Church Fathers.
Saint Clement Page nine.
Think, dear friends, how theLord continually proves to us
that there will be aresurrection to come, of which
he made the Lord Jesus Christthe first fruits by raising him
(02:37):
from the dead.
Contemplate the resurrectionthat is always going on.
Day and night declare theresurrection to us.
The night sinks to sleep and theday rises.
The day departs and the nightcomes on.
Look at the crops, how the grainis sown.
The sower goes out and throws iton the ground, and the scattered
(02:58):
seed, dry and bare when it fellon the ground, is gradually
dissolved.
Then, out of its disintegration, the mighty power of the Lord's
providence raises it up again, and from one seed come many
bearing fruit.
Scripture verse of the day.
Submit yourselves therefore toGod.
(03:19):
Resist the devil, and he willflee from you.
Draw near to God, and he willdraw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you
double minded.
Lament and mourn and weep.
Let your laughter be turned intomourning, and your joy into
dejection.
Humble yourselves before theLord, and he will exalt you.
(03:43):
James chapter four verses seventhrough ten.
Saint of the day.
The saint of the day fornovember twenty fourth is Saint
Columbanus.
Saint Columbanus lived betweenfive forty three and six hundred
fifteen AD.
He was born in West Leinster,Ireland.
He was a noble, well educated, and handsome man who was pursued
(04:05):
by many women.
He sought the advice of a pious, religious woman who advised him
to flee from his temptations forthe sake of his soul, which he
did, leaving the world to becomea monk against the wishes of his
family.
He embraced the monastic lifeand excelled in virtue before
being called by God to be apreacher in foreign lands.
(04:26):
At the age of forty, he left hismonastery with a band of twelve
fellow monks on an apostolicmission to spread the gospel
throughout Europe.
The holiness and zeal ofColumbanus and his companions
combated the laxity of theclergy and the negative
influence of the barbarianinvaders.
Columbanus preferred thesolitude of nature and would
(04:47):
often live withdrawn from othersin a nearby cave, which
attracted followers to imitatehis lifestyle.
He founded and served as abbotof several monasteries known for
their strictness, writing amonastic rule governing their
life which emphasized obedience, silence, poverty, humility, and
chastity.
(05:07):
The rule of Saint Columbanus wasapproved by the Council of Macon
in six hundred twenty seven AD,but was later superseded by the
rule of Saint Benedict.
Saint Columbanus, pray for us.

November is the month of theholy souls.
The Catholic Church dedicatesthe entire month of November to
(05:29):

The holy souls, also called thefaithful departed, are members
of the Church, who await thepurification of their souls
before joining the saints inheaven for all eternity.
Specifically, they are referredto as the church suffering, the
saints in heaven are the churchtriumphant, and the faithful on
(05:50):
earth are the church militant.
The poor souls in purgatorycannot pray for themselves or do
anything to hasten theirentrance into heaven, but we can
and ought to pray for them as anact of charity.
SPEAKER_01 (06:05):
Readings for Holy
Mass for Monday of the thirty
fourth or last week in ordinarytime.
SPEAKER_00 (06:12):
A reading from the
book of the Prophet Daniel,
chapter one verses one throughsix and eight through twenty.
In the third year of the reignof Jehoiakim, King of Judah,
King Nebuchadnezzar of Babyloncame and laid siege to
Jerusalem.
The Lord handed over to himJehoiakim, King of Judah, and
some of the vessels of thetemple of God.
He carried them off to the landof Shinar, and placed the
(06:35):
vessels in the temple treasuryof his God.
The king told Ashpanas, hischief chamberlain, to bring in
some of the children of Israelof royal blood and of the
nobility, young men without anydefect, handsome, intelligent,
and wise, quick to learn, andprudent in judgment, such as
could take their place in theking's palace.
(06:56):
They were to be taught thelanguage and literature of the
Chaldeans.
After three years training theywere to enter the king's
service.
The king allotted them a dailyportion of food and wine from
the royal table.
Among these were men of Judah,Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and
Azariah.
But Daniel was resolved not todefile himself with the king's
(07:18):
food or wine, so he begged thechief chamberlain to spare him
this defilement.
Though God had given Daniel thefavor and sympathy of the chief
chamberlain, he neverthelesssaid to Daniel, I am afraid of
my lord the king.
It is he who allotted your foodand drink.
If he sees that you lookwretched by comparison with the
other young men of your age, youwill endanger my life with the
(07:40):
king.
Then Daniel said to the stewardwhom the chief chamberlain had
put in charge of Daniel,Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
Please test your servants forten days, give us vegetables to
eat and water to drink, then seehow we look in comparison with
the other young men who eat fromthe royal table, and treat your
servants according to what yousee.
(08:01):
He acceded to this request andtested them for ten days.
After ten days they lookedhealthier and better fed than
any of the young men who atefrom the royal table.
So the steward continued to takeaway the food and wine they were
to receive and give themvegetables.
To these four young men God gaveknowledge and proficiency in all
literature and science, and toDaniel the understanding of all
(08:25):
visions and dreams.
At the end of the time the kinghad specified for their
preparation, the chiefchamberlain brought them before
Nebuchadnezzar.
When the king had spoken withall of them, none was found
equal to Daniel, Hananiah,Mishael, and Azariah, and so
they entered the king's service.
In any question of wisdom orprudence which the king put to
(08:46):
them, he found them ten timesbetter than all the magicians
and enchanters in his kingdom.
