Sprang Smith Insurance Agency.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Good morning and thanks for coming in.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Good morning, Aaron.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
All right, great to learn about you. So I always
begin this program with everybody the same way. Maybe they
just moved to north central Ohio and they're just hearing
about the Sprang Smith Insurance Agency. I know you guys
do a lot, it was on your website, offer a lot,
a lot of great services. But tell us exactly about
you guys. Sure.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Yeah. So we are a full service independent insurance agency
located in Nashville, Ohio, and been around for seventy five
years now, started in nineteen fifty as the Marshall Smith Agency,
and I have a whole history behind all that. But
we do a lot of folkocus on commercial insurance, but
we do a ton of home and auto insurance, life
(01:04):
and health and so really a broad range of services
in the insurance world that we can help people with.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
So this year twenty twenty five, one of those big years.
You mentioned your number seventy.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Five, right, yeah, seventy fifth anniversary.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
So in terms of you say you're located in Ashland,
tell us exactly where you guys are at in town.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah, we're at three twenty College Avenue, right across the
street from the Ashland University.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, I know exactly where that's been over there to
cover a lot of games over the.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Years, Arrows Eagles, that's right, a great spot.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
A lot of you think about Ashland, you know, I
told you off your talk with the mayor a lot, boy,
so many great things happening in just you know, in town,
the university.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
A lot going on, right, A lot.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Of positive energy and new growth and new opportunities, economic development,
a lot of stuff that we're excited to be a
part of. A community partner.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah. The mayor telling me about you know, you know,
plans to build more homes and all of that. So
just a lot of positive things going on.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Yeah, coming down there down the road.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Yes. Now, as we talk about you specifically, Nate, your
CEO of the spring Smith Insurance Agency, how long have
you been in that CEO role overall?
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Twenty sixteen so almost I guess almost ten years. The
history is Marshall Smith started the agency in nineteen fifty
and Rick Sprain came in the agency in the seventies
I think seventy four, and purchased the agency in eighty
four if I have my years right. And then I
joined the agency in ninety nine and bought in and
(02:32):
became the CEO twenty sixteen, and along with my partner,
Rob wash is also a business partner in the agency.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
So you've been overall with the agency better than twenty
five years.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah, yeah, awesome.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Great learning the story this morning about another great local company.
Our featured CEO this week is Nate Schultz. He's the
CEO of the Spring Smith Insurance Agency. You are based
in Ashland, but you and I were talking. You help
people all over the state and beyond, So could you
give us a little bit of I call it the
reach kind of your coverage area.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah, definitely the highest concentration of our businesses in Nashlan County,
but we do a lot of business from Cleveland and Columbus,
and then really we have clients from New York to Nebraska,
so multiple states and have a pretty far far reach.
But you know, obviously the closer you get to home,
the higher concentration of number of clients and market penetration
(03:29):
and all those kind of things. But pretty wide capability
for people.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Well that's great.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Now in terms of staff members with the agency ballpark
for us, how many roughly do you have?
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yeah, about sixteen employees right now between sales and service.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
And you mentioned if you would share with us a
little bit you kind of did at the start personal business, home, auto, health,
you know, life insurance, you guys do offer a lot.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Yeah, yeah, we really do. You know, have a pretty
high concentration working with businesses, commercial and shurance, but again
a high concentration of home and auto. We have a
life and health department. We do medicare supplements and so yeah,
not too many insurance products that we don't help people with.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, it sounds like you really can help people in
so many different areas, which is a great thing. They
can come to you and you guys can help them
in pretty much anything, right.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
That's right, that's right, And we have people that specialize
in those different areas. So sometimes someone will call me
and say, hey, I need help with this, and that
maybe not be my area of expertise, but I'll refer
them to someone on our staff that can really, you know,
really give them better information than I can.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Well, you mentioned on your staff, it's great to have
so many people specializing in so many areas because somebody
could say, hey, Nate, I need this, and you're like, okay,
we have this person that specializes.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
They are going to take carry you are going to
be great.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
And they'll just run with it. Yeah, take really good
care of people.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Awesome, awesome to hear Nate Schultz the voice you hear
this morning, our featured CEO this week. He's the CEO
of the Spring Smith Insurance Agency. All right, so we've
learned a lot about the organization. How did you kind
of get involved? You mentioned to me you've been better
than twenty five years, and we'll find out where you're
from and all that. When you were going off to college,
did you know exactly this was the route you wanted
(05:06):
to go. No.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yeah, very few people planned to go into insurance, and
so you know, I graduated from Ashton University and we
can get into more detail on that. But Westfield Insurance
was interviewing on campus and I did an interview on campus,
got a second interview up at their home office in
Madinah County and was hired there and worked for them
for about six years before deciding I was in Toledo
(05:28):
in Atlanta and started a family and wanted to kind
of get back closer to my roots and had its
opportunity to join the agency in ninety nine and came back.
Came back then and the rest is history.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
All right, Well, let's learn a little history while we're
talking about Nate Schultz. So you're the CEO of the
spring Smith Insurance Agency. So don't know exactly where you're
from high school. You can tell us about college, So
tell us a bit about yourself.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yeah, I have Ashland connections all throughout my life. I've
had some other out of state experiences as well, but
was born in Ashland at the Meriton Hospital and moved
away to Indiana for a few years when my dad
was in grad school growing up, and then came back
to Ashland. He had an opportunity at the Ashland Seminary
as a professor there and so we moved back. I
(06:17):
graduated from Ashland High School, went to Ashland University. I
had a cup of coffee at Miami of Ohio, but
graduated from Ashland and then hired on with Westfield. So
that's kind of my background.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
So an arrow and an eagle both.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Okay, and you and I we're talking about Ashland University.
You're so close. I mean when you went to Ashland,
I mean I look at the facilities.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Now.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
I was talking to somebody the other day and well,
I know it was it was somebody who played football
for Fred Martinelly over at Ashland University when it was
still the last year it was still called Ashland College.
And I mentioned to him, now he was an offense
and he was a center. He told me he cannot
believe the facilities that they have at a United They
I mean they when you think about V two, they
(07:00):
are I mean they were right there with anybody in.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
The country Division two. Yeah, definitely the stadium, relatively new,
beautiful stadium and the fieldhouse that they've recently built.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Yeah awesome.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Well, Nate, is we talk about you? We found out
you an Ashland guy. But I think you mentioned to
me going to tell us a little bit about the
family then too, right.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Yes, yes, I'm married, have three beautiful grandchildren and two
adult children that are married, and yeah, all of those
people are the center of my heart.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Awesome. That is great to hear. I can tell why
the smile on your face. That is a big, big deal. Now,
how about wife? I'm sure could involve you know, you know, grandkids.
You know, things are busy. What you do in your
spare time?
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Hobbies?
Speaker 2 (07:41):
So when you're away from work, what do you like
to do?
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Yeah, love to travel. I like to play golf. Don't
play as much as I'd like to, and that affects
my handicap. But I do a little bit of jogging. Again,
not quite as much as I should or want to,
but I try to stay in shape a little bit.
But yeah, those are kind of the main hobbies for me.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
I'll ask you about this as we kind of get
back to work. I got a few more questions for
Nate this morning, but a great conversation. Our featured CEO
this week is Nate Schultz.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
He's in studio.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
He's CEO of the spring Smith Insurance Agency. They are
based in Ashland, but they help people all over the
state and beyond across the country.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Is there a busier time? This popped in moment?
Speaker 2 (08:22):
You know for you guys, you know, because you offer
so much, you know, you guys have such a great reach.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Is there a busier time than others over the course
of a year.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
I would say it feels like it's busy year round
for us. There is probably a stretch in the summer
where it slows down a little bit, maybe August, but
again then we have people on vacation, so we're covering
for each other, and so it really is pretty busy
throughout the year. I've talked to other agent friends and
other agencies that do have busier times if they have
a lot of renewals on January first or something like
(08:51):
that that they have to deal with. But our stuff,
it feels like it's pretty spread out throughout the year.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Is we talk about your organization. If somebody your voice
today and they're like they want to look into you know,
we mentioned personal business, you know, home, auto, health, life, insurance,
how do they kind of get the process started with
you guys? Phone call, website, I mean to get that
initial appointment all that set up, but walk us through
if somebody wants to reach out.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
Yeah, those are probably the two best places to reach.
Our website is sprangsmith dot com and that's sprang with
an E not an I, and right there. You've got
emails and phone number contacts. You can even send out
a request for information through the website there on your
phone or on your on your computer. And our phone
number is four one nine two eight nine three three
(09:38):
one zero.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
So again, S P R. E.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
N G. Sprangsmith dot com. All one word, all one
word dot com perfect. All right. So, last thing I'll
bring up, And I kind of love this question. I
always save it for last, and I always worded this
way kind of brag about you. You know how you
guys specialize in so much, you know, what makes you special,
what makes you unique? Why you know somebody should reach
out and say, hey, get in contact with us here
(10:03):
at the Springsmith Insurance Agency. So what kind of makes
you guys unique it if you would.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Yeah, a couple of things. One, I did want to
mention that we are celebrating in our seventy fifth year
this year, and so I think that, you know, speaks
to the longevity and the consistency that we've had for
the community over the years and been there. And to
celebrate on June sixth, from one to four in our
parking lot, We're going to have the Goldberry Coffee trailer
(10:28):
and wits frozen custard. It's open to the general public,
so from one to four on June six, if you
want to swing by, whether you're a customer or not,
we'd love to say hello and offer you a free
coffee or a frozen custard.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
All right, I've had the guy in from Goldberry with
the coffee. Yeah, I know, that's very popular, right, very
good coffee. So that's a nice thing for you guys.
You mentioned, you know, seventy five years that's a huge
milestone and be able to celebrate with people.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
That's right, that's right. But I would also say, you know,
our people I think I'm sure everybody says, but you know,
our people really set us apart. We're very a little
bit old school and very hands on with our clients.
We spend a lot of time tracking down police reports
and reaching out to the other driver in an accident,
you know that maybe our client was involved with a
lot of times it's first time someone's had an accident
(11:17):
when they do, and we do it every day, so
we kind of know where to go to find to
track people down or to get police crash reports, and
so we try to go the extra mile behind the scenes.
People don't necessarily always see it, and we're not always
perfect at it, but we really tried to make an
extra effort and that's not just me, the the whole team.
I feel like, really it makes that a priority and
(11:38):
really is client focused.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
You mentioned going the extra mile and you know, in
one on one having you know, really, I think a
lot of people would appreciate I'll use the word thorough
that you guys are because you think about it when
you're you know, home auto business, like you know, health
and everything with insurance. You know, you guys kind of
have their back and I think for a lot of
people they hear that, hey, you.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Know, we're gonna you know, we're gonna go through everything.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
I think that's something that really you should make sure
people know that you guys are right, that's great.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
Right, Well, peace of mind is number one in our business,
and we want people to feel like that they have
that when they're consulting with us about what to do.
And the insurance market has been challenging, very challenging the
last few years, and to have that consultant, that kind
of liaison between the client and the insurance companies to
help navigate you know what is my best strategy? Am
(12:27):
I with the best company? Or should I raise my deductibles?
Or what can I do to control costs and match
my risk tolerance to the coverage that I'm buying? And
that's what we try to do.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
All right, terrific this morning.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Now, before I let you go, Nate, again, let's throw
out the website and the phone number if somebody wants
to get in contact.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yes, website is Springsmith dot com, s P R, E,
N G, S M, I, T H dot com and
the phone number four one nine two eight nine three
three one zero.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
All right, terrific conversation this morning. Learning about our featured
