Have you ever discovered a wine that completely redefines what you can expect at its price point? That's exactly what happened when I uncorked the Decoy Chardonnay 2023, a remarkable white wine that offers complexity and craftsmanship typically reserved for bottles costing twice as much.

This surprisingly sophisticated Chardonnay showcases the brilliance of multi-regional grape sourcing, pulling from Sonoma (40%), Central Coast (30%), Mendocino (13%), and Yolo County (8%) to create a fascinating tapestry of flavors. The wine opens softly on the palate before expanding into vibrant notes of tangerine, nectarine, anjou pear, and subtle tropical fruits, all supported by refreshing acidity that gives the wine excellent structure without overwhelming sharpness.

What truly sets this bottle apart from other value-priced Chardonnays is the meticulous oak treatment – aged for eight months with 30% in new French oak undergoing malolactic fermentation. This technique, rarely seen at the $15 price point, introduces gentle creaminess and subtle vanilla that complements rather than dominates the fruit character. The result is a beautifully balanced white with enough body to stand up to flavorful dishes like Thai cuisine or grilled seafood, yet refreshing enough for casual summer sipping.

Though Duckhorn Vineyards sold to a private equity firm for a staggering $2 billion two years ago, the winemaking quality remains impeccable, with only four winemakers steering the ship throughout their nearly 50-year history. This Decoy offering proves that exceptional wine experiences don't necessarily require premium prices – sometimes the best values come from established producers who apply their expertise to entry-level bottlings. Next time you're looking for a versatile summer white with genuine character, this $15 wonder deserves a spot in your glass.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hey, it's Domain Dave , cheapwinefindercom.
We're doing another summerwhite wine today Decoy
Chardonnay 2023.
Found it for $14.99.
It does list on Duckhorn'swebsite for $20.
Duckhorn's website for $20.

(00:24):
So this isn't a cheap wine, butit is a value price and that is
their entry level to what theydo.
Duckhorn has been around since1976.
They're an established Merlotproducer, one of the best Merlot
producers in the world.
Two years ago though not toolong ago they got bought out by

(00:48):
a private equity company, butthe winemakers are still doing
it.
Duckhorns are no longer thecompany.
They were there for decades, but it's now owned by an equity
company.
I think they're doing somedifferent things.
They're getting rid of some ofthe brands.

(01:13):
I'm not all sure.
I know they're looking to movesome vineyards that they didn't
need.
There's trouble going on inCalifornia and Washington.
Wine just winds down, but itdoesn't mean that wine isn't
good.
So what do we have with thisdecoy Chardonnay 2023?
It's a duck decoy, because duckhorn that's their actual name
and this is a Chardonnay.

(01:34):
It's from about 40% from Sonoma, 30% from the Central Coast,
about 13% from Mendocino, 8%from Yolo County, which is the
northern part of the CentralValley.
From the Central Valley, there's Clarksburg and there's

(01:55):
Lodi, and then the northern partof that is Yolo, and the 8%
they don't know.
I don't know how, they don'tknow, but I'm gonna take a sip.
It's soft on the palate andthen it kind of bursts with

(02:19):
flavor, which is really a nicething, having all those
different locations where thegrapes come from.
It's 100% Chardonnay.
All those grapes coming fromthe different growing regions
all have differentcharacteristics.
So you put them all togetherand all of a sudden you've got
different flavors competing yourglass, depending on how the

(02:39):
winemaker decides to balance thewine out, how to get a little
bit of this and a little bit ofthat, and it's pretty nice.
Another thing that's kind ofinteresting this is an oak for
eight months, but 30% of it isnew French oak and that 30% of

(02:59):
the new French oak it'smalolactic fermentation.
Malolactic fermentation iswhere they change the acid in
the wine, the actual naturallyoccurring wine, from tart to
rounded lactic lactose and thathelps bring the oak influence
into the wine.
And then the other 70% isneutral.

(03:20):
Neutral doesn't give you anyflavoring French oak.
Neutral.
Neutral doesn't give you anyflavoring French oak, but it
gives you a little bit of adifference than stainless steel.
Stainless steel is airtight.
Oak barrel is watertight butit's not completely airtight, so
that little bit of air in therechanges things.

(03:40):
So you get this really nice.
A lot of, you know, 30% newFrench oak is kind of.
You don't see that in thesevalue price wines.
This is $20 wine, according tothem.
There you see it more.
But usually they try to do abalance a little bit here, a
little bit.
They know first, you second use, third use that type of thing.

(04:01):
But here you getting that oak,but it's french oak and french
oak is more subtle.
French oak doesn't, uh, reallybring the chocolate and vanilla
and all those things thatamerican oak does that people
really like.
I'm gonna take a sip, though Ido get a little bit of creamy

(04:22):
vanilla.
And this wine has flavor.
I mean it really does haveflavor.
It's got really great acidity.
The acidity gives it enoughstructure that all these flavors
unfold.
I mean I was getting tangerine, nectarine, anjou, pear, apple,
lemon, you know, tropical fruit.
I was getting all these flavors.
None of them jump out, none ofthem are ripe and juicy.

(04:45):
This isn't a fruit bomb, thishas just got a lot of flavor.
And I know since it's got eightmonths of oak, and new oak too,
for 30% of it.
You know a lot of people think,oh no, it's going to be a butter
bomb.
No, it's not that either.
The the oak is actually kind ofuh, subtle.
I mean, that little bit ofcream does come in and yeah, and
you get the spice.

(05:06):
But it's really nice.
And one other thing about itit's got a body.
So if you're looking to, um, awhite wine to pair with some
food, something outside, whatever you're going to have,
maybe shrimp on the grill orwhatever this thing has enough

(05:26):
body to stand up to some fairlyintense foods Thai food, chinese
food.
You want some spice?
Well, this will cool it down, and you know.
So take a sip and get inspired, you know.
So it's a good bottle of wine.
It's a nice Chardonnay.
It's not the same old, same old.
It's got a few productiondetails.

(05:47):
You know that a $10 bottlewouldn't have, and it shows.
And it shows in the price andit shows in the flavor.
So there you go.
This is the Decoy Chardonnay2023 from Duckhorn.
The Duckhorns aren't aroundanymore, but the winemakers I
think they're only on theirfourth winemaker in 50 years.

(06:08):
So the quality still goes on,even though it is oh.
And when they sold Duckhorn, they sold for $2 billion.
So there you go.
Domain Dave, cheap Wine Ffinder.
Keep it cheap.
Adios, I'll be talking to youbye.
