Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey you welcome to
the coaching minds podcast, the
official podcast of mentaltraining plan, today talking
about the MTP certification andwhat that program looks like,
who it's for.
Later on we're even going totalk with Danny Tippett, who was
the first coach to go throughthe MTP certification.
On the front end.
(00:22):
At the start it was really justkind of an invite only thing
where we reached out to a fewcoaches, uh, who we knew already
had some interest.
The the training was sosuccessful that we are going to
start opening this up and youknow, really my vision from the
from the start of this thing wasthese tools need to be in every
(00:42):
single high school all acrossthe world.
Colleges, universities, peopleneed to be equipped with these
tools, and so I really just wantto start with a quick recap of
our story, because I knowthere's going to be some new
people listening on here.
(01:04):
So you know, in 1999, that wasthe first time that I really
experienced some failure on themental side of the game, and I
ended up starting the inauguralgame on our brand new baseball
diamond and I couldn't throw theball back to the pitcher and it
was like something cameunplugged between my head and my
(01:25):
hand and I had absolutely noidea what to do about it and
went home, got on my dial upInternet and it was like what's
happening?
How do I make sure this neverhappens again?
Turns out there was a wholefield, there were fields of
research where they were helpingpeople perform at a higher
level and it was like, oh man,you mean you can train
(01:48):
confidence and certainlysomething that was brand new to
me at the time 2002, I graduatedand went and played for Chris
Creighton at Wabash College andwe had a champion's manual.
That was awesome.
It was like a collection of allkinds of quotes and sayings and
articles and everything that hehad kind of gathered.
(02:10):
And you know, he was really thefirst person that I ran to that
was trying to systemize andsort of put into a program.
Hey, here's how we can trainthe mental side of the game.
Here's how you can be a littlemore mentally tough.
You know, I got hired to teachand coach at Westfield in 2008.
(02:32):
In 2013, we had the mosttalented team in school history
and we go down to Lucas OilStadium and just collapsed, I
mean physically.
We had guys that couldn'tcontrol their body.
They had shaky hands trying tocatch the ball.
Emotionally, we had guys intears on the sidelines that just
lost control, I mean mentally.
(02:53):
We had guys that were just sodistracted by the environment
that we were playing in and thestage that we were on that it
was like guys just play footballthat we were on that.
It was like guys just playfootball.
But at the end of the daythat's like being the coach that
stands on the sideline andscreams catch the ball and it's
like, well, yeah, what do youthink I was trying to do?
(03:15):
That's not coaching, that'sjust yelling.
And so I really think what wewere doing at the time we knew
we wanted mental toughness.
We knew mental toughness wasimportant, but we were just
standing on the sidelinesscreaming for kids to be
mentally tough.
We weren't actually teachingthem how to do that.
That off season really dove inheadfirst to the world of
(03:39):
self-assessment.
I was getting my master'sdegree at the time, trying to
help.
I was getting my master'sdegree at the time, you know,
(04:12):
trying to help, trying to comeup with a way to figure how do
we equip in a room full of 150guys, how do we give everyone
what they need to solve theirproblems and their pain points.
You know, from that the focuscycle was born.
You know, all a sudden we goback and we win a state
championship and now, all of asudden, some heads are turning
and it's like wait a minute, whyis Westfield winning games?
(04:33):
They used to be terrible.
They used to win like threegames a year.
What's going on?
Started working with the golfprogram, started working with
individuals from colleges anduniversities and high schools,
started working with othersports and other teams and
eventually, in 2022, I left theclassroom to start doing this
(04:55):
full time.
And you know that reallystarted to grow with one-on-one
sessions when I was invested inthe lives of these athletes who
there was.
Just there was something thatwasn't right, and sometimes it
was a competence issue.
They had put in the time, theyhad put in the work, but they
(05:17):
just couldn't get rid of thatlittle voice of doubt in the
back of their mind.
Or, you know, maybe they werejust too distracted by all these
college recruiters that werenow coming, or maybe they were
being crushed by the weight ofexpectations that they had for
themselves or mom and dad hadfor them.
Or, you know, now they were atwo-year starter and now,
(05:39):
heading into their senior year, their coach is expecting them to
be this catalyst on the team.
And you know, as I started tohelp these kids go through a
mental skills assessment andevaluate, like, where are you at
in each of these differentareas that we call the prime
five?
And you really start to get anidea of, ok, here's kind of this
(06:02):
athlete's mental profile.
Here's their strengths andweaknesses.
Here's some foundational toolsthat everybody needs.
Here's some tools that arespecific to what you're
struggling with.
And you know, as you, as youhelp these athletes realize
what's going on, be aware ofwhat's going on, you know, like
(06:22):
right now you're not payingattention to what the bottom of
your feet feel like because yourbrain doesn't think that's
important.
There's some times that westart to get off track and we
don't even realize it.
So help the athletes withawareness, equip them with tools
to take back control and then, you know, eventually, over the
(06:43):
long haul, be able to take backcontrol in such a way that we
start to rewire their brain sothat they don't even have some
of these same reactions in thefirst place.
Now, all of a sudden, like thisisn't just helping people be
better golfers and betterfootball players and better
(07:04):
professional race car drivers.
These are helping people inevery area of their life, taking
back control from anxiousthoughts, being able to focus on
the task at hand and be presentin the moment, being able to
walk into that presentation atwork.
That's way more pressure thanyou ever felt on a baseball or a
(07:28):
softball diamond, because youknow, if you close this deal,
this is going to have financialimplications for your family.
You're going to be able to feedthem, put a roof over your head
, like that.
They were using this stuff inreal life and so I didn't really
have to advertise.
I just had to do such a goodjob that it changed people's
(07:50):
lives and they told everybodythey knew.
And so, you know, the, theone-on-ones really started to
blow up.
Uh, the the it's really justspread via word of mouth.
There was, there was one pointwhere on a local high school
golf team that I was workingwith four of the five starting
golfers on that in that programand you know they all sort of
(08:13):
came to me at different timesbut as word of mouth spread that
, hey, this stuff actually works, people wanted more of it.
And so, you know, then I startedgetting approached by hey, can
you come in and work with theentire team.
Hey, can you come in and workwith these business
professionals?
(08:33):
You know people that are saying, hey, you know I've got these
relationships with thesefirefighters and you know
there's some life and deathstuff here, that there's a lot
of pressure.
They need some of these toolsalso, and you know it was hey,
can you come over here and dothis training on the East coast
and hey, can you come over hereand do this, this stuff down in
(08:55):
Texas.
And you know, as we started tokind of grow the brand into if
not just a central Indiana thingor a North side of Indianapolis
thing, but more of a statewideMidwest national type of thing,
started to realize like we gotto start equipping other people
(09:16):
to be able to do this, becausethere is absolutely no way that
I can work with all of theseathletes and all of these teams
and all of these differentlocations.
That was a little bit of theheart behind the MTP Academy,
but with the MTP certification, this is more for people who want
(09:38):
to do what I did and what I'mdoing.
If you're sitting out there andyou're thinking, man, yes,
that's the kind of impact I wantto have on athletes.
I want to be able to comealongside them, I want to be
able to help them figure out, like what's going on, what's
wrong, what are some of theobstacles that are in the way,
(10:01):
that are preventing me fromplaying at my absolute best, and
then teach them and equip themwith skills and tools to take
back control of their mind andbody, to be able to perform at
their best in these highpressure moments.
Perform at their best in thesehigh pressure moments and then,
you know, over a long period oftime, be able to help them
(10:22):
completely rewire their brainsso that they don't have that
same reaction, they don't havethat same automatic response to
these stressful situations.
They just sort of see it aspart of the process.
And if you're thinking like, yes, I want to do that, mtp
(10:43):
certification was designed foryou and so what the
certification looks like iswe'll come in, it's all day long
, they are in-person only.
We've explored potentiallygrowing this into an online
training at some point, but youknow, to be honest, right now we
just we want this to in orderto protect the brand a little
(11:05):
bit, in order to make sure thatwe're doing things the right way
, that we're answering questions, that we're truly equipping
people so that when they leavethey feel like, yes, I'm ready,
I can go do this.
I can go run my own business orI can work with the athletes at
my school or, you know, I cando this as a part-time gig or
(11:25):
even a full-time gig.
You know we're going to takethem through the what we call
MTP1, which is our one-on-onecoaching platform personalized
coaching sessions that focus onathletes' individual needs.
We do a mental skillsassessment.
We come up with a customizedplan.
(11:46):
We put them through phase oneto be able to take back control.
We put them through phase twoto help them change and rewire
how their brain is respondingand reacting in these high
pressure situations.
And then we do the same thingwith MTP workshops.
You get the same PowerPointsthat I use when I do the focus
(12:08):
cycle presentation.
You get the same worksheetsthat you can print off and you
can start doing team sessions onthe biopsychology of team
sports.
We take you through the MTPAcademy so that you are now able
to go out and sell this toschools.
You get a nice commission ifschools sign up and now you can
(12:30):
be that coach that if they haveissues, they come to you If you
know they've got athletes whoneed individual help, they come
to you.
If they've got athletes who needindividual help, they come to
you.
The football team at thatschool decides.
You know what?
I think we need to do a deepdive on the focus cycle, or
we're going to do biopsychologyof team sports here.
Right before the sectionals orplayoffs or something like that,
(12:53):
they come to you and then, whether your vision is to be the
expert at your school or yourvision is to be the expert in
your community, you know how touse these assessment tools so
that you can get a snapshot ofwhere is this individual at or
where is this entire team at.
(13:14):
What do they need?
What are the prime five toolsthat we need to equip them with?
What are the systems and theframework that we're going to
use to train them?
What are the basics thateverybody needs?
And then how do we customizethis based on individual needs
like your age, what sport youplay, the things you're
(13:37):
struggling with, the goals youhave for the future.
Our goal is for you to be ableto leave that training and hit
the ground running and startpicking up one-on-one clients,
start working with teams A fewother perks that come along with
