(00:00):
Well, on a nearby Shore, his brother Goro.
And his brothers very, very goodfriend roshi.
It's just gonna leave, dude. Definitely not boyfriends.
(00:27):
Hello everyone and welcome to Castle Bravo.
A Godzilla versus retrospective.I'm Derek and I'm Charlotte and
we're two siblings here to examine the history of the
Godzilla franchise one movie at a time.
We're joined this week by podcasting, virtuoso Matt storm.
Matt, how you doing bud? Oh good.
Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be here.
I have to say that intro is weird for me because I'm used to
(00:48):
listening to you all at like 1.5to 2 times speed goes much
faster when I'm listening Right.I am so excited because you are
one of the first people that we actually booked as a guest.
We're like I knew if I'm doing this big, big project, if we're
going to get a bunch of guests. Like obviously I want the other
sddc crew involved like I had I had to get Stormy in and this
(01:11):
movie. We picked like very specifically
and I'm glad that my memory served because I think this was
a good match. Perfect.
I and also one that I think I'veseen like way back.
And to like a lot of it seemed very familiar.
So, yeah, like y'all have talkedabout like, my Godzilla history
is like a like weird psychedelicHaze of subtitles and not
(01:36):
subtitles and like dub and not dub.
And I couldn't tell you which was what, until y'all start
describing the plots of some of these films.
Like, oh, I've seen some of these, I think.
Yeah, well in like, you know, again many of these movies
Charlotte hasn't seen most of them I have seen.
Most of them. It's been so long that there.
Very fresh to me, especially when we're watching them in, you
(01:57):
know, much better format, right widescreen.
Like original aspect ratio original Cuts, even a lot of the
ones that are dubbed. Like, I think you watched
today's movie on HBO Max which was the light Criterion version
and it was in English dub but it's a new English dub, like an
(02:17):
international dub that's way. Less awful than a lot of the
like the versions We saw on VHS is a kid.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So Charlotte yeah.
Charlotte. Yeah.
Okay. There you are.
I said, yeah. And it picked up in one thing.
They didn't pick up over here. That's interesting.
(02:38):
Well, this Court's being a but today, how are you doing today?
I'm good. Just good.
Yeah, always just good. Yeah, you know, I'll take it.
Things things not grayed out there, so if you can be good,
that's, that's better. I have chosen to largely ignore
it because if I don't I will go into an anxiety spiral, it's
(03:00):
fine. If somebody comes for my trans
homies I'm just gonna We go. I have to censor that in the
Minecraft. Minecraft Minecraft right in
Fortnight so hoof. Let's talk about where we are.
In Castle Bravo, it has been an interesting shift into the
(03:24):
second half of season 2 here. We had this long build-up of
Godzilla as this increasingly like solid franchise.
Is all these movies kind of became Consolidated under
Godzilla and it was hit after hit after hit.
And even the, like bad ones werepretty good.
In the grand scheme of things. Destroy All Monsters was a
(03:47):
wonderful cap off to the franchise but it made too damn
much money and Touhou desperately wanted more of that
Dosh. So we got the very very cheap
cheaply. Produced all monsters attack
which is the It's very stock footage.
Laden, like, children's anti-bullying story from
(04:09):
original director. Ishiro Honda, we got the
collapse of the Japanese film industry.
The death of eiji tsuburaya, Honda leaving Touhou Touhou
dramatically downsizing bad times for everyone, you got
Godzilla vs. Hedorah which was a incredibly
cheaply produced made in like a month by a mostly untouched.
(04:34):
Tested crew and it kind of showseven if there's parts of that
movie that I think are, I do still like and it is full of
heart. But then last week we got
Godzilla vs. Guy again.
June Phuket is back and it was like, oh man, it almost felt
like we had Honda back. You sure?
A Honda back with a proper budget.
(04:56):
Even we got a great weird alien.Invasion story with some fun,
Aesop's at it. And Really cool set of enemy
monsters. Now, Jun fukuyama is back with
Godzilla versus Megalon and thisis kind of an Infamous movie in
the franchise. It's one of those ones that was
(05:16):
available on VHS and a lot of video stores.
So a lot of people in our generation probably have
memories of seeing this on tape. This also very famously is one
of the most popular episodes of Mystery Science.
Theater 3000 was covering this movie.
So a lot of people Have memoriesof seeing this movie on TV
through mst3k. And there's, there's a good
(05:43):
reason for that. Well, yeah.
Without further Ado, Charlotte why don't you kind of recap
Godzilla versus Megalon for us. Okay, so the year is 1970 Acts.
And on a small Aleutian Island. I don't know what that is.
(06:04):
I'm be honest with you, but it'sa small island near Japan.
They were performing another nuclear test and this nuclear
test affected Monster Island, including Monsters like Godzilla
and Anguirus, and Rodan that. Last one will not be showing up
again in the movie. But Rodin was flapping its wings
(06:26):
up style of didn't like I love how in this scene where they're
showing all the There's like kind of disappear or something
happened. My boy ain't Garris.
One of my favorites. Just kind of B it into the pit,
like, yeah, he's gonna Rob into the Earth.
It's gone forever. And then title crawl, right.
(06:46):
And then explosions because that's the kind of movie this.
Yeah, we need to get you hyped up.
So here's, here's some Kabooms. That's right.
I did love the sequence of the, the bomb tests on the island
sinking, like, crumbling the Allen Department sinking into
the ocean. Yeah.
Really good. Miniature work.
Yeah, so the version of the movie that I saw, I did click
(07:08):
through the corrected one. Mhm.
But the version that I do, unfortunately, got a call Clear.
The head like a bad denoising filter on it.
So everything was kind of hazy everything look.
Like one of those like have you seen those things where they put
a filter over everything and everything tries to make like,
an animal face? Oh yeah, yeah, everything.
That wasn't a person look like that in the movie.
(07:28):
It was like this. I was going to say it's kind of
like playing a Super Nintendo game with the with the super-ego
filter on like I've never done that.
I never will no, well good don't. so, A boy.
His name is rokuro. His peddling.
A fish bike through the water. And you can't tell me, you don't
(07:51):
want this dolphin, but I want that.
I want this. You want to join a battle on it.
I thought he was riding like a little like dolphin monster
light. Like this felt like kids movie
father. Like I thought he was actually
riding a creature at first and then they got in closers like oh
no it's just a badass, dolphin submersible.
I want water bike. Yeah.
Yeah this II saw this. And for the rest of my
(08:13):
childhood, I wanted like a waterbike thing to take out on a lake
and it never happened. It's really sad.
Yeah, that is so sad. I mean, I grew up, I grew up in
a city. We didn't have any lakes too
drunk to ride those ends. So wouldn't have even thought to
be an option to me, well, on a nearby Shore.
His brother Goro and his brothers very very good friend
(08:38):
Hiroshi. It's just definitely not
boyfriends. They're they're watching.
They are too well dressed. And handsome, too.
Not be dating. I'm sorry.
Yeah. And they just, yeah, is to grown
like Dapper men out on a picnic by the lake together in their,
(08:59):
in their lovely little suits IDMstormy.
I was like, they should be holding hands.
Yeah, that's that's really what the whole thing is.
Missing is just them holding hands.
Like it's just cute. Yeah, so they're watching rokuro
from the shore and An earthquakestarts and like a Whirlpool
(09:24):
forms and there's glowing light from the water and rokuro is
trying as hard as he can. The pedal away from it, but it
ends up with a garrote Hiroshi, has like, pull him to shore with
a rope and fire a rope out at him and yeah, he's peddling in
their polling, but for a bit there, he's just getting slowly
sucked into the center of the vortex and I was like, oh,
they're gonna kill a child earlyfor that.
(09:47):
Yeah, But they managed to get him ashore and they shake it
off. They start driving home and you
know the radio is talking about this new Ravine that's formed
were a lake once was and turns out it was the aftershocks from
those nuclear tests causing those cracks.
And just as an aside that the boys are talking about
(10:08):
hypothetical continents, you know, mu lemuria yeah Mariah
just wow, if we keep doing this this nuclear testing stuff will
Up like these other undersea kingdoms.
Yeah, no. But that's not important that
surely come back up and salute Lee now.
So they get home and hero, she is like, well yeah.
(10:31):
Goro I hope the be earthquakes didn't affect your robot.
My friend friend. My good buddy, my good buddy.
It pal, my roommate. They were roommates.
So they go towards the Door and they find the doors already open
and they get attacked by, like, some Confederate looking men.
(10:55):
I got my God, this is the first of so many fights option, but
it's accurate. It is so accurate.
I texted Eric. I was like, my favorite thing
about this movie is either the music rips or it's non-existent
and like in the fight scenes, there is never any music.
It's just the grunts of people taking hits and like she found a
(11:15):
tweaking on the floor and just so funny.
Make It Stop seems like it's weird.
Also fights are barely fights their scrapes at best.
Yeah, well for the most part, there's one bit later in the
movie that was like, oh God, that So after checking on the
others to make sure they're okay, Hiroshi chases after
(11:37):
these. These people, as they leave,
dude, leaps into a car like an action hero.
Yeah, it's so cool. The burglars like while he's out
chasing them that the burglars didn't didn't steal anything the
robots intact. The only thing they really left
(11:58):
behind is like this weird sand and some of the files.
But eventually, the thieves likeset a fire outside of her car
and stopped roshi from from driving after them, normal way
to do that. Yeah, sure.
There's there wasn't any other way, they could have
accomplished that. No, but so he can't pursue them
anymore. So he goes back home to them and
(12:21):
Hiroshi. Did during all that managed to
grab a button off one of the suits and it's like the same
colors, the sand they found and they run some tests on it and
girl works on the robot a littlemore.
And we'll see the results of that in a moment.
But rokuro has this small bike that he built.
Like he he pulled a baby writer,he called it writable, it's the
(12:44):
tiniest motorcycle I've ever fucking seen.
And just yeah, my thing about this.
This scene though, is that her oh she's just kind of like okay,
have fun. Yeah.
Oh my God roko leaves like Therego go ride.
These country roads on your tinyfor mile, an hour motorcycle
(13:05):
with no safety and supervision. This is like the opposite
experience to my overbearing. Jewish parent.
Experience growing up, like, I couldn't go down the block
without telling them who I was hanging out with where we were
going. What time?
I'd be home. This little kids, like, I'm
gonna go cruising piece. Yeah.
Yeah, you can't use the word cruising when talking about this
(13:27):
movie, we can't Can't, we can't refer to the child as cruising
in the gay Godzilla movie. So the sand, it turns out is
like, millions of years old. And it comes from like 3,000 km
(13:48):
underwater near Easter Island, very specifically.
And here we learned that Goro has named his his.
Now completed robot Jet Jaguar, And you know, I'd only seen Jet
Jaguar and video games before now, but he's really cool.
I was so happy when I realized it was Jaguar because I was
(14:10):
like, oh, I love Jet Jaguar. He's one of my favorites.
I forgot he was in this film. This is the one he's in and it's
fantastic for that this wonderful Ultraman knockoff.
So the, the weird Confederate men are listening in on their
conversation and now they know that the robots been finished
because they like bug the lab. And so they kidnap rokuro
(14:36):
because he's outside with no supervision stop in front of him
as he's like, biking along and opened the door, and it looks
like he's going to smash hard into the car door.
But he stops just in time and they just take him.
Yeah, they forced him to lead them into the lab and then the
(14:57):
boys get knocked out by like gasfrom his Souls history.
Shoot like knockout gas clouds, but first like they get rokuro
to open the door and then they shoot him.
And I wasn't aware that. Those were like, chloroform
guns. I won't We are going to kill a
(15:19):
child this movie. This is the start of tons of
incredible slapstick throughout this film that I don't think was
meant to be funny, but it sure as hell is I don't, I don't know
because like fuka de has a very slapstick sense of humor.
And Honda had a very slapstick sense of humor and watching this
(15:39):
movie and thinking back to stufflike the original Mothra for
example, like really or, or likeDecora Right was very like I
don't know, man. When these people want to be
funny, they can they can go Looney Tunes and this is a
Looney Tunes, a smoothie. Yeah, but it's hard to say.
(16:01):
So the the men report to some place called see topia Of course
they do. Yeah and they order them to make
Jet Jaguar lead megalon to its attack targets and right after
this happens. They I don't know if they're
just doing a dance or if it's supposed to be a ritual to
(16:24):
awaken megalon. I think it's supposed to be a
ritual. Oh yeah.
Oh yeah. The bit with the only women who
will appear in the entire movie.Yeah.
And they are scantily clad dancing in circles are but
there's like there's like Like here's the thing, I don't think
once again, going by my reading of this movie, as very,
definitely the gay one. I don't think they're intended
(16:46):
to be sexy. They've done another Lady.
Gaga shit, goin on there, for there, for the gate.
Their hats. Yeah.
Look at her hair. No, this was like, I've seen
this drag show before? Yeah, I love, they have to make
sure because I'm sorry. There's, if you think about
there's not a single female character in this movie, which
is weird, because Jun, Again like fuqra and Honda both
(17:11):
regularly, put like female characters in lead roles often,
multiple, female characters. Like it's super weird to have
the total absence of one. And I kind of think it's,
because if there was a female character, you might get
mistaken that she's the love interest.
She's not one is, they want yourboyfriend gay is possible.
Yeah, yeah, so the the Seto PianEmperor says that see taupe.
(17:37):
Has been disturbed by the nuclear testing going on and
they're going to retaliate now. Charlotte.
Do you want, do you want the best news of your fucking life?
Sure. Do you want to know who the
Emperor of see Topia is? Yeah, that's Mark fucking
Jackson baby. No idea what this is.
(17:58):
Our favorite Looney Tunes, motherfucker from Decora Mark,
fucking Jackson with all of the superpowers of the unearned.
Confidence of a white man in Japan.
Yeah. I love how it like the whole
crew of foreign Invaders are allwhite folk.
Yeah, just yeah, always always ablast when well you're not going
(18:19):
to have no melanin under the ground, right?
Okay, but now now I think that it just is Mark Jackson.
They never liked name him. You can't be sure.
What did, what did Mark Jackson do after he stopped being a
diamond G-Man? A fc Topia.
That's right. He went underground, is no way
to know. So megalon launches up to the
(18:44):
surface and Goro and rokuro, gettied up in a metal container.
That the one of the Tito Pian men is paying these truck
drivers to transport over the truck.
Cab just has a giant poster of anaked women.
Yeah. Tits out and everything nips and
(19:06):
all on the back I'm like, this is Okay, that Harry censored in
the VHS version. Children's movie.
I feel exactly the seat opens activate Jet Jaguar, Which flies
towards megalon because supposedto lead it.
Of course, Hiroshi, meanwhile istied up back at the lab, so he
(19:32):
can't do anything at the moment, but the brothers are being taken
to see Topia, which is described, as having been made
in a bubble when the morea sank,They they like have oxygen and
they created an artificial sun. Somehow somehow what you do?
Yeah, so they're like technologically advanced down
(19:56):
there. Hiroshi in one of the coolest
fight scenes. I think, manages to fight this
autopia in the lab like while tied to this chair.
But he like shatters the chair and then like slowly is fighting
with pieces of the chair. Yeah, like as it comes apart.
And he Whines is this the game? Where he grabs the dudes head?
It's just bashing into the floor.
(20:17):
Yeah, at least he has like tell me what, you know, or I will
kill you and he's just slamming. He can't answer.
You're giving him a concussion man.
I love that. This is also like so much of
this movie is paired with two, like two scenes ongoing, and it
jumps back and forth. And like, yeah, the, the crate
(20:38):
seen that we were just talking about.
Like, this is the best part of physical comedy of like any of
these movies. Ever.
Because every time they slide toone end, there's our cartoonish
Bonk that happens. And the only act in pain as
they're trying to get untied. Like they just slide back and
forth and you just hear bunk every time.
And every time I lost my shit, Ijust laughed my ass off.
(21:00):
Fucking love this movie. It's such a good movie.
Yeah. So right.
Yeah. Hiroshi fights off.
The guy, beats his skull anothergrounded to get answers and then
As I wrote here, there's a 70s Chase sequence, down some
stairs, and through some sheds. Yeah, I love that.
Also, the answer that he gets. Is there on a truck?
(21:23):
Like, we don't, we don't know where we don't know which truck,
even like the line in the trans Community Asset tracking.
Like, it's just, like, they're on the back of a truck and he's
like, I'm off, I'm gonna go findthem.
It's just probably every truck. I mean he probably would.
It's true. What would you do to find your
(21:44):
boyfriend? Exactly.
So megalon emerges on the surface and he's ordered to
attack Tokyo. So he's being led there by Jet
Jaguar and the news on the radiosays that a monster has
appeared. So the truck drivers are like we
should probably not go towards Tokyo.
There's a monster there but the Seto Pian holds them at gunpoint
(22:05):
but they like one of the guys Taps the other On the arm and
then there's like a hard turn. So, they fly onto the guy in the
seat and still is gone. And they end up taking his gun
away, and they throw him down a cliff in my translation, the
dubbed version. The Scream, he wasn't AA, as he
comes flying out of truck, and then rolls, I lost it.
(22:28):
I'm like, this is just like it was, I love voice actors,
because good or bad, like, it's the Resident Evil effect, right?
Like it doesn't matter it and like here.
It's the And then just rolls down the man so good.
So the the truck drivers go to dump the container down into
(22:49):
like an area below a damn with with the with the brother still
in it, but they stopped when they hear Mega lot because Mega
loans approaching the damn Hiroshi ins of driving up and
the truck drivers warned him to get away.
And then hijack, his car and leave.
Yeah, like they're just that they're out of there.
Mega Lon meanwhile is moving through the water like towards
(23:13):
the dam and breaks through it, like, floods, the whole area.
And this part was funny to me because megalon just like
floating in the water down, he gets like washed away because he
was not Mega, one's not very smart.
No, and yeah, was not prepared. It's funny to see a giant
monster in these movies. Fuck up.
Yeah, absent. If somebody else's intervention,
(23:35):
he just fucks up the dam and then get swept away in it
because As whoops. Yeah, I also love how here while
a rescue is in suing, I don't think megalon actually meant to
fling the cargo container but hesure does.
Oh my God, I fucking guts catapulted.
They were going through the air and I was like, oh they're dead.
(23:56):
Then like you're right. Your meat sauce.
When that lands I don't, right? Yeah, her.
Oh, she starts driving away and they Sure does like starts
Falling Towards megalon and megalon like spikes it like
Perry's in the are basically andlike it goes flying in the
(24:17):
brothers just kind of fall out. They're fine no death third
attempt at killing a child stillunsuccessful.
So Hiroshi ends up getting to the brothers you know gets in
the wake up and Goro reveals that he has a backup device for
controlling Jet Jaguar. And basically, all it needs is
like line of sight. Which was It was kind of his
(24:40):
honestly nice for this to happenbecause usually they'll be like,
oh no, someone took the computer, I can't control it
anymore. It's over in these movies or in
movies in general, but he had a backup.
So, Goro suggest, you know, maybe we should get Jack Jaguar
to get Godzilla for us. So that's what they're going to
(25:00):
do. Megalon ends up coming across
like some military defensive emplacements, and Just destroys
them with like it's lightning powers that it has.
Yep. Goro goes and tells the the
military commander that he can control a jaguar and they should
(25:21):
go get Godzilla's help. Meanwhile, megalodons like
skipping through the planes behind jaguar in the scene.
I don't, I don't know what is awesome.
I love it. The bounce, the joyful bounce
like I want to say at this pointand we're not even At the tip of
the iceberg. The special effects in this film
are phenomenal. They hold up so well, like from
(25:43):
the toy army vehicles to his bouncing around, the lightning.
Like all of it is just chefs kiss but like doing like he has
wings, do we know why he bounceslike this?
It's never explained. It's funny.
Megalon mesh was just wild because.
Yeah, he can fly. He does it in a couple of
(26:04):
sequences but he just he do be bouncing.
In a lot, he bounces and he skips and he's very frantic and
frenetic in his movements. A lot of times, especially liked
the bit where he loses Jet Jaguar and is flipping all over
the place and they're like, what's going on?
It's like he doesn't have any guidance, so he's just kind of
(26:25):
throwing a tantrum, I guess. Yeah, so the military flies Goro
up in a helicopter and he's ableto get control of Jaguar again.
The in what something I did not expect.
Because I hadn't seen this moviedid not look up the monster list
or anything. This utopian Emperor says they
should contact the space Hunter, like nebula em, and get a guide
(26:47):
to help fucking aliens on speed, dial for some reason, and I
commenced on chicken from the last film.
Yeah. Like I, when you asked me to do
this film, The only pre-fit preface was, it's the gayest one
and I was on I was in and like, as I watch it, I'm starting to
remember having seen this but like I was like oh this is the
(27:08):
actually, the Jet Jaguar move because let's be real Godzilla's
in the last 20 minutes like yes,a Jet Jaguar movie that happens
to have Godzilla at the end and like but then when they come
they call in Gigan, I'm like wait I can't miss.
Yeah, I thought that was the last one, what happened.
And I I thought like for the longest time my thought was, oh,
(27:31):
well yeah, they threw guy going in because they had the suit on
hand and they You know, needed another monster and that
explains why they, you know, through in this bullshit line of
calling the aliens for guy God, just because it was an enemy
monster suit, they had on hand, and that's not true, but we'll
get to that later. Yeah, so now megalodons like
(27:56):
smacking down the military's planes and while all this is
going on Hiroshi and broke Road, just like go to a store and grab
a model. Lane.
I was like, where is this going?Y-yeah, you cannot possibly
guess where this is going. Like, I just, I was like, what
are they looking for? Like, I had assumed they were
(28:16):
going to go back to the house but like I was like, what.
And why are they here at a shutdown model toy shop?
Yeah, Jet Jaguar. Manages to make it to Monster
Island and ask Godzilla for helpbasically just by big like hey
yeah. And then pointing behind you
just you just want to call does A combination of sign language
and semaphore like yeah. God, we haven't even touched
(28:41):
tip. The tip of the iceberg of the
communication finger quotes in this movie because the last,
like the once the tag team matchstarts the way they talk to each
other Big Air quotes is just wild.
Oh my God. Yeah.
So, now, Godzilla is on its way,but megalon has started its
(29:02):
Rampage in Tokyo. So then Hiroshi and Roker.
We're heading towards the lab and like they're the lab that
Jaguar was made in and they justfly the model plane directly
into one of the seat opens facesbefore like knocking him out.
I was like I was a child. I was aghast like it hits his
(29:26):
face and his nose explodes. Yeah, there's blood everywhere.
Like I was like, oh my God, there's so much blood.
There are like three scenes in this movie where there's a On a
blood and they see him apropos of anything like it's wild.
But this one. Yeah, that happens.
And then they, they fight him inside.
And this is where one of my favorite of the shoe tapping
fight scenes happens. We're like they're trying to
(29:47):
take him down and I can't remember if it's rokuro but one
of them grabbed. One of the random floating boxes
in the hallway and push it into the Seto Pian and knock him out.
Yeah. It's what its lowest like I came
in like a wrecking ball Can you just rides this crate?
(30:10):
Like, four feet. To knock a dude out.
Yeah, the crate suspended from achain from the ceiling.
I don't know, man, it's just there.
And it's just said, why is it there?
Because it's a weird laboratory that you never know what them
kooky scientists are up to So this heat LP and is knocked out.
(30:31):
Now, Goro shows up and he lets the other to know that Jaguar
has managed to get Godzilla and megalodons approaching rapidly.
So they decide to leave and megalon shows up in this utopian
ends up getting crushed by it. Yeah, I love how they try to
rescue the Seto Pian and he fights back and they're like a
(30:52):
just leave them and he lays there.
He doesn't get up right away. I'm like okay yeah might've
killed him. Okay, well, and then there's an
aside just to show that Goggins on its way.
Yeah, of course. Yeah.
Why stock footage from the last movie of him teleporting in, in
flying, right? I don't know if you noticed,
(31:13):
there's so when when megalon swatting down the planes, there
are there is stock footage of planes exploding with a claw in
the scene. Yes.
Like, if you look really close and there's and there's its
stock footage in this movie. Him flying over and attacking
the city with his Is like lightning horn.
A lot of that was stock footage from Ghidorah doing that to in
(31:35):
various movies. Yeah.
See you in my next to my next note is megalodons destroying
the same oil plants that have been blown up in the last couple
movies. Yes, it's not even subtle.
Yeah. And jaguar ends up going back to
the lab and like, basically justgives Goro a thumbs up because
(31:58):
it Jaguar now has a will Of its own and it's gonna go fight
Michael on it gained sentience on its trip.
And now he's going to protect the people because it can try
not because of reasons. Yeah, yeah.
And it approaches megalon and like grows to his size and just
like, Dex them. First thing, it does, the
(32:19):
special effects. Here are like good bad.
Like, it's clearly like this still image that they grow and
like, I just I love it between that and like the Super Sentai
like hand signals. Yes.
Yes. Yeah, it's very super Sentai.
It's just so goofy and I love it.
I love Jet Jaguar so much. I but Ultraman fan.
And so like this is this is the poor man's Ultraman essentially.
(32:41):
And it's so fun and what a wonderful, what a wonderful like
omage to tsuburaya as well, you know, given given that the
creator of Ultraman was also instrumental in the creation of
Godzilla. Yeah, so the boys start heading
towards the direction of the fight which Wastewater of boys
(33:01):
are we talking about here because we are we are all the
three pairs of boys. All the boys, all the boys, all
the boys. They're going towards the fight
and megalon does like the the Super Mario. 64 eyeball
technique. Yeah Jaguar just runs around in
a circle. Make some dizzy.
(33:22):
Yeah. And Goro says that it was
Jaguars determination that made him grow that big.
Okay sure. I mean it makes about as much
sense as anything else. Yeah.
I mean y'all made him so I don'tsee how you could be confused by
anything he does. But okay no he doesn't he
doesn't seem all that shocked. He's just like yeah this is a
(33:43):
thing to Jaguar can do. Yeah.
Okay. Godzilla is almost at the fight
but still not there. Megalon starts using like these
hit and run tactics by drilling underground and honestly Jet
Jaguar basically has the fight in hand but think I can appears.
Yep. And jaguar tries to fly away but
(34:07):
immediately get shot down. God it's so funny.
It's so the the comedic timing on this cannot be accidental.
He begins. Has to fly and just immediately
explosive at his back as he justFalls arms outstretched pose
unchanged to the ground. Oh, there's a lot of the pose
(34:31):
unchanged happening because likemegawatt and guidance are
playing volleyball with them. Basically.
Yeah. And he's just posed the same way
the whole time because it's funnier that way.
Yeah, I can't believe that this is bad work.
It's funnier this way. Yeah, so megalon walks up like
he's about to finish him but then Godzilla appears in all the
(34:55):
monsters square up. While Godzilla's like inching
back towards Jet Jaguar and who's to say that the this
moment that's about to happen where they like high-five to
team up and then we suddenly watching a tag team wrestling
match. Like big Kaiju Big.
(35:16):
Battle Vibes. Like this is the exact moment
where everybody involved with Godzilla knew that this was just
men in suits wrestling and it's just, and it gets Wilder, like,
there's a move that Godzilla pulls out towards the end that
I've seen clips of my whole lifeand forgot it was from this
film, but like that moment wherethey like, shake hands and talk
(35:39):
and then they like square up. Its just, oh yeah, they're all
performing like fighting game taunts at each other.
Yeah. They're killers and then it's
like literally 30 minutes of no almost no real talking of spoken
word. It's just monsters making noises
and fighting, it's amazing. Yeah, male on attacks first but
(35:59):
like Godzilla's just takes them both on for a while on his own
and then managed to like knock them.
Both out for a second and then Godzilla like kicks megalon
starts moving to guy again, but guy can does like a wake-up
attack. That's actually that's how I
wrote it out. Yeah.
Because he's kind of like fakingout.
He's pretending he's knocked outso that when Godzilla gets
(36:19):
close, he'll like sucker-punch him.
Yeah. Megalon like lobs a grenade but
Jaguar throws it back. Yeah, it's it.
Back into his mouth fucking idiot.
Why would you keep your mouth open when you spit grenades?
And that's your weak point? Don't do that.
(36:41):
Yeah. Godzilla ends up getting cut
like, like the first time when Godzilla, fuck I guess.
Yeah. Well, it was probably the exact
same shot, it's crazy. Yeah.
And this is the second time where it's like there's the
there's so much blood from that one shot and it's like, yeah,
Godzilla doesn't bleed the rest of the film.
(37:02):
No one does. But in that one shot when it
cuts into his shoulder, just blood everywhere, that's all of
my man. Gotta talk about your blood
pressure. Gotta get that shit down.
Then this is the point where a Jaguar like really just pops off
against megalon, but having swapback to, and having knocked
(37:24):
megalon out, Godzilla goes up toguy and who's like, holding Jet
Jaguar hostage, kind of? Yeah, I think that was the
intent. Yeah, but just ends up getting
Atomic breath. Like, Godzilla doesn't play
that. So, megalon starts bombarding
them. Both with explosives and
(37:44):
creates, like this big ring of fire that jaguar-lips Godzilla
up and out of. Yeah.
Oh my God. The big Godzilla just climbs on
his back and his fly. Yeah, and they just fly out of
it, but like very poorly becausethe carrying Godzilla's weight,
makes it hard for Jet Jaguar, tofly, I guess, yeah, what a
(38:04):
coffee fucking scene. But they lift up and out over
it, and then Godzilla Atomic breaths megalon, and seeing that
they're on the losing side now. The seat open Emperor is like,
all right, we should probably just close the Fisher's back up
now. I love that.
Like in a lot of these films it's always like the bad guy
(38:25):
gets defeated right? Or like the alien wedding ring.
Aliens get defeated here. They're just like oh our monster
lost. Let's go.
Yeah, I guess what moaning base slowly backing into the
Shrubbery right? Like yeah.
We were never here Jet Jaguar like flies up the guy in like,
slams amount of the sky and Godzilla just keeps blasting
(38:48):
megalon and then megalon like shoots a grenade up and it ends
up just right back in his own mouth.
Again, it's this is not a smart monster.
Yeah. So then Jaguar like puts guy get
into this hold and it lasts for a second.
I actually thought like he brokedragons arm or something because
guy's arm just stops moving. But he like throws guy get into
(39:13):
the air for Godzilla. Do atomic breath.
Mmm. And then guy get just leaves got
hands like I'm not doing fuck this shit.
I'm out, I'm out. Yeah, yeah and then after this
moment when he leaves when they went then Jaguar picks up
megalon and puts him in like a full nelson.
The best moment in almost the entire film.
Helped happens, Godzilla does a dropkick but like defying all
(39:37):
laws of fines for slides forwardon A like this is this, this is
the clip that like, if you've seen a clip of Godzilla on
Twitter or wherever like Drop kicking someone, it's this clip.
Yeah it's from this is him leaning backwards like feet
forward head backward and sliding on his tail like several
(39:58):
hundred feet to kick megalon. It's incredible, it's stupid,
it's insane. I love it and they do it twice
like you say you shot eyes just for for no reason.
This is when, when they did thisshit with Anguirus, in the end
of Godzilla vs. Gigan and they were like, oh,
this stupid shit with Anguirus? Flying backwards to hit.
(40:19):
Ghidorah was so good. We need to do it twice and I was
like, put a pin in that yeah. Because So mega mega on just
gets kicked from across the Plains and then like they did,
you start slamming in another ground over and over again, like
(40:41):
the ground by the tail just slamming.
Just like Hulk fucking whipping Loki into the ground, but in the
a slow motion. Yeah.
And then megalonyx like launchedinto the fissure nearby and then
they just sealed the Fisher behind him.
He's like I'm out. Get that ass out of here.
So Godzilla, having having done his job, leaves and rokuro, like
(41:05):
sends him off the boys. Go meet up with Jet Jaguar who
shrinks back down and he agrees to come back home with Goro in
the others because he knows he doesn't have free will unless
like, the Earth is in danger. Yeah.
He starts listening to the little controller around his,
the Goro's necklace, the necklace like Gore's wearing
because his Free Will is done because he has nothing like
(41:28):
Doesn't have to protect the Earth again.
And like, it's just and then they all walk off into the
sunset and one big. Happy family with the little
boy, riding to Jaguar. It's the most wholesome thing
ever. Yeah.
And then they, because this is afukudome movie and I'm starting
to realize, this is just a fuka thing.
They say the the messages behindthe movie at the end?
(41:52):
Yeah. Oh my God.
Yes. So there's some people to see
taupe Ian's were only trying to attack us because they were
threatened. And yeah, and we need to stop,
you know, fucking nuclear testing, damaging the planet.
Tada, here's every possible thing that we intended for you
to take from this movie. Yeah.
But yeah. Then the, I guess the Jet Jaguar
(42:13):
theme plays. Yeah.
That's what that is. And then it's a song about
Jaguar. That's for sure.
Yeah. And then credits roll.
You did it? Yeah we did it.
Good Lord this movie. This like the last 30 minutes is
literally just a WWE match with month dudes and monster suits.
(42:37):
Like I know that this happens inother films but I don't feel
like it's ever this long. Like it felt like a long time to
have. No ego, no word spoken just yeah
this is almost and you know what, I think about it.
There's a lot of people who talkabout like I don't want all
these human. Parts in my Godzilla movies and
for a long time, I've been like, what fucking Godzilla movies,
(43:00):
were ya'll watching that it was a Non-Stop Monster Jam and I'm
realizing it's fucking this one, because this is one of the most
popular ones to air on TV. It was in all these videos
stores like, and it is like, there's just a huge chunk of
this movie. That is just Monster shit.
So like this is the one that they watched and no other ones.
(43:24):
Yeah. Oh So we got to talk about these
monsters because here's the thing, all four monster suits
are brand-new. Yeah.
Which like we're going to talk abit about the conditions under
which this movie was made, but lacking money was not one of
those problems. They made for brand new monster
(43:47):
suits in in a surprising amount of time for this movie.
We have our final version of Godzilla for the show.
Are this is the suit they're going to use for the next three
movies before everything goes onice for a while.
And honestly, this is kind of the Godzilla suit in my head
when I think of like show a Godzilla.
(44:09):
Yeah, this this kind of Cookie Monster, he kind of look with
the big eyes. That's a little friendlier
looking, you know. This is this is the one I see in
my head and maybe that's just because of my fondness for the
Mecha Godzilla movies but This is Godzilla friend of chill.
Yes, this is Godzilla boxer and wrestler.
(44:31):
Yeah. And I mean, there's just no way
to separate that in my head. Like, when I think of, when I
think in my memories of other earlier movies, I still see this
Godzilla in those movies. So sure.
Well, also because this Godzillawas the most marketed one here.
I feel like, like, when we started getting merchandise for
(44:52):
Godzilla in the states, like you, It was this design.
In fact, I have if I could Sidetrack us for just a minute.
Yeah, I remember growing up. My dad worked for Morgan
Stanley. He did lot of brokerage stuff
and like had co-workers, who often traveled, and one of his
co-workers who was a good friendwent to Japan.
And when he came back, he brought souvenirs for everyone
(45:13):
and for some of their kids, I must have been.
I don't know, three or four, I was a kid and I remember getting
this toy that I unfortunately don't have anymore.
It was this wind-up Godzilla eggthat when you wound it up the
egg would crack open and then Godzilla would walk out.
And I see this face that we saw. This whole film is the face that
was on the story. I remember it.
So vividly. Yeah, because it was just this
(45:34):
little friendly face like like Charlotte said, like this was
Godzilla's era where he was friend to Children.
You know, he was the superhero essentially for the longest
time. There were two images of
Godzilla in pop culture, right? It was the the 80s and 90s
version, right? Which was kind of the the new
hotness at the time. But Was also a very consistent
(45:56):
image of Godzilla through those through that era of filmmaking
and was kind of the serious Godzilla and then there was the
goofy fun old Godzilla. And, and that's always this
suit. That's yeah, those two designs
were the ones you saw on every piece of merchandise, one or the
other and I just love it. It's great.
(46:17):
He's kind of expressive. He looks a little you can
project a lot of different thoughts on to this Godzilla's
face. I think and boy, do they give
you time to do that? Since there is no dialogue.
Yes, they will. And time go on to make some
refinements to the suit. Like the eyes don't work in this
movie, which is why he never blinks, but they do end up
(46:41):
refitting it with like moving eyes and stuff for future
movies. If I remember correctly because
we got Godzilla, we have Jet Jaguar, which is I mean he's an
Ultra Man knockoff but he's a wonderful term and knock off
with a big cheese, ball, grin and horrifying camera, lens eyes
(47:01):
that I never noticed as a child.Oh my God, you can't even tell
really until that last scene when they're talking to him
closely. Yes, go home.
And like they zoom in and I'm like, oh my God.
Yeah, you did not have those show me the mechanics behind
that it's terrifying. Got those like, yeah, little
ringed kind of like floodlight camera lens kind of look, but
(47:25):
Jaguars, really fun. If you have an opportunity, look
up, let me see if I can find a picture of jaguars original
design because Jaguars kind of this unique case, he was
designed as basically, they helda contest for somebody to design
(47:45):
a monster for the new Godzilla. Movie, and a kid won the contest
with with a design called red alone.
If you Google read alone, you will see it.
It's this weird like Dragon winged red, white yellow and
blue thing. Let me see if I can find, you
(48:05):
know, pop this in the chat in a second, but like, oh my God.
Yeah, it's a pretty weird design.
And you can see in the Torso, some of the design that was left
over. Yeah, but yeah, read alone was
so heavily redesigned into Jet Jaguar.
The thing, we know that it's nearly unrecognizable by the end
(48:31):
and for the better because I don't know what the fuck is
going on in that design. Yeah I love I love our wonderful
weird Ultraman, knock off. By the way in those Google
search results you might be seeing jet alone from
Evangelion. Popping up in the designs
because jet alone from Evangelion is very specifically
(48:52):
a reference to Jet Jaguar. Jaguar.
Yeah. And and and write alone so yeah,
that's neat. Little little factoid for you.
But I love Jade Jaguar. He didn't do much other than be,
the world's strangest, robot? Yeah, but I love him.
He does. He does seem a for and he
(49:12):
changes size and he is briefly Godzilla's boyfriend.
First just hammering home that game.
Yeah this is just two sets of boyfriend's doing a wrestling
match. Honestly it's honestly that's
you know it's spurred on as a third set of boyfriend's watches
from the ground. We have digan guy.
Going is back Huygens, and brandnew suit.
(49:36):
I don't know why. I think they were just full of
gas and we're like, fuck it. We got the money because
gaijin's suit, one movie, you gowas in pretty good shape, but
they just read it, they just redid his suit, and you might
notice he's a little bit, Slimmer his head's, a little
redesigned, his sales are a little bit redesigned, it's not
(49:57):
by much, but they built a new guy.
Zoo and then Mega 1 R. Big R big weird Beetle boy that
I mean, like I think the megalonsuit is well made I think the
design is yeah. I don't know about y'all.
I don't think the designs a lot.Yeah he's this he's a big beetle
(50:17):
thing with drill hands and like that's not particularly
interesting but the way he acts as interesting, you know I mean
he flips out all over the place and I loved it and he skips and
Ops and leaps. I mean, I think my fondness for
both Gigan and megalon is probably similar for Charlotte's
(50:37):
reasons which is in Destroy, AllMonsters the game like they were
all plastic. Oh yeah.
Like guy Gaijin did this buzzsawattack where he like dropped you
on his belly and through. Yeah I specifically remember
megalon like using his drill hands to toss stuff like yeah,
that they you know and they did a little bit of that here.
What always is astonishing to meis when megalon flies and His
(50:59):
Hands man. They become one drill instead of
two halves of a drill. It's like how does that work?
Yeah. What's the, what's the
anatomical? Reason they joined together but
like and then can spin it depends.
I just yeah, they can spend together but also independently,
right? Like it's not super thymine.
(51:20):
It make more sense. If they were like vibrating,
right? If they like vibrated and then
it. Hey, now.
Well, that's true. I know given the movie we're
talking about but like, you know, you could have this this
thing that like Twitches back and forth to like tunnel through
dirt. That's all mold.
Do it right there not I don't know.
Fuck look Megan ones my gal a fun ass monster even if the
(51:44):
design is a little but I love him.
A lot of great. Yeah yeah a lot of gray and
brown lot of gray and brown likeyeah you know looking like a lot
earn a modern first person shooter like Graham Brown Unreal
Engine ass motherfucker. But you know, I agree.
I think his personality is great.
Like also again like we tied herbefore, but the bouncing the
yeah nonsensical bouncing like aflea almost maybe that was it
(52:08):
was like he's acting like a flame like a grasshopper because
he's kind of all different kindsof bugs, he's roachy.
He's he's crickety, he's beat Ali, you know.
Yeah. And I also was thinking about
how we're just entering this like design thing for these
monsters. And I say entering, as if it's
not just Toe but you know, like we're their biological things
(52:33):
with like Hardware attached to them.
Yeah, drills and Buzz saws and whatnot, instead of just being
like big lobster. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I mean, yeah, that's that's pretty much over after megalon,
but it is interesting that we got these two together and like
aside from the fact that guy gunshows up in megalodons movie
like fandom can never separate guy going to megalon.
(52:56):
They are they are there? Mates their boyfriends, they are
boyfriends. It's just, they will always be
two. Halves of a whole y'all not to
distract too much but I would play a Godzilla dating Sim where
you could take the monsters. Like give that to me, I would
play the hell out of that. We got us, we gotta pitch it to
(53:17):
the Godzilla Twitter account, right?
Please give me that. Charlotte.
It's time for our favorite game show.
What's the title in Germany? Got this, has been so fun.
Yeah. The increasing shock of both.
The guests and Charlotte as you reveal these titles.
(53:38):
I wish I wish we'd caught on to this earlier honestly and not,
you know, in the last third of the season.
But but yeah, I mean there's there's so for new listeners who
popped in just for this movie and haven't Into the rest of
Castle Bravo these movies have had some pretty unhinged titles
in Germany. Specifically almost always
(54:01):
involving Frankenstein in movie, for some reason, for reasons, I
cannot figure out. Usually, I did find some
answers. Usually, yes, the actual like
rewrites to the movie do just say that like Godzilla is
Frankenstein's monster or something like that.
(54:23):
Yeah, so like Ghidorah the three-headed monster is
Frankenstein's monsters in battle against Ghidorah.
King Kong escapes was King Kong Frankenstein's son, son of
Godzilla was Frankenstein's Frankenstein's monsters hunt.
Godzilla's son. Godzilla vs.
Gigan was Frankenstein's, hell brood.
(54:44):
Are y'all ready for the German title for Godzilla versus mega
Lon? Yes, but as I can.
All right, King Kong demons fromouter space.
Okay, what cocoa breaker? This is not a Frankenstein movie
in Germany. It's a King Kong movie.
(55:05):
I just yeah, there's no King Kong.
Anyway, the Jaguars King Kong. Okay, call Jet Jaguar, King Kong
in the German version. I got nothing.
Y'all. I got nothing.
Is King Tut is Jet Jaguar. Still Frankenstein's, son.
(55:28):
Or man, King Kong this shit. There is a common fan belief
that this is like an old urban legend that in the movie, like
he's King Kong in a suit of armor and know that.
That's it's just they just call him King Kong.
(55:51):
That's literally it. They just named him King Kong.
They could have named him, Mickey Mouse.
It would have been as okay. Yeah.
Also if I may the outer space part like demons, okay, sure.
Fine, whatever their Invaders. But like, from outer space.
That's the op the most opposite from outer space.
As you can get there in the center point, guy can see only
(56:13):
one from outer space and he's working from the for the Seto
pians. So he's on higher, he's a
boyfriend. Fire.
Yeah, it's the logic for these tight.
Yeah. I so I only picked ahead and I
know that like the German title is absurd in every single one of
(56:34):
the showing movies like here out, but I'll have to see what
happens in the 80s because surely some of those have absurd
titles but by that point we're probably getting things more
under control. There was one other, I don't
remember what country it is, butone other Country had like a
really absurd title. It was like Superman and gorgo
(56:56):
like great team up or something like that and and Godzilla is
gorgo and jaguars Superman and Imean that makes more sense than
the guy gets closer so it's is better.
That's for sure. I mean the Germans are still
holding the holding the crown here for and really we that I
got to tell you Germans holding crowns doesn't make me feel
(57:18):
comfortable, so No, sir. Go a completely different more
correct. Yeah.
Yeah. So this movie Man, the behind
the scenes behind the scenes on this movie.
Like, at first glance as I was doing, my research was not that
(57:39):
interesting but you know as I read more and connected some
dots it's started to develop like just how Wild this movie
was To be made. So as I mentioned before
director, June Phuket has back who we've been seeing an
appreciating frequently this season of Castle Bravo Tara, you
(58:01):
tario she, nah Cano. Who is the special effects
supervisor for the last two Godzilla movies versus had or n
versus guy. Again, is Back.
Music is by Ricci Romanov. A who is from Godzilla vs.
Adora. So we've got like, a lot of the
same Talent from the worst one in a long.
Time back with Foo Kedah and like they're kind of their kind
(58:23):
of ripping, right. Like the special effects work in
this movie is good and fun, and the music is kind of fun, and
weird and catchy and it's way it's not very Godzilla doesn't
sound anything like the e. Fukube sound.
We've come accustomed to but youknow, it's a fun score.
Yeah, I mean, the, the check, the car chasing, we talk about
(58:45):
the beginning. Like, has this kind of Jazzy?
Yeah, I don't like like this laughs.
I love this. What, what the hell?
Welcome to the motherfucking 70s.
Here's the, here's the weird thing and I cannot find anything
that that explains or squares away.
These two facts. This is the most Rush.
(59:05):
Godzilla production of all time. This movie was made in three
weeks. Wow, it was made in three weeks
and the screenplay was like a nightmare.
There were the original concept for the screenplay came from
like a long time, like collaborator on the Godzilla
(59:26):
franchise who done a lot of screenplays for these movies.
But he has admitted in interviews.
He basically handed over like a rough concept to Fukuoka and
fuka de wrote the movie himself like scribbling In margins, all
the way up until they got the cameras rolling.
Huh, which is why there's so many if you look at like trivia
(59:49):
stuff, there's so much that comes from just unused ideas for
previous movies, right? Megalon was an unused idea from
a previous movie, Gigan was backjust because he was, you know,
kind of the most recent thing they had to work with, you know,
Jet Jaguar coming from a children's contest.
(01:00:09):
Like there's so much that kind of got thrown together.
It's kind of a miracle that thisis a movie in a lot of ways.
But this was not a cheap movie, like Touhou had money.
I think Touhou had done, well, the last year or two.
I mean, Godzilla vs. Gigan.
Certainly did a lot better than previously, so they had the
(01:00:35):
money to build these for entirely new suits.
A lot of special effects work. The new special effects work is
really good. Good and really expensive.
We noted that there's a lot of stock footage in the movie like
any place where they could just use stock footage instead, they
kind of did even a couple placeswhere it didn't totally match
(01:00:56):
like the claw knocking, the the planes out of the sky because
it's Godzilla when it was supposed to be megalon.
But it's so weird because they had like no time and they used a
lot of stock footage but then everything that they did that
was original. They pour A shitload of money
into and it's this very weird tosee a movie with a ton of budget
(01:01:20):
and a super tight production time.
Usually it's, you know you have the confidence in the money to
give the movie what it needs, oryou were just trying to get some
cheap shit out there to make a little cash and I just don't
know enough about the film industry to understand what
happens at this particular intersection.
(01:01:42):
I mean, who's to say, right? Yeah, it's definitely like it
looks good. Our arguments about the script
and thus, how much sense it makes a side.
Like, it looks good, even with those reuse scenes, like there
was, never a moment was like, this looks.
This hasn't aged well, like it was entertaining.
(01:02:02):
It was well-made. If you, if you like half to use
stock footage like you, you haveso little time to shoot new
footage that you have. To cut footage from other movies
into your movie, to make it work, like that is a crippling
handicap to work with and yet like they make it work.
(01:02:23):
Surprisingly. Well, in the edit, it's not as
good as it would have been if they got to make everything from
scratch. I'm sure.
But I'm that's incredible to me,one.
One popular reason I saw cited. Some places as to why this movie
had such a short production timewas that this was originally
(01:02:45):
intended to be a Jaguar movie that this was originally.
And like, you noted, this was, this is basically Jet Jaguar
movie till the end. And then it was just decided
later in that like, this is not going to work without, you know,
Godzilla's Starpower. So rewrite everything, you know,
we have three weeks left. You know let's let's let's cram
(01:03:07):
this through that almost logically make sense.
Except we know it's not true because the original like Jet
Jaguar contest was specifically for a monster to be in a new
Godzilla movie. So right, you know despite those
stories you know that was never the case.
(01:03:29):
This is not something that had to be Rewritten at the last
minute. I don't know, man.
I just think maybe drugs. I mean, yeah, it's the 70s
because it's reasonable. I there, there's a great little
anecdote of the new Godzilla actor because Haro Nakajima has
retired. And this guy only played
(01:03:51):
Godzilla once. So, I don't even have his name
written down, because he will never return to us but talking
about the suit actors, because they shot this in winter, and it
was so cold out, Jun fukuyama Just bring out whiskey and like,
share whiskey with the suit actors and they'd have a couple
drinks before they got started alittle whiskey to warm you up in
(01:04:11):
the winter. Like okay.
No, I think y'all might have been drunk and explains the
whole laughs. Yeah.
Last 30 minutes of just nonsenseand fighting my God, I mean, I
think, I think this is a bunch of dudes.
I just think they were having fucking fun making this movie
right. I think every actor, every, you
(01:04:32):
know, PA the director, you know, were a little Buzzy and, and
just knocked this fucker out andhad a blast and then moved on
from it. And you got to respect that.
There's I can find no evidence that that's what like, beyond
the fact that few could have shared whiskey with some of the
actors but like, that's that's what I'm choosing to believe if
(01:04:57):
I connect the dots right, I mean, it makes sense.
Yeah. But yeah, so let's talk, let's
talk social and political messaging I have two notes.
One is stop nuking shit and destroying the planet.
Yeah to is the gays are too powerful to be stopped yells.
(01:05:20):
Yep correct. Yeah I don't get all is all
clear as a bell. And if you weren't sure, they
spell it out and last few moments of the film, right?
Right, don't. Yeah.
The the usual kind of like don'tpick wars with other nations and
we're all just one people and don't destroy the planet at this
point. It's kind of watered down, but
he bik. What is through it all?
(01:05:41):
Just that General sense of like optimism and get togetherness,
you know, in a very like watereddown to a child's understanding
of it, because these are at thispoint kids movies, But God a
kids movie where they almost kill the kids.
We can't. Well, I'm telling you that they
shot that kid like and I I stopped for a moment I guess I
(01:06:08):
guess and I wasn't loaded you shoot that child and then they
shoot and it's just a cloud. And I'm like, oh, it's the gas
pistol, I guess. God.
I, we have joked all through this episode about this being
the gay Godzilla movie, but likeit's I cannot say, if this shit
(01:06:32):
is intentional or not, but the Vibes are pretty.
I mean, it takes 30 seconds of looking at Goro and arashi.
Hero. She to be like their boyfriends.
Yeah. Also he wrote like they're both
attractive man. But Hiroshi is a ha my God.
(01:06:54):
Yeah. These two or these two are
cuties their Dapper there. Well, groomed and maintained.
They dress sharp like these two belong on the cover of like
women's health magazines. You know what I mean?
Yeah. And like it it like they're
literally picnicking on a beach together while they're there
platonic, you know. Well, the ones Little Brother
(01:07:17):
Kyle right is, is like just hanging out.
It's like it's just too wholesome to not be true.
And even like the walk at the end, like they might as well
have been holding. Yeah, yeah.
That's nice. It's almost like they wrote the
female lab assistant role to be the love interest and they just
cast a dude instead because otherwise you everything about
the writing of you got the framing.
(01:07:38):
Like I think back to the the Kung Fu girlfriend and Godzilla
vs. Gigan right?
Like It's like you took a roll like that the usual, you know,
female lead and just cast another pretty dude and it
worked it add it just it was funit.
(01:07:58):
Like I also love that we're assuming that if it was written
for a woman at first that that woman also would have been a
badass ass-kicking car driving? Yeah, whatever.
But instead it was this gay dudeand they had a happy family and
it was amazing. It's incredible.
It's it's And I mean, obviously if if they were intending these
(01:08:20):
two to be boyfriend's, if they were intending these two to be
gay, you couldn't have aired that in 1970s Japan, America
anywhere, right? You just couldn't have done
that, right? So like I can see where maybe
the idea intention could have been to do that and they just
have failed it. I can totally see it being
accidental, right? I can see a bunch of dudes
(01:08:40):
little buzz, having a good time shooting this movie and And you
know, man, sometimes when you leave dudes alone in their
natural habitat, they accidentally discover
homosexuality, right? Like, they have no word for it,
but that's what arrives. And I just love that.
I love that for them. This weird movie were Godzilla,
(01:09:05):
and it will Jet Jaguar, and megalon fight, and then both
summon their new boyfriend's to fight.
And what else can I say? A, I mean, also the to see taupe
Ian's, yeah, like I got a Vibe like the two henchmen.
I got a vibe that they also likeit just simply.
It was all guys, being dance, and I think the emperor was was,
(01:09:27):
I'm sorry, man. But the Emperor of see Topia you
cannot tell me. Was this Freight man?
Looking at him, he's 22 Fab. Yeah, that this ridiculous giant
hairy man in his like glittery, silken toga.
Yeah, that's an elder right there and then the drag show
like there's just tremendous gayenergy in this movie.
(01:09:48):
There's no heterosexual explanation for this movie and
and I love it. I love it scam.
Penis. Like I don't think it's a good
movie, but it's a movie. I had a blast watching.
Yeah. Oh, no, it is not a quality
film, but I still had so much fun watching it.
It's the Venom of the Godzilla movie.
(01:10:10):
That's a great way. You know, me and if you know me,
you know, that's the highest praise.
I could give any film efforts camp, this isn't here.
Trying to be high cinema. This is campy Looney Tunes,
giant monster wrestling and it knows exactly what it is.
And it says, if we're gonna do this, if this is what we have
fallen to from The Prestige we used to have, we are going to
(01:10:34):
have a fucking blast in the mud and you cannot help but respect
T' that kind of energy in the face of the difficulties that
like Touhou is going through andthe emotional weight behind the
franchise at this point. You know, the death of tsuburaya
Honda being off in fucking limboyou know working on television
(01:10:58):
shows instead of movies. Yeah.
Yes movie reps. Agreed, we got any final
thoughts about this. Before we wrap, I think
everything that could be, said, has been said, yeah.
I mean, I'm honored to have comeon for this increase, incredibly
gay film. That it was that I was thought
(01:11:20):
of for it. It just has, I've always loved
Godzilla stuff, I'm still clap catching up on the newer ones,
I've seen Godzilla and Destroy All Monsters.
I haven't watched Godzilla. As King Kong yet.
I'm saving it for a special occasion, but like, I live grew
up watching all of these films. Definitely not any kind of
sensible or yeah. With without even probably
(01:11:43):
understanding most of them, but like, it was so fun to go back
to this. The fact that so many of them
are on HBO, Max means, I'm definitely going to go and watch
a bunch of them now. But this film, I just, I'm
still, I have to hammer home, how good the special effects are
a queen, even talked about how they had like this Army.
We mentioned it, But like the Army drive to go fight MegaMan,
(01:12:05):
it's all it's all toy cars. That look good and like you can
barely see the motors like dragging them along like and
there are some shots of real vehicles to.
But like it's just it never doesn't feel like it's act, the
actual Army going to. Yeah, they're about of this is
the Miniatures, quality is really good and they know how to
(01:12:27):
like Over crank. The footage, just enough that
like it's slowed down just enough those little toys, have
that much more weight as they drive across.
Like it's it's just crazy to think of how this stuff was done
in an era before real computer-generated effects.
(01:12:47):
You know, they had to shoot toy cars and just set their frame
rate at a certain way and use a certain kind of lens and you
know, macro lenses and and design the tracks.
We're going to go across in sucha way that they would look
weighty. And that's amazing to think of
its real Artistry. And my other final thought is
(01:13:08):
something we've already mentioned, but I have to repeat
it because it Bears repeating. This has the greatest Godzilla
dropkick Of All Times, beautiful, and you've not seen
if you've not seen this film, see it?
But if you've not seen anything, you have to see that because it
is impossible not to laugh at and it is Glory.
I think like the Dropkick here, And then Godzilla flying and
(01:13:30):
Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and then the victory
dance and Godzilla vs. Monster 0 is, is the like those
are the three, the three horses of the Apocalypse for show a
Godzilla. It's just these truly baffling
moments. That you cannot forget, there is
(01:13:51):
a fourth one coming up that I cannot spoil because Charlotte
deserves to, to get hit with it.It completely fresh.
But yeah, show it show a Godzilla.
Had some truly wild shit going on and I just love it.
I respect it. Well, all that being said, that
