(00:00):
The CEO you should know, broughtto you by Robie Foster Miller Eric Insurance.
This week, CEO do Want aPett CEO of the Ohio District five
Area Agency on Aging, Do wanta good morning, Good morning, thank
you, good to see you inthe studio today. It's great to be
here, absolutely here. We arein the month of May, and we're
(00:24):
going to shine the spotlight locally onthe Area Agency on Aging. So let's
begin at the top, and Ido this with every CEO I talk to.
If somebody doesn't know or they justmove to this area, tell us
about your agency. So the AreaAgency on Aging. I think a lot
of people think that we serve theaging, the oldest of our population,
(00:46):
and we don't we serve anybody, even children. So I think that's one
of the things that people don't understand. We begin aging when we're born,
and so we have a lot ofprograms where we serve caregivers. We actually
do case management for the under sixty. Our youngest client now is about two
years old, whom we case manage. This individual is getting their services in
(01:10):
the home. So I think themost important thing for anybody to know is
not to be confused by the titleaging to remember that we are all aging
and anybody that needs services in supportsor any kind of assistance should just come
and see us. When you talkabout services, I'm sure there are too
many to list. I would assumethat you offer. Well, that's true,
there's an awful lot of them.Well, as we find out about
(01:34):
the Area Agency on Aging. Ido want to patton the CEO. You
should know how long have you beenCEO. I've been CEO since two thousand
and six. Okay, how longhave you been with your organization since then
or before before? I've been theresince nineteen ninety four, so going on
about twenty nine years this year.Sounds like you have having a great time
(01:56):
with a smile on your face.I love it. Well we hear Ohio
District five Area Agency on Aging. How I was called the swath? How
big is the area you cover? So we are one of twelve area agencies
in the state of Ohio. Weserve nine counties and those counties are Ashland,
Crawford, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, Knox, here On
(02:20):
and wyan Dot counties. Okay,so a lot here in the north central
Ohio area. Is it all fromone location. How does it work?
Yeah, our corporate offices obviously arehere in Richland County, Ontario, twenty
one thirty one Park Avenue West. But I like to tell individuals that while
bat's where we do a lot ofthe administrative work, our people are out
(02:43):
in all of our nine counties servingindividuals. So we have a lot of
remote staff who are primarily in thefield in the homes of the people that
we serve. All Right, terrificthis morning to hear the voice of Dawana
Patton, this week's CEO. Youshould know Ohio District five area on aging.
She is the CEO. Well, let's step away from work and find
(03:04):
out a little about to Wanna Patton. Let's go back to the beginning if
you would tell us where was toWanna Patton born. So, I was
actually born in Marion County, butwas raised in vi Hellya, Ohio,
which is in Union County, witha wonderful family surrounded by me. We
owned a grocery store, the familydid, and so I started working at
(03:25):
a very young age serving people inthat business. And then from there I
ended up going to school in Marionat Marion Technical College and started my career
there working in employment and training, nonprofit in human resources, and then from
there I ended up here at theArea Agency on Aging and couldn't be more
(03:46):
excited about where my career has takenme. All right, Terrific. Now
I didn't hear where'd you go tohigh school? Oh? I went to
high school at North Union? Okay? All right, North Union High School?
Finding all about Duana Patton this morning? And did you know growing up,
I know you mentioned family grocery store. Did you know what I call
what line of work you wanted togo into, and how you kind of
(04:08):
got down this path? So Iprobably always thought that I would be in
the grocery store business. But obviously, you know, over the years that
industry had changed dramatically, going fromyou know, small family owned grocery stores
and communities to more bigger box stores. But I knew, I always knew
in my heart that I would bein the people business, that I would
(04:30):
be serving people in some capacity.Didn't know exactly what that would look like,
but am grateful that my career pathtook me in that direction. All
right, terrific, Let's get backto the Area Agency on a Ding,
Ohio district five. The CEO isjoining us in studio Dawana Patton. You
mentioned so many counties and so manypeople. Do you have a ballpark number
(04:51):
of staff that you guys have rightnow? Yeah, we go about one
hundred and twenty employees give or takea little, but it does. It
takes about one hundred tw people. Now, my next question would be,
and I recently had a chat withNicole Williams from the Your Agency on Aging
and she kind of informed me aboutsome things you guys do that I didn't
know about. And I know ifthere's a project you might need some help
(05:14):
with in the house and things likethat. Could you explain some really cool
things your organization does that people probablydon't know about. Great, Well,
I'm sure that Nicole talked about ourhome modification program and it is probably one
of the most sought after types ofprograms because people want to stay home,
and you know, finding a placethat might be conducive to aging is a
(05:35):
little challenging with the housing stock theway that it is. So we're able
to go in and modify a bathroomso that it is safe for them and
appropriate for them to live in home. A lot of times we'll put ramps
in. So home modifications are reallyimportant to ensuring that an individual can maintain
that safety and independence in the homethat maybe they've lived in for forty fifty
(05:58):
years. In addition to that,we do a lot of things with individuals
who are just trying to navigate thelong term care system or just trying to
figure out how best to stay athome or to even keep their loved one
at home. So sometimes it's justa conversation. They come into our office,
they sit down, they talk toa well informed staff member and just
(06:18):
understand what's available to them. Shealso mentioned, and I believe it was
some sort of a program that youknow, is you maybe are going into
retirement years and you're on a fixedincome. You got to watch your budget.
I think there are people that canhelp in those that realm right,
yep, that's those are our navigatorsat the front desk. They actually we
(06:41):
have a BC grant, which isa Benefits Enrollment Center grant which allows our
individuals the time and the capacity tohelp people understand I'm getting ready to go
into retirement, what is it Ineed to be thinking about, or you
know, my parents are aging, what is it I need to think about
in order to care for them.Yeah's terrific to learn about the services that
(07:03):
are provided locally. With the OhioDistrict five Area Agency on Aging joining us
in studio. This week's CEO youshould know is their CEO, Dwanna Patton.
All right, so we've learned alot about you, but let's find
out a little bit more. Wefound from Marion County major way here to
the Mansfoot area, Richland County.I don't know married kids, if you
(07:25):
would tell us a bit more aboutDuana Patton and the family. All right,
So I am married. My husbandand I will celebrate thirty four years
this week. I hope he's goingto be listening and we'll remember that.
And we have two twin daughters. One lives here locally. She works in
the long term care system and enjoysthat, and I'm very proud of the
(07:46):
fact that that's where she's found herplace. Our other daughter lives in Florida
with her husband and our new grandson, who just turned eight months old.
I'm very proud of her. She'sa pharmacist. Her husband's construction engineer,
and when they're not working, theytake care of my grandson. Right,
great sounds like a big week inthe household. Then huh anniversary birthdays?
(08:09):
Great? Now, I know beinga CEO is a full time course job.
A lot of things happening when youget time away. I'm sure there's
travel to Florida. I'm sure thisis coming. But talk of what you
like to do in your spare time. Do you have any hobbies? Yeah,
well, you're right, my hobbieschanged about eight months ago. And
any spare time that I get,I am flying down to Florida to spend
(08:31):
time with the grandson. But whenI'm here, my husband and I enjoy
boning and fishing up on Lake Erie, and you know, just sometimes just
sitting back and relaxing. All right, Yeah, that's that's that's a great
thing to do. Well. BeforeI wrap it up, this morning,
been a great conversation with I WannaPatton, CEO Ohio District five Area Agency
on aging this week's CEO you shouldknow? Is there anything people should know
(08:54):
that we haven't discussed about your organizationbecause we talked about so many services and
I'm sure we haven't come close tolisting all of them here in our chat
to supporting good. Is there anythingimportant you want listeners to know about you
guys. So I think the thingthat I always like everybody to know,
if I have the chance to share, is that people should not think that
(09:16):
they're not eligible for our services, our programs because of age or income.
We have so many programs, somany different funding sources. I always say
that if there is a question aboutaging, caregiving, maintaining independence at home,
call us at the Area Agency orstop by. All right, you
(09:37):
mentioned in Ontario the former Hawkins locationthere, Park Avenue West. How about
website, phone number? How couldthey reach out if they want to kind
of get the ball rolling and getsome more information. So stopping by our
office at twenty one thirty one ParkAvenue West. They're in Ontario, give
us a call at four one ninefive two four four one four four or
