made possible by Witcom and hess CPAs and financial Advisors.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Are featured CEO this week is Jeremy Harrison, who's the
founder and CEO of One Table Strategy, and we're excited
to learn about him and his company. Jeremy, good morning,
Thank you for coming in.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Good morning, Erin, thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, I know I've heard your name for many, many years,
and people maybe for the first time or hearing One
Table Strategy. Y, So we're excited tell us about your company.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yes, So the name that people might recognize is Spire
and so I started my agency almost twenty years ago.
It's going to be twenty years this upcoming spring. And
in late July, we just announced a new name, which
is now called One Table Strategy. It's the same company,
it's the same ownership, the same people, same services, but
we're operating under a new name.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
All right. So if somebody has never heard Aspire, now
One Table Strategy, tell us what you got do?
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Absolutely?
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
So everything that we do is focused on helping businesses
grow and our typical business that we work with has
between ten and two hundred and fifty employees and the
teams that we work with through One Table Strategy is
focused on strategy first marketing and so you know, for
years we've built a lot of websites, we've done a
lot of work with helping them drive traffic and get
(01:22):
the customers that they need generate leads.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
And with the advent of AI.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Things have changed significantly and so there's so many things
out there that people can do and it's sort of
become chaos for businesses. And so what we've recognized is
that people more than anything need help figuring out what
to do, and so you can run in a lot
of different directions. And so what we're focused on at
One Table Strategy is getting everybody around a table, their
(01:49):
business owners, CEOs, their marketing leaders and sales leaders and
helping them find alignment around the things that need to
happen so that they're focused on the right things and
not running in a different direction.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
All right, So getting everybody around one table exactly. There's
the name One Table Strategy. Today founder and CEO Jeremy
Harrison is our guest. So you said spire and now
again that the name is One Table Strategy. Roughly, he said,
twenty years ago. Do you remember the exact year you
guys started.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
It was March of two thousand and six, So we're
at nineteen and a half years right now.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
All right? And where are if people don't know, where
are you based out of?
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, we have two locations. Our primary our headquarters is
in Ashland. We're on East Main Street right across from
the root beer stand if you know where that is.
We've been in that location for many, many years. And
we also in twenty eighteen opened an office in tiff And, Ohio.
We're able to work with businesses in Northwest Ohio in
a more face to face setting as well.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
All right, So that's good continued growth, right you mentioned
started in Ashland and you've branched out Tiffin toward northwest Ohio.
Then that that has to be terrific for you guys,
absolutely all right. Well, as we learn about your business,
you mentioned, you know, helping people grow in businesses, marketing
and strategy. How did the idea of this come about?
You mentioned almost twenty years ago. People, I'm sure would
(03:04):
love to hear that store.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
So I started the company in two thousand and six
and it was really driven by seeing businesses that needed
to get online a lot of times. Back in two
thousand and six, they were just doing online strategies for
the first time. So I joked that I accidentally started
a web design company because what I was trying to
do is start a marketing agency. But I would go
out and talk to businesses and say, hey, you know,
(03:28):
we help with marketing, digital marketing, and they're like, what's that, Well,
you know, we can run ads, we can help you
generate traffic, we can build your website.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
A website, that's what I need.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
And so everybody wanted websites, and so the first three
to five years in business, that's all we were doing
was building websites for people. And to this day, there's
hundreds of businesses, more than four hundred companies that have
their websites with us that we've built and continued to
support over the years. And so one important part of
what we do is help people with their websites. But
as we continued to grow, we were to press into
(04:00):
the other areas that I'm also really passionate about, which
is helping because a website alone isn't going to do
it for you, and so it's helping them make the
connections with their customers to target the right people and
generate traffic.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
And so, yeah, I started the business. We were able
to grow.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
It was also notably just a couple of years before
the Great Recession, and so I got the business started
and we were growing fast, and then all of a sudden,
everything dried up and people were calling me and saying, hey,
you know that website project I committed to, We're going
to have to pump the brakes on that. And so
it was very scary those first two thousand and eight
(04:37):
and two thousand and nine because we had no cash
reserve and banks didn't know who we were, and so
I remember skipping paychecks to keep some of our people working.
And there was a day in two thousand and eight
where I stepped out of the office because I didn't
want my team to know I was panicked. But I
got in my car and I just sat in the
car and I just sobbed because I had no idea
(04:59):
how I was going to pay my people at the
end of the week. But we were able to get
through that season and ended up discovering a really important
part of our growth that came after that, which was
doing seminars, and so I realized that people would call
me saying, hey, I need to pause the website.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
That they'd say, but.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
I'm also running these billboards and doing these other things.
You have any suggestions about what I ought to do
with that during this season? And so I decided I
reached out to the Mansfield Chamber and I said, hey,
how about we do a seminar about how to do
marketing during a recession? And we ended up having people
come in. We sold out four events in a row
talking about marketing during a recession, and that was enough
(05:34):
to allow us to kind of keep our business going
and growing enough through that season to be successful.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
We are hearing this morning the story of Jeremy Harrison,
founder CEO of One Table Strategy. All right, so, in
terms of your business, you help a lot of companies.
You're based in Ashlynd, you mentioned one in tiff And
is it just people in Ohio? Is it across the country,
Because I think about websites online, you can help people anywhere.
Talk about kind of your reach.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Yeah, so we do have customers all over the country. However,
the vast majority, more than eighty percent of our customers
would be within a comfortable drive radius of one of
our offices in Ashland or Tiffin.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
And I would assume that you help people in a
variety of industries then right.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yes, although we've brought that more into focus over the
years and found that our sweet spot is really business
to business companies, people that are trying to reach other
businesses and generate leads, as well as some business to consumer.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
We've done a lot of work with like Senior Living.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
We do work with some nonprofits, but we've also figured
out some areas that we're able to do better than others.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Now, if you would how many staff members do you
guys have right now?
Speaker 1 (06:39):
At one table? There are sixteen?
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Okay, all right, nice? And as you mentioned, I'm sure
you know Internet, all those kind of things you mentioned,
You guys probably can do work, whether it's in the
office away from work, right. I'm sure during the pandemic
everybody kind of had that work from home thing, but
I'm sure for you guys, you can do it, virtually said.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
We can, although we were some of the first folks
back to the office on the other side, and it's
been a unique thing because while you can do this
work with people all over our employees are all in
our offices in Ohio. We have a couple of people
that work remotely, but they also are close enough that
they can come in for a meeting, and so it's
probably tied to that one table thing. We've always been
passionate about getting people around the table, getting our client's
(07:20):
ideas up on whiteboards, and so that's been an important
thing for us.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Yep, you've heard that, get everybody around the table, everybody's
ideas and strategies. Good conversation this morning, learning about Jeremy
Harris and his company, One Table Strategy. He is our
featured CEO this week. He's the founder and CEO again
of One Table Strategy. Alright, let's step away from work
and find out a little bit about you. So people
would like to know where were you born, high school
(07:45):
and all of that. So tell us a bit about
Jeremy Harrison.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Sure.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
I grew up on a farm in northwest Ohio, just
outside of Tiffin, which is where our other office is located,
and went to Lakota High School, met my wife. I
went to Heidelberg and met my wife there and we
got married like just a couple months after graduation, and
lived in Northwest Ohio for a couple of years, and
then in two thousand and three we moved to Ashland.
(08:08):
We came here for her to go to the seminary.
She's a Christian counselor. But we decided quickly after moving
to town that we were here to stay. And so
then I started my business and went from there.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Jeremy, before I go any further, you had mentioned to me,
and I don't want to forget to bring this up.
You also help leadership teams. Explain that for us?
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Yeah, you know, in helping businesses grow, marketing is an
important part of that, but sometimes there's other things that
they run into in the business they can get in
the way, just things with the way the leadership is structured,
the way there's accountability, and sometimes a team can grow
and then they can uncover other problems that need to
be fixed before they can keep growing. And so after
going through a series of there were two major challenges
(08:48):
that we faced in our business in twenty twenty three.
It led to me getting into another area of work.
And so I'll just back up real quick and share
a little bit of a story with you, if that's okay.
The two major challenges that we faced in twenty twenty
three The first was that we found out that we
were going to be losing our biggest client. And this
was a company that had grown thirty x and four
(09:10):
years of working with us. It was a senior living
community and they had really expanded, and we thought we
were great because we knew everybody in the organization. We
found out we were going to be losing them because
they'd been acquired, and so we were going to have
to make some hard decisions with the loss of that client.
And before we made those decisions, the second thing happened,
which was that my son, who was starting his senior
(09:31):
year of high school, passed away of a tragic accident.
And suddenly I was in a place where I couldn't
think about the business and I couldn't do the things
that I needed to do to make the decisions. I
just needed to be home my wife and I needed
to grieve. We needed to get through this. And what
was amazing to me was that our team was able
to step up. They had clarity of what their roles were,
(09:53):
and they were able to make hard decisions, and they
were able to guide the company through those hard decisions
when I wasn't even able to think about the business.
And looking back on that, I realized that it was
because we were running on this system called EOS. It
was something that we'd worked with years prior, and I
realized that a lot of our clients were running into
some of those same issues, and I wanted to be
able to help them get things in place so that
(10:14):
those CEOs and those founders weren't shouldering too much in
their business where they were in a position. Because I
believe that if we hadn't had that in place in
our business prior to those two major challenges, I don't
think the company could have survived through that season. And
so I've decided that with the last twenty years, in
addition to leading One Table Strategy, I'm also really passionate
(10:34):
about helping teams implement this system called EOS, and so
I've been doing that over the past year.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
We are learning again the whole story about One Table
Strategy and their founder and CEO. This morning, Jeremy Harrison
are featured CEO. You should know this week. So when
you're away from work, what kind of hobbies do you have?
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Yeah, so I played the piano. Enjoy doing that.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
In fact, sometimes I don't know if you've heard of
Tom's kitchen table. But every once in a while, maybe
once a month or so, I get to join those
guys and play music with them, and so I really
enjoy that. I also haven't done this in a while,
but I have my pilot's license and I'm really hoping
to get back up.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
There and fly a little bit more so.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
There's a plane at the Ashland Airport that I rent
take out and it's just a really peaceful thing to do.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
How long have you had your license.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
For since twenty eighteen?
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Okay, something you always thought about or just kind of
came about. It's interesting, right, yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Yeah, it's you know. I joke. My wife told me
I needed a hobby.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
They say, they tell you that when they want you
to get out the door. I think she also recognized
that I needed to get out of the business a
little bit because there was so much in that, and
so the hobby really was something that I loved. It
was an intense thing that I could dig into and
have really enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Nice. How far have you went?
Speaker 1 (11:49):
I think the.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Biggest fight I did was up basically across all the
not across, but along all of the Great Lakes and
ended up going up through the Upper Peninsula Michigan and
then back down around Chicago.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Cool awesome learning the story again. If Jeremy Harrison are
featured CEO One Table Strategy his company, he's the founder
and CEO. Before I let you go, I do want
to circle back. If somebody wants to get more information
you've shared about you know what all you guys do,
how many companies you guys have helped, continue to help
all all the work you do. If somebody wants to
(12:21):
reach out website, phone number, how do they get in contact,
you know, talk to somebody and all of that.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Yeah, so they can call our office which is four
one nine four nine six four two one two. You
can also visit our website at www dot one table
Strategy dot com.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
And one Table Strategy. Would that be O N.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
E O N E table Strategy.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
I think both probably work, okay, just to make sure
a lot of table strategy all right.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
One Table Strategy dot Com is the website. Jeremy, is
there anything we missed that you guys do people don't
know about that they should know, or something you just
want to leave our listeners with if they're hearing you
and you know they're intrigued that that kind of thing
with their business.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Yeah, I think just.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
The biggest thing is recognizing that the leaders have an
important role to play in the company to help rise
up other people as well, and so getting alignment in
your organization is such an important theme with the things
I do, both with One Table Strategy and EOS, and
so helping teams if they feel like they're out of alignment,
like people are rowing in different directions, We'd love to
(13:26):
sit down and talk to you and just help you
get everybody pointed in the same direction, and that can
be a valuable next step.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
I know from covering sports you'll hear the analogy everybody
rowing the boat in the same direction, right absolutely here,
that you want that at your business as well. So
you know sports teams do well when everybody's going in
one direction. Same thing with the.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Business, right absolutely.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Yeah, great point to make good conversation this morning. Jeremy
Harrison our guest One Table Strategy, his company, he's founder
and CEO. Well, it's been great to have you in
learn the story all the success. Thank you so much
