Speaker 1 (00:00):
CEOs you should know here from local leaders in the community.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Made possible by Witcom and hess CPAs and Financial Advisors
are featured CEO. This week, we shine the spotlight on
Andrew Schradley, co owner with Charles Mill Marina and Pleasant
Hill Marina that time with a year a lot of
fun there.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Good morning, good morning, Erin.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Thank you for coming in.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
I appreciate you having me.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, I know your dad. I've met your dad, so
I'm excited. And I always start this program the same way.
Maybe somebody just moved to north central Ohio and for
the first time they were hearing Charles Mill Marina, Pleasant
Hill Marina, tell us about you guys. What you guys
offer a ton.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
That's exactly it. Yeah, yeah, really anything to do with boating.
We have two locations here in the Mansfield area, of course,
Charles Mill Marina out here on the east side of Mansfield,
and we also operate Pleasant Hill Marina down in Perrysville,
Ohio as well. So each location we dock about three
hundred boats across each location. That's mostly pontoon boats, some
pontoon house boats. At each of those locations as well,
(01:01):
we offer boat rentals than at Charles Mill. We offer boats,
sails and service, so it's really a on water, full
service marina here at Charles Mill. Pleasant Hill a little
more seasonal. We open up between April and October, so
two very different lakes and really exciting times right now
as we get into summer.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, I was going to say, with that summertime warmth,
you know, starting to arrive and you and I talking about,
you guys really are the place to be. You always
hear people talk about, man, they'll enjoy, you know, their summertime,
and what a better time than on the water, right.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
That's exactly right. Yeah, here in the Mansfield area, a
lot of folks don't necessarily know, Hey, we've got some
great lakes in this area that you can get out on.
Charles Mill. Obviously that's going to be a little more
of a laid back lake, right, we've got nine point
nine horsepower limit. But it really is a very relaxing
place to go, very calm lake if you want to
get out and really be in nature. Great place to
go if you want a little more action, a little
(01:53):
more speed. Pleasant Hill Lakes a way to go, and
on weekends there you get a lot of boats out there.
It's kind of a party. It's a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
There, all right, like the word a lot of fun.
As we're visiting today with Andrew Schradley, co owner Charles
Mill Marina and Pleasant Hill Marina are featured CEO this week,
give us a little history. How long I have both
been around here?
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yeah, so we've been in business. My dad and grandfather
started the business in nineteen seventy two, starting at Marina's
at Charles Mill. We moved in nineteen eighty six, about
a year before I was born, actually, so we've been
out there for almost forty years now. In that time,
we also have a lot of long term employees who've
come along with us, So we have a lot of
staff that have been with us that entire time. We
(02:35):
began at Pleasant Hill in the early nineties and have
been going ever since. So it's been a really nice
business to be in. Being in a family business gives
you the opportunity to really be with your family, and
over the years we've had almost every member of our family.
My sister was in it, my mom's been in it,
grandparents have been in it, so really a lot of
hands have touched it and it's really cool to see
(02:56):
where we've come from been able to grow the business
into what it is today.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, I was going to say definitely family ties for you.
You mentioned across the board how long have you kind
of been involved with your co owner now, but how
long have you been involved?
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Yeah, so at various points in my career, I've been involved.
So I've been our sales manager for a couple of years.
I did that for three years out of college and
then I actually took a break. It took about a
ten year break and I went and worked in the
corporate world and enjoyed that, but I found that I
really just didn't like sitting behind a computer that much.
And I think with COVID, I think it really reinforced that.
(03:29):
And about five years ago I came back into the
business as one of the co owners. My dad was
looking to not retire but transition a little bit, and
so that's really what we've been doing is between him
and I just managing these businesses together, along with a
really great staff that we have at the marina.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Well, as we talk about staff and we are visiting
and learning this morning all about Andrew Schradley, co owner,
Charles mill Marina and pleasant Hill Marina again. He is
our featured CEO this week. I'm sure as you get
into the what we call the heart of summer, you
guys are a busy, busy place, ballpark for us. How
many staff members in total you can separate and put
(04:07):
them together, but kind of help you guys run.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah, So this time year, everybody's getting boats ready for
the water. We've got a lot of things moving around,
a lot of moving pieces. So we do have a
lot of folks who are working with us right now,
about forty people across our two locations, and that's probably
the high point for the year. As we get into
the summer, we don't have the need as much for
drivers and things of that nature as we're getting boats
out in the winter time. We have about fifteen permanent
(04:31):
year round employees, but we do scale that up so
getting dock crew here in the summer. Just a really
nice variety of people we have at the marina.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
How far do people come from to see you guys?
We think about the greater North central Ohio area, but
I'm sure people come from much further.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Oh yeah, of course. Yeah, So it really depends on
what we're selling for boat sails. Our market is I
would say around sixty miles around our marina. However, we
did just sell a boat to North Carolina, So we
take boats all over the country. If people want to
buy them and have us take them there, pretty rare
when that happens. So the majority of our market is
the Mansfield area, but we also sell boats in the Cleveland,
(05:07):
Columbus Akron as well. For our rental boats, we see
people coming from all over the country. Now, of course
they're probably not coming specifically to rent a boat from us,
but if they're taking a vacation in the area, we
really do have a pretty big poll on.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
That in terms of somebody coming out for a day.
You know, you talked about Pontoon rental. How does all
let's go there next? As we're talking with Andrew Shraley
co owner Charles will Morena Pleasant Hill Marina, you can
be really busy. So do they need to reach out
in advance? Can they just show up walk us through
that a lot?
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Yeah, So if you've never boted before and you might
feel like, hey, that's something I want to do, but
I don't necessarily know how to get started with that,
a lot of folks will come out in rent a
boat first. They want to see if, hey, if this
is something that the boating lifestyle is right for them.
So at either of our locations you can come out
and we can get you on the water that day.
You're also welcome to make reservations on our website. We
(05:59):
always encourage that, especially weekends in the summer, that's our
most popular time of year. You can actually make the
reservations on our website and as you come out, even
if you've never driven a boat before, if you don't
know anything about boating, we can give you a test
and then we have an experienced crew that takes you
out on the boat, shows you how to use everything.
You feel very comfortable doing it. All of our boats
(06:21):
are very safe and we select them for being easy
to drive and just being very relaxing and comfortable and
easy to use.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
All right, well, that's great, terrific. And the website Charlesmilmarina
dot com. I was on there and just all kinds
of information you mentioned. If you're looking for a boat,
just everything we're talking about, you can find that at
your website exactly.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
So we keep all of our new boats used boats
listed on there as well. You can book rental boats
on there, docking informations on there. As we get into
the fall, we start looking more at the service side,
so we have all that information on there. And one
of the most popular pieces of our website is our webcams.
We have two live webcams always on at Charles Melmorna
and Pleasant Hill. So if you want to just check
(07:01):
in on the lake, go to our website, find the
marina webcams and just see what's going on in the lake.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
All right, see what's going on at the lake to
the website Charlesmelmarina dot com. Great conversation this morning. Our
featured CEO this week is Andrew Shraley, co owner with
Charles Mill Marina and Pleasant Hill Marina. All right, we'll
get back to work in a moment. Want to step away.
We've talked a lot of this has family ties for you,
so people may be wondering where were you born, in
(07:29):
high school and all of that, So tell us a
little bit more about yourself.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, sure, So I was born in Lexington, Ohio and
really raised up there as well, so deep ties to
the Mansfield area here. Graduated high school in two thousand
and five, and then I went to Ohio State for
four years, So from two thousand and five to two
thousand and nine, I got a degree in business management
there and ever since just really enjoyed being in this area,
(07:53):
loving kind of what this area has to offer.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
So you graduate from lex then yes, okay, perfect, all right,
so you went off to you mentioned you came back.
But growing up, did you know you know dad, grandfather,
you know, you mentioned sister mom, a lot, everybody kind
of in the family has been involved. Did you feel
like as at the time growing up that you would
kind of be in the what you would call the
family business.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
You're so close to it when you're growing up to it,
and you really wear every hat in the business kind
of coming on up. My first job at the marina
was cutting paper, and every inch I cut, I got
a nickel. So it's something that you start in that
world and that's kind of what you know. And it
wasn't something necessarily where I knew exactly where I was
going to go with it, but it's certainly been something
(08:34):
that's been rewarding to be a part of. And like
I said, I did take about a ten year break
and that gave me some perspective on the benefits of
being in a small business and being in a family
owned business just much more personal. You feel much more
connected to your people and everything that you have going
on in your.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Business, visiting and learning this morning about Andrew Shraley, co
owner and our featured CEO this week with Charles Mill
Marina and Pleasant Hill Marina. So I don't know if
your married kids tell us a little more about Andrew.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Yeah. Yeah, so I'm married and I have a three
and a half year old son, and it was really fun.
Yesterday we actually got out for the first time ever
and went fishing with him. He had never been fishing before.
He got a fishing pole this past winter and we've
been learning in the driveway how to cast and throw it,
so we were able to get out yesterday for the
first time. He was very excited to get out, so
he maybe a fourth generation there at some point. He
(09:27):
seems to really be into boating and just being outside.
So it's been a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
So what do you like to do in your spare time?
You know, I'm sure hot on the water right orch
is you know something you've been doing for many, many years.
But how about hobbies and different things you like to do?
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Yeah, so of course boating, that's something we have easy
access to and able to get out in the water.
Just to be able to get out there, we love that.
But outside of that, I'm a runner, something I've done
for a long time, and so just that's something that
keeps me active, keeps me busy. Also enjoyed biking as well,
and then just spending time with friends and family traveling
to really like to get out and just kind of
(10:02):
see the world. So been a fun ride.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
All right, terrific Again, we'll keep him for a few
more minutes our featured conversation again learning about Andrew Shradley
his business. He's co owner of Charles Mill Marina and
Pleasant Hill Marina. As we get back to work, and
I was on your website you mentioned, you know, all
the different things you offer from you know, pontoon boats.
I was looking, you know, people when they stopped by
(10:26):
you mentioned service. I'm sure what parts, accessories, bait. Well,
I was even reading clothing gifts. You guys have a ton,
so explain a little more there, that's it.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Yeah, So we are a full service marina. So it's
not just boats. We have an entire parts and accessories section.
We also have a ton of anything you really need
on the water, so safety equipment, we've got you know, snacks,
we've got beverages inside the marina. Really we're trying to
cater for anything that you need for a day on
the lake should be within the four walls of the marina,
and we really do a great job of stocking everything
(10:57):
that's really popular and very very good prices, something we
take a lot of pride in. Now.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
I don't know if you can even bulpark how many
people come to see you either location in a yearly basis,
because you mentioned you have room for better than three hundred,
you know, pontoon boats and all of that. Do you
have any yearly numbers?
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Yeah, every year is a little bit different. We're very
busy during COVID, to a point where you can almost
say we were too busy. It was kind of overwhelming
the amount of people who wanted to get out in
the water. And in the year since now we've kind
of come back to a little bit of normal. But
the nice thing is is we use those COVID years
to really reinvest in our business, to improve our facilities.
We've expanded docking and we've been able to add more
(11:37):
dock store Marina. So at Charles Mill we do dock
three hundred and twenty five boats, that includes seventy pontoon
house boats. That's more than any lake in the state
of Ohio. So it's a very really cool atmosphere that
we have out there. In terms of rentals, we typically
see about one thousand rental customers at each of our
locations every year, so it's something that keeps us very busy,
(11:59):
especially in the summer months like right now as we
start moving through that. So we also see a lot
of area lakes as well. So for folks who are
out there on like a Cinnamon Lake, Candlewood Lake, Holiday
lakes that are within that sixty mile radius, a lot
of those folks have us do the service on their boats.
So it keeps us on the road in the fall
as we go around and do service on each of
these various lakes.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
One thing I like about this program people know, you know,
who have lived here for a long time. They know
about Charles Mil Marine, they know about Pleasant Hill Marina,
but they don't maybe know what all you guys do
because it is a lot You mentioned all the people
that come see you in a great conversation before I
let him go. Two things quickly. Andrew Schradley, co owner
again with Charles Mill Marina and Pleasant Hill Marina. I
(12:40):
always leave this segment to talk about what you're proud about.
A lot of people who run organizations businesses, they're proud
of their staff and all that you guys offer. And
I can tell that, you know, just having a conversation
with you, but it kind of sounds like you guys
have continued to grow and expand, and you mentioned and
all this has family ties. What are you kind of
proud about when you talk about your organization?
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Yeah? Ye, So in the last couple of years, we've
really been honored to get some national recognition from the industry.
So we have recently been named a Top twenty dealership
in North America, and that's something that is just a
pretty prestigious award. We're very proud of that. That comes
with a lot of just making sure that we are
adhering to the very best possible practices, that we're treating
(13:21):
our customers exactly the way that they want to be treated.
We've been around for fifty years and there's always room
for improvement within our business. And what I really really
am proud of is the way that our staff has
really embraced we always want to be a little bit better.
We realize that we're not always perfect, but we always
want to be a little bit better. And every year
we're just iterating and we're just making small improvements, making
(13:45):
sure we're reinvesting in our business and ourselves so that
way we can serve the voting public as well as.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Possible good stuff. Well, before I let you go, I
mentioned this earlier, but I'd like you to leave our
listeners with some information if they were interested in, you know,
maybe a rent. Maybe they hey, I want to put
my boat, you know out there, Pleasant Hill Marina, Charles
Mill Marina. Throw out the website phone number, how as
I would say, somebody could get the ball rolling with sure.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Yeah, see twenty four to seven. Our website's there, Charlesmilmarina
dot com and Aaron. As you've said, a lot of
information that's on there. But if you ever have questions,
you can call or text us phone numbers four one, nine, three, six, eight, five, nine,
five to one and that can come in and we'll
make sure we always get back with you. We love
talking boats, We love answering questions about things. So if
you're ever have anything that you want to talk through,
(14:33):
just give us a call, text us. We're happy to
go through that.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Could you give that number one more time?
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Absolutely? Four to one, nine three six eight five nine
five one.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
And I did see that on your website. But you
getting recognized nationally, I mean, you know, I've met your
dad before, but that that is a tremendous honor. Think
about everybody across the country in a spotlight would you
say top twenty? Yeah, that you guys have to be.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Really proud of that. Yeah, there's thousands of dealers, yeah, there,
And it's something that it's not just based on the
number of boats that we sell. It's based on the
quality of the experience that our customers have. It's based
on customer satisfaction scores that we receive, and that's really
a testament to the quality of people that we have
making sure when a boat goes out the door that
it's done the way it should be. And then if
(15:14):
there are times where we need to go act and
fix something up, we stand behind our product. We make
sure it gets done right.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Great stuff, great conversation this morning. Again for more information,
you can go to Charlesmillmarina dot com. Great conversation this
morning learning about Charles Mill Marina and Pleasant Hill Marina
with one of their co owners who's with us in studio,
Andrew Shradley. Well, it was great to learn the whole story.
Role in strong Congratulations to you, the family and everybody,
(15:41):
and we wish you guys continued success. Thanks for being
here to you.
