Speaker 1 (00:02):
I am here with a fantastic guest today. He is
a good friend of mine and I'm gonna let him
introduce himself instead of me introducing him for one so
ha jokes on.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
You, all right, what's up? My name is Cody Tal.
I am a new Christian music artist, pop artist, Christian
contemporary and I'm just getting started. But I love teaching
God's worth their music and that's really my heart behind
what I do is to lead people to Jesus in
real daily life. And I just love reaching people like
you and just putting out music that's fun, that's heartfelt.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Because Cody and I met about a year and a
half ago in person, and we've hung out of a
whole time. But let's go now we're finally actually doing
this thing. So and you might recognize Cody. He was
on one of my episodes. I think it was a
Christian Music Bros. Playlist episode if I'm not mistaken. There's
been so many episodes of Yeah. I mean, I do
a lot of group episodes. I think it's a cool
and then experience. It gets more people in, get to
(00:56):
hear more people's hearts and thoughts.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
But it's great to.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Have a says, sit down with you, coffee hour, relax
and everything. So, Cody, you're from the state of Ohio, Gross,
I'm from Michigan, but I still love you for who
you are. Don't worry even though I'm from Michigan and
you know how Michigan Ohio but heads all the time.
But could you tell us a little bit what made
you move out to Nashville, Like your music calling, like
what called you to do music?
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yes, we do, we do. Yeah, Well, definitely Nashville is
the place for Christian music that kind of like everyone
gathers here and so that's definitely what brought me specifically here,
but into Christian music when I was about let's say,
maybe eleven or ten or between ten and twelve years old,
I first discovered Christian music as like almost in its entirety.
(01:41):
That was probably around two thousand and nine, and that
was when The Motions by Matthew West was kind of
a hit. There Will Be a Day by Jeremy Camp
and one of the first bands my family listened to
ever was Casting Crowns, and just the intentionality in their
lyrics really hit hard. Where I love the song The
Motions of my Matthew West it become kind of became
(02:03):
an anthem in my early walk with Jesus, and that
then just really inspired me. I loved singing. My mom
was a singer growing up. She was just she would
just sing in musicals at church, and I wanted to
sound and sing like her. And another inspiration was the
first America's Got Talent winner, Beyonca Ryan was a young
(02:23):
person singing and I thought, I want to sound like that.
I want to do that, and so I just kept
working at it and got inspired them by the lyricism
of a lot of music that I that I held
on too.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
I was talking to Matt yesterday at the time of recording.
I was talking Matt yesterday and we're like, He's like,
who brought you into Christians? I like, what was yourirst
Christians experience? I was like, twenty eleven. I went to
Winter Jam, so roughly around the same time.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
A Zoom.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
We're probably getting immersed into it as well. Right Winter
Jam's going strong, and I recommend anyone that who's watching
to check out Winter Jam. I'm not sponsored by Winter
Jam obviously, by just like promoting them so much that
I go every year. I'm go going to your sentence
twenty eleven. Actually, so this will be your fifteen I
go to see that. Since then you release your EP
Our New Beginning, you have the big hit finale. It's
(03:08):
still stuck in my head at this moment. I would
play it out loud to see what everyone knows. But
but you know, Audien does always stream well on platforms
like this. But can you tell us a little bit
about your EP?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah? Absolutely. Our New Beginning kind of was born out
of exploring Finale as a song and my desire to
want to teach God's worth their music and be intentional
to have biblical lyrics that are very relatable to daily
life and not just not just honest for honesty's sake,
(03:40):
but honest to lead back to the truth of God's word,
to the truth that God gives us knowing who He is,
and then sharpening our ability to discern His spirit. And
so Our New Beginning is kind of a journey through
the Gospel, through Jesus' teachings, his promises, and then sending
out into the life of falling Jesus. Where the first
(04:01):
song Finale is kind of like a It feels odd
for it being the first song, right, It feels like
it should be the last. And it was my first
song ever that I released as an official song, and
so I thought that was cool, kind of like starting
with the end in mind, looking ahead to eternity and
realizing that a lot of time our new beginnings start
(04:24):
with ending something, and especially ending our own life, living
ourselves by ourselves, and start our new life living with
Jesus and walking with him, being made new and made
alive with Christ. And I thought, that's such a good
new beginning. That's the best end to beginning we can experience.
And so that's what finale kind of goes through with
(04:46):
them looking ahead to Jesus's ultimate return, which is the
ultimate finale, and then it goes through the teachings of
Jesus with the parable of the good Samaritan being found
on the road, the beaten man found on the road
by the good Samaritan, which is the perfect example of
loving our neighbors, and so first from knowing and loving Jesus,
(05:07):
loving God and loving our neighbors, kind of that call
to the greatest commandment, and then it goes through the
life of the disciples and the story Peter and my
song Vibrations kind of a fun poppy way of going
through kind of the reality of him denying Jesus but
then turning to listen to God's voice instead of his own,
and then the promise of the Holy Spirit and you
chose to stay, which is originally inspired by mine.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
How Cody and I kind of became friends. And Braden
who used to be on the channel. We talk about
Braden all the time, even though he's still not on
the show, but we still talk about it.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, yeah, And I got Bradon hooked out of your music.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
He's like, I don't know who this is, Like when
we went to meet you, like at the factory that
one day, He's like, I have no idea who this
Cody guy is, but I'm down for that. He got
addicted to your saga. And that's how things happened, Chess,
I got things I happen like that, right, And if
anyone who's listening or watching this, streaming this, whatever you're doing,
make sure to check out what is on finale. It
still makes big waves. Like you make some really creative
(06:01):
music videos. You have one you found found me on
the road. If I can't remember to write, I'm sorry,
And then Finale can tell us a little bit about
your creative process with these music videos.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, the first three songs I put out Found on
the Road Finale, and then you chose to Stay. I
kind of had dreamed of kind of a storytelling behind
the music videos, and I worked with a friend from church.
His name is Nate Francisco, and he has his own
kind of agency called Ambient Light Studio. So I worked
(06:32):
with him on creating the first three and it goes
through the first one being that journey of writing the
song and kind of like learning amidst the vastness of
God's glory, and it was really cool. We were kind
of going through planning the music video and he had
this idea. He said, what if we what if we
went to a lake and we set up a writing
(06:54):
desk on the lake, And I'm like, okay. He said,
I'll put a table underneath the water and we'll do
it at sunbrise so that the sun's not hitting down
in the water so you can't see the table, and
then you'll sit on the desk. And we went to
the location and early morning on a Saturday, he set
it up and he was like, you know, kind of
(07:15):
like testing it and like standing on it. Jumping up
and down. He's like, it's I think it's good. It's
set and I you know, he and I are not
the same weight. Let's just say that. And I went
to him, I'm like, can you add like one hundred
pounds to what you're doing, because I'm like, I'm gonna
fall off this thing. But it worked. He did a
great job setting that up, and yeah, it was such
(07:38):
a cool thing. That became the single cover. It became
then the EP cover. We took some photos there and
it just goes through the journey of like learning amidst
the vastness of God's glory but also the simplicity of
his gospel and experiencing new steps and starting to run
the race and doing it with your community around you.
(07:58):
And so it kind of has that celebration vibe of
the people around us. And then then there kind of
becomes this eeriness at the very end, walking on a
road by ourselves. And then it goes into the found
on the road, which is the parable of the good Smaritan,
but it's from the perspective of the beaten man, which
I think is such an interesting way of looking at it,
and it's very relatable in the sense of we've all
(08:19):
been kind of pushed and pulled around by this world,
and even in the church there's been you know, church
hurt is a big topic today, and I think that
that's explored actually in the scripture where people were hurt
by the religious leaders and Jesus confronted that, and he
didn't confront it as if they needed to just follow
their own ideas and live their own truth. It says,
(08:40):
Jesus says, you're not following God's truth anyway if you're
hurting people this way, if you're setting your own rules,
setting your own standards. And so whether it's the world
setting their own standards or whether it's the Pharisees or
the religious leaders setting their own standards, it's all about
going back to Jesus's standard that he finds us on
the road, and that we're called in to love people
like he has loved us and to live according to
(09:02):
his truth in his word, and then you chose to
stay kind of goes through the intimate moments growing up
with my Mom.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Instagram page is full of video clips too, but he
also has a lot of cool reels lately. One inspire
you to make some of these reels, Like lately, I've
been seeing more and more reels on your channel. Like
when you first started out, all of it was like
just finale related, but then all of a sudden you're
just diving into more preachy type reels. How what maybe
you decide to switch your channel from like music to
(09:31):
more like biblical truth things too.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
I'm just curious. Yeah, absolutely, I know with wanting to
teach God's word through music, I thought, I love I
love going to concerts where they talk in between songs
and give like like teachings, and you know, and they
they're really like rich teachings, you know, rich and like
well summarized, you know, to the point and gets you know,
(09:53):
gets back to the music of course, but being able
to like hear the heart behind the songs, I love that,
And I know a lot of people love hearing this
stories behind songs. I love hearing like just being guided
in their walk with Jesus. And I thought, I can
do that. I can speak into that and related back
to my songs. But really speaking to some questions people
(10:14):
are asking, you know, I think a lot of people
listen to music because they like music, but also because
it speaks to their daily life, and I know when
people who are thirsting for Jesus in their daily life,
that's the audience. I'm wanting to speak to people who
want Jesus in their daily life, and not just on Sundays,
not just even and I'm not even talking about just Christians.
(10:37):
I'm talking about people who want Jesus, like are thirsting
for our creator and the people who want to know
him and so leading people to Jesus. Wait.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Wait, as of the series, you just performed at the
wee level Wars and want the next big thing? How
is that experience for you as an artist?
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Yeah? Crazy? I mean I had a band member of
Striper give me my award, which I never I didn't
even know that would happen, and it was like, that's
like this classic Christian musician offering me this award. It
was so cool just to be nominated, let alone to win,
and to meet my fellow nominees, some of her already
friends with them. Some of them like the guys from Hopeful.
(11:13):
I love them, Oh my gosh, I love them. They're
so fun and they were so kind yes, and like
just so like genuine and ministry minded, and especially like
the testimony, especially with like Carly and that whole group,
you know, taking her into their home, you know, as
(11:34):
a as a as an older brother, and and oh,
just such redemption in that house, in that home, and
that that the group. I love their story and they
have such good ministry, and so it was so cool
to like meet them and to know that we're ministering
alongside them, and that's just such an encouragement and so
out of that whole night, that was one of the
(11:55):
highlights honestly was to meet the guys from Hopeful and
meet Carly and and Matthew of course, and being able
to just like be amidst a lot of the people
that I do ministry with that I'm joining in. It's
so so cool. So yeah, and it was cool to
be able to perform my song.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
It was spreme break in Michigan time, and I was
in Florida on the beach. But I was like, and
then I was like, it's gonna be last Bread. I
need to I can watch I new Tube that it
was and I was all heartbroken and I'm like, Yolo
your work on of new music, you said, is there
anything you could share with us about the new music
that's coming out or anything you want to share about it.
If you can't, it's cool. And I know, like some
you have here mosaic group and we can't. I don't
want to burst their bubble shout out to Wisdom and
(12:38):
Wisdom is a great guy. But I don't want to
like say something you're not supposed to say.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
No, you're so good. No, that's a great question. Yes,
Wisdom is a great guy, awesome, awesome man. For those
who don't know, Wisdom Moon just incredible man of God
and leader in the Christian music industry space. But yeah,
I have a couple of new songs. I'm working on it, and
actually a really cool thing behind both of those, especially
(13:04):
the one i'll probably release the soonest is both of
them were written with the youth group at my church.
And so there's some youth students that wanted to start songwriting,
and I thought, well, I work with these high school
and middle school students anyway as a volunteer with small groups.
Why not start a songwriting ministry. And so we started
(13:26):
meeting like once a month or once every two weeks
at my house with another student leader or with my
fiance who's you know, essentially a student leader without being
an official one with the youth group, but making sure
of course that we have good student safety boundaries there.
But we meet at my house and we just like
(13:47):
I talked to them and I said, you know, we
don't have to write a certain kind of song, but
I do say that like the standards for what we
write is that of course, as a group we work
together and we have open hands with our ideas, but
that we honor God and honor others. It doesn't have
to be a Christian song, doesn't even have to be
like a worship song. It doesn't have to be a
(14:07):
love song or anything like. It doesn't have to be
one way or the other, but honor God and honor others.
And so the first session we wrote a song called
Drowning an Uncertainty, and I was expecting, like maybe we
would try to write like a you know, a happy
worship song. Maybe was the first first thing I would expect. Yeah,
(14:27):
And I'm working on a promotion plan for the song
now and so working on the promo for this song
and super excited to get out there. But it goes
through kind of the I believe it's first Peter passage
of casting your anxieties on him because he cares for you,
and it walks through then asking God, like can I
(14:48):
cast my anxiety? Is it true that you care for me?
And then can I trust you to redeem when I'm
drowning an uncertainty? And it kind of plays on seeing
how Jesus pulled Peter up from under even when his
fake faith was weak, and pulled him up from the
water and said even like you know, gently but firmly
(15:09):
rebuked him, said you know you have little faith, asking
God to help with that faith and realizing I can
trust you, I can have faith in you. So that's
one and then there's another one that goes through Matthew
eleven twenty eight, where it says, come to me, all
of you who are weary, and take my yoke upon you.
It's easy, and so it's called yoke.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
For those who are watching, check out Cody's music. It's unique,
it's different. It's fresh and a girl desk or in
a landscape that is so crowded with an Oh, I'm
a Jeremy Matthew Camp West Jeremy Camp and.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
All the pop Eye codies.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
Pop Yve is different from Daughters and it's excited to
see a fresh face in the industry, Cody, I just
have a few extra minutes with you today. Is there
anything you want to talk about that we haven't brought up.
I like to give the artists the floor to speak
about any topic they want to bring up.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
If we didn't touch anything. One one song I didn't
bring up, but it's kind of starting to be in production.
It's not going to be a soon at release, but
I'll tell you a little bit about it. It's actually
going to be my fiance and my first dance at
our wedding, and it's a song I wrote for her
(16:17):
when I proposed to her, and then she she had
asked if it could be our first dance, and I
wanted to leave that up to her, so I wasn't
like wanting my own song. But it's really special something
that we say to one another because when we started
dating and eventually realized that we were, you know, really
considering walking into marriage and loving one another, we said,
(16:40):
you know, I like, will be together forever. And I
thought about how Jesus talks about marriage. Obviously it's a
very good thing. It's a reflection of Christ in the Church,
of his sacrificial love for us, his selflessness, and then
are you know his redemption to us? And so marriage
is meant to be a reflection of that, and we
want it to be. We were aiming for that to
(17:02):
be where I'm selfless and we loving each other selflessly.
There but anyway is she said, we'll we be together forever.
And Jesus says that in heaven there won't be marriage,
that that's will be with him right, will be the
bride of Christ. And I said, well, forever until forever,
