Dr Jessica Patella (00:00):
Sometimes we say morning sickness, but we
know that it does not just lastin the morning, that it can last
all day long.

Dr Bola Sogade (00:23):
Hello and welcome to CocoaPods podcast.
My name is Dr Bola Sogade.
I'm a women's health specialist.
We have been talking to DrJessica Patella, a naturopathic
physician, who has been talkingto us about naturopathic
medicine with respect tomaternal health.

Dr Jessica Patella (00:42):
Perfect example that ginger would be
more of the botanical medicine,right?
Or just food as medicine, whereyou can actually take the
ginger because it can be calmingto the stomach and you could
just slice some fresh ginger andput it in hot water and just
make your own ginger tea.
So that would be more of like afood as medicine or even a

(01:03):
plant medicine that you coulduse.
Peppermint sometimes is helpfultoo for calming the stomach for
some.
Yes, so that would be, yeah, great example of the difference
between the two.
And then another remedy thatcan be really helpful for women
that have a lot of nausea.
That kind of lasts all dayright.

(01:24):
So sometimes we say morningsickness, but we know that it
does not just last in themorning, that it can last all
day long and sometimes justnothing relieves it, right.
You can have kind of the smallbits of crackers or little bites
of food and just nothing willtouch the nausea.
So in that case a good remedyis Ipecac, which is I-P-E-C-A-C,

(01:45):
and that's a good remedy whenyou kind of have this like
nauseous feeling that just won'tgo away and is lasting all day
long.
So those are kind of the toptwo remedies in pregnancy for
women that are dealing with thatnausea in the beginning stages
and now I'm going to kind oftransition us closer to that
time period of labor Before wekind of get to that point.

(02:10):
One remedy I wanted to sharewith you is pulsatilla.
The homeopathic remedypulsatilla sometimes can be used
if the baby's malpositioned.
Now of course you can dophysical medicine right with
different maneuvers to try tohave that baby move into proper
position, but that could besupported with taking a
homeopathic remedy as well.

(02:31):
And typically this mother ispulsatilla.
If somebody's in a pulsatillastate they tend to be more
emotional, very weepy and kindof better outside in cooler air.
So if that kind of fits thatpicture, that might be something
to consider for a mother that'strying to get that baby into
the proper position towards thelater stages of pregnancy.

Dr Bola Sogade (02:53):
And that's pulsatilla.

Dr Jessica Patella (02:55):
Yes, yes.
And then when we go, I alsohave some labor remedies for you
and we transition into labor.
So you'll see that some ofthese kind of they change right.
So just because there's oneremedy right, we have different
stages to labor and they kind ofprogress and become more

(03:15):
intense the closer you get tothe actual delivery.
So, having homeopathic remedies, they likely will change during
that time period.
I don't I can't remember if Itold you this story or not, but
I had a home birth.
We were at home for our firstdaughter and I was like, oh,
I'll be able to treat myselfwith homeopathic remedies.

(03:37):
You know I had them all lined upon the counter and you know I
watched all the things aboutwomen that seem to, just, you
know, have a baby and it's likethey just took another breath
and it was no big deal.
And then I was, like you know,in the stages of labor and I was
like, wow, this is not me, likeI cannot treat myself Like you
know, I just kind of you go intosome like zone or meditative

(04:01):
state or whatever.
So the second time around I hada whole printed list that I
gave my husband and I was like, okay, if I say these things,
these are the remedies that yougive me, because it's very
difficult to treat yourself whenyou're laboring.
So it's good to have thatperson there to help you.
But just know that it canchange right, because the

(04:22):
beginning stages can be verydifferent than the end stages of
labor.
So just because you've triedone remedy, you might need
another one as you get closer todelivery.

Dr Bola Sogade (04:32):
So you had both home births right.

Dr Jessica Patella (04:35):
Well, we ended up in the hospital, but
our hospital has a beautifulmother-baby and labor and
delivery and you can labor inthe tub at our hospital, which
is really nice.
I was able to do that for oursecond one and oh my gosh what a
difference that makes, becauseI know that you do that at your
center, which is oh my goodness.

Dr Bola Sogade (04:57):
Yeah, we may talk about that next yeah.

Dr Jessica Patella (05:00):
Yes, yeah, we will.
Okay, so in labor.
So I'm going to go over some ofthose labor remedies.
The first one that I have toshare with you is Aconite
A-C-O-N-I-T-E, and this is formore like very intense
contractions.
It tends to come along with alot of fear or anxiety from the

(05:20):
mother.
This one you might have to havea naturopathic doctor as far as
getting this remedy.
I'm not sure that they alwayshave this one over the counter,
but that's kind of in that moreintense stages of labor.
Another one is Belladonna.
So this is another one, right?
So this is a nightshade.
This is the homeopathic, notthe botanical, so very, very

(05:45):
different, just to clarify that.
So this is also very intenselabor pain.
A lot of times there's a lot ofheat in the face, or that
mother might just have like onecheek that's red and the other
isn't, so sometimes you can seethat occur with belladonna, but
the hands and feet tend to bevery cold, so it's like all this
heat is concentrated in theface, with this like very

(06:09):
intense labor pain.
So that would indicatebelladonna for you to give to
that mother.
The next remedy is chamomile.
So this also is coming from aplant, the chamomile plant,
right.
So most of us are familiar withthat as a tea to take chamomile
tea before bed or something tohelp kind of relax.

(06:31):
So that's when you're actuallytaking the parts of that flower,
you're drying them and you'retaking it as a tea For the
homeopathic.
That's again it's been succusedand it's put onto those little
pellets, so it's a completelydifferent preparation for that
chamomile plant.
So chamomile is hypersensitiveto pain in the point that when

(06:54):
you're observing that mothersometimes it's like okay, like
goodness, you know, I'm not surewhether you know, we know that
this can be painful, but we'renot, we're not at that stage yet
, right and so, but there's justthis oversensitivity to
everything.
It could even just be beingtouched to put in an IV and
they're like screaming in pain.
So everything is kind of again, they're oversensitive to

(07:18):
everything that's happeningduring that stage, even in those
very early stages of labor, andthey also can be extremely
irritable when you are with them.
Another remedy iscarbo-vegetalibus.
For carbo-veg this mother tendsto feel very weak in pregnancy,

(07:38):
very tired.
So I think of like when I havea lot of times I come up with
kind of pictures almost to helpme remember these remedies.
So to me I think of, like themother that this is, you know,
fourth, fifth, sixth child.
They've had many children, they're all at home.
She's you know, know, she'sjust tired from her body.

(07:59):
Having multiple pregnancies andhaving to keep up with a lot of
little ones um takes a lot ofenergy.
So this could be like thisstate of like, so weak that
you're not seeing the laborprogress, and it's almost like
her constitution isn't strongenough to get to those stages
because she's so tired.
So that wouldn't it in thatkind of picture.

(08:19):
It would make me think ofCarboVeg for that mother.
Another one is Gelsamium.
Gelsamium also tends to be verytired, but the sensation that
comes along with that remedy isvery different.
So in Gelsamium they tend tofeel very heavy, almost as if
they can't even move their body, they can't support their weight

(08:42):
.
This can also be labor thatstops progressing, right.
We know that sometimes you seethis progression and all of a
sudden it just stops right, there's no more.
You know the cervix didn'tdilate completely.
We're no longer havingcontractions at regular
intervals, so it kind of juststops or it's slowing down.
So sometimes that would makeyou think of the homeopathic

(09:06):
remedy Gelsamium as well, tohelp that mother kind of get
back into those stages of havingthat labor progress.

Dr Bola Sogade (09:16):
Thank you, Thank you so much.
So were you describing thestates of the mothers and the
state that that mother ispresenting right?

Dr Jessica Patella (09:42):
Because labor can present in so many
ways.
So you're trying to find theremedy that matches that state
to help her through that.
Whether that to be toessentially make it so there's
less they can have.
Help with pain.
They can help with making thelabor come back to progression,
so it's progressing again.
Help with that.
The labor come back toprogression, so it's progressing
again.
Help with that oversensitivityto pain, depending what that

(10:04):
remedy is.
So you're just trying to findthe remedy that matches the
state that that mother iscurrently in to help her move
through that, you know, moreefficiently and hopefully more
comfortably as well.

Dr Bola Sogade (10:18):
Thank you.
Okay, so we did mentionhydrotherapy, and at our birth
center in Forsyth we use a lotof hydrotherapy, massage and
other hands-on techniques, youknow using trigger points and
acupressure for pain managementin labor.
I believe you call thisphysical medicine.

(10:39):
So how do you, as anaturopathic doctor, use these
physical modalities to promotehealing and to help during labor
?

Dr Jessica Patella (10:50):
Yes, I just love that you have the birthing
tub right, so it just helps, because then the muscles, like
that mother, is fully supportedright by that water.
There's the ability for thosemuscles to completely relax
because they're working inmassage and things.
That's just beautiful.
I think what you're offeringmakes that birthing process so

(11:20):
much, so much more.
You know, this picture of ofbeauty and support that you're
giving to these women is reallywonderful.
So it's naturopathic doctorsthat there's many that also
become midwives and supportwomen in the birthing process,
and a lot of them will do thesame things that you are doing.

(11:40):
As far as hydrotherapy, one ofthe biggest things for
naturopathic doctors withhydrotherapy this we use more
for kids, but I use it as anadult is what we call wet sock
treatment.
I use it as an adult is what wecall wet sock treatment, and so

(12:01):
wet sock treatment is where, when somebody has a fever
obviously there's so many youhave to know the threshold of
what you're comfortable with, with how high you would let a
fever get.
But there's benefits, right, our body is innately wise and it
has all these things there toprotect us.
So when you get a fever, ithelps to fight off that
infection right.
It makes your body release moreof your white blood cells.
It makes it so that way, the,you know, the bacteria virus

(12:24):
cannot survive as well in yourbody by raising that temperature
.
So in naturopathic medicine wetry not to stop that process
right, because it does help ithelps in healing so.
But one of the things that we doif it's starting to get to that
point we're like it's getting alittle bit high for what
somebody is comfortable with isto use wet socks.

(12:44):
So you take a thin pair ofsocks and you get them wet with
really really cold water.
So here in the South we have toadd some ice cubes to it
usually because we don't getvery cold here and then you
wring out those socks reallyreally well.
So they're cold and wet butthey're not dripping wet.
You wring them out really welland then you put those socks on

(13:07):
and then put either a pair ofwool socks or just a pair of
thicker socks over it and kindof go to bed and you will be
amazed at your body will.
That heat essentially will dryout those socks and that fever
will come down.
So that's, I feel like that'sthe major naturopathic use of
hydrotherapy kind of across theboard.

(13:28):
Now of course there's doctorsthat specialize in that and
their whole practice is justconstitutional hydrotherapy of
different kind of hot and coldapplications to the body,
usually with some electricalstimulation on the liver and
gallbladder.
But that's a wet socks.
I feel like any almost anynaturopathic doctor, if not all

(13:48):
will know that treatment.

Dr Bola Sogade (13:51):
Thank you, thank you for that.
So you've given us some thingsfor labor and do you have more?
And is there anything for afterthe baby comes?

Dr Jessica Patella (14:00):
you know, because you know women still
need support, you know, duringthose times are especially
helpful for back labor, becauseI feel like that's so hard when

(14:20):
that mother gets a lot of painin the back as she's laboring.
So KALI, which is K-A-L-Icarbonicum, c-a-r-b-o-n-i-c-u-m
this is one of the main remediesfor back labor and back pain
while laboring.
So this can just be reallyhelpful to support a mom if she
has that while she's laboring.
Also, I just wanted to sharewith you as far as after and

(14:45):
whether there is a tear or anepisiotomy, there can be some
support with using homeopathicremedies.
So, as far as if you had to doeither if you had to rush to the
hospital and do a cesarean, orif that was planned, or if you
had to do an episiotomy, so ifyou had to make a cut, those are

(15:07):
all clean cuts, right.
Those are surgical cuts thathave been planned and so they're
essentially clean, so those can.
Staphysagria, the homeopathicremedy Staphysagria can be
helpful for any type of medicalcut that's been made.
And then the sutures that canbe applied afterwards, so that

(15:29):
homeopathic remedy Staphysaguscan help with the healing from a
cutting wound.
Now, if the mother happens totear while laboring, bellus
perineus is a remedy that isvery helpful for that.
So now we're looking at a tear,so that's not a clean cut right
Like that's just torn.

(15:49):
So two different remedies, homeopathic remedies that can
help with that, and then, acrossthe board, I feel, like most
people, the one remedy thatalmost everybody knows as far as
homeopathy goes is Arnica.
So Arnica is used a lot forbruising, swelling.

(16:10):
So you can go to, you know, your Walgreens, your CVS,
whichever that's kind of onevery corner, and you can find
homeopathic Arnica cream forsure.
And then everything I'm talkingabout today is to take in the
pellet form.
But that's one that can be usedbecause there can be a lot of
swelling or even bruising thatoccurs from delivery, and so

(16:34):
Arnica is a good one to kind ofhelp women across the board with
healing after they've givenbirth.
So that would be one that wouldbe helpful, kind of almost for
anybody afterwards.

Dr Bola Sogade (16:48):
Yeah, yeah, thank you so much for that.
Thank you so much.
Now we want to move to.
We want to look atevidence-based practices and
some latest research innaturopathic medicine, topics
for more discussion in ourupcoming episode.
Does the naturopathic doctorintegrate evidence-based

(17:11):
practices into their treatments?

Dr Jessica Patella (17:13):
I'm just curious evidence-based practices
into their treatments.
I'm just curious.
Yes, absolutely, and I'm soglad you brought this up,
because I think there just needsto be so much more knowledge
around this topic.
And so, as naturopathic doctors, we're trained not only to
reach out to our medicalcolleagues, so reaching out to
the medical doctor, so that waywe can work together.

(17:35):
I think the best patientmedicine comes when you have
somebody that's well-educated inthe natural and holistic sense,
that also can work with themedical doctor, and it can
almost become a team for thatpatient.
So, you know, I feel like thatis a great resource.
