Praise the Lord everyone.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
I hope you've had a great Thanksgiving today. On Sunday Supper,
I'm going to share a special treat with you. I'm
going to share a message with you from a special
friend and brother, doctor David Gibbs. He's going to share
with us today a message titled how to do the Impossible.

(01:30):
I pray this message is going to be as great
a blessing to you as it was to me, and
without any further hindrance of delay.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Here's doctor Gibbs so if you would please to the
Book of Matthew. The Book of Matthew, Chapter fourteen, Matthew fourteen.
How many of you here have ever misread simple directions?
Hold your hand up? Yeah? How many have you ever
missread a roadmap? Hold your hand up? How many of

(02:03):
you all ever misread a recipe? How of you guys
had to eat what they misread? Oh? Yeah, we want
to be careful that we don't misread critical things. Early on,
I was taught a lesson and if I could go
up and down the roads here, many of you have

(02:23):
had the same episode. When our family was young, we
decided to take a vacation and motor homes had just
come out, just come out, and I told my wife
that looks like a neat way to take a trip.
We had three kids at that point, they were little,
and I said, let's see if we can go rent one.
They're renting them uptown and we'll take a trip. And

(02:46):
my wife said to me, well, do you think you
can handle something like that? Now? How many of you
men understand the insult in that question comes to this stuff.
We're competent, That's all there is to it. Well, I
went up there rended the motorhome and I asked the guy,
you know, how do you know how to run it?
He said, look, I'm going to give you a book,

(03:08):
and he said it is an excellent book. Anything you
need to know about this motorhome is in the book.
He said, it's got a great index. And he said,
if you'll follow the book, you'll be just fine. Well,
we left out of Cleveland, Ohio, had a great time,
traveled down to Nashville, Tennessee, and we camped right by
the Percy Priest Lake. Our second day there, we're outside

(03:31):
eating breakfast at the picnic table, and my wife came
out and she said, what does that little red light
that's glowing and the hall mean? I said, I wasn't
aware there was a light in the hall. She said,
go look it's lit. What does it mean? Boy? I
went inside? Sure enough, little tiny motorhome. There was a
red light on the wall about the size of a

(03:52):
dime and it was glowing bright. Got the book lights
hall there it was. It's when this light comes on,
your holding tanks are full. How many of you know
what holding tanks are? Anybody who's ever messed with a
motor home has had to deal with holding tanks. All

(04:14):
the stuff that's going down the sink and down the restroom. Man,
it's going into a tank. And when you have three
small kids, a lots going down the restroom and there
it is in that tank. Now, it gave specific directions
how to handle it. It said, go find where the
sewer dump station is. So I found that. Then it

(04:35):
said put the left rear five pounds of pressure in something.
It has one of these old style air pumps. It's
going ding ding ding ding forever. Finally my wife comes
around and she said, what's taken so long? I said, well,

(04:57):
to do it right takes some time. She said, well,
I got a question. I said, what's that? She said,
look in that wheel well and I looked. She said,
why is that tank bulging like that? I said, it's
made to do it. That's what it's supposed to do.

(05:24):
I never did quite get one hundred and five pounds out.
But while I'm working on it, a guy in a
brand spanking new, fresh from the factory greyhound bus motor

(05:45):
home pulls in and I walked over to look at it.
I mean, mine is just a little thing. This is humongous.
I said, wow. He said, you know why I'm here.
I said why? He said, I want to get the
dust out of my tanks. I said, boy, you're fastidious.

(06:07):
He said, I just picked it up from the factory
and there's not a bug on it. He said, you
want to know what I paid for it? I said,
what'd you pay for it? Now? This is a long
time ago. Never for it. He said, I paid two
hundred and thirty two thousand dollars. I said, whoa sweet Alabama,

(06:27):
look at that. Now. My wife said, come on, we
got more than dust in our tanks. Let's get let's
get back to work here. So I'm over here trying
to get that one hundred and five pounds in. She's
over there. Finally I tell her, I think we got
as much in as we're going to get poll of valve.

(06:55):
What happened next will never leave my memory, never. When
that air and all the nonsense in that tank came
whooping out, it went down that hose and lifted that
hose right up out of the ground, and the hose

(07:19):
is going all over that brand new motor home. We
hit one of his screens and it went pump right
inside me. Then that crazy hose lifted up and it

(07:42):
had to be one hundred feet. There were little tiny
kids in a kiddie pool, and we're just Oh. I
came running around the corn. My dear wife is hugging
that hose and she's saying, Jesus helped me. Help me.

(08:12):
I did everything pretty much right, but I missed something
critical and it was one little dot. Do you know
what I've discovered? All across America and around the world.

(08:36):
There's people who know something about the Gospel pretty much,
but what they're trusting in isn't the Gospel. And there's
Christians wanting to live the Christian life who say, I

(08:57):
want God's power, but Brother Gibbs, I don't seem to
have it in the measure that I want it. Tonight,
I ask you a very simple question, an intensely personal question.

(09:18):
Why would you want to waste your life doing something
great for God? You say, what, Why would you want
to waste your life doing something great for God? When

(09:39):
God invites you to do impossible things? Unsafe people can
do great things. Look at the captains of industry, look
at other false cults and religions. They routinely do great

(09:59):
things things, but they can't do impossible things. And God
doesn't invite you to do great things. He invites you
to do impossible things. If you could do something impossible

(10:20):
for God, what would it be? Oh well, brother Gibbs,
maybe I'd like to do what? Oh well, maybe I'd
like to have a gajillion dollars. I don't know what
a gagillion is, but it's a big number. And you

(10:42):
know what I can promise you up front? God says,
if you're just going to ask a miss so that
you can consume it on your own, luss. He's not
going to do that. But what would you want him
to do in something bold impossible for him? How about

(11:02):
a relationship? Have you got a relationship that is so
shocked to pieces you can't even remember how it got
to where it is. God wants to do the impossible,
and he's looking for men. He's looking for women who

(11:24):
are willing to do the impossible. We're about to read
a story in scripture that I draw your attention to
with care because it lays out exactly God's requirements for
the impossible. Well, this is good for brother Gothard, because boy,

(11:47):
God could sure use him. Now, God will use anybody
who meets God's conditions, And boy, I hold brother Gothard
in high esteem and regard how God has used that man.
But God's going to use him and measure beyond anything
we've ever imagined, because God wants to do the impossible

(12:08):
through him, through you. I'll go back to our scriptures
and get ready to mark them if you would, you
know these stories. Jesus has just fed the multitudes, and
he says to his disciples, I want you to feed

(12:30):
these people. And they said, we don't have hardly anything here.
And they said, there's just a boy here with a
few loaves and fishes, and we have five thousand people here.
And in that day they only counted the men, and
so there was normally three to four times that number.

(12:50):
So here's a crowd of maybe fifteen to twenty thousand people.
We have two little loaves and fish. And Jesus said,
let's feed the people. Now. We just sum suously fared

(13:11):
over here for dinner tonight. And man, when you walked
in here, they had a lot of food. But have
you ever gone somewhere where you said, boy, there's not
enough food here. Well, this would have been catastrophically not enough.
A couple of little fish and when they say a loaf,

(13:32):
they don't mean a loaf like we imagine from the
bakery today. A loaf would have been a thing about
the size of a twinkie. How many of you know
what a twinkie is? How many of you liked twinkies? Yeah,
and we're going to feed thousands and thousands of people.

(13:52):
And Jesus had said, blessed it and break it, and
they started handing it out, and by the miracle power
of God, at the end they had way more than
they started with. Jesus is trying to teach his disciples
that God has the impossibility ability, and they saw it.

(14:21):
I believe if I went up and down these rows,
you'd say, Yeah, the Bible says he can do the impossible,
But would he do it with me? Now? Having fed
the thousands while the people ate and the disciples watched,
now Jesus is about to put them to a different test.

(14:44):
And read the story with me, please, as it starts
at verse twenty two Matthew Chapter fourteen, and straightway, Jesus
constrained his disciples to get into a ship and oh
before him under the other side while he sent the
multitudes away. Now remember several of the disciples were professional mariners.

(15:09):
They were fishermen. They knew how to handle a boat.
They fished this lake. So what Jesus said, I want
you to get in here, go to the other side,
and I'll be over there shortly. And when he had
sent the multitudes away, he Jesus went up into a
mountain apart to pray, And when the evening was come,

(15:30):
he was there alone. Now, I'm not preaching on this tonight,
but if the Son of God needed to get away
to pray, what do we need to do? Now? The
story starts where the miracle takes place verse twenty four.
But the ship was now in the midst of the sea,

(15:52):
tossed with waves, for the wind was contrary. The wind's
being contrary means simply the wind was coming from all sides.
Every mariner knows in a storm, you put the bow,
the front of the boat into the wind. That's the
only way to weather bad seas. But what do you

(16:15):
do when it's coming every which way? These disciples are
in a storm that is so bad, it is so hlatious,
that they've lost their composure. Look at what happens next.
They're in this horrific storm. And in the fourth watch

(16:40):
of the night, now that's three a m Jesus went
onto them walking on the sea. Now, somehow, because a
flannel graph, it always showed Jesus walking on a flat sea.
And by the way, it'd be an incredible miracle to

(17:01):
walk on a flat sea. But he didn't walk on
a flat sea. He's walking on a sea in the dead,
a knight that is raging out of control. And in
the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went under them,
walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him

(17:22):
walking under the sea, they were troubled, saying it's a spirit,
and they cried out for fear. They screamed like teenage girls.
They lost it. They are so terrified by the storm.
And now here comes the Son of God walking on

(17:43):
the water, and they lost it. The Bible says that
they screamed, they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus
spake unto them, saying underline these next words, be of
good cheer. Now, be of good cheer means get happy.

(18:04):
We're commanded by God numerous times in the New Testament
to be of good cheer. And these disciples who are
in a storm that has got them paralyzed. They've been
caught in this storm for almost now, probably in excess
of nine to ten hours. And they see Jesus and

(18:25):
they scream, and the Son of God says to him,
would you all please get happy, be of good cheer?
It is I be not afraid. Now the miracle is
going to start to unfold beyond Jesus. And Peter answered
him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me

(18:50):
come unto thee on the water. Now here's the first key.
If you want God to do a miracle, if you
want God to you you to do the impossible, write
this down. You have to ask. You have to ask.
The Bible says, ask, and you shall receive. The Bible

(19:14):
says you have not because you asked not. How specific
have you been with God in asking, well, I've asked
God to bless me? No, no, no, How specific have

(19:36):
you been in asking God for something that is humanly,
utterly impossible? If you want God to use you to
do the impossible, it starts with you asking him. I

(19:58):
was with a wonderful pastor friend of mine, a dear
black man. We're traveling through the night. We kind of
ran out of things to talk about. And I'm guessing
it's probably two to three in the morning maybe, And
he said, can I share something with you? David? I
said sure. He said seven years ago, I asked God

(20:20):
to do something impossible for me. I said, well, you
ask for He said, I'm not good at witnessing. He said,
I get nervous, I stutter, he said, I perspire. He said,
I'm just not good at it. But he said I

(20:43):
asked God seven years ago to let me whin one
person a day for him to christ And he said.
I got even more specific. He said, God, I don't
want to count anybody who comes forward in a church

(21:04):
service where I'm preaching. He said, I want one a
day out there. And he said, David, in seven years,
God's not missed a day, not a day. I said, no,

(21:30):
you're telling me straight right, He said, David, God has
not missed a day. I said, I got a question.
If you get to one day, can that count for
the next day? And he said, oh, David, you're a lawyer.

(21:52):
You're thinking crazy. He said no, I asked God for
one every day and he said there's days, there are more.
But he said God has not missed a day. And
he said, we got to get fuel here in a minute.
And he said, we're going to pull off in a
big gas mart. I think probably middle of the night.
And he said, I'm already on my soul patrol for

(22:13):
this day. I said, what's your soul patrol? He said,
I asked God. I know it's impossible, but for his honor,
for his glory, I want to reach it. And he said,
maybe it'll be somebody in the gas mart. I said, wow, Now,

(22:34):
this is a man of integrity. I've known him a
long time. I've admired him a long time. I have
just never heard of anybody asking God for that. We
pulled off, we're getting our gas, and we're about to
go in the gas mart. I love to go in
gas marks at the middle of the night. There's nothing
healthy in there. It's all good and you go in

(22:56):
and get the food. So we walk in the gas
smart and I'm telling you, there's him, there's me and
a lady behind the counter. This thing is lit brilliantly bright.
There's nobody else there. We grabbed some soda pops, we
get some snacks. We walk up to the counter put
him down. What he did next startled me. Young girl,

(23:22):
probably in her early thirties, behind the counter, looking at us,
and the way he said it was all wrong. The
preacher looked at her and said, are you ready to die?

(23:42):
And he said, I mean if you died, do you
know where you'd go? Heaven or hell? Which is it?
And I looked at him and I thought, you're like
a mack truck. What about you know? My name's Bob.

(24:04):
What's your name? I mean? He scared me. Her eyes
got like silver dollars, and she's looking at us, not
saying a word, and real slow. She takes her hand
back and she starts reaching under the counter, and I thought,

(24:27):
oh no, she's got a gun back there. I'm gonna
die in a gas mark because you didn't know how
to ask somebody about whether they're saved or not. She
reaches down under there and she starts coming up, and
she comes up with a Bible, and she looks at

(24:51):
us and she breaks into a smile and she says, oh,
thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
What a blessing. She said, I'm saved. I'm on my
way to heaven. I've asked Jesus to save me. This
is my Bible. But I've always told the Lord, I'd
love somebody to come in here and just witness to

(25:13):
me and thank you, thank you, thank you. That was wonderful.
And I thought, oh, she's saved. We're not going to
see anything here. She said, I'm saved. I'm on my
way to heaven. How this other lady got in there,

(25:37):
I can't tell you. But a lady is suddenly standing
behind us. And she said, well, she may know where
she's going, but I don't. I about to come out
of my shoes. Where'd you come from? Whoa that lady

(26:03):
said to him. God didn't send you here for her.
God sent you here for me. She said. One week ago,
I buried my mother. On my mother's death bed, she
pled with me to trust Christ and I said no,
and she died in my arms with her begging me.

(26:27):
I haven't been able to sleep for a week. She said,
I am so afraid I'm going to die and go
to Hell. And so I said, well, I'll walk down
to the gas martin get some stuff for the kid's
breakfast in the morning. I walked in here, you're just
talking to the wrong lady. You're supposed to talk to
me my dear black preacher said, God, bless you, you're saved.

(26:53):
I need to talk to her. He turns around and
never asked the lady to get on her knee, but
she just gets on her knees on a linoleum floor.
He gets on his knees and he starts taking her
through the gospel. Now, while he's doing that, two truck

(27:14):
drivers walk in and they come walking over by us,
and they're looking at this. Here's a black man on
the floor with an open bible, another lady on the floor,
a girl behind the counter, and me standing there watching.
And they came walking up and they said, is this

(27:34):
a stick up? And I said no. And before I
could say anything, the girl behind the counter starts some
of you know, some women will talk when the phone
doesn't even ring. I mean, they just jump in. She
jumps in and tells the whole story in detail. They

(27:58):
came in here, they bought soda pop, they bought snacks.
They walked up here. They asked me, if I was saved,
would I go to heaven. I reached down here and
got my bible. They said, I told him I'm saved,
But man, I just have been praying. God had let
somebody come in here who cared enough to try to
witness to me. But it wasn't me, it was for
It was her. She let her mama die in her.

(28:21):
She told everything, and she's getting saved right now. And
the one truck driver turned to the other and he said,
I need to join them. He said, we've been talking
all night. I'm not sure I'm going to heaven. And
without asking, he gets on his knees and he said,

(28:46):
could you help me too? Oh, you say, brother Gibbs,
that had never happened for me. You've not asked that
man asked. You have not because you asked God.
