Meditation of the Day an excerptfrom The Life of Saint Francis
by Saint Bonaventure, page four.
Now, as he was riding one dayover the plain of Assisi, he met

(02:31):
a leper, whose sudden appearancefilled him with fear and horror,
but forthwith calling to mindthe resolution which he had made
to follow after perfection, andremembering that if he would be
a soldier of Christ, he mustfirst overcome himself.
He dismounted from his horse andwent to meet the leper, that he
might embrace him.

(02:53):
And when the poor man stretchedout his hand to receive an alms,
he kissed it and filled it withmoney.
Having again mounted his horse,he looked around him over the
wide and open plain, but nowherecould he see the leper.
Upon which, being filled withwonder and joy, he began
devoutly to give thanks to God,purposing within himself to

(03:15):
proceed to still greater thingsthan this.

However, when he requested asculpture of the pagan god

Their refusal exposed them asChristians during Diocletian's
fierce persecution againstChristianity.
The men refused to sacrifice tothe pagan gods to save their
lives, and were condemned todeath by being placed alive in

(04:23):
lead caskets and cast into ariver.
The four crowned martyrs areclosely associated with an
earlier group of four soldiers, also killed during the
persecutions of Diocletian twoyears before, who died by being
beaten to death with leadenclubs after refusing to
sacrifice to the godAescalopius.

(04:44):
Because their names wereoriginally unknown, they were
called the Four Crowned Martyrs.
Their relics were firstvenerated in the Roman catacombs
before a basilica was erected intheir honor on Cailean Hill.
The two groups of martyrs, bothcalled the Four Crowned Martyrs,
until their names were afterwarddiscovered, are honored together
