in progress.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Praise the Lord everyone.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Today on Sunday Supper, I'm going to share a special
treat with you. I'm going to share a message with
you from a special friend and brother, doctor David Gibbs.
He's going to share with us today a message titled
how to do the Impossible. I pray this message is

(01:51):
going to be as great a blessing to you as
it was to me, and without any further hindrance of delay,
here's doctor Gibbs.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
I was with a wonderful pastor friend of mine, a
dear black man. We're traveling through the night. We kind
of ran out of things to talk about, and I'm
guessing it's probably two to three in the morning maybe,
and he said, can I share something with you? David?
I said sure. He said, seven years ago, I asked

(02:23):
God to do something impossible for me. I said, well,
you ask for it. He said, I'm not good at witnessing.
He said, I get nervous, I stutter, he said, I perspire.
He said, I'm just not good at it. But he said,
I asked God seven years ago to let me win

(02:47):
one person a day for him to Christ. And he said,
I got even more specific. I said, God, I don't
want to count anybody who comes forward in a church
service where I'm preaching. He said, I want one a
day out there. And he said, David, in seven years,

(03:12):
God's not missed a day, not a day. I said, no,
you're telling me straight, right, He said, David, God has
not missed a day. I said, I got a question.
If you get to one day, can that count for
the next day? And he said, oh, David, you're a lawyer.

(03:36):
You're thinking crazy, he said, no. I asked God for
one every day, and he said, there's days there I'm worth.
But he said, God has not missed a day. And
he said, we got to get fuel here in a minute,
and he said, we're going to pull off in a
big gas mart. I think probably middle of the night.
And he said, I'm already on my soul patrol for

(03:57):
this day. I said, and what's your soul patrol? He said,
I asked God. I know it's impossible, but for his honor,
for his glory, I want to reach with And he said,
maybe it'll be somebody in the gas mart. I said, wow. Now,
this is a man of integrity. I've known him a

(04:18):
long time. I've admired him a long time. I have
just never heard of anybody asking God for that. We
pulled off, we're getting our gas, and we're about to
go in the gas mart. I love to go in
gas marks at the middle of the night. There's nothing
healthy in there. It's all good and you go in
and get the food. So we walk in the gas

(04:42):
mart and I'm telling you, there's him, there's me and
a lady behind the counter. This thing is lit brilliantly bright.
There's nobody else there. We grab some soda pops, we
get some snacks. We walk up to the counter, put
him down. What he next startled me. Young girl probably

(05:03):
in her early thirties, behind the counter looking at us,
and the way he said it was all wrong. The
preacher looked at her and said, are you ready to die?
And he said, I mean if you died, do you

(05:26):
know where you'd go? Heaven or hell? Which is it?
And I looked at him and I thought, you're like
a mack truck. What about you know? My name's Bob.
What's your name? I mean, he scared me. Her eyes

(05:53):
got like silver dollars, and she's looking at us, not
saying a word, and real she takes her hand back
and she starts reaching under the counter, and I thought,
oh no, she's got a gun back there. I'm gonna
die in a gas mark because you didn't know how

(06:15):
to ask somebody about whether they're saved or not. She
reaches down under there and she starts coming up, and
she comes up with a bible and she looks at
us and she breaks into a smile and she says, oh,
thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you.

(06:38):
What a blessing. She said, I'm saved. I'm on my
way to heaven. I've asked Jesus to save me. This
is my bible. But I've always told the Lord I'd
love somebody to come in here and just witness to
me and thank you, thank you, thank you. That was wonderful.

(07:02):
And I thought, oh, she's saved. We're not gonna see
anything here. She said, I'm saved. I'm on my way
to heaven. How this other lady got in there, I
can't tell you. But a lady is suddenly standing behind us.

(07:24):
And she said, well, she may know where she's going,
but I don't. I about to come out of my shoes.
Where'd you come from? Whoa? That lady said to him.

(07:44):
God didn't send you here for her. God sent you
here for me. She said. One week ago, I buried
my mother. On my mother's death bed, she pled with
me to trust Christ and I said no, and she
died in my arms, with her begging me. I haven't

(08:07):
been able to sleep for a week. She said, I
am so afraid I'm going to die and go to Hell.
And so I said, well, I'll walk down to the
gas martin get some stuff for the kid's breakfast in
the morning. I walked in here. You're just talking to
the wrong lady. You're supposed to talk to me, My

(08:29):
dear black preacher said, God bless you, you're saved. I
need to talk to her. He turns around and never
asked the lady to get on her knees, But she
just gets on her knees on a linoleum floor. He
gets on his knees and he starts taking her through
the gospel. Now, while he's doing that, two truck drivers

(08:54):
walk in and they come walking over by us, and
they're looking at this. Here's a black man on the
floor with an open bible, another lady on the floor,
a girl behind the counter, and me standing there watching.
And they came walking up and they said, is this
a stick up? And I said no, And before I

(09:21):
could say anything, the girl behind the counter starts some
of you know, some women will talk when the phone
doesn't even ring. I mean, they just jump in. She
jumps in and tells the whole story in detail. They
came in here, they bought soda pop, they bought snacks.

(09:41):
They walked up here. They asked me if I was saved.
Would I go to heaven. I reached down here and
got my Bible. They said, I told him I'm saved.
But man, I just have been praying God and let
somebody come in here who cared enough to try to
witness to me. But it wasn't me, it was for
It was her. She let her I'm a die in her.
She told everything, and she's getting saved right now. And

(10:16):
the one truck driver turned to the other and he said,
I need to join them. He said, we've been talking
all night. I'm not sure I'm going to heaven. And
without asking, he gets on his knees and he said,
could you help me too? Oh you say, brother Gibbs,

(10:50):
that had never happened for me. You've not asked that,
man asked, you have not because you ask not. Boy.
He led both of those people to Christ while we're
I'm just standing watching. He gave both of them a
gospel track. They gave him names and numbers. He said,

(11:11):
I'm gonna have a preacher in this area contact you.
We walked out to the car and I said, Brother Glinda,
I've never seen anything like that. He said, David, you
could do it. He said, you see, I'm no good
at it. But I got a God that loves to

(11:33):
use weakness, and I've asked you could ask. Do you
understand there's twelve disciples in the boat and only one asked?
And because only one asked, there's only going to be
one water walker that night, John, Matthew Mark, Why don't

(12:01):
you guys ask?

Speaker 1 (12:03):
Why?

Speaker 4 (12:03):
Just Peter? We won't know the answer to that till
we get to heaven. But here's my question. Why haven't
I asked? Why haven't you asked? Oh? We tell everybody
God answers prayer. How many of you believe God answers prayer?

Speaker 1 (12:23):
He does?

Speaker 4 (12:27):
What have the kids? What have our friends seen us
ask for? That's impossible? Lord bid me come unto thee
on the water. He met God's first condition. He asked, Now,

(12:51):
would you write this down? When the Bible says ask,
and you shall receive the word ask means with specificity.
God already knows it's not for his benefit, it's for
your benefit for mine. How specific are you asking? Now

(13:11):
write the second condition down? And by the way, if
you're not going to ask, the other conditions are irrelevant.
It all starts with asking. And to the men, here
has your wife heard you ask for the impossible? Have

(13:32):
our kids heard us ask? Oh, it'll change everything? Number one,
You got to ask, write the second one down after
you ask. You have to get your eyes off of
the circumstances. Peter, let me help you here. The storm

(13:54):
is raging. We've been caught in this storm now for
hours and hours. Tonight is not a good night to
even stand up in the boat, let alone thinking of
standing and getting outside of it. And if you're gonna
go walking, why don't you just wait till there's a
calm sea. And why don't you wait till we're in

(14:17):
shallow water. The circumstances aren't right, Peter, sit down and
shut up. You know what, Most people aren't paralyzed by
their circumstances. Now's not a good time for that in
this economy. No, no, no, now's not the moment. Maybe later. Oh,

(14:40):
you missed your chance. And you know what, You're paralyzed
by circumstances. And as long as your eyes are caught
on circumstances, you'll never do the impossible. The circumstances paralyze.
Flip over just a chapter or two in the Book

(15:02):
of Matthew and read with me Matthew, Chapter nineteen, verse
twenty six. But Jesus beheld them and said, unto them.
With men, this is impossible. Do you understand? It's impossible,
whether the circumstances are good or bad. With men, this

(15:25):
is impossible. But with God, all things are possible. When's
the last time you said, God, you don't have to
fix any of the circumstances. If the circumstances were perfect,
it's impossible. But my faith is not in better circumstances.

(15:45):
My faith is in God. And yeah, you couldn't have
picked the worst night to stand up in the boat.
You couldn't have picked the worst night to go water walking.
It's dead dark outside, spray is flying everywhere. We're mortified,
we think we're going to die. And now you want
to get out of the boat, Peter. There could have

(16:08):
been twelve water walkers that night, but only one asked,
and the rest were paralyzed by their circumstances. What I'm
about to tell you isn't in the Bible. But my
experience is the more talented you are, the better educated
you are, the more likely you're going to be able

(16:30):
to explain why something's impossible. And so all of a
sudden circumstances get well elocuted. They're there and boy, and
all of a sudden, we're paralyzed by that. God wants
you to do the impossible in spite of circumstances. I

(16:55):
got a wonderful call from a preacher and he said,
Brother gives, I need your legal help. I said, what's
that's wrong? He said, they passed a law up here
to stop me from handing out gospel tracks. And I said, well,
we're getting these laws everywhere, and we're getting them defeated.
But I said, don't take it personal. He said, no, no, no.
When they passed the law, I was sitting there and

(17:15):
they said this is to stop him. I said, wow,
by the way, would anybody have to pass a law
to stop you or will we just do it for free?
I said, let me call the attorney there, and I
called the county and the prosecutor there, and I said,
this guy thinks you passed this law about handing out
gospel tracks forbidding it to stop him. And you know

(17:37):
what they said we did. They said, you don't understand
this guy is like Superman. I said, what do you mean?
They said, he is this dynamo he hands out four
hundred tracks a day, and he's turning our town upside down.
He's got a Catholic priest here who's gotten I don't

(18:01):
know if you've ever heard this term, mister Gibbs born again.
He said, have you ever heard that term? I said, yeah,
I've heard that term, right. He said, I'm telling you now,
you're gonna come up here and get it overturned. We're
just trying to slow him down. I said, well, I'm
gonna come up there and get that overturned. Boy. I
called that preacher back. I said, they passed it to

(18:23):
stop you, so I told you they did. I said, well,
I'm coming. I'm gonna help you, man. I flew up there.
The church sent the totally wrong person to pick me
up at the airport. I come off the plane, I'm
walking out, and here is this extremely bent over, extraordinarily

(18:47):
arthritically infected person. When he walks, he doesn't walks, he's
all lunched over and he's walking sideways and his hands
are gnarl up. And he said, I wish I could
carry your briefcase. I said no, no, no, no no,

(19:08):
And he said, you go on, you go on. He
said it'll take me a minute to get down there.
He said, I don't walk too good. I said, no, no,
I want to stay with you. And all the time
I'm thinking, what is the church thinking making this? Dear
man do this? We get down by my bag and
he said I can't help you with that. I just
can't lift stuff. And I said, boy, don't you worry

(19:31):
about it? I said, can I ask your permission? I said,
the preacher shouldn't send you to do this. He just
shouldn't do it. I want to ask him to not
do that again. And that man looked at me and
he said, brother Gibbs, I am the preacher. I said,
you're superman. You're the guy who hands out four hundred

(19:53):
tracks a day. What he said next changed my life.
He said, you can tell I'm extremely damaged goods. He said,
no one but God would choose me. He said, growing up,
no team wanted me. He said, I've been like this
since birth. But he said, I asked, and by God's grace,

(20:13):
I'm not letting these circumstances run my life. And I said,
how do you do four hundred tracks a day? He said,
it's the impossible. What's your excuse? What's got you paralyzed.
You got to ask. And number two, you got to
get your eyes off of the circumstances. There will always

(20:38):
be a storm, there'll always be a reason, and God's
not governed by any of it. You got to ask,
You got to forget the circumstances. Write the third condition down,
and it's in the story. Lord bid me come unto
thee and he said come. And when he has come

(21:00):
down out of the ship, he walked on the water
to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous,
he was afraid and beginning to sink. He cried, saying, Lord,
save me. Now Peter asked, got his eyes off of
the circumstances. Now he's going to get out of the

(21:21):
boat to go to Jesus. And he does the third condition.
It's real simple. Number one, you got to ask. Number two,
you got to get your eyes off of circumstances, and
number three you got to get rid of your plan B.
You say, what do you mean by that, Brother Schetler,
my dear friend here, if we'd have been in the
boat together, I'd have said, brother Jim, let's go water walking.

(21:45):
But Jesus, come over here a little closer. Come here,
come this way, because just in case you don't pull
it off, I want to be where if I start
to sink, I can grab the boat because I love
a plan B. Write this down. Your plan B is
an insult to God. It's an insult to God. Now

(22:09):
people are gonna say, no, no, no, no, no, you
want a plan B. In fact, if you're anything like me,
I love a plan B, C, D, E, F, G H.
And I I love a backup to a backup, to
a backup to a backup. But you know what you're
saying to him, I'm not quite sure you're gonna do this.
And in James One it said when you ask, you

(22:30):
have to ask in faith. And then it says not
double minded. And you know what. It then says, if
you're double minded, you're like the waves of the sea
frost to and throw. And it says, let not that
man think he shall receive anything of the Lord. When's
the last time you said, I'm putting one hundred percent

(22:53):
of my faith in you. You see, Peter was out
there so far he didn't have the anymore. And that's
why when he started to sink, because he got his
eyes back on the circumstances, Jesus reached down and rescued him.
He didn't have a plan B. You got to ask,
You got to get your eyes off of the circumstances,

(23:16):
and you got to get rid of a plan B
in our ministry. Once we were getting ready to leave
and we didn't have the money to make the trip
to go do the trial. We literally had money for
one tank of fuel, and we're going to go pretty
much halfway across the country. And I knew we were
supposed to go. And we started and we drove, and

(23:38):
we ran the tank dry, and when it was sputtering,
we pulled up by a gas station, no money, and
several of the wonderful people with me said, well, you
got us in a mess. By the way, there will
be people who will say this idea of God doing
something impossible. Boy, if you got us in a mess.

(24:00):
We're sitting there and I'm thinking, Lord, I knew we're
supposed to do this, and I asked, and I don't
have a plan B. What do we do now? And
all of a sudden, a guy came out, took the
pump handle and smashed it against the pump mad as
a hornet, and he said, I just went in there

(24:23):
and accidentally put too much on my credit card and
they won't give it back and it won't go in
my car. He said, could you use any fuel? I said, yeah,
we could be talked into that. We can do that. Sure,
you know what you read the great missionary stories, you
great the great founding father stories. They had no plan B.

(24:46):
It's called faith, they asked. They got their eyes off
of the circumstances, and they said, our faith's in him.
There is no plan B to this right, the fourth
one down. You got to get out of the boat.
Number one, you gotta ask. Number two, you got to

(25:06):
get your eyes and your thinking and your thoughts off
of the circumstances. Number three, you gotta jettison a plan
be A plan be says, I got some faith in God,
but not that much because if he doesn't come through,
I still got to backup. And then you got to
be ready to step out. When's the last time you
got out of the boat for God? Most people just

(25:28):
want a better seat in the boat because everybody thinks
that's wise. When is the last time you stepped out
for the Lord by faith? Now maybe that comes easy
for you, but I want to confess I've struggled with that. Oh.
It's easy to stand up here and say and do it,
but to do it and to say, by God's grace,

(25:50):
I'm spiritually gonna go water walking my God. Not doing
something great my God, doing the impossible, it will change everything.
If you don't ask, you'll never step out. If you
don't get your eyes off of the circumstances, you'll be paralyzed.

(26:10):
If you're harboring a plan be Oh, I'm going to
tell you right now. The Lord knows it. You'll have
no trouble fooling me, but none of us fool him.
And he knows your faith's not in him to do
it because you're double minded on it. And then you've
got to be willing to step out. We admire great
men who've stepped out. We admire the men in scripture

(26:32):
that did it. But am I willing to do it?
Are you willing to do it? Why do you want
to waste your life merely doing something great for God?
When God invites you to do the impossible for him, David,
I'd love for God to use me to do something

(26:53):
impossible for his honor, for his glory. Then you got
to ask, and you got to get your eyes off
of the circumstances, and no plan be that's double minded,
and you gotta be willing to step out by faith.
When Peter stepped over the edge of that boat, everybody

(27:13):
in the boat would have said, he gonna get wet,
he's gonna sink. And there was only one guy with
the faith to step out, and that was Peter. Why
do you want to live your life hunkered down in
life's rowboat? When God says, ask, nothing's impossible with me,

(27:35):
Ask tonight. I don't know what the Lord had lay
on your heart. I don't know what you need to
ask for. The one thing I know is my God's
the same yesterday today, And what's the next word? Forever?
And my God will use you. I still remember my
preacher friend in the airport, all hunched over. I'm the

(28:00):
very damaged Goods brother Gibbs. Nobody ever wanted me on
their team except God, and God just uses me to
do the impossible. Tonight, I invite you not just to
know these things, but by the grace of God, to
be willing to step out of the boat, to get

(28:22):
rid of the plan B, to get your eyes off
of the circumstances, and by the grace of God, to
ask Father, thank you for tonight these precious people, by
your grace, by your power. Without you, we're nothing. We're
just mere men, mere women. But God, we're your children.

(28:43):
And while it's impossible with men, the verse says nothing,
nothing is impossible with God. And by your grace, we
want to be the people who show this world our
God does the impossible.
