(00:00):
The CEO you should know, broughtto you by Roby Foster Miller Eric Insurance.
This week's CEO, Kevin Lacy,co owner of Bowl Lacey Construction.
Good morning, thanks for coming intoday. Great, thanks for having me.
I appreciate it. I've heard thatname for a long long time and
so excited to learn about you andthe company. So let's kind of begin

(00:24):
at the top. Give us alittle history about you guys. Sure,
so, yeah, bu Lacy Constructionwas founded in Greenwich in nineteen eighty four
and Bose my dad and that's wherethe company started. And then you know,
in twenty twelve my business partner,John and I took over the business.
It was pretty small, couple employeesand John and I, you know,

(00:46):
started in the attic of my housein Ashland and we've grown it to
what you see today with four locationsthroughout Ohio. So four locations throughout the
steak. Can you give us thelocations? Sure? Yeah, we're in
Mansfield, Norwalk, Circleville and MountVernon. All right, So as we
learn about the company starting in theeighties with your dad, talk about the

(01:07):
reach with those four offices, howfar do you guys cover? Yeah,
so we cover pretty much the wholestate of Ohio. The Norrick office,
you know, it serves all theway to Toledo and Cleveland area, and
you know Ashland. You know, the map kind of crosses each other in
spots, but Mansie will serve mostof central Ohio. Mount Vernon will serve

(01:27):
you know, all the way fromNew Philadelphia to Mount Vernon to parts of
Columbus. And then Circleville is aboutthirty minutes south of Columbus, so it
serves a southern part of Columbus, you know, all the way down to
Jackson, Ohio, and as faras over to Dayton. So yeah,
we cover most of the state. That's awesome, terrific coverage for Bowl Lacey

(01:48):
Construction. One of their co ownersin the studio this morning. It's Kevin
Lacey. He is this week's CEO. You should know. So we hear
bow Lacey Construction. What all doyou guys do? Yeah, so you
know, the Mansfield office does bathrooms, roofing, siding, windows, and
decks. The other locations do notdo bathrooms. We stick to exterior modeling

(02:09):
there, so we do a tonof decks, roofing and siding and windows
at the other locations. All right, now in terms of you guys,
and we mentioned across the state. When you look at your business, you
know, your dad, you mentioned, started small, but you have to
be proud of how big this hasgrown for you guys. Yeah. Yeah,
Unfortunately, you know what, youknow, my dad passed away in

(02:31):
twenty twelve, and that's you know, John and I had talked about,
you know, going to business together, and his unfortunate sudden passing really pushed
us to do it. And youknow, it's been a long process and
a lot of growth, and it'sbeen fun and exciting to run your own
company. So we really enjoy it. We are chatting again with Kevin Lacy,

(02:53):
co owner of Boat Lacey Construction. This week's CEO. You should know
so well. I want to gonext to us on your website. Great
website, it's bow Lacyconstruction dot com. And one thing people may love is,
hey, i'm thinking about a project, get a free estimate, right,
All those kind of things talk abouthow they kind of get the ball

(03:14):
rolling if they're looking for something.Yeah. Absolutely, So, you know,
usually starts off with our customers, you know, having maybe a dream
or a vision of what their homecould look like with a new deck or
siding or windows, or maybe it'sdrafty and you know, and they're sick
of covering up, you know, with blankets in the winter time, or
they're sick of the you know, the utility bills being outrageous, and they'll

(03:36):
finally give us a call. Andyou know, when they call in,
they're probably going to talk to Currentor TIP. They're going to be answering
the phone. And we like toeducate our customer, so you know,
we don't do any type of highpressure sale. We get you a free
proposal, we'll talk you through,we'll answer your questions for you, and
you know, help you make thebest decision for you and your home.
Let me get you that phone number. It's eight hundred two six six ninety

(04:00):
nine sixteen and again that information ison their website at Bolacyconstruction dot com.
As we're chatting with one of theco owners in studio, Kevin Lacy,
this week's CEO. You should know, all right, So let's step away
from work and find out a bitmore about you. So let's step back
to the very beginning and tell uswhere was Kevin Lacy born? Well,

(04:24):
I was born in Shelby and thereason I was born in Shelby because Greenwich
does not have a hospital, sothe closes, so the closest hospitals.
And you know, my mom's sideof the family, a lot of them
live in Shelby, so I thinkthat's why she chose Shelby, and me
and my brother and sister were allborn there. Okay, all right,
good next, tell us where'd yougo to high school? South Central?

(04:45):
Yeah? I'm a Trojan through andthrough, and I love my old high
school and I love growing up ina small town and graduating with you know,
only fifty one kids in my class, and you know, farm community
and small community, and you know, just a great place to grow up.
Yeap, know exactly what you mean. I went to Buckeye Central High
School in New Washington, played againstSouth Central. I think I had fifty

(05:06):
in my graduate class. The absolutelyso effict. All right, Well,
after high school, tell us abit about college then. Yeah, So
I was fortunate enough to get ascholarship to play college football at Ashton University.
So I played there for five seasons. I was red shirted my freshman
year. I was a defensive alignmentAnd a cool story is my business partner,

(05:27):
John. Him and I played collegefootball together at Adishland, So he
was a center and I was anoseguard. And he's a year behind me.
He's from Cincinnati originally, so hewent to Moeler High School. So
he's from this big, powerhouse highschool. I'm from this tiny little South
Central and you know, it's kindof polar opposites when it comes to football
career. So but we hit itoff, believe it or not. We

(05:49):
started become best friends. We workedat Walmart one summer together in Ashland and
when we're training for football, sohim and I worked together at Walmart and
that's where we became best friends. And here we are today. I bought
that. Love that story. Reallyreally cool. Teammates in college now teammates
in business, right, Yeah, absolutely, And you know, we love

(06:11):
hiring people that were in sports andpeople that had that team, you know,
since and we hire a lot ofemployees that you know, we even
have Jason Schwam, he was arunning back for US at Ashton University,
and so yeah, we just likedthe team sports. We like hiring people
that graduated locally at Ashland to comework at our headquarters. So it works

(06:31):
out really well for us. Yeah, awesome. The story this morning about
Kevin Lacey, one of the coowners of bo Lacy Construction, this week's
CEO. You should know, allright, So I got to ask you,
as you were growing up and yourfather started this business, did you
know even before college after college thatyou were going to get into the family
business or did you have other aspirations. Well, you know, when you
grow up carrying cement block down inthe basement, you really don't think you're

(06:55):
going to get in that line ofwork. You know, you said,
I'm going to go to college,I'm going to get a degree and it's
going to be great, and I'mgonna maybe work in corporate America or maybe
something like that. Well, soI actually did work for allhiwo to Department
Use Services for about seven years outof college and had a great experience there,
and you know, working with kids, I really enjoy that. So

(07:16):
I wanted to get back with workingwith kids again. So I'm actually an
assistant football coach at Ashland High Schoolas well. So I helped coach the
D line there and it's good toget back into the community and help with
kids. That's really what I'm passionateabout awesome. Got a good quarterback over
there. Nathan Bernhard's drawing a loteyes. Huh oh, yeah, well,
Nathan is absolutely as advertised. There'snot a throw that kid cannot make.

(07:41):
Yeah, I'm excited for him.He was up at Michigan last week.
I really hope he doesn't decide togo to Michigan, but you never
know. I tease him him andhis dad. His dad's a graduate from
Oiwo State, so you know,we like to tease him about that.
But let's let's hope Ohio State offerssoon. I got a couple of Ashland
games on my radio football broadcast schedule. Looking forward the arrows here. Great,

(08:01):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, goodconversation this morning with Kevin Lacey,
co owner of Boat Lacey Construction. He's this week's CEO. You should know,
all right, So while we're onthe topic of you find out where
you're from in high school, college, all of that, but don't know
married kids, tell us a littlemore about Kevin and the family. Yeah.
Yeah, So I married my highschool sweetheart, Bridget, and we've

(08:22):
been married for a long time now. She'll kill me if I mess up
the number. But twenty one years. And then I have my son,
Gunner, who also plays football. He's a linebacker at Ashton High School.
And then my daughter, Kennedy Lacey, she plays basketball going into her sophomore
year. All right, yeah,I know the name Gunner Lacy. Absolutely.

(08:43):
Okay, great cover a lot ofAshland sports. Okay, very cool.
Now, how about when you're notworking, what does Kevin Lacy do
when he has spare time? Doyou have any hobbies? Yeah, you
know, I still enjoy lifting weight, so I work out in the morning
and then you know, I dothe work thing during the day. And
as if any entrepreneurs are listening, you guys probably know how many hats that

(09:05):
we wear, and it's kind ofhis own hobby, being an entrepreneur.
It's at some points, so youknow, I do that, and you
know, the kids sports and coachingfootball really takes up most of my time.
So yeah, my daughter she hasbasketball, my son driving him the
football camps and things like that.So yeah, the kids take up a
lot of my time in coaching rightnow, which I love it. That's

(09:28):
awesome. Now you you mentioned, you know, coaching at Ashland High School.
I just have to say for beingover there broadcasting games. What a
beautiful facility field, the field house, everything. It is really really a
nice facility there at Community Stadium.Yeah, you know the college used to
because I played there in college, right, so back in those days,
it wasn't that great. It wasa grass field. And you know,

(09:50):
I remember these big state schools comingdown from Michigan, Fair State and Saging
all Volley these beautiful facilities, andyou know, they get the ash and
be like what is this, youknow, but they've they've really transformed the
stadium and put brandy Field turf downand redid the track and redid the stadium
stairs and the new field house.I mean, just gorgeous. And you

(10:11):
know a lot of that was fromdonations from the community and just everywhere around
here. We have really strong communityties and folks are really love to donate
to the schools and other charitable organizations. I think that's why my wife and
I decide to stay in this area, just because we love the community so
much. Terrific conversation this morning learningabout Kevin Lacy, co owner of bow

(10:33):
Lacy Construction. He's this week's CEO. You should know real quick. Back
to the Alma mater. How aboutAshland University's facilities now, unbelievable what they
have huh oh yeah. Yeah.So all of the guys you know that
worked for me that played football thereor my business partner John and Jason,
and you know we tease saying likeour knees and elbows is what kind of
built that facility? Right, becauseit's again but it's donations again from local

(10:58):
community members a lot. I knowDwight shar you know, built the football
stadium. If you guys don't knowwho he is, him and his wife
have done some really great things forAshton University. And I'm sure there's other
donors too that's done a lot forthe university. We're strong in donations at
the university as well. We havea scholarship there, Police Construction Scholarship at

(11:20):
AU, and we also sponsor thetop floor of the library is we have
offices, a police construction office thatwe sponsor up there as well to interview
people for jobs that may be graduatingfrom Ashland and we have meetings up there
and stuff too, to kind ofget out of headquarters and have a different
venue. So yeah, AU isour local college four years, six year

(11:41):
degree place. And we really enjoysupporting AU and you know, going to
the football game is great. Andyou know, they got NFL players that
are popping out every other year, seems like, so a lot of great
players coming through there. And theygot that new indoor facility as well,
which is just that that really takesit to another level, doesn't Oh,

(12:01):
it's unbelievable. I mean I Iwas just at Northwestern's football stadium. They
invited my son up there for afootball camp, and I mean, it's
a beautiful indoor facility. It's abig tennis right on the lake and it's
gorgeous. I mean, and I'vebeen in you know, Woody Hayes and
Ohio State and then I start tothink for a second, I was like,
that new facility to Ashland is notvery far off. I mean,

(12:24):
these facilities. It's got a trackand you know, one hundred yard field
and they have baseball and track andfootball and softball. And if you guys
haven't had a chance to go seethat, I highly recommend the listeners go
there check it out. I knowthey have the jud Logan Lifegiver track meet
there every year that's open to thepublic. Amongst other you know, indoor

(12:46):
track meets. Yeah, it's justan unbelievable facility. It's a crown and
jewel. I think of the sportsprogram over there, and that's the nis
Athletic Complex, and yes see thenis Athletic Complex is what it's called.
And again a donation from a localgentlemen here. Can't say enough good things
about him and what he's done forthe university as well. Yeah, a
lot of great things happening and weare having a great conversation this morning,

(13:09):
Kevin Lacey, co owner bow LaceyConstruction. Before I let you go a
few more things, let's get backto work. So right now, how
many staff members do you know? You guys have several offices, but how
many staff members do you have atbow Lacy Construction? Yeah, we usually
run in the mid forties, soI think the last one is forty four
full time employees. You know,we do some seasonal things as well because

(13:30):
we're in the construction field, butwe'll run about forty four full time,
year round staff. While we're talkingstaff, are you guys hiring right now?
Yeah, absolutely, we're hiring. We're looking for anything from sales staff,
production managers. You know, we'vepromoted a few guys recently and we
need to fill their shoes. Andyou know, the great thing about the

(13:52):
company and the culture the company isa lot of our folks get promoted and
they get promoted quick. I meanwe've had guys promote with in three months
because they just come in, dofantastic job. They get promoted to a
position. Then we the great thingsthat get promoted, we're happy for them.
The bad things we got to fillthat spot over again, you know,
and they're doing such a great jobat it. But yeah, it's

(14:13):
a great place to work, greatcompany culture I have. The employees are
the best. And I mean ifyou just call the office and you just
call it eight hundred number and thepeople answer the phone, you know,
that kind of just sets the tonewith our customers and you know what type
of company that we have there. Now, Kevin, somebody hears your voice
and they say, hey, youknow I want to work for bow Lacy
Constructing sound like an awesome company. How do they get the ball roll and

(14:37):
how do they start that process towork for you guys? Yeah, so
you can fill out our job listingsare on our website. But Lacy Construction
dot com there's an employment tab.You click on that and fill it right
online. You can come into theoffice. We're open, you know,
normal business hours, you know, eight to five Monday through Friday. They
can come in and physically fill outone, or they can mail it in.
You know, we don't care howthey how they have it. I

(15:00):
mean, they can even message meon LinkedIn and you know, you can
message me on Facebook or the bowLacy Construction and we'll get you to the
right spot. Awesome. All theinformation Bowlacyconstruction dot Com. The phone number
eight hundred and two sixty six ninetynine sixteen. The voice this morning is
Kevin Lacy, co owner of bowLacy Construction. He's this week's CEO.

(15:22):
You should know, all right,So before I let you go, it's
been a terrific conversation learning about yourcompany, and you kind of alluded to
this a moment ago when you usethe word culture. I wanted to ask
you about what sets you guys apartbow Lacy Construction. Somebody is thinking about
having some work done. You andI were actually talking off there before we
turn the microphones on. Reputation, you know, a customer word of mouth,

(15:43):
the great work you do tell usa bit about what makes you guys
special. The thing about home improvementservices is it does get a black eye
in the community sometimes because the BetterBusiness Bureau reports that the number one complaint
to the Better Business Bureau is usecars and number two is home improvement professionals.
So what we like to do isbring a professionalism to the home improvement

(16:07):
industry. We're members of Certified ContractorsNetwork and that's what we base around,
and we were the twenty twenty twoCompany of the Year with them. We're
also the Columbus Better Business Bureau TortuAward winner for business Ethics and so you
know, having great business ethics. And when you call in, what sess
us apart is our people. Youknow, we care about our work.

(16:30):
We like taking photos that we're done, post it to social media and show
off the great workmanship that our professionalcraftsmen install every day. So again,
if you call, we're not highpressure sales. We're going to get you
a proposal. We're going to makesure we have this job scope correct for
your home, you know, tomeet anexceed code, so you know you

(16:52):
can be confident that that investment isgoing to be a great investment. For
your home. Awesome. Now beforeI let you go, so busy season
for you guys, when does thatrun? I'm sure you do work most
of the year, right, Yeah, we do work year round, but
it really starts to pick up whenthe weather breaks, you know, into
March, beginning of April, dependingon the weather right now, would be

(17:15):
our highest production numbers that we berunning would be you know here until probably
September October. I want to bringthis up. So you mentioned deck's bathroom,
remodeling, windows, siding, roofing. You guys do a lot,
but you said specialize. Is therecertain things you specialize in? You said
different locations, right, yeah,So if you're in Mansfield area, Mansfield,

(17:36):
Ashton here in county, you know, Ashland County, Richland County,
Crawford County, you know those surroundingcounties. We do bathrooms in those locations.
And we're really good at the reallythe ones that are being neglected a
really long time because of the peoplewe have on staff, so licensed guys
that are licensed to redo the plumbing, license to redo the electric, so

(17:57):
we can do the heavy lifting onthose really bathrooms that would need a lot
of attention. And you know thatWe're going to be able to handle any
problem that we run into. Butyeah, every location, you know,
roofing, siding, windows, anddecks. We concentrate on the exterior of
your home on those other locations, and we have rubber ice shingles that are

(18:18):
available for like really cold climates ifyou need it's a roof installed when it's
really cold. You know, wedo metal roofing. We have composite siding
that we just rolled out about threeyears ago. We really love that product.
It doesn't work, it looks reallygood on the on the house and
it's insulated too, so it's insulatedcomposite side, so it keeps your house
warm. In windows, you know, we offer great energy star rated windows

(18:42):
that we install. So a lotof people call us if they need a
combination of a couple things done, and they like, I want one contractor
I don't want to have the rooferblaming the sider for this or that,
or we have a leak and they'repointing fingers at each other. Our customers
tell that to us all the time, and because a lot of times it
has some bad experience with you hiremultiple contractors, so they just want one

(19:03):
company to do it. That way, you know, if something there is
an issue, they know who tocall. So yeah, we do a
ton of roofing and signing combinations oreven a roofing siding window combinations. We've
got great financing options, so monthlypayments are available for folks that want to
get something done. Pretty attractive interestrates too. Usually we're better than the

(19:25):
banks even on interest rates. Sowe have a couple lenders that we work
with. Awesome, great story abouta great local company in bow Lacey Construction.
As we are chatting with their coowner, Kevin Lacy, this week's
CEO, you should know, allright, So as I let you go,
we brought this up earlier for somebodythat didn't catch it. If they
want to get in contact, maybethey're they're looking to work for you guys,

(19:47):
maybe they want to have a projectdone. You said you can stop
in the office, you call, you go to the website right anyway to
kind of get as I would say, get the ball rolling on something.
Yeah, we really want you tocall us. We really want you to
stop by. We really want youto go to the website, Like,
don't be afraid to reach out.Message us on Facebook, on Instagram,
on Twitter. We would love tohear from you. Awesome. So again,

(20:07):
all the information at Bowlacyconstruction dot com. The phone number eight hundred two
sixty six ninety nine sixteen. Whereare you located at by the way in
Mansfield? Where's the office? Act? Yeah? So Ashland Road is the
easiest way. Who are to sayit? So it's it's technically it's right
on the Ashland Richland County line. It's a Mansfield address. It's technically inn
Ashland County base. Take thirty toAshland Road which is forty two and you're

(20:30):
going to Ashland. When you getabout five minutes down the road, we're
down there on the left sank yep. I've seen it on my way to
broadcast games when I'm headed over toAshland. Here areno or community studio.
Well, terrific story this morning learningabout a great local company. Again.
Kevin Lacy of bow Lacy Construction,co owner and this week's CEO, you
should know we thank you so muchfor coming in. Enjoyed the visit and

(20:52):
we wish you continued success. Awesome. Thanks for having me. Kevin Lacy,
co owner of Bowl Lacey contru Diroduction, the CEO you should know,
read a bio, see a photo, and hear the extended interview at wm
A n FM dot com. Leadingmeans having a vision and sharing it with
others. I'm John Roby of RFMIInsurance. We're excited to bring you this
