Eric Thiel is the CEO of Cabinet Restylers in Ashland.  The company got started back Eric's father back in the late 1960's (1967). the CEO of Cabinet Restylers and we're going to learn
all about him and the company this morning. First of all,

good morning, thanks for coming in today.

Well, hey, thanks for having me in.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Yeah, so I've heard the name, but I don't know
a lot about your business. I know a lot of
people maybe for the first time they're hearing about Cabinet Restylers.
So let's begin and you know, kind of tell us
what you guys do.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Well, you know, I'll give you a little background. We
my dad actually started a company back in nineteen sixty
seven and we were actually in the carpet drapery business,
and in the seventies we got into manufacturing and that's
kind of when Cabinet Restylers started.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
At that point in time.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
And so we manufacture kitchen cabinets and cabinet doors and
things of that nature.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
And know that we ship all over the.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Place, and so you mentioned you send things all over
the place. What is kind of the coverage.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Here, So we ship from Seattle to Maine, Florida, California.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
We ship across the whole United.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
States, all points in between.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Huh, all points in betrayal.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
That's amazing Ashland sending things everywhere.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Huh.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
So, as we learned a little bit about the business
you mentioned started back in the sixties, so with your father.
How many locations do you guys have?

Speaker 3 (01:28):
So right now we've got two manufacturing facilities in Ashland.
We're in the process of expanding. We're building another it's
between fifty and sixty thousand square feet another facility, so
we'll have three facilities in Ashland probably that should be
done by February of next year.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
I would assume then things are going well when I
hear expansion, right, things are.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Going extremely well.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
We've got a lot of great people, a lot of
good things happen, a lot of new product lines coming along.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
So yeah, things are just really really growing.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
At the voice you hear this morning is Eric Thiel.
He's our featured CEO this week again. Eric Thiel is
the CEO of Cabinet Reestylers. Where are you guys at
in Ashland?

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Down on h Street and we're also on Miller Street
in Ashland.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Now in terms of products are they is everything like
made in Ashland? How does it work?

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Can you explain?

Speaker 3 (02:18):
We manufacture the we manufacture the cabinet doors, We manufacture
the cabinets, the moltings. We manufacture everything there.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Right in Ashley, right and Ashville and then you send
it from there.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
We ship it from there every day.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Okay, all right? Well, is there a busier time for
your industry and what you do in terms of like
you and I are talking and you know we're kind
of in mid to late August. Is there a certain
time that's busier than others?

Speaker 3 (02:43):
I would say June July or probably fall off about
ten percent and the rest of the year stays pretty
much steady, h you know, of course, last two weeks
of December because the holidays, and first week of January
of course the holiday.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
But other than that, it's pretty steady year round.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Now, in terms of employees, how many do you guys have?

Speaker 2 (03:03):
We employee between seventy and eighty people.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Okay, are you guys good staff wise right now? Hiring
and need to hire anybody?

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah? Actually we are hiring right now because of the
new building and we've got a couple of new product
lines coming on, so we are hiring for those areas.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Okay, well, while we're talking about that, if somebody is interested,
they got a great skill set, they'd love to work
for you, how do they get the ball roll in them?

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Assuming website website Cabinet Restylers dot com is where they
would go. And like I say, we've got a lot
of great things for the employees and their families and
that we've got going on. And that's really what is
tribue to our success is really our employees.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
You know, there's no one of us.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
It's like I always tell them every day, you know,
if I don't happen to come into work, guess what
everything gets made. If one of them don't come into work,
somebody else has to cover for them.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
So they're truly the heartbeat of our company.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
You know.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
And I hear CEOs talking, you know and chatting with
you and it's like, you know, you make a great product,
you need great people to do.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
That, right Absolutely, it's it's just the people.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
We are chatting today with Eric Theel again our featured
CEO this week. Again. Eric Theel is the CEO of
Cabinet Restylers in Ashland, could you give us an example
where somebody you know may have you know, they may
have sold a product that you guys are making and
sending across the country. Any example you would have for.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Example, like you've got some companies in I'll just say,
you know, there's Cabinet Experts out of Cleveland. We private
label for different companies, so we build it to their specs.
Down in the Tennessee through the North Carolina areas, we
do a private label program for some of the home
depots in their high end custom lines. So just to

(04:48):
I'm sure they've seen it somewhere under a different name.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Okay, So you guys do a lot of great work
all across the country, and we're learning again about cabinet
restylers based in Ashland. You know you mentioned going to
be a third location, but sending things all across the country.
Eric Thiel is our guests this morning. So let's learn
a little bit about you as we step away from work,
and we found out, you know, the family business, your

(05:12):
father's starting things. But let's start at the beginning. People
maybe wondering, you know, where were you born, where'd you
go to high school? If you would tell us a
bit about yourself.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
I was born in Ashland and raised there, went to
Ashland High School.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Arrow.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Yep, I'm an Arrow and you know, married thirty eight
years and married, had two children, three grandkids, and spend
a lot of my time, you know, just just family.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
All right. Any hobbies you have when you're when you're
away from work, whether it's traveling, golfing and anything.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
I do a lot of cycling okay, nice, yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Yeah, been a good summer for that for you.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
This year actually been a great summer.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Yeah, good, Yeah, terrific. I know it's been hot and
we've hobbed. Yeah, okay, all right, love it well. Eric,
while I have you, I just want to bring us up.
You mentioned your father starting the company. Did you know,
you know, growing up going to high school, did you
know you would get into this line of work, as
you would say, the family business where there are other aspirations,
you know, out of high school, you.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Know, I you know, it's kind of funny.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
I was just talking to my mom.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
My dad passed away about a year ago, and you know,
I can still remember being very young. My dad wore
suit every day and I just couldn't wait to dress
up to go to work.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
I couldn't wait to do that.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
You know, I always wanted to get into sales, and
so I was kind of my aspiration. I wanted to
do that, and so you know I got into the business.
I've done just about everything. You know, I can build cabins,
install cabinets, you know, I can do about anything we
do there.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
So I grew up in the business.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
And I just been very fortunate to have an opportunity
you know, placed in front of me. Is what I'm
so fortunate about, and all of us there is you know,
what my parents sacrifice to have given us the opportunity.

Speaker 1 (06:51):

You know you're dad would be so proud of you.
You mentioned that, you know, starting this business in the sixties,
where you guys are now growing another location, right, I
mean that has to just bring a smile to everybody
in the family, right, Yeah, it doesn't.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
We just had a groundbreaking ceremony in that and we
were talking there at the groundbreaking ceremony. You know, back
in the sixties, you know, my dad took a second
mortgage out on their house for twenty five hundred dollars.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
My mom didn't know, and that's like that was a
no no.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Back then, you didn't touch your mortgage and so you know,
they went through a lot to just to get it started,
you know, and sacrificed a lot.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Again, we're talking with Eric Thel for a few more
minutes again learning about his company, and that is Cabinet
Reestylers in Ashland. So we've talked about a lot of
things that you guys make in terms you know of
cabinets and things like that. Can I ask you in
terms of production? Do you know how much you know
you're making a year or a month a week? I

(07:55):
don't know if you have anything. I know you and
I we were chatting before we turn the microphones on.
I think people might be curious if you just talk
about it.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
You know, we produce between five and seven thousand just
like cabinet doors a week. You know, a lot of cabs,
a lot of moldings, you know, so I couldn't even
tell you how many parts we produce a week, but
just cabinet doors alone, five to seven thousand cabinet doors
a week and with different parts of that it's probably
you know, in the neighborhood of probably producing twenty five

(08:23):
thousand parts a week.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Yeah, I think people enjoy learning about companies and you
know they hear that, you know, you make cabinets, doors
and all this and that and how much you make.
And I'm sure for you, you know, walking on the
you know, walking around the company and seeing how you know,
how things move along, you know nice and all that.
It has to be really cool, right to see everything
in operation.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Well it is. And you know what the cool thing is.
You know, I walk the floor every day.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
I know everybody and their families and what's going on, and.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
I've done their jobs.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
So you know, my my most comfortable place is on
the floor, you know. I like walking through the floor.
And the fun thing is watching people grow within the
organized you know, back when they started it at this position,
and you watch them grow up and they might be
a lead over a department.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
That's the rewarding part of the business.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
I got two thanks real quick before I let you go.
It's been a fantastic conversation learning about Eric Thiel and
again he is the CEO of Cabinet Reestylers in Ashland,
and we talk about all the products they make and
they send him all over the United States. You use
the word family, which for you this is a family business,
but it sounds like the employees that work for you.

(09:30):
It is like a family, right it is.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
You know, I you know I could, I could go
down in the list and talk about Matt and you
know his families and things he went through, and and
you know Bob and Brett, and just go on and
on about the people. You know, Shannon, you r hr
Gow and just you know Cheryl on our front desk,
and you have to She's just the sunshine of the company.
So I always tell you aboudy me, a little sunshine
is cloudy. I walk by Shannon's office or go by

Cheryl's desk, you know you'll get a little sunshine from Cheryl.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Awesome. Awesome to hear the other thing too. And I
told you off the air. I talk with the Mayor
of Ashland, Matt Miller. Every month. Your company's expanding. There's
a lot of great things happening in Ashland. He always
talks about wanting to make Ashland sparkle. But you have
to be I mean, you think of housing, all the
things going on with the schools, whether it's Ashland High School, University.
There's a lot of positive things going on in ash.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Yeah, a lot of great things. And you know, Tiplug Matt,
he has done a great job. You know since he's
come into office. There a lot of good things happening.

Speaker 1 (10:25):

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm.
