Quote from Saint Ignatius ofLoyola Quote from Saint Ignatius

(02:05):
of Loyola All the things in thisworld are gifts of God, created
for us to be the means by whichwe can come to know him better,
love him more surely, and servehim more faithfully.
Meditation of the Day, anexcerpt from The End of the
Present World by Fr.
Charles Armengon, p.

(02:25):
276 Without doubt, Jesus Christcould have abolished pain at a
single stroke, and, by virtue ofthe infinite grace of the
redemption, restored man in thestate of complete, unmixed bliss
that he enjoyed in the paradiseof innocence.
He did not so wish.
He judged that, for some, suffering would be a source of

(02:48):
merit, a gain, a source ofglory, and a means of renewal
and triumph, that, for thegreater number, it would be a
necessary expiation.
Scripture verse of the day.

(03:17):
1 Peter 5, verses 6-7 Saint ofthe Day The Saint of the Day for
July 7th is Blessed PopeBenedict XI.

(03:40):
Blessed Pope Benedict XI livedbetween 1240 and 1304.
He was born in Italy with thename Nicholas Bocassini.
At the age of 14, he entered theDominican Order and went on to
become a theology professorbefore being named Master
General of the Order in 1296.
As Master of the Dominicans,Bocassini defended Pope Boniface

(04:02):
VIII when the hostility ofsecular rulers towards the Roman
pontiff grew, especially duringthe Pope's open conflict with
the King of France.
In reward for his loyalty,Bocassini was elevated to
cardinal and then bishop ofOstia.
When Hungary was torn with civilwar, Bocassini was sent there by
the Holy See to restore peace.

(04:22):
When he returned to Rome, thepope's conflict with France
reached its height.
Boniface VIII was seized, beaten, and driven from the
sacred palace by his enemies, while Bocassini was one of only
two cardinals who defended theHoly Father to the end.
After Boniface VIII died,Bocassini was elected in his
place and took the name PopeBenedict XI.

(04:45):
He excommunicated all those whohad taken part in the seizure
and abuse of his predecessorwhile at the same time restoring
peace with the French court.
In this time of tumult, herepaired the damage with
leniency, yet withoutcompromising the Holy See or the
good memory of the previouspope.
His reign was brief.
He died suddenly of a suspectedpoisoning after only eight

(05:07):
months in office.
Blessed Pope Benedict XI was theauthor of a volume of sermons
and commentaries on the Gospelof Matthew, Psalms, Job, and
Revelation.
Blessed Pope Benedict XI, prayfor us.
Readings for Holy Mass forTuesday of the 14th week in
Ordinary Time A reading from thebook of Genesis, chapter 32,

(05:32):
verses 23-33.
In the course of the night,Jacob arose...
The man then said, Let me go,for it is daybreak.

(06:07):
But Jacob said, I will not letyou go until you bless me.
The man asked, What is yourname?
He answered, Jacob.
Then the man said, You shall nolonger be spoken of as Jacob,
but as Israel, because you havecontended with divine and human
beings and have prevailed.
Jacob then asked him, Do tell meyour name, please.

(06:28):
He answered, Why should you wantto know my name?
With that he bade him farewell.
Jacob named the place Peniel, because I have seen God face to
face, he said, yet my life hasbeen spared.
At sunrise, as he left Peniel,Jacob limped along because of
his hip.
That is why to this day thechildren of Israel do not eat

(06:50):
the sciatic muscle that is onthe hip socket, inasmuch as
Jacob's hip socket was struck atthe sciatic muscle.
The Word of the Lord.
In justice I shall behold yourface, O Lord.
Hear, O Lord, a just suit, attend to my outcry, hearken to

(07:12):
my prayer from lips withoutdeceit.
In justice I shall behold yourface, O Lord.
From you let my judgment come, your eyes behold what is right.
Though you test my heart, searching it in the night,
though you try me with fire, youshall find no malice in me.
In justice I shall behold yourface, O Lord.

(07:35):
I call upon you, for you willanswer me, O God.
Incline your ear to me, hear myword.
Show your wondrous mercies, OSavior of those who flee from
their foes.
In justice I shall behold yourface, O Lord.
Hide me in the shadow of yourwings.
I, in justice, shall behold yourface.

(07:57):
On waking I shall be content inyour presence.
In justice I shall behold yourface, O Lord.
A reading from the Holy Gospelaccording to Matthew, chapter 9,
verses 32-38.
A demoniac, who could not speak, was brought to Jesus, and when
the demon was driven out, themute man spoke.

(08:20):
The crowds were amazed and said,Nothing like this has ever been
seen in Israel.
But the Pharisee said, He drivesout demons by the prince of
demons.
Jesus went around to all thetowns and villages, teaching in
their synagogues, proclaimingthe gospel of the kingdom, and
curing every disease andillness.
At the sight of the crowds, hisheart was moved with pity for

(08:42):
them, because they were troubledand abandoned, like sheep
without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,The harvest is abundant, but the
laborers are few.
So ask the master of the harvestto send out laborers for his
harvest.
