Rachel (00:01):
So you mind telling me why you're so familiar with
biblical quotes?

Nick (00:05):
It's always a good idea to know what the other side is up
to. Right.

Rachel (00:09):
Hi. I'm Rachel. And I'm Matt. And this is Come in 81
kilo. You got one job.

Matt (00:22):
An f k thing.

Rachel (00:25):
Hi. I'm Rachel. And I'm Matt. And this is Come in, 81
kilo.

Matt (00:29):
A forever night podcast.

Rachel (01:22):
Welcome back, friends. It made sense. Matt got
possessed for a minute there.

Matt (01:30):
Yeah. This is gonna be a short one. Rachel's very
preoccupied with Children ofDune, especially since children
of Dune has a character thatgets possessed. This episode of
forever night has a characterthat gets possessed.

Rachel (01:43):
Good point. Good point. Yes. We are covering Children of
Dune on Strange and BeautifulBook Club. And, like, 2 seconds
for just a PSA, if you didn'tknow, we have an Instagram.
It's strange and beautifulnetwork. We also have a website.
Instagram. It's strange andbeautiful network. We also have
a website,strangeandbeautiful.club, if you
need to find the links toanything.
And we have a recommendationform on that. I haven't got

(02:05):
anything in a while. So, like, somebody boogie over there and
give us some recommendations. Ittakes us a while to get to them,
especially if their books arelogbooks, but they go in the
queue. I do check them all.
I write them all down. Pleasefeel free to find us there.
Also, we have a Patreon, andI've started putting up regular
blog posts about my, like, scifi adventure. So I'm doing a

(02:26):
year in sci fi where I'mreading, sort of almost
chronologically in order, sortof chronologically in order,
kind of whatever I get from thelibrary. But, chronologically in
order from, like, classic sci fito pulp sci fi to new age sci fi
to cyberpunk and on throughthat.
So if you wanna keep us up withwhat I'm reading and the blog

(02:49):
post that I'm posting aboutthat, you can find us on
Patreon. It is free.

Matt (02:54):
These posts are free.

Rachel (02:55):
These posts are free. We do other things for Patreon that
are not free. Mainly chat withpeople on the discord. But if
there were more people, like, nudge, nudge, I would definitely
make more content for Patreon. So I just wanna we don't ever
talk about it.
We used to say it in everypodcast, but now I'm like, and
it was when we had, like, 40followers on Instagram. I'd be

(03:17):
like, we got 50 followers. Oh,we're up to, like, 600 now.
We're stuck at 600. I don'tknow.
I don't I don't have anyfeelings about that, but I would
love to, you know, we'd love togrow. Of course we would,
because building a community ispart of what I wanted to do. And
the more people that become partof the community, the more
people can find each other, themore you can find your little

(03:37):
weird nerd friends, or I canfind little weird nerd friends.
However that works out.

Matt (03:44):
That's the goal.

Rachel (03:44):
That's the goal. So this episode is forever knight season
3 episode 11, sons of Belial. Icouldn't say it. Let's try it.
Hang on.
Hang on. Sons of Belial.

Nick (03:58):
I am the son

Matt (03:59):
of Billy alone. Can you do,

Rachel (04:00):
like, a growl voice? Like, a low, like, real low
voice?

Nick (04:05):
Like, real low.

Rachel (04:06):
Yeah. Can you do that? Say sounds spilly. I'll suck.
Dig deep.
Real deep.

Nick (04:19):
I am the son of Belial.

Rachel (04:22):
Thank you. Thank you. I like to think that, Garrett did
all of his voice acting forthis, and they didn't use any
kind of voice modulation. Thenhe literally was just like,
okay. No.
I can do a demon voice. It'sfine. Yeah. Oh, no. I I can
motorboat that lady's tits.
You want me to do that? Not aproblem. I am here for you.
Whatever you need, I am here foryou.

Matt (04:43):
This was the Geir improv episode, and everybody else just
had to improv along with him.

Rachel (04:49):
They unleashed him on that woman is what they did.
They were like, we need you toact like you are a man
possessed. And he was like, Igot you fam.

Matt (05:00):
Gare, do your thing.

Rachel (05:02):
Do your they didn't even no no instructions. Nothing.
They were just like, woman, areyou okay with this? And she
looked at Gare and was like, Iam perfectly okay with this, and
then they just went at it. Thisepisode.
You know what? I don't watchthis episode very often for
several reasons. I think we'vementioned I grew up extremely

(05:24):
religious, and so this episodewas really unsettling when I
first watched it. And now thesecondhand embarrassment of the
end when he's on the table, andhe's, like, writhing around. And
they're doing the, like, cameraright in front of his face, but
it's that weird, like, 0.51, youknow, like a like a fish lens
almost right on his face, andit's just like, I can't.

Matt (05:45):
Yeah. That that seemed rough.

Rachel (05:47):
But we open on, like, a street busker performance. These
people are out. Is it even that?It feels like bigger than that
because they're playing drums, and then the guy's, like,
climbing up the pole and playingon the cross.

Matt (06:02):
Oh, yeah. This is a whole band.

Rachel (06:03):
This is like a thing.

Matt (06:05):
This feels like live music at, like, as an event on the
street or
Flash mob.

Rachel (06:11):
Was it the Flash mob?

Matt (06:12):
Music for, like, a restaurant or something? Because
there's, like, 6 or 8 people.

Rachel (06:18):
It's a whole ass drum set. There's a guy with
drumsticks just drumming oneverything. There's glitter on
the drum head. There's a lotgoing on. And in the meantime,
there's a police officer walkingby kind of like on a beat, and
he sees a woman asleep slashmaybe dead in her car.

Matt (06:36):
Parked in an alley.

Rachel (06:37):
Parked in an alley. Of course. So he walks up, and he's
like, ma'am, UK, and he checkson her. And then she wakes up
and starts screaming at him inanother language, which, of
course, is Latin because Latinis the official language of
hell. And she's driving a DodgeAres.
He mentions that he's like, it'sa Dodge Ares, and and I was

(06:58):
like, well, I don't evenrecognize that symbol because
it's like a pentagon. Did thatused to be the Dodge symbol? Is
that still the Dodge symbol? AllI know is Dodge Ram, like the
Ram trucks, because we live inthe south, and I everybody
drives trucks. In fact, we own atruck.

Matt (07:15):
A big gas truck.

Rachel (07:16):
A big gas truck, which I offset by also owning a Prius.
So it's perfectly fine.

Matt (07:21):
We we balance out to an s

Rachel (07:23):
We do. We we balance out to an SUV. Yeah. We we roughly
equal the, emissions of an SUV,and she ends up waking up and
driving over this officer. Like, hitting him, he goes up on the
hood, and then when she turns,he flies off, and he's like, no.
But, of course, he's alreadycalled for backup, so it's okay.

(07:43):
Somebody comes to

Matt (07:44):
help him. With the license plate of the car, so she's not
gonna escape this, or will she?

Rachel (07:50):
Or will she? Because she's driving off, and she's
like sobbing, and the drums areplaying in the background. I
thought

Matt (07:56):
she was screaming, I hate that woman.

Rachel (07:59):
Could be.

Matt (08:00):
But I don't know if that was correct.

Rachel (08:02):
I think she's supposed to be screaming in Latin, but
you know what? If you hearddifferent things, that really
fits with the aesthetic of thisepisode, so it's perfectly fine.

Matt (08:11):
Maybe I was just more sensitive to the demonic
energies. Yeah. Like, Gare.

Rachel (08:15):
Like Gare.

Matt (08:16):
Because I'm internally

Rachel (08:17):
Are you internally conflicted? Completely. Do do
you have a chink in which thedevil can wend his way in
because you aren't sure of whoyou are?

Matt (08:25):
Well, all of us contain God and the devil. Well, we
learned that in this episode.Like, a 100 times.

Rachel (08:32):
Like a bunch. Like, I'm pretty sure that's legit. Like,
I they took that from somewhere.Like, I've that's become part of
me now.

Matt (08:39):
The scriptwriter really, really liked that metaphor.

Rachel (08:42):
Like the flashback in this episode. I always like the
ones where I like the flashback, but the main story is just like,
what the fuck is happening? It'skinda how I feel here. And
there's definitely moments thatI like in this episode. It's
really just that end piece wherehe's on the table where if you
have any amount of secondhandembarrassment, you're like, he

(09:03):
had to do that in front of,like, all of the other actors,
all of the set people, thecamera, everybody.
He had to be like which Isuppose you sign up for when
you're an actor. You're gonna doridiculous things in front of
people. And, honestly, he wasprobably more embarrassed doing
that than he was, like, faceattacking that woman in the In

(09:26):
the in the raven. Yeah. Yeah.
Well

Matt (09:29):
Oh, I don't think we saw beefcake beefcake booty shorts.

Rachel (09:34):
We weren't there long enough.

Matt (09:35):
Yeah.

Rachel (09:35):
Yeah. You are correct, sir. There is no beefcake booty
short in the Raven this time. Infact, we just paused the episode
and checked.

Matt (09:45):
Because that's what we do.

Rachel (09:48):
This is the level of dedication we bring to this
podcast. Okay? And I think thatour fans expect it, so we can't
deliver any less. I can't sayhe's not in this, and then
someone comments is like, yeah.He is, and sends me a
screenshot.
That would be embarrassing.

Matt (10:05):
Embarrassing. Yeah.

Rachel (10:06):
Yeah. So the cool part about this opening, I think, is
that we're using the drummingand her driving. Like, the
drumming is amping up. The guy'sclimbing up the pole. He's
banging on more stuff.

Matt (10:17):
He's getting more frantic. Is like an analog for her
emotional state.

Rachel (10:21):
Yeah. Because it's ramping up higher and higher and
higher. And finally, she drivesthrough some construction, ends
up driving off this bridge, taking a header into the road
below. The car explodes.

Matt (10:31):
And there's a big drum crash.

Rachel (10:33):
Well, there's a vague Right

Matt (10:34):
at the explosion.

Rachel (10:35):
And then there's vague Gregorian chanting. Like, I've
sung in, like, the last 4episodes we do. I feel like it
maybe need to be a thing now ornot. Weigh in. Do you like me
singing these or not?
Actually, I don't care aboutdoing what I want anyway. So
then we go to the intro. We goto the intro. That's it.

Matt (10:56):
But up.

Rachel (10:56):
That's the opening. But up. Yep. And then, we come back
to Reese looking confused, whichfeels in character. It just
Totally in character.
Yeah. I feel like Reese doesn'tget why bad guys do what they do
is in every single episodething.

Matt (11:11):
That's his driving motivation for his entire career
as a police officer is to justbe dumbfounded at why why people
would do illegal things.

Rachel (11:22):
Maybe it's his metric. Maybe he thinks if I ever
understand it, that's the day Iquit.

Matt (11:28):
So he's just always testing the waters. Yeah. I had
a realization during thisepisode that Tracy is always
putting out little feelers tosee how safe is this environment
to speculate about supernaturalthings. And that's pretty

(11:48):
consistent.

Rachel (11:50):
She's always trying to figure out how much she can talk
about what she knows.

Nick (11:54):
Right.

Rachel (11:55):
Because she and Nick haven't known each other that
long.

Matt (11:58):
Right. Nick will always just boom. I know something
about that in this, like, supernatural context.

Rachel (12:05):
The world like a mediocre white man. There is no
situation where he feelsuncomfortable, where he feels
like he he can't be himself. Henever feels the need to people
please. He just slides throughthe water like a mediocre white
man does, but a woman is alwaystesting what who she can be in
any situation. How much can Italk about the things that

(12:28):
interest me, and how much willthat make you think I'm weird?
And then all of a sudden, I'm inthis odd little category where,
like, you won't talk to me, andI can't get that back. So, I
mean, I get it. I get weird. Ido the same thing. I am a
relatively odd person.
I wouldn't say I'm odd. I'm justme, I guess. And, like, I went

(12:51):
to the craft store the otherday, and I had on my Morticia
Adams and Gomez Adams t shirt,And then I had on, like, a, I
had a sweater on that had skullson it. And then I have quite
short hair and I dyed it red.And without really intending to,
just having grabbed a few thingsand throwing them on to go to
the craft store, I looked, fairly edgy, one would say, and

(13:16):
I struggled to get served in thecraft store.
And it's not like it's just thata woman is always having to be
aware of what signals she'ssending.

Matt (13:29):
I have to do that a little bit too because of my niche
interests

Rachel (13:35):
contrasting. You were a mediocre white man.

Matt (13:38):
No. But well, for example, I went to go get the oil changed
Yes. In the truck the other day.Mhmm. And I know where I live,
so I put on my good old boyoutfit Yeah.
Which is like, blue jeans thatare slightly dirty and worn in

(14:04):
and a just bland hoodie and myleather boots and a baseball
cap.

Rachel (14:11):
Yeah.

Matt (14:13):
And I walked in, and it was full of good old boys. And I
did a little bit too good of ajob, like passing the vibe
checks. Gotcha. And so I thinkin the future, I need to tone it
down, like, either, or, like, posture wise or the way I'm

(14:40):
phrasing things when I'mgreeting. I I think I need to
tone down my greetings a littlebit because I don't wanna get
people's attention too much.
Right. But, yeah, I put on thispersona.

Rachel (14:53):
I think what the takeaway here is everyone is
always a little bit aware ofYeah. What they're presenting.
And Tracy just learned somethingreally big. Except for Nick.
Nick

Matt (15:04):
Nick has, Nick has a very severe threshold of, are my eyes
glowing and are my fangs out?Yeah. And if those two questions
are no He's doing great.

Rachel (15:17):
Well, I mean, one might argue that Nicholas Knight is in
itself a persona.

Matt (15:22):
Absolutely. It is. Yeah. But it's it's Nicolas de
Bourbon, the vampire without hisglowy eyes or fangs.

Rachel (15:33):
Well, he's cosplaying as knickknack at all times. Right?
That's why he's like, Vests?Hell, yeah. Vests.
And then vest didn't seem to bedoing it anymore, so now he's
moved on to, like, black buttonup shirts and sometimes jeans,
which we all thank you for thisdecision, honestly. But, I mean,
one could argue that the reasonhe moves through the world in

(15:56):
the way he does might be becausehe is incredibly fluent in who
he needs to be in everysituation.

Matt (16:03):
Yeah.

Rachel (16:04):
So he may not need the it it may be instantaneous. He
can take the measure of the roomand figure out who he needs

Matt (16:10):
to be. Then we'll have a situation like this episode
where Natalie will say, oh,there was lamb's blood. I don't
I'm not sure how she identifiedlamb's blood versus other
generic mammal blood.

Rachel (16:27):
Maybe Nick told her. That's lamb.

Matt (16:29):
But Nick was like, oh, yeah. Lamb's blood. Yeah. They
used that in exorcisms back inthe middle ages.

Rachel (16:38):
He's got approximate knowledge of a lot of things.
Okay? That that is part ofcosplaying as Nick Knight, so
it's fine. He can do that.

Matt (16:46):
Well, I feel like that's a little bit him, like, failing in
the failing to maintain hiscover.

Rachel (16:56):
Well, Tracy calls him on it. Tracy calls him on it almost
immediately. She goes, how comeyou know so much about this
stuff? And he goes, I alwayslike to keep up with what the
other side is up to.

Matt (17:08):
I feel Tracy calls him out on it like Skanky never did. And
so with Skanky, Skanky wasalways just like, oh, yeah. You
must be one of those nerds

Rachel (17:21):
who just

Matt (17:22):
know random things.

Rachel (17:23):
This is where our fan canon really, really works.

Matt (17:27):
Okay.

Rachel (17:27):
The fact that we believe that Skanky knew what he was.

Matt (17:30):
That Skanky was aware.

Rachel (17:31):
And so Skanky was fully aware of what he was, and that's
why he didn't ask. That's whythat fan canon works.

Matt (17:39):
Yeah.

Rachel (17:39):
It's fan canon. I know it is. I know it's not real
canon that we don't have any wayof knowing whether or not Skanky
actually knew or not, but itmakes the skanky character
better if he knew, and he wasjust like, I'm hands off on
this. Right.

Matt (17:55):
It doesn't change anything, but it makes the
perception better.

Rachel (17:59):
Yeah. And so he was deliberately ignorant. He
deliberately did not askclarifying questions because he
didn't want to know the answer.Or like says in this one, of
course, you don't ask becausethen you might get an answer.

Matt (18:13):
Right. Once the question is asked. Yeah. Yeah.

Rachel (18:16):
Okay. So we've derailed, but we're back. Reese remains
confused is what I put in mynotes.

Matt (18:21):
I think us getting derailed is on track.

Rachel (18:25):
You know what? It's on brand.

Matt (18:27):
On brand.

Rachel (18:28):
Yes. So Nick and Tracy are apparently already on a
case, and they just show up. AndReese is like, what about that
other case?

Matt (18:35):
Because they were the ones available.

Rachel (18:37):
Yeah. Well, Nick is like, well, we're waiting on
stuff for that, and we kindathought maybe there was
something more to this. So wedecided we'd show up and take a
look at it, and Reese is like, you make a compelling argument.
And they point out that therewas a car that drove away and
they're because they're herelooking at the injured officer

(18:58):
and they identified the car andit they found it because it got
blowed up, and it contained awoman or the remains of a woman
named Melanie Sawchuk. And Reeseis like, cool.
What what the fuck's up thatwith that? And Nick is like,
well, we gotta wait for anautopsy, so we figured we'd
just, you know, come by and seewhat's going on. And so they're
trying to talk about I think theguy's name is, like, it's, like,

(19:22):
lost something or Mick. I don'tknow. The officer's name is
something really strange.

Matt (19:27):
Oh, the officer there that

Rachel (19:28):
got run over. Yeah. And so Reese is like, oh, I don't
know. He's not talking. We can'tI don't know.

Matt (19:34):
Oh, yeah. Good luck. You're not gonna get much out of
him.

Rachel (19:37):
Yeah. And Nick's like, well, let me take a crack at it.
And so he walks over and she'slike bubble bubble. What did you
see? And he's like, a woman in acar.
And what he goes, oh, she has apulse, and he's like, okay. The
woman in the car. Okay. Alright.Let's keep going.
And he ends up getting from himthat this lady, yelled something

(19:57):
at him, and he's like, okay, well, what did she yell at you?
And he says it, and it's like, hak malignant or something. And
it's like something woman. Ithink I tried to figure it out,
but Google was like, the fuck. Idon't know what you're trying to
figure out.
But it's something about a womanand then, like, something about
bad. So it could be I hate thiswoman.

Matt (20:20):
Yeah. She could have started out saying it in Latin
and then transitioned toEnglish.

Rachel (20:26):
Yeah. And the car. I mean, very well could have been.
And Nick is like, okay. So hesits up and Tracy's like, well,
what was that?
And Nick was like, mom, soundedlike Latin, but who knows? Nick
knows.

Matt (20:39):
Nick knows exactly what it means.

Rachel (20:41):
Yeah. Yeah. He does. And Reese says, you know what? You
guys are here.
This feels convenient. I don'twant you to just run out the
clock. I'm a civic minded dude. Why don't you work on this until
there's some movement on yourcurrent case?

Matt (20:55):
The taxpayers need to get their money's worth out of you.

Rachel (20:58):
Yeah. So why don't you just run with this, see what
happens? I mean, of course, it'san apparent suicide, but you
can't just rule it a suicide. Weneed to figure out what it might
be. And so we go to the morgue, and I wanna point out that for a
show that literally nobody everwrote down the canon on
anything, Natalie always hatesburn victims.

(21:24):
We couldn't be consistent aboutfuck all with Nick, but Natalie,
goddamn it, always hates burnvictims. She's like, ugh.

Matt (21:32):
I put this completely on Kathy.

Rachel (21:35):
Yeah. I was gonna say, that's exactly what I was gonna
say. Catherine was probablylike, doesn't Natalie hate burn
victims? Should I say somethingabout it?

Matt (21:43):
This has happened, like, twice already. This will be the
3rd time.

Rachel (21:45):
What? Please.

Matt (21:48):
Why are we talking about this casually? Natalie's
traumatized. This is triggeringfor

Rachel (21:52):
me. Natalie fucking hates burn victims. Didn't you
hear her heartfelt story toCohen about that summer trip
that she went on where thosepeople got trapped in a car and
they got burned? Didn't you hearthat? I hate burn victims.
And so they come in and she'slike, burn victims. My worst
nightmare. And then she's like, here, wintergreen gel for the
smell to, like, put under yournose. And Nick goes, oh, how are

(22:14):
you doing? And Natalie says,I've gone through 2 jars
already, and this woman is stillin the body bag.
So shit. She's crazy. AndNatalie is like, nah, I haven't
really done her autopsy yet. Shejust got here. She's crispy
critter.
I'm about to open her up and dothe internal. I'm guessing you
guys don't wanna be here forthat. And Nick and Tracy are

(22:36):
both like, that's a negativecaptain. We do not wanna be here
for that. And she's like, okay.
But I got some notes from, like, whatever, the people that send
me notes, and they said that, she has a next of kin, a
brother, and you can go findhim. Here you go. Here's the
clipboard. And they go find thisguy, which he's not at his

(22:58):
house, and he's not at a placeof business. He's Right.

Matt (23:02):
We just

Rachel (23:03):
a sex club.

Matt (23:04):
Whatever path that they took to find him Yeah. It's a
deleted scene.

Rachel (23:11):
It's fine. Because what did they do? Go home and he had
a post it note on his door thatwas like, tonight's my night to
pick at the sex club. You wannafind me, that's where I'll be.

Matt (23:20):
Oh, they went where they went there and his roommate was
there, it's like, oh, yeah. It

Rachel (23:24):
It's 3

Matt (23:25):
nights stay. Yeah. 3 nights a week, he's at the sex
club. That's what the sign says.

Rachel (23:30):
And this is actually an actor from Dark Knight, which I
was like, oh, it's doctor Dave, and Matt goes, I have no
knowledge of what you're talkingabout. I don't know what that
means.

Matt (23:39):
I don't

Rachel (23:39):
know what that means. He's one of the people
experiencing homelessness fromdark night. He's like, the
doctor, the one that they meet

Matt (23:46):
outside the that was kind of enthusiastic about, plasma
donation.

Rachel (23:51):
Yeah. Give a little, get a little. It's our way of giving
back to society. That's thisguy. Yeah.
And he's handing out pamphletsoutside of sex show, sex shop,
intimate sex. Club. Sex club.

Matt (24:04):
That's what the sign says.

Rachel (24:06):
Alright. Well, they come up and talk to him. They're
like, hey. We're policeofficers, and he's like, I'm
allowed to be here. I'm notharassing anybody because he's
not stopping anybody.
He's just handing out pamphlets, and he ends up quoting scripture
at them.

Brother (24:19):
I'm not interfering with any of the patrons of this
establishment, sir. Isaiahchapter 55 verse 7. Let the
wicked forsake his way, and theunrighteous man his thoughts.
For the Lord sayeth, there is nopeace unto the wicked.

Rachel (24:35):
And ends with, there's no peace unto the wicked. And
Nick

Matt (24:39):
just completely normal to me.

Rachel (24:42):
You feel like that? Yeah. This kinda feels like
living in. We live in we'velived in the Bible Belt for too
long. That's why.

Matt (24:50):
Yeah.

Rachel (24:51):
Yeah. There's a there was a local restaurant. This is
a side. I don't know. There wasa local restaurant that had a,
the only words I can think ofare strip club, and that is not
even remotely what it is.
Drag show. There's a restaurantin our town that had a drag
show, and it got picketed. Andthe lady was like, you know
what? The owner of therestaurant was like who was very

(25:11):
civically minded and did a lotof stuff in the town was
basically like, fuck y'all. Soldher restaurant and left.

Matt (25:18):
Wow.

Rachel (25:19):
Because she realized that this wasn't the kind of
place where she wanted to be.Yeah. I respect that. So they
tell him. They're like, youknow, your sister, she dead.
And he's like, oh, cool.Unperturbed. It's like you you
did have a sister. Right? Youare the correct doctor Dave.
That's not his name. It'sDave's. You are the correct man.

(25:40):
Right? And he's like, oh, no.
Yeah. No. I had a sister. That'sI mean, I'm just really, okay.
And they're like, was shesuicidal?
And he goes, as there is Godwithin us all, so there is the
devil. That's number 1. That'sthe first time we met you.

Matt (25:56):
We should have had a counter.

Rachel (25:57):
We should have had a counter. And, he says she was a
woman of sorrows acquainted withgrief. And Nick knows the verse
for that, and he stops and goes, paraphrased. Like, he says the
chapter verse,

Nick (26:12):
and then

Matt (26:12):
he just goes another time where Nick is like, ancient Nick
is leaking out through cop Nick.

Rachel (26:22):
Yeah.

Matt (26:22):
And nobody Well, he can,

Rachel (26:25):
you know, when he was with Skanky, he was accustomed
to being just that little bithimself because Skanky never
asked. And now that he's withTracy, he can be just that
little bit himself because itsort of is like a a joke. Is she
gonna get it, or is she notgonna get it? Yeah. Because she
has all the tools.

(26:46):
Is she gonna put all the piecestogether or not? So it has to be
kind of like he could have goneone way or the other. He could
have really doubled down andtried to never say anything that
could be misconstrued, or hecould do whatever the fuck he
wants and just see what happens. And I think he fell on the I'm a

(27:07):
do what I want and see whathappens. Right.

Matt (27:10):
And I think the the thing that's working against Tracy in
figuring figuring it out is shetrusts Vashawn too much, and
Vashawn has told her that Nickis not a vampire.

Rachel (27:26):
I don't think he ever explicitly said he's not

Matt (27:28):
a vampire.
I don't think he ever explicit, but they both played
along that Vashawn is a vampire.Nick is not. Yeah. They did the
hypnotizing thing. Know aboutvampires.

Rachel (27:40):
Yeah.

Matt (27:42):
And and so Tracy is like, oh, like the whole line of
thought, Nick just saidsomething weird. What else could
be weird about Nick? Let meassemble the facts.

Rachel (27:56):
Well, Nick's just weird.

Matt (27:58):
All of all of that, like, recognizing, like, here's all
these flags. Yeah. There'ssomething weird about Nick.
Anytime she starts going downthat line of thought, it's
immediately short circuited by,oh, but Vashon hypnotized him.
He can't be a vampire.
Be a vampire.

Rachel (28:19):
Yeah. Because she says that episode, she says Nick has
no memory of what happened.Like, he doesn't even he doesn't
know anything about it. AndVashawn's like, oh, is that what
he told you? And then later whenshe's like, Nick never believes
me.
He's such a skeptic.

Matt (28:33):
Vashon does

Rachel (28:34):
And Vashon goes praise

Matt (28:35):
everything very carefully.

Rachel (28:36):
Yeah. He never confirms or denies, which I think is a
good step for the that characterand for the show

Nick (28:46):
Yeah.

Rachel (28:47):
Because he he's never like, oh, no. Nick's not a
vampire. The one thing that hedoes is pretend to hypnotize
him, and I guess maybe that wasenough for Tracy. So we go back
to the morgue because he ends upblowing them off. He's like,
yeah.
Yeah, sister. Very sad. I've gotmy sex pamphlets to hand out.

Matt (29:03):
Oh, on a side note? This is another episode with no
fashion.

Rachel (29:07):
Oh, yeah. Dang. You got hot boy vampire who rode in on a
motorcycle, and we're not evenusing him. Maybe he was off to
another

Matt (29:19):
Speaking of the motorcycle, the motorcycle's
back.

Rachel (29:21):
The wig was at the dry cleaners. In Nick's apartment.
The motorcycle we're not thereyet.

Matt (29:26):
Oh, so how do we

Rachel (29:27):
We gotta gotta go in order. It's our shtick. So they
go back to the more It's

Matt (29:32):
your shtick. I I pull us off the You do. Linear path.

Rachel (29:36):
You do. You're kind of, like, in a video game, you know,
the mine cart level in the videogame when you're in the mine
cart. And every once in a while, you're going around a curve, and
you have to, like, lean thecontroller to keep you from
flying off the curve. I'm thecontroller trying to keep us on,
and you're the the, rocksfalling down trying to knock the
mine cart off the track. I likehow you just nodded in

(29:59):
agreement.
You were like, that's acompletely appropriate metaphor.

Matt (30:02):
Oh, I I was thinking of a much more obscure metaphor, but

Rachel (30:06):
Oh, no. Please enlighten us. I'm here for it. Let's what
is what is it?

Matt (30:10):
Okay. So Yep. In cognitive science, most of the functions
of the brain boil down to, like, opponent processing of 2
different parts of the brainkind of competing. Which one has
a, like, better summary of therelevant facts that are useful
for, like, ac deciding what todo. And the reason you do that

(30:35):
is so that you can actuallyhave, like, a competition, and
I'm being recorded.
I can't I can't gesticulate tomove

Nick (30:48):
the brain.

Rachel (30:48):
I was trying to capture how much you move your hands to
explain why there are certainmic hits. I just can't edit out.
But no. Please continue.

Matt (30:57):
Okay. Opponent processing is right. You more relevant,
accurate functionality

Rachel (31:04):
Okay.

Matt (31:05):
In things. And so there's, there's a thing that human
brains do, and there's a thingthat they've started that, I
guess, they do in training AImodels. When you have this stuff
compressing the information downto, like, useful trends, you can
overly fit to the data. If youhave a bunch of data points and

(31:29):
you, like, find a linearregression where you find a
curve that fits most of thedata, you can find a a random
curve that hits every singledata point, but that's not
accurate to the trend. And so tofix to make the the model more

(31:49):
accurate to the trend ratherthan overfitting to the data,
you throw random noise Okay.
Into the training data.

Rachel (31:59):
So your noise in the training data. Okay.

Matt (32:02):
When you're this happens just in the way brains work,
this happens when you'retraining AI models now because
they found it's a useful, like, cognitive mechanism that actual
brains use. They just throwrandom data into the training
set because the whole processthat optimizes for the, like,

(32:26):
best model based on the datagets a better outcome if you
just throw in random noise. That's irrelevant.

Rachel (32:37):
Gotcha. I thought it was gonna be a sci fi fantasy
reference, but cognitive scienceis perfectly fine too. So thank
you for that.

Matt (32:44):
You're welcome.

Rachel (32:45):
Okay. So we go back.

Matt (32:47):
That's my role here.

Rachel (32:48):
Because I'm You're cutting you're breaking noise
training the model. Got you.

Matt (32:51):
It it makes the model more resilient.

Rachel (32:53):
Oh, it does. I would agree. Because I have to be,
like,

Matt (32:56):
what were we talking clarify.

Rachel (32:58):
Yeah. Because usually your stuff is just totally off
the wall, and I have to figureout how that related.

Matt (33:02):
And then we have to throw some context back in, and it
keeps the viewer on track You

Rachel (33:07):
know what?

Matt (33:07):
When we
get back to the next point.

Rachel (33:08):
If we just talked through the synopsis, what's
Boring. No. No. No. No.
No. That is not why we are here. The synopsis is a framework on
which we build our episode. Itis not the episode. So we go
back to the morgue speaking, andNatalie's like, she had traces

(33:31):
of lamb's blood in her system.
This is when she holds up thelittle lamb.

Matt (33:34):
Like, a
half a vial of, bleach half

Rachel (33:37):
a little tissue. Watched doctor g medical examiner. They
removed stomach contents with anactual fucking soup ladle.
There's no way she had justisolated lamb's blood that she
should eat

Matt (33:48):
lamb's blood.
There was traces of lamb's blood in her stomach

Rachel (33:51):
Yeah.

Matt (33:52):
And no traces of anything else. Oh. Which means she had
been fasting for, like, 12 hoursbeforehand.

Rachel (33:59):
Well, there's still bile.

Matt (34:01):
Well, there's still bile. Yes.

Rachel (34:03):
But I don't know. I don't know why she knew it was
lamb's blood. I know nothing. Ihave not nothing. Okay?
No context. She sniffed it, andshe was like, it doesn't smell
like cow.

Matt (34:12):
And you do blood type tests.

Rachel (34:14):
Yeah. But not immediately.

Matt (34:16):
Different animals have different blood types.

Rachel (34:19):
Yeah. I mean, she would know if you sent it out. She
didn't, what, like, look at this

Matt (34:23):
or anything like that. You can do, like, do it in, like, 10
test tubes, and you just put alittle reagent in each different
one that reacts to a specificblood type.

Rachel (34:34):
But why would she have that in the morgue? Is it cow?
Is it rat? Is it cat? Is it dog?
Is it lamb? Is it

Matt (34:42):
Why? Because Natalie's a boss.

Rachel (34:45):
She's a fucking boss. That's how she knew, and that's
it. That's good. You know what?I'm just gonna leave it right
there.
And she says she drank it. Itwas in her stomach. She goes,
but I can't figure out why.Like, she's not standing right
next to a vampire. Why would youever drink blood?
And Nick is like, I know why.And he goes into a flashback.

(35:08):
Wham. He, like, leans on thetable. Is the body still on the
table?
Does he lean on this woman'scharred legs and, like, leans
forward? And it's Nick andLacroix and, surprise,
motherfuckers, they were at theinquisition.

Matt (35:24):
I feel like only one of the guys in here actually had a
good, like, Spain Spanishaccent.

Rachel (35:33):
1 guy that comes in does. 1 of the priests that
comes

Matt (35:35):
in Because he says Barcelona.

Rachel (35:37):
Barcelona. He sounds Spain Spanish. Everybody else
sounds like not. But there's a

Matt (35:42):
couple I

Rachel (35:43):
mean, it's not like Spain.

Matt (35:44):
Other guy, the one of the, like, pre one of the
inquisitors. Yeah. He has a goodSpanish, like, enunciation, but
it sounds I don't know, like,very academic Uh-huh. Like,
Spanish. Next And then everybodyelse is like, I took Spanish in
high school for 2 years.

Rachel (36:03):
Speaks Spanish one time. He gets, like, 3 words, and this
feels intentional because it'snot great. It's not like Spain
has one accent. They havenorthern and just like we have
northern accents and southernaccents and

Matt (36:16):
Like doctor New says, every planet has a north.

Rachel (36:19):
Every planet has a north. And you can't, like,
across the board, be like, theydon't sound like they're from
Spain because northern Spanishaccents sound way different.
Yeah. Not Catalonian. Cataloniais its own separate thing.
Barcelona, Catalonia. Cataloniais actually its own separate

(36:39):
language. Okay. And every oncein a while, they're like Texas,
but, like Yeah.

Matt (36:43):
They keep trying to

Rachel (36:44):
say Texas. They'll be like, can we be our own country?
And Spain's like, fucking no.

Matt (36:49):
No. You you have

Rachel (36:50):
Fucking no.

Matt (36:50):
You bring too much money.

Rachel (36:51):
You have Gaudi. You can't secede. So Gaudi? Gaudi is
a famous architect, and he livedin Barcelona, and he built a
bunch of stuff. And everybodythat goes to Spain to see
architecture, you go to seeGaudi.

Matt (37:04):
Okay.

Rachel (37:04):
And so and he's in Barcelona. So they you can't
leave. That's what tourists arehere for, and no one would visit
Spain without you. There'sSeville and Madrid, and it
doesn't matter. So, as just I'msure we have one listener who
has weighed in on Spanishbefore, and that's Maria.
And she, she commented when wetalked about the Spanish in the

(37:27):
episode, Black Buddha, when theInca shows up and he's yelling
at Tracy in Spanish, even thoughwe know he speaks English. And
she said that it wasn't great inthat either. So I have to
imagine it ain't great. Althougha couple of the people actually
sound like they might actuallyspeak Spanish, like, actual
language. But there's only oneperson who has a recognizable

(37:51):
Spanish accent, thestereotypical one where they
sound like they have a lisp.
They don't have a lisp, but itsounds like you have a lisp.
But, anyway, that's neither herenor there. Because the important
part here is that Nick andLacroix got captured by the
inquisition. They got picked upwhile they were sleeping,

(38:12):
apparently. Ugh.

Matt (38:13):
Like Lacroix sleeps.

Rachel (38:15):
Because well, it's day. It's day. And in the first
season, they're actually semicomatose during the day. Mhmm.
That I mean, that didn't meananything, but and they're
painting the door in lamb'sblood, which both make them look
like, and it's like, they'resupposed to be repelled by it,
but maybe it just smells bad.

(38:35):
Like, nobody likes his cow'sblood either.

Matt (38:37):
Right. So I was thinking

Rachel (38:38):
You're like,

Matt (38:39):
oh, gang. Lamb's blood, like, they can drink, like,
mammal blood. Like, though, they've never said anything
about, like, specific blood theycan't drink Yeah. As long as
it's, like, red mammal blood.Yeah.
And I I think you're on tosomething there. Maybe, like, of

(39:00):
all the different mammal bloodsthat you can drink, maybe cow is
like, like, either has almost noflavor or just has a weird,
like, musk to it.

Rachel (39:12):
Soy blood. It's fine.

Matt (39:14):
Like, it's it's not good. It's just Yeah. Bleh.

Rachel (39:20):
Man. It's abundant. It's available, and it ain't shit.
Right. So

Matt (39:23):
But then lamb's blood probably just stinks, and so
they stay away from it. Yeah.

Rachel (39:31):
Like garlic. Why would you stay away from garlic? Well,
because it smells bad.

Matt (39:35):
Yeah. And Well, it smells strongly.

Rachel (39:37):
Well, they get pushed in here, and they, like, like, walk
around the sunlight. And thenone of their cellmates is like,
oh, how'd you guys get here? Andthey're like, oh, they took us
while we're sleeping. They saidwe're in league with the devil.
And their cellmate is like, areyou are you though?
Like, are you in league with thedevil? And Lacroix is like, well

Matt (39:55):
There is no devil.

Rachel (39:57):
Semantics. Actually, Lacroix says God and the devil
are human inventions so that youcan slaughter people without
accountability.

Nick (40:09):
This god and this devil are a mere human contrivance and
convenience. They offer thejustification for slaughter
without the tricky business ofaccountability.

Matt (40:22):
And And

Rachel (40:23):
then you can ask for forgiveness when you're done.
That's the whole point. And sothe guy goes, oh, are you guys,
like, non believers? And Nicksays, if there is a God, he has
yet to show himself to me. AndLacroix is like he just chuckles
at Nick, and Nick's over, like, fucking shut up.

Matt (40:41):
Lacroix is suspiciously unconcerned about this whole
thing.

Rachel (40:46):
The yes. All the way up until the very end, Lacroix is
like, we're gonna get out ofthis. I have survived worse than
worst. We're fucking vampires. Isurvived a fucking volcano.
Okay? I can survive theinquisition. We're gonna get
out. It's gonna be fine. We getto kill people.
It's a win win. I don't know. Igot woken up. I got brought to a

(41:07):
buffet, and now I just have towait till the buffet opens,
which is, Chuck's watch sunset. And this is when the guy is
like, well, there might be evilwithin you, but there is God
also, which is ding ding, twice.
That's twice. So then we comeback because Tracy is like,
Nick, Nick, are you in there? Iam now. He comes back. Just

(41:33):
disassociated for a second.
It's fine. And he's like, youknow, I was just thinking. I I
think we need to go find outmore about Melanie Sawchuk. And
Tracy goes, why?

Matt (41:45):
Come on, Tracy. Keep up. There's She died.

Rachel (41:49):
They're standing over her charred remains, and she's
like, why would we investigatethis one?

Matt (41:53):
Why would we need to find out more about her, Nick?
Explain it to me like I'm 5.

Rachel (42:00):
I don't know. Maybe because we're investigating her,
Tracy?

Matt (42:03):
It's literally your job, Tracy, come on.

Rachel (42:07):
So they go to her apartment, and Nick, I think he
makes, like, a Bible reference,a quote. No. He's

Matt (42:13):
I I I think the the implication was supposed to be
Tracy was suspicious about howinterested Nick is in pursuing
this investigation.

Rachel (42:27):
Yeah. And he knew the thing about the lamb's blood. He
was like, oh, you know, thatused to be used in ancient
exorcism rituals. And that'swhen Tracy's like, why do you
know so much about this stuff? And he says, it's always good to
know what the other side is upto.

Matt (42:43):
But when Tracy is like, why? It just comes off like

Rachel (42:48):
But why though?

Matt (42:49):
Why? Like, why are we even here?

Rachel (42:52):
Well, it could be more of a why. Like, I know we're
gonna investigate MelanieSawchuk. I know we're gonna do
it because she got murdered.

Matt (43:00):
But, like, why is that your highest priority?

Rachel (43:02):
Why for you are we investigating Melanie Sawchuk?

Matt (43:07):
I think that's what the writers probably had in mind.
Yeah. But the way it just plays

Rachel (43:13):
Is why? Yeah. But I really think it's more like,
what does this mean to you?Like, this is a thing we're
doing to pass the time whilewe're waiting for other
paperwork to come in. So why areyou all of a sudden, like, let's
go all in?

Matt (43:31):
I saw an Instagram reel, and there was an interview with
the guy who is the English voiceactor for Goku in Dragon Ball Z.

Rachel (43:40):
Yeah. You said that to me.

Matt (43:42):
And so he said they like, he took the job. He was in the
office for a little while. Like,he sees sees the picture of Goku
ever Goku's the main characterof the entire show. But his boss
who likes to, like, tease himabout stuff, his boss didn't,

(44:05):
like, tell him. And so Goku'slike a himbo.
Like, he's he's this buff, like,strong guy.

Rachel (44:13):
But just a nice

Matt (44:14):
But he's completely oblivious about like, anything
practical, he's got nothing.Yeah. And so he said it was,
like, 2 weeks in, and he wasjust he said he was struggling
to just really wrap his headaround this character. And one
day, his boss comes in, leanshis head in the room, and says,

(44:35):
you know, you're the maincharacter of this entire show.
And he said he responded with, like, oh, wow.
Really? Wow. That's cool. And hesaid, that's when the character
in his clicked in his mind.Like, he said it was life
imitating art.

Rachel (44:54):
Well, he got he goku'd out is what he said. Yeah.

Matt (45:00):
So I feel that that's the vibe Tracy is getting off.

Rachel (45:03):
Yeah. I love that she's like I think, you know, what's
happening here?

Matt (45:08):
Just this this particular conversation.

Rachel (45:10):
Well, we had that long discussion at the beginning of
this episode, how sometimes theway you present yourself is a
signal. Mhmm. And she's aattractive, thin blonde woman.
It's really hard for her to saysomething that gets taken
seriously. Yeah.
Especially in the nineties inthis context. And she's supposed

(45:32):
to be way younger than everybodyelse. It's like having a
teenager tag along with you, andthey're like, but why though?
And no matter how they ask that,it's never gonna sound deep even
if they're like, but why? You'regonna be like, come on, honey.
Do you not did you not pick itup? We're investigating a
murder. And what she's reallyasking, I think, is like, why

(45:54):
for you? So into this? Why foryou?
Yeah. Why for you? Yeah. Becauseas soon as we as soon as he
makes the announcement aboutlamb's blood, how it's used in
exorcisms, they go to her house, and there's a broken window, and
Tracy's like, there's blood onthis window. And Nick and Nick
is unconcerned.

(46:16):
He does not check the window. He's like, oh, cool. She's like,
maybe somebody jumped out, andhe was like, it's broken glass.
You cut yourself. Why is thefucking window broken?

Matt (46:29):
We never go back to that.

Rachel (46:30):
We don't go back to that at all. We're like

Matt (46:32):
Unless it was just her going insane.

Rachel (46:36):
It was her first, attempt on her life that night.
I don't know. Like, nobody theythey're just like, oh, okay.
Cool. They don't take samples.
They don't take evidence. They're not wearing gloves. They
just walk into this woman'shouse, and they're like, oh, the
window's broken, and there'sglass on it. Oh, I hope she
didn't cut herself when shebroke it. That's really sad.

(46:56):
Maybe that's what's oh, well, what? And then Tracy's like, oh,
it's really cold in here. Youknow, the fucking window's open.
Like What

Matt (47:04):
does she she shivers when she tucks touches this book
Yeah. And then with her barefingers.

Rachel (47:10):
And then they flip the book over, and it's just like,
ectotherm. Dummy's Guide toExorcism. It's literally like,
so you wanna be an exorcist?

Matt (47:22):
Exorcism for dummies, a historical perspective. Lamb's
blood. Oh, it's written by exreverend VanderWaal. Is it? Oh,
no.
I'm just putting that bullshitout there.

Rachel (47:37):
Oh, it could be. I don't know. I didn't even look.

Matt (47:39):
I wonder if it's a real book. Like, if somebody was just
at, like, a used bookstore downthe road No. And they're like,
we're doing this. Possessionefforts would have been

Rachel (47:49):
fucking hysterical if they flipped it over and it was
the denied.

Matt (47:55):
Oh, that would have been a really nice callback.

Rachel (47:58):
It would have been a good but alas, it's just like
exorcism. And he's like, oh,guys. I think this book's about
exorcism. And then they go backto the precinct, and Reese is
like, are you guys fuckingserious about this? Are you
telling me you think this womanmight have been possessed?

(48:18):
And Tracy's like, I don't know, captain. It was really cold

Matt (48:26):
there. So Reese is like, well, you said the window was
broken. Right?

Rachel (48:30):
And it's October.

Matt (48:31):
Remember, it's October. We're in Canada.

Rachel (48:34):
We're in Canada. Do you not see the picture? Canada. Do
you not?

Matt (48:40):
Do that. That's for you, Meg.

Rachel (48:42):
There's a Korean drama, called goblin, which is really,
really good. And there's a partwhere the 2 main characters go
to Canada. And so the girl islike, are we in Canada? But when
she says Canada, she says Canadabecause she's speaking Korean.
And so every when we were inCanada, every time we had to say

(49:04):
Canada to Mary.

Matt (49:05):
Well, we tried to get Meg to watch it, and she was

Rachel (49:08):
She was outraged.

Matt (49:08):
Not into it. No.

Rachel (49:12):
So Canada?

Matt (49:14):
Just riffing off of her outrage. We kept saying.

Rachel (49:20):
So, anyway, that's not we love Korean people. Okay. So

Matt (49:24):
k drama is high culture.

Rachel (49:26):
It is high culture. So it's October. It's Canada. Did
you not see the picture of me?Right?
Like, whenever they're walkingin the set into the police
precinct set, there's a pictureof Reese up on the wall, and
it's him next to a Canadianflag. Like, just so you guys
know, Reese is Canadian. If youdidn't get that from him liking
hockey. So Nick is trying to

Matt (49:49):
I am totally convinced. Well, Clark,

Rachel (49:53):
that seals

Matt (49:54):
it. Coffee. No. Hockey. Not coffee.

Rachel (49:58):
He likes coffee.

Matt (50:00):
Hockey. Hockey. Hockey.

Rachel (50:04):
Nick's trying to interrogate the brother, and
he's like, so your sister waspossessed by the devil, and you
got her an exorcism. To I'm II'm asking you. Am I I feel like
when I'm talking to the kids andthey won't respond

Matt (50:17):
This guy is doing really, really good at being just
playing it straight.

Rachel (50:21):
Yeah. This feels like when I'm talking to the kids and
they don't respond, and I'mlike, my mouth is moving, and it
feels like sound is coming out.Can you guys hear me? And they
they go, yes. Like like, it'sthe lamest question ever.
Well, you weren't answering me.I didn't know. He's not
answering him. And so, finally,he's like, look. I get it.
You're a religious man. Youdon't wanna lie. I don't wanna

(50:43):
hear you lie either, so justtell me the truth. It's fine.
Like, I'm not gonna what whatwhat's the worst that could
possibly happen?
Just tell me the truth. Did shehave an exorcism? And finally,
he's like, yes. I took her to abunch of doctors. I took her to
psychiatrist.
I tried everything. She justwasn't getting better, and it's

(51:06):
because it wasn't in her mind. She was literally pro possessed
by the spirit.

Matt (51:11):
It was spiritual illness.

Rachel (51:13):
Yeah. And the goodness in her was being consumed by
evil.

Matt (51:17):
She had a spiritual infection.
Yeah.

Rachel (51:19):
And she needed a spiritual animal. Let's get that
out.

Matt (51:22):
Spiritually transmitted disease.

Rachel (51:24):
I watched I watched Dracula dead and loving it the
other day, and I totally forgotabout the running enema joke.
Have you tried an enema? Do youthink an enema would solve that?
I think we need to bring thatback. Just do you think an enema
would solve that?
A spiritual enema from doctorvan der Waal, who's from

(51:45):
everything. He's, like, such anineties actor. As soon as you
see him, you're like, whoosh. He's in, like, legit everything.
And then I think it's because hehad that really stunning voice.

Matt (51:55):
Oh, yes. He has a very distinct voice.

Rachel (51:57):
Yeah. He says he tried to help her with doctors, but it
was her soul. It was her soulthat was sick. And he talks to
Nick, and he says, there is adevil detective, and he has
every bit as real as you or me.And it's so traumatizing, it

(52:20):
sends Nick into a flashback.
And it's LaCroix chatting withtheir cellmate, Sancho, who is
the the actual good guy. Andhe's like, okay. So what did you
do to get here? And Lacroix is,like, leaning on the wall in
this really awkward position. Iwas possessed by very valuable

(52:44):
land right near Barcelona.
And LaCroix goes, ah, yes. Thegreatest fault in the eyes of
the inquisitor. And then heturns to the guy who's legit
chained to the wall, and he'slike, what about you? And the
guy goes, I am no more a devilthan you are.

Matt (53:05):
Oh.

Rachel (53:06):
And Lacroix goes, I quite agree. Why

Matt (53:11):
Lacroix's just having a great time.

Rachel (53:13):
Why give glory to a devil other than yourself?

Quote (53:18):
Has been marked by the beast.

Rachel (53:20):
I am no more

Matt (53:21):
a demon than you are.

Nick (53:25):
I quite agree. Why give glory to a devil other than
yourself?

Matt (53:34):
That align only Lacroix
could cover.

Rachel (53:36):
Which is the most Lacroix bullshit I can ever
imagine anyone spouting. He'slike, you know all that shit
that I did? I fucking did it,and I'm not giving anyone else
credit. Don't even ask. Did Imurder everyone?

Matt (53:53):
Cheapen my history.

Rachel (53:55):
I did all of that.

Matt (53:56):
That's my legacy.

Rachel (53:58):
The part where I made an entire arm where I gave an
entire army permission to rapeand pillage, that was me. The
part where I've murdered, like,half a 1000000 people because
I'm 2,000 fucking years old, allme. I get no cop outs. I own
that shit. I did that.
That's who I am. And that is sofucking LaCroix, and I fucking

(54:19):
love it. I love

Matt (54:21):
Don't reduce me to a puppet.

Rachel (54:23):
I love an evil character that is literally, like, you
don't understand. I'm not lockedin here with you. You're locked
in here with me. And so theycome in and they're like, hey,
guys. Time for us to take one ofyou.
And so they take the guy who'slegit chained to the wall, and
this guy starts shouting inSpanish, including, like,

(54:45):
bellial. So, obviously, thisdude is actually possessed. I
think that's what we're supposedto be getting. And we come back
to the to present time becausethe guy's still talking, and
he's like, Satan takes hold ofpeople, detective. He he sends
his angels, and he promises youpower and eternity.

(55:07):
And Nick is like, yeah. I know.I know this is better than most
people, and the guy keeps going. He's like, the devil has to be
driven out. So if you have thedevil in you, it must you gotta
get that shit out.
It's like an evil pimple. Yougotta pop it. And so he asks
about his sister, and he's like, well, is that why? Like, do you

(55:30):
think that's why she did whatshe did? And the brother is
like, yeah.
She must have killed herself tobe free of the demon's
influence. The devil our beliefscompel us to work against Satan.
So if what she needed to do toend Satan's influence in her
life was end her life, then, yes, that's what she did. And

(55:54):
Nick is like, okay. Cool.
But you sent her to somebody.Who did you send her to? I just
need a name. And he tells him. He's like doctor Max Vanderwall.

Matt (56:02):
Okay. So one of the ideas I wanted to talk about here in
reference to this episode is theidea of Satan as, like, an
individual who's, like, theenemy of God and actively works

(56:23):
evil and mischief and whateverin humanity Yeah. Is newer than
Lacroix. Yeah. Especially whenyou start talking about Lucifer
who is a character in, like,Christian fan fiction.

Rachel (56:41):
Yeah. I mean, so Pompey arrives in 79 AD.

Matt (56:48):
Right.

Rachel (56:49):
Yeah. So he's only he only

Matt (56:51):
A a lot of the, like, formalization of Satan like,
Satan, like, with a capital s asa pronoun, like, a name of a
single person, entity, whatever, doesn't get used much until,
like, the 2nd century whenthey're putting the rest of the
Bible together. So Lacroix wouldhave gotten turned into a

(57:16):
vampire, and he was probably upto speed on most of the
religious drama Yeah. Especiallywith the Roman Empire and the
Christians and all that. So ashe's being a vampire, fucking
his way through Europe, he he'sprobably learning like, hearing

(57:38):
he's probably hearing the peopletalk about it, you know, over
the years decades.

Rachel (57:44):
There's this weird cult that just won't seem to go away.
Yeah. And Yeah.

Matt (57:48):
Now they're talking about Satan as, you know, the the
general of this army thatactively works against God.
Yeah. It's like, what the fuckis this? This is somebody's
making up new stories.

Rachel (58:02):
You know what it'd probably feel like?

Matt (58:05):
Mhmm.

Rachel (58:06):
You you're, like, 20 ish, 30 ish maybe when, you
know, like, Star Wars has beenout for, like, 30 years. You're
born, and there's a whole bunchof people who are super fans of
star wars, and you're like, okay. That's, like, cool. Star
wars is I mean, it's fine. Andfor a while, it's like, well,

(58:30):
this isn't really gonna catchon.
Right? And then it sort ofdisappears, and then you live
long enough to see Star Warscome back, and then Star Wars
get more and more and moreproperties associated with it
and create a larger and largerfollowing. And then

Matt (58:47):
you keep retconning things into the original story.

Rachel (58:50):
You literally live long enough that Star Wars has become
an actual religion and everybodybelieves in it, but you remember
that it was just this sciencefiction bullshit that somebody
wrote down, like, a couple 1000years ago, and everyone is
acting like it's this big deal. And to you, it's not a big deal

(59:10):
because you remember when starwars came out. Are you, like,
you were around right around thetime star wars came out and it
started to get big and you'relike, but fucking what?

Matt (59:21):
Right. So so I can see why Lacroix is so dismissive of any
all of these claims. Yeah.

Rachel (59:30):
He's like, the devil sure what the fuck ever.

Matt (59:32):
So yeah. The devil, Satan. Uh-huh. Yeah. Like
Do you

Rachel (59:37):
know how many religions I've gone through in the time
that I've been alive? And theneveryone's, like, trying to get
him to be on their side, andhe's like, fucking no. Like, I
no. He wasn't even it's not thathe wasn't raised religious. This
religion did not exist when hewas young.
Right. So of course he's notthat what the Bible says.

(01:00:04):
Alright. God struck me downthere. So that's why the Bible
says you have to train up achild early, because if you
don't, they'll never believe,and it's literally because you
have to indoctrinate a childyoung in order to believe the
ridiculous bullshit that'srequired to believe in
Christianity.
So Lacroix didn't

Matt (01:00:24):
Modern mainstream Christianity.

Rachel (01:00:26):
Yeah. The Yeah. Hyper I'm talking codified.

Matt (01:00:30):
The corporate Yeah. Corporatized Yeah. Dogmatic
Christianity.

Rachel (01:00:35):
So Lacroix didn't even have that a little bit. He
believed there were, like, abunch of gods, and they all
lived on a mountain, and theycould come down and fuck people
and have half gods who would goon adventures. Like, that's what
he came up in. And then all of asudden, you're like, no. There's
2.
There's the God, and there'sGod, like, the God, and then
there's the devil, like, thedevil, like, the bad guy.

Matt (01:00:57):
Right. Capital s, Satan.

Rachel (01:00:59):
Yeah. And they rule the world, and you either follow 1
or you follow the other, andthere's no middle ground. And
he's like, I I am not receivingthat. I reject all of that. It
sounds like bullshit.
No. Thank you. And then he turns

Matt (01:01:12):
He's just making shit up now.

Rachel (01:01:15):
Then he turns, Nick, and Nick won't give up Star Wars,
like, to turn out on the chest. He's like

Matt (01:01:23):
he's like, no. I want to be a Jedi.

Rachel (01:01:26):
He's like, no. Look. I was there when they made Star
Wars, and I'm telling you, it'sjust a story. And Nick is like,
it is more than a story. It ismy life.
I will not give up on my dreams. And, like, was finally, like,
fucking fine. Whatever. It'sfine. In fact, I think it's
mostly in this episode wherehe's like, fucking fine.
Like, whatever it takes to if Ihave to give a little to get a

(01:01:50):
little, I can give a little, butthey come out of the, they come
out of the room, theinterrogation room, and Tracy's
like, do you think the devilexists? Do you really believe
the devil exists?

Nick (01:02:08):
Well, a lot of people do. Maybe that's all it takes.

Reese (01:02:11):
I gotta admit, you just look around these days, it's not
hard to see the signs. Although,if the devil did make her do it,
I'd like to see anyone try toprosecute her.

Matt (01:02:20):
Her. And Nick in Lacroix style does not No. Directly
answer.

Rachel (01:02:25):
Reese kind of agrees. He's like, yeah. I mean, he's
like, oh, but It's

Matt (01:02:29):
like, I can see why people might think that based on what
I've seen, like, happening in,like, the world around me.

Rachel (01:02:40):
Nick actually says, maybe it's because enough people
believe he's real.

Matt (01:02:44):
And that's all it takes.

Rachel (01:02:45):
And that's all it takes. And Reese is like, nah. I mean,
I do up until somebody tries tosay the devil made me do it, and
then that's never gonna work asa defense. And that's his only
response too. Everyone's like,Tracy, fucking what?
And

Matt (01:02:59):
Right. This is that's where I was really feeling like,
Tracy's always just puttinglittle she's putting out little
emotional bids.

Rachel (01:03:07):
Little bids. Sometimes they're big bids. Yeah. Yeah.
And Reese goes, you know what?
Just go confirm this priest'salibi, and either he doesn't
have one and you can continuethis investigation, or he's got
one, and you can just write thisoff as a, quote, crazy lady
suicide. K. So they show up atVanderWaals, and he opens the

(01:03:32):
door, and he's like, hi. Andthey're like, oh, hey, sup.
We're here to see you.
And he's like, mom, just alittle bit busy.

Matt (01:03:40):
Right. I like how he's a little bit busy, and then it's
like, nah. Come in while Ifinish this exorcism.

Rachel (01:03:47):
Oh, it's fine. He's strapped to the table. He ain't
going nowhere. Well, actually,Nick walks in. He's trying to
tell him, like, no.
Thank you, and Nick's like, cool. Thanks. And he just walks
around him and walks in. And he,like, scowls up at a cross, but
he doesn't burst into flames, and he's not hissing or running
away

Matt (01:04:02):
or anything. We've established throughout the
seasons that Nick is becomingmore and more resistant or less
susceptible to religious, I canagree. Religiously endowed
items.

Rachel (01:04:20):
Yeah. Well, he says, so you're a priest. Did you get
kicked out? And he's like, actually, I got excommunicated.

Matt (01:04:29):
He said he asks him if he retired.

Rachel (01:04:31):
Oh, yeah. And he goes, no. I was forcibly retired,
excommunicated because I, I wasa little too devoted to the old
ways of the religion. And Nickis like, okay. Alright.
Sounds good. I also have oldways of following this religion,
probably older than yours. Yeah. And so Tracy's like, okay. Well,

(01:04:54):
do you live in Toronto?
Like, are you from around here? And he goes, if evil took up
permanent residence here, sowould I.

Matt (01:05:01):
I would like to note the crispness of the second t when
Tracy says Toronto.

Rachel (01:05:12):
Oh, maybe she's not from Toronto.

Matt (01:05:15):
Toronto.

Rachel (01:05:16):
There are no t's. This is canon. It is c h r o n o,
Toronto.

Nick (01:05:24):
Yep.

Rachel (01:05:24):
Yeah. So Nick looks over at the door like, there's shit
going on behind that door. Andthen he keeps trying to he's,
like, inching towards the doorthrough this whole thing. Like,
I'm just gonna go look at thesebooks over here, which are
closer to the door. Oh, wouldyou look at that thing that's
closer to the door, which thepriest calls him out on.
But, the priest does admit vander Waal admits that Melanie was

(01:05:46):
there, but the devil she had inher was very powerful, and he is
shocked, but not surprised thatit overcame her. And she
possibly committed suicide. AndNick is like, well, we're just
trying to understand. And hegoes, meh, how many

Matt (01:06:05):
suicides succumbed to the demon.

Rachel (01:06:08):
Yeah. And he's like, meh, how many suicides are ever
fully understood anyway? And Ijust wanna point out when you're
listening to this on headphones, the background is extremely
obvious, and I don't think Ihave ever noticed how much
background noise is in these oldtelevision shows until you
listen to them. But in thisscene, there is music playing

(01:06:31):
that straight up sounds likethere's an elephant in the
background.

Matt (01:06:38):
Just the ambient sound?

Rachel (01:06:41):
I think it's supposed to be distorted screaming, but it's
like

Matt (01:06:47):
so we just relistened to it. Yeah. And it's like these
long, like, organ, like, churchorgan chords. Like,

Rachel (01:06:55):
wow. Yeah.

Matt (01:06:57):
Wow. And then it's like every other of these long cords
that get held for, like, I don'tknow, 20 seconds. You hear

Rachel (01:07:10):
It sounds like an elephant.

Matt (01:07:12):
And it sounds like an elephant.

Rachel (01:07:14):
And once you hear it, you can't unhear it. You can't
You can't.

Matt (01:07:20):
Mister Mullen. Fred. Fred. What what was going on?

Rachel (01:07:24):
What? You know, I think it's supposed to be distorted
screaming. Yeah. I think that'swhat it's supposed to be. And,
VanderWaal is like I mean, shewas troubled.
She died. I don't know what totell you. And Nick's like, I'm
not sure if it was a suicide. We're like, we're not even sure
if it was a suicide. And thepriest goes, I'm not sure you
ever will.

(01:07:46):
Well, what? Know if it's asuicide? Know what?

Matt (01:07:50):
Will not be sure. I think I think it's technically
grammatically correct.

Rachel (01:07:59):
Yeah. But It just it plays out weird dialogue wise.

Matt (01:08:04):
Yes. It doesn't feel like realist plausible dialogue.
Yeah. Yeah.

Rachel (01:08:10):
But the priest does notice that Nick is inching
towards this door. He's like,oh, you wanna know what's
through that door? You can gothrough that door. So he opens
the sus door.

Matt (01:08:20):
You wanna see something cool?

Rachel (01:08:21):
You wanna see like, I got like, he wants to feel I was
busy doing. And there's a guystrapped to the table, and he's
like, this is me working. I'm atwork right now. And the room is
full of crosses, and so Nick is,of course, like, nope.

Matt (01:08:36):
Nick sees somebody strapped to a table and is like,
I'm totally familiar.

Rachel (01:08:41):
Oh, it's an exorcism. Oh.

Matt (01:08:44):
Oh, I I was thinking more like kinky

Rachel (01:08:47):
sex thing. I am not because we have plenty of
opportunity to discuss kinky sexin about, oh, 10 minutes. So the
the priest walks in and he goes, who am I talking to you? Am I
talking to? Am I talking toMichael?
And the guy's like, it's notMichael.

Nick (01:09:05):
Michael's not here. Michael's not here right now.

Rachel (01:09:08):
Please leave a message at the.

Matt (01:09:14):
Elephants. Please leave a message after the elephants.

Rachel (01:09:24):
Vanderwall starts speaking in Latin and spouting
Bible quotes, and Nick's in thecorner like, so all Natalie
needed

Matt (01:09:33):
to do
Garrett is doing a great job appearing to be very
uncomfortable while this guy isexercising a demon.

Rachel (01:09:43):
All Natalie needed to do to find out whether or not Nick
was a vampire was look overduring this conversation because
he's

Matt (01:09:50):
like Tracy?

Rachel (01:09:51):
Oh, yeah. Sorry, Tracy. Natalie already knows. Oh, but
Tracy's Tracy just needed tolook over because Nick is like,
oh, ah, e, ah,

Matt (01:09:59):
ah, oh.

Rachel (01:09:59):
It's like

Matt (01:10:00):
locked in.

Rachel (01:10:01):
It's like the death scene where Paul Reubens is
dying in Buffy the VampireSlayer when they

Matt (01:10:07):
he was happening in the background for so long.

Rachel (01:10:09):
He was allowed to adlib that. That's why it's like that.
They were like, no. However youwanna fucking do it because he
gets staked, and then he's like,oh, ah, ah, ah, It's the best
scene, honestly. Yeah.
Gregor Hower is a vampire. PaulReubens as a vampire who dies
dramatically. And so he ends upcommanding the devil out of

(01:10:32):
Michael, and there's enoughreverb in Michael's voice when
this happens that it, like, hevomits the demon out. It
resonates over the room to Nick, and Nick is like, whoo. He,
like, throws his head back, andhis eyes go green.

Matt (01:10:50):
You are.

Rachel (01:10:57):
I'm sure he's fine, though. Right? I guess it's
gonna be fine. That can't bethat can't be bad because
Michael's fine now.

Matt (01:11:06):
Right. He's just left. He's just reacting to the
violent release of energy fromthe exorcism.

Rachel (01:11:13):
There's an episode of Angel where they have this kid,
I think, that's possessed withthe demon. And so they cast the
demon out, and they have to geta box to keep the demon because
if they cast it out withouthaving another vessel for it to
go in, it'll be free, and it'llbe able to hurt people.

Matt (01:11:28):
I was actually thinking about something like that when
this happened.

Rachel (01:11:31):
Well, the demon comes up.

Matt (01:11:32):
The guy have something to trap it or whatever?

Rachel (01:11:35):
Well, it breaks the box. And she's and Gordy Lee is like,
shit. Because she was supposedto get one made by blind Tibetan
monks, and instead, she got onethat was done by, like, mute
nuns. She's like, it's not thesame. And so they leave.

(01:11:57):
They leave after that. They'relike, okay. Cool. Thanks for the
alibi. Strange man.
I mean, he didn't do anythingillegal, but everybody was there
consensually, so whatever. Sothey leave, and Tracy's like,
it's all set.

Matt (01:12:09):
Demon was not there consensually.

Rachel (01:12:11):
Well, I guess

Matt (01:12:12):
The demons don't have rights. Because they don't have
an independent physical

Rachel (01:12:20):
They have not been proven to exist. That's why they
don't have rights. So Tracy islike, I think it's all smoke and
mirrors. You know, pay noattention to that man behind the
curtain, and Nick does not getthe reference. He goes, what?
And she's like, you know, wizardof Oz. And for once ever, Tracy
is not on board with thesesupernatural shenanigans. She's

(01:12:43):
like, I don't buy it. I buyvampires. I buy every other
supernatural thing we'veencountered up until now.
I buy that you got over amnesiaafter a week's vacation, but I
don't

Matt (01:12:56):
I buy that you got over a gaping hole in your head.

Rachel (01:13:00):
Yeah. A gunshot wound to the head, but demons fucking
step too far. And Nick, ofcourse, is possessed at this
point because he's driving downthe road, and he sees a guy in a
priest outfit, and he swervesaround it. And Tracy goes, Nick,
are you okay? And he's like, yeah.
I thought there was a cat.

Matt (01:13:19):
Nick?

Rachel (01:13:25):
Nick, are you okay? What's the matter?

Nick (01:13:28):
Nothing. I thought there was a cat.

Rachel (01:13:32):
And it also just so happens that there's a robbery
at this store right at thismoment. And so this guy comes
out holding a woman hostage, andNick hypnotizes the guy into
letting her go. And he'scontinuing to hypnotize him, and
then he's like, put the gun

Matt (01:13:57):
down. His hypnotized voice changes. So okay.
I can

Rachel (01:14:02):
always tell it's gonna be good when you crack yourself
up before you've even said it.

Matt (01:14:06):
It's more the obscurity of the reference.

Rachel (01:14:08):
Oh, thank god.

Matt (01:14:09):
Okay. So in the wheel of time

Rachel (01:14:13):
Wheel of time isn't obscure anymore, honey.

Matt (01:14:16):
I guess you're right. Okay. In the later books, in the
Wheel of Time

Rachel (01:14:20):
Those are, though.

Matt (01:14:21):
So there's the Aes Sedai, and there's the 7 groups clicks
the 7 clicks of the Aes Sedai, and they're all different
colors.

Rachel (01:14:32):
There's just colors. Yeah.

Matt (01:14:34):
Yeah. The Aja's. Yeah. And there's this, like, mythical
evil black aja.

Rachel (01:14:43):
Yeah.

Matt (01:14:43):
And, they they have this there's this thing that they can
the way they use their magic, where they can make it invisible
to other people, other magicusers.

Rachel (01:14:57):
The weave.

Matt (01:14:58):
Yes. They can invert the weave and make it invisible to
other practitioners. And so,they're like, how could I how
could there be, like, black Aja?We have to swear the 3 oaths,
while holding this ancientartifact, and the words that you

(01:15:20):
speak out loud, like, aremagically binding and have to be
truthful. Yeah.
The oath rod. Yeah. I'm Okay.I'm adding context and
generalization

Rachel (01:15:33):
Thank you.

Matt (01:15:33):
For people who are not familiar. And they're, like, all
every single Aes Sedai has gonethrough this very public
ceremony for, for swearing theiroaths. So how would a, black Aja

(01:15:54):
sister be able to, like, swearthe same three oaths that all of
us swear, like, basically don'thurt people, don't kill people,
don't make weapons, somethinglike that.

Rachel (01:16:08):
Yeah.

Matt (01:16:08):
And, oh, and never tell a lie. How would they be able to
swear those oaths publicly butthen not be constrained by them
later

Rachel (01:16:19):
Yeah.

Matt (01:16:20):
After we find out that you can invert the weave of the a
spell and make it invisible tothe other practitioners, because
everybody if you, like, domagic, you can see the the lines
of the different, like, colorsof magic, whatever. Yeah. It's
all very visible to other peoplewho can do the same magic. So

(01:16:45):
the they think they learn, oh,you can, like, invert the weave
and then it's only the lines of,like, magic are only visible to
the person doing the magic, andthey learn, figure out, deduce
that during the, like, publicceremony where they swear their

(01:17:07):
oaths, what the Black Ajasisters are doing is they have
this spell wrapped around theirhead, and the leaves are
inverted, so it's invisible toeverybody else. But they speak
like the black aja oaths, Andwhen it goes through the spell

(01:17:28):
that's the bubble around theirhead, it comes out as

Rachel (01:17:32):
the standard of oaths. Yeah.

Matt (01:17:33):
So they personally are speaking truthful statements
that they are bound to later, but everybody else hears the
standard 3 o's. So that's what Iwas thinking about when Nick is
hypnotizing this guy and tellinghim to put the gun down and put

(01:17:56):
your hands up. Nick is hearinghimself say, put the gun down
Yeah. And put your hands up. Butthe what the guy is actually
hearing, what the demon isactually saying through Nick is,
like, put the gun in your mouthand pull the trigger.

Rachel (01:18:14):
Yeah. And he goes, alright. I'll do it. Yeah. And
ends up killing him.

Matt (01:18:18):
So

Rachel (01:18:19):
In front of Tracy and Nick.

Matt (01:18:21):
Long explanation of

Rachel (01:18:24):
Yes. Thank you.

Matt (01:18:25):
Steady obscure.

Rachel (01:18:26):
Listen, honey. To create a blueberry pie from scratch,
one must first create theuniverse. So Reese says it's not
surprising. They go back, andthey're like, I don't know what
happened. This guy just killedhimself in front of us.
And Reese is like, you don'tneed counseling. And, I mean,

(01:18:51):
3rd time lucky is what he says.He goes, 3rd time lucky? Thank
you, Reese.

Matt (01:18:57):
Reese needs some, like, sensitivity mental health
training.

Rachel (01:19:00):
Yeah. I I don't know. They need it. It's the nineties.
That doesn't exist.
They don't have

Matt (01:19:06):
that. It does exist. Yeah. But only in a performative way
for sexual harassment.

Rachel (01:19:13):
Yeah. He goes, all anyone cares about is that you
saved that woman. Didn't we havea whole episode where we talked
about how excess violence wasnot great? I'm pretty sure we
had an episode about that, butit's cool. They saved that
woman.
That's all that matters. And,Natalie, what oh my god. Why am
I getting everybody's namewrong? It must be because
there's a demon. Because Tracygoes first of all, Reese is

(01:19:36):
sick.
Half the precinct is sick. AndTracy's like, oh, have you guys
not found that weird smell inthe building? And Reese is like,
no. We think there's a sewerlink somewhere.

Matt (01:19:46):
To the to the demonic energies

Nick (01:19:48):
Apparently.

Matt (01:19:49):
Because of her inner conflict.

Rachel (01:19:52):
Well, the demon didn't pick her, did it? And so Nick
goes to the desk, and he, like,he starts shaking, and he grabs
his desk. And Tracy comes over, and she's like, Nick, Nick, are
you okay? And then a guy getselectrocuted on a ladder right
next to him.

Matt (01:20:06):
My first reaction to that was, oh, they reused that
gimmick.

Rachel (01:20:10):
Yeah. From faithful followers. Yeah. Faithful
followers. So Nick goes home.
He's like, you know what? Shit'sweird. I think I'm just gonna go
back to my house.

Matt (01:20:20):
The vibes are off.

Rachel (01:20:22):
The vibes are not immaculate. I'm going back to my
house. So Nick goes home, andhe, like, faint walks over to
the fridge to chug some blood. And then, Matt was like, oh, the
camera is angled. The cameratilted.
So you know shit's about to godown, and he's drinking his
blood. And then he's like, oh,no. And he runs over to the

(01:20:42):
sink, and the sink startsbacking up. And then he, like,
looks up, and his eyes start toglow like a weird, ugly dream.

Matt (01:20:50):
Deal if you're on, like, the 6th floor of a warehouse
building, and your drain isbacking up. Yeah. That's a
problem.

Rachel (01:20:58):
That's a problem. And then he drops his bottle of
blood and it splashes all overthe floor. And then he walks
over, and all of the piano wiresin his piano are broken. And
then somebody, like, screams andthrows a bottle at him, And he
ends up, like, running at thecamera, and then we get launched
into the flashback all at thesame time.

Matt (01:21:15):
Where we see the motorcycle is back.

Rachel (01:21:17):
When he runs, when he flees the apartment. This is the
part where he just runs at thecamera, and we, like, whoosh
into a flashback. And it gave methere was that one episode that
just had stellar transitions.Like, every time we transitioned
to the flashback.

Matt (01:21:30):
That was directed by Gar?

Rachel (01:21:32):
Was that the one that was directed by Gere? But every
time we went into a flashback,it was like, shit. That was a
great transition.

Matt (01:21:39):
Because I said that it must have been, like, a filming
intern. I'm like Yeah. Playaround with it.

Rachel (01:21:47):
Yeah. Can we just have him look after

Nick (01:21:49):
the last step?

Matt (01:21:49):
We've never seen before.

Rachel (01:21:50):
Let's do some cool shit. Well, that this felt like cool
shit, and it's Lacroix grillingthe other soulmate about god. I
think his name is Sancho.

Matt (01:22:00):
Yes. The remaining guy is Sancho. Yeah. The Spanish
Spanish guy.

Rachel (01:22:04):
And the guy is like, I don't know. It's not for me to
question God. And Laquag goes,of course, you can't ask because
then you might actually get ananswer.

Quote (01:22:14):
It is not for me

Nick (01:22:15):
to question. Of course not. Because once the question
is asked, it must be answered.

Matt (01:22:22):
Yeah. Once the question is asked, then the answer will
come.

Rachel (01:22:26):
So the guy gets a little pissed off. He's like, well, you
serve the devil, and Lacroixgoes, I serve no one. And so
Sancho fires back, then you arewithout purpose. And LaCroix is
like, that maybe, but at least Idon't lie to myself. It's like,

(01:22:46):
I don't I don't subscribe tohustle culture.

Matt (01:22:50):
I would say Lacroix deludes himself, deceives
himself, lies to himself Yeah.About one thing, that Nick will
eventually be

Nick (01:23:00):
his friend.

Rachel (01:23:01):
Say about his chances of getting with Nick because that's
about the one thing that he'slike, I'm pretty sure if I keep
banging my head against thiswall, I will eventually it will
eventually develop a hole.

Matt (01:23:10):
It's a do this. It's a classic you're too close to the
problem problem.

Rachel (01:23:16):
Yeah. Well, Nick steps away from Lacroix and goes to
stand next to Sancho, andSancho, like, flinches away. And
Nick goes, you you don't haveanything to fear for me. And
Sancho's like, oh, yeah. The guywho can't walk in the sun can't
go near the crosses, and isrepelled by lamb's blood.
Yeah. I'm real safe with you.

Nick (01:23:36):
You have nothing to fear for me. You?

Quote (01:23:41):
You cannot walk in the daylight. The lamb's blood and
crosses repel you. Tell me youare not an angel of the devil.

Nick (01:23:50):
Yes, Nicholas. Do tell.

Rachel (01:23:55):
Nick said he's like, what manner of devil are you or
whatever? And LaCroix goes, oh,yeah. I wanna hear this
explanation. Do tell, Nicholas.

Matt (01:24:05):
I'm just imagining Nick's response as something like, god.
It's not my fault I haveallergies.

Rachel (01:24:13):
Sunlight, religiously charged objects, garlic, and
commitment. We know this. It iscanon. Okay? I have a hat and
everything.
This is garlic and commitment onit.

Matt (01:24:24):
I'm allergic. It's not my fault. Thank you, Meg.

Rachel (01:24:28):
So that was our Patreon gift. Our Patreon, our first and
most devoted of all patrons, whonow has a podcast called Garrett
can get it that you can listento, sent me a hat that says
garlic and commitment on it. Onthe episode, we were like,
garlic and commitment. These arehis known allergies. So the the

(01:24:50):
inquisitors show up, and they'relike, come on, Sancho.
It's time to go murderize you.And Sancho's like, no. I am a
devoted Christian, and they're

Matt (01:24:59):
like has fallen in love with this man.

Rachel (01:25:01):
He has. I mean, he's

Matt (01:25:02):
like Nick. Nick has fallen in love with this man.

Rachel (01:25:05):
Yes. Thank you. Don't we know that they're 2 separate
people. We just make jokes aboutit.

Matt (01:25:11):
Are they, though?

Rachel (01:25:12):
Not in this episode. They're not. So Nick

Matt (01:25:16):
But in in about 5 minutes Yeah. Gary will be unleashed.

Rachel (01:25:21):
Unleashed? But Nick is like, I'm the devil. And I tried
to get this guy to join me, andhe refused to join me. And
Lacroix watches Nick

Matt (01:25:31):
His faith.

Rachel (01:25:32):
No. No. No. No. The best part of this scene is Lacroix
watches Nick vamp out, and thenhe goes, oh, really, Nick?
Such crass showmanship. Like

Matt (01:25:44):
Well, even Nick

Rachel (01:25:45):
How how Pesay

Matt (01:25:47):
Nick is telling the inquisitors that the guy's faith
stopped him from joining thethem

Rachel (01:25:54):
in the desert. You should probably let him go, and
they're like, hell, yeah. We gotsome better doubles right here.

Matt (01:25:59):
They immediately say, like, okay. You can go.

Rachel (01:26:02):
Yeah.

Matt (01:26:02):
Bye bye.

Rachel (01:26:03):
Bye. You go. And so they pour oil on the floor and light
it on fire.

Matt (01:26:07):
Have a bucket outside the door.

Rachel (01:26:08):
They're like, get fire and get fire and oil. And
they're like, cool. I got itright here. So they just pour
oil on the floor, light it onfire. And it's so traumatizing.
It sends Nick back to thepresent.

Matt (01:26:19):
Out of the flashback.

Rachel (01:26:21):
And this is when he flees and the motorcycle is over
by the door, which we haven'tseen the motorcycle in, like, a
season and a half. So welcomeback, motorcycle. And he goes
directly to the Raven. Like, this is this is the best
possible you know what? I thinkhe's going there for help.
I think he's going there to findLaCroix to get help. But he goes
in, and then he freaks out alittle. And we do this top down

(01:26:44):
thing where he, like, tips hishead back and vamps out, which
is pretty cool. And then thislady walks up to him.

Matt (01:26:50):
She's totally into Nick.

Rachel (01:26:52):
Well, she goes, you look like you could use a drink. Care
to join me? And Nick is like,oh, just attacks her face.
Sensually attacks her face.Sensually, of course.
He attacks her face sensually.Sexually, all

Matt (01:27:11):
I might say. But she's digging it.

Rachel (01:27:13):
And she goes, is that a yes? And I don't think even
think he answers. It's just likeHe

Matt (01:27:18):
just growls.

Rachel (01:27:19):
Well, yeah, it is. So they go to this back room, which
I'm pretty sure is explicitlythere for making out slash sex
in.

Matt (01:27:28):
Right. There's comfy places to lay. Yeah. There's
literally a bed. Right?

Rachel (01:27:32):
No. I think there's couches.

Matt (01:27:35):
Okay.

Rachel (01:27:36):
It's the sex lounge. There's multiple options. And he

Nick (01:27:42):
is I bet there's

Matt (01:27:43):
even anchor points in the wall for kinky sex.

Rachel (01:27:46):
120% committed to making out with this woman. There is,
tits to face. There is

Matt (01:27:53):
He's just

Rachel (01:27:54):
He licks her.

Matt (01:27:55):
Mouth
it. He's just mouthing her chin.

Rachel (01:27:57):
Oh my god.

Matt (01:27:58):
Like her whole chin all the way up to her cheek.

Rachel (01:28:01):
This is another scene I do not recommend listening to
with really good headphonesbecause he goes at it so fucking
hard. There is so much slurpingsounds. At one point, he
literally makes like a it's likea suction pop sound with his
mouth. Like, he was no. Like, you know, when you open mouth,

(01:28:23):
like like, suction pop onsomebody?
Yeah. He'd we do because he'sprobably breathing in while
trying to eat her chest. I don'tknow what is happening. A lot is
happening. There is licking.
There is slurping. It is youknow, actually, this scene, I
know this scene, even though Ihaven't watched this episode
very often because this sceneshows up in Kristen's videos a

(01:28:47):
lot.

Matt (01:28:47):
Oh. Yeah.

Rachel (01:28:50):
I mean, for good reason. Jeanette, honestly. Yeah. If
this were Jeanette oh my god.Can you fucking imagine if we
got this scene with Jeanette?
If he got to show up at theRaven possessed, and he was
like, I'm pretty sure we couldshould bang. She'd be like, hell
fucking yes.

Matt (01:29:11):
I had a room built built specifically for that.

Rachel (01:29:14):
Yeah. Or as you pointed out, it's entirely possible that
Lacroix hires attractive womenspecifically with the purpose of
eventually seducing Nick?

Matt (01:29:25):
Oh, yeah. So here's what I told Rachel. There's a subset of
employees of the Raven that uponbeing hired are told, okay, this
man. See this man in thispicture here, he comes here
every once in a while. Whoevergets him to go in the back room

(01:29:48):
with you while making outwhatever Yep.
Gets a bonus.

Rachel (01:29:53):
Gets a fucking bonus. If he bangs you

Matt (01:29:57):
Extra bonus for every piece of clothing removed, plus
double the bonus if he bitesyou.

Rachel (01:30:06):
I like to think that this arrangement also applies to
beefcake booty short.

Matt (01:30:11):
Oh, absolutely. Yeah.

Rachel (01:30:13):
Yeah. Literally.

Matt (01:30:13):
The beefcake booty short was was the first.

Rachel (01:30:16):
Yeah. Yeah. And then

Matt (01:30:18):
He's the team lead.

Rachel (01:30:19):
Lacquatch shows up. Seduce Nicholas. The seduce
team, seduce Nicholas.

Matt (01:30:24):
Yes.

Rachel (01:30:24):
Well, LaCroix shows up. He is they are on the couch.
Nick is hard at this. He's goinghard at this. And so he's, like,
choking this woman.
I mean, a lot is happening, andNick, like, is making out. And
then Lacroix pops up in thebackground because Lacroix likes

(01:30:46):
to watch, and I will die on thishill. Because in his little
mental mind power link withNick, he was like, oh, shit.
Nick's about to get it on, andhe was like, oh.

Matt (01:30:59):
I'm not missing this.

Rachel (01:31:01):
I'll be over. And so he runs over, and he's like, what a
pleasant surprise to see youlike this. Nick does go a little
hard, and the woman ends upgetting scared and running off.
And Lacroix is like, my boy, youhave finally come to your

(01:31:22):
senses.

Matt (01:31:23):
I think she's not so much scared as now that Lacroix is
there, that's the end of bonusterritory.

Rachel (01:31:31):
Well, he also that, but he was, like, choking. Maybe
there he was being reallyaggressive.

Matt (01:31:35):
Maybe there's a number, another bonus multiplier if Nick
stays in it while Lacroixwatches.

Rachel (01:31:45):
Entirely possible. But I love Lacoste reaction to this.
He's like, first of all, bravo.Good choice. 2nd of all, maybe
next time, we just be a littlemore discreet because Nick goes,
you have to help me, I needhelp.
And LaCroix is like, nah. Itlooked like you were doing fine.

(01:32:09):
I don't have any real notes, andI have watched you do this,
like, a bunch. So I'm prettysure you were right on track,
but maybe next time we just, youknow, maybe we don't make out
and vamp out in the main room, and then we just wait till we
come back here. You know?
And thank you for choosinganother vampire. Excellent

(01:32:31):
decision. So I don't have toworry about cleanup. Yeah. And
Nick is like, no.
You don't understand. I was atan exorcism, and this is the
part I fucking love. It is athrowaway moment, except it's
not. Because he goes, I was atat an I was at an exorcism. It
wasn't mine.

Matt (01:32:55):
I did love that line. I was in Lacroix. I was at an
exorcism. It wasn't mine. Whichand something happened.

Rachel (01:33:05):
Which means Nick has the presence of mind, the self
awareness to realize thatLacroix is going to immediately
assume that this exorcism wasfor him. I mean, he already kind
of attended an exorcism thisseason in black wing when she
took his evil.

Matt (01:33:24):
Oh, yes.

Rachel (01:33:25):
Yeah. Yeah. So I just I fucking love that he's like, I
was at an exorcism. It wasn'tmine, but something happened,
and I think the demon went intome. And LaCroix is like, fucking
what, Nick?
Jesus Jesus h Christ, who Idon't believe in, by the way,

(01:33:49):
because I very nearly predatehim.

Matt (01:33:52):
I'm just fluent in English and its idioms.

Rachel (01:33:55):
There is absolutely no way that that is true. I don't
why are you even why are youharshing my mellow right now?
Dude, I thought we were about toget it on. I have not watched
you had sex, and I can't eventell you how long. I was so
excited.
And now this is where we're at.This is terrible. I am
absolutely losing my heart onright now. And Nick is like, you
don't understand. You have totake me to the Exorcist.

(01:34:16):
I need your help. And Laquaza islike, I'm not taking you fucking
anywhere. Look me in the eye,Nick. I'm not taking you fucking
anywhere. And then

Matt (01:34:25):
Transition to the exercise.

Rachel (01:34:26):
Wait. Then Nick tries to choke LaCroix for a minute. He's
like, you will take me. And helikes and then he pauses, and
he's like, you please help me.And look, why can't say no to
that face.
He makes the face. He's like, please, please, LaCroix, could
you take me to the Exorcist? AndLaCroix is like, fucking fine.

Nick (01:34:52):
Please help me in the claw. Please.

Matt (01:35:01):
So so my first thought was, is there a vampire
exorcist? Like No. Is thereanother exorcist that's, like,
aware of the vampire world thatLacroix would know about? But,
no, they just mean Vanderwaal.

Rachel (01:35:17):
Vanderwaal. Yep. So since Nick made the compelling
argument of, sad eyes, it waslike, alright. Fucking fine. So
he takes him to VanderWaals, andVanderWaals is like, oh, okay.
Yeah. Secondary infection. Yeah. That can happen. It must have

(01:35:39):
had some he must have had anopen wound.
That's how that that's how thebacteria the evil bacteria
usually spreads. You must havesome inner turmoil to open the
door. And Lacroix is like, Idon't I don't fucking care. Can
you just do whatever you need todo to get this done? And he
goes, you don't believe me, doyou?
And, like, while literally islike, I actually don't give even

(01:36:01):
a small amount of shit, but I amhere for Nicholas. And so he
looks over at Laquette Nicholas. And Nick does this, like

Matt (01:36:13):
so this is the start of the really uncomfortable

Rachel (01:36:17):
scene. It's like and then he goes, are you Nicholas?
And Nick goes, yes. He's real, real convincing and vendor go
vendor wall goes, why don't Ibelieve you? Why could they give
a couple of reasons?

(01:36:40):
And this is when we start usingthe flashback and the present
time, like, real fast, like, flip, flip, flip, flip, flip.
Because we go back to theflashback, and they're being
driven back by the fire. Andthen all of a sudden, we're back
in the present, and Nick is all,I'm evil. I'm the son of
Billiel.

Nick (01:37:00):
I'm the son of Billiel.

Rachel (01:37:05):
And Vanderweel's like, oh, shit. The evil of him is
very powerful. I need you tohelp. And he looks back at
Laquan. Laquan's like, hardpass.
He goes, well, you came herelike you're here. Are you wait a
minute. Are you the oneresponsible for his turmoil?

Matt (01:37:28):
Leclerc is a 100% responsible for Nick's turmoil.

Rachel (01:37:34):
Matt goes actually, Matt, we're watching it. Matt
goes, he is a 1000% responsiblefor Matt's for Nick's turmoil.
1000%. Every drop of turmoil hasLaCroix's like, signature on it.
He is the ultimate troll.
He has been trolling Nick. Hehas been trolling Nick for 800
years. Every piece of turmoil ishis, And Lacroix is like, can

(01:37:55):
you just fucking help him? Like, don't look at me like that.
Jesus.
Okay? Everybody needs a hobby. And the guy's like, I need your
help. I can't do this alone. AndLaquale looks over at the cross,
and he does this like, I can't.
Like, I would love to help you.I am physic like like, that
small amount of weakness. Youknow how much that must rankle?

(01:38:18):
Okay. To continue our Star Warsanalogy from beforehand, when he
became a vampire, the cross wasnot a prevalent symbol, which
means at a certain point in hislife, they started showing up,
and they just hurt for nofucking reason.
Right. It would literally belike all

Matt (01:38:37):
of a sudden there when Star Wars the story came out.
Yeah. And then And

Rachel (01:38:42):
then you see a rebel symbol slump one day, and it
fucking burns you. And you'relike, shit. What? The what? That
is not what?
And then all of a sudden, peopleare wearing it on chains around
their neck and getting tattoosof it and shit. And you're like,
oh my god. It's everywhere, andit hurts, and I don't know why.
Tattoos of it and shit, andyou're like, oh my god. It's
everywhere, and it hurts, and Idon't know why.
And you can tell he is like, hedidn't like it.

Matt (01:39:03):
Oh, yeah. It it gets under his skin.

Rachel (01:39:06):
Yeah. He's like, I can't. And then VanderWaal's
like, oh, come on. Just helphim. You can do it.
And this is when Gare vamps out.I'm sorry. Nick vamps out. Nick
is like, he goes, Nick isalready lost is what he says.
He's like, we're losing him.
And Nick is like, ah, I'malready lost. Look at my teeth.

(01:39:30):
And then he's like, I belong toBelial now or, you know, Nick
belongs to me, but I'm his I'mhis boss now. And Lacroix is
like, oh, hell no. Oh, fuckingno.
I have not put in the work foryou to show up 24 hours ago and
feel like you already own thisdude when I have been working

(01:39:51):
for 800 years to get him on myside. There is absolutely no way
I am letting him have it, and sohe gets extremely triggered. He,
like, leans forward, and he'slike, no. He is mine. He is my
creation.
I fucking own him. AndVanderwaal's like, okay. Cool.
So you're, like, both like this? And the clause like, yes.

(01:40:15):
Yes. We're both like this. AndVanderWaals goes, well, of
course you don't want him tobelieve, then you'd have to
admit that the devil is real. And Claude's like, I don't
fucking care if the devil isreal. And he actually gets 2
crosses and he's gonna he puts 1at Nick's feet and then he's
walking around to put 1 byNick's head and Lacroix like

(01:40:36):
ducks really fast out of the wayof the cross, and VanderWaal
goes, oh, excuse me.

Matt (01:40:44):
And then he leans over Nick. VanderWaals just plays it
chill.

Rachel (01:40:47):
He's like, alright. I'm gonna roll with this.

Matt (01:40:50):
He's a professional.

Rachel (01:40:51):
He's profesh. Okay. And then until he leans forward and
Nick just breaks his chains andstarts choking with him, and
Lacroix is like, drop it.

Matt (01:41:01):
Drop it. No. Bad boy. Put it down.

Rachel (01:41:05):
Bad boy. Drop it. And then he starts laughing. Nick
lets him go, but then he'slaughing, and he's like, you
have no power over me. Well, youlet him go.
So kinda think you do. And thenwe get, like, uh-oh. Natalie's
about to be involved. BecauseNatalie shows up at Nick's
house, and she's like, Nick, areyou

Matt (01:41:23):
And she sees the mess.

Rachel (01:41:25):
Matt was like,

Matt (01:41:26):
oh, my wife's been mad.

Rachel (01:41:27):
When the glass

Matt (01:41:28):
when the glass bottles were flying around, I was like,
oh, no. What will the wife say?And then Natalie showed up, and
I was like, oh, look what lifethe wife's gonna say.

Rachel (01:41:38):
Well, Natalie at least is worried. She's like, oh, no.
This is out of character. And wego back to the exorcism, which
is still going on. It's like 45minutes of a 48 minute episode.
Stupid. That and making out. That's this whole episode. But
VanderWaal asks, like, why thisone? Why did you choose Nick?
And so Belial, I guess, is inhis literal inner demon. It's

(01:42:02):
like, de Brabant has had hasbeen so many people, and all of
them murderers. They're allinside here, held back by his
conscience. He's got realpotential, and I'm gonna develop
it. Like we're going to, we'regoing to do it's got the boss.

(01:42:22):
We I'm going to got the boss, this dude, and we're, we're
going to take over the worldtogether. And then Natalie has
called Tracy, meanwhile.Everything's happening really
fast, which is nice because itkeeps the pace moving really
fast, and it makes this end feelreally frantic. So we're really
hopping, and they must not havehad enough flashback to do all
of the hops, and that's why weget Natalie. Because Tracy calls

(01:42:44):
Natalie, and Tracy's like, Idon't know where he is.
Maybe he stopped at thedrugstore on the way home. He
wasn't looking great. He lookedreally pale. Or as Reese says,
I've never seen anyone look thatpale. And Natalie is like, yeah.
Maybe he stopped at thedrugstore knowing full fucking
well Nick has never been in adrugstore in his life.

Matt (01:43:03):
Except to buy flowers.

Rachel (01:43:05):
Oh, and with affection covers.

Matt (01:43:07):
Affection.

Rachel (01:43:07):
Yeah. And Tracy's like, well, you know, we had a really
complicated day, but it's a lotto talk about on the phone. So I
don't think I'm gonna get intoit. And Natalie goes, give me
the highlights of what happened. And then we go back to the

Matt (01:43:22):
She says, oh, sorry. Let me summarize that for you.

Rachel (01:43:27):
So we go back to the exorcism because VanderWaal is
actually gonna start he's donewith the interrogation portion
of the exorcism, and we're on tothe actual exorcism. And we this
is when we do the fish eye lenson Gare's face, and he's, like,
screaming at the camera. And wego immediately back into a
flashback of Lacroix and Nick,And they end up hot like,

(01:43:49):
holding onto each other andhopping over the fire. And then
because, of course, they'vegotten backed into the corner
with the oil and fire. And thenwe come back, and Belial's like,
I have revived the vampire'staste for death.
I will be with him forever. Weare gonna do great things
together. And then we go back tothe flashback because we're

(01:44:09):
flip, flip, flip really fasthere. And, this I really like
this scene. I'm gonna summarizethe flashback so we don't have
to keep going back and forth.
But what happens right up untilthe, like, dramatic conclusion,
which kind of gives us our thisis how love love conquers all.
That's how Nick was able todefeat the defeat the the demon.

(01:44:32):
But the thing I like about thisflashback, this moment right
here, is they end up jumpingover the fire, but there's
still, like, a fire on one side, priest with cross on the other
side. The sun is still upbecause it's been day for 28
hours. A lot has happened.
And they're, like, hunched downtogether, and Nick reaches out
and takes Lacroix's hand.

Matt (01:44:53):
An intimate moment.

Rachel (01:44:54):
Did you notice that?

Matt (01:44:56):
I did not.

Rachel (01:44:57):
And it's a very, like, I think we could actually be
friends if you would quit beingsuch an asshole. They are the
only people on this rafttraveling through eternity
together, and it sucks. It'slike in I just read war of the
world, and there's a scene wherehe's with there's a whole
section where the narrator iswith this guy named the curate,

(01:45:19):
and he says it's justunfortunate because our
personalities were extremelyincompatible. So they're stuck
together. They work together.
They do stuff together, butthey're just not close enough in
temperament to be able to befriends. But I think Lacroix and
Nick could be friends. They'rejust stuck. Lacroix can't meet

(01:45:41):
anyone in the middle. He flatout fucking refuses, And Nick
doesn't know how to get toLacroix without becoming the
type of person that he doesn'twanna be.
And yet, when they're in thismoment where they're about to
die, Nick reaches out and takesLaCroix's hand. It was just a

(01:46:02):
really sweet moment, and Ialways like this moment. That's
why I like this flashback eventhough this whole section is
difficult to take. And Laquon isactually holding Nick down at
this point in the present time, and he's like, fight, Nicholas.
And the demon looks up atLaCroix, and he's like, you're
one of us, LaCroix.

(01:46:24):
You're a demon just like us,and, look, Lacroix is not
receiving this. You can't insultLacroix by being like, you're
evil. He's like, fucking noted.Thanks. Already knew that.
Is that news? Oh, I'm sorry.

Matt (01:46:38):
That's an understatement.

Rachel (01:46:39):
Yeah. You don't know that fucking half of it. When he
yells at Nick, he goes and thismust hurt him on, like, a a soul
level because he goes, there isgood in you, Nicholas.

Matt (01:46:55):
This is how desperate Lacroix is.

Rachel (01:46:57):
There is god in you. Use it.

Nick (01:47:01):
You were one of us. He hoped for long trace.

Rachel (01:47:05):
Listen to me, Nicholas. You must fight this team.

Nick (01:47:09):
There is goodness in you.

Rachel (01:47:11):
There is God in you, sir. In the nominated

Matt (01:47:14):
Do you

Rachel (01:47:14):
know what that cost him to be like, you are actually a
really good guy? He must havethrown up a little on his mouth.
There is good in you, Nick. Useit. And then we come back, and
VanderWaal is like, okay.
Well, I cast thee out. I'm done.Like, LaCroix got you pinned.

(01:47:38):
I've said all the Latin. I'vesprayed you with whatever.
I cast the out right at themoment that Natalie arrives
because Natalie's like, oh, youwent to Vanderwalls? Cool. I'm a
go right over there. So shecomes over, and Nick launches
out of bed and, like, grabs her.And there's a lot of hissing and
growling.
And, like, is he gonna bite her?Is he not going to bite her?

(01:48:00):
Because he is at war withhimself, and he ends up throwing
himself away from her. And thenhe sits up with a normal face.
Like

Matt (01:48:10):
This is just like the Duncan Idaho scene. To bring
back children.

Rachel (01:48:20):
Children of doom? Okay. Where he's he's been triggered
with

Matt (01:48:25):
his He's the Duncan Gola Duncan Idaho zombie Yeah. That
doesn't have access to originalDuncan's memories and the
compulsion to kill Paul. Andthen he's in the act of stabbing
Paul in the back, and, originally, Duncan comes back.

Rachel (01:48:46):
Yeah. Now was it the love of Natalie or the love of
Lacroix that brought Nick back?

Matt (01:48:53):
Oh, Natalie. Because Lacroix was, like, in his face,
and he was thrashing. But thenas soon as he gets face to face
with Natalie, he throws himselfaway and regains control.

Rachel (01:49:06):
But would he have been able to do it if Lacroix had not
admitted that there was good inNick?

Matt (01:49:12):
Probably not. He needed he needed both sides.

Rachel (01:49:15):
Yeah. He needed all of his found family slash made
family slash fucking let you go.

Matt (01:49:20):
How much of a Travis tragedy? Sacrifice? Yes. He's
aware of how bad things must beif Lacroix is willing to call
out to the good in him. Sothat's the thing he's running
away from.
And then there's Natalie Yeah.Which he's ostensibly pursuing.

Rachel (01:49:46):
Yeah. In love with.

Matt (01:49:48):
And so he he has he has a thing he's running away from. He
has a thing he's runningtowards, and having both of
those things is, like, doublemotivation. Yeah. Yeah. And he
just barely makes it out.

Rachel (01:50:06):
I do feel for Natalie's, oh my god, Nick. What happened?
Because she walked in. He ranover, grabbed her face, almost
bit her, and she's like, oh god.No, Nick.
Don't do it. And then he flopsback on the table, sits up, and
she's like, oh my god, Nick. Areyou okay? Girl, he just grabbed
your face. Take a minute.

(01:50:28):
Make sure he's not gonna do thatagain. Don't run over there.

Matt (01:50:31):
Those things can come back out real quick.

Rachel (01:50:34):
Yeah. Well, van der Waal goes, for the devil to be driven
out, you had to have believedthat God had not abandoned you.
Okay. I'm pretty sure Godspecifically told him he
abandoned him in the near deathepisode. He was like, see your
soul right there, the oneinfested with maggots?

(01:50:54):
Yeah. That's all on you. Do youreally think that you can do
enough good to make up for allthe evil you've done? I don't
fucking think so. So we had awhole episode where they were
like, you damned.
So you might as well stay alivebecause

Matt (01:51:08):
And your soul is damned.

Rachel (01:51:11):
Yeah. Oh, but there it got better.

Matt (01:51:16):
It got a

Rachel (01:51:17):
little bit better.

Matt (01:51:17):
There's a chance. Yeah. So you're saying

Rachel (01:51:20):
there's a chance? There's a chance. And Vanderwall
tries to have a heart to heartwith Lacroix. He's like, that
was a really sweet thing yousaid to your friend. And Lacroix
is like Lacroix literally looksat a bump bump.
This never happened. But we getthe conclusion of the flashback,
which the conclusion of the soLacroix saying there is good in

(01:51:43):
you, him being able to not killNatalie, and then 3 things that
all kind of culminate into himbeing able to beat the devil
beat the devil out of himself. So he goes back to the flat the
flashback, and it's right on themoment when they're about to
die. They're about to be burnedto death, and something happens.

(01:52:04):
Somebody comes up behind thepriest and knocks them out.
And so they actually Sancho, theguy that they got out earlier,
came back and rescued them eventhough he knew they were not
human.

Nick (01:52:17):
Mhmm.

Rachel (01:52:18):
And Sancho was like, I don't know what you are, but you
did a good thing by getting meout, so you have to be good. And
was like, that doesn't make anyfucking sense, and it's wildly
inaccurate. The only So we goback. We're done. We wrap all

(01:52:42):
that up.
We get our happy conclusion tothe flashback where it's like,
Nick realized that there arepeople out there who could know
what he was and not see him asthe devil and that he could
resist killing Natalie and thatLacroix does know that he is
fundamentally a good guy. Hejust can't admit it because he

(01:53:05):
would have to admit that thatmeans good and evil exists and
that he is on one end of thosespectrums, and it's not the one
that Nick is on. So Nick andNatalie are back at his
apartment because Nick took theday off, and so she stops in on
her way to work. And she's like,do you want me to stay? Like, we
could watch popcorn.
I could put on my shirt. Wecould do some season one things.

(01:53:26):
And he's like, no. I don't Iwant you to go. And she goes,
you know, you beat the devil.
That's not bad for a day's work.And he says

Matt (01:53:36):
Hold on. Hold on. Did he beat the devil? Or did she beat
the devil out of it?

Rachel (01:53:44):
That's what I can look at. We just said Bob said it.
Too soon. It's too soon afternight in question. Okay?

Matt (01:53:52):
Oh, no. No. No. I I was just going for a Bob Ross quote.

Rachel (01:53:55):
Or as I said, don't be clumped, Chubb. Have some cum.

Matt (01:54:05):
One of

Rachel (01:54:05):
my better lines. Alright. So join the Patreon.
You'll know exactly what I'mtalking about, cause you'll get
to be in the discord and you'llget to chat with me and know
just how unhinged I actually am.So Nick says you can't imagine
what it's like.
You can't imagine what it's liketo be actually possessed by the
devil. Natalie goes, maybe not,but we all have our demons. And

(01:54:28):
this is another feeling, like, consistency thing that we have
with Natalie that is alwaysconsistent, Like, when Tracy was
like, I have an uncle who'sgoing to die imminently because
of heart disease. And Tracygoes, I know what you mean. I

(01:54:50):
have elective surgery on my kneethat I haven't done for about a
year, but I think I'm gonna getit done soon.
These two things are equal. These two things are not equal.
But in Natalie's mind, these twothings are equal. So Natalie is
Natalie is like, I know you werepossessed by an actual demon.
You almost had sex with anothervampire woman.
You almost killed a priest. Youalmost killed me. But, hey. We

(01:55:14):
all all lives are equal. Alllives matter.
And Nick is like, fucking no.You have no idea what I'm
talking about, and he vamps out.He doesn't actually get fangs.
He just changes his eyes. And heturns back to her, and she's
like, oh, flashback.
She goes, don't do that. Like, don't do that to me. And, he

(01:55:38):
admits that his thirst is back.

Matt (01:55:40):
Right. He's testing his hunger.

Rachel (01:55:43):
He's testing himself. He's like, I think what happened
set us back. I think it set usback.

Matt (01:55:48):
What he said first, he says, it set me back. And then
he says, it set us back, whichis a pretty loaded statement to
make

Rachel (01:55:59):
Yeah.

Matt (01:56:01):
To the woman you just maybe

Rachel (01:56:05):
Maybe banged?

Matt (01:56:07):
Maybe banged.

Rachel (01:56:09):
Yeah. And she's like, what do you mean? He goes, I
haven't felt thirst like this ina long time. I'm I'm a thirsty
boy now.

Matt (01:56:17):
What's a bang without a fang?

Rachel (01:56:22):
Can you have a bang with fangs? These are all questions.

Matt (01:56:25):
If you're
a vampire, it's it's necessary according to the
Garrett Wayne Davies playgirlinterview.

Rachel (01:56:33):
Yes. And then Lacroix

Matt (01:56:35):
vampire mythology.

Rachel (01:56:36):
Lacroix, in order to cleanse himself from this
feeling of altruism, quotesscripture, or he may quote
paradise lost, but it's aboutthe sons of Belial or whatever.
And then he's like, paradiselost. And then that's the end of
the episode. Nick got possessed. He got LaCroix to help him.

(01:57:00):
LaCroix had to make compromiseshe wasn't comfortable making.
And then Nick got better. Andnow he might actually be we're
not gonna talk about it anymore,so it doesn't really like, we're
never ever ever gonna mentionthat he somehow got worse
because he got possessed by ademon. I hope you all enjoyed
that because it's gonnadisappear into the wings now. I

(01:57:23):
wish we had I mean, that wouldhave been I feel like so I think
Meg and I talked about this, thevamping out with Meg episode.
But when you say you're avampire fan, there's this
connotation that generally popsup, which is, I like weird
things and kinky sex, and I'm agoth, and there's this, like,

(01:57:43):
vampire fan, and you could justslot all of these preconceptions
into it. And some of them areright. Some of them are not
right. I feel like there'sseveral camps of vampire fans.
It's not a blanket statement.
There's people who like horrorvampires. Like, I'm never gonna
watch 30 days of night. I'm justnot interested in it. I like
vampires a lot. I hate horrorvampires.

(01:58:05):
I also will read romance novelvampires only because it's the
only thing that is not horrorvampires that's available to
read. But there's this middleground of vampirism as metaphor
for difference.

Matt (01:58:21):
For being othered?

Rachel (01:58:22):
For being othered. And that is, like, the, fucking
sweet spot. But in order to dothat, you can have no cheating.
So forever night kinda walks theline and that Nick drinks cow
blood. It's okay.
I Nick

Matt (01:58:44):
But they I think it kind of consistently conveys that,
yes, Nick is drinking cow blood, but there are downsides to that.
He's there's somethingfundamental to vampire nature
that is not getting satisfied bythe cow blood.

Rachel (01:59:05):
Right.

Matt (01:59:05):
It's just it's like you can't eat any, like, tasty food.
You can only eat, like, thisgray slop. Yeah.
That
has yes. It has all the calories and nutrients and, you
know, protein and all the itcovers your macros. Yeah. But

(01:59:30):
But it's

Rachel (01:59:31):
not actual food.

Matt (01:59:32):
There's a whole other dimension of, like, taste and,
like, consumption of food anddrink that is, like, a huge
component to human experience.

Rachel (01:59:51):
Yeah.

Matt (01:59:51):
And if all you could eat was gruel for every meal every
day, there's a whole, like, chunk of your potential lived
experience that you're missingout on. Yeah. And we don't do it

(02:00:12):
a lot. But every once in awhile, we hit on yeah. Nick is,
like, the vampire equivalent of,like, asceticism.
Like Yeah.

Rachel (02:00:24):
I he's He's a stoic.

Matt (02:00:26):
He's depriving himself of this positive experience.

Rachel (02:00:32):
He's he's depriving himself of how vampires feel
life. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. And thatis no other vampire property has
ever really touched on that inthe way that Forever Knight
does, which is, I think, why ithas the lasting power it does
for people who like that sweetspot of vampire mythology.

Matt (02:00:56):
Mhmm.

Rachel (02:00:56):
I mean, you get Vampire Diaries, but the first little
part of Vampire Diaries is kindof like that. But after a while,
everybody's a vampire or a witchor a werewolf or a whatever, and
you're like, okay. Ifeverybody's special, nobody is.
Well, now I've completely lostmy interest in this. And it
brings me back to that textbookor that book that that lady
wrote about the inherentqueerness of of horror and how I

(02:01:21):
really wanna get that textbookand or that book.
I think it's a textbook, butit's like a book textbook,
whatever, and read it because, yes, the idea of otherness, the
idea of the thing that you areis perceived as evil by other
people, but you do not perceiveyourself as evil is inherently
queer narrative, especially inthe world that we live in right

(02:01:42):
now where people who aredifferent are seen as morally
bankrupt in some way.

Matt (02:01:50):
Right.

Rachel (02:01:50):
As opposed to just I have a different lifestyle from
you, not requiring you to livemy lifestyle. I it has nothing
to do with you. It is about meliving my authentic life. And
yet what happens when yourauthentic life is something you
cannot live openly because ofthe constraints of society or

(02:02:11):
because being an authenticperson means you straight up
murder people, and that's notthe one that

Matt (02:02:15):
I have to take off of off my I am a Kannuff hoodie before
I go get my oil changed.

Rachel (02:02:23):
Correct.

Matt (02:02:23):
Yeah.

Rachel (02:02:24):
Exactly. And that is the story I like to hear about. That
is what I that is what I am herefor with vampirism is, like,
vampirism as metaphor for beingothered. Because and I think
that that is a place that wecould mine a lot of good stories
from right now.

Matt (02:02:43):
That's, like, mythological, like, archetypal
level narrative.

Rachel (02:02:51):
Right. And I think it's a place that it's needed right
now because there are a lot ofpeople who do feel othered, who
do feel like they have to hidewho they are. And how can if you
can't explore that explicitly, then you need to explore that
metaphorically or implicitly.

Matt (02:03:09):
Right.

Rachel (02:03:10):
You need to have these stories about monsters who are
not monsters, who are onlymonsters because of what society
perceives them as being. And Ijust finished reading
Frankenstein, and maybe that'swhy I'm, like, waxing
metaphorical about it. And I'mstill figuring out how I feel
about Frankenstein. Like, I knowwhat we're supposed to get from

(02:03:30):
it is that Frankenstein is thebad guy and that the monster was
only a bad guy becauseFrankenstein never took
responsibility for his actions, sort of. But at the same time,
I'm like, I need this time withthis because it's so sad, and
everybody's sad, and nobody'sgood.
And it's just like, I don't knowwhat I was supposed to learn.

(02:03:54):
And I think that's why even withall of its flaws, I really like
forever night because it doestry to be clear for the most
part about who the good guys andthe bad guys are. Mhmm. So, yes,
Nick is othered. Yes.
Nick is not able to be himselfbecause of societal restraints,
but Nick is trying to be a goodguy. And we know for sure he is

(02:04:16):
trying to be a good guy. Andsometimes he throws people off
of walkways, and sometimes hekills people not with his teeth.
But, ultimately, he is trying tobe good.

Matt (02:04:29):
It's always a reactionary.

Rachel (02:04:31):
Right.

Matt (02:04:32):
Death.

Rachel (02:04:32):
He's never like, I'm setting out to kill somebody
today because today feels like agood day to kill somebody.

Matt (02:04:38):
Right.

Rachel (02:04:38):
And the push and pull between wanting to be himself, I
think it's like the metaphor forwanting to be human is, like, he
wants to be able to be himself

Matt (02:04:50):
with people. Mhmm.

Rachel (02:04:51):
Because right now, he can't be himself. He has to be
who people want him to bebecause it's part of how you
survive as a vampire when youwanna be a part of the human
world. And he's not willing togive up the human world, which
means the only way to beauthentically himself and still
be a hue in the human world isto be human.

Nick (02:05:09):
Mhmm.

Rachel (02:05:10):
And so I think, ultimately, what Nick is
striving for is authenticity inhis life. And I think that's a
theme that resonates stronglyand timelessly no matter how
timely the show itself feels. And I wish somebody would pick

(02:05:30):
up on that and give us anothershow like this. Why has there
only why? I this is what I don'tunderstand.
Why are there not stories inthis niche? Why where are they?
They're either, I'm a 500 yearold dude, and I'm fucking this
18 year old woman that I or thisgirl, this 18 year old girl that

(02:05:52):
I am inexplicably drawn to. Andshe's, like, really mature, so
it's totally fucking okay. Orthere's horror vampires like
Salem's Lot, or there's I amliterature vampires.
They're like, I am literature. Iam so literature that I'm not

(02:06:13):
even really a vampire. I'm justholy metaphor. And it's like,
no. I want something right inbetween literature and romance
where it's like real peopledoing real stuff living in the
real world while having to dealwith this one thing that makes
them different.

(02:06:34):
If you have a book that's likethat, tell me about it, and I
will read it. Okay? I willfucking read that tomorrow. Matt
knows. Every once in a while,I'll just be sitting on the
couch looking through TV showsand movies, and he's like, what
are you looking for?
And I'm like, I'm looking for agood vampire movie, or I'm
looking for a good vampire TVshow. And do you know how often

(02:06:55):
I find them? Fucking never. Andyet here I am. I know you're
just looking at me like, thankyou for that rant.
And I just wanna say thank youfor sitting there and letting me
get all that out.

Matt (02:07:06):
You're welcome.

Rachel (02:07:07):
I needed to get that out. It's just a consistent
complaint of me and lots of thepeople that I know where it's
like, this is what we want, andno one is giving it to us. No
one is writing this, and I don'tknow why. Because it's a good
story. This is a good story.
Forever night is a good story. Why did we only tell it once?

(02:07:33):
Moonlight does not count. Ithink that's a question we all
need to ask. And if we knew theanswer, maybe we'd

Nick (02:07:40):
know a

Matt (02:07:40):
lot more about life.

Rachel (02:07:41):
Yeah. I guess we'll just leave it there. Until next

Matt (02:07:45):
time, friends.

Rachel (02:07:46):
Bye. Bye.

Nick (02:07:57):
Really, Nicholas, such crass showmanship?
