Speaker 1 (00:00):
CEOs you should know here from local leaders in the community,
made possible by Witcom and hess. CPAs and Financial Advisors.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Are featured CEO this week. We are excited a new
business in Mansfield recently and we're going to get the
entire story this morning as we say good morning to
Chris Beers, who is the founder and owner of Grandpa
Joe's Candy Shop and it's located in downtown Mansfield. First
(00:30):
of all, Chris, thank you so much. We're thrilled to
learn about you guys.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
How you doing today, fantastic good morning and thanks for
having me, especially this busy time of the holiday season.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah, you got it very much. Everybody's thinking a holiday
season for sure. So I love this program because we
get to learn about, you know, local businesses, organizations the
story about them. Maybe some people are new to the
area they don't know. I know, you guys just recently
opened here. So if somebody's not familiar, tell us about
(00:59):
Grandpa you Candy Shop.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Grandpa Ja's Candy Shop is an experience unlike any other
candy store you've ever been to. Customers are going to
walk through the doors at eighty West third Street, right
there across from the library and they're gonna be just
shocked and overwhelmed. And how much inventory we crammed and
packed into that four thousand square foot store. It's it's
an experience unlike anything else. We've got the nostalgic old
(01:23):
school candy. We've got international stuff that you haven't seen
unless you've traveled abroad. And we've got toys, games, gifts,
and over sixteen different flavors of ice cream as well.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Now, Chris, you mentioned, you know, nostalgic. You know, you'll
give us somebody grew up, you know, maybe kind of
what era walk in and see it, take us down,
you know, a kind of memory lane here for maybe
somebody who's a little bit older now what they're going
to see in your store.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Everything from necho wafers to the candy buttons. Do you
remember like the little pieces of candy that stuck to
this piece of paper and you could never get all
of the paper off of them. Yep, we've got the
was in fundip and all kinds of old school stuff.
How about cream savers? Remember cream savers? They were always
in my grandmother's purse when we went to church, and
(02:10):
really really good stuff.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
I remember Cream Savers when I was younger. Absolutely, we're
talking today with Chris Beers, who's the founder and owner
of Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop. They're located again in downtown
Mansfield and eighty West third Street. Chris, let's get a
little bit of the history of the company. You were
telling me, you know one in Mansfield, but you're in
(02:33):
multiple states. If you would tell us a little bit
about the history of your business.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I had the idea to open a candy store back
in twenty twelve and open to my very first store
in the Pittsburgh It's kind of the tourist hub the
downtown mom and pop shop area of Pittsburgh. And as
soon as I opened the doors back in twenty twelve,
I kind of instantly knew that I was on to something,
just because the customers faces just were over whelmed with
(03:00):
just excitement and joy when they could take a trip
down memory lane by going through just the isles of
candy that we had. And so remarkably, in the last
twelve years, we've grown the company to have twenty locations
in five different states. It's definitely been an tremendous reward
and couldn't do it without my incredible team that I've got.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Chris Beers is our guest, our feature CEO.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
You should know.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
He's the founder and owner of Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop.
We mentioned a location in downtown Mansfield. You mentioned five states.
Do you know how many you have in the state
of Ohio?
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Seven? Right now? In the state of Ohio, we have
Mansfield and then the closest one would be Cuyahoga Falls
right there on Front Street, and then we go down
south a little bit. How about Springfield, Ohio, Troy, Miamisburg, Middletown,
and Chili Cooffee.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Now, Chris, I'm curious you mentioned, you know seven in
the state of Ohio. How did you decide to come
to Mansfield.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
I'd love to hear that story.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
All of our locations are are really part of downtown communities,
and that's truly important to me. I love to be
part of the community. So some can say that, oh,
they're a chain or they're at corporate you know location,
because they've got twenty locations. But I don't run my
business like that. I don't have my store managers operate
as if we have some big conglomerate in Pittsburgh, and
(04:21):
we're a big chain. Each one of our stores, our
store managers are empowered to find a way to say
yes to every single donation request. We try our very
hardest to participate in the community events and help support
all of the small other businesses that are in the
communities that we're in. And so Mansfield, you know, it's
been on the map for a little while for me,
(04:42):
paying attention to the growth and the redevelopment and all
of the construction work that's been happening to make downtown
Mansfield a better shopping experience and to invite more people,
and so it's been painful to the small business owners
there in Mansfield. But look at the support that the
community has given to all of the businesses throughout this
construction time, and you can really tell that the people
(05:05):
of Mansfield support their downtown businesses and we're just excited
to help be a part of that.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
You're hearing the voice today of Chris Beer's Grandpa Joe's
Candy Shop downtown Mansfield. He mentioned they have what locations
in five states seven in the state of Ohio, including
the one I mentioned and eighty West third Street in
downtown Mansfield. He's the founder and he is the owner,
and you opened in I think it was late October
in Mansfield of this year, twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
How has the response been?
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Holy smoke. So we kept it a secret as best
as we can, and about five days before the opening,
we told everyone that we were going to be opening
at Thursday at four h five pm. And we had
over one hundred and fifty people in line. When we
ripped the paper off the windows and opened the doors
for the first time, and the crowd didn't stopped coming.
(05:53):
It was unbelievable. And it's continued to be for now
several weeks. It's been continued to just be in credible
amount of folks come in to experience Grandpa shows truly
rewarding and I'm extremely grateful.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
That's awesome. Again, Chris Beers is with us again. He's
the founder and owner of Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop. Now,
I don't know if you can ballpark this in terms
of staff members. I don't know if you want to
say how many in the Mansfield location or how many
company wide because you have so many, but could tell
us a little bit about staff members for your company.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
We have eight to ten team members in our Mansfield location.
About six of those are full time positions and the
other two to four are part time positions, and then
total complied, I have over two hundred and fifty eight
team members that help Fling Candy and help us grow
the business every single day.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Really cool to hear your story.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
So let's step away from work and find out a
little bit more about you personally. Again, you're hearing from
Chris Beers this morning, founder and owner and this week's CEO.
You should know of Grandpa Joe's candy shop. Tell us
so you know where you were born, high school, college,
all of that. Chris, tell us a little bit more
about your story.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
I grew up in eastern PA near the bottom of
the Pocono Mountains, small town, and I got involved in
the restaurant business to start off. My father had a
passion for cooking and did the restaurant business for about
ten to fifteen years and traveled from Philadelphia to Ohio
and ended up landing in West Carrollton, Ohio, down near
(07:23):
Miamisburg in Dayton. You know, kept moving around with the
restaurant business and finally landed in Pittsburgh, which is where
we started the company, but got married along the way,
my wife, Jennifer, and three beautiful girls ages sixteen, fourteen,
and eleven. It's been absolutely rewarding being able to have
a business that supports my family as well and home
(07:46):
for me. Right now is just outside of Pittsburgh, in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
All right now, Chris, I got to ask, you mentioned something.
This is something you've wanted to do for a while,
open up you know, you know this candy shop. But
when you were growing up you mentioned you went into
the restaurant business. You know, what were the aspirations, you know,
growing up, going to high school, all of that. What
did you did you always know restaurant business and want
to kind of open a candy store.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Tell us a little bit about growing up and what
you wanted to do.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
My dad was self employed, so I always enjoyed the
entrepreneurship that I saw with him. The man worked seven
days a week, had an incredible work ethic, and you know,
that's what I picked up from him. So the restaurant
business very demanding. I did very well in the restaurant business,
but it just got to be a part where that
it didn't feel like it was mine, and I wanted
(08:34):
something to have on my own, and so I go
back to my obsession with Willy Welka in the Chocolate Factory,
a book that I had read at an early age,
a movie that I had watched probably once a week
because it feels like it's always on one channel somewhere
on the TV set, and just having this obsession was
Willy Welker in the Chocolate Factory. He got married while
I was still in the restaurant business and still were
(08:58):
a purple tuxt to my wedding because because of my
obsession with Willie Welcome the Chocolate Factory. And it was
a few years later that decided to open up my
very first store. So for me, entrepreneurship and the rewards
that come with it and the challenges that come with it,
that's kind of my whole reason for making this happen.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Really cool to hear your story this morning again. Chris
Bears is the voice you hear will keep him for
a few more minutes. He's the founder and owner of
Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop. They have locations in five states,
seven in the state of Ohio, and of course one
right here in downtown Mansfield and I'm on your website.
They can go online, Chris to Grandpa Joe'scandyshop dot com
(09:38):
over I'm reading right here over three hundred and fifty
varieties of old fashioned glass bottled soda, gourmet handcrafted chocolates,
handscoop ice cream, milkshakes, floats. You mentioned all the candy,
all of that. If somebody's never been into one of
your stores, I know they can take a virtual tour
on your website, but if you would tell them why
they have to stop into your store. Probably I actually
(10:00):
here at the holidays for sure, but to tell them
why they got to stop it and check you guys out.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Can we just relax for a minute and take a
break from all of the stress in life and walk
through the doors of a candy store and get that warm,
incredible welcome from my staff when you walk through the door,
And then just put your phone away and just relax
and enjoy the unbelievable, overwhelming amount of inventory that we
have in our store, and just take some time to
(10:27):
peruse the shelves and find stuff you haven't seen in years,
and you'll be surprised with the number of toys, games,
and gifts that you find, and there's something in there
for everybody. So if you're looking for a stocking stuffer
or a gift for that hard to shop for a person,
I can guarantee you you're going to find something unique,
something you probably have never seen inside a retail store before.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
It Grant patchos, you know, Chris, I hear you talking.
For a lot of people, it'll be like a walk
down memory lane, right, take them back in time?
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Definitely, Yes again, Chris spears.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
We'll keep them again for just a couple more minutes's
got a couple more questions. Our featured CEO you should
know this week. He's the founder and owner of Grandpa
Joe's Candy Shop in downtown Mansfield. I didn't get to
ask you. You talked about your family. Awesome to hear there.
What do you like to do when you're not working?
You get all these locations, multiple states? What do you
do in your spare time?
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Chris? I'll talk about some hobbies you have.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
I'm a hockey fan, so try to make it to
as many hockey games as I can. Love sports of
all kind, football and baseball, of course, but you know,
just keeping up with my kids, busy schedules. That's pretty
much the hobby there, and spend a little bit of
time with my wife going for some walks and just
enjoying nature whenever I get a chance.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
All right, before I let you go, if you would
share with us? Are you guys, are you good employee
wise right now? You're still looking for people? How's employee
wise in Mansfield? Pretty good shape?
Speaker 3 (11:48):
We're in pretty good shape right now. We're always hiring
good people, folks that want to join our team and
grow with us. And so as we continue to open
more locations in the region and throughout Ohio and throughout
some of the other we'd love for folks to take
consideration into joining a company that's growing and values the
team members that we have.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
And they can do that. Can they apply online, stop
at the store? Both?
Speaker 3 (12:11):
They can do both. Prefer if you go onto Grandpa
Joe's dot com and complete an application there and it
gets to our team.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
All right now, while we're on your website? Am I reading?
Am I right? Can they order online and have it
and have it sent somewhere?
Speaker 3 (12:24):
You bet within twenty four hours of you pressing that
submit button, our little oop o ooompus will get packing
away and get those orders shipped out very quickly.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
All right, get gift cards on there as well. Again,
it is Grandpajoscandyshop dot com founder and owner Chris Beers
with us Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop in downtown Mansfield at
eighty West third Street. Anything you want to leave our
listeners with that I miss awesome to hear about your company, Chris,
anything we've missed this morning you want to leave our
listeners with?
Speaker 3 (12:53):
How about the value that we bring to the store.
And so there is a world famous five dollars candy before.
No other candy store in the world does it the
way we do it. I invented the five dollars candy
buffet back in twenty twelve. Customers can grab a box
from our buffet well and still it was as much
candy as they can cram in that box. You have
(13:14):
to stack and cram your box strategically, but as much
candy as you can fit in that box, as long
as the lid can close all day every day is
just five dollars. It's really one of the best values
inside our store.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
That is really really cool.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
People hearing that will be heading their way downtown Mansfield
to check out Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop. Chris Beer is
the founder and owner of the company Again. The website
is Grandpa Joe'scandyshop dot com and Again eighty West third
