Season Two Episode Nine

Loving the Dying with Jennifer Bedford

Jennifer reads a beautiful piece about her dog’s death, her mom’s death,  and a paramedic who showed up at the scene of the car accident where her beloved dog, Leo, died a week after her mom died. She shares her experiences of being with the dying and how she’s learned to embrace death, to see the beauty. She also gives practical tips to help survivors, to take much of the guessing out of what to do after someone dies, including a letter she’s written to her kids: “You’re going to be okay. I’m so sorry Mama’s gone. . . .”

Jennifer Bedford lives in South Pasadena California; she began writing as a young girl with multiple pen-pals, an unlimited supply of stamps, and far too many felt-markers to count. She kept the pen-pal racquet going for decades until her family onboarded that first Macintosh computer that looked like a beige UPS box with a grip handle on its backside. What a thrill it was to discover the font dropdown menu and continue writing to, with, and about her friends and family with joyous abandon. Jennifer is a student and practitioner of the Brave Writing style and is currently belaboring a memoir under the tutelage of memoirist Erika Schickel.
