Nick (00:00):
Matter where she is right
now. She's online with this
game, and the only place she'sgonna slip up is in the game.
Reese (00:04):
Oh, yeah. And she's in
there dropping little bread
crumbs for you?
Nick (00:08):
Virtual clues. Yeah.
Virtual clues. Captain, each
virtual clue leads me to a realclue. And every time I move up a
level, something brings mecloser to a real piece of
evidence that's going to convicther.
But there's a clock on this.Time's running out. I need to
get to the next level. You areon
Reese (00:23):
the next level if you ask
me.
Tracy (00:25):
Hi. I'm Rachel.
Matt (00:26):
And I'm Matt. And this is
Tracy (00:28):
Come in 81 kilo.
Matt (00:30):
A forever night podcast.
Tracy (01:22):
Although, I honestly
don't need that to sound garbled
this time. I don't know. Theylinger. I can't help it. And if
I waited until my voice was allthe way back, we'd never record
another episode.
So here we are. And by here weare, I mean, forever night
season 3 episode 15, gamesvampires play.
Matt (01:45):
This is another one that
I've I people keep throwing the
name out. Oh. Oh, you're almostat games that vampire play on on
the discord. But then nobodytalks about it because I haven't
seen it yet.
Tracy (01:59):
Yeah. The discord was a
Twitter about this one because
we all knew you would like itbecause it's the nineties, oh,
technology is scary episode.
Matt (02:09):
I feel like Video games
are addictive, and they promote
violent tendencies.
Tracy (02:14):
Especially if you're
already a vampire and you're
like, oh, I get to kill peoplewith impunity. I feel like this
was as regular as the NativeAmerican Mysticism episode was
the, oh, let's create thismystical future technology and
extrapolate how it's gonna fuckwith all of us and make us into
(02:34):
murderers. Hell, yeah. This waslike it just happened, you know.
It was like a thing.
It was like the body swapepisode.
Matt (02:42):
Yeah. Yeah.
Tracy (02:44):
And here it is.
Matt (02:46):
When when do we get the
body swap episode?
Tracy (02:50):
I mean, we don't. But we
get, like, universe swap because
we get curiouser and curiouser. And we also got the amnesia
episode, which was night inquestion. Yeah. We don't really
get a body swap episode onaccount of, oh, maybe Sons of
Billiell was kind of like thebody swap episode.
Matt (03:06):
I guess.
Tracy (03:07):
The I have given my my
body over to another entity.
Matt (03:11):
Yeah. My body is being
used by something else.
Tracy (03:13):
I forgot how chaotic the
second half of season 3 is
because we got sons of Billiowhere he, like, goes on a
murderous rampage, kind of. Andthen he, like, makes out with
the lady's tits and asks forLacroix's help. And then we got
night in question where heforgot about his past
(03:35):
completely. And then when hedoes remember even a little bit,
he goes and, like, flies off andkills a guy. And then we got the
fever episode, which we didn'teven talk about the fact that
Screed, the guy who passed awayin the episode
Matt (03:50):
Oh, yeah. For
representation.
Tracy (03:52):
Who's played by Greg
Kramer, is, like, one of the
only openly gay actors who wasworking on this show. And he's
the one who dies of vampire, notAIDS.
Matt (04:04):
And wasn't the actor HIV
positive?
Tracy (04:06):
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And he
died kind of under mysterious
circumstances. He was found deadin his apartment.
Matt (04:13):
The actor was?
Tracy (04:14):
Yeah. Because he was,
like, a playwright. He was a
poet. He did a lot of stuff. Imean, he was a very active in
the theater community guy.
And I think in 2014, he wasputting on a new play, and right
before it premiered, he wasfound dead in his apartment.
Just like we mentioned, theother guy with a Cockney accent,
Danny, Danny the kid from thefirst season, he was also found
(04:37):
dead under mysteriouscircumstances. So I don't know
if you had a Cockney accentforever night. Just be aware
that it's a thing that happened. And apparently, he had no idea
what what Screed was saying.
Like, Screed's dialogue waswritten out for him, and he had
to perform it word for word andwas not allowed to adlib. And he
was like, I don't know what thefuck
Reese (04:58):
screen is saying.
Matt (04:58):
My head canon was that
this actor was just completely
off the wall and adlibbed all ofScreamflies.
Tracy (05:04):
No. Those were given to
him and he was not allowed to ad
lib them. And he was, like, whatyou see on the screen is an
actor just doing his best.
Matt (05:15):
I mean, he pulled it off.
Tracy (05:16):
Can you imagine you get,
like you know, you're trying to
make it. You get a part in atelevision show.
Matt (05:21):
You show up British
accent.
Tracy (05:23):
You show up and they're
like, you're the bald guy that
lives in the sewers and yousound like this. You're like,
I'm sorry. What? What? And,apparently, he shaved his head
for something else, so so theyjust kept it.
And then that little hat hewears
Matt (05:36):
Mhmm.
Tracy (05:36):
Is a thing that, like, he
brought that with him. That's
his thing.
Matt (05:40):
Oh, that was Greg's thing.
Tracy (05:41):
He wore it because in
another play, he used it to
protect his head because therewas a scene where he got, like,
fire shot at him or something. So he wore this leather cap. And
so he just brought it, and theywere like, yeah. Sure. Go with
it.
So the only parts of Screed thatare him are the bald head and
the little hat, the littleleather hat that he wears.
Everything else was like, okay.Hear me out. You're the vampire
(06:05):
that only eats rats. I'm sorry.
I'm what? I get to be a you'relike, oh, yeah. I get to be a
vampire. I get to be like BradPitt or Tom Cruise. I get to be
like, oh, sexy vampire.
And they're like, no. You're theyou're the rat sewer guy. Oh,
and you're gonna die in episode13. I'm what? After you get to
be in, like, 4 other episodes.
(06:26):
Anyway, I was remiss in notdiscussing the fact that Greg
Kramer, the guy who dies in theAIDS awareness episode, It was
the only openly gay. Oh, I don'tknow if he was the only, but he
was one of the only openly gayactors on the show at the time.
I'm just gonna put that rightthere on the table, and I'm just
(06:47):
gonna let you guys, you know, think about those things. You
kinda gotta remember, like, theInternet wasn't I mean, the
Internet was there, but itwasn't as all pervasive as we
discussed in this episode thatwe're about to talk about. Mhmm.
So there was not the, everpresent awareness of all actors'
lives and sexual orientation.
Matt (07:07):
It was just the tabloids.
Tracy (07:09):
Yeah. It would have
popped up somewhere, and you
might have caught it. You mightnot have. Maybe it came through
on the, email listserv. Yeah.
The 4 night l 4th night l. Itwas the the way that fans would
keep in contact, I gather. Andit was like an email listserv
that you signed up for. And thiswas a thing where you emailed
(07:31):
the listserv address and itwould go out to everyone who was
signed up. And you could eitherget individual emails, which
probably at the height of it,you didn't wanna do because that
was probably a lot.
Or you could get digests whereit would compile them and it
would send them out. And theywould have fan fiction wars.
They would have all kinds ofstuff on this thing. And I
actually foul Meg found and sentto me this really old graphic
(07:54):
where it was like, you know, you're on the fork night, like.
Matt (07:58):
Oh, like a meme?
Tracy (07:59):
Yeah. Like, somebody made
a list of, like, oh, here here
we are. Like, here's the oh, andI I wanna read it because there
was one on there that I reallyfelt spoke to us as podcasters.
And I thought, you know, one ofthe thing about being a part of
a, being the part of a fandomthat is as old as this is you
have to be aware of there isdecades of fan culture behind
(08:24):
you and sometimes it pops up andit's like, wow, these people
were my age when they were doingthis And they were just as into
this as I was. And it's kind ofcool to see how fans gathered
and identified themselves anddiscussed things before you
could go to, like, for you couldgo to the the Facebook forever
(08:47):
night page and join there.
That wasn't a thing. You had tofind another place to
congregate. And I first of all,I love this list service is
still active and it is stillavailable and you can still sign
up for it. And I'm a member andI get an email, like, once a
month. And I just in my headcanon, this is hosted on a
server at Pennsylvania StateUniversity.
Reese (09:09):
Mhmm.
Tracy (09:10):
And there are no
archives. It saves nothing. It
is a tidy piece of code thatjust redirects emails. And in my
mind, it is buried so deep. Theyjust don't know it's still
there.
And every time they get a newserver, they just image the
server and put the image on thenew server, and it brings the
code with it without anybodyknowing it's in there. This this
(09:33):
is my Yeah. Do not do notcorrect me.
Matt (09:36):
It's you're not you're not
wrong. Yeah. So listservs are
they've just been aroundforever. It was like a really it
still is a really popular wayfor groups of people to
communicate, with each other, like, back and forth in a way
(09:58):
that's visible to other membersof the community. And you can,
like, tag things, and you can itit gets a little more
complicated, like, subscribeyour feed to specific tags.
But, my exposure has been, like, the Linux kernel listserv or
(10:23):
specific Linux related projectsor communities, listservs. And I
think that's how they started. But the listserv is a service
that runs on a computer
Tracy (10:40):
Yeah.
Matt (10:41):
In at at this school. And
that listserv server has a whole
bunch of listservs that ithosts. And you can have a, like,
redundancy set up where there'smultiple instances of this
listserv at different places.
Tracy (11:00):
Right.
Matt (11:01):
And you can have it
archive things, or you can like,
for a digest, it has to archivethings for, like, the last month
or something. It just doesn'tpreserve them after that. But
it's like there's a, like, emailaddress for the this listserv
Tracy (11:22):
Yeah.
Matt (11:22):
The, like, the forever
night one amongst the, like,
other 200 listservs that arerunning as part of this listserv
service, and all it has to do isrebate emails. Right. It's like
it's like so computationallycheap that it it's not worth it
to, like, clean up old stuffYeah. Especially if it's still
(11:45):
being used. Right.
Probably they have somethingwhere it's like, hey, everybody
on this listserv, there has beenzero activity for 6 months. If
there's zero activity foranother 6 months, we're going to
shut this down Yeah. Becauseit's not being used, and then
send out monthly updates.Alright. It's a 120 days until
(12:06):
this goes dead.
It's 90 days, 60 days, 30 days.Right. You know, 5 days. It
still
Tracy (12:12):
gets used. Yeah.
Matt (12:13):
The forever night one
still gets used. And so the it's
effectively free for thisuniversity to keep running the
listserv that supports theforever night listserv, so they
keep doing it.
Tracy (12:26):
Or maybe the professor
that set it up is still there.
Right. Who knows? The other day,the lady who owns the Cadillac,
not the hero Cadillac or no.Maybe she owns the hero
Cadillac.
Not the one that got wrecked, but the other one. She sent out
an update that was like, it'sstill doing great. I'm not doing
as well, so, like, I don't goto, car shows as much as I used
(12:48):
to. But, like, it just got inand got a whole bunch of work
done because the brakes werelocking up, but, like, it's
still running, and I still haveit, and it's still cool. And I'm
like, can you be my friend, andcan you will that to me, please?
But the thing that I found, theErmig found, the all I needed to
know I learned in life all Ineeded to know in life I learned
on 4 night l.
Reese (13:09):
Mhmm.
Tracy (13:09):
In my head, it's fork nai
l, but that's it's 4 night l.
And, I will put it up onInstagram. So if you wanna go
read the full list, you canbecause it's quite extensive.
But the one that I thoughtreally, really resonated with us
still, and I thought, wow, we'rethis far away from the original
airing and the original fancommunity, and yet getting the
hang of the art of cheesyrationalization greatly enhances
(13:33):
your life.
Matt (13:35):
Yes.
Tracy (13:38):
And then there's another
one later that's like, Mick
wins. You'll see. Wait. No. Seecheesy rationalization above.
And I felt like that one reallyapplies to this particular
episode because it's thetechnology is scary. And,
Matt (13:55):
And I have a cheesy
rationalization for all of the
technology.
Tracy (13:59):
Well and I am so glad
because I really feel like this
is us just carrying on ourinheritance as, the new wave of
fans coming to this. I mean, new. I guess I have also been in
it for 20 years, but saying thatout loud sounds absolutely
fucking ridiculous. Guy predateFacebook, so I had a forever
(14:23):
night page. I had, like I was onthe web rings where you click on
the WebRings thing, and it wouldtake you to another okay.
Do I need to explain whatWebRings are? I guess I do. So
everybody used to have their ownpersonal pages because I'm
sorry. You didn't have, like, aFacebook profile page. You would
go to GeoCities and set up 1 ormaybe you got fancy and paid,
like, a lifetime loan, like, alifetime
Matt (14:45):
Lifetime domain
registration.
Tracy (14:46):
Lifetime domain
registration for, like,
racheloak.com or whatever. Andthen because there was only com
or gov or edu. And you would putthat up, and then you would make
your little website that said, like, I'm a fan for overnight,
and you would put all your linksand your pictures and you would
make all your little whatever.Everybody did it. It was a
thing.
And then if you wanted people tofind you, you would sign up for
(15:07):
WebRings, and you would apply tobe in the WebRing. You put a
little graphic at the bottom ofyour page, and it was like, I'm
a member of the Forever KnightWebRing. Go to next page, go to
random page, whatever. And youcould click forward back or
random, and it would take you toanother page
Matt (15:23):
in the WebRing. There
would be some server running the
WebRing thing, and you couldsay, send me the previous, like,
web page in the list of membersof this WebRing
Tracy (15:34):
Yeah.
Matt (15:34):
Or give me a random, like,
web page link for a member of
the list of
Tracy (15:42):
Yeah. And you might find
somebody who is super cool, and
you like their page, and youwanted to see they you'd check
their updates to make surethey'd update recently to know
it was not a dead page, and thenyou would bookmark it so you
could go back later. And thatwas how the Internet worked,
folks.
Matt (15:55):
And
Tracy (15:55):
this is the era in which
this whole episode is taking
place. There is no social media. There are no cell phones that
have the Internet. This isliterally, you went to the
Internet. The Internet was awayfrom you.
You had to go and purposefullyengage in the Internet. That's
why they're like, where was shelogged on? Oh, she was logged on
(16:16):
in her office. So we're justsetting this stage.
Matt (16:19):
That kind of thing? Yes.
Yes. Yes.
Tracy (16:22):
Yeah. No. Yeah. Pretty
easily. Yeah.
It's fine.
Matt (16:25):
So this episode would have
been, like, filmed and produced
in 1995. So I remember in, like,94, 95, my uncle took us to
this, like, trade show at alocal, space, convention center
space, whatever. And it was awhole bunch of, like, computer
(16:48):
ish stuff, but they had, like,at the time, the full immersion
VR experience. And they had the, like, the pedestal, like,
circular thing that you stand inand this really heavy headset.
(17:08):
Like, it was hard to hold myhead up straight.
And you had gloves and, like, aa toy gun. And I think it there
were 2 of them, so you wouldplay, like, multiplayer or,
like, 2 player, point and shootcombat game. But it was just,
like, there were 2 levels to it,and there was an 2 elevators
(17:32):
that you could take to go up afloor or down a floor. But it
was all wireframes. But youcould see the outline of the
other person.
You could see, like, if youlooked down at your hands, you
could see roughly where yourhands were because they had,
like, the position detectionbecause of this, like, pedest
(17:53):
this platform with the wall halfwalls and the rings. They had
all the position detectionsensors built into that, and it
was this huge heavy rig. And allyou could show, like,
graphically, was wireframes.Okay. And then and so that would
(18:15):
be representative of, like, cutting edge VR technology in,
like, 95.
Tracy (18:22):
Yeah. You mean it wasn't
a sunglasses with a wire glued
to it and a couple of leathergloves with some lights on it?
Matt (18:29):
That never turned off.
Tracy (18:30):
Lies. I'm sorry. They,
you know, they didn't bring the
good shit to the trade showOkay. Clearly.
Matt (18:35):
So my headcanon about the
VR technology in this head in
this episode, LaCroix wasworking with the hardware
developer.
Tracy (18:47):
I love it. It's always
LaCroix.
Matt (18:49):
Yeah. It's always LaCroix.
Tracy (18:50):
It's always LaCroix.
Matt (18:51):
LaCroix was working with
the the guy who developed the
the VR hardware. Yeah. And theywere investigating how does
vampire hypnotism work. And sothe the headset, the the
glasses, all that's doing is,like, interfacing with your
brain and your eyes the same wayvampire hypnotism does. Oh.
(19:15):
And that's why and so it'sreceiving, like, brain computer,
of what's happening, like, onthe multiplayer server.
Tracy (19:31):
Yeah.
Matt (19:32):
And that's why sometimes
you see the we we only ever see,
Nick, the the hardware dev, andthe lady wearing the the VR rig.
Tracy (19:45):
Yeah.
Matt (19:48):
But I think that's, in my
head, this is why sometimes you
see them, like, moving theirhands in the real world Yeah.
Mirrored in the game. And othertimes, Nick will just be sitting
still Yes. That's right. Realworld.
Tracy (20:05):
Yep.
Matt (20:06):
And but in the game, he's
actually moving around and,
like, doing hand to hand combatstuff, but he doesn't have to do
the the hand to hand combatmoves in the real world. It's
because it's actually a purelymental interface, like,
masquerading as this, like, haptic feedback glove technology
(20:26):
Yeah. With position sensingrelative to the glasses. So
that's that's my headcanon
Tracy (20:33):
for why
Matt (20:34):
how this stuff will work.
Okay. And you can't convince me
otherwise.
Tracy (20:39):
This cheesy
rationalization moment brought
to you by Matt's second cup ofcoffee. Thank you, everyone.
Thank you. Okay. So I guess weshould start the episode.
So we open on a guy insunglasses and gloves with
lights. This is our VR rig. Iwill accept no notes. This is
(21:01):
this is how this works. We have
Matt (21:02):
a rotating wireframe cube
on a CRT computer screen.
Tracy (21:07):
I mean, that's fucking
high-tech. Okay. He tap tap tap
tap taps. He debugs code. Okay?
He debugs.
Matt (21:13):
It. He does. Yeah. Because
With with keyboard clicks.
Tracy (21:17):
Yeah. Because he's like,
oh, this feels almost real. I
guess I better debug the code. And then he takes everything
off, and he's like, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. I am doing my
job.
And he puts it back on, and he'slike, oh, yeah. This is so nice.
Because he's talking to the thesexy vampress in the game who is
(21:37):
wearing nothing but a leathervest strategically located over
her decolletage. And he he'slike, oh, I've got an hour to
kill. Because she says, are youhere to play?
Are you here to work? Are youhere to work or play? And he's
like, I'm here to play. I got anhour to kill. And she goes, but
it only takes a second to die.
And he's like, oh, yeah. This isso real. This is the moment
(21:59):
where I have to say, did heprogram her? Because if he
programmed her, he would beaware of what her responses
should be.
Matt (22:06):
Okay. So here's my my
interpretation of what's going
on with Oh. With this game.
Tracy (22:13):
I knew you were gonna
Matt (22:14):
like this episode. He he
developed the hardware Yeah. The
interface. Yeah. But she did soshe mentions that she was doing
animation Yeah.
In, like, a video game school.
Tracy (22:28):
I don't know. And The
computer school that they went
to. Yes.
Matt (22:33):
In my head, she designed
all of the the story in the game
and the characters and theanimations, and he worked on the
interface Okay. The VR rig.
Tracy (22:46):
Right. So he doesn't know
what to expect from her.
Matt (22:49):
Right. Because, oh, she
added a new thing to to the
game.
Tracy (22:53):
Oh, it only takes a
second to die? God, she's sick.
I love it. Okay. Alright.
Fine. Fine. And he can feel herfingernails. She's, like,
dragging.
Matt (23:00):
The LaCroix consulting con
and the LaCroix consultation
Yeah. Process, that's why it'svampire themed.
Tracy (23:09):
What does Lacroix call
his his contracting, like, his
contracting company?
Matt (23:16):
Nightcrawler Consulting.
Tracy (23:18):
Oh, you think so? And
then their tagline is with a
friend in the Nightcrawler whoneeds enemies, and yet somehow
he still gets business. I don'tknow how it works. So I can't
even get followers on Instagram.
Matt (23:30):
He gets every contract
that he wants to get
Tracy (23:33):
Oh, this is yeah.
Matt (23:34):
Because of hypnotism.
Tracy (23:36):
Yeah. And, that's the
contracts
Matt (23:40):
he doesn't
Tracy (23:40):
want. It's Nick Sucks.
Matt (23:41):
Leave away leave him
alone.
Tracy (23:43):
I think it's Nick Sucks
with an x. Nick, s u x. Nick
Sucks.
Matt (23:47):
No. That's his password.
Tracy (23:49):
Oh oh, for everything.
Don't worry. I wish Nick would
suck.
Matt (23:54):
Nick is such a puritanical
loser.
Tracy (23:57):
Wow. That's a lot of no.
It's 8 and under, and I need a I
need a special character and acapitalization letter.
Matt (24:02):
I was, working with a code
thing at work the other day,
helping somebody debugsomething, and we were
complaining about variable names
Tracy (24:11):
Yeah.
Matt (24:11):
In the computer code. And,
I think this part of the code
had really short variable names, which really short variable
names are really hard to figureout what they mean Yeah. If it's
just a letter. And so I wasexplaining that way back in the
day, like, the first after, like, writing raw assembly code,
(24:35):
but before, like, Python, Therewas a period of time where you
had, like, a higher levellanguage for writing code where
you could write, like, basicallyEnglish words and mathematical
symbols to to do stuff. But thelength of the variable name was
limited because of memory.
Tracy (24:56):
Mhmm.
Matt (24:56):
And so they would have,
like, longer variable names, but
only the first eight charactersof the variable name were used,
it would truncate the rest ofthe it would cut off the rest of
the variable name. And so I wasexplaining that, like, a lot of,
like, old school coders from, like, the eighties early
(25:18):
nineties, they got into thehabit out of necessity of using
short variable names.
Tracy (25:25):
Right.
Matt (25:26):
And if they've just kept
coding for 30 years, then
they're still they might stillhave that, like, built in habit.
The habit. Yeah. And so that wasmy speculation on why this
particular section of code waswritten with really short
variable names.
Tracy (25:42):
Nick sucks. Trying to
bring bring you back.
Matt (25:44):
Yes. Yeah. Thank you.
Thank you. I was trying to
reconnect the dot.
Tracy (25:48):
I know. I could see that
I could see that look in your
eye, the how did I get here fromwhere I started?
Matt (25:55):
So, yeah, if he was if he
was writing code, yes. But for
passwords, if you're juststoring text as input in a
computer program, you can Yeah. You can store an arbitrarily
Tracy (26:07):
But imagine he takes it
to, like, the nerd herd, the
geek squad, and they're like, okay. What's the password to
your laptop? And he's like, okay. Are you ready? He was
brought across in 12/28.
I'm sorry. Is that all one word? No. There's spaces. Every word's
capitalized.
Okay. So, anyway, this guy is inhis virtual reality world again
(26:30):
because he's, like, I'm here toplay. I got an hour to kill. And
so the lady After
Matt (26:33):
he's debugged the code.
Mhmm.
Tracy (26:35):
And he you can we know
he's debugged the code because
she's dragging her fingernailacross his cheek, and he's like,
oh my god. I can feel that. Itfeels so real. There's nothing
on his cheek. There's nothing tocreate this sensation.
Matt (26:46):
That's why it's hypnotism
based VR technology.
Tracy (26:51):
Okay. Fine.
Matt (26:51):
Because that could produce
the sensations in your body
Tracy (26:54):
Yeah.
Matt (26:54):
Anywhere, based on just
Tracy (26:57):
the code from the
beginning. Why he believes it it
because he invented thehardware. He should fucking know
what the limitations of the
Matt (27:03):
hardware are.
Tracy (27:04):
And he's like, oh, I can
feel that. It feels so good. And
she's like, okay.
Matt (27:07):
No. He says he says, I'm
so fucking good.
Tracy (27:10):
Oh, yeah. I'm so well, he
just says I'm good because it's
Matt (27:13):
Yeah. Because it's
Tracy (27:14):
It's network television.
Television. And then, Pew Pew,
he died. And I'm like, uh-oh. Hedied in the game.
Does that mean he stays in thegame?
Matt (27:21):
The neck. This at the same
time, he got stabbed in the neck
in the game? Yeah.
Tracy (27:25):
Oh, that feels so real.
He's so good at this. He's
actually died. It's like beingin the holodeck with the
safeties off. It's fine.
Right. And then he goes into theinto the intro. He, we, we,
collectively, as people go intothe intro. And I would like to
point out that I paused it.
Matt (27:41):
He goes through the outro.
Tracy (27:43):
He does. He done. He
gone. Led by by low. R h low is
gone.
And so we go to the intro and Iwanna point out that I paused it
because my son came out andneeded something. And then Matt
goes, when did they change theintro? Because I happened to
pause it right when Tracy is inthe intro. And I'm like, at the
beginning of season 3, they
Matt (28:01):
changed. I've I've seen
the, like, here's Tracy, like,
clip. Yeah. But I thought thiswas, like, a longer sequence.
Oh.
A longer scene that was, like, put plopped in the middle of the
the intro because you unpausedit, and it immediately went
black to the
Tracy (28:20):
Black to black.
Matt (28:21):
Unpaused it, and it
immediately went back to, like,
black background with whitetext. Yeah. And, oh, okay. We're
just in the characterintroduction flip flop.
Tracy (28:31):
Right. Yes. So then we
come back from the intro and
it's Tracy and Nick driving inthe car. And Nick is driving and
he's staring out the frontwindow and Tracy is like, Nick,
I just wanna tell you that I'mreally feeling overwhelmed at
work because I'm swamped withpaperwork. Our paperwork.
I literally have it piled up tohere. She gestures above her
(28:53):
head. And she's like, it's ourpaperwork as in you and me. And
so my question for you, Nicholasb Knight, is why am I the only
one doing the paperwork?
Ow. Paperwork. As in you
and me? So my question to you,
(29:15):
Nicholas B. Knight, is this.
Why am I doing all the paperworkmyself? I mean, partners work
together. Right? So that meansyou should be helping me with
the paperwork. You and me.
Good.
Got that off my chest.
Matt (29:34):
What is his middle name?
Brabant. His active legal name
is Nicholas Brabant
Tracy (29:41):
Knight. Knight. Yeah.
Really? Yeah.
Matt (29:44):
Is this the first we're
seeing this?
Tracy (29:45):
I mean, we know he's Nick
b Knight, I think.
Matt (29:48):
I don't know. This this is
the first Bertram. Like,
reference I've seen to himhaving a middle name.
Tracy (29:54):
Yeah.
Matt (29:55):
So I I was I wanna I
Tracy (29:57):
think he shows up as Nick
b Knight when we looked up his
badge number, and the only thingthat showed up was his name and
his picture. And they're like, this can't be right, and he's
like, be right back, and then hegoes off. Maybe it was
Aristotle's joke. He's a hecould've made him knight Nick
Brabant. That would've beenreally funny.
Are you k knight Brabant?
Matt (30:21):
Yeah. That'd be funny.
Tracy (30:22):
Yeah. Well, yeah, here we
are. We didn't get it. So Nick
is not responding. He's justlooking out the window.
And so Tracy keeps going becauseshe's making an emotional bid
and he is not. He's not pickingup what she's putting down. And
she's like, partners worktogether. Right? So you should
be helping me with thepaperwork.
You and me doing paperworktogether. And he does not look
(30:45):
at her or respond to Viola. Shegoes
Matt (30:47):
head, he's thinking,
Skanky never complained about
doing all
Tracy (30:50):
the paperwork. Listening.
I like to imagine the only thing
in his head is
Matt (30:57):
He's hearing the
nightcrawler, but he doesn't
have the radio on.
Tracy (31:01):
Oh, he's listening to the
Matt (31:04):
buzzer. Maybe. I'm finally
He was listening to the
nightcrawler, but then Tracyturned off the radio
Tracy (31:09):
Yeah. And
Matt (31:10):
he's just getting his
spiel. Yeah. But he's still
listening in his head.
Tracy (31:13):
Right. So I like yeah.
That that would be good. But she
finally wraps up with, good. Igot that off my chest.
I feel much better. And she'slike, Nick. Nick. And he's like,
yep. What?
Yep. I was listening. She goes, did you hear anything I said? He
goes, yeah. You said you feelmuch better, and that's good,
(31:34):
isn't it?
And she's like, what the fuck iswrong with you lately? You're so
out of it. He's like, out ofwhat? Poor Tracy. Poor Tracy.
All she wants to be is a goodcop. She got put with this guy
because there was series ofreally traumatic circumstances.
He was the only one available. And then she just Everyone else
Matt (31:56):
was paired up, and she was
the last match.
Tracy (31:58):
Yeah. She gave up
Matt (31:59):
dodgeball game.
Tracy (32:00):
She gave up a career
building move to stay with him,
and he's like, mhmm. Yep. I'mlistening. What did you say?
Matt (32:11):
Yeah. Up till now, it's
been mostly, like, shit.
Tracy (32:14):
Shenanigans. It's been
mostly shenanigans. Don't lie.
Don't lie. Don't lie toyourself.
Nickolized himself enough. Sothen we go to the crime scene.
We respond to the crime scene, and they're like, oh, he didn't
react. I don't know how you knowthat. He just shot got shot in
the neck.
So they're like, yeah.
Matt (32:33):
Well, there's no signs of
struggle?
Tracy (32:35):
I guess. I mean, they
didn't hear he didn't hear the
killer clearly or, he didn't seethem or he knew them is what
Reese says. And then Nick picksup the headset and he's like, or
or he was in the virtual realitygame, and he was oblivious to
everything else. How does Nickknow about virtual reality? Nick
can't Nick doesn't even have acomputer on his desk.
(32:59):
Nick forgets his cell phone
Matt (33:01):
half the time. High-tech,
his computer is built into his
desk.
Tracy (33:05):
Is that what it is? Okay.
He just does feel like, oh, in
the 19 eighties when we're like,oh, like in Tron and we're like,
the future is your computer willbe your desk and so he's like
tapping on the glass top of hiscomputer because that's where
his desk or of his desk becausethat's where his computer is.
End of line. Yeah.
I guess. But he's like, oh,yeah. Virtual reality. Yeah.
(33:25):
That's what this is.
Okay, Mick. Sure. You yep. Sure. And Tracy comes over and she's,
like, actually, this was r hLowe.
He's the co owner and softwaredeveloper at this company, and
he had a partner. Thank you. That was, like, literally the
Thank you
Matt (33:41):
for actual police work.
Tracy (33:42):
That is, I mean, are you
guys ready? The only
investigating that we do in thisentire episode.
Matt (33:47):
No. No. They're trying to
solve anagrams.
Tracy (33:52):
Which Nick solves with a
piece of paper faster than they
do. But that's fine. We're notthere yet. We're not there yet.
I mean, that's the most I guessthey do look into her
background, and they're like, there's nothing here.
She didn't do anything. Like, there's nothing going on. Yeah.
And they're like, well, who elsecould we look into? The janitor?
Anyone? Did we look at who hadaccess to the building? Did we
figure out who might have beenin the room? Are there security
(34:14):
cameras? Are there fingerprints?
Is there literally anything? They're like, I think she
confessed in the game, though,so I'm pretty sure that's the
answer, and we just need to gowith it. Well, Nick does that.
Matt (34:26):
Yeah.
Tracy (34:26):
And we don't know what
Tracy is doing while Nick is off
shenaniganizing because this isthe one time she's, like, step
too far, Nick. I'm not goingwith you. She's probably back
doing paperwork, But I wannapoint out that Natalie is
wearing her camel coat in thisscene, and I knew Natalie had a
camel coat, but when we went tomeet Katharine Disher, she
(34:46):
mentioned that she actually keptone of the camel coats because
there's 2.
Matt (34:50):
Mhmm.
Tracy (34:51):
And that she wore it to
like a play and so she got
easily identified as Natalie. And then the Knicks fans or
Gare's fans ratted her out forleaving at halftime
Matt (35:01):
Mhmm.
Tracy (35:01):
At intermission because
halftime, like, is football, for
leaving at intermission becausethey spotted her leaving because
she was wearing her camel coat. And I honestly did not I was not
as aware of the camel coat untilnow, and then I'm like, wow. She
is wearing that camel coat inevery scene. It's just like the
Natalie, okay. I put on anoutfit, and now I put on my
(35:22):
coat.
Matt (35:23):
Yep. Yeah. So why is it
called a camel coat? That's the
color. Oh, camel coat.
Tracy (35:29):
Or that that type of coat
is referred to as a camel coat,
the, like, khaki.
Matt (35:33):
Gotcha.
Tracy (35:34):
Yeah. I don't know why.
And I think it's the type of
fabric too. It's like a wooly, pelted wool type of fabric. I
don't know.
It's called a camel coat. Justis. Okay. So I don't make the
rules. It's like the what no.
Meg looked up what the the puffypants from the last week. That
we didn't get a flashback inthis episode. He didn't remember
he didn't remember the last timehe was he was hanging out with
(35:57):
the guy.
Matt (35:59):
Like, an imaginary
environment.
Tracy (36:01):
I like to think this will
be a flashback 40 years from now
when he's solving another crimeinvolving virtual reality. He's
like, I remember virtual reality40 years ago.
Matt (36:10):
Anyway the virtual reality
scenes replaced the flashback.
Tracy (36:14):
Yeah. Yeah. They must
have because I mean, that would
have been a lot to get that andthe virtual reality scenes and a
flashback. Yeah. And Reese islike, oh, yeah.
Video games. I know video games.I have a nephew who mainlines
this stuff. Oh, okay. I mean, that's fine.
Matt (36:32):
Like Tetris?
Tracy (36:33):
Didn't the PlayStation
come out in 94? Yeah. Yeah. The
first one. So Nick's Spacey.
I mean, he's just standing therelike, I would literally rather
be anywhere else. And surprise, surprise, everybody notices. And
Reese says, I hope we aren'tboring you. And Nick is like,
what? No.
Nope. Yawn. No. I'm fine. I'mperfectly fine.
(36:56):
I'm not bored. I'm not bored. And so Reese is like, great. Can
you follow-up on ballistics?Which the only thing that means
is he follows Natalie back tothe borg because ballistics is
in the room with us right now,y'all.
Look to your left. There she is.So we go back to the morgue, and
we literally get this, like,Catherine Disher has the dish
tipped towards the camera. Andshe just goes
Matt (37:15):
It looked like a really
unnatural angle to hold this
metal container.
Tracy (37:18):
Right. It's just so she
can go plink and drop the bullet
in it Yeah. And then turn toNick. And Nick is like, don't
you ever get tired of it? AndNatalie's like, of what?
What would I get tired of?
Matt (37:31):
You, Nick? Yes. I get
tired of you, Nick.
Tracy (37:33):
I get tired of your
bullshit is what I get tired of.
And Natalie's like, of what? AndNick goes, the routine, the
mundane, the mortal, like, dayin, like, going to work every
day. I would like to point outthat Nick is a billionaire, and
he absolutely does not need towork. He could quit and just
keep coming to the morgue andhanging out with Natalie and
(37:54):
have no other obligations, andit would be just fine.
Matt (37:57):
Right. He chose this life.
Tracy (37:59):
Yeah. He chose this.
Every day, he's choosing to work
because he doesn't need to work.He probably owns Toronto. And
finally, Natalie's like, okay.
And Nick's like, yeah. I'mbored. I'm just really bored of
all this. And Natalie's like, well, that's not good because
bored cops make carelessmistakes, and that won't matter
much to you because you couldget hit by a truck and it
(38:21):
wouldn't matter, but it's gonnamatter to Tracy if you being
bored gets her in the line offire. And Nick is, like, I mean,
I'm not, like, that bored.
I mean, I'm just, like, boredbored. She goes, if it was any
other cop, I'd prescribe aweek's vacation and call it
burnout. But with you, what doyou usually do when this
(38:41):
happens? And Nick is, like, Imove on. And Natalie goes,
whoop.
There it is.
I hate to say this, but
boredom on the job is a very
common human dilemma. If youwere anybody else, I'd prescribe
a week on a beach somewhere andwrite it off as burnout. But
you're not anybody else in thepast when this happened. You've
just
Nick (38:57):
Moved on.
Tracy (38:59):
Moved on. Well, there it
is.
Nick (39:01):
Look. I'm not saying that
that's what I'm going to do.
Tracy (39:04):
Look, Nick. Like, well,
see you later then, son. Like, I
begged you to stay at the end ofBlack Buddha and I regret it
every single day because I couldbe done with you. And she says,
I get that being a vampire isthrilling and losing it has to
feel boring, but you wantedthis. Like, you wanted a mortal
life.
(39:24):
This is a mortal life, sucker. This is it. This is what we do.
We go to work. We go home.
We watch some TV. We eat dinner. We go to bed, and then we repeat
the process. And she goes, justdo what humans do. If you're
feeling stagnant, get a hobby.
Start a podcast. Learn to livewith it.
Matt (39:41):
Yeah. But Claw was bored
hanging around Toronto to keep
an eye on you. So he got ahobby. He bought a he bought a
nightclub. Well, first, hestarted a podcast Yeah.
Nick (39:51):
And then
Matt (39:51):
he bought a nightclub.
Tracy (39:53):
Yeah. And now he, has a
consulting
Matt (39:58):
Look at look at all of his
things LaCroix is doing to keep
himself, like, engaged andentertained in day to day life.
Tracy (40:04):
Yeah. What are you doing,
Nick?
Matt (40:07):
I never thought I'd say
this, but, Nick, you could learn
something from Lacoste.
Tracy (40:14):
And then we go back to
the precinct with Reese, and
he's like, Nick in my office. Sohe pulls Nick in his office, and
Reese is like, I'm worried aboutyou. Do you need time off? Do
you need a change of pace? Whatis happening here?
And he goes, I never thought I'dhear myself saying this, but I
don't like what I'm seeing fromyou.
Reese (40:35):
I never thought I'd hear
myself saying this, but I don't
like what I'm seeing from youlately. I think you need to take
stock of this situation and workit out.
Matt (40:44):
He says it all the time.
Tracy (40:45):
You said that in the last
4 episodes, Reese. I don't know
what to tell you. Just look backat the part where you were,
like, did we follow-up onwhether or not she used her car
phone? No. No.
Well, I did because y'all arenot investigating this crime.
How about the episode where wewe found 1 guy? We interviewed 1
guy, and then all of a sudden, everybody had a sick friend and
(41:05):
just stopped coming to work for, like, a week. You say that all
the time.
Matt (41:09):
A repeat of this, Nick.
Tracy (41:13):
Again? Again? I don't
know. It doesn't matter. And he
goes, cops are human, Nick.
Sometimes they lose focus.Sometimes your partner, might
have to start watching her ownback when she's out on the
street, and Nick is, like, Iresent that implication.
Matt (41:26):
I am human. Some cops are
human.
Tracy (41:28):
I I resent both the
implication that, a, I am human,
and that, b, that I'm puttingTracy in the line of danger. In
fact, I leave Tracy behind allthe time. I am taking such good
care of her. And Nick is like, you know, he he tries to set the
record straight, but Reese isnot having it. He's like, you
know the signs.
(41:49):
I know the signs. There are nowhat was the line from Solaris
that we just heard? It was like,
Matt (41:55):
there are no solutions.
There are only choices.
Tracy (41:58):
Yeah. There are no
solutions, only choices. And you
just have to decide what you'regonna do about it. We don't get
to decide the time that is givento us. What we decide is what to
do with the time we have.
And Reese is like, that littlechestnut, I'm a let you go out
into life and just chew on thatfor a little bit. So Nick walks
(42:18):
out of the office, and we hearfrom across the room, it's a
vampire. What? And Nick is like,oh, no.
Matt (42:25):
They finally
Tracy (42:26):
they finally figured it
out. Oh, wait. It's not about
me. I would love for, in thatmoment, him to be like, and then
Ralph. They're like, what justhappened?
Other than Nate, what?
Matt (42:38):
This isn't Gary. The take
where
Tracy (42:40):
Oh, yeah.
Matt (42:40):
They said it's a vampire,
and he went
Tracy (42:42):
He does look bored in
this episode. Like, I feel like
he's bored in this episode.Like, I would rather be quoting
Shakespeare.
Matt (42:48):
He's such a good actor.
Tracy (42:49):
Is that what it is?
That's that's definitely what it
is. It's because there's nowell, there is a female costar,
which he gets to. He doesn't getto make out with her, though.
That's it.
That's it.
Matt (42:59):
He doesn't get to make out
with anyone in this episode.
Tracy (43:01):
He doesn't. No wonder he
was like,
Matt (43:03):
oh, damn. The script for
this episode, and he was, like,
I don't get to make out withanyone?
Tracy (43:09):
Not even in the past.
Matt (43:11):
And so then he doesn't
even wanna be here.
Tracy (43:12):
I mean, look at the
previous episode. He got to
have, like, a a weird bed scenewhere he was making out
Matt (43:19):
with the lady in bed.
There is the the Do you trust
me? 1 of the first VR sceneswhere the lady is, like, rubbing
on his face.
Tracy (43:27):
Yeah. That's the one
where he's like, woah. And
they're like, oh, good.
Matt (43:29):
To make out with her.
Tracy (43:30):
It's okay. We're almost
there. Let me get there because
he's like, And then he walksover because Tracy is with,
like, a computer ops detective. And you can tell because she's
got a plaid vest on and matchingpants. That's how you know she's
computer.
And so she's like, hi. I'm oneof 2 people who investigate
computer crimes in the entire inthe entire department. You're
(43:52):
welcome, and I'm here to be adetective and help you out. I've
been looking at this game. It'sa virtual reality game.
I I stopped because I wanted towrite this down because here's
what it is. Are you all ready? It is a virtual reality game
combined with an online service. So it's an online virtual
reality game that connects witha digital cell phone to a high
(44:13):
speed mainframe at VirtualDimensions Lab.
Matt (44:17):
Which is not horrible.
It's not a horrible way to
describe this technology in in aTV show compared to compared to,
like, other portrayals oftechnology in TV shows, which
they have no idea. They actuallytalked to a tech person to say,
(44:40):
okay. What would what would itlook like to have a functional
VR game, like a multiplayeronline game, that that you could
have, like, a rig in a portablerig? Yeah.
Oh, well, you can't use, like, landline, like, dial up Internet
because it's too slow. You'renot gonna get, you're not gonna
(45:01):
get enough bandwidth to transmitthe information, and you're not
it's it's not gonna be lowenough latency to have it feel
like interactive, like real timeinteractive
Tracy (45:12):
Right.
Matt (45:12):
With the other players on
the online service. Okay. So it
needs a dedicated form ofcommunication. Well, you get a
cell phone, and you say, oh,it's a fancy cell phone. It's a
digital cell phone.
Tracy (45:25):
A digital cell phone.
Matt (45:27):
Okay. You're making up
technology anyway.
Tracy (45:30):
Yeah. Go for it.
Matt (45:31):
This sounds realistic
enough. And then the computer
that it runs on, like, for theshared service needs to be fast.
Well, the fastest computers atthe time, the most powerful
computers at the time aremainframe computers, which
mainframe computers aren'treally used anymore. There, some
banks still use them becausethey're really, really good at,
(45:54):
like, high speed, like, highspeed trend like, lots of small
transactions for bank stuff. Andand the code is, like, proven
to, like, not have bugs for, youknow, dropping things.
Anyway, mainframe is thebiggest, most powerful computer
word in the vocabulary at thetime. So I'm not upset at this
(46:18):
description of the technology.Good job, everybody.
Tracy (46:22):
Garrett Wendavies
directed this episode. Yeah. And
I was looking up the writerbecause I wanted to see if she'd
written any other episodes, butit looks like she's written 3
episodes. She wrote falsewitness. She's written a bunch.
She wrote false witness, loveyou to death, if looks could
kill. So false witness is theone where he breaks up the porn
(46:43):
ring, and he claims to have seenthe the killer, but he didn't
see the killer. That's falsewitness. And then love you to
death is oh, that's the onewhere he remembers, like, the
death of the model. Like, thethe model gets kidnapped, but
she also looks like that ladyfrom his past that he thought
she was a pure ballerina, but itLacroix tricked him.
(47:06):
It's the
Matt (47:07):
same thing. She was a pure
ballerina. But
Tracy (47:09):
Yeah. She was fine. But
he
Matt (47:10):
killed her anyway.
Tracy (47:11):
Right. He killed her
anyway. And if looks could kill,
which I'm almost positive is theone with the 3 ladies that
they've been giving they've beengetting vampire blood, and so
they're young.
Matt (47:22):
Right.
Tracy (47:23):
Yeah. And then Killer
Instinct, which is the season 2
premiere, and that's the onewhere Nick gets framed. And then
Faithful Followers, the episodewhere he joins the cult, and
then Games Vampires Play. So shewrote all of those episodes. I
was trying to figure out if shehad a theme.
Like, apparently, there's oneguy who writes Star Trek
(47:44):
episodes. And every Star Trekepisode he writes, somebody
devolves into
Matt (47:50):
Oh, like animals?
Something.
Tracy (47:52):
Like, they turn into a
lizard person or they turn into
a spider or they turn intowhatever. And that's literally
what he writes every singletime. So maybe she writes the
the off ball, like, the odd ballones, but no. No. But, I mean,
Garrett, when Davies directedthis, I just wanna put that out
there.
Yeah. Anyway, the computer opsdetective is looking at the
(48:13):
game. She breaks down all thethe tech tech tech tech tech
tech tech, and then she goes, this is next generation stuff.
And Tracy goes, I preferreality. And so the lady goes,
yeah.
But reality doesn't havevampires. So Nick puts on the
glasses. He's like, okay. Cool.Let me try this out, and so he
(48:35):
puts the glasses on, and, hegets awkwardly into it in front
of everybody because he's like,oh, like, heavy breathing.
And they're like, oh, is it apretty lady? What? What is I
would be like, I'm gonna go tothe bathroom. I just have to go
to the bathroom. I cannot watchmy partner get super turned on
(48:59):
by this video game right infront of me.
He can't help it. He sees apretty woman, and he's just
like, must have. And then hetakes it off, and he's like,
Pretty girl,
Nick (49:16):
Yeah. Very pretty. God.
Tracy (49:21):
It's so
Nick (49:23):
awkward. It is
Tracy (49:24):
they're like, wow. That
was that good, hon. He's like
Matt (49:27):
He's just putting on
sunglasses. Yeah. So so who
knows what when Gare wasportraying that
Tracy (49:37):
Yeah.
Matt (49:37):
What he was imagining that
Nick was seeing.
Tracy (49:40):
Oh, we know what he was
imagining.
Matt (49:42):
Oh, yeah.
Tracy (49:42):
Yeah. No. It's fine. And
then he turns around. In real
life, he turns around, and she'swalking through the precinct,
the lady from the video game.
Matt (49:50):
And he's like, wow. This
is good.
Tracy (49:52):
He does not get shocked.
He's like, I manifested that
shit. Hell, yeah. He's soexcited. And so it turns out
that this is Rita, the co ownerof Virtual Dimensions, which is
the company that is making thisVR headset, and she met r h Lo
at school, and they clicked.
And Nick does, like, a eyebrowlift, and she goes, we clicked
(50:14):
professionally.
Matt (50:15):
Only.
Tracy (50:16):
Only. We did not slap, if
you wanna put call it that. We
just clicked. And Nick is like, okay. Well, it's lost that he
didn't hit that because I justabout did, and it was just a
virtual version of you.
And then she's like, we arepioneers. We design the
hardware. He designed thehardware. I designed the
(50:36):
software. And, like, that's whatour company is all about.
Like, we're gonna change theworld. And he's like, mhmm.
Okay. Cool. So where were you 4hours ago when he was murdered?
And she says she was on theInternet giving an interview to
some computer rag. Probablybuzzed. Buzz wire. No. Buzz wire
is from
Matt (50:55):
food life.
Tracy (50:57):
Sorry. I just got my
vampires mixed up there for a
second. And they're like, wheredid you log on? Where did you go
on the Internet? And in my head,I can just hear the log on
sound, the, like yeah.
Yeah. You didn't know what thatwas. You are under the age of
30. Congratulations.
Matt (51:14):
A audio
Tracy (51:16):
you know what I always
dial up and everything. Think
about when I hear that? Do youremember, that animated
television show? It was one ofthe first computer animated
television shows. It was called,
Matt (51:28):
Reboot?
Tracy (51:29):
Reboot. And they go out
on the Internet. They go through
a terminal and go out on theInternet. And the people on the
Internet, that's how they talk. They're like, like, when they're
trying to talk
Matt (51:39):
to them. Pirates.
Tracy (51:41):
Yes. On the Internet.
Pirates. Yes. And, you don't go
back and watch it though becauseit's way better in your memory
than it is in real life.
Matt (51:48):
Yeah.
Tracy (51:48):
I remember it being like,
oh, that was so cool in 3 d.
It's like Beast Wars, like thefirst Beast Wars. Mhmm. And
you're like, oh, that was the sothat was so cool. Then you watch
it now, and you're like, I couldprobably make that at home on my
phone.
Like, the anyway, it's fine. Soshe's like, in my office. I
logged on in my office, Andthey're, like, oh, okay. Can we
(52:09):
check that? And they're, like,yeah.
That's fine. So then we kindacut from that because Nick is,
like, yes. Yes. This is verynice. But where did we put the
headset?
I'm just wondering. Like, wheredid we put the VR game so I'll
know for later when I am loggingit into evidence like a good
police officer? And they'relike, oh, it's in it's in
lockup. And he's like, okay.Cool.
So he, like, leaves to go getit. So he he goes into evidence
(52:33):
lockup to, quote, check out thegoods, AKA the headset and the
gloves. And he just puts them onin lockup. He's like, I can't
even wait. I gotta do this againright now.
There's a hot chick here. Icould make out with her with
impunity, and I'm about to go doit. And so when it turns on,
hey. They're in the room. They're in that little entrance
room in the room Yeah.
Where we filmed dark night in
Matt (52:54):
the area.
Tracy (52:55):
And where we hung out
with Meg when we were on our
Toronto trip.
Reese (52:58):
Mhmm.
Tracy (52:58):
And, ironic. So then I
just wanna point out that the
voice recognition I was beforeyou know that this is actually
her, which how could it be her?Wasn't she just at the police
precinct?
Matt (53:12):
Right. This would have to
be, this would have to be
preprogrammed.
Tracy (53:17):
This woman is a pioneer.
She created a real AI before AI
was even a thing and voicerecognition software that
actually works.
Matt (53:25):
Another oh, maybe maybe
the vampire Hypnotek is really
good at converting it it's notactually it doesn't have a
microphone on it. It's justconverting the the ideas of the
words in your head into theactual words.
Tracy (53:43):
I love the level of
bullshit that you have ascending
to to explain all that. Thankyou. You are making it work.
Because I remember the firsttime my dad got a text to tie or
a tight like, a talk to textMhmm. Thing, and you had to
speak in a British accent to getit to recognize that you were
talking.
So, I mean, this is doing great. And then he ends up in this
(54:05):
baroque, boudoir room with avictim. It's like a lady in a
red dress. Oh, no. I was gonnasay, when did the Matrix come
out?
99. So obviously, the matrixcopied this, the woman in the
red dress, clearly.
Reese (54:19):
Yeah.
Tracy (54:19):
So in the game, surprise
surprise, he's a vampire and he
has to kill to keep up hisstrength. And he has, like, a
little timer in the corner andthen he has little crosses that
are his blood points, which ifyou've played vampire the
masquerade, you know what I'mtalking about. Those are your
blood points that he has toexpend to use vampire powers.
(54:41):
White Wolf already did this,y'all. It's just not virtual
reality unless you go to aLARPing game, and then it's
basically virtual reality.
And so, Rita is like, go ahead.Kill her. She wants to die. She
wants you to do it. So the ladywalks over, and she's like, I
want you to kill me.
Bite me. Do it. Kill me. And allI could think about was from,
like, the cow from therestaurant at the end of the
(55:03):
universe.
Matt (55:04):
Oh, yeah. But my flank is
especially tender.
Tracy (55:07):
Yeah. I've been force
feeding myself acorns for
months. My liver is is bloatedand tender. Like, if you haven't
read that, that's from DouglasAdams' restaurant at the end of
the universe, which is one ofthe sequels to Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy, and they goto literally the restaurant at
the end of the universe, like, when the universe is about to
die. And a cow comes out becausethey have, bred animals to want
(55:31):
to be eaten.
And so the cow was like, whatpart of me would you like to eat
tonight? And then So it'sethical. It's ethical,
obviously. And Rita is like,it's cool. It's just a game.
It's not like you're killingpeople in real life. It's not
like you're really a vampire. And I wrote in my notes, does
the Rita character react in realtime or have a set of responses?
AI, that's actually where themoney is and not in this virtual
(55:53):
reality game because probablythis hardware is priced out of
almost everybody's price range, which is what happened with the,
the Nintendo Virtual Boy.
Matt (56:04):
Oh, yeah.
Tracy (56:04):
Do you remember the
Virtual Boy? I remember
Matt (56:06):
the Virtual Boy.
Tracy (56:06):
The only thing I remember
about Virtual Boy is going to
Best Buy, and they had one ofthe things that you could wear
to, like, test it out, and italways smelled weirdly. Like, it
always smelled like weird sweatbecause it had this soft band
that pressed against your face. And it had done that to, like,
dozens of people already thatday, and so all I can remember
is the smell. Plus, it was onlyred.
Matt (56:24):
Yep. It was only red
lines.
Tracy (56:26):
There was only red lines.
So and it was super expensive,
which is why nobody made videogames for it, and nobody bought
it.
Matt (56:34):
Yeah.
Tracy (56:34):
So AI is where the money
is, Rita. That's all I'm gonna
say. But Rita confesses tokilling Lowe. She's like, yeah.
I killed him.
Of course, I fucking killed him.But I just confessed to you in a
virtual game. And unless you'regonna take me to virtual court,
I don't think it's admissible.
Matt (56:53):
I I love those on point
your
Nick (56:57):
Thank you.
Matt (56:57):
Your recreation
Tracy (56:58):
of that was. I really
felt like I was Rita in that
moment. And she says she'shidden the answer at the end of
the game, but he must get to theend of the game to find it, and
to do that, he has to play. AndNick's like, well, I'll fucking
play, and then he kills thelady. He's like, oh, yeah.
And he kills this lady.
Matt (57:15):
And his blood points.
Tracy (57:16):
Boop boop boop boop boop
boop. Yeah. And then Rita
disappears, and the plus signsat the bottom of the screen fill
up to indicate his health slashblood And we find out the
display is displaying both thetime that he has left in the
game, which is roughly 12 hours, and the blood, like, how much
(57:37):
blood he currently has in hissystem because vampires only
have the blood that they
Matt (57:43):
have. The only blood
Tracy (57:44):
in a
Matt (57:44):
vampire's body is the
blood that they've recently
consumed.
Tracy (57:47):
Correct. And so Reese
interrupts him because he's just
standing in the middle ofevidence lockup, heavy
breathing. They probably heardhim from outside the room.
They're like, is somebodyhyperventilating in there? And
they look in there, and Nick'sjust like
Matt (58:03):
Which the evidence locker
is supposed to have, like, a
dedicated person. The detectivescan't just go into the evidence
locker by themselves.
Tracy (58:13):
Oh, I beg to fucking
differ. He did. And then Reese
comes in. He's like, have youlost your fucking mind? And
Nick's like, I'm sorry.
What? I was I was busy. I wasbusy in the game. And he's like,
Nick, that's fucking evidence.And he's like, yeah.
That's why I'm investigating it,because it's evidence.
Matt (58:30):
There's evidence inside
here.
Tracy (58:33):
Reese is like, do you
know where your partner is? And
he's like, skanky? Yeah. Hedied. She's, no fucking Tracy.
Where is she? And he's like, oh,no. I have no idea. And Reese is
like, yeah. She's off actuallyinvestigating the crime, you
know, with the computerdetective lady whose name I
never caught.
I'm so sorry. And Nick says, hethinks that Rita is actually
(58:54):
playing a game with them. Yeah.He she's playing a game. She's
she's toying with me.
I can tell, and I I just need toget in this game and figure it
out. You you gotta understand. Imean, it's easy to see how Reese
is like, the fuck is wrong withyou? Because Nick is like, she's
playing with me. I can tellshe's playing with me.
This is all a game to her, andshe's toying with my mind. And
(59:16):
Reese is like, you need to getout of here, and you need to go
back with your partner. And Nickis like, I mean, whatever, but
I'm pretty sure all the evidencewe need is in this game. And
Reese is like, get the fuck outand go find your partner.
Matt (59:30):
Stop arguing with me. Put
that away.
Tracy (59:32):
And re Nick just carries
it out. He's like, yeah. I'm a
go I'm a go find my partner, andhe just sticks it all in it. He
doesn't even stick it in hispocket. He's just carrying it
when he leaves.
Matt (59:41):
Yeah.
Tracy (59:42):
And I have to imagine,
Reese is like, this is a
victory. This feels like avictory. He left the evidence
lockup. He didn't leave theevidence, but he left the
evidence lockup. At least he'llgo heavy breathe at home and
stop making everyone in theprecinct uncomfortable.
Matt (59:58):
And
Tracy (01:00:00):
we go to what I actually
think is the computer crimes
office with LED underlightingand all of these programming
manuals up on the top and notvirtual dimensions. I think this
is actually supposed to be,like, the computer crimes
division.
Matt (01:00:15):
Because the the, like,
investigation room later has the
same, like LED under lighting.Yeah. Backlit, like, pillar
things with with the gray walls.
Tracy (01:00:26):
Right. And the computer
detective
Matt (01:00:28):
What kind of police
station is this?
Tracy (01:00:31):
It kinda reminds me of
the glow up between Lucifer
season 1 and Lucifer season 2.So Lucifer season 1, she's in,
like, a regular police precinctwith, like, damaged tiles on the
ceiling, and it's kinda crummy. And then season 2, all of a
sudden, it's this huge brickconcept. Open concept building
with glass walls walls andmodern architecture, and that's
(01:00:53):
what this feels like. This iswhat they were going for, I
think.
But, really, it just feels likethis is a corner set. It's just
this corner because there's noceiling either.
Nick (01:01:01):
Mhmm.
Tracy (01:01:02):
And so this pillar
disappears up, which is probably
just there to hold cables. Idon't know what it's there for.
And it's got underlining. Andthen this lady is sitting in her
computer and she's like, oh,yeah. No.
She actually logged in at thattime. Like, she was actually on
the on the Internet. It's fine.Like, I checked. And Nick is
like, well, can we fake that?
And she's like, it'd be hard.
Matt (01:01:23):
But you could.
Tracy (01:01:24):
But you could.
Matt (01:01:26):
Yeah. It's called a VPN.
Yeah.
Tracy (01:01:29):
And They're
Matt (01:01:29):
coming now.
Tracy (01:01:30):
They're coming now. And
Tracy goes, yeah. Well,
according to this paper that Iconveniently have in my hand, if
Lowe's dies, she getseverything. So when he died
business. She got the wholebusiness.
Now that the hardware isdeveloped and it will need no
tweaking and no changes
Matt (01:01:49):
No improvements.
Tracy (01:01:50):
It is perfect, and it is
ready to go into production
right now. And there will be noneed to do any kind of updating
or and I'm lying. I'm joking.That that doesn't happen.
Matt (01:02:01):
She's she's very
shortsighted.
Tracy (01:02:03):
No hardware survives
first contact with the enemy.
Drill because she's apsychopath. Apparently. She
coulda just made the virtualreality game where she got to
kill him at the computer sinceshe's so good at that. So then
Nick and Tracy start fussingbecause Tracy is like, Nick,
please.
I just want you to be mypartner. I want you to help me
(01:02:25):
with this, and then at the end,I want you to do the paperwork.
We already discussed this. Like,I need you on my side, and Nick
is like, no. The clues.
She'd have to be onlinesomewhere to do that, but that's
hard to trace and harder toprove.
God, Nick. Come on.
Nick (01:02:40):
I know. I know. We have no
evidence. K? I I got the same
speech from Reese.
But look at this way. Right now,we have nothing. If there's a
clue or clues in the game, itcan't hurt to keep playing.
Matt (01:02:52):
He cannot say the word
clues without that accent.
Tracy (01:02:56):
A truly stupendous amount
of times. It made me feel like I
was listening to, I think, crimejunkie with the kids because I
am who I am. And they weretalking about semen. They were
like, oh, there was semen on theshoe. And my daughter was like,
what's semen?
And I was like, well, it'sgenetic material that comes from
a man. And, you know, I kinda Iexplained it without having to
(01:03:17):
kinda get in-depth about it. AndI was like, that's fine. They're
never gonna mention it again. And the whole rest of the
episode was like semen semensemen semen semen semen semen
semen.
It was like they just No. Theclues are in the game. I'm
(01:03:39):
telling you. And she's like, what the fuck are you talking
about? Help me to investigatethis crime.
This is my career we're talkingabout. You clearly are
torpedoing your career, but I amstill here, and I'm still trying
to figure this out. And Nick islike, yes. But we have no clues
right now. So we have to, like,we have to look where we can,
(01:04:02):
and where we can is in the game.
And what harm will it do if Ijust play the game for a little
bit? It's fine. Tracy's like,well, it's not really procedure.
Yeah. But, I mean, it's not likethey wrote about VR games in the
handbook because they would justbe brand new slash nonexistent
(01:04:22):
slash just a pair of sunglasseswith a wire.
Matt (01:04:24):
Just think about it like,
oh, there's a serial killer, and
they sent in, like like, apuzzle to the police station.
Yeah. And, oh, if you can solvethis puzzle, it'll be a clue to
catch me.
Tracy (01:04:40):
Yeah. That's what the
zodiac killer did. Yeah.
Matt (01:04:43):
So Nick just needs to
explain it like that. Yeah.
Like, I have a hunch that she's
Tracy (01:04:49):
Playing a psychopath.
Yeah.
Matt (01:04:51):
And, she left a trail of
clues in the video game because
the thrill of the potential ofgetting caught just like, for
example, the Zodiac killer
Tracy (01:05:03):
Yeah.
Matt (01:05:04):
Sent in puzzles to the
police station because
Tracy (01:05:07):
Yeah. It's not unclues.
Existed.
Matt (01:05:09):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:05:10):
Yeah. And instead, he's
Matt (01:05:12):
Reese doesn't have enough
imagination?
Tracy (01:05:14):
No. Nick is being too
skeevy about it. He's like, no.
I think I just need I think Ijust need to play this game,
y'all. Because, look, it takesplace in real life Toronto
locations.
That that's a clue. Right? Andthey're like, no. It's not. What
is wrong with you?
And he's like, well, I say it,and so I'm gonna run. And it's
in my pocket already, so youcan't fucking stop me. And the
(01:05:35):
computer lady is just standingover there, like, okay. So, I
was looking at the game whileyou guys were arguing about
clues, and it says that, it'srandomized. So every time you
play it, it's different.
And it's also self deleting, which means you have one shot to
find out whatever it is, and youhave 12 hours to do it. How does
(01:05:58):
she have access to the sourcecode for the game, but she
can't?
Matt (01:06:01):
She may just have access
to the mainframe and she's
looking at the game files.
Tracy (01:06:07):
Because I feel like you
should just be able to tell who
made these changes and when, andit'd be like, oh, read it
programmed this.
Matt (01:06:13):
That's that is a a common
problem, like version control in
the source code. And Mhmm. A lotof really small, shops don't use
version control.
Tracy (01:06:30):
But they're not small.
Matt (01:06:33):
There's 2 people.
Tracy (01:06:35):
There's the owner and the
co owner, and then there's other
people.
Matt (01:06:37):
Small as in the number of
people writing code.
Tracy (01:06:40):
Oh, okay. I mean, I
guess. I like to think that she
looked in there, and all of thedocumentation was just LaCroix
rants. What is version controlexcept a way of trying to go
back
Matt (01:06:55):
to the main menu where
There's some, like, there's
some, like, dashboard orsomething on the mainframe.
Yeah. Like, here's here's thegame stats for ongoing, like,
game sessions. And, like, here'sthe folder with the files for,
like, the game session that Nickis playing in. And, oh, like,
(01:07:17):
each time he completes a level, the file for that, like, virtual
reality space gets deleted.
Tracy (01:07:24):
Yeah. That makes sense.
Well, Reese calls while they're
in the middle of this and tellsthem both to come in. And Nick's
like, yeah. Okay.
That's really nice, but I reallyneed to get back in the game.
And Tracy We
Matt (01:07:36):
even hear Tracy say, yes.
He's here too or he'll be there
too.
Tracy (01:07:40):
Right. And Tracy's like,
no. Reese insists that you come
in. So we go back, and Rita isat the precinct because Reese
has called her in. And I have toimagine it's just to highlight
to Nick how, like, ridiculoushe's being, but it does not
work.
Because Rita is like, are yousaying I'm here as a suspect
(01:08:03):
because I confessed to you inthe game? The shit are you
talking about? And Nick's like, mhmm. Why did you hide why did
you hide your clues and clues inthe game? And she's like, what?
And he's like, I know you'replaying with me. I know you
killed Low, and I can prove it.And she's like, can I go? Which
(01:08:24):
smart move, Rita. That's exactlywhat you should do.
Matt (01:08:26):
Being detained?
Tracy (01:08:27):
Am I being detained? Can
I call my lawyer? And Nick says,
no, At the same time that Reesesays, yes. And Reese tells Nick
after she leaves, you're closeto getting yourself an
unscheduled vacation. And Nickis like, fuck you.
And he just leaves.
Matt (01:08:44):
Maybe that's what I need.
Tracy (01:08:45):
I'm going. And so they
don't. I he is so erratic in
this episode. And the fact thatReese is never, like, you are
suspended for the next week. Youneed to go home and check your
premises.
Like, you are freaking the fuckout. So You're freaking me out.
You're freaking her out. You'refreaking Tracy out. You are
torpedoing this case.
And Nick, no. He does never saythat. He's just, like, careful,
(01:09:07):
Nick. And Nick's like, I'm gonnabe fucking careful. I'm gonna be
fucking careful all the way backhome.
Matt (01:09:11):
What stands out to me is
that all of this back and forth
in and out of the station overand over and over again is all
happening in one night. Yeah.Because he has 12 hours for the
game.
Tracy (01:09:22):
Yeah.
Matt (01:09:22):
And so that's 1 night
shit.
Tracy (01:09:24):
Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah. Reese is like, where areyou going? And he's like, fuck.
Go. So he just leaves.
And where he's actually
Nick (01:09:32):
I'm going
Matt (01:09:33):
to play video games in my
room.
Tracy (01:09:34):
I'll go home to my play
video game, dad. So he goes
actually where he goes. It's thereal life boudoir where he was
in the video game. He recognizedit. He knows right where it is,
and he goes right to him.
Matt (01:09:44):
I've been there. I've made
out with, like, a lady here
before.
Tracy (01:09:47):
Nick knows a boudoir.
Okay? He even he even calls it a
boudoir.
Matt (01:09:51):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:09:52):
This a boudoir is that's
where he goes. So he goes and
he's, like, looking around, andthen he sees the door that he
leaves through in the game, andso he walks in there, and
there's a silver skull. Oh mygod. There's actually a clue.
And so he picks it up and, putsit in his pocket because he
immediately goes to the nextlocation, which is some kind of
(01:10:12):
terminal.
He says it's something BC Placeor something. I'm not from
Toronto. Someone's probablygonna be like, it's this. And
you know what? Thank you.
I really appreciate that. Iheard it from all the way over
here, but I can't repeat it. Sohe goes to this terminal, and he
puts on the glasses again toplay. He does not need to
specifically be in thislocation, but here we are. He's
(01:10:34):
here.
And Rita is already there, andshe's like, wow. Good job. You
already found this call. But thechallenges are going to get a
lot harder. And, Megan overthere is all for you.
So Megan, in question, isheading up the escalator, And
he's like, oh, hell yeah. So heruns over there, and she's like,
(01:10:54):
no. No. And she pulls out across. And he ends up, zooming
away, getting around behind her,and killing her.
And I have to imagine, at whatpoint was Rita like, wow, he is
surprisingly good at this for acop.
Matt (01:11:10):
His his vampire neck bite
technique is impeccable for a
human detective.
Tracy (01:11:17):
Yeah. Wow. Okay. But,
she's too into her game, I
guess, because he, he does allof this at the station. I
because he starts out on oneside, and when he comes back
after he's killed the lady,Megan, and he is grabbing this
fence, he rips the glasses off,and he is vamped out at the
(01:11:41):
station and he's over by thatthat fence.
So he must have walked acrossthe station while he was wearing
the glasses, and there's lots ofpeople here. And he's like,
whew. Wow. Okay. He pullshimself together, and he's like,
where would it be?
Ah, in this potted plant overhere.
Nick (01:11:59):
And so he just walks over
and he's
Tracy (01:12:00):
like Seems like such
Matt (01:12:01):
a weird place to put,
like, the clue.
Tracy (01:12:05):
It had the clue. It has
nothing to do with anything that
he's doing. He's just like,okay. I'm by this fence. There's
a potted plant by this fence.
Okay. I mean, the first onekinda made sense because it was
through the door. This onedoesn't make a ton of sense. I
don't know. But he takes theclues back to Tracy, and he's
like, look.
I found a skull and a piece ofpaper. I think they're clues.
(01:12:29):
And Tracy is like, Nick, you arenot okay right now. Reese is
going to blow important bloodvessels. That's what she says.
Nick, is this your idea
of a joke?
Nick (01:12:44):
Rita said I'd find what I
was looking for if I kept
playing the game.
Tracy (01:12:47):
Rita in the game? Right.
Right. Nick, Reese is going to
blow an important blood vesselif you don't stop pushing this.
And the computer lady is
standing there because she's
with she's apparently assignedto Tracy for this entire night.
Mhmm. And she says, maybe weshould try something different.
She's trying to be the, disinterested third party that
(01:13:09):
can redirect Nick's vibes rightnow.
Matt (01:13:11):
Mhmm.
Tracy (01:13:12):
And he turns to her, and
he actually hypnotizes her into
agreeing with him.
Matt (01:13:16):
He's like In front of,
Tracy (01:13:19):
Tracy
Matt (01:13:20):
Natalie and Tracy.
Tracy (01:13:21):
In the middle of the
precinct. He's just like, no.
I'm right. You know I'm right.Tell Tracy I'm right.
And the lady's like, he's right. And Natalie is like, oh, hell
no. Because she's standing rightthere, and she sees the whole
thing. And she's like, can wetalk in private? And he's like,
can it wait?
And she goes, I don't think itcan.
(01:13:42):
Could we have a private
chat? Can it wait? Absolutely
not.
Nick (01:13:49):
I really don't have time
for this.
Tracy (01:13:53):
What the hell is wrong
with you? Tracy was right there.
You hypnotized a cop right infront of her.
Nick (01:13:58):
Yeah. I know. I shouldn't
have.
Tracy (01:13:59):
Shouldn't have?
Nick (01:14:01):
Look. There's been a
murder. No one seems to wanna
solve it but me.
Tracy (01:14:03):
I mean, no one wants to
do it your way through that
game.
Nick (01:14:06):
It's the only way.
Tracy (01:14:08):
I love how sassy Natalie
is
Matt (01:14:10):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:14:10):
In season 3.
Matt (01:14:11):
She's like, slap slap. Get
your act together. She's
Tracy (01:14:13):
like, the fuck. Line. The
fuck, Nick? In the middle of the
precinct? And he's like, well, Imean, I I needed her to agree
with me.
She's like, what is wrong withyou? And he's like, well, was it
that wrong? I got away with it.And Natalie's like, you get to
kill in this game, don't you?And you fucking like it.
Thank you, Natalie. You justjust write out me.
Matt (01:14:35):
Right to the
Tracy (01:14:36):
Just just right to the
Matt (01:14:37):
core of the issue.
Tracy (01:14:38):
Love it. Fucking love it.
And Nick is, like, I mean, I
don't you know, you're not mymom. It's about the clues. And
Nick Nick is, like, well,whatever.
And so he takes the game home.He storms off. He takes the game
home. He goes over to hisfridge. He pulls out a bottle of
blood, and he's like, okay.
I am going in. I am not lettingthis game control my life, but
(01:15:00):
I'm going to play it literallyevery second of the day that I
possibly can. And this kindareminds me of season 1 when we
would have the Euro minutes.
Reese (01:15:08):
Mhmm.
Tracy (01:15:09):
What are you looking up?
Matt (01:15:12):
His middle name.
Tracy (01:15:13):
Rabant.
Matt (01:15:15):
I'm looking in the, like,
fan lore. Okay. If there's if
there's a reference to what hisactual middle name is.
Tracy (01:15:24):
Well, this kinda reminds
me of season 1 when we would
have the Euro minutes. And everyonce in a while, it would be
like, I'm going to go home inthe middle of my shift, put on
my black silk pajamas, and I'mgoing to think while putt
putting.
Matt (01:15:36):
Or throwing playing cards.
Tracy (01:15:37):
Or throwing playing cards
or playing chess or bouncing the
ball against the wall orwhatever. He had a series of
ones that he would do. Oh, Imiss season 1. Anyway so this
kinda feels like that becausehe's like, I'm back home. I'm
back in the precinct.
I'm back home. I'm back in theprecinct. So he goes back to
back home. He drinks a littleblood. He's like, okay.
I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine.I'm fine. I'm fine.
I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm gonnaplay the game. And then he goes
(01:15:58):
to play in front of hisfireplace because this is the
only acceptable what place toplay a virtual reality vampire
game. And LaCroix shows up.
And LaCroix is like, hi, Nick. How's it going? I brought you a
present, and it's a bottle ofhuman blood. And he says, it's a
bit young, but it's still got anearthy flavor and a smooth
(01:16:20):
finish. He describes it likewine.
Matt (01:16:22):
Oh, yeah.
Tracy (01:16:22):
And Nick takes it, like
Reluctantly. Okay. Fine. And so
he takes it from him. AndLaCroix is like, so I've been
sensing that, you are I mean, like, I've just been having the
weirdest dreams, and they'reabout you being all vampire
again.
(01:16:44):
Am am I really dreaming, Nick? And Nick actually opens the
human blood and drinks it, andthen he's like, I'm fine. I'm
fine. I'm fine. But, also, I'vebeen playing this video game,
and video games, it turns out, makes people violent.
Did you know that? Lacroix islike, okay. So this game is what
has rekindled your vampire ness, and Nick is like, I'm doing it
(01:17:07):
to solve a crime, dad. AndLaquaza's like, yeah. Mhmm.
Yep. That's very nice. So haveyou killed in this game? And
Nick's like, I don't I don'tknow. Yeah.
It's for the clues. It's for thecues. And, like, why goes, well,
that's impressive, you know, andI approve. Yeah. I'm so glad
(01:17:27):
this game that, I I mean, thatthat was made is helping you to
come back to me.
Matt (01:17:34):
I'm so glad this game that
this is the first time hearing
of it is is helping you, slowlycome back to to our side of
things.
Tracy (01:17:42):
Yeah. And then he just
dips. This is, like, the third
bottle of human blood he's givenNick in, like, several episodes.
And then he's like, yeah. So I'mjust gonna leave that with you,
and I'm gonna go.
But you know what? Have fun inyour game. And then he just
leaves through the skylight, Iassume, because skylights are
the natural means of ingress andegress for all vampires. And so
(01:18:06):
I didn't even point out that in,dead of night when Nick breaks
into the mansion the first timeoh, no. When he breaks into the,
building where the guy is deadof fright, he breaks into the
skylight.
Matt (01:18:18):
He, like,
Tracy (01:18:19):
shatters the skylight. So
then Nick goes back in, and now
we're in a
Matt (01:18:23):
And I wanted to highlight.
Okay. When Natalie is chewing
Nick out Yeah. She makesreference to the numerous
setbacks we've had recently.
Tracy (01:18:34):
Oh, is that is that,
like, a reference to a previous
episode?
Matt (01:18:40):
Like like demon
possession?
Tracy (01:18:41):
Like demon possession and
the the thing where you lost
your memory, and then there werethe ghosts. And oh, thank you
for pointing that out. Good goodeye.
Matt (01:18:52):
Continuity.
Tracy (01:18:53):
Yeah. Nick has
effectively abandoned his his
desire to become human at thispoint just in favor of, a never
ending series of shenanigans.
Matt (01:19:02):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:19:02):
Because he goes back into
the game, and now we're in this
factory slash warehouse thingy. And Nick almost gets killed by
an attacker, and he ends uphunting around the facility with
his mouth open the whole time. Imean, these fangs are bigger
than his normal fangs, so maybehe was, like, at a heart attack.
Matt (01:19:20):
He closed his mouth. Yeah.
Tracy (01:19:21):
He's also heavy
breathing, and I encourage
everyone to listen to this scenewith some really good headphones
on because it's louder than thebackground music. It's like
Matt (01:19:32):
And it's not it's not
synchronized with the video. No.
So so this is like a voice over.
Tracy (01:19:40):
Yeah. Some Foley artist
had to be like
Matt (01:19:44):
So so we're seeing, like,
the video game version of Nick
move around. Yeah. But I thinkthe the heavy breathing is
coming from Nick in the realworld.
Tracy (01:19:54):
I don't wanna know.
Twaying. I don't wanna know this
is Gare heavy breathing to themicrophone. But he comes back to
himself, after he kills this guyin the video game. And then he's
like, well, look.
There's human blood on the tablebecause he's already forgotten
Lacroix was there. So he drinksthe human blood and that
Lacroix, quote, left. And thenhe goes straight to that factory
(01:20:16):
or slash warehouse. Now theboudoir, I get. The terminal, I
get.
But how did he know whichspecific factory slash warehouse
this was so that he could justgo there? I mean, he's been in a
couple. He's in that one. He'sin one in the episode.
Matt (01:20:35):
Maybe in the video game,
he just, like, opened up the
the, like, quest menu.
Tracy (01:20:41):
And it And it listed it?
Matt (01:20:43):
So it has the location
name?
Tracy (01:20:45):
He's in 1 in in dead
issue because that's the one
where Stonetree's friend, kinkshames his wife, and they end up
having a showdown in a factory.
Matt (01:21:00):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:21:00):
And then he's in one
again in Hunted, which is the
one with the
Matt (01:21:03):
ripper 1?
Tracy (01:21:04):
No. The unnamed unnamed
hunter is after him, and she
catches his safety.
Matt (01:21:09):
He is in one in the Jack
the Ripper episode. Yeah.
Because that's where the, like, new detective dies.
Tracy (01:21:16):
So he's been in his fan
number, I guess. So maybe he's a
connoisseur. He's like, oh,that's the one where I got
attacked with Stonetree, butthat's the one where I saved
Skanky. It must be this one. So,anyway, he goes straight there,
and he just walks through it.
I don't know how he gets in. Itdoesn't matter. And then all of
a sudden, he's like, oh, look.Upon the floor, there are some
cues that just been left there.
Matt (01:21:37):
Okay. So these especially
in this one, like, there's
employees walking around. Thisis an active, like, industrial
facility.
Tracy (01:21:47):
Yes.
Matt (01:21:49):
And there's just shit on
the floor. Otherwise, it's
pristine. They're keeping itvery clean. And some employees
just walked by. Yeah.
Why didn't why aren't theypicking up this stuff on the
floor? I'm wondering how didRita place these items here? I
(01:22:11):
because I think part of thechallenge that she's, like,
setting out for these clues isit would be difficult for just a
regular person to get into theseplaces. But I guess she knows
that it's a detective, playingthe game, so they can just flash
the badge. But how did she getin?
(01:22:33):
Maybe oh, oh, I guess, any ofthese places any of these
places, they would have had to,like, scan. They would have had
to map them to make the gamearea, that virtual space in the
game video game. So they I guessher company would have had some
(01:22:55):
kind of contract with theselocations to say, hey. We want
to use your your industrialfactory space
Tracy (01:23:03):
Right.
Matt (01:23:04):
As a virtual area in our
video game, so we need access to
it to, play whatever.
Tracy (01:23:11):
Yeah.
Matt (01:23:12):
So I guess Rita could have
said, hey. I need to go, like,
check some details on this areafor the whole video game thing.
You remember that? Yeah. I justneed to go check on something.
Nick (01:23:24):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:23:24):
And I'm gonna leave this
stuff behind. Don't touch it, k.
Thanks. Bye.
Matt (01:23:27):
Yeah. I just need to leave
this here for a few minutes.
Yeah. Don't move it.
Tracy (01:23:32):
Okay. You feel better
about it now?
Matt (01:23:34):
I feel better about it
now.
Tracy (01:23:35):
Okay. So he ends up
finding an hourglass and a
nightstick to join the list ofclues. They're just there on the
floor. And, okay. So then hetakes that back to the precinct,
and Tracy's like, great.
Matt (01:23:50):
Thanks, Nick. More
collectibles from your video
game?
Tracy (01:23:53):
Yeah. That's what Reese
says. Reese is like, oh, look.
More collectibles from the junk
shop? Captain thinks
you've lost it.
Nick (01:23:58):
And you think he's right.
Well
Reese (01:24:01):
More collectibles from
the novelty shop, Luke?
Nick (01:24:04):
I know how you think this
looks. Listen. I can drop this
game right now if you want meto, but I swear Rita Scott walks
if I do.
Tracy (01:24:12):
Is everybody? I mean, I
get it. Okay. I mean, I know.
Nick didn't come to this from aplace that really felt very
healthy.
But at this point, he's actuallyfinding shit. He found an
hourglass on the floor at awarehouse, and they're like,
well, I mean, yeah, that's howthey time thing. That's what the
Matt (01:24:31):
Okay. So what if, they
choose interesting words for the
items? Yeah. And it feels alittle contrived when they
finally say, oh, it's ananagram. May maybe it's a
riddle.
Maybe it's what do all of thesethings have in common?
Tracy (01:24:53):
Right.
Matt (01:24:54):
Like
Tracy (01:24:54):
No. They go straight to
anagram. Straight to anagram.
Matt (01:24:57):
Straight to anagram. Yeah.
Okay. Great. Maybe each of these
items has, like, one of thelittle label maker, like,
sticker things
Tracy (01:25:10):
on it. So they know what
to call it. So they know what to
call it. Well, the the point atthis point is that Tracy and
Reese are still, like, you'rebeing fucking ridiculous. But,
honestly, he is finding shit.
Like, why was it
Matt (01:25:25):
making progress.
Tracy (01:25:26):
Right. I mean, the skull,
you can kinda be like, oh, maybe
it was left over from Halloweendecorations at this museum that
has this boudoir in it. Butalso, like, why was there an o
type blood bag label shoved in apotted plant? And then he finds
a it's not a nightstick. Theycall it a truncheon.
He finds a truncheon and anhourglass on the floor at a
(01:25:48):
factory, and they're all like, god, Nick. Give it up. So just
so we're clear, Tracy is Tracyand Reese are shaming Nick for
at least attempting toinvestigate this.
Matt (01:26:00):
And, usually, this level
of criticism of Nick's, like,
technique is, like, over a fewdays. They feel like he's
wasting time. But for him tosay, hey. The video game that
the dead guy was playing Yeah.It still has an active session
(01:26:20):
with a countdown.
We have 12 hours to play throughthis game, like, because I
logged in, and it said, this is,like, a limited time thing.
Yeah. You have one chance. Andthen our computer ops detective
has confirmed that the game isdeleting itself as it gets
(01:26:41):
played. Yeah.
Okay. Let's spend one whole, like, work day.
Tracy (01:26:45):
Let me work this through.
Let me work through this.
Matt (01:26:47):
Let me follow this lead to
the end
Tracy (01:26:49):
They find the guy
Matt (01:26:50):
so I can discard it.
Tracy (01:26:51):
They find the guy within
4 hours, and then Nick has it
solved in 12 hours. From thetime this man dies to the time
this murder is solved is 16hours. Nick solves a case in 16
hours, and we don't even need anadditional murder to solve the
case. This is the mostsuccessful he has been
investigating a murder in, like,7 episodes. And yet they're all
(01:27:16):
like, Nick, god.
Get your head in the game. Hishead is in the game. That's
literally what he's doing. I canunderstand at the very beginning
when they're all upset at himbecause he's being really hinky
about it. I get it.
But then by this point, he'sactually finding shit. What do
you like, he says, what do wehave to lose trying to go
through this? Like, let me seewhat happens. Let me chase my
(01:27:38):
tail for a little bit. Maybe Ifind nothing.
Maybe I find something, but thisis timed. This is that Right.
But This is
Matt (01:27:45):
a The lady is not running
away.
Tracy (01:27:48):
This is a collectibles
quest in a video game. Yeah. You
know, the collectibles quest inthe video game that's like, oh,
no. I don't have a preservative.This stew will go bad in 2
minutes.
You have to get it from thisside of the video game map to
that side of the video game map. This is what's happening right
now except when it runs out, hedoesn't get a second chance to
Matt (01:28:07):
take the stew again.
Right.
Tracy (01:28:08):
I just wanna put that out
there. He's being ridiculous,
but he's not being as ridiculousas they're making him out to
seem.
Matt (01:28:15):
Right. It's it's not what
he's doing. It's the way he's
doing it.
Tracy (01:28:18):
Yeah. I mean, if Tracy's
bothered, she could follow-up on
ballistics. Nick isn't. We neverfigure out ballistics. We don't
look into it at all.
That gun is owned by someone.
Matt (01:28:27):
Nick just says, here's the
gun. It should match the
ballistics.
Tracy (01:28:31):
Yeah. Okay. Oh, alright.
That's fine. But Reese is like,
you're being ridiculous.
These virtual clues areridiculous. Actually, Reese is
like clues because Reese is, Ithink, actually American. So
he's, like, yeah. No. These areridiculous.
You're being ridiculous. AndNick's, like, cool. Yeah.
Whatever. I gotta get to thenext level, and Nick Reese goes,
(01:28:52):
you are on the next level, Nick.
You are next level weird rightnow.
Matt (01:28:58):
No. No. I'm not. And
Nick's like I literally need to
get to the next level in thevideo game.
Tracy (01:29:02):
In the video game. So
Nick's like, fucking fine. And
so he just leaves. And he leavesReese and his partner at the
precinct so he can go home, havea little snacky, and then play
some more video games. And sohe's like, oh, look another
factory.
Because he goes immediately backinto the video game and he's
back in another factory. Andthis time there's a guy standing
there and he's like, I light across on fire. And Nick is like,
(01:29:23):
oh, yay.
Matt (01:29:24):
And that bunch of ninjas
come out with him with swords.
Tracy (01:29:31):
Yes. And there's a
magical disappearing antagonist.
A guy comes at him with swords. He ends up electrocuting the
guy. Actually, I think theninjas were in the last factory.
In this one, he electrocutes theguy, but doesn't work.
Matt (01:29:44):
Okay.
Tracy (01:29:45):
And he ends up flying
around the warehouse. And I have
to wonder, was flight a part ofthe original programming? Or did
Nick do that? And then it justcopied it like it It coded on
the fly for him that he's flyingaround in this video game.
Because I want in real life forhim to have flown and banged his
head on the ceiling.
Matt (01:30:04):
His own ceiling in his
apartment.
Tracy (01:30:05):
Not actually here.
Matt (01:30:08):
Yeah. He just went through
the skylight.
Tracy (01:30:11):
But he ends up killing
the guy or whatever. And we go
back to the precinct becauseTracy and the computer lady and
Reese are really trying to wraptheir head around what the fuck
is going on right now. And thelady's like, the computer lady
is like, well, you know, peoplereally like video games and the
Internet. I mean, people aredoing it. They're going out on
(01:30:32):
it because it gives themsomething to do, and it's kind
of an ego boost when you winthese games, especially when
you're playing against somebodyelse.
And maybe this lady is justhooked on her own game. Maybe
she's hooked on the ego boost ofbeing the winner.
Matt (01:30:48):
The thrill of the risk of
being caught.
Tracy (01:30:51):
Yeah. And maybe we should
just believe Nick for, like, 2
seconds and see what happens. Imean, I was hypnotized into this
opinion, but also maybe weshould just give it a shot,
because she is our only suspect, our only suspect.
Matt (01:31:08):
Tracy says she's our only
suspect with a motive. Actually,
she's our only suspect.
Tracy (01:31:13):
Yeah. So maybe a minute,
we just pretend Nick is right.
And if after an hour like, I'lltell you, you have 10 minutes,
and then we're gonna move on.Let's give this an hour and just
see how it plays out. And in themeantime, Nick is, like, still
looking around.
He's actually found the secondwarehouse just from the video
game. He's like, oh, yeah. Ielectrocuted a guy in that
(01:31:35):
warehouse before. I'm gonna goback there. And Tracy is like,
okay.
Well, maybe these are actuallyclues, but if they're actually
clues, maybe they're a gamewithin a game. And Nick finds a
noose. I don't know how he justfinds these things, because
they're not really tied toanything that's happening in the
game. Maybe he smells her. Yeah.
Smells Rita. Maybe. Let's gowith that. Because he finds the
(01:31:57):
noose and then he finds a knife. And then he comes back down to
pull out his cell phone to makea phone call, which there's no
way anyone's making a phone callinside all of this metal,
especially not in 1995 when youhad the service of, like, I
can't even describe how bad theservice was.
Like, you there's no way youwere inside a building and you
made a phone call. And the onething that kind of I don't I
(01:32:19):
like Garrett as an actor justfine. But when you watch a lot
of his stuff, you get deep intoa lot of his mannerisms. And he
has this, I'm being reallyserious right now, jaw thing
where he, like, sticks his jawout and, like, moves it side to
side. He does that a lot in thisepisode along with the heavy
breathing.
And so every time he does it,I'm like, oh, there he is. But,
like, oh, yeah. I'm doing realserious right now. Anyway, he
(01:32:42):
pulls out the he doesn'tactually pull the cell phone out
to call them yet. He goes backin the game.
He's like, well, I don't havemuch time left. I gotta get back
in the game. So he puts the gameheadset on, which, again, this
is a digital cell phone. There'sno way this is connecting to the
Internet from here, but it'sfine. And there's Rita, and
she's like, oh, no.
You can't get to the next leveluntil you figure out the clues.
(01:33:04):
And he's like, oh, damn it. It'san anagram, and she's like, yes.
She kinda confirms it's ananagram, which is helpful
because Yeah. Then you're like,oh, okay.
That's why they went thereimmediately and sort of stayed
there. And so he logs off, andthen he calls Tracy, and he's
like, okay. I found 2 moreclues. I found a noose, and I
found a jackknife specifically.Not just a knife.
(01:33:25):
Thank goodness. They realizeit's a jackknife. Otherwise, we
couldn't have gotten to our j.
Matt (01:33:30):
Right.
Tracy (01:33:31):
And that it's a trench
and not a nightstick. Anyway,
it's fine. It doesn't reallymatter. Who cares? Why are we
nitpicking about this particularis this the worst part of this
episode?
No. So he's like, okay. Here'sthe last clues, and they're
like, alright. Great. We'regonna figure this out.
So Nick writes down the clues ona piece of paper. They put
theirs into a computer program.
Matt (01:33:52):
A computer program which
is not helpful.
Tracy (01:33:58):
My favorite part favorite
part is the rotating dice
picture, the movingthree-dimensional dice. And
Tracy's like, oh, what does thathave to do with it? And the lady
goes, we get bored. Like, Iprogrammed this for fun, and I
just threw that in for shits andgiggles, obviously. Oh.
Matt (01:34:19):
Okay.
Tracy (01:34:19):
Okay. Okay. And so Nick
figures it out in 2 steps. He's
like, do do do. Ah, SaintJohn's.
Oh, okay. Great. It's a church, and he goes, a church. And then
we pan out to outside, and wefind out that the sun is also on
the rise. So it's day now, andhe has to go to a church.
And so while he's driving to thechurch, because he figures this
(01:34:41):
out, like, immediately, it takesthem a really they're like, how
about first letters? And Tracygoes, no. Too e too obvious. And
so then they go through
Matt (01:34:52):
really Tracy.
Tracy (01:34:53):
They go through a whole
bunch of different and they're
like, could it be a place? Couldit be a proper name? And Reese
makes a crack about, oh, yeah. Iwas at, like, the other day or
whatever. So an animal helpful.
Matt (01:35:07):
This is a common thing you
do. Like, if you're in a
computer programming class, it'slike, okay. Make a program that,
like, combine does all thecombinations of all these
letters in every order and matchthem up against, like,
dictionary words Yeah. And scorethem as, like, how well they
(01:35:28):
match. And then print out a listof all the matching dictionary
words for this anagram.
Right. We didn't get anythinglike that.
Tracy (01:35:37):
No. Well, there's no
Internet, so she's probably not
running this from an remoteserver. She probably has it on a
floppy disk.
Matt (01:35:46):
Yeah. And she but you can
fit the whole dictionary, like,
the whole, like, 10,000 words inthe English dictionary
Tracy (01:35:55):
Honestly, the
Matt (01:35:55):
on one of these old
computers quibble. In small
space. It's not
Tracy (01:35:59):
The the thing for me is
we don't eliminate the first
letters first.
Matt (01:36:04):
Right.
Tracy (01:36:05):
We're immediately, like,
nope. Too obvious.
Matt (01:36:08):
Because they need to draw
out.
Tracy (01:36:09):
Start with the obvious.
Matt (01:36:11):
They need to delay
Tracy (01:36:12):
the Figuring it out.
Matt (01:36:14):
In the Yeah. Precinct.
Yeah.
Tracy (01:36:15):
In the most, Nick is
clearly the better cop in this
scenario. That's how you cantell this was directed by
Garrett Wyndavies, because Nickgoes total cowboy, and he's
right. And he figures it outbefore everybody else, and he
catches the bad guy, and hedenies his own nature and
overcomes his baser urges. He's,like, the hero in this episode.
(01:36:39):
Yeah.
Yeah. Because he drives over tothe church, and he has to run
into the church while he's allsmoky and whatever because it's
day. And he makes it in. Hethrows his jacket off very
dramatically, and then he comesin and puts on okay. She's just
sitting over in the chair.
If he had not put his VR glasseson immediately, he would have
(01:37:02):
just seen her sitting up front. But instead, he's like, no. I
gotta solve this in the game. And so he puts he puts the
glasses on and the gloves. AndRita shows up, and she's wearing
a different outfit this time.
And she's like, oh, good job.You figured it out. The murder
weapon is somewhere in thechurch. Matt goes, oh, it's in
the holy water font. And so Nickin the Nick in the game looks
(01:37:26):
over at the holy water font, andshe's like, ah, yes.
Good choice. Meanwhile, Reeseand Tracy and the computer lady
are like, oh, maybe it's thesecond letter and then the third
letter and then the 4th letterand then the 5th letter, and it
makes a whole sentence. And it'sthey're like not getting it. And
(01:37:48):
this is the most not cringebecause I hate the word cringe,
but this is the most secondhandembarrassing section of this
entire of this entire episodebecause she's like, oh, very
good job, detective. And hegoes, in here, I'm not a
detective.
You can call me Nicholas deBrabant. Yes. But you'll never
(01:38:10):
get to it.
Nick (01:38:12):
Oh, I'm not a detective in
here. Here, I'm a vampire. You
may call me Nicholas de Bravo.
Tracy (01:38:20):
That's the whole point of
games like this, Nicholas de
Bravo. People can be anythingthey want to be, except who they
are.
Matt (01:38:33):
I am a vampire. I am
Tracy (01:38:34):
a vampire. So from her
perspective, this detective
started playing this game andwas really fucking into it,
like, so fucking into it. Andthen by the time he shows up at
this church, he's like, no. Ireally am a vampire, and this
give. Can you not tell by my sexappeal?
He's just like, no. I'm realvampire. Oh, I'm Nicholas de
(01:38:55):
Brabant. Then she's like, okay.I'm really glad I'm gonna shoot
you now because you're scarierthan I am.
Matt (01:39:02):
Which it could be
perceived as, like, encouraging
for her because she's like, myVR business is gonna make so
much money.
Tracy (01:39:11):
Yeah. He got real real
into this.
Matt (01:39:13):
Oh, yeah.
Tracy (01:39:14):
And she tells him people
can be anyone they want to be in
here, except who they actuallyare, except he's actually being
who he is.
Matt (01:39:21):
He is what he actually is.
Tracy (01:39:22):
It's fine. Okay. Alright.
It's fine. Everyone wants to be
someone they aren't.
And who do you wanna be? And shegoes, I am exactly what I wanna
be, and that's the winner. Andthen she shoots him. Shoots him
in real life. Pew pew.
Because she's only got half ofthe goggles on, so she can,
Matt (01:39:39):
like, close my eyes.
Reality.
Tracy (01:39:41):
Yeah. Okay. Fine. So she
shoots him with the murder
weapon.
Matt (01:39:44):
And In game, she shoots
him with a crossbow. Yeah. And
in the real world, she shootshim with a gun.
Tracy (01:39:50):
Right. Which a good thing
he wasn't so into it that he
killed himself with, like, psychosomatic. Like, I thought
it was a crossbow. So she shootshim, like, 3 more times, and
she's like, He's dead, which isthe second episode where people
shoot him, think he's dead, andthen he comes back and ends up
touching the bad guy. It's fine.
Matt (01:40:07):
Which yet another person
who's
Tracy (01:40:11):
Yeah. At least he
hypnotizes it out of her. Only
you didn't see me like
Matt (01:40:17):
this, though. See me like
this.
Tracy (01:40:18):
Not you shot me, and I
seem to be okay. Right.
Matt (01:40:20):
No. So she still remembers
shooting him, like, 4 or 5
times. Right. And then he got upand wasn't bleeding.
Tracy (01:40:28):
Right. He gets up, and he
he says, if you're playing a
game, you should know who you'replaying against. And then he's,
like, like, fighting withhimself to not bite this lady
because, he's gotten real realinto this game. It it it
provided the hobby that Natalietold him he
Matt (01:40:46):
should do. Reawakening old
reflexes.
Tracy (01:40:49):
Again. Just again. So
then he turns around. He's like,
okay. You didn't see me.
You didn't see anyone oranything flying. You're gonna
wash my car later. No. Wait. That's an earlier episode.
You didn't see me turn into avampire. You definitely didn't
see me turn into a vampire. Andshe's like, okay. And then, of
course, Reese and Tracy show upright now because, they finally
(01:41:14):
figured out the anagram.Congratulations.
They're like, John Street? Theygo John Street, and then Reese
goes, no. Saint John. So it'sprobably a John Street, so good
thing one of them was like, oh,no. It's a church.
A church in the vampire game.
Matt (01:41:29):
Okay. So in this
situation, they're in the
church. Yeah. Nick Nick has her.Tracy puts handcuffs on her and
walks her out.
And Nick's like, you go ahead, guys. I I'm just gonna
Tracy (01:41:45):
I'm gonna pray for a
little bit.
Matt (01:41:46):
I'm gonna sit down here
for a little bit, and, and then
I'll just go home.
Tracy (01:41:50):
You're like, why does it
smell like barbecue in here? Oh,
no. No reason. Yeah. He's stuckin this church all day.
Matt (01:41:56):
Yeah. Unless he covers
himself up again and
Tracy (01:42:00):
runs up his car. Church,
so there's not iconography
everywhere. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe hegets out later.
Maybe Natalie comes and driveshim to home in the trunk. I
don't know. And Tracy gets theline, Rita, there's no get out
of jail where you're going. Andshe's like, maybe not, but
that's okay as long as there's agame to play. A channeled or,
(01:42:23):
again, I don't
Matt (01:42:24):
know.
Tracy (01:42:24):
Yeah. And then we do 100%
accurate. Thank you. Okay. Well,
they're like, I am addicted tothe game.
Okay. Whatever. So we go back tothe to the loft, and Natalie's
in her sassy red shirt. I lovethis shirt so much. And Nick,
like, what?
Hang on. This whole episode,he's wearing, like, a black
(01:42:47):
button down shirt, black pants, and then this black overcoat.
And then all of a sudden, he'slike, what if and now I'm just
spitballing here. What if Ilooked a little bit like Steve
Jobs, but not, like, exactlylike Steve Jobs? Like, I went
blue shirt instead of blackshirt.
And then that would be a tie into the whole tech development
thing, and we could, like, makeit about how Apple is evil and
(01:43:07):
shit. Okay? Which, like, agreed, but also, what what were they
doing in 95? Because we they hadalmost died out. We don't get
the renaissance of Apple untilwe get the colored the colored
Imacs.
Actually, we just looked it up,and Steve Jobs might have not
been with Apple at this point. He leaves for a little while,
(01:43:29):
and then they're kind offloundering. And he's like,
alright. Fine. I'll come back.
And then he comes back andeffectively saves the company,
which kinda sounds like a herostory, but I don't know. Look
Steve Jobs up. Make your owndecisions. So Nick Nick is
wearing a, turtleneck tuckedtucked into a pair of jeans, and
these are both actually tightand slightly form fitting, which
(01:43:52):
is the closest we will ever, ever, ever, ever get to seeing
what Garrett Wind Davies lookslike without clothes on. On
purpose, apparently, accordingto his Playgirl article.
Matt (01:44:05):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:44:06):
What did he call it?
Wanna stay classy so I don't
show my assy or something likethat. It's so really weird,
like, the way he phrases it. Sohe's like, no. Basically, I I'm
not confident enough to be nude.
Like, I get it. It's fine. Ialso don't put videos of myself
on the Internet. Certainly don'tput videos of myself out onto
television where I am shirtless.Although that's different
(01:44:27):
because I have, you know, I havesecondary sex characteristics on
my top half.
He does not. He could beshirtless on television. Yeah.
And yet and yet here we are. It's Victorian.
If I see his ankles, I get allexcited. So we I guess that
works. You know? He's createdthe a scarcity mentality. We're
just happy to have what we get.
Matt (01:44:48):
He's, controlling the
market.
Tracy (01:44:50):
Yeah. And Natalie is
standing there with the glasses,
and she's like, what are yougonna do with them? And he's
like, I don't know. Maybe we'llkeep them. Like, let's think
about keeping them.
I mean, there's no if they shutthe mainframe down, there's
nothing Right.
Matt (01:44:59):
Yeah. There's not all
they're just an interface.
Tracy (01:45:02):
Yeah. Yeah. And Natalie's
like, okay. But, like, I got
really scared because I knewwhat they meant to you. They
thought you were just beingweird and investigating the
crime.
I knew you were just being weird
Matt (01:45:16):
You were fulfilling
Tracy (01:45:18):
edging towards homicidal.
Matt (01:45:20):
Yeah. These fantasies of
actually killing people.
Tracy (01:45:22):
Yeah. Because I know
you're a serial killer, and this
was giving you the the thrill, like the serial killer buzz.
This was entertaining your darkpassenger in a way you haven't
done in a really long time, andit freaked me the fuck out. And
he's like, alright. Fine.
Do whatever you want with him.So she tosses them in the fire.
Is there a lithium battery inthese?
Matt (01:45:44):
Oh, I don't know what.
Tracy (01:45:45):
What type of battery was
powering these?
Matt (01:45:48):
It wouldn't have been a
lithium battery, but it would
have been some kind of chemicalbattery that could explode.
Tracy (01:45:54):
Yeah. I don't know. It
doesn't matter. It's fine. It's
a gas fireplace.
You can burn anything in those. It's perfectly fine. So she
throws them in there, and thenwe, like, zoom in on them as
they're melting. And that's theend. Thank goodness he has
Natalie to be his exterior Andthey need to turn it on and been
(01:46:18):
like, where'd the game go?
And then
Matt (01:46:21):
I need my fix.
Tracy (01:46:22):
And then he buys virtual
dimensions, and he hasn't put it
up just for him.
Matt (01:46:28):
Who's to say he didn't
anyway?
Tracy (01:46:30):
I know. And LaCroix is
like, yes. I know. Maybe he had
a backup pair. Yeah.
There was that other pair thatshe was wearing that had, like,
half the glasses and half notthe glasses. So there's other
pairs of these. Maybe he waslike, yeah. Burn those. And then
there's another room in thewarehouse that has, like, 6
pairs and a server and just aguy chained to a desk, and he's
like, program new scenarios.
(01:46:51):
I don't want to mister Nick. He's like, I need to kill a man
today and you don't want it tobe you.
Matt (01:46:59):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:47:02):
That's in virtual season
4. Just kidding. So, anyway, we
finally got to and thoroughlyenjoyed our technology, a scary
19 nineties episode. I've beenwaiting to get to this with for
you for so long because I knowhow you feel about, like, hacked
together hacky episodes wherethey're like, I'm a computer
guy, and you can tell because Iuse the words, technology words,
(01:47:24):
like mainframe and digital and, debug and code. And, sometime
we'll have to do, hackers.
Maybe we'll do hackers as aPatreon only episode. Yeah. And
you can just rant for an hourand a half about when they go to
the pay phones and they connectthrough the pay phones, and
they're like, tap tap tap taptap. Like, they just bang on the
(01:47:46):
keyboards.
Reese (01:47:48):
Mhmm.
Tracy (01:47:50):
Matthew Lillard is in
that. And his keyboard is like
camouflage, and it has stickersover all the letters. Yep. Yeah.
So my niece okay.
My niece hunt and pecs. Shedoesn't I don't know.
Matt (01:48:03):
The Pecor types.
Tracy (01:48:04):
Pecor types.
Matt (01:48:04):
Just her.
Tracy (01:48:05):
Two fingers and a thumb.
Yeah. And her she was like, I'm
as fast as you are. Like, I'msorry, honey. No.
You're not. And she's like, Imean, how do you put your whole
hand on there then you can't seethe keyboard? Like, that was
like the game winner. If you putyour whole hand over it, you
can't see the keys. I was likeSlam dunk argument.
Mic drop. Beat that. I'm like, you should be able to type
(01:48:29):
without looking at the keys. Andshe was like, nobody does that.
Like, yeah.
It's okay. It's fine. It's fine.It's fine. It's fine.
This is why when we watch Duneand there's a Gen z person like
Timothy Chalamet in Dune, I'mlike, I have a hard time with
you because I have niece trauma.I'm just kidding. She's not
traumatizing. I love her todeath, but she's also just so
Gen z. It's like having a windowinto this alien world where they
(01:48:53):
are somehow completely consumedby technology and yet know
absolutely nothing about it.
Oh, yeah. Like, by her age, wewere building websites because
otherwise, what did you do onthe Internet? Nothing.
Matt (01:49:07):
Right.
Tracy (01:49:08):
Anyway.
Matt (01:49:09):
Yeah. I had a website, by
her age Yeah. It because it was
during high school.
Tracy (01:49:15):
Yeah. You had an Angel
Fire website.
Matt (01:49:16):
Yeah. For my the role
playing game club that I ran at
the high school.
Tracy (01:49:22):
Listen. When you're a
nerd, you commit for life. Okay?
This is a life sentence, and, Idon't care as long as there's
games to play. So what did youthink?
How did you feel about thetechnology is scary episode?
Matt (01:49:40):
This was good.
Tracy (01:49:41):
It was good.
Matt (01:49:42):
This was good. Yeah. Yeah.
This was one of the better
episodes, like, any TV show thatuses technology as a core part
of the plot.
Tracy (01:49:50):
Yeah. They did pretty
good. I felt like
Matt (01:49:52):
I I did have to work a
little bit to rationalize Yeah.
Like, the the feed the, like, sensation stuff, the haptic
feedback Yeah.
Tracy (01:50:00):
Part of it. Okay. Yeah.
Once you realize this is all
LaClaw, it's it's turtles allthe way down. If you go back far
enough, it's always LaClaw.
Matt (01:50:09):
Yeah.
Tracy (01:50:09):
So once you realize it's
Lacroix, it's fine. No. It's not
really Lacroix. Yes. That's fancanon.
Yes. I know. But isn't it betterif we think it's like when we
decided that Skanky knew. Isn'tit better if all of this is
actually Lacroix fucking withNick and ever so slowly pushing
him back towards being avampire?
Matt (01:50:27):
Right. He's he's switched
to playing the long game
Nick (01:50:31):
Yeah.
Matt (01:50:31):
Of indirect manipulation.
Correct.
Tracy (01:50:34):
And he's doing a great
job. Yeah. Yeah. So I guess
we'll just leave it there, unless you have something else
you want to say about it. Wedon't hate season 3.
I don't. Remember at thebeginning of this, I said, I'm
gonna help you to understandthat season 3 is really good.
And, actually, some of myfavorite episodes are coming up.
Like, some of my favoriteepisodes in the whole series are
coming up. Is games vampiresplay?
(01:50:58):
No. It's not. But only becauseof a the heavy breathing. Like,
just the heavy breathing isreally awkward, and I don't
know. It just feels I I don'tknow.
It's just not my favorite. It'sfine. It's good. It's a good
it's a good episode. It's good.
I like fever a lot better. Feveris probably top 10 episodes for
me. Yeah. I'm really excited. We're getting down to the, like,
(01:51:22):
pedal to the floor.
We just got canceled. Let's dosome real crazy shit.
Reese (01:51:27):
Mhmm.
Tracy (01:51:28):
So I'm really excited.
And I guess until next time,
friends. Bye.
