Originally intended as a direct-to-video adaptation of an unfinished manga series, the producers of Fudoh were so impressed by the film that they insisted it premiere in theaters in 1996, and it's easy to see why with Miike's penchant for Yakuza stories, as well as his talent for cinematography and adapting wacky, edgy plots so far out they could only come from a manga.
