Meditation of the Day, anexcerpt from Twelve Steps to
(02:21):
Holiness and Salvation by St.
Alphonsus Liguori, pages 142-143With regard to evil thoughts,
there may be a twofold delusion.
God-fearing souls who havelittle or no gift of discernment
and are inclined to scruplesthink that every wicked thought
that enters their mind is a sin.
This is a mistake, for it is notthe wicked thoughts in
(02:43):
themselves that are sins, butthe yielding or consenting to
them.
The wickedness of mortal sinconsists in the perverse will
that deliberately yields to sinwith a complete knowledge of its
wickedness with full consent.
And therefore, St.
Augustine teaches that when theconsent of the will is absent,
there is no sin.
However much we may be tormentedby temptations, the rebellion of
(03:07):
the senses, or the inordinatemotions of the inferior part of
the soul, as long as there is noconsent, there is no sin.
For the comfort of such anxioussouls, let me suggest a good
rule of conduct that is taughtby all masters in the spiritual
life.
If a person who fears God andhates sin doubts He quotes,
(03:51):
Others, on the contrary, whoseconscience is lax and not well
informed, think that evilthoughts and desires, though
consented to, are not sins, provided they are not followed
by sinful actions.
This error is worse than the onementioned above.
What we may not do, we may notdesire.
Therefore, an evil thought ordesire to which we consent
(04:14):
comprises in itself all thewickedness of an evil deed.
Scripture verse of the day.
Ephesians chapter 1 verses 7through 10.
(04:52):
Saint of the Day The Saint ofthe Day for July 7th is Saint
Killian.
St.
Cillian lived between 640 and689 AD.
He was born to a noble family inIreland.
As a child, he was known for hispiety and love of study, which
led him to the priesthood.
He became a traveling bishop onthe island, and in 686 AD, left
(05:14):
Ireland with eleven companionsto travel throughout Gaul,
present-day France and parts ofGermany, to preach the gospel.
From there, he traveled to Rometo get official sanction from
the Pope to become a missionary.
Once a Obtained, St.
Kilian returned north andsettled in Würzburg as his base
of activity, along with two ofhis original companions.
(05:35):
He began his work evangelizingthe pagans in large parts of
Franconia and Thuringia, northand central Germany.
earning the name Apostle ofFranconia.
St.
Killian converted the Duke ofWürzburg and convinced him to
end his unlawful marriage.
This greatly angered the Duke'swife, who resisted St.
Killian's attempts to converther.
(05:56):
While her husband was away, shehad St.
Killian and his two missionarycompanions beheaded as they were
preaching.
A cathedral was built on thespot of their martyrdom by the
first bishop of Würzburg.
On St.
Killian's feast, his relics, along with those of his two
companions, Devotion of theMonth July is the month of the
(06:27):
Precious Blood.
The month of July traditionallyhonors the most precious blood
of Jesus.
It is the blood of Christ, theLamb of God, which cleanses us
from sin.
Therefore, the Church developeda devotion to Jesus' physical
blood and its mystical power, just as it did for his sacred
heart from which his bloodpoured out on the cross.
(06:47):
The precious blood of Jesuscourses through the Church
spiritually, giving eternal lifeto the body of Christ through
the sacraments.
Many saints had a devotion tothe precious blood of Jesus
Especially St.
Catherine of Siena.
Devotion to the Precious Bloodspread widely through the
preaching of St.
Gaspar del Buffalo, who was a19th century priest and the
(07:09):
founder of the Missionaries ofthe Precious Blood.
This devotion was later approvedand recommended by the Holy See.
The feast day of the MostPrecious Blood of Jesus is July

in this spot, although I did notknow it.
In solemn wonder he cried out,How awesome is this shrine! This
is nothing else but an abode ofGod, and that is the gateway to
heaven.
Early the next morning, Jacobtook the stone that he had put
under his head, set it up as amemorial stone, and poured oil
on top of it.
(08:58):
He called the site Bethel, whereas the former name of the
town had been Luz.
Jacob then made this vow, If Godremains with me to protect me on

clothing to wear, and I comeback safe to my father's house,
the Lord shall be my God.
