July 11th is Saint Benedict ofNursia.
Saint Benedict of Nursia livedbetween 480 and 547 A.D., He and
his twin sister, SaintScholastica, were born to a
Roman nobleman and his wife inNursia, Italy.
He spent his childhood with hisparents in Rome.
As a young man, he found inhimself a strong desire to

escape the trifling things ofthe world and serve God.
He left his family and wealthand settled in the mountainous
region of Subiaco.
After three years living insolitude as a cave-dwelling
hermit, he was asked to lead amonastery in the place of an
abbot who had died.
Benedict did as they asked, buthis way of life was too extreme

for the monks, and they tried topoison him.
He thwarted their evil designsby blessing the poisoned cup,
rendering it ineffective.
Benedict returned to his cave,where news of his sanctity and
miracles began to spread.
Soon, a community of mensurrounded him, wanting to adopt

To house them, Benedictestablished 12 monasteries,

including the world-famous MonteCassino, and gave them a rule of
life to live by, known as theRule of Saint Benedict.
His rule, still observed byBenedictines today, helped form

He is the patron saint of monks,students, farmers, all of
Europe, and more.
He is especially known for hisintercession against poison,
