(00:00):
Paul, Welcome to Catholic moneytalk, where we talk about all
things money and finance, and wetry to do it through a lens of
being Catholic, where ourultimate goal is to one day be
in Heaven with the Lord. I amyour host. Paul Scarfone, thank
you for being here today.

(00:21):
Welcome back to Catholic moneytalk. Today, I want to talk
about hope, particularly when wefeel like we're facing just one
challenge after another. Butbefore we do that, let's say a
prayer in the name of the Fatherand of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit. Amen, Heavenly Father.
We thank you for this day. Wethank you for all the ways you
love and bless us, Lord,Lord, we trust that you've got
an awesome plan for us.

(00:44):
Lord, show us the way in all thedifferent situations that we
might find ourselves in. Let ussurrender our plan to yours.
Lord God, we ask this all inJesus name amen, in the name of
the Father and of the Son and ofthe Holy Spirit, Amen. So hope,
right? What are we going to talkabout hope today? Well, how do

(01:08):
we experience hope when we'refaced with challenge after
challenge, right? Am I talkingto the right people? Have you
ever felt like you just couldn'tget a break? We were just at the
beach my family for our vacationlast week, and one of my little
guys, he's five, he's he's inthe the ocean, right where the

(01:29):
waves are kind of breaking, right there, right at the beach.
And he got knocked down by awave, and then another wave
crashed over him. And I'mwatching him, and I'm seeing it,
and I'm like, okay, he canbreathe. Like, is he gonna get
up? Is he gonna get up? And getup? And then I saw another wave
coming, and he probably wasn'tgoing to be able to stand up on
his own, so I reached down, stepped towards him, grabbed his

(01:50):
arm, pulled him up so he couldcatch his breath. Have you ever
felt like that? Right? With lifecircumstances, you get knocked
down over and over and over, just wave after wave, and you
don't have a moment to catchyour breath. And do we feel that
God comes to our aid? Does hereach out? Does he grab our arm?

(02:12):
Does he help us to stand up andcatch our breath?
Or do we think he's forgottenabout us? Or
have we forgotten about him?
Have we forgotten that he'sright there? A few weeks ago, I
was speaking with a friend, andhe was asking for prayers and
encouragement for a particularlychallenging situation that he's

(02:33):
going through right now, righthe's in the midst of this. And
as I started to pray, and I dothis a lot, if someone asked me
for prayer, they want to have aconversation with me. And I just
get a sense that I need to askthe Holy Spirit right now to
inspire me with whatever theLord wants this person to hear,
right So, so this friend, he'sfacing this tough situation. And

(02:56):
I just say, as I start praying,I just ask the Holy Spirit
inspire me with what you wanthim to hear, like put the put
your words on my lips, Lord. Andas we're in our conversation,
all of a sudden, I was struckwith something, a particular
perspective to the situation.

(03:16):
And does this ever happen toyou? Something starts coming out
of your mouth, and you quicklyrealize, like this, this is
good. Like this is so good. It'sdefinitely not from me, right?
I'm not that smart. Iexperienced this all the time,
and many times when this ishappening, I can quickly
identify the Lord is using me.
Thank you, Jesus for puttingyour words on my lips. And most

(03:37):
times I start hearing the wordsthat are coming out of my mouth,
and I realize they aren't onlyfor the person I'm speaking
with, but these are for me.
These are words that I need tolisten to, and I need to ponder
and pray about them. So again, this this situation a few weeks

(04:00):
ago. We're talking about this, Ipray, and all of a sudden this
perspective hits me, and I askhim, I said, What was your
prayer a year ago today? Andhe's like, What do you mean? I
said, think back. Like now, July2024, a year ago, where were you

(04:24):
in life? And he thinks for asecond, he says, oh, a year ago,
I was very worried about one ofmy children. They had had a life
threatening situation. And Isaid to him, well, think a year
past that. So two years ago now,he thinks for a second says,
well, two years ago, we wereworried about a housing
situation. We weren't sure we'dbe living, and we needed to find
a place to live. And then Isaid, So are you still praying

(04:47):
for the housing situation? Areyou still praying for a life
threatening situation for yourchild? He said, No.
So I said, why not? I.
And he smiled a little bit, hesaid, because the Lord answered
those prayers. So then I askedhim to, do you think the Lord

(05:10):
will also answer these prayerstoday? And he said, Yes. And the
whole conversation changed, right? What a difference a year
makes for all of us. I'veexperienced this. I can think
back last year and the yearbefore and the year before. My

(05:31):
prayers have changed, right? Soas I was talking to him, the
perspective changed from one offear and of and of uncertainty
to one of joy and of hope. AndI've also recognized this in my
life. Every year there's a newmountain to climb, a new

(05:52):
challenge that seems to havecome out of nowhere many times,
at least, it feels like thatsometimes. And I'll get finished
with one mountain, and thenthere's a new a new a bigger one
in front of me.
It's something, it ha, it alwayshappens, and
it's usually just when I don'tthink I could take anything

(06:13):
else, right? But God has a wayof strengthening us for the new
challenges that are comingtowards us, and he always has a
plan to get us through it. He'sall about that. He doesn't set
us up for failure. He sets us upfor success. But success is
running to him. Recently, I wasspeaking with another very close

(06:36):
friend,and they've been going through a
lot challenges on many fronts, relationships, works, financial,
spiritual. And I was talkingwith him, and I asked him
permission, if I could remindhim of something that I know he
knows. I told him, there's ahole in our hearts that longs to

(06:56):
be filled. And many people, right. This is for everyone. We
all have a hole in our heartthat longs to be filled. Many
will pursue things of this worldto fill it right, relationships,
money, career, maybe drugs, alcohol, you know, or something
else, right? And sometimes wemight have good things. We might

(07:18):
have a great spouse, great kids,a good job, plenty of money, but
that hole still exists. The onlything that can fill that hole is
God's love, and he is standingat the door of our hearts. He's
constantly knocking. He doesn'tforce himself on us. He just
stands there and knocks. It's upto us to open the door and let

(07:42):
him in. A few months ago, I wasin prayer, and I was praying. I
had my eyes closed. In my mind,I saw I was standing in a room,
and it was an old room with abig wooden door, and I was
feeling a lot of pain. I was infear. I was weeping, and I heard
knocking on the door, and in myheart I knew, I knew I needed to

(08:03):
open that door, and I tried, butI couldn't, I just couldn't open
the door. And I looked down andI saw that the room was filled
with boxes, and they the boxeswere blocking the door from
being open, and these boxesthere were labeled. They had all
different labels on fear, guilt, shame, regret, pride. And as I

(08:25):
started praying for the Lord tocome help me move the boxes,
they slowly started moving outof the room, and little by
little, I was able to open thedoor, and the light grew and
grew through the opening as itso, you know, as the doors
opening, and then all of asudden, it was just filled with
the Lord's presence, right? TheLord's presence filled the room,

(08:46):
and I was immediately at peace.
Immediately I was full of hopeand full of joy. There was an
excitement in me.
And why do I bring the story up?
Because we need to be remindedof this often. I need to be
reminded of this regularly, because that door, it swings on
a hinge, and as much as it'sopen now it could close again.

(09:10):
We need to keep that door openso that the Lord remains with
us, that we can be constantlyliving in His presence. This is
the beauty of our Catholicfaith, right, the gift of the
sacraments, the grace from ourbaptism, the grace from
regularly going to confession, the grace that we receive

(09:34):
through receiving the Lordphysically in the Eucharist, he
constantly comes to us. Heconstantly gives us grace and
strength that we need in everymoment. Yes, the moments change
right. What a difference a yearmakes right? The moments change
every month. Every year, there'sa new set of challenges that

(09:56):
remind us of our need for Godand. And the quicker we get used
to turning to him, the more weexercise our virtues and we run
to the Lord, the quicker he'sable to help us in our
situations, the quicker weexperience peace, hope and joy.
That's why we read stories ofthe saints, and they're going

(10:16):
through terrible things. Theymight be be being tortured on a
rack or being burnt, and they'resinging praises to the Lord in
the midst of that terrible, terrible situation. Why? Because
they got very good at quicklyturning to the Lord in those
tough moments. And he comes inand he helps them, and He gives
them peace, hope and joy, evenwhen others looking at it, it

(10:38):
might not make sense to us.
So as I reminded my friend andas I remind myself, I also
remind you, no matter whatsituation you find yourself in
today, the Lord has an awesomeplan for you. He has a beautiful
new day dawning. Just think backhow your prayers have changed

(11:04):
because he slowly answers them, working all things to the good.
I promise you that no matterwhat you're facing today, the
Lord has a plan. His plan is foryou to be with Him in Heaven,
forever that is happy ever afterwe will get there, but in the

(11:25):
meantime, we get to call out tohim when we need him. We get to
reach out to him when we getknocked down, wave after wave,
we ask him to come help usconquer our fears, to give us
strength for the fight. We openthat door to our hearts, and we
allow Him to fill us with Hispeace. He fills us with hope and
with great joy. I'mgoing to end with this story

(11:50):
about two years ago, two and ahalf years ago, I was dealing
with an incredibly toughsituation, and so I stopped at a
chapel to pray, and I saw one ofmy closest friends, one of my
dearest friends, was there. So Igrabbed him real quick, and I
asked him to pray with me. And Itold him, Look, I feel
exhausted. I feel like I'm onthe ropes. And my prayer, I want

(12:12):
to be able to see how the Lordis working to fix this
situation.
My friend looked at me and said,I don't think that's the right
prayer.
I think the prayer is that youhave to trust that the Lord is
working. And that hit me hard.
Here I am praying that I want tosee what the Lord is doing to

(12:34):
fix my problem. And my friendquickly reminded me, the prayer
is that you can trust that theLord is working. And as he began
to pray over me, he told me,Paul, those ropes, those ropes
you think you're on, thosearen't ropes. Those are the arms
of your heavenly Father. And Iclosed my eyes and I imagined

(12:56):
dealing with the situation I wasin, but the God's arms were
wrapped around me, and my fear,my panic, oh, I was in a panic,
my fear and panic, they meltedaway. I was overwhelmed with
hope and with peace. And whenI'm in a new, turbulent

(13:17):
situation, I quickly try to goto that moment in my mind,
reminding myself that God, nomatter what I'm going through,
hasn't forgotten about me orabandoned me. He's standing
right next to me, ready to pullme up out of the wave when I
can't take anymore, I just needto call to him and ask him to
come. I need to open the door ofmy heart and invite Him in,

(13:42):
then I will experience Hispeace.
So if you're in the midst of atough situation, or maybe you
have a loved one who's goingthrough the ringer right now,
let's take a moment and prayin the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit,Heavenly Father, we are so
grateful for your faithfulnessto us. We have confidence in

(14:06):
your love and your mercy, and weinvite you right now into our
hearts, into this new situation,we surrender it to you, Lord, we
surrender our desired outcome toyou. You know what is best. Your
ways are far above our ways. Wecan't comprehend how beautiful

(14:31):
your plan is, Lord, we ask youto shower down your Holy Spirit.
Just pour your Holy Spirit uponus. Fill us with your grace,
that we can experience your loveand your mercy. Fill us with a
deep trust in you, that you areworking through this, and that
we will see, we will soon seethe dawn of your new day for us,

(14:54):
that you will not leave us. Youwill not abandon us. Lord, let
us feel your arms surrounding usas we walk through this
challenge. We ask you to keepthe evil one far from us, keep
his lies, his fear, hishopelessness, at bay. St
Michael, we ask you to defend usin battle. Saint Joseph, terror

(15:14):
of demons as you defended theHoly Family, we ask you to
intercede to your Son, Jesus, todefend us in this moment. Mary
our Mother, please wrap us inthe mantle of your love.
Intercede to your son for us, weask all this through the Holy
Name of Jesus. Amen, in the nameof the Father and of the Son and

(15:35):
of the Holy Spirit, amen you.
Well, that's what I have for ustoday. It was really on my heart
to talk about this today and tooffer encouragement and a prayer
for anyone who might be goingthrough something challenging.
There is great hope. Think backin your life to those moments

(15:58):
where the Lord shows up. Yourprayers have changed because the
Lord is faithful. He'sconstantly working. He wants you
to run to him. He wants you toopen that door to let him in.
So I encourage you to do that.
Say, Lord, come into my heart.
Lord come into my heart. Iinvite you in. Well, that's what

(16:22):
I have for today, a reminder torun to the Lord, an
encouragement to be filled withhope.
Again, our Lord has a trackrecord of being faithful.
We can count on it.
I hope this was helpful. Thankyou for joining me today.
