Speaker 1 (00:00):
Where do we begin when we want to test something?
So let's say, for example, I'vealways been doing this one
thing, forever.
Maybe I only do static postsand I do it two times a week on
Instagram.
So where could I take this if Iwant to test things out?

Speaker 2 (00:15):
It's Coffee Social, the podcast, all about social
media and business.
And now here are your hosts,Jonathan Howard and Mimi Langley
.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hi everyone, hi Jonathan Howard.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Hello Mimi Langley.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
You're dancing over there.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Well, our opening is dance-worthy, Isn't it?
It is.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Oh my gosh.
Cheers everyone.
It's a new episode.
Cheers, jonathan.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Cheers Mimi Langley.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Langley, okay, let me sip, and then I'll show you my
mug.
And it's not Taylor anymore, no, but so shout out to Michelle,
the grief curator.
She got me this.
It goes in my podcast era.
And then on the back it says Ilove it, it's's so cute, I know
In your podcast era.

(01:05):
I guess I'm in a lot of erasright now.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Don't think we have time, at the beginning of this
micro episode, to talk aboutyour era.
No, we don't.
We have to dive into it becausewe have to keep this short,
it's not a three and a half hourepisode.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
We have to keep this under 10 minutes.
Yes, you guys time us.
Okay, jonathan, today we'regoing to talk about how to
actually test your content onsocial media, and we throw
around that word a lot testing.
So where do you want to startwith this?
Because it's important to test.
Why is it important to test outdifferent things?

Speaker 2 (01:39):
So great question.
And the reason it's importantto test out different things is
because social media is alwayschanging and you're always going
to have content that performsbetter than other content.
So if you're paying attentionto what content is performing
well and then you're putting insome content into a rotation,
that's test content.
It may end up doing better thansome of your regular content

(02:01):
and can replace that content andhelp you get more reach, more
followers, more whatever it isthat you're looking for.
So you have to really payattention to what you're putting
out there and test and by testI mean you've got to look at the
numbers.
So you know, actually lookingat the numbers, mimi.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
I know, we all know, that Mimi does not like data.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
That's.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Jonathan's area.
Okay, okay, so let's just backup for a second and then we'll
get into more of the detailsabout how to test.
But, like, where do we beginwhen we want to test something?
So let's say, for example, I'vealways been doing this one
thing forever.
Like, maybe I only do staticposts and I do it, you know, two
times a week on Instagram.
So, like, where could I takethis if I want to test things

(02:45):
out?

Speaker 2 (02:46):
So when you're testing, the first thing you
want to make sure is that youdon't take everything and put it
into the test.
So I always say 70% of yourcontent should be your standards
that do really well.
30% should be test content.
So don't just go.
I'm going to start doing reelsand replace all your stagnant
posts with reels, because youmight potentially lose your
entire audience.

(03:06):
Because what if your audiencedoesn't like reels or doesn't
like you on reels?
Oh my gosh, or it might justconfuse people so much they're
like where's her content that weloved?
Because they might have lovedyour stagnant posts.
So you don't want to likeconfuse people, you don't want
to give them whiplash.
So I would if you're doing twoposts a week, I would insert one

(03:34):
reel every two weeks and testthat for three to five months.
Now, if it starts to do reallywell, all like right away.
It starts to do really well, starts to pick up momentum, and
you're like wow, I'm getting alot of views on this, don't go
all reels.
Test it with two, one each weekand see how that does.
But I wouldn't go much morethan that when you're testing it

(03:55):
.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Okay, I wasn't expecting you to say that.
I thought that you would wantme to just add the reel in and
do it every week along with mytwo other posts.
So I kind of I mean, maybe youwould, but I also preferable,
but I know you, so we have to berealistic.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
We have to be realistic and we have to, and we
have to base it on what yourconsistency can be.
So if your consistency can onlybe two posts a week, then those
two posts a week, one of themwill be a reel, one of them
won't.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Okay.
Okay, so every other week itwould be one static post.
This is just an example, youguys.
One static post, one reel, justto kind of test it out, but
also have my main one thatpeople are so used to.
Anyways, I like it, okay.
So you were talking aboutsomething about keeping it going
for five.
How many months?
Three to five months, that'show long.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
I should be testing something.
You should be testing somethingIn order to know if it's really
working for you.
You've got to give it a lot ofrotations Now.
The reason I said with youthree to five months is because
you're putting out one reelevery other week.
So you're not going to be ableto tell really and have enough
data points to know if it'sworking for you.

(05:09):
Because when you start doingreels, you're not going to be
great at reels.
It takes practice.
So your first reels may not dothat well other than the first
one.
If you've never done a reelbefore, your first reels may not
do that well.
So instead of saying, oh, thesereels suck and your first only
did five reels and I'm nevergoing to do that again, you know

(05:30):
that's not really the bestpractice and that's not really
the best test, because thosefive reels could be your worst
reels you're ever going tocreate.
But, those five reels could take10 weeks to put out.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
So you need to do it over a longer amount of time.
Okay, what if I'm creatingreels, like I'm so used to
creating reels and I just wantto change up a little bit of my
style?
How would you test somethinglike that?

Speaker 2 (05:56):
By changing up a little bit of your style.
Now, again, like I said, youdon't want to change it all.
So if your style is working andit's something that's working,
mix in a little bit of something.
Maybe it's the beginning, maybeit's the end, maybe it's just a
little bit of differentcoloring or a different filter.
Try it on a couple of the reels, but don't go all in on it.

(06:18):
I really, unless it's a trendthat's coming and going and it
needs and it's appropriate foryour niche and you want to do it
right away, like fine, then dothat.
But that's a one and done sortof thing.
If you're really looking forcontent that you're going to be
putting out there and is goingto be appropriate for your brand
and stuff like that, test it.
Don't just go all in onsomething.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah, and I think the point of us creating this
episode really is to encourageyou to not just base off your
results on trying out once right, like Jonathan's talking about,
like a month's period, like oftime of testing something.
You just don't beat yourself upif you're not seeing quite the
results you were expecting inthe first or second change that

(07:03):
you're making.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Right, right.
And so the other thing is like, say you're posting seven days a
week and you want to change outsome of your content.
You can change out two posts inthat week and still be putting
out five pieces of content thatare going to work and two that
you're unsure of, and they mighttake off.
And if they take off andconsistently every week, they're

(07:25):
doing great.
Then at the end of that monthyou might be able to say, okay,
I've put in two, four, six, eight.
They're all like going crazy.
I know that one of those twoposts can be this type of post
and then maybe test something bethis type of post.
And then maybe test somethingelse with the other post.
And then, last but not least, you got to look at your insights
and you got to make sure thatyou're not just looking at views

(07:47):
, because views doesn'tnecessarily mean it's doing well
for you.
So if you want more websiteclicks, you need to look at, you
know, the clicks on yourwebsite, how many people went to
your website or how many peoplesigned up for your program.
That is very different than howmany people saw your content,
how many impressions you got.
So making sure that you'relooking at the right one.

(08:09):
I will send Mimi to include inthe show notes a link to the
chart that describes what eachanalytic actually helps you
measure.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Oh, my gosh, I don't have that chart.
Yes, you do.
I do.
It's in the membership, ofcourse it is.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Oh, I need it.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
I need it.
Okay, we'll put that below, like Jonathan said.
Last thing, you know, becausewe can have a whole episode
dedicated to your analytics, which we kind of already dove
into in one of our contentplanning episodes that we did um
, but you know it's like don'tyou don't just have to test only
on one platform social mediaplatform.

(08:49):
So we're like talking instagram, but you know, maybe what you
just created is not reallyworking well for your instagram
family.
It's like maybe it will workway better on LinkedIn or
something like that.
So what do you say abouttesting on multiple platforms?

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Yeah, if it doesn't work on a platform, test it on
another platform.
If you think that your audienceon one platform is just not
digging it and you've alreadycreated the content, put it out
on the other platform.
See if it does well.
Tiktok and Instagram arecompletely different.
Sometimes Something that goesgangbusters on TikTok may not do
well on Instagram.
So if you've got it onInstagram and you've already

(09:25):
created it, try it on TikTok.
Why not Try it on LinkedIn?
Why not?
What do you got to lose Now ifthat same content and it's a
whole bunch of different thingsthat you've got and it still it
doesn't do well on LinkedIneither?
Maybe you should try some ofthe newer stuff on LinkedIn or
the newer stuff on TikTok, butthat's again paying attention to

(09:46):
your numbers and seeing what'sworking and what's not.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
Okay, so test more than once Yep and pay attention
to your numbers.
Yep and not just views.
People.
We're going deeper than that,Unless, of course, your main
goal is just views.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Well, and if your goal is to get more visibility
for your brand, then sure views,it is Impressions, whichever
one you want to go by, becausethat's going to get more eyes on
your brand.
Okay, well, Jonathan, that's it.
Buddy, I know we hit 10 minutes.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
I know and I feel like we could literally talk
about this all day.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
I know, but you know we got to do this quick episode.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Who told us about micro episodes?
I'm going to yell at them.
I know it was me.
