During our latest “Coffee With” episode, Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting Professor Dejan Đokić, a historian and an author. Dejan has been teaching comparative European History at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth since 2003. Before that Dejan was a professor of modern and contemporary history at Goldsmiths, University of London where, in 2009, he founded and was the first director of the Centre for the Study of the Balkans.
We discussed Dejan’s book “A Concise History of Serbia” – the first single volume history of Serbia and Serbs from the Middle Ages to the present day in any language. We explored what and where is Serbia, how has the perception of the country changed, in particular in the last 50 or so years, and whether it is possible to distinguish the history of Serbia from the history of the Serbian people.
We further reflected on the student protests in Serbia, the inaction of the EU when it comes to recent events in Serbia, the role and impact of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and what is the future for Serbia.
We will air the full episode on Saturday at 7am UK and 8am Serbian time on our Youtube and website, and all other leading streaming services.

Cardiac Cowboys
The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
