The CEO you should know, broughtto you by Roby Foster Miller Eric Insurance.
This week's CEO Jason Bauman, Mansfield'snew police chief. Today we are
going to chat with the new policechief in Mansfield. He was sworn in
last Friday on March twenty second.Jason Bauman is with us. First of

(00:24):
all, Jason, good morning andcongratulations on being named police chief. Ah,
thank you, Eric. So youare the new chief of police in
the city of Mansfield. We're goingto find out a bit about your background.
Jason. Let's kind of begin ingeneral. How long have you been
in law enforcement in general? Well, in general, I got into the

(00:44):
field back would have been nineteen ninetyeight. I started down at Charles Mill
as a park ranger and then camehere to Mansfield August of ninety nine.
Now, starting with the Mansfield PDin ninety nine, I'm sure you worked
your way up. I know youbecame assistant chief a few years back.
Do you have any of those maybedifferent positions you've held over the years.

(01:06):
Yeah, yeah, I was apatrol officer on afternoon a night watch for
the first fourteen years of my career. September of fourteen, I got promoted
to sergeant. I went to ourtraffic section for a year and there before
I went back to patrol. Ithink it was twenty I want to say

(01:26):
eighteen. I got promoted to lieutenant. I then went to our administrative section.
As the administrative lieutenant. At thattime, I oversaw our communications section,
our drone unit, a couple ofthe specialty units. From there,
I think it was December of nineteen, I was reassigned to the Metrics Drug

(01:49):
Task Force as a task force commander. I was there until June. I
believe it was of twenty one whenI took the promotion to assistant chief.
All Right, glad to learn thestory this morning of Jason Bauman again this
week's CEO. You should know heis the new police chief in the city
of Mansfield. I'm sure it wasquite an honor. I'm sure there were

(02:12):
you know, family on Friday oflast week, you know there for the
swearing inso ceremony. I'm sure thatwas a special moment for you and your
family. Oh, absolutely absolutely,Jason. Could we get as we talk
about that, you know, thinkabout it, you know, growing up,
what was there always you know, dreams for you to go into law
enforcement. Was this always something youkind of aspired to do? Well,

(02:32):
My father was a was a policeofficer here at Mansfield for over thirty I
think it was thirty one years,So yeah, this is pretty much I
grew up around it and all thatI kind of knew. I did right
out of high school. I hadgotten a scholarship from Ashland University to attend

(02:53):
College of Art and get into graphicarts and designs. And right before I
was supposed to head off, Idecided I wanted to try something else.
I didn't want to want to sitbehind a desk for an entire career.
So I pulled the plug and wona completely different direction and started chasing this
dream. Well, as you talkabout this dream, of course, you

(03:13):
were just named police chief, andyeah, I think I read the comment
from you and the press release thatthe community is near and dear to your
heart, and you thank the mayoryou know, for placing her trust in
you, and of course you saidthat you're a fantastic leader. I'm sure
it's been great working with the newmayor. It sounds like she's been amazing.
I'm super excited for the direction ofthe city. I think we're going

(03:38):
in a totally different path now andand I just it's it's exciting and great
to hear the voice this morning ofJason Baum and Mansfield's new police chief.
This week's CEO, you should know, let's talk about the department a little
bit more roughly right now, howmany officers do you have in total on
the forest? I know that canchange from time to time, you know,

(03:59):
with a return rons and things likethat. Where are you guys at
right now? Yeah, so currentlywe're sitting at seventy six officers. We've
got a couple in the academy aswe speak, so out of that seventy
six who are off in training. You know, we currently have a lateral
list open that we're trying to getthose numbers up. So we should be
at about one hundred and two totalfor a city our size. But like

(04:25):
all agencies across the country, youknow, we hire a couple and we
lose a couple. So we've beenfloating right around that upper seventies for probably
last couple three years. Jason, let me ask you, somebody may ask
what are the duties of a policechief? I know, talking to the
former chief, Keith Port, youtold me that the phone's always ringing for
you guys, But if you would, what are what are some of the

(04:46):
things you kind of oversee day today you work on because I know there's
a lot to oversee in entire policedepartment. Yeah, yeah, there is.
So you know, the biggest partwith this position, you know,
like the chief porch head in thepast, it is uh, you know,
the phone calls, the interactions,a lot of meetings, you know,
we attend, we try to interacta lot, you know, with

(05:09):
the community, different community groups. So you know, that keeps you busy
on that side. Of course, you know, managing the budget of the
city, you know, that alwaystakes takes up a lot of time.
But pretty fortunate with the the staffthat we have around us here at Mansfield
PD. They they do well, they do all the hands on good work

(05:30):
here that that does make our jobsa lot easier. You're hearing from the
new police chief in Mansfield today,Jason Bauman, this week's CEO. You
should know and I know it's beenbrought up over the years, and of
course you have worked with Mansfield Policefor a long time. I know the
crime lab in Mansfield is very wellrespected across the state. Oh absolutely across
the across the world. Tony Timbasco, for those that that know him,

(05:55):
has taken that lab to levels thatmost labs don't read. The entire staff
down there in the lab just amazingwork. And I think a lot of
people don't know how fortunate we areto have that lab in this department,
because most agencies don't even have acrime lab. Nonetheless, a lab at
the level that we have. Yeah, and I know I've heard you just

(06:15):
from over the years that there areother cities across the state. It may
go further, I don't know, but at least in Ohio that use Mansfield's
crime lab. Correct, Yes,correct, Tony does a lot of work
for a lot of the big citiesaround Ohio. Well, before we find
out a bit more about you,Jason Bauman, if you would for somebody
who's never been to the police departmentin Mansfield. Where are you, guys

(06:36):
located at downtown So we're on thefirst and second floor of the city building
here at thirty North Diamond Street. All right, and let's step away from
work and find out a bit moreabout you. Jason Bauman again, Mansfield
Police Chief. Let's go back tothe very beginning, and Jason, if
you would please tell us where wasJason Bauman born? I was born right

(06:59):
here in Mansfield, a good oldgeneral hospital. All right, born in
Mansfield. Next, tell us where'dyou go to high school? So?
I graduated from Madison back in ninetytwo. All right, a ram.
Next if you would after high school? If people missed it, you may
gave you a little bit earlier.Tell us about college. Yeah, so
initially I was going to head offto Ashland and that didn't pan out.

(07:21):
Of course, back in the earlynineties, getting into this profession, it
was pretty competitive. So I endedup enrolling out at nc it's now n
C State and got into the associatedegree program where I did obtain my associate
degree and also ended up going intothe police academy out there, so I

(07:41):
was certified when I got hired atboth Charles Milly and Mansfield here. All
right, Now, let's learn alittle bit more about Jason Bauman. Tell
us, I don't know if you'remarried kids. Tell us more about Jason
and the family. Yeah, yeah, I'm married, have two children.
When my son works here at thepolice department with me, so he decided

(08:01):
to be third generation, and mydaughter attends college. She's a sophomore nursing
school up around Cleveland. All right, it has to be pretty cool.
You're with the police department, sois your son. You mentioned your dad.
That's a pretty neat family time.It is it is it, It's
very special to me. All right, Jason. Before we finish our conversation,

(08:24):
I have a couple more questions aboutthe police department. But while we're
on the topic of you, whenyou were not working and I mentioned as
the chief, I know the phonerings, you know, buzzes, all
that all the time. But whenyou have spare time, quiet time,
hobby time, what do you dowhen you're not working? Jason? Oh,
Well, up till about two yearsago, I was chasing sporting events

(08:45):
all around the east coast of thecountry with both both the kids. So
when the daughter headed off to college, we kind of sat around and looked
at each other and said, whatdo we do now? So I've always
been into riding motorcycles and just kindof like the outdoors y kind of stuff.
We got a pool, so welike doing the swimming in the pool,

(09:05):
and outside of that, that's well, fishing every now and again,
but just the peace and quiet iskind of nice at times. All right,
absolutely, Jason Bauman, this week'sCEO. You should know Mansfield's new
police chief. Let's get back tothe department for a moment. And you
know that there's there's a lot ofdifferent so I know, there's you know,
shot spotter technology. You think abouta police cruiser maybe when you started.

(09:28):
Different Now all the computer all thattechnology, right, Oh yeah,
it's like a cockpit of an airplaneanymore. You know when I come on,
it was just a bench seat anda spotlight and now you almost got
to kind of maneuver yourself into thecar with all the technology. But it
has to help you, guys.I just think of like a shot spot
or something like that technology. AndI know those license plate readers. There's

(09:50):
so many things that help the departmentwhen you talk about technology, Oh,
absolutely, and leaps and bounds. And just in my twenty five years the
profession, you know, I was, I know, I'm dating myself,
but part of the first group whenthey put computers in the car and the
ones that you were able to runa driver's license and actually get a photo.

(10:11):
You know, this was now justas simple as punching in their driver's
license and you had an instant picture. So that in itself was a game
changer. And then as you saidtoday, with the shot spot or technology
and the license plate readers, it'sjust taken the profession and investigating to a
whole different level, which is isgood. It's good for the community.
Jason, two more questions. I'lllet you go. You know, super

(10:35):
busy guy police chief in Mansfield,Jason Bauman with us today this week's CEO
you should know, and just talkingwith you know, former Chief Porch,
but also talking with other chiefs aroundthe area, you know, Tom Hill
and Ontario. It seems to belaw enforcement in Rixland Counties, Ronic counties.
You guys really work well together herein the county. We do.
We do. The relationship between allof us chiefs and sheriff, the prosecutor

(11:01):
is is uh is fantastic. Andand I know you've probably seen when you're
out on some of these calls, you know, on some of these events,
is pretty much it's all hands ondeck. Everybody's struggling with the same
man power issues. Everybody understands that, and we work great together. I
love the relationship we have. Yeah, absolutely, don't forget. We'll forget

(11:24):
about the highway patrol. I knowtalking with them too. Everybody doing a
great job here locally. As Ilet you go. If somebody has a
question, you know, for thepolice department, they're not sure about something,
what's the best place I would assumeprobably go to the website because there
they probably can find all types ofphone numbers and things like that. Right,

(11:45):
absolutely, all that is that informationis on there. Our administrative number
is on there. That's the fourone nine seven five five nine seven two
four number that will get you directedto somebody. And then we also have
have the metrics dot com app youcan get on their submit tips tell us
all kinds of resources and all kindsof other good stuff on that app.

(12:09):
So any of those will get youwhere you need to go. All right,
website, Mansfield Police Department dot com. And again you can get information
links, community programs. I'm lookingat it right now, a lot of
great information on the Mansfield Police Departmentwebsite again, Mansfield Police Department dot com.
We will let him go. Imentioned busy schedule, but we thank
