(02:13):
and so we want to show ourappreciation, so I try to do
that every week.
Now in our company spotlightthis week, I want to mention
Wegman Food Markets.
They're based here in the US.
When Robert Wegman took over thesmall little grocery retailer
(02:33):
from his family, he brought avery important I'll call it a
spiritual philosophy, and hebrought this with him.
When he came in and he tookover at Wegmans.
He said never think aboutyourself, always think and help
others, always think about andhelp others, and that was a
(02:54):
philosophy that has drivenWegmans throughout the years.
The first thing that he didwhen he took over, he raised
everybody's pay that worked forthe company, and then he didn't
stop there.
He created a scholarshipprogram and actually since 1984,
when this scholarship programhas started, they've paid out
(03:15):
over $110 million and they'vehelped more than 35,000
employees.
They are one of the only 12companies that can say that
they've made Fortune's list of100 top companies to work for
since that magazine started thatlist in 1998.
(03:37):
Since 1998, they've made thatlist of the top 100 companies to
work for in the world andthey've made that list.
There's only 12 companies thathave made that list of the top
100 companies to work for in theworld and they've made that
list.
There's only 12 companies thathave made that list every year
since they started it and theygive millions of dollars to
Christian schools, they donatemillions of pounds of healthy
food to local communities eachyear, and it's all because of
(04:01):
that philosophy never thinkabout yourself, always help
others.
So we say to Wegmans keep it up,folks.
You guys are doing a great joband you're really being a
witness out there in the worldas to what a godly business
really is.
Now I want to say this I wantto say that whether you're an
entrepreneur, whether you're amanager, or maybe an aspiring
(04:26):
professional or a business owner, it's so very, very important
that you begin to cultivateleadership that's within you.
You need to cultivate that, youneed to grow that, and it needs
to be rooted in faith andintegrity and service.
And so that's what I want totalk about today.
(04:47):
I want to talk about developingthat Christian leader that's
within you.
And how do you develop that?
How do you move that forward?
I want us to understand theimportance of doing that, of
developing that godly leaderwithin you.
The Bible says in Joshua 1 and 9, it says be strong and
(05:10):
courageous, do not be afraid, donot be discouraged, for the
Lord, your God, will be with youwherever you go.
And then in Matthew 20, 26through 28, it says whoever
wants to become great among you,you must first be servant, just
as the Son of man did not cometo be served but to serve.
(05:31):
Now these scriptures, theyreally lay a foundation, a
foundation for leading withcourage and humility and with a
servant's heart.
And that's not just to be donein certain things.
You know we tend to be peoplethat can compartmentalize our
lives.
You know we take certain partsof our lives and we put it into
(05:52):
its own little apartment orcompartment, and you know they
don't connect, they don't haveanything to do with each other.
But when we're talking aboutyou developing as a Christian
leader, it should touch everypart of your life, every area,
whether it be your professionalcareer, whether it be your
(06:14):
business life, your professionalcareer, whether it be your
business life, whether it be anyother, your family life it
should touch every aspect ofyour life.
And so what is Christianleadership?
Well, christian leadership itinvolves guiding other people
with a heart that's reallyaligned with God's will for your
(06:35):
life.
It integrates a lot ofspiritual maturity, so that's a
big part of it.
You know we've got to bespiritually mature if we're
going to be effective leaders.
You've got to have some verypractical business acumen.
It prioritizes faith and ethicsand service over personal gain.
(06:56):
You know, jesus is a greatexample of how we should be
developing ourselves as aChristian leader, especially in
the entrepreneurial context.
So what are some of the keycharacteristics of a good,
(07:19):
strong, spiritual and Christianleader?
Well, first of all, faith.
Faith is one of thecharacteristics.
They trust God.
They trust God for his plan, they trust God for provision.
They trust God to give themguidance and direction.
They have a complete trust inGod.
Another is integrity they acthonestly, they act justly.
(07:43):
And another is servanthood.
So they put others first beforethey put themselves.
They have courage.
They stand very, very firm whenthey have to make faith-based
decisions, when they have tomake decisions kind of like
Daniel.
You know, in the book of Daniel, you know you read about the
life of Daniel and he was aperson that had, you know, great
(08:06):
courage.
You know he stood firm in a lotof the decisions that he made,
which one got him thrown into alion's den.
One got you know.
Then the three Hebrew childrengot thrown into the fiery
furnace for doing the same thing, because they had courage in
their leadership.
Another is stewardship, becauseyou've been given into your
hands certain resources.
(08:27):
If you're a business ownerespecially, you have certain
resources.
Well, god expects you to be agood steward over those
resources.
Well, god expects you to be agood steward over those
resources.
You are responsible for thosethings, and you can read Luke,
chapter 16.
You can read that message thatJesus spoke about when he gave
the parable of the talents andthe responsibility as a steward,
(08:50):
and that falls on us too.
And then, of course, discernment.
Discernment is a greatleadership characteristic, but
as a believer, as a Christianleader, it really helps reflect
the Spirit's role in helping youas a believer, and it helps you
to distinguish truth fromfalsehood.
(09:10):
You know, john 16, 13 says butwhen he, the Spirit of truth,
comes, he will guide you intoall truth.
So the Holy Spirit willactually lead you and guide you
and give you discernment of whento make decisions.
I can't tell you, in my lifeand in my professional career,
there've been so many times thatin my mind, in my natural
(09:30):
thinking, I thought this is thedecision that I need to make,
and the spirit of the Lord wouldspeak to me and say no, even
though this doesn't make sense, this is what you need to do.
And then I would step out infaith, believing that I'd heard
from the Lord and it wouldalways be proven to be the right
decision to have made and thatthe wrong decision was the one I
was about to make.
(09:51):
So you need to have thatdiscernment, and so those are
some great characteristics.
So you need to have thatdiscernment, and so those are
some great characteristics.
So you start first of all byhaving a self-assessment how do
you see these traits in yourcurrent leadership role?
Do you see them at all?
And maybe you take thesecharacteristics that I just
(10:14):
mentioned and maybe write themon paper and then rate yourself
one through five, five beingthat you've got that character
down, that it's just a part ofyou, there's no problem.
Or one being you need a lot ofwork on it and you need to try
to do better on that particularcharacter characteristic and
then maybe identify an area thatyou need to grow in.
(10:35):
Just maybe try one, say, forexample, stewardship, and you
really get a hold of that forthe next 30 days and make that a
priority.
Put a lot of effort into that.
Ask yourself have you grown inareas of godly leadership in the
last year or six months?
Because let me tell you, ifyou're not growing, you're dying
(10:58):
.
If you're not growing, you'redying.
If you're not learning, you'redying.
I'm just telling you that as agodly Christian leader, you
should be growing.
You should never look back sixmonths from now, a year from now
, and look back and saynothing's happened.
I've not grown at all.
(11:19):
There is a systemic issue withthat in and of itself.
So you should always be tryingto grow.
So always look at yourself andthen identify that one area that
you can work on for 30 days andthen again reassess.
But you should look at thesecharacteristics in your life
every six months and just seewhere you're at.
(11:39):
You know Psalms 139 and 23,.
You know David.
King David said examine me, god, know my mind, test me, know my
thoughts.
He was self-assessing himselfwith the help of God there, but
that's what he was wanting to do.
Now what are some steps thatyou can do to develop yourself
(11:59):
as a leader, as a Christianleader?
Well, first you need to deepenyour spiritual foundation.
All right, so you've got tocommit yourself to daily prayer
and Bible study.
I would start out.
If you're not doing it now, I'dstart out with 15 minutes every
day.
Just 15 minutes a day to startwith.
(12:19):
If you're not doing that on aregular basis, just start with
15 minutes.
If you're doing 15 minutes, do30 minutes and just spend some
time.
How much time is the rightamount of time?
I can't answer that for you.
Over my life it's rangedanywhere from 30 minutes to two
hours a day.
There's been different times inmy life where I've needed more,
(12:42):
and then there's been times ofmy life I've done everything I
can to get that 30 minutes in.
So it really depends on whereyou're at.
I'm not here to judge you on howlong that should be, but I
would say, start by committingto prayer and Bible study for at
least 15 minutes every day, andI would encourage you to do it
when you start as you do it andthen have some kind of a Bible
(13:06):
reading plan.
Right, get you a devotionalbook.
Oswald Chambers has a greatdevotional called my Utmost for
His Highest.
That's a great devotional there.
Utmost for His Highest that's agreat devotional.
There are business devotionalsfor business leaders.
You can find those on Amazon.
You can also use a Biblereading plan that you can go
(13:28):
online.
It's called you Y-O-U version, you version, and you can find a
reading plan.
Try to read the Bible throughin a whole year.
It's not that hard, it's reallynot.
So what I would do is I wouldstart by praying and asking God
to help you shape yourleadership.
(13:50):
Like Lord, guide me to leadwith your wisdom.
Maybe you write this out andyou really put some thought into
it of what you really need, butthat would be something you
could do.
Step two would be to cultivateservant leadership.
We've talked about servantleadership on this podcast
before.
What is it?
How do you become a servantleader?
What are some things that youcan do.
(14:11):
But I think it's important ifyou're going to develop the
Christian leader within youthat's in you.
I think that you've got toidentify a need in your
workplace, in your community, inother words, identify something
where that you can exerciseservant leadership.
You know, maybe it's mentoringsomebody, maybe it's
(14:32):
volunteering locally, you know.
Just, you know where you canserve without expecting any kind
of reward.
I would encourage you to readthe book the Servant by James
Hunter, great book.
But I would really encourageyou to maybe plan one act of
service this month and thenjournal its impact on your
(14:55):
leadership service this monthand then journalist impact on
your leadership.
And again, this would besomething that you are
volunteering for and you'retrying to do with expecting
nothing in return.
So you want to cultivateservant leadership.
Step three would be to buildsome ethical decision-making
skills.
You've got to have some ethicalskills, or ethical decision
(15:16):
skills when it comes to being aChristian leader.
You've got to apply really afaith-based decision framework.
You need to pray, you got toseek the word of God.
You know I've got a Bible thatis a businessman's Bible.
That's what it's called.
It's a businessman's Bible andin that Bible it's got all kinds
(15:36):
of topics and if you'restruggling, if you've got to
make a decision on something, you go into the topics, you try
to find that topic and more thanlikely you're going to find it.
And then what it's going to dois it'll tell you the page
number to go to and it will giveyou all the scriptures that
pertain to that particularsubject.
And it's a really great way tofind out what the Bible says
(16:00):
about a particular situationthat you're going through.
But that's a Christianbusinessman's Bible and it's
just something that I wouldencourage you to have, encourage
you to invest in, because itcan be a great, great help,
because then that way you canreally understand what the Bible
says that you need to do andhelp you make those decisions.
(16:21):
And maybe you want to consult agood Christian mentor, whoever
that may be he may be anotherChristian business leader, he
may be your pastor, he may be afriend, somebody you look up to,
somebody that's been a mentorto you.
And then you want to evaluatethose decisions that you've made
.
When you know you've made agood, godly decision, you can
(16:43):
look back at that and say, okay, how did that impact things?
How did things work out throughthat decision, and so I would
encourage you to do that.
There's a great book by NormanBowie.
It's a study, basically, ofethical business cases.
It's a book called BusinessEthics.
(17:03):
I would encourage you to getthat book as well.
That's a great book, and all ofthese things I'm sharing with
you, all these additionalresources, are just there to
help you grow, help you to be apart of your growth plan this
year.
So you want to be able todevelop.
Next is step four.
You want to be able to developcourageous leadership.
(17:26):
You want to do that.
You know you want to take boldsteps of faith.
You want to address, maybe, some kind of an ethical concern
that's going on at work and youneed to propose a new initiative
.
But it's going to have to takefaith because it's outside the
normal business world whatyou're going to do.
So you've got to be courageous.
(17:48):
You can reflect, go to Daniel,as I shared earlier.
You can go to Daniel, chaptersix, and reflect on his stand
that he took, maybe, and getsome inspiration from that.
So, as you develop that, how doyou develop your courageous
leadership?
I want to get into this just alittle bit more.
Go a little bit deeper here.
(18:10):
First, you've got to strengthenyour faith foundation.
That's got to be rooted in yourrelationship with God.
If you don't have a real closerelationship with the Lord,
you're missing out.
That's why I share with you tospend time every day in prayer
and in the Word.
And then you've got to act uponhis word.
You can't just read it and knowwhat it says and then you don't
(18:32):
do it.
You've got to act upon it.
But you've got to seek hisguidance.
You've got to seek his guidance.
You know, when, as I readearlier in Joshua, chapter one,
verse nine, says be strong andcourageous, do not be afraid, do
not be discouraged, for theLord, your God, will be with you
wherever you go.
That really gives us a powerfulreminder of his divine support,
(18:52):
and I think you can reflect onthis verse.
You know, when you buildconfidence in God's presence
during these tough decisionsthat you make.
And another way that you can,you know, really develop
courageous leadership is toembrace the biblical examples
we've been talking about, likeDaniel, like Esther, who risked
her life for her people.
(19:13):
These are the kinds of storiesthat really illustrate courage,
and I would encourage you toread a lot of those, even in the
New Testament and they'llencourage you.
A third thing you can do is topractice ethical boldness.
You know, courage in businessoften means that you're standing
for what's right, even whenit's not real popular.
(19:35):
You know you've got to developa real habit of making decisions
based on principles likehonesty and justice, rather than
just making decisions basedupon short-term gains.
You know, for example, ifyou're faced with an unethical
client demand, you've got toprepare a very respectful but a
firm refusal that's grounded, you know, in your values.
(19:58):
And then I would practice indelivering that message.
I would practice before youjust make a phone call, but I
would practice that.
Maybe practice in front ofsomebody so that you can do it
right.
You'll be surprised.
People will respect you.
They may not like it, butthey'll respect you because of
it.
Another thing that you can do isyou need to build your
resilience through adversity, because courage really grows
(20:20):
through overcoming obstacles.
You get courage every time youface a setback Maybe it's a
financial setback or a workplaceconflict and you get through it
and you begin to speakPhilippians 4.13.
I can do all things throughChrist, who gives me strength,
and you begin to persevere.
And then you look back at thosevictories and it just helps you
(20:45):
to build that resilience.
Another thing to do is to seekaccountability and mentorship.
So be accountable and then makesure that you act decisively.
Act decisively and make surethat you do it with prayer.
Always cover it in prayer.
You can't listen, you can'tpray enough.
You can't pray enough.
(21:05):
You can pray 20 hours a day,you can't pray enough.
But make sure that you bathethings in prayer.
All right, so that was stepfour in developing a courageous
leadership.
But step five is you have tomentor and then multiply.
You know, john Maxwell said thepeople closest to me determine
my level of success or failure.
(21:25):
The better they are, the betterI am.
And if I want to go to thehighest level, I can do it only
with the help of other people.
We have to take other peoplehigher and I believe that.
I believe that concept.
So we need to mentor, but thenwe need to multiply ourself.
(21:46):
Winston Churchill, a greathistoric figure from World War
II obviously he was the head ofGreat Britain at the time, prime
minister he said this he saidwe make a living by what we get,
but we make a life by what wegive, and he understood that.
So we need to mentor otherpeople and we need to multiply
(22:07):
ourselves.
And you should never be afraidthat this person will go higher
than you.
You should want them to go to ahigher level than you are.
That's what mentoring is about.
All right, step six you need tolearn to be led by the Spirit.
You've got to be led by theSpirit of God.
You've got to learn His voice.
You have to know His Word inorder to know his voice, because
(22:31):
that's how you get to know himis through his word.
He'll never contradict his word.
If you feel like the Spirit ofthe Lord is speaking to you but
it's a contradiction ofsomething in the Bible, then you
didn't hear from the Spirit ofthe Lord, because he's never
going to conflict with his word.
He's never going to contradicthis word.
You know, romans 8, 14 says forall those who are led by the
spirit, they are the sons of God.
(22:52):
You know, in Galatians, chapterfive, verses 16 through 23,.
It says so.
I say live by the spirit andyou will not fulfill the desires
of the flesh, for what theflesh wants is opposed to the
spirit and what the spirit wantsis opposed to the spirit, and
what the spirit wants is opposedto the flesh.
They are opposed to each other, and so you do not what you want
(23:13):
to do.
But if you are being led by thespirit, you are not under the
law.
Now the actions of the fleshare obvious Sexual immorality,
impurity, promiscuity, idolatry,witchcraft, hatred, rivalry,
jealousy, outbursts of anger, quarrels, conflicts, fractions,
envy, murder, drunkenness, wildpartying and things like that.
(23:36):
I am telling you now, as I havetold you in the past, that
people who practice such thingswill not inherit the kingdom of
God.
But the fruit of the Spirit islove, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
And that's what this passage istalking about.
It's talking about being led bythe Spirit and not being led by
your flesh.
You know the times that I've hadsome of the greatest mistakes
(23:58):
of my life.
It has been when I madedecisions not based upon the
Spirit but based upon my ownthinking and my own flesh.
Those were the times that Ireally look back and I say, boy,
I really blew that particularsituation because I didn't wait
on God.
Maybe I wasn't patient, maybeit was because I thought I knew
(24:18):
better.
But you know, god really doeswant to look after us.
He really does.
So there's a lot of ethicalchallenges in business.
We get pressure to compromisevalues like falsifying reports,
or to meet quotas or things likethat.
We've heard a lot about theterminology of they cook the
(24:38):
books so they didn't practiceethical decisions and they put
false information down in theirfinancial records and it really
caused havoc and a lot of timesit caused the destruction of the
company and the loss of a lotof fortunes that people had
based upon that kind of thing.
(24:58):
So we're going to be challengedin business to do the right
thing.
We've got to lead through a lotof financial uncertainty
sometimes, you know, sometimesthere's economic downturns,
sometimes there's budget cutsand these are the things that
affect business.
You know, the hardest timesthat I ever had in business in
(25:19):
my life was times when an ownerwould come to me, the CEO, and
say Look, this is a tough time.
You've got to give me a coupleplans and you're going to have
to cut back.
And I would have to give a planknowing that there were going
to be certain people that weregoing to have to be terminated
to meet that budget.
I didn't like it.
It was a tough thing to do, butyou have to do it in the right
(25:42):
way and you have to do itethically, and the company that
I had worked for for so manyyears of my life allowed me to
do that.
But those things are going tohappen.
You're going to be challengedwith a lot of workplace conflict
from time to time.
Max Lucado said conflict isinevitable but combat is
optional.
(26:02):
I kind of chuckle at that, butthat can be the case.
You don't have to let conflictget out of hand.
You can handle it in a godlyway.
You know.
Ronald Reagan said peace is notthe absence of conflict, it is
the ability to handle conflictby peaceful means.
I think that's a great quoteand I think that's the way we
need to look at it.
(26:23):
You know we need to make surethat we do that.
You know we're going to bechallenged to balance this
profit and purpose.
Forbes said that the manwithout a purpose is like a ship
without a rudder it's a weight,a nothing, a non-man, and I
think I understand what he wassaying.
(26:43):
But I think we have to havepurpose.
We can't just be about profit.
There has to be a balancebetween profit and purpose.
It's just got to be a priority.
Matthew 6.33 it says but seek yefirst the kingdom and his
righteousness and all theseother things will be added unto
(27:04):
you and given to you as well.
So this verse really encouragesus to prioritize God's kingdom
and his righteousness over thematerial wealth over.
You know promising, you know tohave a certain level of wealth.
You know God lets us know thatthe needs will be met in our
life when we align with hispurpose.
(27:24):
You know profit needs to be atool.
Profit needs to be a tool, notan idol.
You know the 1 Timothy 6 and 10,a lot of people misquote this.
It doesn't say the money.
The Bible never says money isthe root of all evil.
1 Timothy 6 10 says for thelove of money is a root of all
kinds of evil.
Some people eager for moneyhave wandered from the faith.
(27:47):
It's not so much money evil.
Some people eager for moneyhave wandered from the faith.
It's not so much money, it'sabout the love of money.
In other words, are we puttingmoney and profit above
everything else?
It warns us against making thisprofit an ultimate goal.
That shouldn't be our ultimategoal.
It doesn't serve a greaterpurpose.
We need to be in the center ofGod's will and we need to
(28:10):
understand the purpose that Godhas for us.
You know the Bible says Luke 16,13,.
No one person can serve twomasters.
You cannot serve both God andmoney.
You know profit is good, there's nothing wrong with it.
Only it can't rival devotion toGod.
It cannot be its rival.
And then you have stewardshipand generosity.
(28:34):
You know profit should bemanaged as a stewardship
responsibility, right, and youneed to have an ethical pursuit
of profit.
You know an ethical pursuit ofprofit.
You know Proverbs 11 and 1 saysthe Lord detests dishonest
scales, but accurate weightsfind favor with him.
So we don't want to go afterprofit if it's done in an
(28:56):
unethical way.
We need to look at things more.
You know, in an eternalperspective.
You know what is it.
How does it balance out ineternity?
That's really how we have to doit.
So we've got to overcome somechallenges, folks.
I mean that's just going tohappen.
Fear of failure, you know, andif that's the case, if you have
(29:20):
a fear of failure, you just gotto trust God.
You have to trust him and startwith small risks.
Don't do anything large.
