En su mayoría malévolos se encuentran en formas diferentes y con diferentes poderes para controlar a los humanos y son un tema popular en las obras de arte talladas especialmente por parte del pueblo Makonde de Tanzania. Entre los shetani se encuentra el Popobawa, que es el nombre de un espíritu maligno que apareció por primera vez en la isla de Pemba, Tanzania, en 1995 y fue el foco de un estallido de histeria colectiva que se extendió desde Pemba a Unguja, la isla principal del Archipiélago de Zanzíbar, y recorrió su leyenda a través de Dar es Salam y otros centros urbanos en la costa de África Oriental.
