of Christ.
The passion of Christ representsthe misery of our present life,
while the resurrection of Christgives us a brilliant glimpse of
the happiness of the futurelife.
Let us apply ourselvesenergetically in the present
life and hope in the future.
(02:56):
Now is the time for painfulstruggle.
Then will come the recompense.
Those who are lazy aboutcarrying out their work will be
brazenly impudent if they expectthe recompense.

Readings for Holy Mass forThursday of the thirty third
week in ordinary time.
A reading from the first book ofMaccabees, chapter two, verses
fifteen through twenty nine.
The officers of the king incharge of enforcing the apostasy
came to the city of Modin toorganize the sacrifices.
Many of Israel joined them, butMatthias and his sons gathered
(05:36):
in a group apart.
Then the officers of the kingaddressed Mattathias.
You are a leader, an honorableand great man in this city,
supported by sons and kin.
Come now, be the first to obeythe king's command, as all the
Gentiles and the men of Judah, and those who are left in
Jerusalem have done.
Then you and your sons shall benumbered among the king's
(05:57):
friends, and shall be enrichedwith silver and gold and many
gifts.
But Matathias answered in a loudvoice, although all the Gentiles
in the king's realm obey him, sothat each forsakes the religion
of his fathers and consents tothe king's orders, yet I and my
sons and my kin will keep to thecovenant of our fathers.
(06:18):
God forbid that we shouldforsake the law and the
commandments.
We will not obey the words ofthe king, nor depart from our
religion in the slightestdegree.
As he finished saying thesewords, a certain Jew came
forward in the sight of all tooffer sacrifice on the altar in
Modin, according to the king'sorder.
When Matathias saw him, he wasfilled with zeal, his heart was
(06:41):
moved, and his just fury wasaroused.
He sprang forward and killed himupon the altar.
At the same time he also killedthe messenger of the king who
was forcing them to sacrifice, and he tore down the altar.
Thus he showed his zeal for thelaw, just as Phinehas did with
Zimri, son of Salu.
Then Matathias went through thecity shouting, Let everyone who
(07:04):
is zealous for the law and whostands by the covenant follow
after me.
Thereupon he fled to themountains with his sons, leaving
behind in the city all theirpossessions.
Many who sought to liveaccording to righteousness and
religious custom went out intothe desert to settle there.
The word of the LordResponsorial Psalm Psalm fifty.
(07:33):

rising of the sun to itssetting, from Zion perfect in
beauty, God shines forth.
To the upright I will show thesaving power of God.
Gather my faithful ones beforeme, those who have made a
covenant with me by sacrifice, and the heavens proclaim his
(07:55):
justice, for God Himself is thejudge.
To the upright I will show thesaving power of God.
Offer to God praise as yoursacrifice and fulfill your vows
to the Most High, then call uponme in time of distress, I will
rescue you, and you shallglorify me.
(08:15):
To the upright I will show thesaving power of God.

when your enemies will raise apalisade against you, they will
