(02:51):
All right, let's jump intotoday's topic.
I'm not going to be doing acompany spotlight this week
because I'm going to be talkingabout some companies throughout
the podcast, so they'll be inthat segment as we go through
this topic that we're going totalk about today.
You know, as Christian businessleaders.
(03:13):
You know we talk about this allthe time.
You know we are stewards ofGod's resources.
You know we're called tomultiply what he has entrusted
to us.
We get that from Matthew, chapter 25, where he talks about
the good stewards and the onesthat he gave the talents to.
And he told him.
He said go out and multiply, goout and multiply.
And so one of the most powerfulprinciples for achieving this
(03:39):
multiplication, thismultiplication process, and one
of the most important thingsthat we need to understand with
regard to that and what we'retalking about today, is
consistency.
Now I know that sounds like, oh,consistency, oh yeah, whatever.
(03:59):
But in reality consistency, youknow, it's just kind of a
steadfast, kind of faithfulaction over time.
But consistency is a lot morethan mere reputation.
You know it kind of operateslike compound interest does in
finance.
You know you can make small, regular investments, but then
(04:23):
they grow exponentially throughreinvestment.
And so today we're going totalk about the compounding
interest of consistency, andwe're going to draw from some
biblical wisdom, some financialanalogies and some practical
business insights.
Practical business insights, but just as compound interest
(04:44):
turns maybe some modest savingsinto some real substantial
growth.
Consistent habits and leadership, consistent habits and
leadership compound to produceextraordinary fruit.
You know strong teams, loyalcustomers, innovative
(05:04):
breakthroughs and eternal impactare just some of the things
that come from consistency, andmy hope is that today's podcast,
through this, is going toreally encourage you to really
put consistency out there infront.
You know research andexperience shows that consistent
(05:28):
leaders outperform inconsistentleaders.
You know in most, all key areas.
You know Time Magazine had anarticle not too long ago and it
showed that research showed thatin very high complexity jobs
(05:49):
maybe professional, maybe salesroles what they found was in 700
percent more than the bottom 10percent of employees within
(06:10):
that company and the differencethat they found was that the
really high producing employeeswere very consistent at what
they did.
Now, I know that you're awarethat becoming the best isn't
easy.
It's just not If you want tobecome the best company out
(06:31):
there of a particular industryor product, or you just want to
be the best at what you do.
It's not easy.
It's not an easy process.
But as Bobby Knight, who was alongtime coach for Indiana
University, he said this onetime and this is so apropos to
what we're talking about.
He said everybody has the willto win.
(06:53):
Few people have the will toprepare to win.
John Maxwell, who has been mymentor and actually I am a
certified trainer with theMaxwell leadership team.
So you know I was taught byJohn Maxwell and I got to tell
(07:15):
you he said one time he saidthat a lot of people come up to
him and ask him and say, man, Ireally like what you do, I want
to do what you do.
I want to teach leadership, Iwant to help people grow.
I want to do what you do.
I want to teach leadership, Iwant to help people grow.
I want to do the same thing.
You know, I see what you do andI really I'm really passionate
about it.
I really want to do what you do.
(07:36):
And John says that he alwayslooks at him and he always says
I know that you want to do whatI do, but are you willing to do
what I did?
Are you willing to do what Idid?
You know I heard John recentlywas talking about you know
people have said you know, hey, you're the foremost leadership
(07:58):
authority in the world and youknow, even when you Google
leadership, john normally comesup to the top of that Google
search.
And he said man, what's it feellike to have that and to get
that kind of accolade.
And he said well, first of allhe said the reason that that
happens is just because I'm oldand I've outlived everybody else
.
And of course he was jokingwhen he said that.
(08:20):
Course he was joking when hesaid that.
But he said to become thecommunicator that I am the great
communicator that he is.
He said that you have tounderstand.
He said I've done this 12,000times and people say, yeah, we
understand that, but how did youget so good at it?
(08:42):
He said 12,000 times.
Yeah, but I'm just trying tofind your secret sauce.
He goes what part of the 12,000times do you not get?
When people talk aboutconsistency, they don't really
get excited about that.
It's not one of those wordsthat you get excited about, but
(09:03):
it's important because there's avalue to consistency.
First of all, consistencyestablishes your reputation.
You know anybody can be goodone time.
They can be good one time, butthey have to be good over and
over and over again.
You know he talks about that.
He's spoken 12,000 times, buthe also tells you that the first
(09:24):
1,000 times he did it heprobably wasn't that good, you
know.
So it's that consistency.
It establishes your reputation.
You know, people are in theHall of Fame because they were
good every day, not just onetime a day.
Consistency is a prerequisite toexcellence.
(09:46):
No one is good the first time.
Like I said, it's kind of likeI go back to my first sermon
that I ever preached.
My wife told me later she saidit was awful, it was horrible.
I didn't think you were goingto make it as a preacher.
Nobody's good coming out of thegate, but it takes consistent
(10:06):
effort.
Consistency provides securityeven to other people, the people
that work with you, the peoplethat are, that are associated
with you.
It provides security whenyou're consistent.
It reinforces your vision andyour values, you know, because
first of all you have tounderstand people do what people
see and people continue to dowhat people continue to see.
(10:31):
So it is so important thatwe're consistent, even when it
comes to our vision and ourvalues.
And then consistency compounds.
It compounds.
You know.
I often ask people in a groupwould you rather me give you
$25,000 in a month or would yoube willing to take a penny?
(10:55):
The first day and the secondday I give you two pennies.
The third day I give you four.
The fourth day, I give youeight and we just keep doubling
those pennies and most peoplesay, well, I give you eight and
we just keep doubling thosepennies and most people say,
well, I'll take the twenty fivethousand.
What they don't realize is thatover that 30 day period, in 30
days, if you start with a pennyand then you just double it
every day, it's over a milliondollars at the end of the 30
(11:17):
days.
And so you just that.
That's the thing about theconsistency compounds, and so
it's important to understandthat.
I've always had a it's kind of asaying that I've had and I've
shared with a lot of oursalespeople through the years
(11:38):
and everything.
And that is, it's a formula, and that is frequency, times.
Competency equals revenue.
You know, I tell the sales reps, you know, if I can teach you
to do the right things that'scompetency and you do it enough
times every day, that'sconsistency Then revenue will
take care of itself.
(11:59):
I don't have to worry aboutthat.
You just have to do the rightthing the right number of times
a day.
To worry about that, you justhave to do the right thing, the
right number of times a day.
Consistency, you know, accordingto Charles Swindoll.
It's the jewel worth wearing,it's the anchor worth weighing,
it's the thread worth weaving.
It's a battle worth winning.
And I think he's right, it'sthat important.
(12:22):
You know, there's some greatbenefits.
There's some great benefits toconsistency.
So one of them is it buildstrust and credibility with other
people.
You know, when you haveconsistent actions, whether it's
ethical decision making orcommunication or service
(12:43):
delivery, it establishes areputation for reliability.
You know, proverbs 10 and 9says whoever walks in integrity
walks securely.
So it's really important tobuild that trust and credibility
.
You're not going to have any ifyou're not consistent.
You know Roy Bennett saidconsistency is the true
(13:07):
foundation of trust.
Either keep your promises or donot make them.
It's important it.
You know one of the otherbenefits that drives really
long-term success.
You know, small, consistentactions.
It doesn't mean you got to do alot, but you do a little bit
every day and you do it everyday, day in, day out, day in,
(13:28):
day out.
It begins to pay.
It begins to pay and you'll getmore long-term success and
it'll just compound over time.
You know another benefit is itreally creates and fosters this
strong, really strong teamculture.
You know, because when you haveconsistent behaviors as a
(13:51):
leader, such as regularencouragement or fair
decision-making or other thingsin that nature.
It really creates a predictable, a very supportive environment
and that reduces turnover.
It boosts morale as employeesfeel valued and they feel secure
(14:11):
.
Another benefit is it enhancesadaptability and innovation,
because consistent routines okay, let's just say daily prayer
for wisdom or weekly strategyreviews it frees up a lot of
mental space for creativeproblem solving.
You know, leaders who maintaindisciplined habits are much
(14:34):
better equipped to adapt to thechallenges without losing focus.
James 1 and 4 says letsteadiness have its full effect,
that you may be perfect, complete, lacking in nothing.
The word steadfast there we'retalking about consistency,
because it really fuels theresilience and the ingenuity.
So be steadfast, be consistent,as James was saying.
(14:56):
So be steadfast, be consistent,as James was saying.
So let's talk about some of thekey biblical verses that I want
to share today.
Matthew 25, 21, again, we knowis the parable of the good
stewards.
And in verse 21, he says Mastersaid to him well done thou,
good and faithful servant.
You have been faithful over alittle, I will set you over much
(15:16):
.
Enter into the joy of yourmaster.
And so, again, he understood.
Even the servant understoodthat in small things, if you're
consistent, it compounds and itbrings about even greater
responsibility in business, consistent ethical decisions and
(15:38):
even in minor things it buildstrust.
That leads to a lot ofopportunities, much like your
interest does when you'reaccruing interest.
On the principle, galatians 6, 7, and 9 says do not be deceived,
god is not mocked, forwhatsoever one sows, that will
he also reap.
And let us not grow weary ofdoing good, for in due season we
(16:02):
will reap if we do not give up.
And again, be consistent.
You don't quit, you don't stop.
You know it's kind of like thefarmer.
He plants, you know, seeds outin the, in the field and then
every the next day he goes upand digs them up and says, hey,
how come these seeds aren'tdoing anything?
I don't understand.
He puts them back in the ground, comes back the next day.
Well, you know these seeds mustnot be right, they must be
(16:23):
defective, because you know I'vecome in here and checked on
them again and they're not doinganything.
You have to be consistent.
You have to be consistent.
You know you have to sowconsistently so that you can
reap a compounded harvest.
You know leaders whopersistently invest in employee
development or even customerservice.
(16:46):
You're going to see exponentialreturns in productivity and
loyalty.
But it takes time and you'vejust got to be consistent.
You can't quit.
Proverbs 13 and 11 says wealthgained hastily will dwindle, but
whosoever gathers little bylittle will increase.
Again, it's consistency.
(17:08):
We're not talking about getrich quick, we're talking about
consistency.
So we have to be consistent.
You know Hebrews 6 and 12 saysso that you may not be sluggish
but imitators of those who, through faith and patience,
inherit the promises.
You've got to be patient, youknow patience.
(17:30):
Inconsistency allows faith toreally compound, allows faith to
really compound.
So business visions that arerealized through years of study
or years of steady effort, that's what we're talking about
here and we see that in a lot ofthe biblical characters, like
(17:51):
Abraham, you know he's verypatient and obedient to see what
God had told him was going tocome to pass.
Came to pass.
So those are our foundational, you know scriptures.
You know exponential growth isso powerful.
You know.
You take small daily habits.
(18:12):
Like I said, they don't have tobe anything big.
Start with small daily habitsand, for example, maybe more
consistent communication andthat builds momentum and over
months this compounds into ahigh trust culture and it
reduces a lot of errors, itboosts and you can increase your
(18:34):
profits by 20 to 30 percentevery year just by being being
consistent in good habits.
You know time time is is reallytime is the multiplier Right.
The longer that consistency ismaintained, the greater the
(18:57):
yield is going to be.
A business that for 10 yearshas had this consistent branding
for new customers, let me tellyou, you have a lot more
customer retention becauseyou've had this consistent brand
(19:17):
that you've been communicatingover and over and over again and
you just basically get brandequity is you know what I would
call that.
You know, for Christians, theHoly Spirit is the compounding
agent.
He's the one that amplifies ourefforts.
You know, 1 Corinthians 3, 6says I planted and Apollos
(19:41):
watered, but God gave the growth.
So prayerful consistencyinvites more than just
multiplication.
It really invites divinemultiplication.
So what are some reallypractical strategies to
harnessing this compoundingconsistency that we're talking
about?
You know to activate it, youknow.
(20:03):
So what you want to do is yougot to focus on the high level
habits, but not only focus.
You got to track your progressand then you rely on God's
strength for perseverance.
You know, we've read somepassages, but what I would do is
I would start by identifyingsome really high impact habits,
(20:24):
you know.
Pinpoint those actions thathave the best compounding
potential.
Daily Bible reading, you know, for wisdom.
Get weekly feedback, have someweekly feedback sessions or
monthly financial reviews.
A lot of companies the last youknow, of course.
I spent 23 years with onecompany until recently, and we
(20:48):
had financial meetings on amonthly basis.
Every month we had a financialmeeting.
We went over all the financialsfor all the departments and we
talked a financial meeting.
We went over all the financialsfor all the departments and we
talked about those things.
So just look for thosehigh-impact habits that you can
be and begin to be consistentwith.
Will Durant said one time.
(21:08):
He said we are what werepeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an actbut a habit.
If you want to become excellent, then you've got to be
consistent, and then you need tocreate some systems within your
life for reinforcement, and youcan use tools like habit
(21:29):
trackers.
That's an app that you can get.
There's another one calledStreaks and you can have
accountability groups.
But there's some things thatyou've got to do.
You want to create some systemsto help you reinforce your
consistency in some of thesehigh impact habits, you know.
(21:50):
Just to give you some examplesagain, we talked about the
parable of the talents inMatthew, chapter 25.
You know the unfaithful servanthe just buried the talent that
he received.
He didn't yield anything.
And so that's kind of whathappens when you're inconsistent
.
You know Nehemiah.
You know, despite hisopposition, he consistently
(22:14):
worked at rebuilding Jerusalem'swalls.
He consistently worked atrebuilding Jerusalem's walls and
you can look at that throughNehemiah, chapters four through
six.
You know his daily leadershipreally compounded into the
completion of that work in just52 days and he restored a nation
because of it.
You know, if you want to lookat some modern examples, you can
(22:35):
look at Blake Mykowski.
He's the one that started Tom'sShoes and he was very
consistent with his model, whichis one for one.
His model was one for one.
For every pair of shoes he sold, he donated a pair for a child
or human around the world and itreally compounded.
(22:57):
It had a great social impactand he sold millions of shoes
while building thispurpose-driven business and gave
away millions of pairs of shoes.
So his faith really inspiredgenerosity and it caused other
businesses to look at that andsay what can we do that we can
(23:17):
have the impact like he has had.
You know, truett, cathy, withChick-fil-A.
You know Cathy's consistentcommitment to biblical
principles, for example, likeclosing on Sundays and
prioritizing people over profits.
He built a multi-billion dollarempire while he was honoring
God.
He built a multibillion-dollarempire while he was honoring God
(23:38):
and the tagline under theircompany's vision is we are
closed on Sunday to honor Godand let our employees worship.
And that really exemplifiedtheir faith-driven consistency.
And what about Dave Ramsey?
A lot of people know DaveRamsey and through his Financial
Peace University, ramseyconsistently teaches debt free
(23:59):
living based on Proverbs, andhe's got a huge business empire
and he started and then filedbankruptcy.
You know he wasn't doing goodin the beginning but he was just
consistent, consistent,consistent.
And now he's.
He's influenced millions ofpeople and it's because he's
(24:20):
showing a consistent message anda consistent method.
Now these stories show thatconsistency and if you're a good
steward, you're faithful, itcompounds, it compounds your
success and it helps advance thekingdom of God.
Now there's going to be somechallenges.
You're going to have challengesto this compounding consistency
(24:45):
that we're talking about andyou know you're going to have to
create some inertia.
You know to deal with that.
You know, the Bible says 1Peter, 5 and 8, it says Be alert
and of sober mind.
Your enemy, the devil, prowlslsaround like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour, but see, god gives us the
victory, the Bible says.
(25:05):
And so you've got to be aware ofsome of these challenges that
may try to stop you from beingconsistent, and one of those is
distractions.
Distractions and I would putthese together, actually
distractions and overcommitment.
You know, if you'reovercommitted to things, you
can't continue to do the thingsthat are going to have the
greatest impact.
(25:26):
If you're distracted, you kindof walk away and you don't.
So you've got to begin toprioritize, and that starts even
with prayer, because, you know, let God give you some
prioritization.
And to help you with that, because you need to learn how to
say no to those things arereally what I consider to be
non-essential things.
So you need to say no to thosethings because it just it
(25:49):
hinders you from beingconsistent.
And then, of course, there'sadversity and discouragement.
You know, sometimes you getdiscouraged.
Maybe you're not seeing aprofit or a harvest come as fast
as you think you should.
Hey, I've been doing this forthree weeks and nothing's
changed.
Well, guess what Keep doinganother three weeks and then do
it another three weeks and thendo it another three weeks.
(26:10):
You don't quit.
You know I've never known atrue bodybuilder.
I'm talking about a person whocompetes in bodybuilding that
went into the gym and worked forabout five minutes and said I
don't understand why this isn'tworking.
You know it's got to beconsistent.
It's got to be consistent.
And again, there's sometimesyou get discouraged and you want
(26:34):
to give up.
There's adversity, you want togive up, but let me tell you,
you keep doing it every day.
And then sometimes the biggestproblem we have is bad habits.
You know we can have theseingrained habits in us, these
bad habits that are going tohinder us from doing the good
habits consistently.
You've got to replace the badones with the good one and you
(26:57):
may have to have the power ofthe Holy Spirit to help you with
that, but you can do it.
Another is what I would callmeasurement fatigue.
Okay, measurement fatigue.
You know we are constantly, like I said, like the farmer
that was constantly digging itup.
When you constantly are tryingto measure how you're doing on
(27:19):
that particular habit thatyou've been consistent with for
the last week, you kind of gettired of it after a while
because nothing's changing, andso you can measure it and
measure it to death.
What I would say?
So you want to celebrate smallwins and you want to remember
God's faithfulness, and thenwhat goes hand in hand with that
(27:42):
is just slow progress, justslow progress.
You know it's kind of likeearly on when you do your
investments.
You know it doesn't look likeyou're doing that good with your
investment, but it takes time.
It takes time.
Don't get discouraged.
Don't get discouraged and evenif you stop for a short period
(28:06):
of time, get back on it, beconsistent, Stay with it.
Don't give up, don't let go.
You know I work a lot withpurchasing people and you have
to get a hold of these people.
They're very hard to get a holdof, but I've got a system and
it's a system that I useconsistently, day in, day out,
(28:28):
day in, day out, and I don'tgive up after the first phone
call and they don't call me back.
I don't give up after the firstemail and they don't email me
back.
I don't give up the first phonecall and they don't call me
back.
I don't give up after the firstemail and they don't email me
back.
I don't give up, I'm consistentwith it.
And I want to tell yousomething Consistency pays off.
So you've got to look at that.
Don't look at small progress orslow progress and then quit.
(28:53):
The Bible says in Proverbs 21.5,.
It says the plans of thediligent lead surely to
abundance.
The plan of the diligent, theone who is consistent.
And then, of course, there'sexternal pressures.
Pressures, maybe a shift in themarket, or maybe you get some
criticism.
You know, that's why it's soimportant that you be anchored
(29:14):
in prayer.
Be anchored in prayer and findpeople you can be accountable
with.
And then, lastly, one thathinders is going to be burnout.
You know it's just burnout.
You're just trying too much atonce.
Don't try everything at once.
You just pick a few things andbe consistent, consistent, get
(29:36):
it under your belt, get it whereit just happens automatically.
You know, prioritize two orthree key habits, uh, and then
you allow God to to multiply, amen.
You know the, the compoundinginterest of consistency, that's
God's design for multiplicationin our lives and in our
businesses.
You know, by faithfullyinvesting small daily actions,
(30:00):
we're going to partner.
We don't just partner withpeople, we're partnering with
God, and it'll produce anabundant fruit and an abundant
life.
You know, 1 Corinthians 15, 58reminds us.
It says be steadfast, consistent, immovable, always
abounding in the work of theLord, knowing that in the Lord,
your labor or your habits arenot in vain.
(30:23):
So make sure that you'resteadfast.
You know, embrace thisprinciple of consistency and do
it today and I believe thatyou'll witness I know you will.
If you're consistent, you'llwitness exponential growth and
you'll do that for his glory.
Lord, we thank you right now forministering to those who've
(30:43):
listened to today's podcast.
Lord, I ask you to multiply.
Multiply, lord, our consistentefforts as you multiply the
loaves and the fishes, lord, that we read about in your word.
Lord, help us to be consistentin the important things in our
careers and our life.
And, lord, we thank you thatyour word declares that you
(31:05):
bless the work of our hands.
So, lord, I'm asking that youbless the consistent things that
we do.
In the name of Jesus, bring theharvest.
Amen and amen.
