So took it for a test drive drive's OK.
It's not as I didn't really wantto.
I didn't thrush it or anything, but like, I was just just
(44:44):
putting it around. But it, it took me back.
Like the smell of the car took me back.
It took me back to my truck. It, it smelled exactly like our
smell. It was yeah.
You know, when you can relate smells with, I mean, it's
certain things. It's just it that it just, it
took me back to being, being a kid, you know, getting dropped
off in primary school and it, you know, picking up Anthony
Falk, Mr Turbo Terry, you know, numerous times and numerous
(45:06):
times. And then my dad, you know,
slamming on the brakes and locking up because I had no ABS.
And it, it, it brought, it brought back so many memories.
You know, it just, I couldn't get the smile off my face.
Just just driving it around the block.
So then we went back and, you know, we originally, well, he
originally wanted 7 grand for it.
And I'm like, there's no way he's 7 grand for this.
(45:28):
And we, we came to a very, very good number.
And I think the David Prince taxhelped a bit a bit there.
So, so that was, that was quite kind of a good thing to have.
So, yeah, came to a good price and then said, yeah, OK, let's
do it. So then went to.
But then David was like, we'll take it to my mechanic first
(45:48):
game to do the exhaust. And because it's over that side
of town, I'm like, yeah, it's fine.
So when I pick it up, we'll go do that.
We got to pick it up, start the car driving fine for the first,
you know, 20 minutes of the trip.
Would you say David? Yeah, yeah.
And we'll get to a set of lights.
That was like putting the thumbsup.
And I'm like, yeah, thumbs up. Everything's going good.
You know, the car was coming back alive because the battery
was flying, you know, everything.
Like some of the things, some ofthe functions were, you know,
(46:08):
waking up and, and the radio wasworking, yet the electric
antenna was working. It was like, oh, this is great.
Next set of lights come to a stop and the car just dies
completely dies. And I was like, oh, no, this is
not good. And in all the power it just was
like like it just felt like the the you know, the Millennium
Falcon was just powering down. It's just like all everything
(46:30):
dimmed in and it just, it just died and the battery was.
The Millennium Camry lost power. The Millennium Camry lost
complete everything. So so you.
Know, I think for full effect, Matthew, you need to advise
people that you were heading West on Burwood Highway and this
was at the traffic lights at Spring Vale Rd.
Yeah, so quite. Begin to 2nd 5 on a on a on a
(46:52):
Thursday afternoon. Big intersection.
Yeah, not ideal. Not ideal for it to stop there
and then. You know, I love the guy in a
full drive. It was, was it a Triton?
I can't remember what it was. You know it was.
I was too busy just trying. Yeah, I think it was Triton, but
it was more importantly, it was one of those traffic control Ute
so it had yellow flashing lightson the top, so just turned those
(47:13):
on. And then we pushed the car
backwards and then into the turning lane and then, you know,
proceeded to move my, you know, my, my car.
Well, David. David moved my car and then I
was directing trafficking peoplenot hitting me because the
because the hazard lights weren't working.
Is it because the car completely, you know, completely
lost all power? So that so that wasn't fun.
(47:37):
And then people were yelling at me on the side of the road.
Put your houses on. I'm like, that don't work.
Nothing's working. I've got no power.
And then I think I had a few people say you can't park there.
And so, so. So thank you, Scotty.
That. That's Scotty.
Yeah. You triggered me earlier,
Scotty. I was like, now I'm one of those
people, but it doesn't, it bothers my how how silly people
(48:00):
are because like I'm waving people and saying go around and
everyone's going around and thisone person just comes up and
waits behind me and with the indicator on it, I'm like, I'm
like, there was still daylight. I'm like, Hey, you got to go
around. And she's just, she's just
sitting there looking, looking at me and just already waiting
for the lights to turn green andI'm sitting behind the car like,
what is wrong with you? So when she finally realised I
(48:20):
was just like, what the hell? So, so now it's getting, now
it's starting to get dark and this Mitsubishi Evo drives past
me and I could smell the, the lovely E85 from, from the, from
the rear. And I'm like, oh, that's a nice
car. He drives off and 5 minutes
later he comes back. He's like, do you need a hand?
I'm like, oh, you're a legend. Like, yeah, have you got to have
you got to, you got to jump back?
He's like, absolutely. So we jumped the car and bang,
(48:41):
it was like, it was like nothingever happened.
It was. It ran perfectly all the way to
the to David's mechanical shop where the they do exhaust drove
it straight in and yeah, happy days.
That's bizarre. So I think it's got an
immobiliser. Sure it has.
I think it's got an old school immobiliser.
Our Camry had on it from I askeddad about it actually, and he's
(49:02):
like, it had an immobiliser on on it, but he, it never worked.
So he, he never used it. But the, the, it wouldn't
surprise me because being the, you know, being the V6, they
probably would have said, oh, you know, it's a bit more
expensive. We'll we'll have put a, you
know, put a mobilizer in it. And that's why I just completely
cut. Everything Domingo would have
upsell upselled that I think at the time.
Absolutely upsold it. So drove it there and yeah,
(49:25):
look, it, it drove it, it drove really like, really well.
It, it took me back. I mean, it, it's, it didn't feel
as quick as, as I remember them. But then again, I've driven a
lot of faster cars since then. You know, that's probably, you
know, but for a piece of nostalgia and for a piece of,
you know, like it, it made me happy driving it.
I was like, yeah, this is, this is good.
(49:45):
Despite the fact that it completely died and probably the
worst possible moment, but thankyou to Mitsubishi Evo guy you
you followed me all the way to the to the to the mechanics too
to make sure I got there cyclingso.
Yeah, you do. Nice of him.
Yeah, so, so Evo guys don't listen to Initial D because the
EVO guys were bad guys in Initial D.
(50:06):
They're actually they're actually really, really good
guys. So so yeah, thank, thank you, Mr
EVO Guy. I didn't I didn't quite get your
name, but you know, the thanks are very, very important.
So thank you for for your help. And yeah.
So it's still there waiting for a call to to see what, you know,
what the next step is with that car.
And then Chad and I are going tohead over and pick it up and
(50:26):
exciting times ahead, exciting times ahead.
So, yeah, very excited to to getbehind the wheel of a of a nice
original Camry and look and likethe steering or like, like
everything about it, like the leather, we felt, still felt
good. Like it felt like a really low,
low key example, which it which it is.
So, yeah, just a couple of things, but and I think it'll, I
think it might be, it might, it might be good for a, you know, a
(50:49):
bit of a road trip and, and maybe a cars and coffee here and
there and, and, and we'll see. Classic Japan.
Classic Japan. Yes, if they, you know, if I'm
still not in the in the shits with them after what they did to
me so dirty about it, I'm still very dirty about it.
But anyway, moving on to tonight's topic, gentlemen.
So actually, before we do so, David Prince again, thank you
(51:12):
for coming out and looking at the car with me.
Much appreciated. Thank you to Jim, who who gave
his nod of approval on the on the vehicle.
And yeah, so really excited to get to get behind the wheel of
that again and really excited toshow you guys the how original
this this camera is because it'sbecause it is very original.
(51:33):
So yeah, anyway, moving on gentlemen, to tonight's topic is
what happened to sports cars? Where are they?
Why aren't companies making themanymore?
And I, and I think, I think we've got a fair idea as to why
they're not making them anymore because it's probably there's
not enough sales in them. But where have they all gone?
Because I remember in the, in the 90s and early 2000s, you
could, every company had a sports guy, didn't they Like,
(51:55):
and even if they weren't a proper sports guy, like you
could get like a Celica with a Camry engine, But then you could
also get the GT4 version of that, which was like the, you
know, the, the big daddy, you know, what happened to sports
cars? Like every, every company was,
was doing, was doing some sort of a sports car, even Mercedes.
But I mean, the SL is not reallya sports car, but it's super
light leaked. This is what it's supposed to
(52:16):
stand for, even though it weighs4 million tonnes, You know, it
was supposed to be their sports car, like every, you know, and
then they came out with the SLK.But like even then they were
doing it like every company had had some sort of, you know, hot
little coupe or, or sports car or, you know, in something
interesting in their line up. And now I guess markets are
changing. But at what point do you think
(52:38):
companies said no, no more? And you know, the end of the
sport. And it's kind of like the
inverted commas sports car. When when you think it's left to
fail and then do you think it it's it's chance of coming back
a a high or low? 3 letters SUV.
That's yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. And then I guess the other part
(52:58):
of things these days is now you've got EV and EV related
things. So I mean, you used to think
sports car and think quick acceleration, yet these days you
can just buy a appliance. And you know, I was in the
Mustang marquee for a loan car while the Mrs Carr was getting
serviced and that was 3.8 seconds to 100.
(53:19):
You know, so it's like, well, why do you need a sports car
when you can just buy a refrigerator and put put down a
new go? What?
I take from that is that that's now Forda, Forda getting rid of
their Mackey's. They're actually registering
them and giving them out of service loan cars because yeah.
Yeah, well, do do do you guys know the story about why the
marquee was actually registered as a Mustang?
(53:42):
Yeah, carbon credits. Yeah, exactly.
That's the carbon credits. So they yeah, exactly that.
So when they actually wanted to release the V8 Mustang, they
basically came back and said emission wise you guys need to,
if you guys make a Mustang electric, that'll then offset
your V8 offset so we can make itwork then in that instance.
(54:04):
So that's the whole reason why the marquee exists.
That's just because of the nameplate, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, just for the nameplate.
That's just the only reason why it exists.
Don't get me wrong, Like I wouldmuch rather than the marquee
over of Tesla or anything else like that.
Build quality was good, you know, it was comfortable.
It had all the bells and whistles that you needed for it.
Still wouldn't buy it, but it meant if I was given it, I
(54:24):
wouldn't complain. But I mean, I think that still
comes back to the whole point ofwhere sports cars go on.
Sports cars used to be the quickthings that get around, and
these days, you know, most cars are, you know, some level of
stupid quick. Yeah yeah and and you, you spot
on everything like most cars, you know, like anything really
like I have LH6GT hybrid is like380 kilowatts or something,
(54:47):
something stupid and I'm like that's nuts.
You heard like, like, you know, your big V eights and stuff when
we're never getting anything close to that.
And now and now, yeah, this is ayeah 2 little hybrid thing with,
you know, 1,000,000 horsepower and the one you can.
Get you can get yourself the theBYD shark that's less than 5
seconds to 100 out of a pickup. Get out of A22 plus tonne
(55:08):
vehicle which is just insane. So what?
What? Sports cars, can you still buy?
MX5. Yes, of course.
BRZA. Z 86, Yeah.
Yeah, Toyota Supra. Supra.
Yeah. BMW Z4.
Four. Yeah.
Any any any BMW competitions. Yeah, Mustang.
You can still buy a Mustang. Mustang still be nice I guess.
(55:31):
C Class Coupe. Yeah.
Still buy. Still buy SLKS, can't you I
think. Can you buy this?
I don't. I don't, I don't think, I don't
think they do it. So there's anything anymore?
They're gone. I mean, they've got the C and
the E Class coupe, yeah. Yeah, internal sports, was it
3373400 whatever 400? Yeah, the the.
(55:54):
The the Datto, The Nissan things.
The. Datto.
Datto. But so it has to be a 2 door we
we mentioned all these two door cars there's.
BWN 4. Well, I mean what?
Well, let's what constitutes a sports car?
It's it's usually been like a like a 2, like a 2 door. 2 door
coupe patchy patchy. Convertible.
(56:17):
Convertibles. Yeah, convertible.
Yeah. Real, you know, real.
Like fun to drive. Predominantly rear wheel drive.
You know the only reason why I want to say.
That's that's what they were traditionally.
You're doing it like I I don't. Yeah, now not so much then.
I was, I was just about to say now, now not so much because I
mean, you can Chuck in your Rs sixes and things like that and
(56:40):
your waggons and whatever else. I mean, yeah, it's not a yeah,
what's the word? That's a more conventional
sports car. I mean, that's what I was going
to say. It's not your conventional
sports car. But I mean, where do you draw
the line? Well.
It's a car, car, do sporty things.
Yeah. I think that's, and a big part
of us not having, you know, a lot of coups on the market is
(57:02):
because there's a car that can do many things at once, you
know, wear a lot of different hats.
And I think, yeah, it's cheaper for companies to make an RS6 but
also just make a A6, you know, waggon base model and then put
the, you know, sort of a twin turbo V6 or V8 or whatever it is
(57:22):
and and then just have the sports model.
Yeah my dad always used to say why pay more for a 2 door car
when you can hit buy a car for 4doors for less.
You'd. Otherwise, man, he's.
He's dads. They're very, they're just so
practical, you know? Pragmatic men.
Pragmatic. Men never understood my dad was
(57:42):
the same. Why would I pay 2 grand out of
ass over my head? You know, like.
Just never could never understand it.
So, OK, so I would have said I Idraw the line there like, you
know, predominantly as as the sports cars, they're like, you
know, a seat city type R and A and hot hatches.
Hot hatches are their own thing. But a sports car, we're kind of
(58:04):
like, you know, a sports car andyou know, your S 2000s, your,
your, your, your missing S chassis.
RX sevens. RX sevens, you know.
So we are talking about two doorcoupes.
That's essentially that's what it was down to, yeah.
Yeah, I really think, I mean theone that really stands out, not
just because I saw one that was talking about 1:00 earlier at
(58:26):
highball, but the MX5 is really, really it, isn't it?
Like, I mean it's. In a traditional sense, I agree.
The traditional sense, yeah, forall its limitations, but
interestingly, not, not not, youknow, zero to 100 KS in 3.4
seconds, right? It's.
Not and that's. The beauty of them, you know.
It's not a very. And, and it's the way, the total
package and the way they drive and the way they make you make
(58:48):
you feel all those things. It's not just about out and out
performance, I don't think. No, it's not.
It is not. I I agree now.
Scott has been remarkably quiet on this topic.
Scott, I'm just waiting for him to come out with.
It's not, it's not well, where'sAdrian you need?
(59:08):
But it's not a sports car. Yeah, sports car I feel needs to
handle as well needs to be fun. Yeah, creepy.
That's why I put, you know, likethe new 8 Sixers and that's a
sports car. It is a sports car, yeah.
BRZ sports car, yeah, MX5 sportscar.
I'm trying to think what's even out there.
(59:29):
So there's still some of the kind of, I guess, reasonably
priced sports cars. Would you classify a a Yaris GR
as a sports car? Yes.
No, I but, but I don't because it's a hot hatch.
Yeah. Because that's that's like.
A. Sporty hot hatch.
It's a sport, it's a sports hatch.
(59:51):
It's a, it's a hot hatch. Like it's like the whole idea of
a sports car tradition with, youknow, long bonnet, 2 door, you
know, kind of silhouette. That was more.
Like roadstery? Yeah.
But it doesn't have to. It doesn't have to be a
roadster. Like yeah, it could be a hard.
A hard top? Yeah, hard top coat.
Probably as hot hatches as genreof sports car maybe.
(01:00:13):
Well MG have just released the MG Cyber Star.
Yep. That electric, you know, bloody
gold, not gullwing, but kind of like Lamborghini door thing,
scissor door thing. You know, that's and that's in
all lessons. I mean, it's a 2 door sports car
with a with a electric engine. Would you consider that a sports
(01:00:34):
car like in terms of what that is?
It's definitely muddying the waters.
It's definitely muddying the waters between.
Sporty fridge. That's yeah, yeah, exactly.
Sporty fridge. You can have an electric, I
reckon you can have an electric car that is a sports car.
I'm I'm fine with that. Yeah, I'd agree with you,
Scotty. I'm.
With you. But not an SUV.
(01:00:58):
Well, it but this is like a traditional sports car.
It's it's a, it's a convertible 2 doors.
It needs to have two doors, $2.00 coupe.
If it's if it's swoopy looking and sexy and you know, whatever
and handles and everything, you can be electric.
That doesn't mean. Yeah, if it's actually made to
kind of handle and be fun and not just like an A to B SUV
style thing, then yeah, sports cars.
(01:01:21):
Sports cars are made to be sporty and fun and SU VS not
made to be sporty and fun. I don't know, I I could argue.
That with really fast. With one specific one of a track
orc. All right, what about the REMAC?
The REMAC as well, yeah, I mean, there's this.
Cork is just a a mental 4 wheel drive, yeah.
(01:01:42):
It's it's cool. I wouldn't consider an SUV.
It's just it's in its own own category, I think.
Now, now I don't mind if they'renot, if they're not rear wheel
drive like I don't mind like a, like a sports scoop of the front
wheel drive, like Salika's with front wheel drives for years.
You know, your, your preludes, your, your, your tags.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. A tag you know and I I the
(01:02:04):
service says. You know, even the Toyota, the
was it the AE1O ones? I think the Levis.
Levis, yeah, that front wheel drives, but that were two door
and everything. They were sporty.
That definitely sports cars. Yeah, they handle well.
They do super strut suspension, you know, they, they'd, I'd, I'd
(01:02:25):
much, much agree with you. So all right, so, so we've,
we've established what sports cars are in the, in the grand
scheme of things, in the, the most traditional version of that
that's still on sale is, is the MX5 like, and I think that's,
that's the reason why they, it still sells relatively.
OK. Where did they all go?
And David said 3 letters SUV. But do we think the SUV, like
(01:02:46):
the SUV killed off the, the, thesedan, but do you reckon it
killed off the, the sports car as well?
Like like surely couldn't have killed off all the time.
We just reeled off all these. No, so I don't, I don't think
you can say they're all gone. They're not all gone, but
people. They're like 1. 10 that's.
Fine that they used to be. Like there's there's.
(01:03:07):
Like are they just not selling as many of them?
Well, we we we named what 5 likethat are still on sale today.
Yeah, yeah, like 5 or 6. There's, you know, the ones we
named and then there's the ones we named that are still on sale.
Yeah, yeah. So but like, you know, what I
was trying to say is all the other all these other companies
had them for years like they hadevery company had a inverter
(01:03:28):
commas, a sports car, you know, a 2 door coupe thing.
And now it's just like a select few like the Z4, your Mustang
MX5, your 86 BRZ supra, that's pretty much it.
Like there's, you know, I don't do a TT anymore.
Like, you know that that doesn'texist.
You know, there's so there's it makes you, it makes you beg the
(01:03:50):
question like, why aren't companies, you know, doing them
anymore? Like they they usually don't OK.
And, and company car companies know that they're not big
sellers, OK, because they're, they're an impractical car.
And that's understandable. Like, you know, you can't fit
the whole family in there, but you do it as like a Halo
experiment to get people to comesee your brand because oh, they
can't, you know that that car's cool.
(01:04:10):
Like when, when people think of Ford, like they think of
Mustang, you know, as a, you know, the, the pedigree that,
that the race history, you know, behind that.
What I that's what I think of Ford.
I don't think of Buddy Ranger, but you know, it's kind of, it's
kind of heading that way. Yeah, probably that's what you
would name now when you think ofFord.
Yeah. Well, is that what MG is doing
then with the cyber stuff? Like I think so we think they're
(01:04:32):
doing the the Halo experiment, which is like this exists as a
this company exists. Obviously they know what's on
sale and then they're like, whatabout this?
And you know, it's a throwback to sports cars, I guess, right.
Yeah, because they don't do them.
They'd normally they'd I'm a newMG, not not on MG obviously, but
(01:04:52):
they'd yeah, they're obviously putting their toes in the water
in a way, but there's not that many toes in that water anyway.
No, I hear what you're saying. I was just going to say I'm just
looking at how many current top sports cars are at it's over 20.
OK. Right 911 Toyota.
What are they? So you've got a 911.
(01:05:15):
Twos. The GR Supra, Toyota GR86, Ford
Mustang, Miata, Porsche Boxster,Z4F Type Jag, Nissan, Subaru
BRZ. They put it in as a sports car.
Yeah. The LP.
Yeah. BMW M4 Corvettes, Lexus Lotus,
(01:05:36):
Amira. Lexus.
What Lexus? LC.
LCA. Sports car.
Oh yeah. There's the sports car.
Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, they've got Mazda Miata.
Is the Porsche 718 box star the Z4 Corvette Acura NSX Acura?
Can you still buy? Acura, US.
Sorry. In the US.
(01:05:57):
Come by. But you know, you can get it in
the US, but it's pretty much a civic type R It's that's, it's,
it's exactly what it is. This will be worldwide, so M2MG,
GT, Supra, Mustang, it's just toname a few.
And then they, they also go on the, the different types of
sports cars. And they, they, they, as we
(01:06:18):
touched upon, there's your hot hatches, your grand tours, you
know, there's various, Yeah, convertibles, all sorts of cars
that could be classified as sports cars.
Yeah, can see what you've done there Rob.
Like I I was more thinking like affordable cars, but again, like
9 elevens and stuff. Yeah.
(01:06:40):
I mean, if we're going to. 9/11 is the next level aren't?
They yeah, they are OK. I I guess it depends on the
definition of affordable. I mean, if you're
multibillionaire, then everything's.
Affordable but like. If you average average show at
this stage, nothing is. I.
Reckon even MX fives are expensive.
They are, yeah. How much?
How much is the new MX5 now? The 30.
(01:07:01):
The 35th anniversary was $61,000.
Wow, I. Believe that, but that's a
special one. But can you get a normal one
starting with a four? Just going just going through
car sales. SO25MX5 GTG 200 is 60.
Yeah, OK. Yeah, see, I thought they'd be
in the what's the base? What's the base base MX5 now?
(01:07:23):
Do they still do the 1500 MX 5? Like I don't know if they are I.
Think, oh, did they drop that? I think they want to drop.
That dropped it, I think, yeah. So what's a base base now?
Is it? Is it?
Is it 50 something? Yeah, 50s, I think the cheapest
I've found so far, that's 55. But I mean, they just started
scrolling through hoops and convertibles to try and get some
ideas to add to the pool, Yeah. That's not much car for that
(01:07:46):
kind of price. That's why people don't see it
as Scott. Scott's got idea.
Scott. That's a lot of car for that
price and Mini Moke is not much car for the price so.
That bill. Very special.
The thing that's changed, the thing that changed is people.
People have changed. OK, it it elaborates Scotty.
(01:08:07):
So what people want now, they want electronics inside their
car. They want it to be comfortable.
They just want to pretty much get from A to B.
There's not that many people outthere that are into cars anymore
as much as it used to be, because there's so many options
out there. You've got your generations that
(01:08:33):
you're coming through now. There's short attention spans,
everything that they've got. Everything has to be ordered.
You know, and all the new cars will do everything that you want
it to do, which is what they want.
Yeah. You know, it's got everything
(01:08:54):
there. They want to be able to move,
carry things, take things to where they want to go with all
their other activities that they're doing.
All their activities, what are they doing these people?
What? Are they all?
Doing by doing life, cycling, doing.
They're doing more than one. Cycling.
Dogging. What do they do?
(01:09:14):
Dogging. Dog walking.
Glad to be cleared that up. No, I I'm I'm with you Scotty.
I, I think, I think people are looking for cars that they can
they that they can do their inverter commas lifestyle with.
Why hatchbacks became so popular?
(01:09:35):
But yeah, but but then again, like.
Like it fits so much in them andthey're a good size.
They're carrying things these people aren't.
They were busy bodding, carryingthings around.
Well, if you think about it, thehot hatch killed the sports car,
didn't it really, you know, Likeit's it, it, it killed, it
killed all, you know, MGS and all that it, you know, they when
the hot hatch came along, you know, your GT is and all that
(01:09:56):
they, you know, kind of made them irrelevant because you can
have as much more. It's the same much amount of
fun, if not more, but you know, carrying your mates in the car
and carrying your a lot of, a lot of timber or firewood in the
case of Ted's car. But, you know, sedan.
Sedan, but then, but then when SUV's came along, you know, it's
(01:10:16):
like, oh, I can, I've got my high driving position and I can
put my kids in the car without bending over and hurting my
back. You know it's it's.
Sorry. Matthew, that's outrageous
impression. I wasn't being.
Represent that. Statement Prince, for the
record, is not a boomer, even though he technically is by age.
(01:10:41):
You just. He does not exhibit Boomer
behaviour. He.
Doesn't it's nicer than anyone said to me today.
He he drove a Ford Laser the other day, so that that proves
that he's definitely not a. Boomer Ford laser the amazing I
did follow a really interesting car talking to the point get
back to the point you were talking about performance blue
(01:11:01):
Kona M the N. Oh yeah.
The full on Hyundai inexperiencenot N line which yeah I think
like like the M packs you can get at the the AMG packs you can
get with Benz and and and BMW. This was the full on full
stonking performance. Blue SAP Crackle pop Kona in and
(01:11:24):
I. Thought, is that a sports car?
Well, it's. I think it's a hot hatch.
Are you? Certainly.
Well, it's an SUV. It's a hot SUV.
It's OR. D but it's not a sports car.
No, no, no. But I I was interesting from
what you were just saying about, you know, the SUV side of
things. It was in there aren't many
(01:11:45):
other. Oh well, AM and G do do a hot.
GLA. GLA&B and CI think, don't they?
Yeah, they do. But but they're they're
ridiculous. Different market again.
I mean, I've I've hats off to myown day.
I think I did a good job. I think I'm going to agree with
you there because the Kerner in like when they, when they tested
it, it was only like around mosttracks, only a second or so
slower than than an I-30 N that it's based on, you know, and
(01:12:08):
it's got a high set of gravity. It's, you know, it's, it
shouldn't be as good as it is, but they've done a remarkable
job and hats off to them. Like it's, it's, it's really
good. Yeah, It's a good, it's a
generally a good car. But, but see, for me, it just
that kind of reminds me of like a like a Forester XT.
It's it's just, it just feels like a waggon.
It feels like a little bit higher.
You know, it's not, it's, it's acrossover.
It's not a full SUV, you know, like A and and I think that's
(01:12:31):
kind of where that car kind of gets the yeah, I get, I get
that. But yeah, I think I'm with you
guys. I think you're all making valid
points about you know that they do exist.
Yes, they are are very expensive, yes, but and that's
why I think when the 86 and BRZ first came out in what
20/12/2013 around around there. 2012, yeah.
(01:12:53):
It was such a game changer for the enthusiast.
Like, you know, this was an early 30s, early $30,000 car,
you know, drive away. There was a sports car, you
know, and, and no one had done that in forever, you know, and.
Praised the handling of it too. They did even on Prius tyres
because they're like, I just want to throw around corners and
get at the back end to slide around.
And, you know, how good is that? And, you know, today they're
(01:13:16):
this. I see how, like, when you go out
tonight, I guarantee you'll see at least one of those first Gen
80 Sixers will be up there. Oh yeah.
They're everywhere. Everywhere.
Genuinely everywhere. And then but the new.
Ones. But the new ones, they don't,
they don't really they haven't sold as much because the, the, I
mean, the price points jumped astronomically high in terms of,
(01:13:39):
in terms of what that is. And and your entry level sports
car, you know, MX5 is still too expensive for, for that.
Like we were looking at some of that news in the 40s in the
high. Because you can get us like 45,
yeah. So.
Why did the price jump so high? What's what's in these newer
ones compared to the ones when they first came out?
Nothing. I think it's just the cost of
(01:14:02):
making the car now, yeah, is significantly higher.
Also to like you gotta remember if if you're working out the the
price of like an original MX5 like like how much how much were
the NA's brand new at like you? 31 grand.
That's 31 grand back in 1989. So that's. 60 grand now. 60
grand now, yeah. More or less.
(01:14:23):
So in other words, it's cheaper than it's ever been or it's or
it's been the same in terms of price.
Yeah. So in terms of, you know, value
and, and, and cost. But yeah, I don't know.
I I still think, you know, car should car company should have a
have like a Halo sports car, even if it's not like
(01:14:43):
affordable, like something for, you know, for you to aspire to,
to, to bring, you know, cachet to the brand, to bring, you
know, people into the showrooms to say, oh, that, you know, oh,
I've got a, I've got a, you know, Toyota Taraga, but have
you seen the Supra? Like how cool is that?
Like, yeah, it's a Toyota, you know?
Well, did you see? Well, you couldn't see much of
(01:15:03):
it because it was kind of, you know, that camouflage.
Yeah, Goodwood. At Goodwood, the Toyota.
I did. Toyota GT is all they're calling
it at the moment. But and then they had the race
car, the GT3 version of it, behind.
They did. But that's some good news there.
The funny thing is, like the commissars, like sitting there
(01:15:26):
going. I wonder what's in it by the
sound of it. It's like man, it's AV 8
obviously. It sounds like a complete V8.
I think no one expects V eights to be in cars anymore.
They're just like surprised whenthey're when they exist.
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
Some good news still coming fromToyota.
Well, Toyota's made that commitment to no more boring
(01:15:47):
cars as long as Accio Toyota's alive essentially, you know,
full, full credit to him. You know, that's that's a good
thing. And I, and I like how, you know,
affordable sports cars are, you know, how he he kind of brought
them back for, for for a little bit.
But but like, when even like performance cars, like sporty
ish cars, like they're, you know, of the, of the base
(01:16:07):
models, they're like a goal far is close to 80 grand.
Like that's, that's ridiculous money for a golf, you know what
I mean? Like that's just it's, it's
insanity. But that's, you know, that's
just how it is in in the currentmarket.
You know, we Chad just did the inflation calculator from from
1989 to to current days. Yeah, what does?
What does that do? Well, how much was the Chad?
(01:16:28):
So 30,000 and 1989 is $77,000 today.
So an MX5NA cheaper? Than a super bench.
Yeah, what's that, 30,000 more than 30,000 cheaper?
I will sell mine for 70. It is available.
It is available to anyone that will give me 70.
(01:16:52):
Like you'll you'll even do them a good deal and do 60.
I'd consider it, yeah. He called his own handshake.
Yeah. Give me 24 hours, I'll consider
that 60. Let me put, Let me point.
Seconds to I'll consider it. I'll get my people to speak to
your people and we'll and we'll yeah, yeah, we'll figure that
(01:17:14):
out. Now, last question before we get
to the quiz. Do you think car companies
should have a Halo sports car, or do you think that it's just
at this point in time with automation and everything is
there's really no point of them investing?
Yeah, I don't think there's any point in investing.
It's great with the ones that dohave it, but I don't see all the
(01:17:39):
brands in China having their ownHalo sports car version coming
through because there's just, there's so many.
I see Byds and the whatever all the other ones are, there's so
many now, Cherry and everything like that.
I think as long as some of the main brands stick around, I
(01:18:02):
would like it if they kept something, just something
interesting to draw you in, to draw you into car shows.
You know, why have these automotive car shows when they
showing you an SUV? Yeah, it's just an automotive
SUV show. Engineers, like engineers, don't
(01:18:26):
want to keep making SUVs. Deep down, I don't think so.
You think they're bored of it? Oh, A. 100% if you if you're
there, you're there because you probably like cars in some way.
I mean, look what happens when you let engineers design
something on their own without being pressured.
They come up with some amazing things.
(01:18:48):
There's there's a car journalistcurrently out there that David
and I know of and we were discussing the other day, the
video reviews that that he does.It was just like there's just
zero interest in every single one of them.
It's like there's a Kia something and a Hindu or
something and a BYD something and a Jac something and a cherry
(01:19:09):
something and it's just dull on dull on dull on dull.
Like I just, I just have no in at all to any of them and I'm
sure one day I'll probably be buying and selling some of
those. Things it's gonna happen to,
but. But yeah, but it's just like.
Have you noticed how boring the interiors have become too?
Because they've got that, they have one big screen in the
(01:19:32):
middle. Screen, maybe another.
Just nothing. Yeah.
There's just, there's nothing tothem.
And there's nothing really to compare like what are you?
What are you comparing on the screen's got another inch or the
the? Boot.
Buttons and the foot goes one second quicker than the other
one. Like what are you?
What are you actually sort of contrasting with?
(01:19:53):
Them Oh, look, I quite a lot. I've, you know, sat in the Geely
and the the shark. They're all quite nice inside, I
thought. Yeah, I actually, I'm with you,
Rob. I think the, I think the BYD
stuff, they're they're actually trying.
The interiors of Byds are reallycool.
Like, you know, they're putting cool colours and yeah, they're a
bit weird, but at least they're not your standard.
Yeah, you know everything else that's.
(01:20:15):
Just a standard bridge. Anodized anodized aluminium
pieces and stuff like that you don't see.
Guitar strings of anodized. Guitar, guitar strings on.
Yeah, you're right. Yeah, Like, like, no, but no,
but but, you know, genuinely, they're the only ones that are
doing anything interesting. Yeah, yeah.
As bad as bad as that sounds, I'm I'm I'm all aboard BYDI
think, I think. Hats off to him.
(01:20:35):
That's that's good. I'm upset, yeah, but like, I'm
with you, I I get what you're saying.
Too soon. Like I I have a lot of boring.
I bought a wheels, you know, magazine in a very long time
because on the, on the front pages, there's just like the new
SUV's, you know, like, and they're they're they're, you
know, pinning SUV's and you're like, I don't want to read that.
Like, who wants to read that? Like, I'm not.
Yeah, I, I see. I want to know who are, who are
(01:20:57):
the people that want to read that?
Bring them on. What have they got to talk about
that they like about these things?
They're just tech tech nerds, like when I went to that EV
show. Yeah.
Did you know that? No, not recently, but two years
ago while my work went, you know, we a few of us went from
work two years ago. Yeah, not maybe.
(01:21:18):
It was last year even. Anyway, it was just retirees,
dare I say it, boomers with their spreadsheets wandering
around, you know, with boomer money, looking at Zhong Zhangs
and Wing Wangs. And they're all they're all just
nerding out on the the range andthe bullshit.
And I just was like I said to you, my colleague, look at the
(01:21:39):
crowd here. Look at these people.
You know, these these are just crawled out from whatever
Vermont South Garrard they cabinet and they're looking all
this getting excited over this bullshit.
And I was like, this is not a motor.
Show this is just. David saw you and quickly ducked
around the corner. No, no, he favoured more credit
(01:22:03):
than that he. More sold.
Than any of them. So yeah, just, you know.
Well, you essentially said what the what's called the the Tesla
car club of of Victoria is that that like I when I saw them.
Is there a Tesla car club? They're absolutely.
(01:22:24):
Yeah, there is. What are they doing?
It's compared. I've got 800 KS out of mine on a
downhill. Who we put on the light show
when we parked together. The light show.
Off. If you need a light show to make
yourself remotely interesting, that in that just tells it all
of those. Windows it's like.
Someone who's incredibly unattractive in every.
(01:22:46):
Way, be it their looks or their.Personality.
It's like them wearing a, you know, a sparkly outfit, you
know? No, you're not.
Yeah, darling, a sparkly outfit. The way they were, they were
talking the the I I walked past,I walked past.
This is when I was at the EV shop UACO and is when I was
(01:23:06):
chatting with Riz and I was I just couldn't believe like there
were there was there was just some, you know, but you could
tell if you said something bad about their cars, they would
they would hate you. They would be like, hey, it's
never bad. Like, yeah, they were just, they
were that I don't. Care.
Well, I don't care. No.
But look what happens when someone does something cool like
the gymney. You know?
(01:23:27):
I love a gymney, as a lot of us here.
Rob's own 1. You know, Look what?
Look what happens when you do something that's mechanical.
Old school of them. They sell a bloody manuals even
still. Yeah my God, they sell bucket
like they was waiting lists for the damn things.
You know, because they were priced right.
They were cool or funky, but they were pretty old school.
They're not real techie, so it can still be done.
(01:23:49):
I think it appealed to the rightgenre.
But here's the thing, here's thething, it's price point like
like it wasn't, it was a sort ofsuper expensive car.
Like it really isn't so. The Jiminy do you mean?
Yeah, the Jimmy, like, I mean, it's a bit more expensive now,
but like it's in. The 30s, you know, it's not a
it's not a not a big spend they. Were funky and they came in some
(01:24:11):
pretty cool colours. They did.
Yeah, they did, yes. And still do.
The I was just talking to him yesterday about the new
Mahindra, the the little baby Mahindra.
I don't know if any of you have just seen that.
It's so cute. It's it's a funky looking little
thing, 3 three cylinder 1 litre 23990 and 26990 I think for the
(01:24:33):
two different models. The 26990 car has a panoramic
roof. It's got, you know, the, all the
piano black interior, which you know, I'm not a fan of.
But the idea of it, it's, it's really well appointed.
And the, the review I read said how it's, and how it's
refreshingly free of all the bings and the bongs and the
Dings and the, you know, all that sort of stuff.
(01:24:56):
But it got all the safety gear and then it's, it's a new class
of car. I was reading that or a new, new
category in India that's basically like AK car.
So that's why it's got a really short overhang at the back.
So it's a similar, it's bigger than AK car, but but it's the
Indian government have introduced a class of car
(01:25:17):
essentially like the K classes in Japan and this fits into
them. And yeah, I drove past the
dealership yesterday and they had about 30 of them lined up
there. Yeah, that's cool.
They'll sell really well. I mean, they're, they're cool.
They've got funky looking alloysand stuff and yeah, they've.
Got a seven year warranty on the3rd.
Yeah. Could be a winner.
Could be a winner. Stay tuned and find out.
(01:25:38):
Well, I think we've, we've had abit of a good discussion about
that. I think we'll move into the car
quiz, which our good friend Rob has has kindly offered to to do
from the. Quiz, yeah, I have, and David
Influence sort of really got me going here.
It's going to be everything Leyland tonight.
It's not. It's not.
About. I'm completely starved so love.
(01:26:03):
It I want to go which car manufacturer developed the
That's the first to develop a certain feature, OK.
Cool. OK, cool.
So. Rob, some of these we might
have. So.
I guess one of the questions, I'm going to say Sweden for the
seat belt and Volvo. No, I'm not going to go there
all. Right, so so.
(01:26:24):
We're trying to make them a bit harder.
All right. So basically, so I'll start with
the first question. That's where is a good place to
start. Always the first one or the
second one? Which car?
Because it is actually your second question on my list
anyway. Which car manufacturer developed
the 1st or was first to develop the carbon fibre monocoque
(01:26:45):
chassis? Ed.
Ed. Ed Go.
Yeah, sorry, I said Ed. No one said anything.
I thought go. Sorry, Ed.
Was it BMW? No, David.
David McLaren. Yep.
Yeah. It's the phonic 1.
That's the phonic. Yeah.
Oh, well, I'll score. So it's all good.
(01:27:06):
All right. Yep.
So that's that one. So.
All right. What is the name of the first
car to feature active aerodynamics?
Matthew. Yeah, Matthew.
Active aerodynamics. I'm going to say it would be the
Nissan R31. It's not What?
(01:27:30):
Google sees or AI Scott, but go Scott.
Is it the Mitsubishi 3000GT? No.
No, because the the 30 ones had the the little chin spoiler that
used to pop yeah. They had that that would come
down. I thought maybe the 3000GT
because it would it had active arrow on the rear.
(01:27:52):
And on this. Front as well.
Ed. I said, was it the Porsche?
911. No, but you're getting closer to
that part of the world. David.
David. Was it the Audi TT?
No, no. So who's I?
Had to try and stop him taking Yeah, that's.
(01:28:14):
True, Chad. I'm going to go in Porsche 944.
No, no. Well, I think I know the car
now, but Anthony's still got I guess.
Go on, Anthony. Look, there was one that came in
came into mind, but I know it's not old enough.
(01:28:34):
I was initially going to say like as soon as you said active
error, I was thinking like the Mitsubishi 3000 GTS, but I know
they're like your your 90s generation.
But I'm going to be saying we'regoing to be going earlier than
that anyway. And given that you keep going
down the bullsh route 959. No, it was more European.
(01:28:55):
And this is what it's telling me, right?
And correct me if I'm wrong, this is everyone out, Yeah?
Yeah, everyone. 'S out, all right, It's a
Ferrari F40. Oh, really?
Cheers. OK.
That's early 80s it. Was the first have active era
there? You go all.
Right question #3 which car holds the record for the fastest
(01:29:17):
lap around the Isle of Man TT course?
Car. Which car?
Production car I'm using. Production car.
OK. All right.
Can we have a year or a decade? It, it'll be well, it, it only
gives me the brand and, and series of car and those cars
(01:29:42):
were made from the late 90s right throughout to today.
OK, Yeah. That's a good hint.
Chad Well, actually I don't knowif they still make them, but
it's it's not a GDR, is it Nissan GDR?
No, I don't know how many cars went around it, but this one's
got the fastest. Could it?
Could it be the other car that went around it?
(01:30:03):
Matthew, I'm going to say if it's from the 90s onwards, it's
got me thinking Porsche, Porsche, Porsche cave in.
No, no, OK. Well.
Anyone else, Scott? I know there was one, but I
don't think it was production. It was a Subaru WRXSTI.
(01:30:26):
That's what it says, and I reckon I'll give it to you.
Oh. OK.
Yes. Interesting.
Yeah, yes, Well done. So what would that be?
The 22 view or something? Yeah.
It might have been a special edition one or something, but
they. It was like, you know, you got
the companies like Pro Drive andstuff.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. There was 1 and actually had
(01:30:46):
like DRS. Oh, wow.
Yeah. OK, OK, that's cool.
Yeah. You can get it on like green
trees, my 7 and everything. That's kind of how I knew about
it and I was leaning towards that.
Yeah, it's mental. Like you've got to watch it.
It's mental. I advise you to watch this thing
(01:31:06):
and how fast it goes around crazy.
Wow, wow, well done. Real good one, right question #4
which car manufacturer developedthe first continuously variable
transmission? Yep.
Go on, David Daff. No, that's not what they're
saying here. Oh, OK, for a production car.
Daff as in the truck brand? Well, they didn't produce a
(01:31:30):
small car. As well.
Oh, right, Variomatic transmission.
Yep. CVT for a production car.
Which manufacturer? The first, yeah.
Next thing no. That's a.
Great question, actually, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Was it Honda? No, but yeah, I like your
thinking in that, Richard, Chad.Toyota.
(01:31:54):
No, the stool within that. Matthew, I'm going to say
because they've got terrible ones, Nissan.
No, but let's just reel off all the Japanese brand.
Anthony Stuart Subaru. Yes, yes.
Subaru OK. Anthony, you got it.
(01:32:14):
And a bonus point, what was the actual model?
That it came out in OK. Did it come out in Australia?
OK, it didn't. No, no, she.
Didn't. I'm not aware.
Of it I don't know. What?
I'm drawing a blank. David, Yes, yes, David, you've
got it. What?
Was it the Subaru? Which is what?
(01:32:37):
A little Hatch little one, a bitbit bigger than a Fiori sort of
thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's what it says. I don't know how accurate these
are, but that's that's what it says.
So there you go. All right, question #4 we won't
do a score check yet. We'll go up to 5 What is the
name of the first car to featurea fully digital instrument
(01:33:01):
cluster? Matthew fully.
Digital. Fully digital.
Matthew. Yeah, Matthew.
Fully digital, I'm going to say the Aston Martin Lagonda.
Got it shot. Hang on.
Well, have you ever seen them? They were nuts.
Bang on. They were absolutely nuts.
(01:33:21):
They were completely nuts. Yeah.
Insane. There would no work.
You know how much? Faith they have in in Aston
Martin Lagonda's and their they're fully digital
instruments. They actually have an old school
cable driven odometer under the bonnet to tell you how many kill
up. Oh bloody hell, we don't trust
(01:33:42):
it that much. Yeah.
Yeah, cooked. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
All right, so we're halfway through.
We'll do a score check. Anthony on one, Chad yet to
score, Scotty on one, David on 2, Ed yet to score, and Matt on
the ones. So it could be anyone's game.
Anyone's games? You have anyone's game?
There you go. All right, question number six
(01:34:02):
here. Which car manufacturer developed
the first production car with mid engine layout?
This will be a tricky one. Meet engine light.
OK. Matthew.
Yeah, Matthew. Lamborghini.
Yes, I'll give you one point forthat and I'll give a an
(01:34:24):
additional point. Bonus point if you get the
model. Matthew.
Yeah, the mural. Yeah, Go on, Matthew.
Yes, it is 2 points, Matthew. Done, done.
Well done. Nice.
I'll. Take that.
All right, question #7 what is the name of the first car to
feature adaptive cruise control?Matthew.
(01:34:46):
Adaptive cruise control? Yeah.
Go, Matthew. It's close.
No, I'm. Going to say a Volvo.
No. Adilac.
Sorry. Adilac.
No cruise. Adaptive.
Cruise control, adaptive cruise control.
This is again what I picked off the the net.
(01:35:07):
Just a manufacturer you're after.
And I'll give a bonus point for the the model.
Was it a Volkswagen? No it.
Wouldn't work. Let's engine light.
There's one more and then I'll I'll give you some clue.
I'm going to guess Toyota. No.
(01:35:27):
Clue. You want a clue?
Yeah. We're all back in for a.
Clue. All right, all back in for a
clue. It's the Japanese manufacturer.
Oh, OK. And we've have we mentioned the
car within our quiz at this particular point as a Japanese
car? No.
Ed. Ed Rexus No.
Matthew. Matthew yes.
(01:35:48):
Or so who Who got in first? Was it myself or David?
I don't know. I sort of missed it.
I think it might have been David.
Go, David. I'll say a Honda.
No, it wasn't. Matthew.
Matthew. Mitsubishi.
Yes. Well, here you go.
Please consider. And what model?
(01:36:12):
Matthew. Yeah.
I'm going to say it was something in the what?
Would they put it on? That's what I saw.
I'm I'm just. It's.
Not on a colt. On a on a glint.
No. OK.
I would say it would be one of their high end cars.
And what was their high end carsmade overseas?
(01:36:33):
Yes, Scott. Sorry, Ed, you got it.
You said diamante, Diamante. Diamante.
Yes. I was going to say Magna as a
joke and then you. Get one point.
You get one point for that, we'll give you one that's.
On the scoreboard On the scoreboard.
Game of the Game. So how's that?
Is anyone? It's Oh, no, it's not anyone's
(01:36:54):
capable. Sorry, Chad.
All right, so Ed got that all right with question #8 which car
manufacturer developed the firstproduction car with turbocharged
diesel engine? David.
David. I mean, it's the same.
It's their dispense. Correct.
(01:37:16):
Oh good. And nicely done, David.
That was good. And do we want to do a bonus
question? Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, which model? Which model?
David, Matthew. David Oh, no, no, I'll go the
123 series. Which is?
Would that be like the three? 100.
Yes, it is. Yeah, I'll give it to you.
(01:37:37):
The 300. SD I think SD Yep.
Or in the S class. Yeah, but.
Yeah. All right, so we've got 2
questions left and we'll do a score check.
Yeah, right. And you we've got Anthem, One
Chance Zero, Scotty on one, David on 4, Ed on one and Matt
(01:37:59):
on 4. It's a game.
And we've got 2 questions. Left I know MI know.
So Chad, Chad, this is your chance to really screw.
You can. Do it, Chad.
Come on. I'm on so here we go.
Question #9 Which car manufacturer developed the first
production car with retractable hardtop roof?
(01:38:22):
Ed. I I think it got.
It I know it was me, but I forget the name of it was that
American thing where the roof goes in the boot?
Bong No. Matthew.
Oh, OK. Matthew.
Was it the? Was it the SLK?
No, it's not worth. Retractable sunroof.
(01:38:42):
Retractable Retractable roof Hot.
Top roof just. It's a metal top roof.
Well, Ed Ed was thinking of the Ford Sky liner.
Yeah, that sixty 50s, fifties, 50s.
Well, yeah, there were a lot of ones, Yeah.
So this could be like, I, I, I I'd have to do some more
(01:39:03):
research on this. So regardless, even if I gave
you it, Ed, Yeah, you're still not there.
Oh, David, if I say David and I say Ford.
Again, I know there are a lot ofcars in the 50s and 60s, but I
don't know how this particular car or how old it is.
I'll need to look it up. OK.
Not a Ford Thunderbird, no, it's.
(01:39:24):
Not a Ford I'll give anyone elsebefore I give a clue to.
Have a clue? Just say like I like.
It's no, I'll give you we'll. Resend it to give.
Everyone a fresh go. It's a European car.
OK, European car. As I was going to throw it out
(01:39:46):
there because they always do weird ass shit.
Peugeot. You got it.
Oh, really? Yeah.
Yeah. What Anthony got?
It. Now I don't know how old it is,
but it's a four O 2 eclipse. Four O 2.
That would be probably early. It might be 40s. 40s, yeah.
Yeah, yeah. Wow, what the hell does that
(01:40:08):
look like? Yeah, that.
Yeah, I like you thinking, Anthony, because you you've
owned, you've owned a pug and you you know, they they're
weird. I have.
I haven't owned a pug and they do weird.
Oh shit. Oh yeah, 30s is that that could.
Be yeah yeah, 30s. Oh great.
Great question. What a question.
How's that? How's that?
You wouldn't think so, would you?
(01:40:28):
No. No, you'd think American because
I was thinking American. You sort of.
It's doubting my Google search. Anyway, final question is Dave
and Matt fighting for the the win here?
But everyone, I reckon everyone should be in on it so and then
we can do a bonus question or something.
(01:40:49):
What is the name of the first car to feature laser headlights?
Laser, Matthew. All right, Matthew.
No, David got in first. Sorry, David.
No, David got in first. BMW.
That's what I once said. That's what I was going to say,
BMW. Well done, David.
(01:41:10):
David Win. Yeah, and I want you the bonus
question. About a bonus question.
These. Are.
Laser Laser. And it was the I8 apparently.
There you go. So anyway, we won't dwell on
everyone else's score, but David, you won that and Matt and
(01:41:32):
everyone else is taking food. Well, at least David, we're on
the same wavelength about BMW, so.
Correct. Correct.
I was I. We're on either.
Way we're all we're all. Winners.
No, we're not. No, I don't.
Like that connection? Everyone gets a badge.
Participation, especially for me.
Oh. Chad, it's all right.
(01:41:53):
Mate, it's all right, Ted. You.
You weren't. You weren't.
Was it last week? Yeah.
I did, yeah. Chad, you smashed it last week.
You can't win every week, Ted. No, get her.
I actually really liked your quiz, Rob.
I thought that was the first of of certain quiz.
That was great. Yeah, it.
Was funny though. That's funny.
When I was doing the research straight away it comes up right.
(01:42:15):
These are the questions I've got.
Which short lived Australian coup never reached full
production? It was a Leyland 47.
Which Australian car manufacturer developed the P-76?
It was a Leyland coming up in Google.
Just Leyland's. You've googled too much Leyland.
They know too much of what you like the algorithm.
The algorithm is just Leyland, yeah.
(01:42:37):
Must be. It's cookies.
It was. Funny.
Well, thanks for doing the quiz,Rob.
That was, that was a really goodquiz.
That was, that was good though. I really wonder.
Thanks. Great, great, great.
Educational. Educational David, is anyone you
want to thank? I just like to thank my my years
of reading weird ass car magazines to Subaru just be out
(01:43:00):
of somewhere where I didn't everthink of this day.
There you go that let's think those weird ass magazines.
That's it's important weird ass magazines.
Yeah. I think that's a podcast,
gentlemen. Let's do some plugs.
Scotty's golf tip of the week. Golf tip of the week.
I can't remember if I said this one before, but I was just
watching something earlier this week about it where when you're
(01:43:24):
aiming for the green, you know, you tend to kind of aim for the
pin and obviously to make it more challenging because it's
not like it's hard enough already.
They'll put the pin in spots, might be left corner, right
corner and things like that. Just always aim for the middle
of the green. You're always going to be safer
if you just aim for the middle of the green.
(01:43:45):
You get it to land there and then you can just practise and
concentrate on your putting fromthere.
There's no point going and trying to attack the the pin
itself because most likely you might have to hit over a bunker
that might be there at the frontto get onto that green edge and
might be on a bit of an incline. So you might get it on the
green, but it's just going to roll straight off.
(01:44:05):
So just hang for the middle of the green.
Can't go wrong. Like it?
Good one, good one. Rob's cuts, fabrications,
firefighting, electrical, neighbour hating.
John's on John's. Quiz Rob's quiz Rob's quizzes.
Rob's quizzes. Quizzes.
There, Really. That's Rob's fresh cuts.
(01:44:28):
Fresh cuts. So it's just went.
Look, you did a great job. Very nice $4.00 cut.
Dollar cuts. So David and Edward, you you'll
understand this when you listen back to the podcast I'm
uploading tonight. Oh, I've.
Seen. OK.
Good to. Know so yeah, so hit us up and
(01:44:51):
we can pass you on to to Rob forany anything like that Anthony
anything you want to plug. Bugs are bad, OK.
Yeah, I can't do it. Just.
Yep. Thanks, Mr Hat.
Just just the standard things from your your local TAC funded
official. Yep, thank you.
Thank you, Edward Bunting. Anything you want to plug?
(01:45:12):
Well, got a Master 2 hatch for sale.
Focus. For sale.
It's just on the point of the. Trading.
Post. It's trading post.
It's by swap and sell Chad Ash. Sorry mate.
Oh. Well, Ed, the the focus that you
got what what year in that's a. 4/4 door hatch in white in an
(01:45:35):

But it's gonna be you know, I mean it's a little mileage on
the country Oregon. It's going to be like, it's
going to probably be like 6 grand or something.
(01:45:57):
Big dollars. People ask, people ask Green R
for four for them, you know, then they've done 200.
People are serving, yeah, serving grand for a camera.
Yeah, they didn't get separate Grant Anthony.
Believe me, they didn't get anything.
Who? Wants to Skype, do you know?
It's 999. Nine, yeah.
(01:46:18):
Yeah, yeah. I'll let you know when it's
ready and we can talk. I'll see what my final bill is
on it. It might not be that bad.

I've got nothing to plug. Nothing to plug, Chad.
Sorry, sorry. Except, except, except.
Did anyone else watch any of theGoodwood live stream over the
(01:46:39):
weekend? I saw bits and pieces, I saw
those pieces, I saw Dua Lipa, soI was happy.
And then? The highlight.
The highlight was dual. I see.
Nigel Mansell. Nigel Mansell and the William.
That was the coolest. Place in the in the in the FW11
driving up the hill. That was one of the coolest
things I've ever seen. I, I remember seeing that back
(01:47:01):
tyre on that car blow on the back straight on the last lap in
Adelaide. Wow, we're back.
A lot of memory that that car. Is that not?
The the the best is. That not the best, the best, the
best living room car. I'm sorry.
Comma William, it's fantastic and the Honda E concept, the
Honda Sport E Concept. That was.
(01:47:22):
Basically a re bodied N1, the love child between an N1 and A
and a city turbo 2. Google it, very cool.
Honda really showed up this time, didn't they?
Had Goodwood. They they.
Reviewed. Yeah, they.
Had a. They it was.
It was good day. Honda is back, baby.
(01:47:43):
Honda is back, good to see and and Prelude, yeah, that's a
that's a sports car. Motocom is coming back so.
Well, it's for. Goodwood now is better than a
motor show. I agree.
Absolutely. You get to see the cars out on
the like driving, but it's like a good mixture.
You get these brand new ones that are coming out and you can
see all these old awesome stuff too.
(01:48:04):
Any of you car people make a bucket list while you can and
put it on it because it's unforgettable?
How? Have you been there?
We should all sorry. Have you been?
I went to the revival OK about five years ago.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But the festival speeds the next
one. But the revival is mine on every
level. I think, I think we should.
(01:48:26):
I think we should plan it and weshould all go, yeah, that would
be that would that would be incredible.
That's it. That'll be let's let's do it
then. Let's let's, let's plan it.
Let's plan. It plan it.
No, I mean, I mean, OK. Let's start.
Let's start planning. I'll be hassling Shannon's every
time I go there and renew my insurance.
Say I want to win that boys for the festival and.
(01:48:48):
They never win, do you reckon? Anyone's ever won that prize?
I reckon it's the same prize as the last one.
Year I've never seen when the prizes are getting drawn.
Has anyone won the Indian motorbike?
They're giving one. I'm still the same.
The same thing from like 10 years ago.
I've been going to Vegas over the years.
It's a 2017. There's this Mustang on display
(01:49:10):
to win, and that Mustang has been there for 15 years.
It's one of the early model Mustangs on the poker machines.
That's funny, yes. So I think we just have to pay
for it. Well, I'm happy to.
(01:49:31):
I think that'll be an awesome trip.
I'm happy to go. I think we should we should talk
and plan that. That'll be great.
