Pastor Brandon Holm (00:54):
Welcome,
guildmates. We're diving back
into our series, Make Up YourMind. As we level up in life, as
it's wise to make some toughdecisions at the start. Just
like in an RPG, making solidchoices early can give you the
momentum to power through thechallenges ahead. Today, we're
focusing on the crucial battlein our minds, deciding between
(01:16):
the pressure the presence of Godand the pressure of the world.
Our thoughts are the compassthat guide our lives. The enemy
loves to throw distractions andpressures our way to make us
doubt, panic, and even despair.Think about your favorite RPG.
Before embarking on a quest, youcheck your inventory, equip your
character, and set your mind onthe goal. Well, we need to do
(01:39):
the same in our spiritualjourney.
We're aiming to love God withall our hearts, soul, strength,
and minds. This year, let'schoose to set our minds above
focusing on heavenly wisdomrather than the worldly tactics
that can lead us astray.Colossians 32 says it simply,
(02:01):
set your minds on the thingsthat are above, not on things
that are on earth. Now, we face2 coaches in the spiritual game.
Our fleshly nature, and ourspiritual nature.
In 2024, we need to make theconscious decision to walk with
Jesus. The game mechanic aswritten by Paul in Galatians 5
(02:23):
16 is simple, but I say, walk bythe spirit, and you will not
gratify the desires of theflesh. In playing an RPG, nearly
every decision you makeinfluences your character's
path. If you choose to focus onleveling up your character
skills, you become a powerfulwarrior or mage. Conversely, if
(02:45):
you neglect training, you findyourself lagging behind.
The same principle applies toour spiritual lives. We have a
choice. Will we invest time inour relationship with Jesus, or
will we let the distractions oflife pull us away? Another way
to view this in a video game ifyou stop pressing forward, your
character starts sliding back. It's the same in life.
(03:07):
If we don't actively pursueJesus, we default to feeling
fulfilling the desires of ourflesh. We don't have to choose
sin actively, neglecting ourwalk with Jesus opens the door
to it. Now, let's be intentionalabout our choices. Are we going
to choose fear or faith? Are wegoing to embrace the pressure of
(03:30):
life or step into the presenceof God?
Jesus spoke plainly and plainly.Watch and pray that you may not
enter into temptation. Thespirit indeed is willing, but
the flesh is weak. Thebattlefield of our minds is
where the real action takesplace. Every day presents a new
(03:53):
quest, a new challenge.
It's like choosing your class ina game. Each one has its
strengths and weaknesses. Wehave to constantly assess our
stats. Are we feeding our faith? Are we equipping ourselves with
the armor of God as mentioned inour last series and in Ephesians
6 10 through 18?
When faced with pressure ortemptation, we can equip
(04:14):
ourselves with the truths ofscripture. Just like potions
restore health and games, theword of God restores our souls.
He sent out his word and healedthem and delivered them from
their destruction. Each verse wememorize, each prayer we offer
is like leveling up ourcharacter. We can strengthen our
resolve to walk with Jesus byimmersing ourselves in his word
(04:36):
and choosing faith over fear.
Let's not forget that ourjourney is not meant to be
traveled alone. We have allies, fellow believers who can walk
alongside us in our quests. It'sessential to find a party,
friends who encourage us, praywith us, and hold us
accountable. Just as a balancedteam in a game is essential for
(04:56):
victory, so is having a solidcommunity in our walk with
Christ. And let me reiterateProverbs 2717.
Iron sharpens iron, and one mansharpens another. So let's
unpack the concept of presenceversus pressure. When I
(05:18):
mentioned pressure I'm nottalking about the healthy kind,
you know, like the pressure thatkeeps your car tires inflated or
our hearts beating. I'mreferring to the anxious
pressure that comes from a worryand fear. The kind that can
crush our spirits.
You know, Psalm 84 paints abeautiful picture of the
presence of God with a greatline that fills us with peace.
(05:39):
For a day in your courts isbetter than a 1,000 elsewhere.
You know, sounds like a lineyour character would use to woo
a maiden or gentleman. Am Iright? Well, this speaks to the
yearning that we should have tobe in God's presence.
When we experience the presenceof God, we can face any
challenge. We can move throughlife, weep you know, life's
(06:01):
weeping weeping moments knowingthat we are going from strength
to strength. The pressure weface can feel overwhelming. In a
game when you're under attack,it's easy to panic especially in
an end boss and an unskippablecutscene should you die. You
might feel the urge to run, toflee, or even throw your
controller in frustration.
(06:22):
But what if instead ofsuccumbing to that pressure, we
leaned on God's presence. Now Iknow it's not gonna get you away
from that unskippable cutsceneevery time you die in the game,
but you know, at least you'renot throwing controllers into
TVs. Pressure often stems fromfear. It's that nagging feeling
that we don't have enough orthat we're not enough. Fear is a
(06:46):
form of faith, but faith in theenemy rather than in God.
You know, this understanding ishow we face our fears, and
overcome them is a gift fromGod. For God gave us a spirit
not of fear, but of power andlove and self control. We often
feel pressure when we lookaround and see the chaos of the
(07:08):
world. Will we lose our jobs? Will our relationships survive?
What if I can't pay the bills? In those moments we must
remember that our faith is notrooted in circumstances, but in
our unwavering God. Consider howin games we often have to face
the final boss, and the pressuremounts, and it can be easy to
(07:31):
succumb to fear. But think aboutthe character we control. They
have abilities and tools.
Well, guess what? So do we. Inmoments of pressure, we can call
upon God's power, tap into hislove, and regain our sound mind.
As first Peter 5:7 reminds us tocasting all your anxieties onto
(07:51):
him because he cares for you. When we choose to walk in his
presence, we are equipped toface any challenge.
Let's explore God's presence.How how God's presence acts like
a power up in our lives. You'rein the heat of battle. Your
health is low, and you find ahealth potion. When you thought
(08:12):
there were none, instantlyyou're revitalized.
That's what God's presence doesfor our spirits. It revitalizes
us, gives us hope, and allows usto persevere. What does it mean
to experience the presence ofGod? It's when we sense him in
the room that palpable feelingthat he's here with us. It isn't
(08:33):
just an abstract idea, it's areal experience we can have.
There are times when God'spresence overwhelms us, when we
feel a connection deeper thanthe best co op gaming session.
It's those moments where weexperience his glory in ways
that are simply unexplainable. In high stakes battle in an RPG,
your character is possibly weak, but then you receive a sudden
(08:56):
buff. You feel invincible. That's what it's like when God's
present sends upon us.
Our worries fade away, and we'refilled with his presence. Isaiah
26:3 tells us, you keep him inperfect peace though whose mind
is stayed on you, because hetrusts in you. In the Bible,
(09:19):
there are numerous examples ofpeople encountering God's
presence. Think of Moses at theburning bush. He was just
minding his own business, bringing being a shepherd
looking for a wayward animalwhen God shows up and changed
everything.
Or consider the moment when theIsraelites encountered God at
Mount Sinai after their travelsout of Egypt. The power of his
(09:39):
presence was so strong that theytrembled in fear, especially
after the golden calf incident. We can have the same level
experiences today. It might notbe a burning bush or a mountain,
but God's presence is real andtangible. Now, here's a thought.
Have you ever had a moment whereyou felt so close to God that
(10:02):
time seems to stand still? Maybeyou were in a worship service,
or perhaps you were outsideadmiring the beauty of creation.
In those moments, we realizethat our earthly struggles
shrink in comparison to theglory of God. When we commit to
seek seeking his presence, wefind strength and hope in even
the most challengingcircumstances. James reminds us
(10:25):
and admonishes us when he wrote, draw near to God and he will
draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands you sinners, and purify your hearts you
double minded. What doespressure reveal about our
hearts? In the heat of themoment when we feel that anxious
pressure, it serves as a gauge,a warning light in our spiritual
(10:46):
dashboard. It indicates thatjust something is off balance.
Augustine said that anxietyoften stems from a love of good
things becoming too important.
This means that, even ourblessings can become burdens if
we idolize them. If we look toanything other than God for
security, be it our job, ourrelationships, or even our
(11:08):
health, we set ourselves up foranxiety. Now, think of the story
of the Philistines and the Arkof God in Samuel in 1st Samuel
5. Philistines capture the Arkthinking it would give them
power, but what happened? Thestatue of their god Dagon fell
(11:30):
and broke before the arch.
This demonstrates how any falsegod we cling to will ultimately
fail us. When we feel anxious weneed to examine what's causing
that pressure. Are we relyingtoo heavily on something other
than God? It's like trying toequip the character with a sword
made of paper. It won't hold upin battle.
(11:52):
This pressure points to ouridols. Things we look to for
strength or security instead ofGod. Think about it. Look at the
people who are, you know, getall this money during a big
lottery run, and within thefirst five years more than half
or all of it is gone. So let'sfollow the trail of our worries.
(12:15):
Are we anxious about finances?Like I said, those folks who won
the lottery. Maybe we've placedtoo much trust in our job rather
than in God's provision. Are weworried about relationships?
Perhaps we're seeking validationfrom others instead of finding
our identity in Christ.
Now, this pressure can be agift. It reveals that it really
(12:37):
reveals what we need to handover to God. We must remember
that when we feel overwhelmedit's an opportunity to realign
our priorities, and seek thetrue source of our strength. So,
how do we keep coming back toGod's presence especially when
the pressures mount? The firststep is simple, ask for it.
(12:58):
James 1:5 encourages us, if anyof you lacks wisdom, let him ask
God who gives generously in allwithout reproach and will be
given to him. And you might befeeling distant from God
thinking, why hasn't he shown upfor me? Have you asked him? Have
you lingered in his presence?Sometimes we miss out on our
(13:20):
experiences with God, because wedon't put ourselves in the right
position to receive them.
I have that problem too so don'tthink I'm perfect in all this.
And just like in a game, if youwant to gain experience points
you have to engage in questionchallenges. We need to actively
seek God. Mary Magdalene was thefirst to see the risen Christ
(13:41):
because she stayed close afterhis death. We need to cultivate
that same kind of persistence inseeking God.
When you enter a new area in agame, you often need to explore
it fully to unlock all itssecrets and treasures. The same
goes for our spiritual lives. When we draw near to God, we
discover more of his character, his love, and his power. Jesus
(14:05):
said, come to me all who laborand are heavy laden and I will
give you rest. He invites us tobring our burdens and pressures
to him.
We need to be intentional aboutputting ourselves in situations
where we can encounter hispresence through worship,
prayer, and community. So, as weas I wrap up this week's
(14:28):
message, let's remember the keychoice we need to make. Choosing
the presence of God over thepressure of the world. This
year, especially being anelection year, let's focus on
keeping our minds stayed on him, allowing his presence to guide
us through the toughestchallenges we face. In every
moment of anxiety or pressure, let's remind ourselves of the
(14:48):
ultimate truth.
We have a God who is not onlywith us, but is powerful enough
to take care of us. As we goforth, let's make our up our
minds to seek his presence. After all as gamers we know that
the best power ups come when welean into our source and find
them. May God bless you as youchoose his presence over
(15:12):
pressure today and every dayfrom here on out.
