heart.
Meditation of the Day, anexcerpt from Mere Christianity
(02:26):
by C.S.
Lewis, page 95 Chastity is themost unpopular of the Christian
virtues.
There is no getting away fromit.
The Christian rule is eithermarriage with complete
faithfulness to your partner orelse total abstinence.
Now this is so difficult and socontrary to our instincts that
(02:48):
obviously either Christianity iswrong or our sexual instinct, as
it is now, has gone wrong, oneor the other.
Of course, being a Christian, Ithink it is the instinct which
has gone wrong.
God knows our situation.
He will not judge us as if wehad no difficulties to overcome.
(03:08):
What matters is the sincerityand perseverance of our will to
overcome them.
Before we can be cured, we mustwant to be cured.
Those who really wish for helpwill get it, but for many modern
people, even the wish isdifficult.
We may indeed be sure thatperfect chastity, like perfect
charity, will not be attained byany merely human efforts.
(03:32):
You must ask for God's help.
Even when you have done so, itmay seem to you for a long time
that no help or less help thanyou need is being given.
Never mind.
After each failure, askforgiveness, pick yourself up,
and try again.
Very often, what God first helpsus towards is not the virtue
(03:54):
itself, but just this power ofalways trying again.
For however important chastityor courage or truthfulness or
any other virtue may be, thisprocess trains us in habits of
the soul which are moreimportant still— Scripture verse
(04:14):
of the day.
(04:39):
Isaiah chapter 1 verses 18through 20.
(05:10):
Saint of the Day The Saint ofthe Day for July 14th is St.

Devotion of the Month July isthe month of the Precious Blood.
(07:07):
The month of July traditionallyhonors the most precious blood
of Jesus.
It is the blood of Christ, theLamb of God, which cleanses us
from sin.
Therefore, the Church developeda devotion to Jesus' physical
blood and its mystical power, just as it did for his sacred
heart from which his bloodpoured out on the cross.
The precious blood of Jesuscourses through the Church
(07:28):
spiritually, giving eternal lifeto the body of Christ through
the sacraments.
Many saints had a devotion tothe precious blood of Jesus
Especially St.
Catherine of Siena.
Devotion to the Precious Bloodspread widely through the
preaching of St.
Gaspar del Bufalo, who was a19th century priest and the
founder of the Missionaries ofthe Precious Blood.
(07:50):
This devotion was later approvedand recommended by the Holy See.
The feast day of the MostPrecious Blood of Jesus is July
1st.
A reading from the book ofExodus, chapter 1, verses 8-14
(08:11):
and verse 22.
A new king, who knew nothing ofJoseph, came to power in Egypt.
He said to his subjects, Lookhow numerous and powerful the
people of the children of Israelare growing, more so than we
ourselves.
Come, let us deal shrewdly withthem to stop their increase.
Otherwise, in time of war, theytoo may join our enemies to
(08:34):
fight against us.
And so leave our country.
Accordingly, taskmasters wereset over the children of Israel
to oppress them with forcedlabor.
Thus they had to build forPharaoh the supply cities of
Pithom and Ramses.
Yet the more they wereoppressed, the more they
multiplied and spread.
The Egyptians then dreaded thechildren of Israel and reduced
(08:57):
them to cruel slavery, makinglife bitter for them with hard
work in mortar and brick and allkinds of field work.
the whole cruel fate of slaves.
Pharaoh then commanded all hissubjects, Throw into the river
every boy that is born to theHebrews, but you may let all the
girls live.
(09:18):
The Word of the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm, Psalm 124Our help is in the name of the
Lord.
Had not the Lord been with us,let Israel say, Had not the Lord
been with us when men rose upagainst us, Then would they have
swallowed us alive when theirfury was inflamed against us.
(09:41):
Our help is in the name of theLord.
Then would the waters haveoverwhelmed us.
The torrent would have sweptover us.
Over us then would have sweptthe raging waters.
Blessed be the Lord who did notleave us a prey to their teeth.
Our help is in the name of theLord.
We were rescued like a bird fromthe fowler's snare.
(10:04):
Broken was the snare, and wewere freed.
Our help is in the name of theLord, who made heaven and earth.
Our help is in the name of theLord.
A reading from the Holy Gospelaccording to Matthew, chapter
10, verse 34 through chapter 11,verse 1.
Jesus said to his apostles, Donot think that I have come to
(10:27):
bring peace upon the earth.
I have come to bring not peace, but the sword.
For I have come to set a managainst his father, a daughter
against her mother, and adaughter-in-law against her
mother-in-law, and one's enemieswill be those of his household.
Whoever loves father or mothermore than me is not worthy of
me, and whoever loves son ordaughter more than me is not
(10:50):
worthy of me, and whoever doesnot take up his cross and follow
after me is not worthy of me.
Whoever finds his life will loseit, and whoever loses his life
for my sake will find it.
Whoever receives you receivesme, and whoever receives me
receives the one who sent me.
Whoever receives a prophetbecause he is a prophet will
(11:13):
receive a prophet's reward, andwhoever receives a righteous man
because he is righteous willreceive a righteous man's
reward.
And whoever gives only a cup ofcold water to one of these
little ones to drink because heis a disciple, Amen, I say to
you, he will surely not lose hisreward.
When Jesus finished giving thesecommands to his twelve
(11:35):
disciples, he went away fromthat place to teach and to
preach in their towns.
