Quote from Pope St.
Gregory the Great.
Meditation of the Day, anexcerpt from A Year with the

(02:26):
Church Fathers, by St.
Clement of Alexandria, page 13.
Some people who think themselvesnaturally gifted don't want to
touch either philosophy orlogic.
They don't even want to learnnatural science.
They demand bare faith alone, asif they wanted to harvest grapes
right away without putting anywork into the vine.

(02:48):
We must prune, dig, trellis, anddo all the other work.
I think you'll agree the pruningknife, the pickaxe, and the
farmer's tools are necessary forgrowing grapevines, so that they
will produce edible fruit.
And as in farming, so inmedicine.
The one who has learnedsomething is the one who has
practiced the various lessons,so that he can cultivate or

(03:11):
heal.
And here too, I say, you'retruly educated if you bring
everything to bear on the truth, taking what's useful from
geometry, music, grammar, andphilosophy itself, you guard the
faith from assault.
Scripture verse of the day.
Let's pray.

(04:01):
Psalm 100 Saint of the Day TheSaint of the Day for September
11th is Saint Jean-GabrielPourboyer.
Saint Jean-Gabriel Pourboyerlived between 1802 and 1840.
He was one of eight childrenborn to a farming family in

(04:21):
France.
He was a pious child and servedas a model of virtue for his
childhood companions.
He discerned a call to thepriesthood and joined the
Vincentians along with a youngerbrother, with the full support
of his parents.
He served as a seminaryprofessor for many years, and
his sanctity impressed even hissuperiors.
He longed to serve in themissions to China, but his poor

(04:44):
health prevented him, and hisbrother was sent instead.
He prayed and begged to also besent to preach in China and to
suffer martyrdom there.
After his brother died on thevoyage to China, Jean Gabriel
was allowed to take his place inthe mission.
He arrived in China in 1835, andhis labors there were met with

(05:04):
great success.
In 1839, persecutions broke outagainst the Christian
missionaries, and Jean Gabrielwas one of the first to be
arrested.
The events leading to his deathbear a striking resemblance to
the passion and death of Christ.
He was betrayed to theauthorities by one of his new
converts for 30 pieces ofsilver, stripped of his garments

(05:25):
and clothed with rags, bound anddragged from tribunal to
tribunal.
At each trial, he was brutallytreated and tortured.
He was finally condemned todeath.
along with seven other criminalson September 11, 1840.
He was martyred by beingstrangled to death as he hung on
a cross.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
