Curious about kosher wines but don't know where to begin? Join Domain Dave as he uncorks the Twin Suns Lodi Mevushal Cabernet Sauvignon 2023, a $10 Trader Joe's find that offers fascinating insights into the intersection of wine and religious tradition.

This episode goes beyond typical tasting notes to explore how religious requirements shape winemaking approaches. Dave demystifies the concept of "Mevushal" wines – kosher bottles that undergo a special pasteurization process, making them acceptable for anyone to handle while maintaining their religious significance. For the wine-curious who've wondered about kosher wines but hesitated to explore them, this episode provides the perfect introduction.

The Twin Suns Cabernet itself represents an interesting departure from modern California wine styles. With more pronounced tannins and oak spice than your typical fruit-forward Cab, it's crafted specifically to complement food rather than stand alone as a sipper. As Dave discovers, this traditional approach transforms dramatically when paired with cheese, allowing its fruit characteristics to shine through while taming its harder edges.

Whether you're observing religious traditions or simply expanding your wine horizons, this episode offers valuable insights into an often-overlooked category of wines. From the fascinating family story behind Twin Suns to practical advice on finding and enjoying kosher wines, Dave delivers another informative episode that proves great wine experiences don't require emptying your wallet. Next time you're at Trader Joe's, grab this bottle and a cheese plate, and discover how a $10 wine can create a memorable tasting experience. Speaker 1 (00:03):
hey, welcome domain Dave.
Cheap wine better calm againdoing value priced wines.
We write them up on the cheapwine founder calm website and
then we add to it with thepodcast and that's where we're
at now.
Today we've got a once a littlebit different, because it's not
just about enjoying a bottleone.

(00:23):
This one has some kind of umreligious significance to it,
which I'll get into.
I found this at trader joe's forabout 10 bucks.
Um, it's the twin sons lodi, mishuvial, cabernet sauvignon
2023.
It's a kosher wine andMishuviel means that this wine

(00:47):
has been pasteurized, it's beenflash heated and flash cooled
and by doing that processanybody can drink it Just
strictly kosher wine.
And I'm not Jewish.
I don't know a lot about therituals and what goes into the
religion, so I'm not going toget too much into it because I

(01:09):
don't want to say anything wrong.
I want to be respectful to that.
But you kind of need to knowthis talking about the wine,
because it's a part of the wineand I think if it's strictly
just kosher for a religioussetting, it can only be handled
by certain people, you know, andhaving people who are not

(01:35):
proper makes the wine uncleanand that type of thing.
But if you do this Mabuchal, Ithink that's how it is Once you
boil it, it becomes okay foranybody.
So this is kind of like, youknow, being open in the religion
rather than no, you can't haveit.
Yes, you can, and this is alsoone you don't need to be any

(02:00):
particular religion to buy andenjoy.
I think I got it at TraderJoe's any particular religion to
buy and enjoy.
I think I got it at TraderJoe's, and it's not only Trader
Joe's, it's all over on theInternet.
They sell it everywhere and theprice for this is all over the
place.
So I don't know what to tellyou about that, but it's from
Lodi.
I mean, a lot of kosher winesare actually from Israel.

(02:24):
Israel is a big wine market.
The drinkers in Israel not allthe wines are kosher.
There there's people who arenot very Orthodox really
Orthodox, just plain.
Wine does well there, and a lotof their wines, israeli wines,
are just the same as everybodyelse, without the religious
significance.
So I'm going to take a sip and Ishould say that as a religious

(02:59):
wine.
Even you know it is meant forthe meal.
I mean, you're breaking bread, you're doing those things, and
this is a wine that's made tohave the meal.
I mean you're breaking bread, you're doing those things, and
this is a wine that's made tohave the meal with you.
I mean most value priceCabernet Sauvignon, especially
this is from California, this isLodi, but it's still the same.
It's still kosher.
They're made to be sipped.
I mean, if you have food withthem, well fine, but it's not

(03:20):
necessary.
Where this wine is a little bitmore old school, it's going to
have more tannins, it's going tohave a little more oak spice.
It's going to need some food tokind of blend everything
together.
And once you have the blendthere, once you have the food
and the wine, then it makessense.
But strictly, as a sipping wineit's not my favorite and I

(03:41):
haven't had a meal with it.
But the flavors are good.
I mean there are some strongspices, there are some
harder-edged things there, allof which would go away with a
meal, but it's still a decentwine.

(04:06):
Like I said, I wasn't strictlya huge fan of the harder edge
things, but the softer, fruit, forward things are really nice.
So it's a wine that I meanwhich would actually make it
with a meal even better, becausethose harder edge things would
be softened and the fruit wouldcome through.
Um, yeah, that would makethings really a lot better.

(04:26):
So if you're interested in, orare seeing kosher wines and
didn't really know what they are, well, I'm probably not gonna
be telling you what it is.
I'm not sure too, and I don'twant to be spreading false
information about it.
You know about someone'sreligion and the wines, but the
wine here is from two brotherswho make wine.

(04:49):
They're known for their Syrahsand the twin sons label they
made it for.
The son is a importer, distributor and producer of
kosher wines, and then they'reactually two twin sons.
It's all in the family there.
So this is an interesting wine.

(05:10):
It's kosher.
If you haven't had kosher, youcan find it at Trader Joe's for
$10 and see what it's about.
If you do get it, get a plateof.
You know, trader Joe's has nicecheese selection.
Get a plate of cheese.
This would change everything.
I mean of.
You know, trader Joe's has nicecheese selection.
Get a plate of cheese.
This would change everything.
I mean.
Actually, you should do it allthe time.
I should do it all the time too, but I got my computer and
everything sitting around me andI'll have cheese everywhere.

(05:32):
So there you go.
This is the Twin Suns LodiMavushal I think that's how you
pronounce it M-E-V-U-S-H-A-L.
Cabernet Sauvignon from Lodi,2023.
It's interesting, it's wellworth drinking.
If you're interested in kosherwines and this is the lesser

(05:55):
version this is the one thateverybody can have.
This is a very good place tostart.
It's inexpensive and especiallyif you go to Trader Joe's I saw
it for $7 or $8 or more elseplaces but it's a good place to
kind of learn about kosher wines.
What else is there thisseason's coming up?
There's religious holidayscoming up.

(06:15):
I think there's one on.
This is Monday.
I think Tuesday the 23rdthere's one.
So adios, keep it cheap.
Domain Day we did the Twin SunsLoda Boucher Cabernet Sauvignon
2023.
It's a kosher wine, it'sinteresting, it's worth drinking
and I'll be talking toeverybody in a couple of days.
Adios, keep it cheap.
